Kayak king wins Rio gold

Now the adopted Spanish National has brought home an Olympic gold medal after destroying the field in the K-1 1,000 metres kayaking event in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday, August 16.

Palma noise misery continues unabated

By Gemma Elvins-Quinn RESIDENTS of the Platja de Palma are complaining their problems with noise, drunkenness and dirt have not been eased. This comes after Palma City Council promised to try to resolve the situation and find

solutions to ensure better relations between holidaymakers and residents.

They claim it has been “a year without solutions.” They report the reality is that “morning after morning it is the same story; gangs of people drinking in the street, unbearable noise,

vandalism and fights. It’s difficult for the cleaning services and leads to a deterioration every day of the area’s image.”

Fire crews were forced to intervene on Tuesday in a troubled corner of s’Arenal after several bin containers were set alight. The local

DRONE PATROL: Helping to spot swimmers or boats in trouble as well as trying to combat terrorism.

By Matthew Elliott A QUIET revolution is underway. Its genesis is a curious fusion of Spanish idyllic beach life and the violent cauldron of the Middle East... and the change is set to transform all of our lives.

Only a few years ago the word drone conjured up images of a vast bureaucratic machinery of assassination, pioneered by the Pentagon in distant deserts, designed to remove the ‘enemies’ of the west.

Yet while notorious jihadis (and the occasional family) were being blown to smithereens by video-gaming soldiers in places like Afghanistan and Yemen, Spanish scientists saw the lethal technology as offering a radical opportunity to solve some of the playa’s more pressing problems.

Since January 2015, more than 600 people have drowned in Spanish waters, a startling figure which has largely flown under the radar. Many speak of unpreventable tragedy and personal responsibility, man pitted against the cruel sea.

In Spain a select group of scientists, engineers and public policymakers thought differently. They decided to use drones to protect swimmers,

sailors, and also the environment which is being increasingly ravaged by wild fires and destructive pests.

Across Asturias, Andalucia, Valencia, Murcia and Cantabria the drones were deployed in pioneering schemes, buzzing over beaches, detecting swimmers in distress, boats adrift at sea and investigating ominous plumes of smoke.

Weighing less than two kilos, capable of flying more than 500 metres above sea level at 70kmh, equipped with anti-shock sensors, GPS, 360-degree high-definition cameras, and even biological agents, the drones could reach previously inaccessible areas.

And they furnish the authorities with an unprecedented view of the coastline.

And it has worked. Lives were saved, boats rescued, mosquito colonies eradicated, and wildfires tamed. What’s more, drone ‘pilots’ could be trained quickly and easily, with the aerial apparatus costing far less than dispatching bulky, fuel burning aircraft to the scene.

Yet, as with all technological developments, the grim realities of our times have forced a departure from this idealistic narrative. Today the drones zipping in ever growing numbers over Spanish beaches have a new priority,

combating terrorism.

Frightening and sporadic attacks in France, Belgium and Germany has seen Spain settle warily on a level four terror alert while the country entertains record numbers of tourists flocking to its beaches, seeking a safer alternative to battle scarred Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey.

Today, heavily armed police patrols and quickly evolving drones are fast becoming part and parcel of the traditional Spanish beach scene, with thousands of unsuspecting sunbathers all watched over by these all-seeing machines.

In Benidorm, a drone has been patrolling the local sandy strips since July 1, in a repeat of a pioneering scheme first tried last year, which has now been picked up by other popular resorts, including Torrevieja (Alicante), Marbella and Benalmadena (Malaga), Cartagena (Murcia), Ribadesella (Asturias), and Isla (Cantabria).

Only those scanning the skies intensely will spot them. Under current legislation the drones cannot fly directly over sunbathers but change is in the air and their legal permission for usage in ‘additional security purposes’ is suitably opaque and open to interpretation.

Nor do the authorities have any kind

of monopoly over this aerial revolution. Amazon’s plan to develop a robot delivery army may still be some way off but the online retailer sells them for personal use too, capitalising on a growing movement of ‘drone enthusiasts’.

In Barcelona, professional drone racing has been earmarked for development at the old greyhound racing tracks, while in the UK the number of drone-related offences has quadrupled in recent years.

Stories of peeping toms hovering remotely outside bedroom windows, PIN numbers being recorded at ATMs, and burglars scoping out properties, are rife. Drones have even been used in an attempt to get drugs into prisons.

The Spanish authorities are now using the technology to identify homes in Mallorca with illegally built constructions.

Naturally there are also fears that a terrorist group could quite easily weaponise a commercially bought drone, using it to devastating effect across densely populated areas. This raises the startling prospect of a ‘drone police force’ monitoring the conduct of private devices and even individual citizens and their property. A brave new world indeed…

DRONES should only be used by the government and there should be strict laws limiting their application to helping people and the environment, not spying on properties. We have enough problems with data collection.

People power BEACH safety is a hugely important issue and it just seems to be getting worse and worse, but is this really the answer? We need more public awareness and lifeguards on the beat, a community solution.

SUPPORTERS of rival German football teams clashed in the notorious El Arenal district of the Playa de Palma, leading to the arrest of nine German tourists, considerable property damage, and the evacuation of unfortunate customers and bar staff.

The brawl took place shortly after midnight on Tuesday August 16 and the nine have since been released by National Police after interrogation but could face charges of assault and criminal damage.

Several tourists caught up in the violence were treated for cuts and bruises after a ruckus which reportedly saw 18 b ar s to o ls , tw o tab les , a nd s e ve ra l glass doors destroyed in a scene littered with dozens of smashed bottles.

The 21-year-old’s mum, who works in a hotel, his sister and the president of the Balearic Canoeing Foundation, Juan José de Salabert Coll, were all on hand to watch his final, as he led the field after 250 me-

tres. He then dropped back to fifth between 500 and 750 metres before launching a spectacular comeback in the last quarter of the race.

In the aftermath of his victory, Waltz said it was an “honour” to represent a “great

country” although he was only able to obtain Spanish nationality two years ago due his parents’ divorce.

The Balearic Federation also pulled a few strings with friends in the local courts in order to speed up the process.

Now, having started his kayaking career at the age of 12 with his local club in Porto Petro, he will return from Brazil a national hero after picking up a completely unexpected Olympic gold medal.

Blood donations don’t meet demand

By Gemma Elvins-Quinn PA L M A h a s a c h i e v e d a f i g u r e o f 9 7 0 new blood donors during the first half of 2016. The number is similar to last year.

In total, 11,200 Palma residents volunteered to donate blood during the first six months of the year which subsequently led to 8,500 successful donations.

But according to the deputy director of the Fundació Banc Blood of Baleares, Teresa Jimenez, the numbers are not sufficient to meet demand. This is due to the increase of tourists on the island.

‘Virtual’ kidnapping is a growing concern POLICE in Mallorca have registered several complaints in recent months of ‘virtual kidnappings’ in Palma.

In a typical incident, a person receives a phone call from a stranger who says they have kidnapped a family member. Taking advantage of the anguish and confusion generated by this news, the offender demands an amount of money keeping a person on the phone to prevent you contacting your family member to check.

Since February, Palma has recorded nine such cases and police are warning people to be aware of a scam which aims to obtain a quick amount of money.

Police say most of the calls are from hidden numbers or people using the prefix 0056. They said the caller never uses the person’s name but

will inadvertently get the victim to say it which they then use during the course of the call to give credibility to it.

Police advise people to hang up immediately and call family members. If they do not answer and you are concerned, contact police straight away.

They advise people not to give the caller any form of personal information.

Less than 3 per cent of the healthy population donate blood in the Islands.

Among the prerequisites for donating blood is an age range of 18 to 65 and weighing at least 50 kilos.

ACTING Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was quick to send a telegram to Manacor-born Olympic medal winning tennis player Rafa Nadal to congratulate him on his performance in Rio. Although the local player lost his chance at an individual medal when

Japanese Kei Nishikori beat him for the bronze on Sunday (August 14), Nadal will be bringing home the gold he and Marc Lopez won in the doubles competitions, an achievement Rajoy congratulated him for effusively in his telegram.

“Dearest Rafa, you have made us

all proud, you fought every single ball and I wish to congratulate you and thank you for your fine representation of Spain. You are one of the most important players in history and we all look forward to watching your future victories. Vamos, Rafa!” the PM affectionately wrote.

Giving a dog a home THE Son Reus animal protection shelter celebrates its 40th anniversary this week.

It will mark the occasion at full capacity as they rescue more and more abandoned dogs.

They recover an average of 37 dogs every day although last month this figure reached 41. Not all were

abandoned, some were disorientated and lost.

Owners who have chipped their dogs receive a call from Son Reus and come and collect their pets, as happened with 49 dogs last month, however the centre reports there are still too many without chips.

Welfare, Josep Maria Rigo, said they are working on ‘responsible ownership’ in order to avoid a similar situation to last year when nearly 2,000 dogs entered the municipal facilities.

Rigo said: “We must educate and raise awareness with all kinds of activities and campaigns particularly for children as they are like sponges and can pass on the message to the rest of the family. It is the most effective, but it takes time.”

The Son Reus shelter already operates an initiative to promote responsible pet ownership and to prevent dogs being abandoned when the family gets bored of them. Pedro Morell, Director of Son Reus, said many

times a child will pester their parents wanting a dog but then get fed up with them: “Adoption is a decision to be taken as a family, so before they make a commitment, they have the possibility to get used to the obligations of having a dog by coming here regularly to walk it and know what they have to do.”

He added: “We ask them to come a minimum of three Saturdays in a row, so parents can teach them that having a pet is a responsibility, not a toy, and they must commit to its care.”

The shelter promotes adoption and last week had 161 dogs and cats up for adoption. These can be viewed via Adopta.palma.cat.

Out of this world AROUND 70 people took part in an introductory star gazing course at the Astronomical Observatory of Mallorca.

The planets, satellites, stars, constellations and galaxies were just some of the topics touched on as people got the chance to see the Cosmos from such advanced telescopes.

For many it was the first time they’d been able to see them ‘close up’.

The Observatory said the number of participants was the highest ever and they have pledged to offer more short courses throughout the year on a range of themes.

Duck throwing race

By John Smith THE annual duck throwing race and competition which has been running for some 80 years, took place in Can Picafort on August 15.

More than 3,000 people attended to swim out to a number

of ducks placed in the sea by local boats. The winner was the first to make it back to the shore by the Hotel Mar y Paz, duck in hand.

For many years, live ducks were used and some locals still regret the practice ended with their replacement by rubber ducks, thanks to the intervention of animal rights activists.

This year

saw a slight twist as there were four live ducks shown to the crowd but none were actually used in the race.

Following the excitement of the race, which attracted a large number of youngsters, some of whom arrived with special nets in which to catch the ducks, there was an evening mass, local folk dancing and a midnight firework display.

The great tourist divide

By Gemma Elvins-Quinn IT has long been the great summer divide. As the population on Mallorca swells in the summer, there are those in support and those against the influx.

The saturation of the island is generating a debate among the population: there are those who argue that it is necessary that the tourists come to provide jobs and income, whilst others argue the numbers should be limited.

“This year is terrible” said one woman who works for a tour operator, “You want to relax at the weekend but you cannot enjoy a moment of relaxation by the sea. There are also a lot of rude people who do not respect the issue of cleanliness of Mallorca.”

However, another woman, a housewife argues: “The more tourists come to the island, the more work that is generated, that’s good.

While you should always comply with rules, I don’t think you can put a ceiling on the number of visitors.”

One of the main issues for

residents is that of transport with roads busier and problems with parking in cities and at the beaches. But equally, others accept it is

mostly for just a few months of the year.

Whatever the views, residents appreciate they will struggle to find a solution.

THE Balearics increased spending on health by 10.3 per cent last year. The spending equates to €1,193 per capita, slightly below the national average of €1,232.

The Basque Country spent €1,584 per capita on health in 2015 while Andalucia spent the least at €2,007.

The figures are from the Economic and Social Council and its socioeconomic and labour report, which al-

so noted that last year the average health expenditure per capita increased by 1.82 per cent on average in Spain, with an expected increase of 3.8 per cent for 2016.

The CES said there is no direct relationship between spending per capita and quality of service, as factors such as the average age of the population or dispersion of the population increase the average budget per person.

Limited access almost halves traffic flow SINCE new traffic regulations came into force in Palma limiting city access via Antoni Maura, the civil authorities have reported the number of cars circulating the Plaza de la Reina has been almost halved.

The measure prohibits the move from Avenida Adolfo Suarez to Antoni Maura except for motorcycles, bicycles and residents. Statistics collected by the Department of Mobility in Palma, showed that tourists, both domestic and for-

eign, are the main violators of the ban on turning into Antoni Maura with 66 per cent of them living outside of Mallorca.

To the resident offenders, Palma City Council has sent newsletters to people living on the is-

land (about 4,500 notices in total) to inform them that they cannot enter the centre of Palma from Avenida Antoni Mau and from August 22, all drivers caught ignoring the new regulations will be fined 90 euros.

Prevention campaign A NEW AIDS prevention campaign has been launched urging people to get tested.

Promoted by ALAS, the AIDS Association of the Balearic Islands, it aims to promote prevention and early diagnosis of HIV in the general population as well as within specific groups.

The project consists of performing rapid tests at the headquarters of ALAS, by making an appointment anonymously and confidentially and users do not require a health card.

ALAS will also provide its

counselling and emotional support services throughout the entire process.

ALAS said testing for HIV is critical so the diagnosed person can quickly access the control and treatment of the condition, increase their quality of life and avoid new infections.

The campaign has received support from the Ministry of Health of the Government through a grant of 10,000 euros.

In Baleares, between 2003 and 2015 2,988 new cases of HIV infection were diagnosed and of these 1,679 were in Mallorca.

More places for the elderly

AIDS AWARENESS: Confidential testing available.

THE Queen Sofia Residencia in Muro has grown from 12 public places for elderly residents to 20, funded by the Department of Social Services and Cooperation at a cost of 401,780 euros.

The Regional Minister of Social Services and Cooperation, Fina Santiago, visited the centre and has promised to study and evaluate the feasibility of creating a day centre for the elderly within the building.

As well as the Reina SofĂ­a Residencia de Muro, increased residential places for dependent people in towns like Arta, Santa Maria and AlcĂşdia have also been created.

Euro is reactive and not proactive Commentary by Moneycorp

EUR weekly currency update CONTINENTAL Europe in August is not a happening place. Politicians, business people and investors are more inclined to spend the month relaxing than making major decisions or doing big deals. That makes for a reactive, not a proactive euro and so it was over the last seven days. The single currency was unchanged against the US dollar at $1.1142 and minutely lower against the Swiss franc. Euroland ecostats were mostly alright, the exception being an unexpected -0.8% monthly fall in French industrial production.

Sterling could have done with a break but it’s not had one yet. Early in the week it was hit by an article in The Times, penned by MPC member Ian McCafferty, which reinforced the idea near-zero interest rates and extended quantitative easing are on the way. The pound was the weakest performer losing 1.5 euro cents.

USD weekly currency update Against the euro the US dollar started well and finished badly. Last Friday’s employment

report was strong, with nonfarm payrolls rising by 255k in July. It wasn’t up to June’s standard of 292k but investors thought at the time it would put a 2016 interest rate increase back on the table. It still might but, with no followthrough from US ecostats, optimism has faded.

It’s suspected the Federal Reserve won’t make a decision now until after the November election.

Sterling had another rough week after MPC member Ian McCafferty wrote a piece for The Times reinforcing the Bank of England governor’s threat of lower interest rates and increased quantitative easing before year-end. The pound lost more than 1.5 US cents and against the euro the dollar was unchanged at $1.11.42.

CAD weekly currency update A broadly positive week for commodity-related currencies with oil prices nearly 5% higher and a downward tilt to global interest rates, investors were in an upbeat mood and the Loonie reaped some of the benefit. It dipped last Friday when a strong US employment report coincided

AUD weekly currency update Lower interest rates mean different things to different currencies. Since the Reserve Bank of Australia lowered its Cash Rate from 1.75% to 1.5% 10 days ago the Aussie has strengthened by 3% against sterling and by 1% against the US dollar. As with the NZ dollar (whose benchmark rate went down from 2.25% to 2% this week), the return is still highly attractive in a world of near-zero and falling yields. The few Australian economic statistics didn’t add much to the debate: for the moment yield is everything and the antipodeans have it in trumps.

Sterling, meanwhile, faded further after last week’s cut by the Bank of England and a Times article that drove home the expectation of nearzero rates by year-end. The Aussie rose a net quarter of a US cent on the week and added nearly three cents against sterling.

Garden gates to open to public THE gardens of Marivent Palace in Palma will be opened up for public visits in February 2017, Regional Government Deputy and Tourism Councillor Biel Barcelo announced on Tuesday (August 16).

The project to prepare the gardens for visits will cost 385,000 euros and take three months to carry out, and the annual running costs amount to 100,000 euros to cover CCTV cameras, security and cleaning staff.

Visits will be free of charge with the gardens open to the public from 9am to 5.30pm in the winter and 9am to 8pm in the summer, however they will remain closed for two weeks at Easter and between July15 and September 15.

Dodgy date distributors are detained TWO people have been arrested in Inca suspected of various offences against public health, workers’ rights and fraud for selling food and drink past their best by dates.

After hearing that a distributor was selling dodgy goods, the Guardia Civil inspected the premises, which delivered to many clients including restaurants across Mallorca.

Officers found that the out of date products, in some cases

years old, was camouflaged amongst other, correctly dated items, after workers had removed the labels and dates and replaced them with new ones.

Health inspectors closed the warehouse down, while the police arrested the people believed to be responsible, who will be charged with fraud, endangering public health and an offence against workers’ rights. Investigations continue and further arrests have not been ruled out.

PRICEY PALMA: The second most expensive city in Spain for an overnight stay.

Expensive choice for stay

By Gemma Elvins-Quinn PALMA is the second most expensive city for an overnight stay in Spain, where the average price per room is around 188 euros.

It is the second highest behind San Sebastian, according to a study from The Hotel Price Index (THPI) by Trivago.es which has an average rate

of 201 euros per night.

The Balearic Islands have increased their average price by 11 per cent in the last year according to the report. The average price for a night in a hotel in Mallorca now stands at 196 euros.

Nationally, hotel prices have risen 4 per cent in August compared with the same month last year and 4.8 per

cent more than in July, with an average cost of 132 euros per night.

Spain’s prices are above the average for Europe which is 120 euros according to THPI which found Monaco is the most expensive city to spend one night in August at 384 euros on average. On the other hand, Romania is the cheapest place to spend a night costing 59 euros.

VIP yachts in bay THE ‘Al Mirqab’ yacht, owned by the Qatari royal f am i l y, ar r i ved t hi s week in the Bay of Palma. It is an impressive yacht, at more than 133 metres in length and has spent several seasons at the Club de Mar. It was built in Germany for Jassim bin Hamad bin Jaber Al Thani. The ship has a helicopter pad, an indoor pool and a cinema.

This is a ship of 72 metres in length built in Italy. The boat was designed for the constructor Francisco Hernando, better known as ‘El Pocero,’ but was sold in 2010 to its current owner.

Electrified eagles expire

By Matt Ford TWO eagles have died as the result of a poorly-insulated buttress on an electricity pylon in Mallorca, one of which was a rare Bonelli’s eagle, Aquila fasciata, originally released as part of an EU-funded LIFE project in 2015.

Three individuals of the same species were k ille d in th e s a me are a in 2 0 1 2 an d 2013, leading to the local council improving insulation on all buttresses and transformers, but it appears that at least one was not sufficiently bolstered.

Bonelli’s is one of Europe’s rarest eagle species, with the most recent estimates suggesting that around 1,000 pairs remain, of which at least 75 per cent reside in Spain.

Altogether there were 27,583 flights in or out of Son Sant Joan this July, the majorit y of t hem com i ng f r om or travelling to other countries.

While the number of passengers from other parts of Spain increased by just 1.3 per cent compared to last year, with a total of 596,269, international visitors made up the rest. The brunt of the visitors came from Germany, 1.28 million, while the UK maintained its second place on the list with 897,761 passengers.

Looking at the figures for the year so far, the Palma de Mallorca airport has seen 14.56 million passengers pass through its facilities, 11.6 per cent more than between January and July last year.

Dirty dogs at it again

PROBLEM POOCHES: Unrestrained dogs causing issues at the park.

DOG parks are causing problems in Palma as owners appear not to be taking any notice of the times which they are supposedly allowed to bring their animals for exercise and to do their business.

Residents near the Son Dameto d’Alt park in the district of Son Rapinya have complained to the city council that unre-

strained animals appear to be brought to the park at any time of day although owners are only supposed to have access from 8am to 10am and 8pm to 10pm.

It is alleged that owners are not clearing up after the dogs and not only is there often excrement left at the children’s playground but dogs allowed

Black henna is obtained by adding to natural henna other colourants, such as p-phenylenediamine, or PPD. It is a chemical substance widely used in permanent hair dyes and can be found in temporary tattoos, printing inks and textile dyes, but it is banned for use directly on the skin, as it can trigger severe allergic skin reactions. Those who have reactions can also be permanently sensitised so that future contact with this substance may trigger further allergic reactions.

Fines up THE traffic police are issuing more than 385 fines per day on the roads of the Balearics, and more than eight fines per day are for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the Guardia Civil has reported.

In fact, over the first six months of this year, the police force issued drivers with 70,160 fines.

The majority of these were for speeding although the number of people failing to wear seatbelts or use child seats, driving uninsured vehicles and driving under the influence also increased compared to the first half of last year, when the total number of fines handed out was 58,841.

More untied than tied NOTARIES in the Balearics have married 27 couples and dealt with 105 divorces since the government approved the Voluntary Jurisdiction Law a year ago which allows public notaries to carry out certain duties to take weight off the courts.

While there are no restrictions on weddings, notaries may only deal with divorces of couples who have been married more than three months, mutually agree to the divorce and have no children.

The statistics, provided by the General Council of Notaries, were similar to those registered in other Spanish regions.

Another bird hits aircraft HAVING taken off at 6.17am on August 11 from Glasgow, en route for Mallorca, Thomas Cook Airlines flight TCX47MG had to make an emergency landing at Manchester airport at 6.45am after a bird was sucked into one of the engines of the Airbus A321.

There were no casualties and the landing was made safely in order to ensure that no d a m a g e h a d b ee n caused to the aircraft and passengers were transferred to a different aircraft in order to continue their journey.

DIVERTED FLIGHT: The Airbus was en route to Mallorca when a bird was sucked into one of the engines.

Alleged dog killer arrested A MAN in the Es Mercadal area has been accused of allegedly killing two dogs by hanging them and then hiding their bodies on his farm.

The investigations began after a hunter reported that his two dogs had disappeared. Seprona, the Nature Protection Branch of the Guardia Civil, was tasked with looking into the incident.

The police reconstruction of the events indicated that the dogs had got lost on a trail and ul-

timately ended up on the grounds of another farm.

It was there that the accused allegedly trapped the animals, hanged them, and then put them in a sack and hid them away in an isolated area amongst some brambles.

The investigations of Seprona eventually led them to the scene of the crime, where the officers discovered the two bodies, and were able to determine the cause of death.

Extension announced PALMA Council has announced it will be extending the seafront promenade in the Molinar district following the Port Authority’s rejection of a project to extend the area’s boating club.

Town Planning Councillor Joan Riera reported the extension will be done in two stages.

First the area will be closed to traffic, apart from residents’ access to parking, in close collaboration with the Transport and Mobility department.

Then, once the authorities are sure this has been accepted smoothly and there are funds available, the second stage of the project will see construction to link the two existing stretches of promenade.

By Adele Land A NUMBER of towns in the Almanzora valley and the Levante area are participating in a drive to increase the awareness of glass recycling.

In collaboration with Ecovidrio, the ‘summer 2016’ drive focuses on the hospitality industry to improve its figures on the recycling of glass items during the busy summer season.

Summer is a crucial time for recycling with an increase in tourism leading to a rise in the use of glass containers. In 2015, some 196,000 tonnes of glass were recycled throughout Spain.

Ecovidrio is responsible for managing Spain’s glass waste.

Founded in 1995, the company works towards achieving EU directives and has an extensive programme of raising social awareness throughout the country.

The CEO of the South African company, Markus Jooste, explained that they had upped their offer in order to “bring certainty to the transaction.”

From a point of view of investors, this offer if agreed by shareholders will see a very attractive premium over pre-offer share value which has been boosted by more than 40 per cent.

Clucked off CONSUMER groups in the USA have delivered a petition to Yum Brands, the owners of Kentucky Fried Chicken which has been signed by 350,000 people demanding it only sells chickens that are not fed with antibiotics.

Whilst the chain does not allow suppliers to use antibiotics in order to promote growth in the chicken they supply, it does not currently object to the use of these drugs to prevent illness.

Competitors McDonald’s recently announced that it now uses antibioticfree chickens in the US and Canada.

A number of economies in decline

By John Smith PUTTING to one side the pros and cons of the Brexit decision as the die is cast, whatever happens in the future, Britain needs to be in a position to export its goods and to trade with the powerhouse economies as well as those ex-colonies which Brexiteers said were queuing up to renew trading arrangements such as Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

Even assuming that this is a fact rather than a wish, their economies are relatively small and do not offer the same opportunities as areas such as China and Germany but those two major markets are themselves not in a particularly strong position at the moment.

The Hinkley Point hesitation has given the Chinese the opportunity to wave a big stick at Britain, implying that this sort of delay by the new Government could hurt future trading arrangements between the two countries, but this could be an example of face saving as China is without doubt continuing to experience financial difficulty with both industrial output and retail sales falling below expectation.

and causing some concern for the authorities there and as the economy is streamlined so there have been a number of job losses which would have been unthinkable a few years ago.

Germany is also seeing a slow-down in growth although it is in keeping with forecasts for the entire European Union which is a little worrying as Germany is normally the bellwether of Europe rather than one of the sheep.

According to certain economists, Germany must not be diverted or affected by the Brexit vote but should continue to invest in industrial growth in order to ensure that the economy prospers rather than shrinks.

These ‘wise men’ argue that whilst the Eurozone struggles with meeting financial targets which are being missed by countries such as Portugal and Spain and Italy is awash with bad debts, Germany needs to be alert to the fact that the British economy will suffer for a while which will mean that car exports as well as those in the pharmaceutical industry will slow down.

Nowadays, so many economies are intertwined and depend on the health of other countries over which they have no direct influence that it has become increasingly more difficult to accurately forecast the future health of an individual country.

Facebook fights to continue free service

By John Smith IT is undeniable that in today’s society, social media is king and huge numbers of people not only have Facebook accounts but spend hours on that particular site seeing what their friends are up to, swapping information, spotting the latest trends and watching amusing videos of family, pets and events.

The good thing about Facebook and similar sites is that they are free, but they haven’t become multi-billion dollar operations without keeping a close eye on income streams and almost all of their money comes from paid for advertising, some of which is quite blatant, whilst others are more insidious.

Only this week, a number of celebrities and businesses have been warned not to promote products that they have been paid to promote on social media without making it clear that that is the case and even with films and television paid product placement is recognised and accepted.

One company, Adblock Plus has targeted Facebook and offers software that can block adverts from appearing on the pages of Facebook users and

there is almost a daily duel with Adblock Plus posting new software and Facebook countering it.

The Facebook corporation argues that their current nemesis is not just blocking adverts but is also stopping genuine posts. “We’re disappointed that ad blocking companies are punishing people on Facebook as these new attempts don’t just block ads but also posts from friends and Pages,” the company said in a statement.

“Adblockers are a blunt instrument, which is why we’ve instead focused on building tools like ad preferences to put control in people’s hands.”

Whilst many will support the fact that a company is prepared to fight the mighty Facebook in order to assist members so that they don’t have to be pestered by adverts, it turns out that this is not an action done solely in the interest of the public at large in a ‘David v Goliath’ battle but it is part of a financial strategy as Adblock Plus will happily unblock advertisers provided that it is paid to do so.

Facebook are understandably unhappy about this and would rather fight the newcomers than pay them to keep away.

EU Commission excuse fines

EU COMMISSIONER: Valdis Dombrovskis said effective action is necessary.

By John Smith ON August 9 the European Commission tweeted ‘Following our recommendations, EU finance ministers cancel fines for Spain and Portugal. We welcome this decision.’

It confirmed the two countries had escaped significant fines for the way in which their finances have been managed.

Very simply, EU rules require that no member of the Union should run an annual deficit in excess of 3 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP), although only those countries who are members of the Eurozone can be fined for breaching this.

In the case of Spain, its excess was a whopping 5.1 per cent and Portugal was close behind at 4.4 per cent and the originally proposed fines would have been the first ever to be levied since the Eurozone was created but on this occasion, the EU quoted ‘exceptional circumstances’ for the decision to suspend the fines.

Portugal has been given until the end of 2016 to get its house in order and reduce its deficit to 2.5 per cent and Spain has been given a little longer with the expectation that it will reduce to 4.6 per cent by the end of 2016, 3.1 per cent by the end of 2017 and 2.2 per cent by the end of 2018, whilst both must give a detailed explanation of how they will achieve this by October of this year.

There is a general dichotomy of opinion on the decision as some argue that it is pointless to fine a country thus worsening its financial situation whilst others argue that it completely devalues the rules of the organisation if they are not imposed.

France was in a similar position last year when it also had a potential fine waived.

One argument is that the Commission fears that with the British referendum result and general discontent with many of the activities of the Union, cancelling the fines means there will be less negative comment from the two nations, but as

they both receive more funds than they put into the EU, it hardly seems that their own exit would be imminent regardless of the decision.

“The EU finance ministers decided to cancel financial fines for Spain and Portugal. They also confirmed the new budgetary adjustment paths for both countries. Effective action by Spain and Portugal will be a necessary condition to lift the suspension of commitments under the European Structural and Investment Funds,” said EU commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis.

Economic financial affairs commissioner Pierre Moscovici said: “I trust that Spain and Portugal will respond accordingly to the collective decisions by the Commission and the Council.”

Whilst Spain still continues to search for a government, this is at least one less worry for the interim government for the time being, although the problem will not simply go away and will have to be addressed in the coming years.

OTHERS THINK IT THIS week I found myself in ‘heavy discussion’ with my Irish nearest and dearests. One of them asked if I liked the Mrs. Brown’s Boys TV comedy series.

To their apparent surprise, I told them I didn’t. “Why not?” they enquired, somewhat incredulously. “He’s a wonderful comedian and is so generous with his work and donations to charities.”

“I’m sure he is,” I replied. “It’s the constant tirade of swearing I can’t abide.”

“Ah, don’t be ridiculous,” they chorused. “He does so much of it that you soon get used to it.” And that statement,

to me, summed up the whole problem.

As standards in the media deteriorate, particularly on television, the more we accept.

We do in fact ‘get used to it!’ Well I don’t want to ‘get used to it’. I don’t want my front room bombarded with depravity and obscenities. “You can always switch off,” I hear the modern ‘incrowd’ sneering derisively. Well I’ll tell you, with the depths to which television has now fallen, that can be increasingly difficult. These days it’s almost impossible to watch even the most innocuous of programmes without some, craw sticking expletive deletive.

And this week, to top it all we had a leading member of the bench call the accused a c….! Admittedly the low life in the dock used the same insult to the judge immediately prior, but really…

With monotonous predictability, a thousand tweeted and twittered how wonderful she was, having told this mo-

ron exactly what she thought of him. Ok, that’s all very well, but this is a high court judge; a member of our society who should be able to control their emotions impeccably yet still thousands praised her remarks.

And do you know why? Because we’ve ‘gotten used to it’. A JERSEY headmaster cancelled his school’s annual day-trip to the beach this summer in case his students got skin cancer. This comes amid new health warnings that the Channel Island of Jersey is fast becoming the world’s top hotspot for malignant melanoma.

Before the ‘elf ‘n’ safety’ mob start, wasn’t this surely an opportunity to teach students how to enjoy the sun and sea safely? What’s wrong with taking a few sensible precautions in case it’s a sunny day: like asking parents to send their kids to school with a hat, suncream and bottled water?

Otherwise that’s like me saying: “I’m not sending my children to school, in case they get bullied, in case they do badly in their exams, or in case their teacher is a complete ****.”

Going now, I need to ask my cat if she prefers Aldi or Lidl litter in her tray. I don’t want the Spanish equivalent of the RSPCA prosecuting me for feline discrimination by not giving her a choice...

Referendum: democratic deficit DOES Ron from Mallorca really believe that the referendum result was democratic? A democratic vote means that all people affected should be allowed a vote. I’m sure I don’t have to point out just how many people affected were not allowed a vote. It has been well publicised. And no, I won’t get over it, Ron, having paid into UK coffers for over 50 years as have a good many other expats including my husband.

Dangerous minds

We had Muslim stokers working in the stoke hold, they would go into the galley after I’d cleaned up for the day and cook themselves something, leaving behind a terrible mess. I would have to get up extra early at 5am to clean up before I could start my day’s chores. The cook suggested I put bacon rashers over the door and on the door handle so I followed his advice, that soon stopped them and I got my full night’s sleep!

HE is always complaining about the foreign immigrants into his own country, that they do not bother to speak the language, and many sponge off of the state and do not pay their fair share of tax.

But he too is an immigrant and has lived in his adopted country for about 10 years, but apart from perhaps managing to say please and thank you, also doesn’t speak the language. But luckily he does not need to since he only mixes with other immigrants from his own country and culture and, anyway, his seven-year-old child can speak the language.

He does get very upset at times and often complains that many of the businesses, services and organisations are not the same as the country from which he came. This, especially, when he has to go to see a doctor who cannot understand him and he cannot understand the doctor. Surely the doctor should speak his language?

He certainly does not like to be called an immigrant, how distasteful.

He is not an immigrant, he is an expat. That sounds much better.

Still, he does like the sun and the sea of the Costa del Sol, so manages to put up with all the other annoying facets of Spain.

I AM puzzled and amazed by the words used in your article about the temporary medical centre in Javea... “half of the playground was taken to build the medical centre with the loss of the football pitch and table tennis area”...well, I pass this area twice a day and, no way has half the area been used, not even quarter and the children are still playing football, basketball and the two table tennis tables are still there, moved a little sideways but still available although seldom actually used.

Personally, I was delighted to see this building and very much hope it could become permanent as there are many elderly people in the area who find the journey to the Port or the Pueblo quite difficult.

Surely life is all about compromise and sharing and I feel this is a somewhat selfish attitude being expressed here by one group. I accept they painted the walls and arranged for provision of football nets, tennis tables, basketball hoops, etc. and tidied up the area...I am in no way diminishing the effort put in here and I applauded it at the time. Previously there was a temporary school building there and the surface was already concreted and even.

We all have to live together and learn to share facilities and arrange things for the best interests of the whole community.

Expatriate elections AS we have now read there will be no ‘vote for life’ for 15-year plus expatriates as promised by David Cameron in his 2015 manifesto, the same one in which he regretfully promised the Brexit referendum. The reason given that it would be too difficult to put into practice.

WHY are so many older people in Engla n d , the ve ry one s w ho w ould ha ve clearer memories of the war against N az i domina tion, s o be w itc he d by those who had sympathy with that ideology?

Statistics show that their preferred newspaper is the Daily Mail, whose owners, the Rothermeres, were friends and supporters of Hitler in the 1930s.

Also, plus 65s are more likely to support UKIP, whose leader Nigel Farage was known in his younger days to be a troublemaker and National Front supporter.

I suggest we lobby Mrs May and both Houses to create a constituency and MP purely for expats. This MP would then represent our interests.

around the main square in Torremolinos, I feel the police and local council are missing a far louder problem that has been going on for years. I talk of the motorbike that rules the decibel charts and has been number one for ages. I live on the main road which runs through Benalmadena Costa which sometimes feels like I am sleeping next to the Isle of Man TT circuit, with unprecedented levels of noise created by motorbikes and larger scooters.

It is not something that is confined to late night but a genuine very loud assault on people’s ears at anytime.

Why do the police allow this noise to continue when the number of fines issued would probably clear the out-

standing debts to the EU? Naturally I am making the assumption that there are laws preventing this volume and can certainly see why Spanish people are voted one of the loudest races on Earth, as they have to speak up to be heard.

Just like that Family Matters AS we walk along the quay towards the boatyard we pass beside rows of restaurants serving Mediterranean specialities. We can hear snippets of different conversations in many languages, along with more I’m not so familiar with. Happy people having a beautiful time. Waiters moving at full tilt. It’s busy, busy. This is Port Adriano, the super-luxury super-yacht harbour on our island.

A key element to the increasing popularity of the Port has to be its events plan. This year alone they’ve brought Gloria Gaynor, The Orchestra, Omara Portuondo, Diego ‘El Cigala,’ 2 Cellos and now the magician Jorge Blass who we are on our way to see.

We wind around the restaurants, gaze at the squillion euro boats and briefly pause at the ice cream stand, just to check of course.

Then Jorge calls up a little girl who charmingly sits on a high chair swinging her ankles whilst Jorge does a conjuring trick with paper and money. His sleight of hand is astonishing as he pulls first a 50 then a 500 euro note out of the torn up page of a show programme. He promises the little girl that if she puts the programme for the Port Adriano events under her pillow in the morning she will find a €5 note. My daughter looks expectantly at me and then carefully puts her own programme in her pocket. I try to remember if I have a €5 note in my wallet for later. The show ends as it begins with a good dollop of glamour and glitter, razzmatazz, flair and showmanship. It’s fitting for the Port Adriano team as everything they have done this year has been top quality. Congratulations to them, I can’t wait to see who you will bring to the island next year.

I DON’T know why I bother doing the Euro Millions lottery, although I refuse to participate every week, and certainly not immediately after it has been won. I mean, hey, what can you buy for €15 million these days?

No, I prefer to wait until the jackpot has built up to a sufficient level to make it worthwhile getting in the car and making the three kilometre trip to my closest lottery outlet. And that’s another thing, why can’t I simply walk to the nearest shop to buy my tickets as I did in the UK? But I repeat, why bother, because it’s a foregone conclusion that I will never win a life changing amount of dosh. Sure I have collected a few euros here and there like most people, but

You chose a picture of a movie star from a selection on a big screen and the one that the flickering light stopped on was the winner... I won three times with Betty Grable alone. ‘lucky’ just does not figure in my CV. I won three times with Betty Grable alone, the first Hollywood actress to insure her legs for $1 million.

Later in life I became a confirmed leg man where the ladies were concerned.

It could be just coincidence, but I doubt it. Then it all changed and my luck switched from positive to negative.

The low point was during one after show party at the end of our Panto run when, traditionally, our own ‘Dafta Awards’ were handed out.

On this particular occasion I was short listed for ‘best legs’ with the other nominees who were: Principal Boy (a girl); Principal Girl (a girl) and The Table (a table) in scene three.

I came fourth!

THINGS change so quickly in the modern world that it is sometimes difficult to be absolutely certain as to where the loyalty of different countries lies and their positions can change dramatically, almost at the drop of a hat.

For years the European Union has flirted with Turkey offering the promise of EU membership which would allow Turkish citizens free passage throughout Europe in return for it being a potential new market.

It has a large land mass straddling two continents and for many, blocking the irresistible march of Islamic fundamentalism.

As the number of refugees from Syria grew to flood proportions, with Turkey being not only a gigantic refugee camp but also a conduit for refugees smuggling themselves

Protect your passport ALTHOUGH it appears, following the result of the referendum, a number of British passport holders (many of them long-time residents in Spain) have been looking at ways of retaining EU nationality - thanks to Irish ancestors, displaced German Jewish family and residency rights there is no question that many people still see a British passport as a valuable commodity.

It’s for that reason, and the fact so many British holidaymakers are travelling the world, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has issued timely advice about safeguarding your passport.

It’s being shared by the British Embassy in Madrid through newspapers such as Euro Weekly News which has a large readership amongst those living here and visitors.

According to the FCO, more than 5,000 passports were lost in Spain in 2015 meaning potentially 5,000 people are travelling throughout Europe or further afield using one of those stolen British passports.

Apart from the potential identity fraud and sheer inconvenience of visiting an Embassy or Consulate to prove your right to receive a temporary travel document, there’s also a significant cost involved as the British government ensures charges are in accordance with the cost of administering the activity.

The travel document costs £100 (€120) and a new passport, only available from the passport office in the UK, can cost between £72.50 (€87) and £103 (€122) and may involve an interview at a passport office depending on how quickly you need it. So follow FCO advice to ensure you’re not caught out.

In the meantime, Turkey had fallen out with Russia following the shooting down of a Russian aircraft that was patrolling in Syria and it looked as if the two nations could themselves be in a state of potential armed aggression.

Then, of course, came the attempted coup in Turkey which some believe was backed, if not inspired by the USA. With a new cold war and the Islamic concept of ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend’, there has been a marked détente between Turkey and Russia which may bode ill for the future.

It certainly looks as if the EU will attempt to act diplomatically against Turkey in the event that the government there brings back the death penalty for those who rebelled against it.

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I HAVE noticed a lot of people, especially British males, who seem to be getting dressed in the dark. I know it’s August and I know it’s hot but you are hurting my eyes! Where do I start? Cor, the list is endless. Ok here we go!

You can’t wear checked shorts and a checked or striped shirt. The rule is simple. If you’re wearing striped or checked shirts you may only wear plain shorts and vice versa.

Unless your house is burning down and the only thing you can throw on are both checked, as soon as you and the family are safe ditch the shirt. Socks with sandals are an offence punishable by an on the spot fine. If you’re not built like an Olympic weightlifter you may not wear sleeveless vests, especially with a beer gut, just to show misspelt tattoos.

On the subject of tattoos, ladies over a certain age should not have them full stop. And if you had them done when you were younger, don’t you wish you hadn’t?

Gents, are you an Olympic diver? If you had to think about that then the answer is no.

Therefore, under no circumstances, are you

allowed to wear speedos on the beach. Ok? I must say this applies mainly to older Scandinavian men. They look ridiculous and not only can people see what sex you are, we can also tell your religion! Not pretty!

A phrase you’re never ever going to hear is “Wow don’t those three-quarter length trousers look amazing with those crocs? Has Vogue been onto you about doing next month’s cover?” Crocs may only be worn by hospital theatre staff in green scrubs and masks. And there’s a good reason for the masks, they don’t want to be recognised out in the street as croc wearers.

And what’s the British obsession with wearing football shirts? If you’re going out for a family meal put a decent shirt on please and junior doesn’t need one either, unless, of course, you’re going to watch or play footy.

Have a look at how the Spanish dress their kids. Amazing, and a lot to be learnt there.

I’m not going to write anything about the ladies because I’m a gentleman but please just note; if you can see your undies every time you move your dress or skirt may just be too short and a shade tight. I mentioned tattoos before and that reminded me of a young lady on the beach. I noticed she had a big lettuce leaf tattoo coming out the back of her bikini bottoms. I had to ask her what it was and she said: “It’s just the tip of the iceberg!”

NATURAL DRIVE: New environmentally friendly vehicle.

POWER supply company Gas Natural have collaborated with car manufacturer Seat in order to deliver the first natural gas powered vehicle to the Guardia Civil.

The vehicle is part of the current agreement between the energy group and the institute for public safety for environmental performance improvement and energy efficiency. It was delivered at a ceremony attended by the managing director of Gas Natural, Manuel Gil, along with the director general of the Guardia Civil, Arsenio Fernandez de Mesa.

Among other initiatives, the agreement includes studies to improve the efficiency of

buildings and facilities for the general management of the Guardia Civil, and analysis incorporating use of natural gas in parkland and maritime vehicles to improve environmental performance and efficiency.

Meanwhile, the Guardia Civil has taken delivery of 110 new vehicles, valued at more than €3m, funded from the state security budget. The vehicles were presented to the corps by director general Arsenio Fernandez de Mesa, at the Colegio de Guardias Jovenes de Valdemoro in Madrid.

A total of 400 Guardia Civil vehicles have been replaced or renewed in the last two years.

Scrutinising shopaholics THE University Hospital of Bellvitge, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, near Barcelona, has defined for the first time three new subtypes of shopaholics, a disorder still rarely studied.

The finding is the result of several studies recently published by the Unit of Pathological Gambling and Other Behavioural Addictions of the Psychiatry Hospital de Bellvitge. The aim was to provide new insights into compulsive shopping disorder which affects between 6 and 7 per cent of the population.

One study identified three subtypes, the first of which consists mostly of men with high levels of gambling and low levels of social reward dependence.

A second mainly consists of educated women, occupationally active without addictive personality traits and the third is predominantly women but the onset of the disorder is early in addition to the presence of other psychiatric disorders and high dysfunctionality problems with school and work.

Once you crack open the nut, the water you discover inside is full of electrolytes, making it extremely hydrating and

To get at the flesh simply take out the inner shell and peel the brown layer off, leaving you with a delicious white ‘meat’ which is filled with plant protein containing 17 out of 20 essential amino acids, iron, folate, potassium, fibre and healthy MCT fats.

If you go a step further and peel the flesh into flakes then dry them, you have all the ingredients you need to make coconut butter.

Radical mayor Ada Colau’s government is determined to reclaim the Catalan stronghold from an overwhelming influx

of tourism that has seen locals complain their home city has become in essence a Barcelona theme park.

Many citizens are also being driven out of their homes as they are incapable of competing with the extremely profitable rental rates charged illegally in a burgeoning black economy.

An emergency plan unveiled a month ago with a €1.35m

budget has seen an army of inspectors dispatched to investigate denunciations made by angry neighbours.

A website for citizen collaboration has been established to share complaints and will illustrate a map of legally registered tourist rentals for residents’ reference.

Two key international accommodation platforms, Airbnb and Homeaway, have

been explicitly targeted by a new sanctioning regime which now has fines ranging from €60,000 to €600,000 at its disposal.

Although reaching crisis point in Barcelona, the issue is not confined to the metropolis, with authorities in Andalucia, the Balearics and Valencia also establishing harsh new regimes aimed at stamping out all the clandestine practices.

So in this week’s article I would like to cover some of the important points that as professional surveyors I would advise buyers to consider: obviously it would take a book to cover all the information required but I hope this will shine some light on what to look out for.

Let’s start with the location of the land, I’m assuming that you have chosen your favorite location but that’s not enough, there are several points that you will need to check out before buying.

Here are my top 10 tips for buying land on the Costas and Mallorca.

DREAM LOCATION: Make sure it stays that way by checking out local planning.

1. Check that the land can be built on legally; ask to see the current planning permission and how many m 2 you can build and how many floors 2. Check that your views will not be blocked if other properties are built around you 3. Check if you can design your dream

home facing South; if it’s not possible, position your pool to get afternoon sun 4. Now, take a good look at your land; you will need to clear the land before you can start building, you need to keep the costs low, as it adds no value to your home The cost will be high if the land is covered in hard rocks, trees and existing build-

The changing face of property funders

By Matthew Elliott A RADICAL change is taking place behind the scenes of the Spanish property market, which has been traversing shifting sands since the recession peaked and today’s ongoing recovery got underway.

There are roughly half a million unoccupied homes in Spain.�

The banks, so important and yet so reviled, are gradually relinquishing their control over mortgages and market dynamics, as they face tougher regulations, seek to protect their existing assets, and recede in a tide of new, more fluid and competitive, corporate players.

As noted in last week’s EWN, there are roughly half a million unoccupied homes in Spain and the contemporary focus is not on selling them, but rather constructing new housing developments that are

CONSORTIUM CAPITAL: Overtaking banks as key funders. at once more modern and also liberated from some of the murkier legal framework of the old homes.

Having suffered in the past, the banks are now exercising extreme caution when it comes to the funding of new developments, only embracing virtually foolproof

deals in exclusively prime locations.

That has cleared the path for alternative financiers, specifically fluid consortiums of investment funds, insurance firms and foreign banks, who are now the key players funding not only new housing

developments but also offices and commercial centres.

Spanish banks are also being frozen out by ECB regulations which pressure them to avoid granting loans without a mortgage guarantee, a stipulation of little interest to weightier corporations

who have to fend off financing options with a stick.

With declining capital many banks are also shedding the myriad of property assets from their portfolios and balance sheets, but remain the primary market force when it comes to individual mortgages.

The volume of new mortgages is of course rising as the recovery continues to make valuable headway, restoring citizen and investor confidence in the market. There was an almost 20 per cent increase in volume in the first five months of the year but the absolute numbers still pale in comparison to the halcyon days of 2005/06, when 700,000 new homes were built each year.

Today, even the most optimistic forecasts hint at the possibility of 250,000 new builds, a figure hoped to be reached within a decade.

These developments, alongside newer innovative mortgage systems, point to a likely exodus of Spanish banks from the property market. What that means for current and future homeowners only time will tell.

BY the month end late summer harvests will be bountiful and Spain’s ‘second spring’ just a month away. It’s time to decide what vegetables and herbs to plant for autumn, winter or spring consumption. New gardeners in Spain will be amazed by the possibilities for Christmas day: Broccoli/brussels sprouts: plant seeds early, plant plantlets in October or buy at that time.

Potatoes: keep old potatoes in a warm dark place to stimulate growth before planting out.

Non-storing onions: sow seeds in September, plant plantlets October/December.

Garlic: plant corms in November/December.

Carrots/parsnips: sow seeds from September.

Beetroot: September to October.

Radishes: sow seeds October to December.

Broad Beans: October to December.

Peas: November to December.

Lettuces and cut-and-come-again seed mixes: sow seeds September to October, plant plantlets as soon as you see any.

AUTUMN HARVEST: Bumper crop.

Agretti: sow seeds in September/October.

Wondering what agretti is? Illustrated above right it came up in one of my builder’s buckets it tastes like a cross between young spinach and samphire. I explored further and found: • It’s also known as land seaweed, friars beard, saltwort and Salsola soda.

• It’s full of the energy of spring • Vast quantities were burned in Spain and Italy in glass and soap making until a modern alternative was found in the 19th century.

• It became a niche peasant food in Italy.

• It’s recently been rediscovered and used in restaurants in Italy and the UK and made popular in TV cooking programmes.

• It’s tasty eaten drizzled with fine olive oil and lemon or in a tart.

• Seed stocks are low in UK and Italy.

When we wrote ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’ we had successfully grown 110 types of vegetables here in Spain. Some we liked better than others and I have now added Agretti.

Supporting survival of frogs Frogs are under threat worldwide, from habitat loss, pollution, introduced species and a deadly parasitic fungus known as amphibian chytrid.

If you want to play your part and ensure their survival in your back garden, there are several things you can do.

Create a pond, ideally locating it as close as you can to an existing population.

Amphibians rely on a network of ponds, so that if one pond gets into trouble and dries out or becomes polluted it can be recolonised quite fast. However, it’s important to let frogs

arrive at your pond by themselves. Frogs within 1000 metres, if the pond is suitable, will often come unsolicited.

Moving frogs into your pond can deplete other ponds of their populations, could possibly infect the transported frogs with disease, and might put you in

breach of Spanish law.

Perhaps even more important than the pond is the area around it, since amphibians spend much of their life in the terrestrial environment.

Depending on the species, they might only come back for a couple of weeks each year,

with most of the Spanish natives primarily terrestrial animals that breed in ponds.

Wild areas of the garden, leaf piles, rocks, logs and garden debris provide areas in which frogs can forage and hide.

Because all amphibians breathe partially (and in some

cases, completely) through their skin, they are particularly sensitive to toxic chemicals in the environment so avoid using chemicals if you hope to have frogs in the garden.

Frogs eat slugs so slug pellets are not necessary, they can be potentially harmful to frogs.

Summer smells within the home ALTHOUGH sometimes in the Spanish heat the smells of summer aren’t always quite so delightful, there’s no reason you can’t enjoy the soft idyllic scents of the season in your own home.

The first thing to do is thrust open the windows and ditch any chemical heavy products lurking under the sink. Toxic stenches and summer aren’t bedfellows and air freshener isn’t a substitute for fresh fruit.

If you’re lucky enough to have a garden then some freshly cut flowers or grass brought inside can work wonders. In an apartment simple supermarket herbs tossed in a bowl with lemon and orange skins makes an instant, vibrant difference.

Essential oils are another fantastic summer-friendly addition to the home, capable of soothing the mind and easily available in local shops. Try cedar to repel moths; tea tree to clean showers; lemon to disinfect kitchens and lavender to relax and balance your body.

Dogs have simple stomachs and short digestive tracts for digesting meat. They also lack the saliva enzyme amylase, which is necessary for pre-digesting starch.

Checking the label of a Super Premium or Performance food an animal protein will be listed as the first or second major ingredient. These should include chicken, turkey meat, or poultry by products, meals, meat or pork meals

or other animal by products. A least two sources of fat or oil should be included for adequate energy and essential fatty acids.

Fat is the dog’s source of energy.

Animal fat contains essential and nonessential fatty acids and provides a highly digestible and easily metabolised energy source. Generally, poultry, turkey or chicken fat are higher in quality because they have more unsaturated fatty acids.

Vegetable oils, such as soybean, lecithin corn, wheat germ, sesame seed or linseed all contain high levels of linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid for dogs and should be combined with animal fats for the best long-term results.

Carbohydrates are the third most important nutrient and ingredient class in modern Super Premium and Performance foods. Simple carbohydrates in dog food come from quality sources like rice, oatmeal, corn or wheat.

Fibre, a complex carbohydrate is essential for proper digestion and stool formation. Beet pulp and tomato promace are both high in fibre. Other sources include rice, soy hulls, oat

hulls, wheat bran and peanut hulls that come from the external portion of the seed coat. These sources, except peanut hulls, have microscopic sharp edges, which can cause small cuts in the intestine. Peanut hulls however, have the potential of being contaminated with aflatoxins and should never be used in a quality dog or cat food.

Vitamin and mineral fortification is a necessity and provides some of the most crucial nutrients. Often the list of micro nutrients is much longer than the list of major ingredients. Expect this list in all dog foods. Super Premium usually feature more than one source for each vitamin and mineral. The ingredient list will be longer compared to non-premium foods.

It’s not recommended you add anything by way of food supplement, or vitamin to Super Premium Foods.

To sum it up lets compare Regular/ Economic foods to Regular Petrol, then a Premium food to a Premium petrol, and of course Super Premium food to a Super Premium petrol. That’s a simple example and indication. I wouldn’t put diesel in my car!

Simple subtraction Cassandra Nash A weekly look - and not entirely impartial reaction to the Spanish political scene

WERE the Spanish really impressed by Pedro Sanchez’s ‘no means no’ strategy, the PSOE’s ratings would have shot up by more than a measly 1.1 per cent.

Apparently the PSOE is refusing to abstain when Rajoy faces his investiture ordeal because that’s what the majority of the party’s 190,000 paid-up members want. But 190,000 out of a potential 36,518,100 voters won’t win the PSOE a third election. On the contrary, they will help them to lose it.

The look of it IF there were an election tomorrow, Mariano Rajoy and the Partido Popular would emerge as the most-voted, despite the 0.5 per cent shaved off their 33 per cent June 26 election results.

The PSOE share crept from 22 per cent to 23.1 per cent, although in both cases the latest figures could be prompted more by image than substance.

These are members of the public responding to the pollsters; fickle, easily-distracted members of public, not weary voters trudging to the polling station. They do not base their voting intentions on ideology or the comportment of either candidate but are judging the PP and PSOE books by their covers. Pedro Sanchez is easier on the eye than Mariano Rajoy, that’s all.

National Police check arrival of Tall Ships A DIVISION of the National Police, made up of officers knowledgeable about border control and document forgery, was charged with overseeing the arrival of the boats participating in The Tal l Sh i p s R a c e s 2 0 1 6 w h ic h stopped at La Coruña between August 11 and 14.

With a total of 33 boats and about 1,300 crew members from 12 different nationalities officers were hard pressed to check all of the arrivals, but they achieved their desired aims by sending in a specific team to inspect vessels and crews in order to ensure that there were no cases of illegal immigration or trafficking in human beings.

In addition to those vessels participating in the race, agents also monitored other smaller vessels and their crew s wh o , a t t r a c t e d b y th e e v en t, have been able to call at the different marinas across the province.

England vs Spain JUST four days after England entertain Scotland in a 2018 World Cup qualifier, Sam Allardyce’s men will take on 2010 World Cup winners Spain at Wembley in a friendly match on November 15.

It will be Big Sam’s first friendly as England manager but it comes four games into the Russia 2018 campaign, which kicks off with a tough trip to Slovakia on September 4.

Both Spain and England endured a disappointing Euro 2016 campaign and both will be bringing new managers into the match-up, with Julen Lopetegui having replaced Vincente del Bosque in July.

Spain gained the upper hand in their most recent battle with England, beating Roy Hodgson’s team 2-0 in Alicante in November of last year, but they were defeated on their last Wembley visit in 2011 when Frank Lampard secured a 1-0 home win.

THE Olympics have seen their fair share of controversies and madness but a 1996 ‘aquatic holocaust’ performed by the 1996 French synchronised swimming team might just take the bizarre biscuit.

For those who don’t remember, or who have cast the moment from memory, eight French female swimmers provoked outcry across the world when they brought a Holocaustthemed routine to a shocked Atlanta audience performed to the music from Schindler’s List, a dark 1993 Spielberg drama reliving the horror of the Nazi concentration camps.

Dressed in red bathing suits they marched to the

pool side before re-enacting the arrival of Jewish women to the death camps, even going so far as to perform a dramatic salute midway through the act.

It was meant as an artistic way of conveying their emotions at the horror but was condemned by Jewish organisations and led to column inches invoking ‘Dr Mengele in spandex’ and the ‘reich moves.’

Surprisingly the French still finished fifth, and the swimmers weren’t even the only torture-themed Olympic offering the country provided that year; the ice-skating team having earlier performed a routine evoking violence under the Pinochet regime in Chile.
