Lovers on the island

Rough morning A RAVING lunatic raced shirtless through the streets of Palma de Mallorca on Sunday, August 28, first hurling a chair at a woman who tried to intervene before trying to hijack a passing car. He was quickly arrested once police arrived on the scene before being frogmarched to the local psychiatric unit for treatment.

Water for life TEN non-profit organisations have been awarded grants for environmental education activities, most of which are related to water.

The Directorate General of Environmental Education, Environmental Quality

and Waste has awarded €4,110 to the GOB Mallorca for the ‘Clear water: the reality of water in Mallorca’ project, and a further €4,821 for the GOB Menorca for a similar initiative.

EX-CORONATION STREET star Michelle Keegan and her husband Mark Wright are in Mallorca for a romantic jaunt, and the couple shared a sweet Instagram shot on Sunday, August 28.

The post followed a series of paparazzi images which appeared to show them sharing a somewhat tense dinner together at an al fresco restaurant.

Keegan and Wright, both 29-years-old, are sharing a well-deserved break after working flat out for several months, during which they have rarely been together.

Speaking of his excitement about their getaway, Mark told OK! magazine: “It’s going to be exciting because we’ve both been working for a good few months.

“I’ve been up and down the country and so has Michelle, so it’ll be great when we finally get that time off - it’s been a long time coming.”

The pair have recently been plagued by rumours that their romance is on the rocks, but the evidence here appears to suggest otherwise.

Buyer beware WE all know that it’s a scam, because pretty much everything these days is. The key is to be smart about it. Get cheaper insurance from the UK, take photos, drive carefully, and scream like a madman if they start with their shenanigans!

Expect the worst WE returned a car once to Alicante airport only to be told we had to pay an extra €400 for a scratch which was already there when we got it! We didn’t have a camera and at the time thought it was so minor we just ignored it. Shudder to think if we had no back-up insurance.

Did you take out our insurance? No? Ok sir, we will have to charge you €850...now how would you like to pay?”

Not many things are more infuriating than being ripped off at the end of your travels. Especially when you predicted it would happen, took measures to prevent it, and yet had to stand there seething as your pockets were emptied.

Every year thousands of British residents and tourists fall foul of the airport car rental giants who offer seemingly reasonably priced deals.

They encourage the traveller to explore Spain or use a vehicle just for those little journeys that we all undertake.

But these deals are too often turning out to mask an organised pricefixing cartel who have engineered their hire policies to ensure they turn a healthy profit in what is a very cutthroat industry. But should this be at

Not all car hire firms are the same of course but there are some chains present at Spanish airports which try to ensure you rarely walk away having paid the originally agreed upon fee.

A highly competitive offer will be made for a week-long car rental but then, upon collection, customers will be told of the prudent value of taking out full insurance. Some readers have told EWN this is given with the same cheerful promise you might find when asked outside a football ground for a few quid to have someone ‘watch your car.’

That insurance typically costs at least as much as the entire rental deal, upwards of €5 per day, is not

required in any legal sense travellers complain, and many customers will have insurance policies that cover damage under €1,000 anyway, typically for around €50 per year.

Any extras, whether sat nav, a booster seat, WiFi or a second driver will be offered for an expensive fee and you will be asked to pay for a full tank of petrol, often at well above market price.

When you return the car, rest assured there’ll be a full sweep and, no matter how angelically you might think you drove it, there’s a strong chance that an eagle-eyed attendant will uncover some rubber mark or chip that was barely noticeable before. Suddenly this represents a glaring €500 hole in your bank account until your insurance comes through, assuming you have some.

If you were smart you went on a photography spree when you hired the car, covering every nook and cranny with your phone, dating the photos and having them handy as evidence.

If there is a ‘new,’ yet achingly minor dust mark somewhere, then sometimes simply kicking up a fuss can save you a few hundred euros, especially when there’s no clear cut

damage for them to point to, and a crowd of waiting customers yet to hand over their own hard-earned cash.

Whatever you do, don’t leave it to fate and be tempted by the ‘leave the keys in the box’ approach. Make sure that when you return the car you have it confirmed that no additional charges will be made and you do not risk fuming over a bill levied from a thousand miles away.

Keep an eye out online for reviews of particular car rental firms but remember, at the airport they are all essentially in the same business.

For some that means tactics which end with an angry consumer who is now out of pocket.

The market is an oligopoly with customers feeling at their most vulnerable: stressed out, in a queue, in a foreign country, and in desperate need of a car. So, if you’re renting soon from an airport firm, be smart and prepare yourself.

A camera, back-up insurance and careful driving should be your weapons of choice, and leave yourself plenty of time for a boisterous exchange when you return the car.

Who knows, perhaps with this mindset you can relish the challenge.

Corrupt economy IT’S a cartel like any other cartel, whether we are talking about drugs, oil, or weapons.

The larger corporations rig the game in their favour and rake in the profits as the little people are left with no choice but to agree to the terms or make their lives much more difficult.

PARTY STRIP: Trouble once again in Magaluf.

By Matthew Elliott YOUNG British girls are selling their bodies in Maguluf as part of a highly-organised trade on the notorious party strip.

Former workers and witnesses have come forward to share their depressing stories with UK media which typically involve male tourists paying bars for ‘their time.’

Most of the girls involved are in their

early 20’s and work selling shots at bars and clubs, working on commission in a highly pressurised environment.

Paid a pittance unless they can sell hundreds of drinks a night, many resort to offering punters sex while some bars and girls will share a €300 fee if a man wants personal time with one of them.

Many websites lure British, and other European girls to Mallorca with promises

that they can earn vast sums of money.

Some are tempted by the cash on offer and hope to use it to pay off university fees, but they are usually ignorant as to the often violent underworld they are getting involved in.

Job descriptions on certain websites range from ‘vodka brand models’ to ‘sugar daddy cruise ship models’ and even ‘YouTube blind-date candidates.’

young daughters aged seven and 10, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The van driver suffered only minor injuries but is being treated for severe shock.

The victims, who come from the Bavarian town of

Freising, are thought to have been on the island for only a few days.

Their deaths were confirmed by the German Embassy in Spain.

The accident brings the number of deaths on Mallor-

ca’s roads to 37 this year - 12 more than over the same period last year.

The crash is said to be the worst single loss of life since 1997 when four teenage boys died on their way home from a party.

Probe into sick leave of police officers OFFICERS suspected of corruption in Palma are to be investigated over allegations that they are illegally taking time off work as sick leave.

Councillor for public and government affairs Aurora Jhardi has requested a review of the sickness permissions granted to the officers.

An online nationwide poll invited millions of Spaniards and local residents to suggest which traditional delicacies were worthy of inclusion in the culinary list and, although the ensaimada cracked the top 20, joining the magnificent seven proved too elusive even for this delicious dish.

Simply made from flour, eggs, water, wheat, sugar, mother dough and a decadent pork lard known as saim, the handmade pastry has encouraged replicas across the world,

none of which taste quite like the original.

Once the wonders were whittled down to a magnificent seven, a fair sample of Spanish fare was on display with octopus dish ‘pulpo a la gallega,’ Canary speciality ‘papas arrugadas,’ the iconic ‘jamon iberico,’ ‘tortilla de patatas, and paella valenciana,’ and desserts ‘quesada pasiega,’ and ‘paparajotes Murcianos’ comprising the heart-stopping hit squad.

Now that the seven wonders have been agreed upon by the powers of online polling, there is a movement to see Spanish cuisine recognised alongside that such classic culinary traditions as those emanating from France and Japan.

VALLDEMOSSA: The villa is located close to the town.

THE beautiful Mallorcan villa owned by Hollywood power couple Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, has become slightly more affordable after roughly eight million euros (unofficially) was knocked off the asking price.

Potential buyers will have to be fairly flush as the 247 acre estate will still command an asking price of at least 40 million euros, according to Sotheby’s Mallorca office which handles the property.

Known as S’Estaca, the Valldemossa villa was first purchased by Douglas with his first wife in 1989, for just over three million euros. The Oscar winning actor and producer forked out even more money on elaborate renovations, including a home cinema, huge vineyard and private library.

With more than 10,000 square feet of prime space and magnificent sea views, Douglas has had the vineyards and olive groves tended for more than 20 years, entertaining fellow Hollywood legends Jack Nicolson and Michelle Pfeiffer along the way.

The presence of Douglas and Zeta-Jones has been relatively muted in recent years, the property went on sale in late 2014, although the significant investment required made it a hard sell.

Mallorca has a long and glorious history as a prime destination for the world’s wealthy elites. Earlier this summer Brad Pitt bought himself a 3.5 million euro villa in Port d’Andratx, having spotted it while filming on the island.

National park or private party?

NATIONAL PARK: A gem of the natural world.

By Matthew Elliott JUST over an hour from Mallorca, the Cabrera National Park is a gem of the natural world, with a unique marine ecosystem and one of the most well preserved sea beds in the Mediterranean. Little wonder that the gorgeous archipelago, enviously isolated and difficult to reach, is now home to an elite set of superyacht owners, treating the area like their own private beach.

Environmentalists claim the area is becoming something of a beach club and question how this fits with the government’s duty to protect the islands’ natural heritage. The Terraferida group suggested a new sign should read ‘The Cabrera National Park Beach Club’ and has condemned the use of virgin waters for the private parties it has catalogued with photographic evidence.

The islands’ isolation put them into something of a legal

limbo. Typically in Spain beaches are considered public and private use is only available with explicit approval, but wealthier citizens can get around the law by chartering private boats to public beaches.

The situation is growing tense with outrage on social media over images of Arab sheiks playing on an inflatable water park amid Cabrera’s tranquil waters as though it were their own private fiefdom.

This week the Balearic government finally stepped in to take action, but the impact is unlikely to deter the superyacht owners. Fines of just over €1,000 have been issued to the owner of three yachts but one of them costs €65,000 per day to hire, meaning the ‘fine’ is a mere inconvenience.

The question now becomes, how can the authorities pose any kind of reasonable economic threat to these people?

Tourist dies in third floor fall A 20-YEAR-OLD British tourist has died after falling from the third floor of the BH Mallorca hotel in Magaluf.

The emergency services were called when the body of the man, who has not been identified, was found on the pavement on August 31.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are still investigating the circumstances of the incident.

Unseasonal weather temps

New flights RYANAIR has announced a new route connecting Palma with the Polish city of Wroclaw. Two weekly flights will start from March 28, 2017.

To mark the new route, a seat sale will be in operation until September 6 for those booking flights to Wroclaw during April and May next year with flights from â‚Ź29.99.

POLLENSA: Recorded lowest temperature for nine years.

By John Smith UNLIKE parts of the mainland which have seen very high temperatures during August, Mallorca has experienced the reverse with some of the lowest temperatures of the past 10 years, according to figures released by weather service AEMET.

The drop below the average was not dramatic but Palma saw its lowest average temperature for six years. Pollensa recorded its lowest for nine years although forecasts for the next three months suggest it will be hotter than normal.

To go with the slight drop in temperature, there was a huge drop in rain for the month.

By Matthew Elliott DECREASING jellyfish numbers around the Balearic Islands and across the wider Mediterranean should not be too much cause for concern according to the Spanish Institute of Oceanography.

The research indicates that the dwindling population of the archaic translucent creature are largely due to natural movements of the species.

There are typically two distinct jellyfish periods in the Mediterranean, with one featuring vastly higher numbers than the other.

The data indicates that we are now in the

second epoch, which will see lower concentrations throughout the next four or five years.

Rising jellyfish numbers in recent years have concerned environmentalists who blame climate change and overfishing and argue larger numbers represent an underlying problem with pollution.

Jellyfish typically regulate the uninhibited growth of plankton, which is itself often the result of organic contamination and an unnatural food web gripping the seabed. With less plankton below the surface, it appears that, for the next few years at least, their job is done.

A SPATE of high-profile burglaries across Palma has culminated in the audacious theft of jewellery worth more than â‚Ź400,000 with the culprits remaining at large and their trail baffling police detectives.

Lying in wait for their target to leave his apartment, the crooks snuck into the luxurious home where they found objects of obvious value computers, phones, cameras and cash - but the real prize was the keys to a neighbouring apartment, where they found far more substantial loot. Various tools and implements were left at the scene, curiously alongside a valuable earring unknown to the victims, but no fingerprints could be found.

Many burglaries take place in August when residents often leave their homes unattended for weeks at a time.

Palma was also recently identified as an area at high risk of home robberies by a private corporation specialising in jewellery theft.

EUR weekly currency update The highlight for the euro came on Monday when the leaders of France, Germany and Italy met on an aircraft carrier to discuss important stuff. It was the euro’s only newsworthy outing in a week of European Central Bank silence and unremarkable €Z economic data. Preliminary purchasing managers’ index readings from Euroland pointed to continued growth in the private sector despite decreased business confidence.

The US dollar and British pound both did better than the euro, strengthening by half a cent and one cent respectively. Sterling came close to being the week’s top performer as investors continued to close out their short positions, encouraged by better than expected UK data. Support for the dollar was motivated by a growing belief that the Federal Reserve will indeed raise its benchmark interest rate this year. Investors will be paying close attention to the Fed chairperson when she makes a speech today.

USD weekly currency update Ecostats from the States were fairly thin on

the ground and painted a mixed picture. New home sales were particularly strong in July while existing (second-hand) home sales fell by more than expected. The purchasing managers’ index for the manufacturing sector indicated slowing growth despite a 4.4% monthly jump in durable goods orders. All the while, investors were revising their expectations for US interest rates as a string of Federal Reserve took turns to offer their opinions. Financial futures pricing a week ago put the chance of a rate hike next month at one in five; now increased to one in three.

Sterling put in the best performance among the premier league currencies as investors cut back their short positions in the light of better than expected UK economic data. It added two thirds of a US cent, though the dollar did pick up half a cent against the euro.

CAD weekly currency update Among the major currencies the Loonie was one of the weakest performers, losing two and a quarter cents to sterling and dropping two thirds of a US cent. Last Friday’s Canadian economic

902 887 243 mallorca@moneycorp.com data had more than a little to do with it: whilst inflation was bang on target at 1.3% retail sales for June looked fairly dismal, falling by -0.1% on the month and by -0.8% when motor cars were taken out of the reckoning.

The pound and the US dollar, meanwhile, were doing well. Sterling was buoyed by a continuing cut-back in short positions following better than expected UK economic data. The US dollar was wining support as investors revised their expectations for American interest rates. Pricing a week ago in the financial futures

market gave only a 20% probability to a rate hike next month. Today that was up to 32%, still not odds-on but no longer out of the question.

AUD weekly currency update For no good reason the Australian dollar was just about unchanged on the week against the US dollar and the Japanese yen. The three had nothing in common, least of all interest rates: Australia’s 2% benchmark is the highest among major currencies, Japan’s is negative and America’s might rise slightly this year. It was that latter prospect that helped the Greenback on its way.

The yen continued to defy gravity in the face of a strong possibility that the Bank of Japan will step up its money-printing programme in response to persistent deflation. The Aussie just toddled along, untroubled by economic data or central bank comments.

Sterling beat them all as investors cut back further on short positions following stronger than expected UK economic data. Overall the Aussie lost a cent to the pound.

Thieves are selling sand online

TORRENT DE PAREIS: One of the most abundant sources.

A GERMAN national is orchestrating an online auction flogging off sand from Mallorca’s most emblematic beaches and netting a healthy profit in the process.

An outraged Mallorcan resident uncovered the affair on eBay and marched straight to the ministry of the environment with evidence that an individual with the alias ‘Rollochef ’ was selling batches of sand from all across the island.

Escorca mayor, Antoni Solivellas has denounced the enterprise

as an affront to the heritage of humanity, while Andratx chief Jaume Porsell pledged to open a full investigation into Rollochef’s sand-stealing network.

The environmentally unfriendly entrepreneur is allegedly auctioning around 65 grams of pristine Mallorcan sand at a starting bid of €3.90, with an immediate purchase price of €5.90.

Product descriptions highlight the sand’s beach of origin and describe the tranquil setting in terms typically found on the back of a wine bottle, eulogising canyons, cliffs and gorges in po-

etic prose. Torrent de Pareis in west Mallorca is identified as one of the most abundant sources of the white stuff.

Taking sand from Mallorca’s beaches is illegal and signs abound across the island warning tourists against stealing sand and rocks as souvenirs. The practice seriously aggravates Mallorca’s continuing problem with coastal erosion and has been highlighted as one of many distinct threats to local ecosystems. The particular sand on the shores of Mallorca is uniquely connected to marine life and not easily replaced.

City could run out of water PALMA faces running out of water in September unless the heavens unburden themselves of rain. Crucial reservoirs and reservations are running at extremely low levels, far worse than at the same time last year, while water consumption in Mallorca’s capital has grown considerably.

Nobody is expected to die of thirst, nor will there be an exodus to the mainland, but taxpayers face a substantial hike on payments for desalinated

water imports, already expected to reach €8.6 million this year.

Emaya, the company which operates the Cuber and Gorg Blau reservoirs have estimated that it will be impossible to extract more water in four weeks time unless they are replenished by adequate rains.

Both reservoirs are at 33 per cent capacity, contrasted to 53 per cent in September 2015, and have been able to provide only 1.3 billion litres of water this summer between them,

compared to almost 10 billion last summer.

Purchasing desalinated water is prohibitively expensive as a long-term solution and the well reserves are also drying up as population pressure continues to worsen the situation.

Palma’s water demand in August was up 11 per cent on last year as record numbers of tourists flooded the island, largely oblivious to warnings seen by residents to use water sparingly.

FACTORY FIRE: Crews put out burning wooden pallets.

By John Smith EMERGENCY services attended a factory fire in Son Llaüt at Santa Maria Island at the premises of ice cream maker Frigo.

The source of the blaze is thought to have been a truck which caught fire along with a number of wooden pallets.

Fire crews were sent to the factory, in addition to a helicopter which dropped water in a bid to prevent the fire from spreading to a nearby tract of cultivated woodland.

After nearly five hours the fire was brought under control leaving a cloud of smoke in the area for several hours.

Fuel allowance scandal

By Matthew Elliott BRITISH pensioners living in Spain who had their Winter Fuel Payment stopped by the UK government will be furious to hear that the methodology used by the Department of Work and Pensions was fundamentally flawed.

The DWP previously attempted to deflect anger over the drastic measures, which affected upwards of 100,000 British expats across the continent, by claiming that it was “overly complex” and “prohibitively expensive” to base the threshold on more advanced temperature data than simple national averages.

It has now emerged that the DWP did in fact have access to data which would have radically changed how they defined

who is entitled to the allowance which, at up to £300 (€350), can make an enormous difference over a long winter.

The bizarre system currently in place measures the average temperature of the country in which claimants live, leading to outrageous outcomes. Spain is deemed too hot on the grounds the average winter temperature is 5.6 degrees warmer than Britain’s warmest region, neglecting the fact housing is simply not designed for the cold.

Off duty police officer saves two

RIGHT PLACE: Both children were saved.

By John Smith AN off-duty member of the National Police enjoying the sun and the beach of Son Serra de Marina noticed that despite the fact that red flags were flying and the sea was rough, two young children were swimming in the sea.

He saw that they appeared to be having difficulty, possibly because of the undertow and when he heard them call for help in English he did not hesitate to dive in to help the children as the lifeguard had completed his period of duty and had left.

He first managed to get hold of the young girl who

appeared to be about 10years-old as she was in the most difficulty and then returned for the younger boy who seemed to be about seven.

Both children were saved by the quick thinking of this off-duty officer who happened to be in the right place at the right time.

N o le s s tha n 31 pe ople have been charged with offences connected with the breach of Intellectual Property rights and the operation has confiscated more than 10,000 fake garments or industrial transfers for use on t-shirts together with 13 industrial textile printing machines.

Officers visited 14 commercial retail outlets and three industrial buildings in the municipalities of Son CastellĂł, El Arenal de Palma , El A re na l Lluc ma jor C a n Pic a fort, Pa lma nova and Manacor. They also investigated a website which

offered the items for sale within the Spanish mainland.

Bungling robber UNMASKED, wielding a fake gun and in full view of the security cameras, an incompetent robber badly injured an elderly female employee at a tobacconist being fleeing the scene with empty handed.

Police believe the time of the attack, at 9.30am in Palma on Sunday, suggests the culprit was a bumbling novice unaware that most shops have very little cash on a Sunday morning.

He was caught in the full glare of CCTV cameras and appears to have panicked when another customer entered the shop, striking the worker with the butt of the weapon and charging out of the shop.

The saleswoman was taken to hospital for treatment, but her injuries were not thought to be critical. Meanwhile the robber remains at large at the time of writing but will surely be apprehended soon.

animals roaming freely into fincas and farms, munching on grass and devouring shoots and fruit trees.

Although wild goats have been meandering around the area for decades, the problem

has intensified into plague proportions in recent years, causing property owners to set up fences to protect their produce.

Goats are even entering gardens and homes, with one Ger-

man resident awaking to find a dead goat in his swimming pool in a scene reminiscent of The Godfather. The situation has been reported to both the Local Police and the Balearic ministry of the environment.

The Americans have expressed disappointment the EC is investigating US corporations such as Apple, Google and Starbucks, accusing them of improperly avoiding payment of taxes by use of loopholes. In most cases, those approached have entered into agreements to pay additional taxes.

In complete contrast however, Australian carrier Qantas has seen its profits double allowing it to make its first dividend payment to shareholders since 2009 and to pay a bonus to staff of $A3,000 (€2,000).

In 2014 it announced record losses but has achieved this turn around by cutting capacity and staffing as well as enjoying a major benefit from the drop in fuel prices.

Spanish growth ALMOST despite itself, the Spanish economy in real terms continues to see growth albeit not enormous in GDP according to the National Statistics Institute (INE) which has announced that the economy grew by 0.8 per cent in the second quarter of 2016.

It’s not all good news as overall growth has slowed down but any rise is considered positive and the growth is thanks in part to relatively stable household consumption bolstered by the fact that unemployment continues downwards with nearly 500,000 new jobs created in the past 12 months.

THE UK vote to leave the EU on June 23, 2016 has weakened the pound significantly but it’s only part of the story behind Sterling weakness. On August 4, the Bank of England announced a very aggressive stimulus programme to stave off the threat of a UK recession. This caught investors by surprise, particularly as Mr Carney and his colleagues at the Bank of England (BOE) decided not to take any action in July.

This new programme of measures is proving to be the driving force behind the lower value of the pound. With interest rates cut to a record low of 0.25 per cent, the ‘big deal’ for Sterling right now is the Bank is once again active and ready to flood the markets with cash. This was clearly signalled as they announced plans to restart an asset buying programme to purchase UK government debt (Gilts) by adding an additional £60 billion to the market.

Gilt futures, which in turn pushed down the returns to bond holders with some short dated bond yields turning negative for the first time in their 300-year history. This dynamic could actually continue as the BOE has left the door open to further rate cuts and more quantitative easing.

member Ian McCafferty, wrote in The Times that further quantitative easing and interest rate cuts are also a real possibility in the future, which signals the Bank is willing to do ‘whatever it takes’ to achieve economic growth without acknowledging the negative impact these measures will have on pension pots.

Ros Altman, a former minister under David Cameron, was quick to point out the BOE stimulus has the potential to tip the UK pension industry into a funding crisis as pension funds are some of the biggest investors in gilts, and traditionally offer a relatively safe and reliable source of income.

After Mr Cafferty’s article in The Times, the pound fell lower and the negative bias is set to continue as investors will surely turn their attention to data coming out of the UK. Traders will look for any weakening of the UK economic outlook.

On a positive note, August’s UK manufacturing results were mixed, with industrial production better at 1.6 per cent while manufacturing production declined to 0.9 per cent.

After the vote, the outlook has materially deteriorated and prompted the BOE to pre-empt an economic slowdown. A Reuters poll points to a mild recession, with the economy contracting by 0.1 per cent in the third and fourth quarter as firms hold off investment. Most of those surveyed thought that the BOE will chop rates in November, and expect fiscal stimulus in the autumn statement. Governor Mark Carney seems to be hinting monetary policy has limits and fiscal policy could prove a more effective fix.

New polymer banknote for Gibraltar

By John Smith AS announced at last August’s commemoration of the birth of Sir Joshua Hassan, the Government of Gibraltar is to issue a new polymer £100 banknote featuring his image.

Not only will this be the first ever legal tender £100 sterling banknote to be produced in polymer, it will also be Gibraltar’s first in this material. The note will have a smoother feel than traditional banknote paper and be more durable while staying cleaner for longer.

The n e w p o l y m e r b an k n o te s have been produced by De La Rue and printed on Safeguard® substrate. The design will be similar to the existing paper banknote but with a large clear window showing a holog r a m wh i c h c a n b e s e e n from both the front and back of the note and which will be highly reflective, showing images of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the letter ‘G’ for Gibraltar.

The launch of any new banknote product is both expensive and potentially catastrophic if anything goes wrong which is why manufacturers often use smaller administrations as ‘guinea pigs’ to test new materials.

The loss of such a client whilst embarrassing would not be financially damaging, unlike any situation where a major central bank could cancel contracts worth millions of pounds.

One of the best remembered disasters in recent years saw the hologram on a special Australia Bicentenary $10 bank note issued in 1988 fall off when the note was being demonstrated as being almost indestructible on TV. There will probably be more demand for this new Gibraltar note from collectors than those who wish to use it although as has previously been reported, certain sections of the financial community have been lobbying for the withdrawal of high value bank notes whi ch ar e popul ar wi t h m oney launderers and smugglers.

Important changes at WhatsApp

APP ADJUSTMENTS: May alienate existing users if adverts are introduced.

By John Smith PARTICULARLY popular in Spain, although it is used by many millions around the world, the WhatsApp messaging system - purchased by Facebook for $19 billion (€16.8 billion) in 2014 - saw few modifications following the acquisition, but that is about to change in two major ways.

Firstly, it plans to share member ’s phone numbers with Facebook as it argues that this will help the social network provide more appropriate friend suggestions and also apparently will allow it to direct more relevant advertisements to its users.

Whilst WhatsApp users may be somewhat upset by the sharing of user information and also details of how often they use the service, there is an assurance that the actual messages between WhatsApp users will remain confidential due to the oft trumpeted fact that the messages are encrypted.

For those who object to their information being shared, it will be possible to opt out provided that users follow a procedure detailed on the Whatsapp website.

In order to find this information you have to enter the Legal Information section which states ‘If you are an existing user, you can choose not to have your WhatsApp account information shared with Facebook to improve your Facebook ads and products experiences. Existing users who accept our updated Terms and Privacy Policy will have an additional 30 days to make this choice by going to Settings > Account.’

In other words, you can’t opt out on the website but have to wait until you are invited to agree to updated terms and conditions which will be received on your mobile phone at which time you will then need to take the necessary action to opt out!

As nothing truly comes for nothing, the ‘joint ‘company

will also ‘assist’ its clients by allowing adverts to be sent as WhatsApp messages from businesses that are prepared to pay for the privilege.

It is not known whether it will be possible to opt out of this service as one of the attractions of WhatsApp is that it has been advert and generally spam free.

Experts expect there will be quite considerable testing to see whether a proliferation of advertising messages will not just irritate users but also send them to look for other options, as no doubt rivals will be prepared to invest in producing more friendly Apps.

Having spent so much money to acquire WhatsApp and having made promises about the retention of its independence, Facebook needs to be very careful that it doesn’t alienate existing users and put off potential users by irritating them with too many marketing messages.

Ban the burkini? I say yes LEAPY LEE SAYS IT

OTHERS THINK IT I AM 100 per cent in agreement that the beach shroud or ‘Burkini’ should be completely banned from public bathing sites. The reason? It offends me.

In the countries supported by those who follow these practices, it is not only against the law to even show a glimmer of flesh, the full weight of the law will drop on anyone who seeks to do so.

I have seen western women’s arms and lower legs struck by ‘religious police,’ who carry thick bamboo canes explicitly for this purpose.

And this to foreign women, who have tried to respect the country they are in, but unfortunately find their Kaftans have not quite reached low enough or are not long sleeved enough to satisfy these hypocritical bigots. The reason? It ‘offends’ them.

Although I’m not in the habit of

bathing attire, can be made to feel totally uncomfortable lying next to a ‘holier than thou’ member of the

After the Second World War our countries were completely devoid of colour and variety. Vehicles and clothing were a drab mixture of grey and black.

Slowly but surely, we began to recover from the horrors of war and with it came the emergence of wonderful colours and fashions that played an important role in lifting us from the depression and misery inflicted by the conflict.

It therefore offends me to find parts of our societies being taken over by people, whose ancestors have played no part in the shaping of our countries, parading the pavements in depressive black shrouds and now wanting to extend their bigotry to our resorts and democratic places of fun and freedom.

Areas which have been fought and won for by men and women who had more courage in their little fingers than those millions of cowards fleeing from the countries they seem to want to emulate so badly.

Well you all offend me.

Vultures are morally indefensible CHANCELLOR, you will be aware that the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union by a small majority. A direct consequence of this vote produced a torrent of share selling, wiping billions of pounds off the market and, more importantly, reducing the value of the pound.

During the night of the vote on June 23, I read that many currency dealers stayed behind, at work, to ‘play the market’ and, when early indications suggested a remain victory was imminent, the value of sterling rose from $1.46 to $1.50. Many of these traders left for home believing that they would make a fortune.

When they returned to work the next day, to their horror, many had made huge losses as the pound’s value plummeted overnight. I read about some instances where they used their client’s money to make these ‘bets.’

On a personal note, as a pensioner living in Spain, the value of my, and my partner’s, pensions has plummeted by over 15 per cent - and our financial plight is getting worse by the day.

Chancellor, I therefore propose that we make the trading of currencies illegal. It is unethical and morally indefensible. In a supposed civilised and democratic society, we cannot allow a few ‘men at computer terminals’ who have only self-interest at heart and with only profit as their motive, to dictate and decide the financial worth of a country.

Currently they can, and do, target, and intentionally destabilise a country’s financial worth based upon nothing other than self-interest. A new way needs to be found which removes these financial vultures from controlling a country’s financial viability.

Disgusting dog owners

THEY say Spain is a dog loving nation and that may well be true, but dog owners should give the same feeling and respect to people who do not own dogs.

Every single day we have to walk a slalom course along the pavement to avoid pile after pile of dog excrement and when walking in the dark it’s even more strenuous, which takes the simple pleasure out of having a pleasant evening stroll.

Disgusting dog owners do not care less that the filthy unhygienic dog excrement they leave on the public street and do not pick up after their pets, can and often does get onto people’s shoes and clothing and eventually into their homes.

Real heroes LEAPY, being a regular reader of your column I thought I would email you about something that really got up my nose!

Last Monday morning on GMBTV, they had some of the Olympic winners on. Ok, but when they started calling them heroes that really got up my nose. I emailed them and requested that they stop abusing the word They are not heroes. Heroes are

Waste disposal WE have been a part of the expat community in Arboleas since last

year and benefited by what Spain has to offer - mainly the weather.

Notwithstanding this we are at a loss to understand the logic of the work recently carried out locally, primarily Los Carrascos. We have had new roads and drainage laid, through the village understandably, not however in the side roads. They replaced an existing road for the benefit of a ‘cycle’ track and a ‘footpath’ by a few hundred metres, at the end of which you land up on the old existing uneven pot-holed road anyway! They have even built a new ‘Disposal/Recycling Plant’ to save dumping rubbish on the hillside.

We find it incomprehensible that the local authority find it more of a

priority to spend money and use their resources on work, which frankly is not as much of a priority to the local residents as providing a mains connected sewage system.

The houses in our vicinity have been here for more than 15 years, and the authority have been taking money from the residents for all that time, yet they still cannot allocate funds to connect the main drains sewage system to the entire village.

So the residents can dispose of their rubbish waste in the nice newly built ‘Disposal Site’ but cannot dispose of their sewage waste!

In the article ‘Message for the People’ (Euro Weekly August 4 - 10) the mayor is quoted as saying “along with his councillors works hard every day to resolve any problems, prioritise solutions for the benefit of all residents and fulfil his obligations as mayor.”

I’m sure Los Carrascos is not the only area without mains sewage, so perhaps for those other areas as well, ‘mains drainage’ should now become a priority…

Burkini ban THIS is barbaric, degrading. If a woman wants to cover her flesh to avoid creepy men staring at her, forcing her to expose herself is bodily abuse. And since when was what we wear any of the police’s business?

It sounds horrific to think that in the 1960s in Benidorm women were arrested for wearing bikinis, but this is worse. One minute we’re told that if we wear short skirts then we’re ‘asking for’ unwanted male attention; next, women who cover themselves to avoid it are forced to undress at gunpoint and in public.

If I sat on the beach in jeans and a hoodie, would I be forced to strip in front of men and strangers? What about if I went swimming in a neoprene diving suit and swimming cap?

What sort of dictatorship bans women from wearing what they want, unless it’s actually indecent?

She’s not giving up Vicki McLeod

Family Matters MY daughter wanted me to promise that I wouldn’t shout out or make any kind of loud noise when she rode in her first show jumping competition last weekend. I was mortified that she’d think I would embarrass her in anyway (Moi? Mais non!). But I shrugged off the niggly hurt feeling that tickled in the back of my heart, and promised.

She’d been preparing for it for a month, although in reality she’s been working up to it since she started riding at Club Caballisto Son Malero in Calvia three summers ago. Riding a horse is not something that you learn overnight. But she’s practised on many and I feel that she’s a competent rider, as do the examiners who have awarded her the ‘Galopes 4.’

Of course, the first time at anything is difficult.

When you’re only 10 and on top of a horse that you’re about to ride in front of a bunch of strangers in a strange arena in your first competition then you can probably imagine the extra level of pressure. With fingers crossed and lips sealed shut I watched her enter the ring and ride with a determined face towards the first jump.

FIRST COMPETITION: Riding a horse is not something you learn overnight. that he didn’t fancy doing it, and she hadn’t been that insistent about pushing him on, so he took the opportunity to duck out the side rather than jump.

Refusal number one. She turned him around and pointed him at the jump again, oh okay then he accepted it and popped over it. They arrived at

the second jump and he swerved to the side again, whilst she went in the opposite direction and hit the floor, as did my heart. Game over. Two refusals and you’re eliminated.

They left the arena and the competition continued. She was shaken, tearful, and probably a bit frightened, but she was told she had the chance to ride the course again at the end of the competition, as did the other people who had been eliminated. Did she want to do it again?

I doubt that Sophie, her trainer, gave her the option, it was always taken as read that she would. After all of this time, all of the preparation it couldn’t end this way. So back into the arena she went. The announcer asked for her name, she rode over and told him, and he introduced her to the spectators as ‘Georgina Neilson, Valiente’ (Brave). This time, everyone held their breath as she managed to get round with less drama, a tonne of guts and courage, and determination not to give up. A big character building event, and a day to remember forever.

And did I remember to keep my mouth shut?

At the end of the second round I wasn’t the only person shouting and cheering for her, all of the audience were rooting for her as well, and as she managed to get over the last jump we all erupted in applause and ‘Bravos.’ She didn’t seem to mind so much, after all. mallorcamatters.com

Mariano Rajoy: the swot Cassandra Nash A weekly look - and not entirely impartial reaction to the Spanish political scene

ACTING president and Partido Popular le a d e r, Ma r i a n o Ra jo y, is 6 1 w ith a Methuselah streak. His third shot at the presidency paid off in November 2011 wh e n t h e e c o n omic cris is w a s at its worst. The PP’s endemic corruption, which Rajoy barely acknowledges, surfaced on his watch and opponents complain that as the most-voted politician in December and June he regards this as tacit forgiveness.

Rajoy was a swot who sailed through exacting Civil Service exams to become Spain’s youngest-ever Land Registrar at 23. If it all goes pear-shaped he could return to Santa Pola (Alicante), whose Registry he still holds.

The debater ALBERT RIVERA (36), who heads Ciudadanos, said he would rather be useful

than important. Now he is both after offering assistance first to Pedro Sanchez last winter and more recently to Rajoy, demonstrating a usefulness lacking in Spain where politicians have lost the ability to come together in a pact or seek consensus.

An ace debater and champion swimmer at university, Rivera wins plaudits for giving the impression that he is willing to put voters before personal ambition. Inexplicably, Ciudadanos’ share of the vote diminished between December and June but Rivera’s swimming expertise should keep him afloat for some time to come.

The pundit PABLO IGLESIAS, a 37-year-old described as “more Groucho Marx than Karl,” emerged from the 11-M protest movement. Podemos snaffled five seats in the 2014 European elections on the back of pony-tailed Iglesias’ television chat shows but its founders cannot shake off former links to the Venezuelan government.

Last December’s results misled Iglesias into believing that Podemos would do even better in a second election but an alliance with Izquierda Unida, the former Communist Party, did not pay off in June.

The basketball player PEDRO SANCHEZ leads the PSOE socialist party thanks to primaries that were his idea. The 44-year-old is more popular with card-carriers than the party barons, who preferred Andalucia’s regional president Susana Diaz.

Tall, dark and handsome, Sanchez fails to impress, haemorrhages votes, has not used Rajoy’s unpopularity to his advantage and spends too much time watching his own back.

He played for the Los Estudiantes, a basketball team affiliated to Atletico de Madrid, and once considered turning professional. This avenue is probably no longer open should Sanchez seek a career change.

Brexit: post-referendum boom or gloom?

WITH Team GB hauling back all that hardware from Rio, the positive mood sweeping the country is a real shot in the arm. Things do feel better, but it’s far too early to call all those pre-referendum Brexit scare stories fake. We haven’t left the EU yet, and it’ll take years before we know if the downsides materialise or not.

Personally, I hope we see a new refreshed nation, but it’s naive to say everything is rosy at this early stage.

What we have now is a ‘confidence’ blip from the markets, but not even Mystic Meg knows the future impact of quantitative easing, interest rate cuts, exchange rate falls, the FTSE bubble and all the rest of it, let alone the outcome of the exit negotiations and inevitable changes in our trade relationships.

The main challenges are still to come and some gloom will surely occur in the short and medium terms. However, we are where we are. The plan must surely now be how to deal with the future in the best possible way.

This could involve leaving the single market and getting control of borders at one end of the scale, or at the other, a second referendum, legal judgements and a vote in Parliament that Article 50 will never be invoked (as Remainers demand).

My guess is it’ll be something inbetween. What do you think?

FALSE friends, rather than those people who smile to your face and stab you in the back, are words which can trip you up in foreign languages by sounding similar to a word in your own but meaning something completely different.

This can often lead to some rather amusing mistakes a lot of us have either committed while trying to speak Spanish or heard when our neighbours have tried to practise their English with us. These are the 10 that tickled us the most: 1. Embarazado/a This one often catches unsuspecting Brits out in the chemists or at the doctors when they want to mutter to the man in the white coat about an embarrassing problem or complaint and end up confessing to being pregnant. The correct term if you wish to express embarrassment would be to say you are ‘avergonzado/a’.

2. Constipado/a Don’t look so put out when Pedro from next door moans to you that he’s so ‘constipado’ he can’t breathe: he’s actually telling you about his common cold. If you do happen to be a bit, erm, blocked up and need to explain, the word you’re looking for in Spanish is ‘estreñido/a’.

3. Bombero Sadly, due to the ever-increasing amount of fires Spain suffers in the summer, most of us now know that bomberos are firemen. However, if you were shocked by this the first time you heard it, rest assured you wouldn’t have been the first to think the bombers were coming and run for cover.

I DON’T know about you, but I reached a point of total confusion some time ago about what we should and should not eat and drink, how much exercise we should take and a host of other do’s and don’ts that seem to change with the seasons.

I adopted an attitude years ago of: ‘If in doubt think natural.’

Butter or low fat spread?

Have we been scoffing eggs for thousands of years without any noticeable ill effects, or is it only now that higher cholesterol suddenly becomes a problem?

They are natural foods, so I am a lover and an unrepentant consumer of both.

And as long as I go out and do a bit of walking or swimming for an hour or so each day, then you can stuff

ALCOHOL GUIDELINES: Recommend a maximum of 14 units per week. your gym and the discomfort of screaming muscles and protesting joints.

How can that be good for you?

We were told quite recently that a maximum of 14 units of alcohol per

week was the recommendation, but no alcohol at all is ideal. Well there’s nothing ideal about that in my book.

But I would put money on the fact that in the not too distant future some in-

dividual in a white lab coat, worn corduroy trousers and scuffed shoes, will peer over his thick lenses and declare that this is a load of old cobblers, and the new recommendation is...

I am not one of these

conspiracy theorists who reckon that the Americans never landed on the moon, or that aliens have lived among us for years, although when you look at Trump and Clinton, it does make you think.

But I have to say that it appears as if the constant reports of new scientific studies – which always seem to contradict earlier scientific studies – are part of a deliberate plan to mislead, confuse and scare to death the good people of the UK. And apart from any other consideration, who pays for this research? The government? Big pharmaceuticals? Certainly vested interests of one kind or another.

The saying that knowledge is power is true.

Therefore when the perceived knowledge of the day is force fed to us by these so called experts, then that information is also power.

How much more powerful then is mis-information…

Faults discovered with iPhone 6 John Smith Random thoughts...

AFTER years of ‘ruling the mobile phone roost,’ Apple has seen some quite negative reports concerning its latest products and an overall drop in sales.

There seem to be two new serious faults with the iPhone 6, one of which is thought to have been caused by a shadowy Israeli company which has hacked into the programmes running the phones. This allows anyone who knows the secret (which is possibly available at a price) to be able to constantly monitor everything that the phone does.

The problem only came to light when Ahmed Mansoor a human rights supporter who had been imprisoned in the United Arab Emirates received a text message offering him information on abuses in the prisons of that country but it contained a link at the bottom of the message which he did not recognise.

DOUBLE FAULT: Two serious faults have been detected on the iPhone 6.

Being paranoid is sometimes quite useful and he contacted Citizen Lab, a voluntary organisation that tries to investigate matters of concern on the internet and they in turn contacted Lookout a smartphone security company. Both groups agreed that this was a highly sophisticated spyware package and alerted Apple.

Apple have acknowledged this is

a problem and have speedily produced a ‘patch’ to counter the hack and this is available as part of the latest iOS download 9.3.5 which iPhone users can obtain by visiting the iPhone’s settings, clicking general and choosing security update.

In fairness to Apple, this is a very complicated hack which it is suggested is more likely to have been purchased for significant sums by

The world is dangerous AS we go through life doing what we can for ourselves and our families, events such as the floods in the USA and the earthquakes in Italy and Myanmar only go to reinforce the fact that the world is a precarious place. We have to be grateful when we escape these terrible tragedies whilst ensuring that we retain sufficient humanity to care a little for those who suffer.

When you look around the world, there is so much misery and pain, caused by both natural disasters and the actions of man that it is comforting to realise that here in the south of Spain we are largely cocooned against the worst problems that others face.

Certainly very few people can honestly claim to be completely trouble free but so many of the trials that we have to face could be considered trivial compared to those affecting refugee children, those driven from their homes by war and the sadly still inhumane treatment that different castes and colours receive.

• Avoid alcohol: Drinking alcohol before bed can make you go straight into a deep sleep but this means you miss out on the first stage, called rapid eye movement (REM). It is this REM that helps you wake up feeling refreshed. You would normally have six or seven cycles of REM a night, but if you have been drinking you typically have just a few.

HEATSTROKE is the most serious form of heat injury and is considered a medical emergency. It often occurs as a progression from milder heat-related illnesses such as heat cramps, heat syncope (fainting), and heat exhaustion. But it can strike even if you have no previous signs of heat injury.

Heatstroke results from prolonged exposure to high temperatures, usually in combination with dehydration, which leads to failure of the body’s temperature control system.

The medical definition of heatstroke is having a core body temperature greater than 105 degrees Fahrenheit, with complications involving the central nervous system that occur after exposure to high temperatures.

What can I do to avoid heatstroke?

In summer you must take into account that temperatures and sunshine hours increase considerably. You should avoid exposing yourself directly to solar radiation, but if you do you should be properly protected and hydrated, especially when taking part in any form of physical exercise.

What effects can heatstroke have on my health?

Heatstroke can provoke anything from light dehydration and dizziness to serious injuries such as convulsions or cardiac arrest which can certainly put people’s lives in danger.

In the event that someone suffers heatstroke, what should people do?

The first thing that should happen is that someone informs the

emergency services or alternatively takes the victim to the nearest hospital.

Their conscience and pulse must be checked and they should be hydrated by any means possible so as to cool the body down. All these actions must be done as soon as possible.

How long does it take to recover from heatstroke?

If progress is good and the symptoms aren’t serious, the person should recover within a few hours.

What long-term consequences can sun exposure have?

Long-term sun exposure can have very serious consequences, with the appearance of wounds, especially on the skin. If you have the slight suspicion that the wound could be serious, please make an appointment to go and see a dermatologist.

Cheaper treatment with fewer drugs A NEW fertility treatment has been created by Australian and Belgian scientists that could be cheaper and less invasive than IVF. The scientists say the new method, which has already undergone pre-clinical testing, uses growth factors to enhance an existing fertility treatment known as in-vitro maturation (IVM). The results have shown improved egg quality and a 50 per cent

increase in embryos, with a minimal use of drugs.

In the IVM process, eggs are removed from the ovaries when they are immature, the main difference to conventional IVF, and are matured in the lab before being fertilised. This means the woman does not need to take as many drugs before the eggs can be collected compared to IVF. Researchers at the Univer-

sity of New South Wales in Australia, have improved the IVM process by adding a combination of a growth factor and small signalling molecules, to the egg cells in order to boost egg quality.

Researchers in Belgium also believe the new technique could benefit women facing cancer treatment, who wish to preserve their fertility but often don’t have time to freeze their eggs.

Researchers from the University of Edinburgh and the University of Trieste, Italy, studied the DNA of around 3,000 coffee drinkers in the Netherlands and Italy. Participants were asked to complete a survey about how many cups they had each day.

• Macular degeneration: In older people, the macula – the centre of the retina which is used for detailed vision – thins and occasionally bleeds. This can lead to distortion of, or even the loss of, central vision.

The sufferer may also have trouble discerning colours. Peripheral vision remains unaffected, but central vision loss

is serious, so early diagnosis and treatment is vital.

All these problems can be easily diagnosed with an eye test, so Specsavers Opticas urges all people over 70 to make sure they go for an eye test on an annual basis to make sure their eyes are healthy and any problems can be treated before causing vision loss.

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I WAS a smoker... a serious smoker. Not one of your namby pamby social ones. You know the ones who never have their own packet because they only smoke when they’re out having a drink or at a party or dinner with you basically, just always smoking other people’s!

No, I was a SMOKER, 40 a day and I often had one lit and another in the ashtray I’d forgotten about. I was a good smoker. My smoke never annoyed anybody, or so I thought! The smell on my clothes I didn’t notice. But now I don’t smoke at all. Nothing.

Nada. I gave it up and it was very simple.

I don’t recommend my method as it’s a bit drastic! I had two heart attacks and tried to have a ciggy in between which didn’t work. I didn’t have the strength to drag on it. Anyway after five weeks in hospital and a triple bypass I decided not to smoke anymore. No brainer really.

But now I’m one of those non-smokers of the worst kind, so don’t smoke around me full stop. For years that’s been fine because most countries now have strict no smoking

policies. Then all of a sudden people started vaping. If you don’t know what that is, it’s a contraption you stick in your mouth filled with some fluidy oily chemicals, usually from China, which are heated by an element then blown out like a nuclear cloud over the person sitting next to them.

Now, as you know, I’m not one to complain but I don’t give a monkeys about your need to substitute your stinking ciggy habit with this now so called healthier option... don’t blow it over me OK? I don’t want something you have taken down your grubby ex-smoker’s lungs then blown out of your mouth in my face and when I tell you don’t huff and tut OK? It’s not so bad if you have an occasional puff, like once an hour, but if you insist on dragging on it continuously all night and sit there like the Royal Scotsman trying to pull a hundred carriage I’m going to tell you to stop.

Don’t you realise it’s anti-social and rude to be sitting next to someone and blowing this crap all over them? I tried many times to give up smoking. I read so many books about giving up smoking I finally gave up reading!

THERE are often reports of scams of drivers being flagged down to stop by people pretending to be police officers, but how do you actually know if the Guardia Civil want to pull you over?

On their official YouTube channel, the G ua rdia C ivil ha v e publ i shed a video explaining the actions that patrols will take in order to stop a vehicle on the roadside.

The video states that along with their duties, “the Guardia Civil is tasked with controlling road traffic to ensure road safety and to prevent the commission of offences which endanger road users and provide assistance if necessary.”

When an official vehicle wants you to stop it will display flashing red lights

in addition to the blue lights. These red lights mean that you must stop your vehicle by safely manoeuvring to the right hand side of the road.

You must stop your vehicle in a place where it does not cause an increased risk to other road users. If this is not possible, continue driving until you are able stop in a safe place. The police patrol vehicle will then stop behind your car.

All occupants of your vehicle must remain inside the vehicle. The police officer will approach you to notify the reason why you have been stopped.

Once the officers have finished, they will assist you in joining the main flow of traffic and getting back on the road.

Can a ‘club’ be exempted?

WE have 89 apartments in our Community. We have a club/bar in the grounds which is owned by 48 bonded members of the Community. This club has problems making money. The members want the Community to exempt the club from Community fees in exchange for giving non-members the right to use the club. This is a split because not all nonmembers want to use the club. The club say that they cannot afford the fees. My question is: can the club force the Community to exempt them from paying the fees? If they took it to an AGM, do the members vote on that decision? We would like to know if the club has a case or not.

THIS summer EWN readers living on the Spanish Costa’s or in Mallorca are all enjoying that special something different that each region offers home buyers but all regions share one important thing in common, hot sunny days.

With temperatures reaching w e l l o v e r 3 0 ºC t h a t’s around 90ºF, sunglasses, a hat and a cold drink are a daily re q u i r e m e n t i n th e summer, o h ! a n d a d i p in your swimming pool, if you want to stay comfortable.

So, spare a though for our planet, which we now know beyond d o u b t , i s g e t tin g hotter a n d h o t t e r b u t th e good news is that as home-

owners we can all do something positive about it and give our planet the equivalent of a cool drink and the sooner we start the better.

The ice that covers most of the Artic and Greenland is me ltin g at a rate of around 159 billion tons each year, this has caused the sea levels to rise around 15cm to 20cm or six to eight inches over the last 100 years and will continue at a similar or even higher rate unless we cut down on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that our homes and industry create.

F ro m 2 0 0 7 all n e w homes built in Spain have to c o mp ly to h ig h en ergy performance standards, or in other words cut down on the levels of GHG emissions.

As of June 2013 all properties, existing or new, that are offered for sale or rent in Spain are re-

qui r ed t o have an Energy Efficient Certificate, showing your home’s efficiency level, or in other words the level of GHG emissions.

Bel i eve i t or not , t he bui l di ng const r uct i on process and the residential sector contributes to over one third of Spain’s total GHG emissions, so homeowners in Spain have a big part to play in solving the problem.

Resi dent i al hom es have a big potential for cost eff ect i ve energy saving, through effective use of building materials, high-tech products and efficient general daily use.

The EU targets are to reduce GHG emissions by 20 per cent by 2020 and 40 per GOING GREEN: Homeowners have a part to play.

By Matthew Elliott PROPERTY pundits have been concerned that sales of newly built Spanish homes appear to be low, contradicting the notion that a solid recovery is in full swing.

On to the wider sales market, which includes secondhand homes, and the latest fig-

ures from the National Institute of Statistics show strong growth across key regions including the Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol, Murcia, Balearic Islands, and the cosmopolitan centres of Madrid and Barcelona.

The news comes amid revelations that, for the first time in aeons, regular Spaniards are actually better off buying rather than renting a home. At present the typical Spanish mortgage repayment is between €350

and €400 per month for a €100,000 loan, while people renting a property that would fit this mortgage model would expect to pay around €500 each month in rent.

While this is the way it usually was before the crisis, the figures mark the crossing of a significant threshold, one which could lead to an energised boon in sales over the coming months and years as many people realise it’s in their best interests to buy.

A time of change SEPTEMBER is an important time for our gardens, vegetal plots and plants. It marks a change of cycle and requires particular care in some gardening aspects.

While maintaining watering, especially in southern, drier areas, it is time to start weeding and preparing the vegetal garden for the autumn. Remember the debris will make the base of a superb organic compost.

The time is right to plant autumn-winter veg and herbs such as Swiss chard, chicory, garlic, borage, onions, parsnips, endives, peas, beans, lettuce, turnips, parsley, chervil, radishes and carrots.

In the garden it’s a good time to start thinking about planting conifers and evergreens and plant pots and flower beds should be prepared and primed ready to plant autumn bulbs.

This is also the right moment to replant worse for wear areas of lawns and weed and fertilise all over to prepare the grass for the cold weather.

The first in 1942 was started when an unexploded bomb was dug out of our garden. Today’s garden has been stimulated from earlier gardens in England, Holland, Spain and from my world travels.

Remember, great gardens don’t start in garden centres but with creative preplanning and consideration. Where possible involve partners and family in creating and evaluating features

for new and existing gardens.

My last gardening words are now recorded, so on publication day, September 1, I can go off for my early morning walk

By Nick Murgatroyd THERE are several serious diseases which can affect pets and their owners which are spread by biting arthropods (eg mosquitoes, ticks, etc).

These diseases seem to be getting more prevalent.

Why are they becoming more common?

Firstly, there is spread of these diseases in pets from the traditional warm areas of the south to temperate areas in the north of Europe. The reasons for this are multiple: • Increased mobility of pet animals, especially dogs, with their owners travelling through ‘at risk areas’ and back home has resulted in geographic spread in mainland Europe.

find special niches in which to survive almost any weather condition. Add to this the general tendency for temperate areas of Europe to become warmer and wetter, which helps spread the fly and mosquito populations.

Secondly, there are also new arthropod-transmitted diseases being reported which affect humans and their pets, especially in the temperate (nontropical) areas of Europe.

Next week, we’ll take a look at the main diseases to be wary of.

BRITISH designer Dominic Wilcox’s caninecentric art exhibition, created with dogs in mind, ran from August 19-20 in London.

The show was part of a campaign aimed at encouraging people to spend more time with their pets, and included artwork painted in a pooch-friendly colour scheme, plus large interactive pieces such as an enormous dog bowl filled with balls and an ‘open car window simulator’ which involved a fan wafting scents such as meat and old shoes around.

The dogs who attended were said to have approved of the show, with plenty of wagging tails spotted, and their enthusiasm is a credit to the painstaking research that went into the event.

By John Smith FIFTY years ago, a Finnish yacht manufacturer Oy Nautor AB produced the first of the Swan class yachts and in September 2016, 121 different Swans will be racing in the waters of Porto Cervo in Italy as they compete for the Rolex Swan Cup. This, the 19th competition, is being hosted at the beautiful Costa Smeralda Yacht Club and will be a combination of hard sailing, enjoyment of the various

events, the crew party organised by Rolex at the Colonna Resort and perhaps some special samples from sponsors Perrier-Jouer and Leica.

Divided into different classes based on the age of the yachts competing, it is expected that there will be a whole range of yachts, with the first Swan built, the iconic Tarantella racing which has been made ready for the race by some of those who originally produced her in 1966 being put through her paces by an invited crew.

In complete contrast, some of the largest and most recently built Swans will also be competing and for the Swan 45 class there will also be a chance to win the World Championship title.

This is no easy race however as the skippers will have to navigate through some fairly narrow channels with some shallow waters and the odd shipwreck or two before then taking part in a long coastal race which tests both the vessels and the stamina of the crew manning them.

Record attempt from Team Britannia THE Southampton Boat Show will see the launch of an attempt to design and produce the fastest and most fuel efficient semi wave-slicing power boat to circumnavigate the world in a time faster than the current record of 60 days, 23 hours and 49 minutes.

Team Britannia will use a boat that is a completely new design, produced by Professor Bob Cripps in the UK which is being constructed near Portsmouth out of recycled marine grade aluminium. He has designed what he believes will be a highly efficient hull, which will cut fuel consumption by up to 30 per cent, with no loss in performance.

Although it has cost millions of pounds to produce, the living conditions for the crew of 12 including five injured service personnel will

be very basic as there has to be as little weight as possible but sufficient fuel to allow it to travel in seven ‘hops’ each of 3,800 miles before refuelling.

Using clean fuel and with the engines running on a 24hour cycle, the boat will move from Southampton to the Monaco Yacht Show and then onto to Gibraltar for final sea trials. Then on October 23 the stop watch will start as it leaves Gibraltar for the first leg of the journey which will see stops in Puerto Rico, Manzanillo, Honolulu, Guam, Singapore, Oman and Malta to take on fuel.

This innovative vessel will need to pass through the Suez and Panama Canals, cross the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator and return to Gibraltar, hopefully to a hero’s welcome.

CRICKET: • England won the first two One Day internationals against Pakistan by 44 runs and four wickets respectively, in form batsman Joe Root leading the way in both games.

The third encounter took place yesterday, the fourth is tomorrow with the fifth on Sunday. And you can see a T20 blast between the countries next Wednesday.

FOOTBALL: • Last weekend, a record Pirelli Stadium crowd of almost 7,000 saw hosts Burton Albion beat neighbours Derby County 1-0 in the first-ever league meeting between the two clubs.

Kyle Edmund, a 21-year-old South African-born star, who moved to Yorkshire as a three-year-old, is rated No 84 in the world but is widely tipped to take Murray’s mantle once the veteran Scot winds down his career.

Edmund defeated the highly rated 13th seed Richard Gasquet in a smooth straight sets victory and will face American wildcard Ernesto Escobedo in round two.
