Teutonic trouble

By Sandra Galo A raucous brawl between drunken German tourists and African street vendors erupted at the seaside town of Playa de Palma. The street fight involving around 30 men occurred at 7.15pm on Friday May 13 outside a pub near Balneario 5, in the party area known by Germans as ‘Ballermann’, a derivation of the Spanish word ‘Balneario’ (spa) used in Playa de Palma to divide the beach into various sections. The

Ballermann area along Playa de Palma’s waterfront is notorious for excessive drinking. Witnesses claimed that the fight was quite brutal saying that even people lying on the ground were kicked and beaten. Police, however, had difficulty making sense of what the heavily intoxicated holidaymakers were saying when they tried to gather statements from them. Local and National Police helped the injured until the arrival of medical teams. Ten Germans had to be taken by

ambulance to hospital. A mobile Accident and Emergency unit was also brought in due to the worrying state of one of the tourists. It is not known if any of the street vendors were injured as they fled the scene when police arrived. Questions are left unanswered regarding what incited the Friday the 13th brawl between the German tourists and African hawkers, but this type of incident is not new to the area with videos of previous years’ altercations between the two groups avail-

able for viewing online. The fight marked a sombre beginning to the area’s image this season with residents commenting that this year has begun with high numbers of young Germans never before seen in the area, giving some credence to the popular German claim that Mallorca is ‘Germany’s 17th state’. This reputation in recent years among holidaymakers around the island for rowdy behaviour has triggered a crackdown by authorities on excessive drinking.

this year of a reduction of bookings due to the events as has happened in the past because European tourists have opted to follow their favourite teams while enjoying their holidays on the island. Marin pointed out that tourist establishments have prepared in advance so that clients will be able to relax and

watch their favourite football teams or sports events during their holidays. Many hotels and restaurants around the island are getting everything ready for tourists to enjoy the upcoming UEFA EURO to be held from June 10 to July 10 by installing giant-screen televisions and offering all the services their guests may require.

THE Palma City Council is encouraging citizens to vote for their city in the Earth Hour City Challenge. Palma is one of two Spanish cities which are finalists in the global competition promoting renewable energy organised by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The other Spanish finalist is Murcia in southeastern Spain. According to WWF, the aim of the competition is to “highlight and reward city governments that are making substantial long-term efforts to combat climate change.” More than 125 cities worldwide have participated this year with 41 identified as finalists. In Spain, 16 cities joined

the challenge. An international jury of experts will decide the national winner as well as the global winner. Spain’s national winner will be announced on June 21 in a public event in Madrid. Palma has received recognition for the city’s way of using innovative measures to reduce emissions and promote the use of renewable energy including the use of biogas from waste (water, compost and landfill) to generate electricity and heat, as well as the installation of a municipal swimming pool powered by biomass and solar thermal energy. Final voyage GUARDIA CIVIL discovered the body of a French yachtsman inside his vessel in the yacht club of Puerto Andratx on May 11. Family members contacted the Air Sea Rescue service in the Balearics a few days before his body was discovered reporting that they had been unable to contact him. Air Sea Rescue notified the Andratx Yacht Club and Guardia Civil Officers were sent to investigate. A strange smell was noticed coming from the yacht and, upon boarding the vessel, officers discovered the body of Ceresne Poilippe who was due to celebrate his 49th birthday later in the month. Poilippe had sailed from France to Mallorca at the end of April aboard his yacht Centhalie apparently mooring at the yacht club on April 26.

Beach clean-up BEACHES in the municipality of Arta have returned to their pristine beauty thanks to a clean-up initiative taking place this month. More than 300 students from local schools including Llorenç Garcies i Font, Sant Salvador, Rosa dels Vents, Sant Bonaventura and Na Caragol participated in clean-up days on the beaches of Sa Duaia, Sa Canova and Ca los Camps. The endeavour is part of an environmental awareness campaign that the schools have been promoting throughout the year with the support of the town hall which is supporting the European campaign “Let’s Clean up Europe!” being promoted by the regional government.

The plan, which is being carried out through the municipal water company Emaya, in-

cludes an awareness campaign to promote the saving of water. Deputy Mayor of Ecology and municipal spokeswoman Neus Truyol explained that the campaign will include putting up posters in public areas as well as distributing leaflets and stickers in Spanish and Catalan as well as English and German

with the message: “Let’s be realistic, the glass is half empty. Don’t waste water.” Truyol explained that the campaign will be done simultaneously in other municipalities of the island. Measures also include asking large consumers of water to take steps to reduce consumption.

Garrido reported that both improvements are pending the Environmental Impact Report. Once the report is received, tenders will be accepted for the roadworks. She added that the road improvements are long-awaited by the municipality of Ses Sal i nes and off i ci al s are, therefore, working to make them a reality as soon as possible.

Among fastest growing ACCORDING to the Regional Observatory of Spain, the Balearic Islands will be the region with the most growth over the next two years. The prediction made by experts of BBVA expects 3.2 per cent growth this year and 3.3 per cent in 2017. Two of the factors attributing to the growth are the relaxation of fiscal adjustment and tourism. According to the study, the Balearics along with the Canary Islands and Cataluña which are all benefited by tourism remain among the fastest growing economies in 2016.

ENDURANCE: Anna’s entire journey will be more than 200 kilometres. By Sandra Galo ENDURANCE swimmer Anna Wardley is preparing to set a new world record with her Balearic Swim Challenge this month. The 39-year-old from Portsmouth (UK) will attempt to be the first person to swim from the Balearic Islands to the Spanish mainland which she plans to accomplish in three stages. The first leg of the journey is a 37-kilometre swim from Menorca to Mallorca and is expected to take her from 16 to 20 hours to complete.

Stage two is an 88-kilometre swim from Mallorca to Ibiza which should take around 36 hours. The final leg of the challenge will be a 90-kilometre journey from Ibiza to the Spanish mainland calculated at around 40 hours. Anna has been training in Mallorca in preparation for the challenge which will raise money for three charities including Marine Inspirations, Joves Navegants and Marine Animal Rescue Project. Balearics Succession Tax 2016 If you live in Mallorca, the chances are that your heirs, or perhaps yourself, will be hit by Spanish succession and gift tax. You need to understand how this tax will affect you and your family, and what steps you can take now to mitigate the impact. While the Spanish government did not introduce many succession tax changes for 2016, the local Islas Baleares government has made some changes which apply to deaths and gifts from 1st January 2016 onwards. Spanish succession and gift tax basics Spanish succession tax is due on death if the asset being inherited is located in Spain or if the recipient is resident in Spain. The same rules apply for gifts. The tax is paid by each recipient, and there is no blanket spouse-to-spouse exemption. What you pay According to Spanish state rules, tax is applied at progressive rates from 0% to 34%. There are also multipliers applicable depending on the beneficiary’s relationship to you and

Under state rules, descendants, ascendants and spouses (Group I and II beneficiaries) receive an allowance of €15,956. Relatives like siblings, cousins, nephews etc (Group III beneficiaries) receive €7,993. An additional allowance is available for descendants under 21 years old. There is a 95% allowance against the inherited value of the main home

(maximum €122,606 per inheritor), but only if the recipient is a spouse, descendant or ascendant and keeps the property for 10 years. Autonomous communities While the Spanish government sets state succession tax rates, allowances, deductions and exemptions nationally, the autonomous communities can vary these, usually in the taxpayer’s favour. Whether the state or local autonomous community rules apply for each case depends on where the beneficiary and the donor are resident and where the assets inherited/gifted are located. Application rules can be complex and you should seek professional advice. Islas Baleares regional rules Under the regional rules of the Balearics, the allowance for Group I and II beneficiaries increases to €25,000. Children under 21 receive an extra €6,250 for each year under 21 (maximum €50,000). Group III

beneficiaries receive €8,000 and Group IV €1,000. The main home relief is 100%, up to a maximum of €180,000, with the same conditions as the state rules. Under the regional rules, there used to be a 99% deduction for descendants over the age of 21, ascendants and spouses on taxable inheritances. However, as of 1st January 2016, the Islas Baleares government removed this regional allowance and replaced it with more beneficial progressive succession and gift tax rates for Group I and II beneficiaries, as follows: From €0 to €700,000 - 1% From €700,000 to €1,000,000 - 8% From €1,000,000 to €2,000,000 11% From €2,000,000 to €3,000,000 15% From €3,000,000 onwards - 20% Children under 21 continue to receive the 99% reduction indicated above.

The tax bands and rates for Group III and IV beneficiaries are largely the same as the state ones, they have just been rounded up. Tax planning With specialist advice, many expatriates find they can use compliant arrangements to reduce succession tax, as well as UK inheritance tax, for their family and heirs. Preventing overbooking By Sandra Galo TOUR operators and hoteliers are stopping sales for June, July and August in Mallorca to avoid overbooking problems. The decision comes at a time when there is a rising demand for reservations

in the main markets of Germany, Britain, and Nordic countries. TUI, Thomas Cook, Alltours, Jet2, Monarch and Cosmos all agree that at this time they must maintain maximum contact with hotels to avoid the problem of having to divert tourists to other hotels because full occupancy is not always

registering in time, which could cause problems during peak months. Hoteliers in major tourist areas of the island said that the forecasts for July and August are optimum, and that they are taking appropriate measures to adjust bookings according to the numbers contracted by tour operators.

Was Columbus from Mallorca? RESEARCH is being done to find out if the legendary Christopher Columbus who ‘sailed the ocean blue in 1492’ and is credited with discovering America, was in fact from Mallorca. Researcher Jose Antonio Lorente Acosta, who has been investigating the famous explorer since 2003, has been studying Columbus’ remains, his descendants and an uncle of the Prince of Viana. The objective of the investigations is to prove that the famous admiral was born in the Mallorcan town of Felanitx, to the Prince of Viana and a woman named Margalida Colom. New DNA-testing technology may be able to soon provide the answer. Lorente Acosta believes that they may have the results in October of this year.

Love triangle tragedy in Santa Ponsa By Sandra Galo TRAGEDY occurred in Santa Ponsa where a Spanish man murdered the boyfriend of his ex-wife and then used the same rifle to kill himself. The incident occurred in the early hours of

Thursday morning (May 12) at the home of the victim, a 37-year-old Spaniard named Joan Jose. The perpetrator, 66-year-old Bernat Ferra, entered Joan’s home and shot him twice in front of his ex-wife Olga before killing himself. The couple had separated in 1998 and

Ferra had apparently been pressuring Olga to return to him. Olga, a 37-year-old Russian national, alerted emergency services who arrived to find the two bodies in the home and Olga covered in blood. She and the couple’s daughter were both present in the house during the incident.

Olga sustained a slight blow to the head and she and her daughter had to be attended by psychologists. The tragedy occurred in a home located at Calle Serra de Alfavia. Judicial Police have taken over the investigation which is being handled as a crime of passion.

Shark euthanasia A BLUE shark, which days earlier had been towed out to open sea, had to be put out of its misery after returning to Mallorca’s coast. The animal was first spotted on Wednesday (May 11) near the port of Palma and then again the following day. Agents from the Guardia Civil’s Maritime Service and a biologist from the Palma Aquarium, after checking that the shark was in good condition, accompanied the fish to the open sea by carefully tying it to an inflatable boat. The shark was spotted again two days later, this time

in Cala Falco. After careful examination, technicians from the Palma Aquarium decided that the animal had ‘irreparable damage’ and determined that the shark would not survive, choosing to put it out of its misery so as “not to prolong the unnecessary suffering of the fish.” Protocol was then followed for euthanasia by first administering a sedative to calm the shark and then giving it a lethal injection. A necropsy performed afterwards confirmed the animal’s poor state possibly due to heavy metal poisoning.

Flower power con artists arrested By Sandra Galo NATIONAL POLICE in Palma arrested three ‘Claveleras’ (Carnation seller con artists) as part of a campaign to combat this type of crime.

Beetle against the odds THE Balearics is one of the few regions that continues to fight against the ‘picudo rojo’ or red palm weevil. According to Andreu Juan Serra, the head of the Balearics Agricultural Service, the Balearic Islands along with the Canary Islands, Valencia and Galicia have not yet “thrown in the towel” in the fight against the red palm weevil. Agriculture technicians are somewhat optimistic, since in the last decade the implementation of an action protocol has reduced the number of palms affected by the insect. Since the pest appeared in 2006, around 11,000 palm trees have been affected especially in the areas of Palma, Llucmajor, Calvia and Pollensa.

Land tug of war THE Pollensa City Council plans to turn over land to the Department of Health that was originally intended for the building of an auditorium. The land which is currently being used as a car park will be turned over to health officials to build a new Health Centre. Opponents, however, say that this is “the easiest and fastest solution but not the most ideal.” Those in opposition promote an alternative plan, which would include the demolition and reconstruction of the current health centre at the site where it now stands. Signatures opposing the plan are being collected through change.org.

The Claveleras are women who offer flowers to tourists to divert their attention in order to rob them. Palma has one of the highest incidents in the country of this type of crime which has led to complaints not only from victims, but also

from shop owners, cruise-ship operators and municipal workers. The women committing these types of crimes had been under a restraining order to keep them away from the city centre during which time no

crimes were reported. Now that the restraining order has expired, the women are once again working main tourist areas in the city including the Cathedral, the Parc de la Mar, Sa Feixina Park and the Born Avenida.

Ending poaching through art By Sandra Galo SWEDISH photographer Frank af Petersens will have an exhibition of his photography entitled ‘The Poaching War’ at Palma’s Rialto Living until June 7. The work gives a fascinating insight into the current poach-

ing crisis in Africa. For several months each year, Petersens works as a volunteer photographer to help stop elephant and rhino poaching in Africa by exposing the truth about it. Guests are able to witness, through his photographs, the struggle of rangers trying to stop this illegal hunting.

Petersens has had a large number of solo exhibitions in the United States and Europe, and is represented in private and corporate collections in various countries around the world including the US, Sweden, Britain, Switzerland, Norway, Spain, Italy, Kenya and China.

More waiters contracted for work than any other job MORE waiters were contracted for work in the month of April in Palma than for any other job. According to Palma Activa, more than 1,190 contracts were signed for waiters and 1,300 for waitresses. Contracts for waitresses were second only to those for cleaning staff in offices, hotels and other establishments. Jobs in demand for men included travel agent

positions, builders, lorry drivers and kitchen assistants. The positions most in demand for women were shop assistants, travel agent employees and administrative positions dealing with the public. Councillor for Tourism, Commerce and Work Joana Maria Adrover announced that employment figures in March reached 195,921, which are the highest for this month since 2008.

Terrace abuse control THE Neighbour’s Association of Santa Pagesa is requesting that the Palma City Council control abuses of terraces in the Blanquerna area. The president of the association, Miquel Angel Barcelo, explained that residents are not opposed to the terraces and stressed that the aim is to ensure a peaceful coexistence between residents and restaurateurs. Barcelo pointed out that noise, which has been one of the most contentious issues, increases during televised football matches. Some residents have also complained about problems arising from the extraction of fumes. Barcelo added that now people can’t sit on some of the benches and that around trees blackboards and other strange items have been placed. The association also requests that land-use planning be developed with the objective of avoiding the problems other areas like Calle Fabrica are facing.

In the illegal dumps By Sandra Galo AN illegal dumping site has been discovered near the road known as Rafal Negre between Marratxi and Bunyola. Two abandoned cars and a

lot of debris have been found. Residents in the area say that it is the work of heartless people who have left their rubbish without any regard to others causing harm to the affected land owners in the area.

Shipwreck found THE “Derelicte de les Ilumetes” (The Wreck of Lights) sunken ship in the waters off the seaport village of Porto Cristo might be from the time of the Emperor Nero. Preliminary indications suggest that the vessel is around 40 metres long and could possibly be a Roman transport ship sunk because of weather in the first century AD. The finding is important since there are few remains of these types of commercial vessels.

Marratxi’s Councillor for Environment Cristina Alonso said that the owners of the vehicles have been identified and ordered to remove the cars and that appropriate disciplinary proceedings have been started.

Limit access assessment By Sandra Galo THE town hall of Soller has positively assessed the result of the town’s recent measure, limiting access to the Plaça Constitucio during the Firo celebrations. Access to the square to view the climatic ending of the famous re-enactment of the town’s final battle was limited this year to 4,000, which meant that possibly more than 1,000 spectators were denied access to the event.

Festivities Councillor Laura Celia admitted that the most negative aspect of the celebrations was that a lot of people seemed to have only come for street drinking. It was this group, she added, that then tried to enter the final battle area at the last minute but were denied access. Celia believes that the measures were a success but that some entry points were overwhelmed and will need to have more staff working there in the future.

Guarding indigenous goats’ genes VARIOUS hunting associations have collaborated with the Alcudia Town Hall and SEMILLA to capture several wild Mallorcan goats for breeding purposes. SEMILLA (Agricultural and Fisheries Improvement Services) plans to introduce them into their breeding and selection programme. The hunters used a traditional hunting method to capture the animals alive without harming them. The Mallorcan wild goat is of special value since it is unique to Mallorca. The animals are now under the care of SEMILLA which includes the participation of technicians, farmers and hunters who hope to safeguard the genetic, environmental and hunting heritage of the island.

Harmony on way to Palma By Sandra Galo HARMONY OF THE SEAS, the biggest cruise ship in the world, will be in Palma on June 13 as part of its maiden voyage. The cruise ship which is part of the Royal Caribbeanâ€™s Oasis Class will house 6,360 passengers and 2,100 crew members and includes a 1,400-seat the-

atre, a plant-filled park and a 10-storey water slide. Other attractions are a giant climbing wall, a rope slide, mini golf, surf simulator, floating jacuzzis and a casino. Passengers will also be served by two robot barmen in the Bionic Bar. The giant vessel is 66 metres wide and 362 metres long making it 50 metres longer

than the height of the Eiffel Tower. It will produce 20 per cent less carbon dioxide emissions than the two biggest ships in its class. The shipâ€™s home port for the summer season will be in Barcelona where it will offer passengers seven-day cruises with ports of call in Palma, Marseille, La Spezia, Civitavecchia and Naples.

An equal amount of waste RESIDENTS are indignant over a municipal plot of land located in Calle Pilar in Manacor that is filled with mountains of debris. The land where the municipality had hoped the regional government would build the new courthouse appears to be in a state of abandonment. Residents have expressed indignation be-

cause town halls and the Council of Mallorca require strict treatment of waste with penalties for infractions but these same public institutions themselves sometimes violate the same rules. Socialist councillor Sebastia Nadal said the town hall and its representatives should be the first to comply with the ordinances.

Before taking your vehicle to the local ITV (MOT) centre, take some time to check lights and indicators, tyre treads and pressures, that no dash warning lights are illuminated, and seat belts. There were plenty of worthies attending but not that many representatives of governments around the world and he couldn’t even ‘persuade’ the British Virgin Islands, an Overseas Territory inexorably linked with the Panama revelations to attend officially. At the end of the day, Britain is renowned for ‘playing with a straight bat’ and in fairness the government has been trying to stop British firms from gaining contracts through bribery, but unfortunately whilst other members of the European Union may pay lip service to these high ideals, it still goes on, often with State assistance although the ‘bribes’ are dressed up to look as if they are official aid. HAVING been at the centre of a number of investigations concerning ‘creative tax accounting’ and having paid at least some of the taxes it is believed to have previously avoided paying, Google has now decided that it is time to move to the side of the angels. The giant search platform has decided that it will ban advertisements from lenders who appear to take advantage of those in desperate need of financial assistance and any company that appears to be a ‘pay day loan’ operator offering short term assistance (60 days or less) and charging more than 36 per cent interest may no longer advertise with the group. According to the BBC Google’s director of product policy David Graff said “Our hope is that fewer people will be exposed to misleading or harmful products. “This change is designed to protect our users from deceptive or harmful financial products and will not affect companies offering loans such as mortgages, car loans, student loans, commercial loans, revolving

It is interesting to note that he made no negative comment about mainstream credit card operators who can charge near to that upper percentage figure despite the fact that the Bank rate is 0.5 per cent and of course Google will continue to direct users to porn sites and other areas of questionable activity. In actual fact, whilst it is easy to be cynical about Google, it has in the past taken action to ban a wide range of dubious commercial sites including those selling counterfeit items and explosives and it is possible that this ban will actually have more effect than government legislation which is why the Online Lenders Association is not impressed by the decision. There is no doubt that many consider that the charges levied by the companies in question are only a step above a door to door loan shark and even with new restrictions on their activities due in July, they have certainly not been seen to have the best interests of the consumer at heart.

By John Smith CHRISTINE LAGARDE, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund declared at a press conference held at the Treasury in London that a vote in favour of Brexit in the forthcoming referendum would have “pretty bad, to very, very bad” consequences. Confirming that her opinion is similar to that expressed by Mark Carney governor of the Bank of England the previous day, she went on to say that “she had not seen anything that’s positive” about Brexit and indicated that it could “lead to a technical recession” for the UK. Naturally, those in favour of the Brexit immediately came out against the observations of probably the world’s most powerful woman involved in finance indicating that the IMF had got things wrong before and according to Priti Patel MP “It appears the Chancellor is cashing in favours to Ms Lagarde in order to encourage the IMF to bully the British people.” Lord Lamont former Chancellor of the Exchequer who presided over ‘Black Wednesday’ and was forced to withdraw Britain from the European Exchange Rate Mechanism also condemned the statement by Ms Lagarde. Ms Lagarde however said the Fund had a duty to assess the risks of Brexit and to an-

nounce them saying “I don’t think that in the last six months I have visited a country anywhere in the world where I have not been asked ‘what will be the economic consequences of Brexit?’” In addition, she said that the research undertaken by the IMF indicated that in the event of

a withdrawal from the Union, Britain could see a stock market crash as well as a drop in house prices. According to the BBC, when asked if the Treasury had had any input into the IMF’s conclusions, Ms Lagarde responded: “Heck no! If you are suggesting that, you don’t know the IMF.” As the minutes count down to the actual referendum, the next week or so will see a frenzy of comment from both sides of the argument before the official parties are formally banned from making public pronouncements starting 28 days before the vote takes place.

WHY are we all so frightened to speak the truth? These latest so-called ‘gaffs’ by Cameron, and even our dear old Queen (not Elton J, I hasten to add!) are cases in point. Let’s be quite clear. The Chinese are a rude jumped-up lot. They behaved abominably on their recent state visit. Even threatening to cut their visit short if, among other demands, their hotel wardrobes weren’t painted red! Furthermore, we do give aid to criminally corrupt and cruel countries, of which Nigeria and Afghanistan are two of the worst. It is also a proven fact that, although only 12 per cent of London’s men are black, 46 per cent of knife crimes and half of the gun crimes are committed by black males. There are also areas in British

cities under Sharia law. This latest one mind you, really takes the whole tin. Muslim leaders denying that terrorist attacks are almost always preceded by screams of ‘Allah Akbar.’ Well of course they are. I’ve never heard of any of them calling out ‘Christ is risen!’ The police were perfectly correct in voicing this ‘battle cry’ before their recent terror exercise. This

perversion of a religious statement is often the first warning the public get of an impending attack and may just give them a chance to at least duck before the ensuing holocaust. The police succumbing to the Muslim demands for an apology is another pathetic example of the fear of offending, which has become a UK malady over the past few years. We have to start calling a spade a spade. If we don’t, we may as well cave in now and turn the whole thing over to the luvvies and PC prats; the naïve do gooders who the militants will one day take a fiendish delight in beheading and raping in Trafalgar Square, en route to reducing Westminster to rubble. As a final observation this week, why has there been a famine in the national reporting of the Calais and Kos border immigrant problems over the last few weeks? Funny that! Ideas to get to a happy place become non-negotiable in my life. I have to exercise every day, I train every morning if I can, or if not in the morning then I get it in somehow during the course of the day. My friend Chetana who runs Bodhana Wellness in Portals tells me that this is my form of meditation. There are a lot of different forms of meditation which are on offer at the festival which she organises every year in June (search Mallorca Meditation Festival if you want info). Here’s a few ideas for you if you need a pick-me-up, doing some of these should help you get into a happy place, and then you’ll start to see many more nice things happening around you as well. LAST weekend I had a break through, not a breakdown, or a break up, but a break THROUGH! After months of doing the same thing over and over again, and continually getting it wrong, I started to get it right. It was a truly beautiful moment when I realised that practising was actually paying off. This got me really inspired, and I went on to have a fabulous day all round, like a magical chain reaction of happy. I find that when I am happy and positive that many more happy and positive things seem to happen around me, or perhaps I’m just in a better mental position to appreciate them. Back in the day, when I was a bit sadder than I am now and I didn’t really know how to deal with difficult things in my life, I learnt the hard way that having something every day which I could look forward to

with a friend you haven’t seen in a while, or going out for dinner. Some things though have

The Invictus Games lesson PRINCE HARRY recently opened the second International Invictus Games at Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida, which sees wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and other associated veterans take part in sports including wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, and indoor rowing. The concept was first put together by Prince Harry as he saw the spirit and need to recover in many of those in the British Armed Forces who had been injured, often very severely, in times of ‘war’ in various trouble spots around the world. Named after the Latin word invictus meaning ‘unconquered or undefeated’, it accurately describes the dedication and incredible accomplishment that those who take part can achieve, thanks to the effort that they put into overcoming their individual disabilities. The Invictus Games are international and now attract participants from 15 countries, mainly those who have been involved in conflict in Afghanistan and Iraq, although any serviceman or woman who has been injured physically or mentally whilst in service of their country is welcome to participate. When you see the way in which these brave men and women have overcome such dreadful injuries to allow them to participate in the rough and tumble of competitive sport, it is quite incredible, and certainly brings home the fact that many of our day-to-day troubles are nothing compared to what these people have suffered and achieved.

IF Britain’s membership of the EU is essential for world peace and the world’s financial security, why did Cameron return with such a poor deal? Kill three birds with one stone, as by voting Brexit the British get their c o u n t r y b a c k , A me ric a is forced to find another buffer state against Russia, and the UK gets rid of Cameron who has been shown to be a manipulative and deceptive quisling. What is best? I WISH to comment on C V William s’s l e t t e r i n s u p p o rt o f Brexit, which focuses on the primary objective of the referendum, namely, what is best for the United Kingdom? As C V Williams quite rightly points out, this is about what is in the best interests of the country inhabited by our children and future generations. This is not a referendum on what is best for expatriates who left the UK for what they perceived to be a better life in Spain, however, that is not to say that British citizens living outside of the UK sh o u l d b e d e n ied th eir right to vote. Many people will simply want to look after number one but this is, surely, a much bigger question than ‘what’s in it for me,’ here! At present, nobody knows what would be the effect on expatriates living in Spain or elsewhere in Europe if the UK votes to leave, and many questions will not be answered unless and until the UK does leave, but we should remember that it is a two-way street. We are being subjected to a climate of fear and foreboding, most of which is based on the unknown, with financial forecasts predicated on anything but fact and espoused by so-called experts who struggle to produce accurate forecasts from month to month. They speak all too freely about the cataclysmic effect that leaving the EU would have on Britain’s trade, but seem to make no reference to t h e e c o n o mic co n s e quences of tit-for-tat tariffs/sanctions b e i n g i m p o se d o n g o o d s destined for the UK from Germany, France and the rest of the EU!

WOW!! You seem to be missing the point of my light-hearted piece (Issue 1607) Mr Henderson. The whole point was optics are not Spanish, the whole experience of shot pouring is missing! You also failed to point out as I said in the initial article that I don’t drink spirits, so chasing inferior spirits at inferior prices is so far from my intention. As I also said optics are fine for stock control and enhancing the bottom line but again we are in Spain! With regards to not knowing anything about bars, I have spent most of my life running catering houses, restaurants and public houses. I was also a member of UKBG (look it up) for many years. Women more likely to suffer illness than men ARE women really the weaker sex? A survey by retail analysts Mintel said that women were more likely to report having suffered various ailments, with 81 per cent reporting suffering a headache in the past year, versus 68 per cent of men. It found 57 per cent of women have suffered back pain, compared to 50 per cent of men and one in three women; 34 per cent said they had experienced five or more different types of pain in the last 12 months versus one in four men. Some 57 per cent of women who suffered a cold or flu said they coped by going to bed and resting, compared to a lower 44 per cent of men. The study found that 78 per cent of women are happy to turn to over the counter medicines when they are ill, compared to 66 per cent of men. Mintel’s Consumer Lifestyles Analyst said the research showed that women are notably more likely to experience more types of pain as well as experiencing a greater range of pains. This could be due to the fact that women continue to multi-task in terms of running the household, caring for the children and holding down a job leading them to feel run down and more susceptible to bugs and illness. SPECIALIST: Doctor Luis Perez Belmonte. THIS week our GP, Dr Perez Belmonte, has replied to a reader’s letter expressing his concerns regarding his knee pain. In a note, the doctor explained that this is one of the most common complaints medical professionals hear from both younger and older patients and can have a variety of causes. Dear Doctor, I’m a 46-year-old man and for some time now I’ve often been feeling quite a lot of pain in my knees, especially when I exercise. I don’t remember having done anything to have sprained or over-exerted them and I’m not really overweight, I could maybe lose a couple of kilos at the most. Plus I’ve always tried to walk for a while every day to keep fit. I’m worried about this pain in case it is a sign of an illness or something, I don’t think I’m old enough for it to be arthritis or anything like that. What do you think it

could be, and what can I do about it? Dear patient, Joint pain, especially in the knees, is a very frequent reason people see their doctors. Reading your letter it sounds to me like it could be a condition caused by general wear and tear to the joints from continuous use. The first thing you should do is see a traumatologist who will examine you and probably have xrays done. If they do not find any injuries or other obvious causes, you should then see a specialist in internal medicine who will look for possible rheumatoid conditions such as arthritis. For the time being I would recommend you do your best to avoid over-exerting the joints, only take moderate exercise, lose some weight, take a vitamin supplement and use pain-killers sparingly, only when they are really need-

FROM May 21 to June 17, Palma will host 20 live concerts in various courtyards and emblematic places around the city. The ‘Season of Concerts of Corpus’ is an initiative by the Palma City Council to offer a series of classical music concerts, 14 of which will be free to the public. The season kicks off on Saturday May 21 at 8pm in the Courtyard of Can Oms with Nuria Graham presenting ‘In the cave’. Half an hour later in the Cathedral, the Conservatory’s Symphonic Orchestra will perform Requiem by Hector Berlioz accompanied by various choirs from the island. The most anticipated of the concerts will take place on June 10 when Maria del Mar Bonet performs with the Balearic Symphony Orchestra. For open spaces, entry is free and no ticket is required. If the event is taking place in a closed area, tickets are required and can be picked up at the Information Centre located in the Historic Centre on Calle Almudaina, 7A Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 1.30pm or at the Teatro Mar i Terra Espacio de Cultura located on Carrer de Sant Magi, 89-91, Tuesday to Friday from 4.30pm to 9.30pm. ANCIENT patio style gardens are great for the21st century. Patio gardens are not something invented by the Chelsea Flower Show, but are a style of garden existing in southern Europe since the Iberians and Romans. Today the attractiveness of them still remains for four main reasons and each are creatively illustrated in the annual May Patio Festival in Cordoba which has just finished, but keeping your eyes open you will discover wonderful examples throughout Spain. The best are places to live in throughout the year with wallto-wall shading during the hottest hours and months and with the shading keeping the ground mostly dry during the rainy season.

Roman style patios not highlighted in the Cordoba Fiesta Roman lifestyle was an outward going one with eating and drinking away from home with visits to the theatre and sporting arenas. Home patios were therefore for resting and not merrymaking and patios tended to be cool and subdued with white walls and green vegetation. Much use being made of ferns, ivies and aspidistras. 21st Century Style Arab Patios Arab life in Cordoba was a much more subdued affair than today with leisure time focused on home especially where women were concerned. So patios became full of perfumed flowering plants and today competitors in each year’s May Patio Festival attempt to outdo historic levels of beauty. The famous patios of the Viana Palace The Viana Palace in Cordoba is one of my favourites. The family palace is surrounded by a dozen patios of different styles. These are not in the Cordoba Patio Festival, but are open all the year round.

The Bodegas de Campos Patios The historic Bodegas de Campos is a good place to eat after several hours of traipsing around the historic gems of Cordoba at any time of the year, but don’t miss out on seeing the historic maze of patios

of this part of the old town. There is an interesting tour each day, 11.00am in English and midday in Spanish/English, through a complex of old wine cellars, houses factories and patios. Villa and apartment covered terraces If you have a sizeable covered villa or apartment terrace treat its design like a patio with a roof. There are several suggested design ideas for this in the book ‘Apartment gardening Mediterranean style.’ There are so many examples of ancient creative gardens in Spain to inspire today’s expat gardeners to plan to live outdoors throughout most months of the year. Arboreal lizard AMONG the reptile species that can be observed in our gardens is one of the most charismatic of the lot, and Spain’s singular arboreal lizard. The colourful Mediterranean

chameleon is the only chameleon species found in Spain, although some authorities believe it was introduced from Africa several hundred years ago.

Whatever its origin, the somewhat lugubrious-looking beast is restricted to Huelva, Cadiz and Malaga, being most abundant in the latter and a relatively common sight in lessdeveloped areas. With its bizarre, three-toed grip and prehensile tail, the chameleon is perfectly-suited to a life among trees and shrubbery, where it lies in wait for its insect prey, which is ambushed using its ballistic, long, sticky tongue. Breeding takes place in late summer to early autumn, when females descend to the ground to bury their eggs in sand or loose earth. Up to 45 may be laid, and they remain concealed for 10 to 12 months, with newly hatched babies appearing the following year. Recent research has shown that chameleons do not change colour for camouflage, but in response to emotional states such as fear or stress or to communicate with other chameleons.

FOOD has a vast effect on dogs’ behaviour as indeed we learn from feeding children wrong food where behaviour is affected. Food allergies can cause dermatological discomfort. It has been estimated that at least 50 per cent of all skin problems in cats and dogs are caused by dietary allergies. These can be triggered in minutes, hours or days. Sensitivity to an allergy caused by a protein can often be lifelong. Some dogs can digest the lactose in cows’ milk while the undigested lactose quickly produces an upset stomach with others. Many owners give far too many vitamins - a well-balanced diet should not have to be supplemented.

Scratching, licking and digging could be an indication of an allergic reaction to food and the eating of grass, twigs and roots sometimes is an indication that the food is not being digested properly. The destruction of fibre-based material could be another sign that there is a craving for fibre to help the digestive process in some way. Many pet shops and vets are now selling artificial bones. But beware of anything coloured since this must have an additive. I would only buy one which had a label stating what chemicals had been added.

Grooming is also essential, since a smooth, tangle-free coat will protect your dearest’s delicate skin. Avoid the risk of heat stroke by ensuring that your animal has access to clean, cool – not ice cold – water at all times.

Do not leave your dog, or any animal, alone in the car, even if the windows are open, since it can take just a few minutes for a dog to become fatally overheated and dehydrated.

When taking your dog for a walk, remember if the ground is too hot for your hand, it’s also too hot for your pet’s delicate paws, meaning the hottest parts of the day are best avoided.

Gibraltar achieves second in RC44 A GIBRALTAR sailing boat has taken second place overall in the RC44 World Championships, held in Sotogrande from May 11 to 15, against tough competition which included sailors with America’s Cup and Olympic Games experience. Peninsula Petroleum, owned and skippered by John Bassadone, a Gibraltar businessman, was squeezed out of first place, although he did lead after the second day of fleet racing. His team won the event in 2012 and was identified on the leader board by the Union Flag rather than more-appropriate flag of Gibraltar.

Famous yacht in danger THE USS Sequoia, a designated National Historic Landmark in the USA, was used by American presidents from 1933 to 1977 when it was sold, in the same way that the Royal Yacht Britannia was sold after being decommissioned. The much-smaller American yacht which had seen occupancy by some of the most high-profile presi d e n t s, i n c l u d in g J o h n F Kennedy and Richard Nixon, as well as Queen Elizabeth II who borrowed it from Dwight D Eisenhower, was not majorly seaworthy and a f t e r b e i n g so ld , it s a ile d along the Potomac river. History says that Harry S Truman decided to bomb Hiroshima while on the boat, and Richard Nixon not only met Leonid Brezhnev on board, but it was also on the Se q u o i a t h a t h e b ro k e th e news to his family that he was going to resign. allow them to take possession of the vessel and presumably re-fit it for onwards sale, but the longer this takes the more risk of damage there is to the historic vessel.

Staying till 2023 ALICANTE will continue to host the start of the Volvo Ocean Race until 2023. President of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, announced that the Consell in Alicante has decided to assume the cost of hosting the event, which means Alicante Port will continue to be the starting point for the round-theworld yacht race, signing an agr eem ent f or 2020 and 2023 with the race organisers. An agreement had already been signed for 2017, when t he next edi t i on launches. Pui g sai d t he cost i s around €22 million that the Consell shall bear, and private sponsorship will be offered. The president also said he welcomed the initiative of the Alicante Provincial Council to assist financially in the event and, in fact, is to create a commission to take over the organisation of both race events.

M4 the rarest of them all By Matt Ford BMW has unveiled the stunning new M4 Competition Sport (CS) at the Madrid International Auto Show, an exclusive edition for Spain limited to just 60 officially numbered units, making it even rarer than the 700-unit M4 GTS, which is available worldwide. The elite model combines the virtues of the M4 Coupe, as rear seats remain in place, with brash aesthetic and aerodynamic enhancements courtesy of a suite of M Performance parts. The exterior is thus super sharp, with bespoke kidney grille and side mirrors, carbonfibre front splitter, air curtains, rear diffuser, and a monster fixed rear wing, plus the same 20-inch light alloy wheels, high

performance low profile tyres, and carbon ceramic brakes as the GTS. Inside, new bodyhugging seats offer improved lateral support thanks to optimised grip fins, with other additions including full carbon fibre trim, an enhanced audio system, heads up display, and a numbered plaque, plus an exclusive key fob. Thirty not the magic number A RECENT Freedom of Information Request (FOI) has revealed that 30-year-old women are 19 times more likely to be caught drink-driving than 18year-old women. If that seems outrageous, men are worse, with 30-yearolds clocking up 95 per cent more offences compared to 18year-old drivers in the past five years. Although 30-year-olds are more likely to offend than their teenage counterparts, 27-yearold men and 26-year-old women were the most likely to drive having quaffed a few imbibes, with 8,886 and 1,620 infractions, respectively. Elderly drivers fared slightly better, with 511 80-year-olds committing transgressions, nearly twice as many as 17year-olds.

BRUCE WAYNE is a pretty cool customer: billionaire by day, superhero by night, and owner of a series of outlandish vehicles throughout his adventures, most famously the iconic Batmobile. Now, thanks to Swedish automotive madmen Caresto, you too can feel like the Caped Crusader, provided you have plenty of cash, a spare Lamborghini Gallardo, and an ex-Koenigsegg engineer on hand, that is. The delightfully ridiculous ride was designed for 2016 Gumball 3000 entrants Team Galag, after they enlisted the compan y f o u n d e d b y f o r m e r Vo l v o a n d Koenigsegg employee Leif Tufvesson. It is the first real-world Batmobile to be built based on the design seen in the Arkham Knight video game, and features absurdly complex, bespoke carbon fibre bodywork atop its enormous 3.4 metre custom chassis, with 3D printing used to produce the bat-adorned touches.

With room for a driver plus an aspiring Robin, the luxurious interior comprises soft black leather, transparent fabrics, and gold stitching, plus electric lights that illuminate the seats, pedals and floor when the tilting cockpit canopy is opened. Despite its massive size, the car is designed to drive well, with a highly rigid tubular frame, fully independent front and rear suspension with double wishbones connected to coilovers at the rear, and a specially designed aluminium push rods set-up up front. Power comes from a 560hp V10 unit pulled from a Lamborghini Gallardo, and is connected to a paddle shift gearbox controlling the 26 inch wheels. The only thing missing is military grade weaponry!

CRASHING, denting, or scratching a hire car can result in high excess payments, but almost a quarter of holiday drivers who do say the damage wasn’t their fault. Specialist car hire insurance firm iCarhireinsurance has analysed more than 7,000 claims processed between 1 January 2014 and 30 September 2015, with the data revealing that 23 per cent of those pranging a hire care while on holiday said it wasn’t their fault. In fact, three quarters of the deniers said the damage was done while the car was parked, a familiar story here in Spain. Other excuses included vandalism and theft, while others assert that the damage was already there when they collected the vehicle. Finally, a whopping 2 per cent blamed collision with an animal, including deer, dogs, wild boar, and even a kangaroo.
