Rock the boat AN unmanned yacht ran aground in the El Toro neighbourhood of Calvia on Wednesday, September 14.

Strong waves whipped up in the early afternoon preceded

the incident, loosening the anchored vessel and sending it towards the rocky shore. Local Police and Calvia Civil Protection attempted to prevent the crash but were unable to do so.

Tragic death on the beach A STILL unidentified 72-year-old bather died on Can Pastilla beach near Palma on Tuesday September 13.

His lifeless body was discovered floating in the water around 5pm, and emergency services were alerted immediately, but neither they nor a lifeguard who was attending the situation as they arrived were able to resuscitate him.

Scant sanctions THE Territorial Coastal Unit of Manacor ’s Local Police force is under fire after issuing a paltry 82 fines over the summer for illegal parking at the en-

trance to the beautiful cove of Cala Varques.

Parking is not allowed on the main road leading to the popular beach, but that does not deter countless locals.

‘Towel protest’ over filming crew

By Matthew Elliott ENGLISH actress Michelle Keegan caused a stir when her film crew entourage took over too much space at a Mallorca hotel for the liking of angry tourists, who promptly staged a poolside towel protest.

The former Coronation Street star is filming the ITV drama Tiny & Bobby on the island and the crew had reportedly cordoned off the large pool and sunbeds, upsetting a group of German guests, who held up their towels and protested at the reception.

K e e ga n a nd c ompa ny w e re quic kly forced to move to the nearby children’s pool to film the scenes.

It is unclear whether the anger went slightly deeper than the restricted poolside access. The upcoming drama is based on a biopic of Bobby Moore, captain of the England team that narrowly defeated West Germany to win the 1966 World Cup - a result that still courts controversy among German fans 50 years on.

If this had happened when I was in a coma I’d have been dead before my parents got here. Families will miss their expat relatives’ funerals because they can’t be held up three days. By John Smith THERE can be little doubt that the major factor which led Britain to vote to leave the European Union was the widespread fear of uncontrolled immigration, tinged with a little xenophobia with regards to external control by ‘Johnny foreigner.’

What should have been a friendly and cooperative community of likeminded Europeans who had survived two world wars has turned into a monster. Some still believe in pure federalism while others are pushing the concept of a federal army rather than looking to support NATO. Eastern European countries fluttered li k e m o t h s a r o u n d th e E U flame. Together with Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain, they were desperate to grab as much money in the way of hand-outs as they could from those economies which were better off.

Germany effectively opened the floodgates by inviting refugees and migrants to make their way into Europe and this has led even die-hard supporters of the community, such as France, considering whether they should follow Britain’s lead.

The concept of Schengen (control-free borders), which Britain never joined, has flown out of the window as more and more of the

new members simply close themselves off to refugees whilst Italy and Greece have borne the brunt of new arrivals.

The re a re a lot of s ound bite s coming from the British government but little concrete information. The prime minis te r s a ys “Brexit is Brexit” and we won’t move too quickly whilst the minister in charge of the Brexit negotiations told parliament that the vote showed that the British wanted to control their own destiny, which was something of a given!

At least Liam Fox, the Minister in charge of ‘Making Britain Great Again,’ has made it clear there is no hope as he says industry has fallen to pieces and has grown ‘fat and lazy,’ making the nation incapable of securing lucrative post-Brexit trade deals.

to the continent when the country leaves the EU. Whether Britain will be forced to comply with the proposed regime hinges on how the Brexit negotiations pan out, whenever they finally take place.

Maybe, we need to ask the Swiss for advice as they have a fairly good economy with 130 separate trade agreements with the EU and they have recently voted to make it more difficult for EU passport holders to work in that country. They decided not to join the EU generations ago and didn’t have to finalise everything within two years.

All in all, it’s a bit of mess and it doe sn’t r eal l y l ook as i f anyone knows what to do. As one wag put it, “Only Britain could colonise half of the world and then leave the EU be c ause i t doesn’t l i ke i m m i grants!”

Or perhaps in the words of the writers of Dad’s Army it’s either ‘Don’t panic Mr Mainwaring’ or ‘We’re all doomed!’

General election WHEN it finally comes down to invoking the UK’s departure and the subsequent stream of negative implications during negotiations I believe the City of London’s views will prevail and there will be no Brexit and possibly a general election in the next six months.

By Matthew Elliott STORIES of young Brits sustaining horrific injuries whilst enjoying themselves in Mallorca are an unfortunate mainstay of today’s news.

But one young man from Northern Ireland, who was told he would never walk again after badly injuring his spine while skinny dipping on a trip to Mallorca, has

miraculously turned his life around and is now happily married and plays wheelchair rugby for the Irish national team in Dublin.

Bangor native William Doggart was just 18 when he went on holiday in 2009 to celebrate finishing his A-levels. One evening on the beach he struck his head on the sandbank after diving in, breaking three vertebrae and needing an emergency operation on his neck. Ironically he was told, had he

been drunk his body may have been more relaxed and avoided such a severe injury.

He spent three weeks in hospital before being moved to a spinal unit in Belfast where he competed with fellow patients in recovery, a period which inspired his later foray into the sporting world.

It’s a fantastic turnout around from a man who now helps others in similar situations and has now seen much of the world.

The Balearic government has been investigating a number of golf clubs in recent months.

Its experts removed more than 150m of pipe, an extraction pump and then disabled an electrical panel. Equip-

ment, it said, had been specifically designed to irrigate the course.

The amount being taken was up to 720 cubic metres of water a day for use on the greens, according to investigators.

This is said to be sufficient to keep 5,000 inhabitants of villages in the area

supplied with water.

Golf courses across the island are permitted to use only treated water to keep their greens and plants in top condition.

Environmental agencies have denounced those who try to circumvent the law accusing them of threatening the ecological balance

of the island.

It is understood the course, if convicted, could face a fine of between €10,000 and €1 million.

The situation will be regarded as alarming by those concerned that this may not be an isolated affair but rather a pattern of abuse that threatens Mallorca’s sustainability.

By Matt Ford ANDRATX Town Council has taken a leap into the future by employing drones to help study the water currents around Sant Elm. The aim is to create a heat map of temperatures in the crystal clear waters off the laid back resort, in order to try and avoid proliferations of unsightly green algae that sometimes bloom in the area.

A four-day analysis has been conducted, with the flying robots employed during the hottest hours of the day, since these coincide with the greatest densities of phyto-

plankton.

The data was then used to create a statistical photometry and time series of the fluctuating water temperature.

These will be used to determine the optimal placement of mechanical pumps which the council hope can be used to push the algal blooms away from the beauty spot.

The council has already determined that the green colour does not signify a drop in water quality or increase in organic matter following a recent chemical study, after concerns were raised that the municipality may lose its cherished blue flag status.

RCP spokesman, Albert Gonzalez, explained that th e d e v ice p ro v id es a “ s ta n d a rd is ed ” fo rm of CPR with minimal interruptions, thus “increasing the chances of patient survival.”

The medic also stressed that lifeguards will have their hands free while the

machine is operational, allow ing the m to provide further aid.

Beach security coordinator, Toni Carrio, welcomed the innovation, as he said: “We welcome any form of progre s s tha t inc re a s e s safety and welfare for our residents and visitors, and especially the public rescue service.”

Paradise strangled A PORTUGUESE artist launched a oneman and 15-towel protest against mass tourism on Mallorca by occupying Palma’s Molinar beach with a giant repertoire of beach paraphernalia.

Hugo Israel, who dubbed his sand protest ‘Balearics: Paradise Asphyxiated,’ brought 15 towels, an umbrella, a folding chair, a cooler and an inflatable crocodile to the beach and promptly took over a huge section of it, much to the consternation of passers-by.

A minor protest then targeted the artist’s own stunt before he explained to the furious crowd that he was in fact on their side and making a dramatised stand against the suffocated impact of mass tourism

Israel has demanded that upper limits be placed on tourist numbers to protect natural resources and decried the rampant building of hotels without any prior discussion with local communities, as well as the decadent decline of the beach area into a haven for binge drinking and prostitution.

Top timing ALMOST a third of all flights arriving in or departing from Palma this summer stuck to their schedule. Around a fifth were just 15 minutes or so late, while roughly 10 per cent saw delays exceeding an hour.

ROWDY BEHAVIOUR: There will be strict zero tolerance.

By Matthew Elliott RAMPANT misbehaviour, violent incidences and hospital trips have led to a 50 per cent increase in the number of guests ejected from Magaluf hotels.

President of the PalmanovaMagaluf hoteliers association, Sebastian Darder, has championed a strict zero tolerance approach to anti-social behaviour that runs hand in glove with a Guardia Civil crackdown to help establish a ‘new Magaluf.’

Darder claims that despite the column inches devoted to covering the ‘balconing’ craze, which sees drunken fools launch themselves off hotel or apartments balconies, there hasn’t actually been more trouble this year. Rather the arrests and evictions are down to a tougher and more synchronised approach to tackling such behaviour by the police and hotels.

He argues that greater confidence in Magaluf is represented by higher occupancy rates and it is well on its way to shedding its shady reputation and becoming more family friendly.

Alleged murderer of Gary Hutch arrested in Marbella

By John Smith AFTER almost a year of investigation, the Guardia Civil announced on September 14 that officers had arrested the person who they believe was responsible for the murder of 30-year-old Irishman Gary Hutch in Mijas on September 24, 2015.

R e porte dly, the s hooting of M r Hutch started a major feud between two Irish criminal organisations which were allegedly involved in drugs and arms trafficking as well as money laundering.

According to the Guardia Civil press release, this murde r trigge re d the viole nt death of another seven people in Ireland and most recently Calvia in Mallorca.

Garda (with both organisations sending officers to the other’s country) and Europol and they are confident that this arrest now solves this, the third and last violent murder, that occurred in Mijas during the summer of 2015.

Airport crash A BUS carrying disabled passengers collided with a passenger walkway at Palma airport on September 11, leaving several travellers in need of medical treatment.

The converted van which transports those with reduced mobility around the airport’s grounds reportedly did not meet stringent safety standards and the baffling collision is the second incident of its kind in recent weeks.

The airport workers union has previously denounced a lack of security and maintenance problems affecting employees’ ability to do their job properly but the facility’s management, run by Aena, has refused to comment on the allegations.

SES VOLTES: A small museum could be built in the area.

by Matthew Elliott OFTEN discussed, heartily planned, but never materialised, the saga of Mallorca’s fictional maritime museum has become something of a running joke in recent years, but that may be about to change as authorities look for a fitting way to celebrate the island’s naval heritage.

Tentative discussions between the Mallorcan Council and Palma Town Hall have seen the capital city’s cultural space in Ses Voltes suggested as a possible location for the nascent maritime museum.

Council president Miquel Ensenyat has made the creation of a proper maritime museum one of the key aims of his administration as he

plots to leave a legacy that has eluded his predecessors.

He has floated the possibility of building a small museum that could later be expanded in Ses Voltes and surrounding the area with six historic boats currently a nc hore d in the c a ve s a t Bellver Castle to create a celebratory nautical expanse in the city.

A FEW EMPTY CHAIRS: But strong growth still expected.

By Matthew Elliott AFTERSHOCKS from the Brexit vote may negatively impact the Balearic economy, according to revised growth forecasts from BBVA, one of Spain’s largest banks.

By hitting the pockets of British residents and tourists through heightened uncertainty, volatile exchange rates and potential economic decline across Europe, the Brexit vote has seen the bank’s forecast for growth

in Mallorca and its neighbours reduced by 0.4 per cent from the anticipated 3.2 per cent by the end of 2016.

Identifying the varying consequences the UK vote to leave the EU will have on different Spanish regions, the report suggests that areas with a strong British contingent will suffer slightly as those residents tighten their belts in anticipation of a precarious few years ahead.

Murcia and Valencia will be hit hardest by the Brexit aftermath, but the Balearic growth reduction is relatively minor as the islands are backed up by an incredibly strong tourist industry and property sector, neither of which rely on British money to anywhere near the same degree as mainland coastal hotspots.

Baby rescued from death HEROIC paramedics managed to resuscitate a baby who almost drowned after falling into a private pool at a Palma home, but the infant re m a i n s i n a c r i t ic a l condition in the intensive care unit of Espases pediatric ward.

The adventurous 15month-old boy has managed to escape a 40cm tall enclosure during a family meal and stumbled towards the pool and fell in, sinking towards the very bottom. Fortunately

his eagle-eyed 14-year-old brother spotted the boy and dived into rescue him.

The adults tried desperately to revive the unconscious child but were forced to call paramedics as there was no sign of life.

Palma police used a special red code system to enable ambulances to reach the area quickly and doctors were able to revive the boy, although his pulse remained weak and he required urgent treatment at the hospital.

SON BANYA: A demolition date has finally been set for early 2017.

Shantytown protestors

By Matthew Elliott PROTESTS have taken place against the planned demolition of the Son Banya shantytown near Palma airport.

Hundreds of local residents gathered to oppose the execution of an order given in 2012 but which has endured opposition in the courts for years.

Upon hearing that the demoli-

tion date had finally been set for early 2017, residents, more than 400 of whom would be directly affected, came out in full force to make their feelings known.

The vast majority of current residents are gypsies, who wonder where exactly the government expects them to go, especially since they won’t readily be welcomed as

neighbours in any other Mallorcan community.

Furious at the decision, many are now threatening to take their protest to the town hall itself and the very doorstep of the mayor.

There is speculation that the site, which the authorities have long lambasted as a haven for drug dealers and criminal gangs, will be trans-

formed into a shopping centre, perhaps an extension of the nearby Fan Mallorca plaza.

Earlier this summer the Moreno clan, one of Mallorca’s main underworld gangs was dismantled after police raids in Son Banya, guided by helicopters and dogs, seized weapons, drugs, and wanted criminals in the notorious settlement.

EUR weekly currency update The three weakest currencies of the week were, in order, the US dollar, the British pound and the euro. At the back of the field the dollar was hampered by weaker-than-expected jobs numbers last Friday and by a particularly disappointing survey of the US services sector, which showed a surprising contraction of activity in August. Sterling, having benefited from unexpectedly good purchasing managers’ index readings, dropped the baton after the Bank of England governor told parliament’s Treasury Committee UK interest rates could go lower.

The euro received a late boost from the European Central Bank, which failed to announce fresh stimulus measures after Thursday’s Governing Council meeting. The ECB turned out to be less eager than investors had thought for rate cuts and asset purchases. Over the seven days the euro added three quarters of a US cent and strengthened by half a cent against sterling.

USD weekly currency update It was not the best ever seven days for the dol-

lar, which brought up the rear among the major currencies, losing half a cent to the pound and three quarters of a cent to the euro. The dollar got off to a bad start last Friday when the US employment report showed fewer than expected new jobs were created in August. It was also hampered by disappointing purchasing managers’ index readings, particularly the one on Tuesday that showed slowing activity in the services sector. Together the numbers made the Federal Reserve appear less likely to raise interest rates this year.

Sterling enjoyed an initial boost from some surprisingly good British PMIs but suffered a setback when the Bank of England governor told parliament’s Treasury Committee that a further rate cut is possible this year. The euro received some late help on Thursday when the European Central Bank failed to deliver the additional stimulus that many had expected.

Eight days of gains for the Aussie came to a messy end on Friday, apparently as a result of an interview that Glenn Stevens, the outgoing Reserve Bank of Australia governor, gave to the Australian Financial Review.

His comment that the Australian dollar “could give us trouble” was interpreted as a hint that it was too strong.

By Matthew Elliott AFTER a hectic record-breaking summer, the Balearic government has put pen to paper on a new strategy aimed at promoting cultural tourism to the islands. The culture department believes that while Mallorca

and its neighbouring islands clearly occupy a premier position on the typical tourist bucket list of sun, sea and sand, the Balearic’s historical and artistic appeal could do with a boost.

injection of roughly half a million euros to ‘internationalise the island’s culture’ to an unprecedented degree.

The Balearic film commission has been roped into the new strategy and will help promote the region by filming at key cultural spots across the islands and producing a comprehensive advertising strategy that will hit the global market in time for 2017.

Central to the strategy is the need to broaden and diversify the Balearic’s tourist appeal, which presently relies far too much on an excessive summer season unbalanced by off-season visits.

By publicising the islands’ cultural attraction the government hopes to attract more guests during winter and reduce the burden placed on summer businesses to cultivate the local economy.

Emergency aid for school-starters rises WITH one of the busiest school years in Mallorcan history now underway, local charities have warned that

there is a growing number of families who are unable to afford even basic school supplies.

Both the Red Cross and Caritas claim that September has already seen a sharp rise in requests for emergency aid for textbooks and other needs as the Parents Federation estimated that it c os ts be tw e e n 450 e uros and 900 euros per child to meet all the costs of a new s c hool ye a r, a month’s salary in many cases.

Spartan showers FOLLOWING the lead of the Playa de Palma, Calvia is set to turn off beach showers in a desperate bid to save water on the drought-stricken island.

One of 27 municipalities across Mallorca which have announced a state of emergency due to the climatic conditions, Calvia will put up signposts notifying residents and holidaymakers of the Spartan new regime.

Other proposals from Calvia Council to combat the water shortage include using native plants and natural greenery instead of water devouring turf.

An information campaign has been launched to raise awareness of the situation and the council is also open to new ideas, suggestions and proposals from residents.

FOLLOWING his resignation over allegations of involvement in a sex scandal, the former Bishop of Mallorca, Javier Salinas, has written a personal message to his former flock in which he claims to have made his decision ‘freely, having prayed before the Lord’.

Salinas expresses his gratitude to Pope Francis for entrusting him with his new role of auxiliary Bishop of Valencia, and apologises to diocesans for any ‘offence’ he may have given in the letter which was made public last week.

Sister saviour A BRITISH nurse has been applauded for her professionalism and heroism after she saved a young boy’s life while holidaying in Mallorca.

Sister Wendy Hadfield, who works at Tameside Hospital, managed to resuscitate a five-year-old English boy who had no pulse after being spotted lying at the bottom of the hotel pool.

She gave the boy mouth-to-mouth and CPR, as his horrified family looked on, telling the Press afterwards how nervewracking it was to have to operate on a child independently, without her hospital back- up team.

The boy made a quick recovery after paramedics arrived on the scene, and was reportedly splashing around in the pool again after just a few days, while Sister Hadfield has returned home to commendations from her colleagues.

Fidgeting with public finances

By Matthew Elliott A FORMER political leader in Mallorca has been fined for buying more than a thousand copies of a book written by two local journalists with public funds in exchange for their praising him in the press.

Miquel Nadal, a one-time tourism councillor who led the Mallorcan Union (UM) party before its dissolution, bought 1,800 copies of the unheralded treatise ‘Caribbean Visionaries: 25 years of Spanish hotel chains’ international experience.’

Although priced at a hefty €20 per copy, Nadal raided the public coffers and forked out double that price for each of the 1,800 books, which ended up languishing in a garage, of absolutely no benefit to council activities.

Nadal and two accomplices, and the two journalists, were fined €1,800 a piece and sentenced to three months in prison for

corruption and fraud, having already paid back the damage to public finances, estimated at €40,000.

Nadal will likely adapt well to his prison sentence as he is already serving time at His Majesty’s pleasure in Palma prison over an unrelated corruption conviction.

Bad trip AN unnamed Briton threw himself from the Valencia-Palma de Mallorca ferry while the ship was still in port.

The Juan J Sister was docked at the Poniente pier, but as the man was brought ashore he reacted very aggressively and turned on the Port police who had come to his rescue with a lifebelt.

They had to subdue and then handcuff him in order to control the situation, as the man was clearly under the influence of drugs, the officers explained afterwards.

The Briton was a tourist, sources said, and had to be calmed down with a sedative.

India tie for Nadal MALLORCAN-BORN tennis star and current world number five, Rafael Nadal, is heading his country’s challenge to return to the big time in the world game with a Davis Cup play-off fixture against India in Delhi.

The tie, to be played on September 16-18, will be free to spectators to encourage younger players to come and watch.

Hells Angel flying home THREE years after his spectacular arrest in Mallorca, the leader of the ‘Hell Angels in Spain’ left the island for the first time, travelling home to Hanover where he was greeted like a king.

Frank Hanebuth has spent more than two years in pre-trial detention, occupying several of Spain’s maximum security prisons, with prosecutors accusing him of masterminding a pernicious criminal syndicate that was involved in human and narcotics trafficking, extortion, pimping and money laundering.

The 52-year-old German and former professional boxer has spent the best part of 2016 on remand in Mallorca, reporting to the authorities once a week, while the prosecution attempts to string together a case against the burly career criminal that will stick.

On Sunday September 11 he returned to Ger m any havi ng been gr ant ed a week’s respite from his effective home arrest, with the court order mandating that he return to Mallorca next week to face justice if and when it ever comes.

The prosecution have had difficulty composing a case despite their suspicions but Hanebuth, who naturally owns a security com pany, i s l i kel y t o m ake good on hi s promise to return as he plans to open a boxing gym on the island in October.

Student avalanche descends on Balearics EDUCATION experts are demanding extra funding for the overcooked Balearic school system which is at breaking point due to a huge influx of new students from families migrating to the Islands.

Ministers estimate that an average

of 20 new students are arriving each day ahead of the new school term as more and more people move to the Balearics now that the worst of the financial crisis appears to have abated.

The school-age population had

stabilised during the recession years but now education minister Marti March has spoken of an ‘avalanche of school immigration’ which is believed to be unique to the Balearics.

March argues that extra government financing is needed to help in-

corporate and properly educate the roughly 165,000 students taking to the archipelago’s classrooms this week, although roughly a third will attend private schools.

The 2016/17 school year will be manned by some 15,000 teachers, a

substantial increase on recent years and sufficient to reduce many class sizes to less than 20 students, but without adequate technology and funding the school system will be seriously strained by the new arrivals.

By Matthew Elliott DROUGHT continues to afflict Mallorca and indeed most of the Balearic Islands as the regional government tallies the cost of imported desalinated water and climatologists predict that the winter will bring only sparse rainfall.

There is an emergency alert in 27 municipalities and water reserves are at just 41 per cent, the lowest level in more than a decade. The government has argued that increased efficiency has meant reserves have dropped at a lower rate than previous summers but rainfall is almost a third less than it was 10 years ago, making such boasts largely inconsequential.

Females are to be recognised MANACOR will soon try to inject a dose of gender equality in its street planning, and psychogeography, by naming more local landmarks and monuments after famous or influential local women.

The decision came after it was noted that across the entire Mallorcan town there is only one street named after a woman, a patriarchal status-quo that reformers are eager to change.

While there will be no direct changes to street names, local planners are aiming to christen various landmarks and facilities with female names to even up the score.

The town hall will also hold various gender equality workshops, and has pledged to make the process entirely transparent to residents.

Cruelty case collapses ANIMAL rights activists are infuriated by the repeal of a sentence handed down on a Costitx farmer who was given a six month prison term for severely mistreating a donkey.

The man was found

guilty of animal cruelty two years ago after the Guardia Civil found a badly abused donkey on his property.

The guilty verdict was lauded as a huge success by local activists, but the farmer lodged an appeal

and the district court has now found that, ‘the treatment did not constitute cruelty.’

Despite testimony from two vets, the court argued that the donkey was not malnourished, and the farmer is free.

and with Mayor Jose Hila set to attend, the celebration will be especially poignant given the iconic sports centre’s near destruction in 2007 when a tornado swept through the city.

An enormous restoration project took almost seven years and cost more than 11 million euros, before the new look centre was unveiled in 2014. Today Son Moix is home to more than 3,000 trainees, in 26 different disciplines, both adults and children.

The centre also plays a huge role in providing sporting opportunities to Palma residents who aren’t members, but frequently attend to play sports with friends and family. More than 400,000 people have passed through its doors so far this year and Son Moix, officially inaugurated on September 17, 1976, is now one of Spain’s premier sporting institutions.

By Eleanor Hawkins AS promised, the provincial council managed to get roadworks on the AL-7100 from Albox to Chirivel via El Saliente finished in time for celebrations of the 300th anniversary of the shrine.

Public Works and Development Delegate Oscar Liria reported that the work, which saw a 6.5 kilometre stretch of the road widened and resurfaced in preparation for the crowds of pilgrims expected to visit on this jubilee year, was completed on Friday, September 2, ahead of the traditional Romeria (pilgrimage).

Following on from work done last year at the entrance to El Saliente, the job completed a task aimed to improve safety and comfort on the busy road.

Fake euros HUGE numbers of counterfeit euros, dollars and pesos have been seized in Columbia in an operation between the Spanish National Police, US Secret Service and Columbian Police which has resulted in the arrest of seven men and the closure of a sophisticated printing operation in Bogota.

Following various meetings between the National Police of Columbia and Spain it became apparent that a clandestine organisation was producing high quality fake currency and a great deal of it was being flown to Spain in the baggage of supposed holidaymakers.

associated with the Criminal Investigation Branch of the Bank of Spain was sent by the National Police to Bogota in July of this year to join a 50man task force which included agents assigned by the US Secret Service.

Having identified potential addresses for the production of the high value fake bank notes (mostly €100 and $100), the task force arrested seven people, found two printing presses, hologram affixing machinery, computers containing designs for euros and dollars and a total of €1 million in €50, €100 and €500 notes and $1.2 million in $100 bills.

FOLLOWING the ‘roasting’ that Sports Direct’s owner Mike Ashley received in parliament with regards to the way in which staff were treated and paid, he has been on something of a charm offensive in the run up to the AGM. Parcel collection IN an interesting team up between the Spanish post office (Correos), perhaps not best known for its speed of delivery and national petrol giant Repsol, they have announced that by the end of this year, purchasers from certain internet companies will be able to visit one of some 500 nominated petrol stations to pick up their purchases.

This reflects a number of similar agreements made with local grocery stores in the UK and will no doubt assist the post office to retain some of its parcel delivery business.

By John Smith IN what is a significant reversal following the fall in value of sterling, a British company, Micro Focus, which has just made its debut in the FTSE 100, has made a huge investment in merging with the software division of Silicon Valley giant Hewlett-Packard.

The executive chairman of Micro Focus Kevin Loosemore was aware that HP was looking to continue to rationalise its business and approached the American company in February this year to discuss a way in which it could take over the running of that division.

Even with the apparent ‘panic’ following the Brexit vote did not divert him from his plan and it has just been announced that the two groups will merge to form an $8.8 billion (€7.8 billion) company which will trade under the Micro Focus name out of the UK although HP will own 50.1 per cent of the company and will receive a total of $2.5 billion (€2.2 billion) in cash from the British firm.

This is a major step for the company which employs 4,500 people and has 20,000 customers worldwide as it brings in a further 50,000 customers from HP as well as the business of former UK software company Autonomy which was sold to HP in a disastrous deal which saw three quarters of the companies value written down following the acquisition.

HEAD OFFICE: For Hewlett-Packard in Palo Alto, California. going strategy of purchasing good quality competitors and companies in similar areas which can be managed well in order to increase profits, a major part of the business is to persuade large companies to pay Micro Focus to extend the life of the computers they use to run their businesses, thus allowing them to avoid spending on newer computer systems until absolutely necessary.

This latest arrangement is attractive to HP as it has been active in trying to concentrate on what it considers to be its core business which is the production of computers and printers, so this deal will hopefully ensure that it sees decent profits without having to worry about managing the business and immediately after the deal was announced, shares in Micro Focus shot up by more than 20 per cent,

valuing the company at over £5 billion (€6 billion).

The merged company is now a major player in the software world and whilst it is unlikely to challenge Microsoft which is really aiming at a different market, it does mean that the UK can boast that it has one of the biggest software groups in the world.

Marbella new holiday destination for Chinese

By John Smith IN the same way that French company Club Med promoted all inclusive holidays in specially constructed ‘villages’ in exotic parts of the world, so the Chinese, recognising that their new middle class are desperate to travel to Europe but worried about the language and the way of life, are reversing the process and considering opening their own Chinese friendly hotels.

Giant investment firm Dalian Wanda owned by Wang Jianlin who has taken a particular interest in commercial property in Europe in general and in particular Spain where he purchased amongst other investments, the Edificio España in Madrid from Santander for an estimated €265 million. Although having discovered that he could not renovate it and turn it into a luxury hotel he is now in the process of disposing of it.

Not discouraged with this problem, he now has his eye in the Costa del Sol and representatives were sent earlier this year to Benahavis to discuss investment opportunities

WANG JIANLIN: Owner of giant investment firm Dalian Wanda. and he has now sent the general director of his hotel and resorts division to Marbella to discuss the opportunities that might exist.

The general area offers a good range of high quality hotels as well as still having land available for development which in turn would

boost local employment.

Such a visit has been warmly welcomed as in 2015 the conglomerate handled the travel and hotel

arrangements for 40 million Chinese tourists and travellers so even a small percentage of that business would give a boost to the local economy.

What appeals to the newly affluent Chinese traveller is the coast with its sun, sea and sailing plus the number of golf courses as well as some very impressive and upmarket shopping centres and eateries.

Initial discussions have centred on the availability of existing properties but all parties must have an eye on the establishment of specific Chinese friendly enclaves and the creation of a new holiday destination for the group which continues to expand its operation throughout the world by the acquisition and construction of luxury hotels.

Should this possibility become reality, then there will be an additional fillip for Malaga airport as new and additional flights to and from China would have to be introduced whilst other towns within the province would be encouraged to negotiate with the group in order to attract their business.

Scotland facing a significant balance of payments crisis

By John Smith SOON after the result of the Brexit referendum, Nicola Sturgeon made it very clear that Scotland had voted to stay in the European Union and that unless Britain ensured it’s retention of that position, she would personally recommend that there be a second independence referendum and an eventual application by Scotland to join the EU in its own right.

Much had been made of an independent Scotland becoming a member of the Union prior to the first referendum, but the overall response from Brussels was pretty lukewarm, with no promises of special treatment for Scotland because she had been a member through the United Kingdom.

Towards the end of August, the First Minister still appeared ready to push forward for a second referendum and announced that she had instructed staff and SNP parliamentary and council members to go on the offensive to promote the concept of the second referendum with local meetings and a questionnaire

Now with the release of the latest figures showing that in the year 2015 – 2016, there was an overall deficit of just under £15 billion (€17.7 billion) in the Scottish economy she has had to back pedal somewhat.

Whilst the SNP remains optimistic about the future and the fact that it could grow the economy especially if the oil price increases, analysts suggest that even if independent, Scotland would only be accepted by the European Union if it drastically reduces expenditure and even Ms Sturgeon accepts that the drop in oil prices means Scotland has “suffered an economic shock, which has impacted on our fiscal position.”

As time passes, it appears that the Scottish people could become less interested in independence and more interested in a future within a United Kingdom which has left the European Union, so despite the dominance of the SNP generally, they will have to steer a very difficult course before independence or membership of the Union is likely.

‘No go’ areas really exist LEAPY LEE SAYS IT

OTHERS THINK IT WE really do have to drag our heads out of the sand and begin to admit some of the realities of life. Living in denial is utterly counterproductive.

The recent ‘advice’ given to the Chinese tourist by their airline company is a case in point. To my mind their recommendation for their passengers to avoid certain areas, particularly after dark, was a completely responsible act by an organisation that obviously had their customers’ best interests at heart.

Let’s be quite clear about this. Despite what the PC brigade would have us believe, ‘no go’ areas do exist in UK towns and cities. The majority of these areas, where taxis refuse to visit and even the police tend to avoid, are mainly inhabited by ethnic minorities and littered with illegal aliens, drugs and dangerous criminals. Heaven help anyone who dares to admit it however. I’ve no

Besides, school uniforms are a wonderfull leveller and allow the pupils to concentrate on what’s in the memory bank, not the banks of the wealthy parents that allow their offspring to Lord it over those pupils less fortunate. Good luck to him.

Good luck also to Theresa May and her Grammar schools. To my mind the system I grew up in should never have been changed. It gave everyone an opportunity to better themselves. If you passed the 11plus you went on to Grammar school and later a chance of University. If you failed, you had the opportunity to stay on in your existing school or, if you so desired go on to Technical College to learn a trade and subsequently enter into the tremendous cross section of apprenticeships offered up to those who qualified. Perfect.

THE 2016 Summer Paralympics are well and truly under way. In celebration we we take a look at the 10 most decorated Paralympians of all time.

1. Trischa Zorn. A female swimmer from the USA, this outstanding athlete amassed a medal haul of 55 during her career: 41 gold, nine silver and five bronze. Born blind she began swimming aged 10 and competed in the Arnhem 1980 Paralympics aged 16 winning seven gold medals and setting three gold records. At the London 2012 Olympic Games she was named the most successful Paralympian ever and inducted into the Visa Parlympic Hall of Fame.

2. Jonas Jacobsson. This Swedish sharpshooter was born paralysed from the waist down. He has achieved 17 gold, four silver and nine bronze medals, 27 in total throughout his career, making him the most successful male Paralympian. In 2008 he was awarded the highest annual sporting prize in Sweden, the Dagbladet Gold Medal.

3. Roberto Marson. An Italian multisport athlete he competed in three different sports: athletics, wheelchair fencing and swimming.

In total he won 26 medals: 16 gold, seven silver and three bronze. He lost the use of his legs in 1964 when a pine tree he was chopping down fell on his back. He died in 2011 and was inducted into the Visa Paralympic Hall of Fame in 2012.

4. Mike Kenny, MBE. Born in 1945 he is a retired British swimmer who won 16 gold and two silver medals making him the most successful British Paralympian. He began swimming as therapy in the Southport spinal unit hospital after he fell off a ladder at work. In 1989 he received an MBE at Bucking-

5. Beatrice Hess. A French swimmer she broke nine world records at the 2000 Paralympic games in Sydney, her penultimate games.

Her career spanned two decades and she achieved a total of 19 medals: 15 gold and four silver. She has cerebral palsy and was described by French newspaper L’Humanite as ‘one of the best swimmers in the world.’

6. Mayumi Narita. The Japanese swimmer has used a wheelchair since 1994 when at the age of 13 she was involved in a traffic accident which left her quadriplegic.

She has won 19 medals: 15 gold, two silver and two bronze and at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens was the Games’ most successful athlete. She is currently vice chair of the Tokyo 2016 Athletes Commission.

7. Heinz Frei. With a long racing career in wheelchair athletics this Swiss athlete has won the London Marathon wheelchair race three times and at the age of 45 earned five medals at the 2003 European games. He has a Paralymic medal haul of 26: 14 gold, six silver and six bronze. He has also participated in cycling, using a handcycle, cross-country sit-skiing and the biathlon.

8. Franz Nietlispach. Another Swiss wheelchair athlete he has achieved a total of 26 medals: 14 gold, six silver and six bronze, all for athletics with the exception of one bronze which he achieved in handcycling at the 2008 Beijing Games. Earlier in his career he also competed in table tennis. He has won the men’s wheelchair division

Family Matters THERE’S a lot of information out there about exercise and health. We know that physical activity is good for our minds. Being active promotes mental health and well-being. It improves self perception and self-esteem, mood and sleep quality, and it reduces stress, anxiety and fatigue.

Physically active people have up to a 30 per cent reduced risk of becoming depressed, and staying active helps those who are depressed recover. In older people, staying active can improve cognitive function, memory, attention and processing speed, and reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

There’s so many trends and hot new ideas about how to exercise, when to exercise and what to be doing that sometimes we ignore the simplest option: walking. Walking is the simple answer to

KEEP ACTIVE: Walking is good for your health. getting people more active. It is the most accessible physical activity, and already the most popular. It has the greatest potential to grow, particularly among people disproportionately affected by low physical activity levels and poor health.

Walking is a free, gentle, low-impact activity that requires no special training or equipment. Almost everyone can do it, anywhere and at any time. It is easy to start slowly and build up gradually, as well as being the ideal exercise to fit around everyday life.

It therefore addresses many of the reported barriers to being more active, such as lack of time, money, poor health and physical limitations. It is also accessible to people from groups who could most benefit from being more active — such as older people or those on low incomes. Walking is

an effective form of exercise. as a form of moderate physical activity that contributes towards achieving the guidelines set by the UK’s Chief Medical Officers, walking offers all the benefits of physical activity to health and wellbeing, while remaining accessible to the majority of the population. In addition walking can simultaneously help in achieving many other worthwhile objectives besides health.

As a form of active travel, it is the most sustainable form of transport and has a key role to play in reducing congestion, pollution and climate change. More people walking would bring economic benefits to both urban and rural areas, can help increase social interaction, and reduce crime and fear of crime. And of course it’s a great way to fundraise for charity.

The Rotary Club of Calvia International are busy finalising their plans for the annual walk in aid of local charities - all focusing on young people on Saturday October 8. The 10km walk is from Katmandu in Magaluf to Mood Beach in Portals (and back!). A 2km will also take place.

Marshalled and supervised, the main participants will be youngsters from the International schools who will shortly be receiving the details and sponsorship forms for those taking part. So be prepared to be asked for sponsorship money.

Fire safety needs some thought FOR the three years that I’ve lived on the Costa Blanca I’ve been terrified to see burning in the open nearly every day (although it’s forbidden in the summer). It has hardly rained in these three years and when I phone the police to tell them that someone is burning, without a ‘quemador’ (those kinds of grey bricks areas in which they usually burn), during summer months and even during the not allowed hours, they just ignore my call!

Last year on August 18 a neighbour started a fire that went into his other neighbour’s garden! Luckily this other neighbour was at home and both of them managed to stop the fire! The police again didn’t register it probably to save ‘their friends’ from paying fines!

If anyone out there has been experiencing some similar cases please let’s report it all together to Seprona to put more pressure and stop this nonsense which puts at risks, lives, houses, and nature!

Some of their exploits are worthy of a satire, but it makes me wish our British overlords were more like the Spanish.

At least here the corruption is in your face and, as long as it doesn’t fleece your bank account, always worth a good chuckle. In the UK they’ve managed to perfect it behind the scenes, it’s still there but done professionally is a little harder to uncover, and not quite as funny when you do...

Car hire ordeal

An urban nightmare I WAS incredibly alarmed to read a recent EWN article about urbanisation along the Spanish coast meaning that most of the coastline of Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol is now comprised of apartment complexes and the like. Going back just 40 years the Spanish coast was raw, wild, pristine and glorious, but today is mostly private except for some packed beaches chock full of bars and garbage.

Of course it’s the same story just about everywhere

And don’t get me started about plastic in the oceans... dogs and animals in general are not the threat to any environment unless they’ve been hormoned to death which ends up in our supermarkets... I believe that’s by far more of a threat to humane hygiene…

I feel it is only right to point out that under the same circumstance as her, when my husband recently passed away, our bank (Unicaja, Colmenar) could not have been more helpful.

The joint account was not frozen, in fact within two days it had been changed to my name as sole account holder.

Also the forms required by law to prove the balance at the date of death had been given to me for the nominal sum of €8.

When I asked if I could use the total balance my manager was completely astounded, ‘why of course, it is your money,’ they said.

Perhaps Margaret needs to rethink her banking arrangements.

The agent tried to make me sign their damage receipt which I point blank refused, only to discover later upon reading it that he had body swerved the original accusation of where the damage was and changed it to back bumper - exactly where the scratches pre-existed upon collection (photos taken).

I am totally disgusted by the way we were treated and how blatantly obvious their tactics are. I have informed my credit card company as well as local press and EWN to take this into account since it is the likes of insurance companies that are also being duped into these fraudulent activities.

Doubling the survival rates CHEMOTHERAPY and drugs have helped to double survival rates in patients with multiple myeloma, according to the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Foundation.

Multiple myeloma is a cancer arising from plasma cells, a type of white blood cell which is made in the bone marrow. In myeloma, these plasma cells become abnormal, multiply uncontrollably and release only one type of antibody which has no useful function.

The treatment of multiple myeloma, “has revolutionised over the past 15 years,” said Albert Oriol,

haematologist and researcher from Barecelona’s Josep Carreras Leukaemia Foundation.

More than 2,000 people in Spain are diagnosed with the condition each year with the disease having a higher incidence in those aged over 65.

IS your child struggling with reading? Try adding more oily fish to their diets. A new study has revealed that children who eat oily fish may be better readers than their peers as young people’s reading ability improved with Omega 3 consumption, found in fish such as mackerel, salmon and tuna.

The British researchers followed youngsters who took an Omega 3 and Omega 6 supplement and found that after three months they showed a larger improvement in reading ability than those who were given a placebo supplement.

More research for Zika TH E Z i k a v i r u s h a s b e e n fo u n d in tears, scientists say, after it was detected in the tears of lab mice. It is a sign of another way the virus could infect humans.

They said it could linger in eyes for more than a week and explains why a number of Zika patients have developed an eye disease called uveitis, which leads to loss of vision.

Scientists at America’s Washington University St Louis, said it highlights how little is actually known about the virus and more investigations and research is being carried out.

Although principally spread by mosquitoes, Zika has been shown to persist in sites of the body where the immune system is less active, including semen, saliva and now, possibly, tears.

The news comes as the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendations are made t h a t c o u p l e s who have travelled to a country with a Zika outbreak should ab-

stain from sex for six months, whether they show symptoms or not.

The term sciatica describes a set of symptoms that are characterised by leg pain (and possibly tingling, numbness or weakness) starting at the bottom of the back and going through the buttocks and the greater sciatic nerve down the back of each leg. Sciatica is a symptom of another underlying health problem. It is not a disease in itself.

Hotel with a difference enjoy tea, cake and art

By John Smith THOSE with a taste for art will need to book into the five star Belmond La Residencia in Deia or visit its Café Miro where it is now exhibiting no less than 33 works by the famous Catalan artist Joan Miró.

Running through to 2017, all of this original artwork has been loaned to the hotel which considers itself a living art museum by the Miró estate and it is claimed that this is the largest collection of his work to hang in a hotel anywhere in the world.

I REMEMBER once having a discussion with the Methodist minister in the Suffolk village where we lived.

His answer to the charge that religion had been the justification for more wars than any other factor in human history, was it was man who precipitated wars, not their beliefs.

At the time I thought that was a reasonable supposition and made good sense. But I think differently now and I have come to the conclusion that religion is in fact a force that works against the best interests of the human race. My conclusion was based on some very deep thought on what religion really is and the nature of its origin.

THE TRUTH: No religion or individual has all of the answers. the world. The adherents of each believing that only they possess the true knowledge and therefore the answers to mans problems and ultimate salvation. But the truth is, no religion and no individual has all of the answers to the age old question: Why are we here?

One of our design faults is that we, as human beings, detest the fact that we do not have answers. All the ‘I’s’ need to be dotted and the ‘T’s’

crossed. I therefore believe religion can be defined as: An observation of phenomenon and events that we do not understand, explained by things we would like to believe, peppered with a good deal of wishful thinking.

It is only by this unsatisfactory means that we can slot in the missing parts and com-

plete the circle, giving us this inaccurate picture and in some cases, the right to impose the result on others. Some of these cobbled together circles promote universal love, whilst others foster conflict and domination. In simple terms: ‘Good’ and ‘evil.’

Ironically both sides of this coin can be present within the same be-

lief system, Christianity and Islam the prime examples.

This is why humanity stands poised on the brink today. The ‘good’ by definition tolerate the ‘bad’ whilst the ‘bad’ abuse the tolerance of the ‘good.’

With the escalation of atrocities perpetrated by religious fanatics that we are witnessing today, this contradictory equation can only end in disaster.

There has to be some urgent rethinking on dealing with the evil creeping ever closer.

THERE are lots of good things about living in southern Spain but one we don’t think of too often is that unlike many other countries around the world, we are less vulnerable to war than most.

North Korea has announced it’s tested its fifth and largest atom bomb and boasts it can produce large numbers of bombs small enough to fit onto intercontinental missiles, which could supposedly reach the USA, its main enemy alongside South Korea.

Even the Chinese, who supported the north during the Korean War, are critical of the latest actions from the unstable leader of the country who recently allegedly had a politician executed for not sitting properly in his presence.

Yemen has had its fair share of fighting, but nothing like the terrible attacks taking place at the moment and according to one reporter in the capital Sana’a, youth of the country are so convinced they will be totally eradicated that they are moving into Saudi Arabia not because they expect to win but purely to kill as many Saudis as possible before

EVEN though there were some financial and political problems surrounding the Paralympic games being held in Rio, the sheer number of participants, range of impairments and the unmistakable commitment to achieving their goals is remarkable. It leaves many unimpaired people stunned by all that is being achieved by disabled sports participants.

Not long ago, to admit to having a child with a disability was looked down on. Even those who weren’t consciously biased against the disabled, tended to talk down to them, almost in the belief that someone in a wheelchair for example was mentally impaired.

History shows us many examples of people overcoming disabilities, with Julius Caesar supposedly suffering from epilepsy, Helen Keller who was blind, Douglas Bader flew in the Second World War despite losing both legs, Franklin D Roosevelt became US President despite being crippled by polio and perhaps most famously, Stephen Hawking, who has defied all odds to live a long and successful life.

Disabled games used to be considered a distraction rather than an event, but the urge to succeed and conquer difficulty runs deep in so many ‘disabled’ people and the fact they are able to channel their determination into sports that now sees large numbers of recognised professionals is quite amazing in such a short time.

Although it clearly matters to the individual sportsmen and women who participate in the games to emerge with a medal, the fact is 4,500 determined people from 160 countries have simply shown they can overcome the worst and succeed.

Parties are just marking time Cassandra Nash A weekly look - and not entirely impartial reaction to the Spanish political scene

NO politico will utter anything other than hot air before the regional elections in Galicia and the Basque Region on September 25.

The Partido Popular, PSOE, Ciudadanos and Podemos are marking time, waiting to see how well they do. That’s when things on the national scene will get going, and not before.

Mixed messages RAJOY’S text message “Luis, stay strong,” to former PP treasurer Luis Barcenas after he was accused of enriching himself and the party with illegal funds will haunt him forever.

So will vowing undying love - “I love you Alfonso, coño I love you” - for Alfonso Rus, former commission-grabbing, contractpadding president of the PP in the Valencia region. The c-word, incidentally, is admissible in Spain and its use obligatory for politicians.

“Rita you’re the best,” Rajoy once told Va-

lencia’s ex-mayor Rita Barbera who, still a Senator, is under investigation for corruption, illegal party funding and money laundering.

Their alleged transgressions surprised him, Rajoy admitted, which doesn’t say much for presidential perception.

And if he suspected and said nothing, that says even less.

Love-in RAJOY, Sanchez, Rivera and Iglesias, all have first names, strings of academic letters after those names and private lives about which thankfully little is known.

Even if the country were condemned to a third election, the Spanish would fortunately not have to witness presidential candidates snogging their wives before, during or after party rallies to demonstrate how loving and lovable they are.

The fall guy

ACTING president Mariano Rajoy had no involvement with choosing Jose Manuel Soria as Spain’s representative to the World Bank. Blame Economy minister Luis de Guindos for keeping him in the dark and allowing him to say the appointment was entirely legal.

That’s the latest message from relieved Partido Popular after a rare occasion when internal strife produced visible fissures. The party is extraordinarily loyal to its leaders, especially Rajoy who is indulgently loyal to his supporters.

But this time Rajoy – sorry, De Guindos – went too far allowing someone to represent Spain who was linked to the Panama Papers. Even hardened PP grandees perceived this as a blind eye too many.

So Soria gave up his taxfree €226,000 a year at the World Bank and fell on his sword, presumably the one that stabbed De Guindos in the back.

EVER felt that September is the true start of the New Year and not January? The time when, after the long summer break, kids return to school and adults to work.

September always felt to me like a new start because of the change in routine. Your day-to-day life got shaken up anyway so it seemed like a good time to make changes, initiate projects or get back to some things abandoned over the summer. A time of fresh starts, self-evaluation and reflection, for some maybe, even divorce...

A recent US study revealed that marriage break-ups peak not only after Christmas but also at the end of summer, possibly caused by family rows and disappointing holidays that fail to mend growing rifts in relationships.

Whether we want to face up to it

FRESH START: A time for self-evaluation and reflection. or not, it’s quite clear that civilisation itself is being shaken up pretty forcefully too by the global threat from disease, climate change, crime, financial crises, terrorism, etc. We’ve got the

whole lot going on at once.

Yes, but what’s this got to do with divorce? Like so many things, it’s out of control and costing an arm and a leg (Britain reputedly the divorce capital of the

world due to mega-payouts). Disasters of volcanic proportions start with bubbles of gas long before we start to see lava flowing.

Years ago we were warned about the overuse of antibiotics,

now some are no longer effective.

How long before an incurable plague-like disease wrong-foots us? Ebola hasn’t disappeared simply because we don’t hear much about it anymore.

Basically, we’ve left too much to fate by thinking ‘it’ll never happen.’ Heck, all around us the social and economic fabric of our world is being slowly chipped away at, a situation becoming increasingly serious, together with the potential for knock-on effects.

The problem with the culture which has built up today is that many of us want all the material goodies which go with today’s lifestyles, but don’t want to give anything back. Time to turn over more than a new leaf then?

Conned all the time Mike Senker

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man WHY do I feel like I’m getting conned all the time? Take currency exchange. Before Brexit we were getting about 1.30 something for the euro against the pound then overnight it dropped like a stone down to as low as about 1.11. It drifted about a little but then the kids broke up from school and you know that as soon as that happens it ain’t going anywhere but down because the thieving bankers control it.

My daughter went to the post office in the UK to get some euros. On their website they were offering 1.13 but when she checked what she got it worked out at 1.05. She was still in the post office and said she thought they had made a mistake but was told the 1.13 rate was if you ordered it online. She said, ‘Oh OK I don’t want this rate’ and the woman said, ‘Sorry, the transaction has been done. If we buy them back you will lose more money.’ Is that a con or what? I mean it’s the Post Office, not some back street money change place. Needless to say she got no satisfaction.

But this has been going on my whole life with these big institutions. Remember endowment mortgages? The general idea was you paid interest only on your mortgage and then you took out a policy to cover the loan itself. Surprise, surprise it never happened that the policy covered the loan. Thousands and thousands of people landed up in big trouble. Why? Because they were conned!

Who by? Big insurance companies and their brokers that sold it to you.

How about being charged £100 to be told you have no money in your account? How many times have you tried to make a claim on your insurance to be told by your first point of contact that ‘Sorry that’s not covered?’ Or, in my case,‘Sorry your fully comprehensive, all singing, all dancing cover doesn’t cover the holes in your tiles that the flood caused, even though the first surveyor that came round said it did and in fact sent someone round to fix them, but the crap they filled the holes with came out the first time the floor was cleaned! Then the second one says,‘Nah not covered.’

PPI - we were told we had to have that. No we didn’t. Liar liar pants on fire Mr Big Banker! Then, to add insult to injury, firms popped up that conned you when you tried to get it back! I could actually carry on about all the cons but I’ve run out of space.

Car eco-stickers AS part of the series, we answer some common driving questions and keep you updated on the latest driving and road news kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

ECO CLASSIFICATION: Vehicle owners will receive a letter from the DGT. OVER the next month or so, 100,000 vehicle owners across Spain will receive a letter from the DGT detailing their vehicle’s ecofriendly characteristics. A sticker will accompany the letter to denote the eco classification. Placing the sticker on the vehicle is voluntary, but it is advisable as it highlights the environmentally friendly rating of the vehicle which will also add value if the vehicle is ever sold. The DGT is advising the sticker to be placed underneath the ITV sticker in the top right of the front windshield.

Many owners have already received theirs, especially in Madrid and Barcelona.

There are four classifications in the national vehicle register of the DGT based on environmental concerns: Zero emissions: Moped, tricycles, light vans, vehicles over eight seats and vehicles

transporting goods classified as battery electric vehicles (BEV) and electric vehicles with extended range (REEV) and plug-in hybrid vehicles with a minimum range of 40km, will fall into this category.

Eco: Cars, light vans, vehicles with over eight seats and vehicles transporting goods classified as plug-in hybrid vehicles with less than a 40km range.

Class C: This is for petrol fuelled passenger cars and light vans registered from January 2006 and diesel vehicles from 2014 as well as those with more than eight seats and freight, registered from 2014.

Class B: Petrol passenger cars and light vans registered form January 2000 and diesel vehicles registered from January 2006 as well as vehicles with more than eight seats and freight, registered from 2005.

Who pays for water damage?

I live on the ground floor of a six-storey building. This building has a history of water leaking from the main drainage pipe due to union failure from pipes fed into it.

The Community in the past has informed me that this damage is not their responsibility.

This means that I have to locate the owners and pay for the repairs to both the offending pipe and also the damage to my apartment. I have previously been called upon to make such payments. Do I have some form of redress?

2. Electric ovens should have an ‘A’ energy rating because they’re the most energy efficient. For example, they can save you as much as 40 per cent on a ‘B’ rated oven.

3. Microwaves: buy a top quality microwave and use it as much as possible. They’re more

efficient than ovens as they only heat the food.

4. Dishwashers: a new modern dishwasher will definitely be more energy efficient than older models so will save you money and use less water.

5. Constantly used appliances: some are used 24/7 all year round, so these need to be as energy efficient as possible.

For your fridge/freezer, buy ‘A’+++ rated appliances, which

are the most energy efficient.

6. Electric kettle: yes I’ve included one of the most used electrical appliances in the home. Studies show an average household boils the kettle around 1,500 times a year. Buy a good quality ECO electric kettle, they use 20 per cent less energy than conventional kettles, so you can feel good about your energy savings while having a cup of tea or coffee.

7. Standby electric consumption: modern homes are constantly being filled with new electronic gadgets. You would be surprised how much energy is used over a year and wasted by appliances constantly plugged in to the electricity supply when not used or switched off.

I spent a few years in New Zealand learning self sufficiency gardening before returning to Australia where I ran my own gardening business, but after several years I learned the value of holidays.

With a career in government, I became a Head Gardener and developed an interest in research and design of gardens through a Diploma in Horticulture and State Training Board recognition as a qualified gardener.

To inspire others in the garden, I completed a parks and gardens supervision certificate that lead to a position responsible for public parks including a Botanic Garden.

I didn’t lose touch with growing veggies though with a year teaching a group of Australian aboriginal students a certificate course in organic gardening and managing a horticulture enterprise with hydroponic, greenhouse and open field production of various market garden produce.

public open spaces and I became responsible for all parks and public open spaces in a region the size of the island of Mallorca.

Winding down from such a hectic life, I moved to Mallorca and started gardening

here in Spain. It soon lead to gardening and consulting services to some of the finest properties in the Baleares.

I hope to share with you some of what I have learned.

Taking care of almonds THE days are starting to get noticeably shorter, which is a good reminder that we need to plan through autumn for the coming winter months in the garden. The heat, dryness and wind all take their toll on the various susceptible plants over

summer, so autumn is a good time to start pruning back dried off branches, twigs and foliage.

It’s the main harvest time for olives, almonds, grapes and various other Mediterranean fare. For almonds, I use a traditional pole to knock down the

almonds for storage onto shade cloth spread out under the tree to catch the harvest.

Funnelling the almonds from the shade cloth into sacks, after winnowing and de-husking, I take the sacks to the local village that has an ancient almond crushing machine to get the shells off. Then it’s just a matter of coaxing the children to help sort them into jars for later use.

Many don’t know that you don’t need to wait for almonds to dry out in autumn to eat them. During spring and summer I pick almonds on the lower branches by hand. I eat some in spring when still translucent, soft and chewy, like a fruit. In summer they are white and perfect to eat or make almond milk, which has a richer and creamier texture and is easier to make in summer, without any soaking of dried nuts necessary.

Depending on the variety you have, the husks are soft and easy to peel off before autumn.

I prune the almond trees straight after leaf fall as they prepare themselves for winter and produce their spectacular blossoms early in the new year.

IF your dog has doggy odour there could be many causes and there are many solutions.

It can be caused by the dog rolling in decomposing organic material. It’s a favourite fragrance of most dogs, and is usually cured by a good bath.

Odour might be due to excessive skin oil. Usually shampoo will get rid of this and strip it out. Some dogs require weekly baths and in be-

tween you can use dry shampoo.

Cover up the smell with colognes for dogs (never use human cologne) most vets stock ‘Desodorante para perros,’ there’s also one for cats.

A change in diet could be in order.

The food you’re using could result in excess oil in the skin and coat.

Try a food with a lower fat content or foods containing Yucca schideriga extract. This extract from the

yukka plant results in stools and urine which is less smelly, Eagle is one brand.

Better nutrition in general may help. If buying cheap food from a supermarket try feeding a better quality food, such as a Super Premium like Hills Science Diet or Euakanuba (Eams) Purina or Pedigree.

An addition of vitamins and minerals and particularly biotin has been

found to help.

Excessive body odour could be a sign of illness. Offensive odour is a sign of cancer, seborrhea, mange and a variety of other diseases. Have the vet check your dog thoroughly.

Yeast and other infections in the ears are common and cause odour, so seek experienced help. Mange is quite nasty smelling, and if your dog smells in the

hindquarters, it could be a problem with hair matted around the rectum, or with the anal sacs.

The anal sacs are located to the left and right of the anus and produce a sour or rancid-smelling, watery secretion that’s brownish in colour. They usually empty when your dog poops, sometimes in an explosive way if the dog is frightened or stressed. Sometimes they don’t empty and you or your vet must do this. The clue is when you see your dog ‘scooting’ along the floor, dragging his rear on the ground.

Offensive mouth odours could be due to gingivitis or periodontal (gum) disease. This also requires treatment from your vet. It can also be a sign of corprophagy (stool eating) as some dogs eat their own stools to conserve enzymes which are in short supply. Other dogs will eat horse manure, cow manure and dog and cat feces, because they taste good to your dog.

Some doggy odour is natural but if it’s bad have a chat with your vet.

THERE comes a point when a dog becomes inseparable from a favourite toy, and sometimes the most placid, happy go lucky dog will turn into a staunch defender of a small piece of plastic, bearing teeth and growling in earnest to keep the toy in their possession. They take it with them everywhere.

By Matthew Elliott THE Goodwood Revival race meeting took place over the weekend in the historic motoring and vintage event’s biggest outing since the festival debuted in 1998, drawing in hundreds of thousands of spectacularly dressed spectators, motoring legends, enthusiasts and a galactic wardrobe of the weird and wonderful.

Billed as ‘the only historic race meeting to be staged entirely in period dress’ the Goodwood Revival really is a special affair and drew exactly the breed of special cars you’d expect for an event of this magnitude.

Racing highlights included a terrific line-up of 1930s-50s era BMWs to mark the brand’s centenary and compete for the Lavant Cup; a contest between older generation Aston Martin DBs, a chaotic screeching affair featuring

Dodgy dealers A BBC expose aired on wheeler dealer busting programme Fake Britain has found that fake xenon headlight bulbs are flooding the market and putting thousands of lives at risk.

Most are sold through dodgy internet auction sites and can blind other road users, wreck car facades, and typically fall apart soon after they’re fitted.

Genuine Philips xenon bulbs can cost upwards of €100 giving rise to a lucrative underground market not just in Britain, but also in Spain and right across the world.

Last year a huge campaign launched by Philips to raise awareness of the dangers of counterfeit bulbs saw more than 10,000 seized and destroyed.

Meanwhile the true toll of countless accidents attributable to the forgery may never be known.

By Matthew Elliott WITH more than 17,000 votes, the quest to find the greatest supercar of all time has been whittled down to

just 11 remaining contenders, representing each decade from the very beginning of the 20th century. The public now have until the end of September to cast their vote for their favourite before the greatest supercar of all time is announced at the Classic and Sports Car Show in October.

Beginning from the humble origins of the pre-1914 era, the finalists are as follows: The Mercedes 1908

GP which could hit 100mph more than 100 years ago; the Bentley 4 1 / 2 litre Blower which defined the glitz and glamour of the 1920s; the Alpha Romeo 8C which could easily take on 120mph in a streamlined engineering wonder; the Jaguar XK120 known as the classic of the post-war years; and the famous Mercedes 300SL Gullwing, a space-age 140mphhitting mind-boggling machine.

From the 1960s onwards the design and capacity of emergent supercars escalated dramatically and contenders from then until today include the Lamborghini Miura which could outrun aeroplanes on the 60’s tarmac; the Countach which embraced the V12 engine and could go well in excess of 170mph when duty called; the Ferrari F40 of the 1980s which was the last model to be signed off by Enzo him-

self; the McLaren F1 which essentially revolutionised the entire notion of the supercar; the Bugatti Veyron which roared across 2005 in a 100bhp quadruple-turbo eight-litre W16 engine to claim the ‘fastest car in the world’ title; and of course this decade’s McLaren P1, a hybrid hyper-car which could smash 62mph in just 2.6 seconds and costs more than €1 million.

By Matthew Elliott MALLORCA’s prodigal son Jorge Lorenzo was involved in a vicious spat with personal nemesis and erstwhile Yamaha colleague Valentino Rossi at a bizarre press conference following Sunday’s MotoGP race in Misano, Italy.

Joining race winner Dani Pedrosa, who stormed to victory to become the eighth different winner in eight consecutive races, Lorenzo and Rossi saw their personal animosity bubble over at the press affair as they clashed over Rossi’s aggressive overtake on the tracks.

As Lorenzo described Rossi’s move as too aggressive and not as ‘clean’ as other riders, the Italian burst into laughter, setting up a terse public exchange between the two, who bickered for a full minute and again to their respective national media after the event wound up.
