Alejandro Blanco was yesterday adamant that the ‘King of Clay’ deserves the honour due, not only to his outstanding contribution to Spanish sport, but as an act of solidarity with the Manacor native following unsubstantiated doping allegations. “Spanish sports owe him a lot,” Blanco said. “In Beijing, he was the athlete who was followed the most by the international media and by other athletes. Rafa Nadal took Spanish sports to another level. “I think he should be the flag bearer, especially after how he has been treated. Mobile tourist unit ARENAL will have a mobile tourist information unit available during the summer season that will complement the service provided by the existing tourist office.

The portable office will be stationed along the seafront promenade and will provide tourists with information on points of interest and illustrate appropriate civic behaviour.

Montuiri Cossiers MONTUIRI wants the Council of Mallorca to recognise its iconic â€˜Cossiersâ€™ as part of the Fiestas of Cultural Interest. The Fiestas of Cultural Interest recognises unique traditional celebrations of Mallorcan culture. The Cossiers, a group of seven male dancers, perform traditional dances every year on August 15 during the Montuiri village fiestas.

Man disappears A 78-YEAR-OLD man disappeared around 5pm on Easter Sunday after going out to look for asparagus near the village of Algaida. Rescue services found his

car in the rural road of Sant Miquel Joan, a kilometre away from the town centre. Civil Protection Officers scoured the area and offered assistance to the family.

Bus regulations could be changed A PILOT test will be conducted in two or three bus lines By Sandra Galo THE Mallorca Transport Consortium plans to allow bicycles on city buses and is discussing the possibility of allowing pets to travel with their owners. The Consortium reported that regulations are being drawn from the results of a survey given to 1,300 people from November 2015 to February 2016. The new regulation will allow the transport of bicycles in the hold of intercity buses under the condition that the cyclist is responsible for damage to his or her bike and for damage the bike may cause to the property of others. The Consortium plans on conducting a pilot test in two or three bus lines where pets may travel to decide whether or not full authorisation should be given for the entire network and under what conditions. Once the proposal is presented to transport users, operators, and the Balearic

THE Directorate-General of Consumption of the Balearics headed by Xisco Dalmau has launched a campaign against fraud in the textile industry. The campaign seeks to check products being sold in the region to see if their composition corresponds to the labelling, and to strengthen controls of potentially hazardous materials. The case of a woman, who spent months hospitalised with severe burns after going near a heater while wearing Coole brand trousers bought for â‚Ź8 in Pere Garau, has caused the government to react. Dalmau affirmed that they would focus on textiles being sold in both businesses and by street vendors. He explained

3 Costa megaships dock in Palma port SHIPS bring influx of tourists to capital city By Sandra Galo MORE than 10,000 cruise ship passengers on three Costa megaships docked in the Port of Palma last week. Most of the passengers were Italians who spent the day touring Palma and accounted for the sudden influx of tourists in the Balearic capital city. The cruise ship company took the opportunity to make a presentation aboard one of their ships to more than 30 travel agents explaining the novelties for this year. The agents were able to tour the facilities and were also invited to a meal. Jorge Serrano, commercial director for Costa Spain, explained some of the attractions on board this year including ‘The Voice of the Sea’ talent competition and entertainment for younger passengers featuring Peppa Pig. He also said that the company has added 96 stops in Palma for 2016 and has removed visits to Tunisia and Alexandria due to safety concerns.

Birracruzis event angers parents ACTIVE Families Network (FERYA) and the Federation of Parents Associations (FAPA) have denounced Inca’s authorisation of this year’s Birracruzis celebration. Birracruzis, an event where a large amount of beer is drunk, is to be held on July 23 during Inca’s village fiestas. Parents are objecting to this type of activity which they say promotes the unmoderated drinking of alcohol by young people as well as encourages a type of leisure that directly links fun with alcohol.

The parents are criticising the Inca City Council for giving its approval to the celebration and point out that authorities have the responsibility to create healthy leisure activities and look out for the welfare of children and young people. Representatives of the two associations met with Inca’s City Council to express their discomfort and request that the celebration be modified so as not to have a negative impact on young people and children.

Royals at cathedral mass KING FELIPE and Queen Letizia along with their daughters and the Queen Mother attended mass at Palma Cathedral on Easter Sunday. Attending Easter Sunday mass at Palma’s cathedral is an annual tradition for the royal family. This is the second year that King Felipe and Queen Letizia attended the service as

the reigning king and queen. The gathering of hundreds of people outside the cathedral doors cheering at the arrival of the royals has also become tradition. King Felipe arrived driving his own car with his wife Queen Letizia, their two daughters and the Queen Mother. Javier Salinas, the bishop

of Mallorca, accompanied by members of the council of canons and acolytes received the royal family at the doors of the cathedral. Representatives of the Balearic government were, however, notably absent. The king’s father, Juan Carlos, has not attended since 2014 months before his abdication.

Goats wreaking havoc on rental cars in Victoria ANIMALS are climbing on top of the cars to get to fruit trees By Sandra Galo ALCUDIA has launched an offensive to stop damage caused by goats in the public estate of Victoria. The Balearic goats, although an attractive tourist attraction, are wreaking havoc on tourist rental cars. Goats are climbing on top of cars parked under mulberry trees near the chapel to eat from the trees. The Hunter’s Society and the Alcudia City Council want to close off the area and put in a cattle grid to prevent the animals from entering. Since the chapel is a place of pilgrimage for the residents of Alcudia, the proposed project would also have a special entrance for horses and horse carts. The public estate of Victoria is the largest one of its kind in the Balearic Islands where in 2008 the first big game preserve of the islands was established. The finca is located in the middle of the game preserve so controlling the animals circulating freely about is complicated.

Guardia Civil save ‘dead’ man A GUARDIA CIVIL patrol in Calvia saved the life of a 75-year-old man in cardiac arrest. The incident occurred on March 20 after a Calvia Guardia Civil patrol received word about the possible death of a person in an apartment in the town of Paguera. Once there, a friend of the victim accompanied the officers to an apartment where they found a man sitting openmouthed in an armchair who appeared to be dead. After checking the man and finding a slight pulse, the officers performed CPR for 10 minutes until health services arrived on the scene and, together with the officers, were able to revive the man who was then admitted to Son Espases Hospital.

Several school projects planned MANACOR is finalising projects that will benefit from €2.6 million to be allocated to sustainable investments. Initially, the town plans to invest €400,000 to the improvement and maintenance of different schools located in the area which are under municipal responsibility. Since there are schools which have needs in their infrastructures, they are making a list of emergency actions that need to be taken. The city council has also decided to invest another €400,000 to improve public lighting in the municipality after an audit and reports from the government alerted authorities to the poor state of much of the installations. The improvements would adapt to new regulations and also include greater security measures. The town is again expected to prioritise taking action to improve various streets in the municipality, although neither the streets in question nor the starting date for the work have been made public. Another of the requirements for the use of the €2.6 million is for the money to be invested in all the core areas that come under municipal jurisdiction.

driver of the other car, a grey Peugeot 206. The impact caused serious injuries which resulted in cardiac arrest and health personnel were unable to resuscitate him.

By Sandra Galo HIGH temperatures during the winter months caused grapevines on the island to bud a month early. In a typical year, the earliest variety to sprout is the Chardonnay during the middle or end of March, but this year the grapevines surprised experts with the first buds appearing in February. According to owner of Jose Luis Ferrer bodegas and Denomination of Origin Binissalem President Jose Luis Roses, the foreign Chardonnay sprouted in mid-February and the local variety Moll is about to sprout now. Roses called 2016 an atypical year saying that no-one in the industry ever remembers the vines budding as early as February and the consequences that this early sprouting may have are still unknown. He added that the drop in temperatures in recent weeks has slowed down the phenomenon. What has worried experts most is the

Double Andratx water capacity IMPROVEMENTS planned THE water treatment plant in Andratx will double its capacity thanks to a project to improve the facilities. The pla nt w ill now increase from 2,000 cubic metres per day to 5,000 making it possible to provide service to 35,000 users in A ndra tx, the Port of A ndratx and Sâ€™Arraco and also to respond to increases in demand during the summer. Environmental improvements include reducing the

levels of nitrogen and phosphorus resulting in a higher quality effluent. The Balearic Water and Envi r onm ent al Qual i t y Agency ( ABAQUA) has awarded the job to expand and improve the facilities to Aquambiente Servicios for the amount of â‚Ź3,148,855, excluding VAT. Improvements are expected to begin in two or three m ont hs and wi l l l ast between 18 and 20 months.

Big fight results in injuries POLICE are investigating circumstances surrounding a massive fight between South Americans in the early hours of Saturday, March 26. The fight took place in the Plaza Gomila and resulted in one arrest and one person wounded. Various Local and National Police squads went to the area after being alerted about a fight taking place there involving a large group of South Americans. When those involved saw that the police were coming, they fled. Police, however, managed to detain one of them while a second man had to be treated by health personnel because of a large number of blows to his face. Police have not ruled out further arrests.

Arta in church property dispute LEGAL proceedings are underway to determine ownership By Sandra Galo ARTA City Council has initiated legal proceed i n g s t o d e t e r m in e w h o h a s ownership of the walls and fortified enclosure of Sant Salvador. A year ago, the Bishopric of Mallorca registered properties in the property registry belonging to the church which included properties that, according to Arta, belong to the municipality. Arta has approved the appointment

of a lawyer to file a civil lawsuit and defend municipal interests. Arta Mayor Tolo Gili recognised that both sides have different documentation and that the town hall has always considered the walls of Sant Salvador as municipal property so a judge will have to decide which documentation is valid. A legal service will be hired to review the case and study the documentation. Mayor Gili does not yet know if th e y w ill ta ke the dis pute to the

courts or whether negotiations will be made. The city council has a period of one year before litigation proceedings begin. The mayor admits to having a good relationship with the Bishopric and believes it to be of interest to separate the administrative and legal issues in the ir re la tions hip a nd tha t pe ople should not consider this a reason for conflict between the municipality and the church.

Tel ef oni ca has expanded 3G net wor ks that offer coverage to nearly 100 per cent of the population of the Balearic Islands. This expansion is part of a reinforcement plan to complement the 4G network to be completed before the end of the summer which will reach approximately 90 per cent of the population of the islands incl udi ng Mal l or ca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. To offer better coverage and range, the com-

pany has implemented a plan to provide better mobile phone service in 16 municipalities which include improvements in 4G and 3G coverage as well as the installation of new infrastruct ur es. Mobi l e voi ce services and mobile data have also been optim i sed. Accor di ng t o estimates calculated by the company, usage has increased an average of 50 per cent during the Easter holidays. Telefonica stressed that it has made a substantial investment to improve the capacity of telephone stations in the Balearic municipalities wi t h hi gh l evel s of tourism so as to be able to handle the high demand for coverage during these holidays.

More police to dissuade illegal vending hawkers THE Palma City Council has announced that there will be an increased presence of Local Police in the city to help to control the practice of illegal vending. The Council explained that this would discourage hawkers and at the same time send a clear message to residents and tourists of the illegality of purchasing such products. Councillor for Citizen Security Angelica Pastor explained that illegal trade is under the responsibility of the National Police, but that Local Police would act when they see an offence related to this illegal trade. The announcement was made after Councillor Pastor along with Councillor of Commerce Joana Maria Adrover met with representatives of Pimeco, the Association of Small and Medium Businesses of Mallorca.

Motivated by a report issued by Natura 2000 to authorise the installation of a beach bar and sun beds, the protestors have filed 600 declarations against the new initiative. After reading once again the manifesto declared at the protest held in January, demonstrators gathered on the beach to form a large heart. The platform protested against bars on Son Serra’s beach this pa s t J a nua ry w ith more tha n 5,000 people participating in a human chain on the beach.

Work to the convention centre has been completed WORK on the Palacio de Congresos has finally finished after almost 10 years and an investment of €140 million. The Palma City Council and the Balearic Government held a reception on Tuesday March 29 for the Palma Conference Centre, known as the Palacio de Congresos, and the adjoining hotel which is planned to open sometime between the months of October and December of this year. The president of the Palau de Congresos de Palma and Councillor for Tourism Joana Maria Alcover and Vice President of the Balearic government Biel Barcelo held a press conference

offering information on the Conference centre. Both Alcover and Barcelo expressed their satisfaction that work has finished and indicated that there is anticipation about conferences being held in Mallorca as evidenced by the numerous requests for information received to organise all types of events. The opening of the Centre will continue as planned, affirmed Alcover who also commented on their satisfaction with Acciona’s work on the building. From now until management of the Conference Centre has been awarded to a private firm, the Palacio de Congresos will receive €30,000 each month to meet minimum costs.

Drunk driver detained after crashing into building on the Avenidas A DRUNK driver in Palma who drove onto the pavement and crashed into a building on the Avenidas has been detained for reckless driving. The incident took place in the early hours of Easter Sunday around 5.30am near the in-

tersection of the Avenidas and Paseo Mallorca. The driver lost control of his car and crashed into a tree before hitting the building. According to an eyewitness at the scene, the car had been driving at full speed and pass-

ing cars on the left and right. National and Local Police arrived quickly along with an ambulance. Health professionals attended to the driver testing his level of alcohol which showed that the young man was four times over the legal limit.

EUR weekly currency update Judged by its performance against the USD over the shortened pre-Easter week the euro did badly, losing 1.5 US cents. German business confidence rebounded this month by more than forecast and the three provisional pan-Euroland purchasing managers’ index reading all met or exceeded forecasts. Even so - and with no significant ecostats to help it along - the dollar maintained a steady lead over the euro. It did so because the Federal Reserve mobilised a string of its senior people to talk up expectations of higher interest rates, perhaps as soon as next month. As if to make up for its losses against the dollar the euro easily beat the pound, strengthening by one and three quarter cents. Sterling’s achilles heel is the possibility of Britain’s departure from the EU, a threat that was magnified by the tragic terrorist attacks in Brussels. USD weekly currency update Over the shortened week the dollar was the

top performer among the major currencies, and by a handsome margin. It strengthened by three and three quarter cents against sterling - 2.5% and by a little less than half that, one and a third cents, against the euro. The dollar made steady upward progress even though there were no compelling US economic data to help it along. What it did have, however, was the verbal support of the Federal Reserve. Every day the Fed wheeled out one or more of its senior people to talk up the possibility of higher interest rates. Sterling, meanwhile, was out on its own at the back of the field, held down by fears of Britain’s possible departure from the EU. The risk of that outcome was seen by investors to increase dramatically following the bombings in Brussels. Solidarity effort to help refugees BASIC necessities needed for families By Sandra Galo BINISSALEM is following Inca’s lead to continue Mallorca’s solidarity effort to help Syrian refugees arriving in Greece. Two young women from Binissalem have appealed to residents in the town to contribute to a collection of basic

necessities to help refugee families with newborns and young children. Contributions needed are baby nappies of all sizes, baby formula, baby bottles, sanitary napkins, bar soap and razors as well as cardboard boxes for the shipments. Collection of the products will take place in Binissalem in a garage being

offered by the nuns of L’Assumpcio today, Thursday March 31 and tomorrow, Friday April 1 from 9am to 1pm and 5 to 8pm and on Saturday April 2 from 9am to 1pm. The Binissalem initiative is to support and continue the work started in Inca by Antonia Triguero to help Syrian refugees.

Tourist hit by moped Palma ‘oases’ A YOUNG German tourist is in critical condition after being mowed down by a moped in Arenal. The 27-year-old German national was hit while crossing the street at around 11pm in front of the Megapark. According to initial reports, the young man was inebriated and didn’t look before crossing the road. He was hit by a moped driven by another German, aged 45. Although both men were injured in the accident, the younger man suffered serious injuries while the older man has been given a guarded prognosis.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC magazine has published an article about the Plaça de l’Olivar and Santa Catalina markets in its digital edition in Spanish. The report praises the varied gastronomic offers at the two markets calling them ‘two culinary oases’ in the city of Palma and praising the dozens of stalls with local and international dishes of excellent quality.

PEOPLE encouraged to ride their bike every day in April THE Palma City Council has joined the initiative ’30 days of biking’ proposed by the association Biciutat. The initiative encourages people to ride their bikes every day in April as a means of transport within the city. In a press release, the government stated that the mobility area through the Municipal Society of Parking and Projects will make 30 bicycles available to the public for those who are interested in joining the initiative. The ‘30 days of biking’ is an initiative that was born in Minneapolis, USA in 2010 and has since spread around the globe with the city of Palma joining in this year. Those interested in participating must subscribe to the online manifesto at http://30diasenbici.com and pledge to ride their bikes every day during the month of April and show proof of the commitment by posting on Twitter and Instagram. NATURA 2000 has given authorisation to around 100 seasonal facilities including beach bars, sun beds, and fixed straw parasols in several municipalities. The areas affected fall under the municipalities of Santa Margalida, Alcudia, Pollença and Santanyi. Some of the projects, however, will have to go through an environmental impact assessment evaluation and then wait for a verdict from the Balearic Committee on the Environment (CMAIB). Numerous initiatives pertaining to stand-up surf or paddle surf have been autho-

rised in Mallorca as well as Menorca and Ibiza since it is an activity which respects the environment. However, jet skis in the Port of Alcudia will have to go through an environmental impact evaluation. Driver runs over police officer A DRIVER has been arrested after running over a Local Police officer in Llucmajor and fleeing the scene. The incident occurred at dawn on Easter Sunday while two Local Police officers were patrolling the area near a concert taking place in the vicinity. The officers went to check on a driver who was revving up the engine of his car. Several people warned the officers that the individ-

ual appeared to be highly inebriated. When the officers approached the vehicle, the driver suddenly reversed hitting an obstacle behind the car. One of the officers took the opportunity, while the driver was temporarily distracted, to try and take away his keys. The driver however, spat on the officer and then put the car in first gear and accelerated running over the officer and causing him various bruises.

Brussels attacks increase security ALERT level maintained but protective measures raised By Sandra Galo SPANISH Delegate to the Balearic Islands, Teresa Palmer, affirmed that there would be increased security at local airports following the recent terror attacks in Brussels. Palmer gave her announcement after a moment of silence for the victims of the terrorist attacks. She explained that although authorities have decided to increase the level of protection at Spanish airports, this does not mean that there is a higher risk of terrorist attacks at the airports but rather they are preventative measures. Ports, metro stations and other places where crowds gather will also have increased security. The Spanish delegate emphasised her “absolute condemnation, disgust and revulsion at the horrific attacks in Brussels.” She also stated that the government has agreed to maintain the Counterterrorism Alert Level 4 which was established in June 2015 after several terrorist attacks in Tunisia, France and Kuwait.

By Sandra Galo NATURA PARC located in the municipality of Santa Eugenia has now added two felines from a zoo in Son Servera. The two cats, a lioness and a leopardess, were seized from the zoo in the municipality of Son Servera this past February by the Council of the Environment, Agriculture and Fisheries. Three cats were originally taken but one of them, a lioness, has since died. Although there was a request to transfer the cats off the island, authorities have decided that it is better for them to stay in Mallorca and have given their care over to Natura Parc. Director of Natura Parc, Mariano Mas explained the animals were in bad shape citing that the 19-year-old leopardess has lumps on her body. Mas commented that the park is building facilities for the animals to be well cared for. He added that Natura Parc is a recuperation centre as well as a shelter

Deceased’s brother released A YOUNG Moroccan national detained after the death of his brother has been released after testifying in Manacor. Judicial sources indicated that he is charged with reckless homicide. The incident took place last weekend. An 18-year-old entered Manacor Hospital with a large cut on his back. Because of the severity of the wound, he was sent to Son Espasas Hospital in Palma where he later died. National Police launched an investigation where they met with the brother of the deceased and conducted a search of the home. The brother of the deceased explained that they had quarrelled and that during the argument the 18year-old hit his back against a glass cabinet causing the glass to pierce his back.

1,500 parking places for Es Trenc THE Council for the Environment, Agriculture and Fisheries has presented a draft bill for the Es Trenc-Salobrar Natural Park providing for the regulation of moorings, bars and parking. The government believes that 1,500 parking spaces should be allotted for the Es

Trenc beach. According to Councillor Vicenç Vidal, the aim of the law is to have the capacity to manage the natural space which is suffering deterioration. He expects the project to be approved by the government council at the beginning of May to then start

the parliamentary procedure. During a press conference, the necessity to reconcile tourism and environmental protection was emphasised along with the need to have an integrated management of the area. The deterioration facing the area due to the massive influx of beachgoers was also highlighted as was the uncontrolled access and inadequacy of beach cleaning. Regarding parking in the area, Vidal stressed that it is not about how many parking spaces there should be, but rather how many quality beachgoers there should be on the beach. He also highlighted the need to ‘dignify, value and protect’ the area.

The Franciscan Sisters’ property located in Calle Doctor Esteva 8 in Son Servera will be used as student accommodation for local and

foreign students of archaeology, geology and others involved in the investigation and excavation of archaeological sites located in the municipality. Mayor of Son Servera Natalia Troya and Councillor for Roads and Works Miquel Espases thanked the sisters for their willingness to collaborate with the town hall and facilitate the students’ stay.

Palma Film Office PALMA Film Office handled 151 requests for filming in 2015. The office manages and processes the documentation necessary to carry out filming projects in Palma. Its mission is to promote the audio-visual industry in the city of Palma. During 2015, the office received 54 requests for photography, 50 for documentaries, television programmes and video clips, 37 for advertising and commercials, and five for press releases of the city of Palma and PalmaActiva. Easter rise for occupancy rate of ‘refugios’ THE Council of Mallorca’s ‘refugios’ (lodgings) have reached an occupancy rate of 95 per cent for the Easter holidays.This year ’s occupancy represents an increase of 2 per cent compared to last year. During the school holidays from March 23 to April 4, just over 84 per cent of the beds of these lodgings have been filled

representing a 6 per cent rise compared to 2015. The ‘refugio’ which has seen occupancy rise most during these dates is Tossals Verds which went from 50.5 per cent last year to 91.4 per cent for this year’s holidays. Son Amer has also shown a significant increase in occupancy from 79.8 per cent to 84.1 per cent.

In a recent ceremony, Deputy Mayor Manuel Cabrera was placed in charge of unveiling the names of the different streets. The streets are named after important people who have contributed to the cultural and social identity of Calpe over the years, including the Parish Priest Francisco Bernabe, the writer Pablo Pineda, and the architect Ricardo Bofill. The Calpe Municipal Music Band also now has a street in their honour, and they were indeed present at the ceremony to celebrate the momentous occasion.

Since then the chain, which at one time was the largest retailer of light fittings in the UK, has continued to struggle and its investors have had to ask creditors to agree to reduce the rental costs of its 164 stores, which was agreed in principle for a number of them. It is assumed, however, that the FBI will not wish to save them any time or money.

Group to sell large stake in its Chinese business AMERICAN owner of a range of fast food chains including KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, the appropriately named Yum Brands, is in talks with various financial institutions about selling a significant stake in its Chinese business. It was only six months ago that the company which had previously been part of PepsiCo, announced that it intended to incorporate its operation in China and to have it quoted on the Chinese stock exchange. The total company has a market value estimated at $32 billion (€29 billion), but

it is reported that it is in discussions to sell 20 per cent of the Chinese business, once devolved, for as much as $10 billion (€9 billion), even though sales have dipped recently due to the downturn in the Chinese economy and a scandal over some of the meat used by the group. Despite these problems, shares in the parent have gone up in value due to this speculation and a Yum spokesman is reported to have said: “We continue to make good progress since we announced the transaction separating Yum and Yum China.”

Brexit finances continue to confuse CONFLICTING opinions from so-called experts are hitting the news AS the war of words over the Brexit begins to hot up, conflicting opinions from so-called experts are hitting the news on an almost daily basis. Recent contributors include the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and credit agency Moody’s, with one saying that the Brexit would be a financial disaster and the other being of the opinion that it wouldn’t make a huge amount of difference to the economy. The CBI commissioned a report from hugely influential financial analysts PwC (Price Waterhouse Coopers), which says the Brexit will cost the United Kingdom €130 billion and up to one million jobs. General Director of the CBI, Carolyn Fairbairn endorsed the findings of the report which effectively saw no financial benefits to the UK, apart from the cancellation of its payments to Brussels, and this would be off-

High Speed 2 AMERICAN company CH2M, the lead company in a consortium which includes a Spanish group, has won a potential 10-year contract said to be worth €450 million to provide engineering and construction support for the first phase of the High Speed 2 railway project, which is to run from London to Birmingham. CH2M will work with Spanish company SENER and Atkins to provide programme and construction management support, and engineering services. It is intended that the American firm will provide programme management services, SENER will provide expertise on high-speed rail, while Atkins will provide engineering services as part of the contract. The group hopes it will obtain additional work when future contracts are put out to tender as the overall cost of the project is expected to run into many billions of euros.

UK sugar tax IN theory the decision announced in the budget to add a tax onto soft drinks with high sugar contents was a brave one, but the government may find itself ‘holding a tiger by the tail’, as various groups consider whether they will take action to try and change this decision. Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver is overjoyed by the news, but others have criticised the chancellor for not making the tax cover a wider range of fast foods and chocolates which also contribute to childhood obesity. On the other hand, UK representatives of the beverage industry are considering their position, as although they have until 2018 to either reduce the sugar content of the drinks or see the tax imposed, they may decide to take the UK government to Brussels as they consider the imposition of this two tier tax to be unreasonable. With the weight of some of the biggest corporations in the world such as Coca Cola behind them, and having seen Finland being forced to reverse a tax on ice cream, financial interest may conquer the search for a healthy future.

A FEW months ago, on my Facebook page someone posted a photo of Donald Trump. The caption underneath invited the reader to describe the man in one word. Most of the words that followed were just about unprintable, even in this column! My personal contribution was, ‘underrated.’ I am delighted that today, my observation is proven to be utterly correct. Why? Simply because we are on the brink of allout war! I have no idea how this man would handle the American economy, civil rights, or indeed most any other American malady. In fact he may be a disaster, but in a war, he’s the man I want on my side. Churchill was a useless peacetime prime minister, but as a combat leader he was ruthless, stubborn, and arrogantly dedicated to victory at almost any cost.

I am also convinced that the American people are finally realising that unless they elect a truly patriotic president, with the balls to really go for it, freedom, democracy and culture as they know it, will soon be a dim memory. In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man

I KNOW I’m a grumpy old sod but the world around me doesn’t half make it easy. I have written about my car before and people spoke to me and said it was something that ticked them off too. But this one has given me the serious hump. I got in my car after being away for two weeks and two warning lights came on, one saying ‘code 82’ and the other was a filter light. So having three years warranty and three years free servicing, I wasn’t too worried. I looked up ‘code 82’ in the handbook and it just said ‘change oil soon’. I thought that was strange as I’ve only done 18,000 miles in two and a half years. I take it to my local garage where I purchased the car, who now don’t sell them as Chevrolet has pulled out of Europe. The mechanic then proceeds to tell me I’ve been driving the car wrongly and it’s all my fault and it’s not covered by god knows how many warranties I have on the car. What? How can I be driving it wrongly? It’s a fully-automatic turbo diesel and, for

your information young man, I’ve been driving for 50 years and never had an accident! What came next left me flabbergasted like never before. He says I can’t turn the engine off, I mustn’t drive it out of the garage because if I do and I quote ‘you will break the engine. We have to change the engine oil immediately!’ Wait - it gets better. He asks me if when I stop, the engine fan carries on after I turn the engine off? “Yes, it does sometimes.” “Oh. Well if it does, start it up again and take it for a run getting it up over 3,000 rpm.” “Are you loco?” “I’ve just got home why would I want to go out again?” “You have to take the car to Malaga once a week reaching 4000rpm. Don’t use the automatic gearbox.” “Whoa, whoa hombre, what are you talking about? Why on earth would I want to do that?” “Because these cars, and many others, have this problem with big diesel engines.” I just couldn’t believe what I was hearing. That just doesn’t make any sense that the car I paid extra for to have an automatic gearbox I have to drive manually, at speeds that break the law, to a place I don’t want to go to at least once a week! “Oh and it’s going to cost you €207 too.” I now have to phone GM Europe and find out exactly what’s going on because surely this can’t be right. I’ll let you know!

Crackdown on wearing seatbelts LAW states all occupants of a vehicle must wear one AS part of a new series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

STATISTICS: The wearing of a seatbelt can reduce the risk of death by 80 per cent. DURING the recent crackdown on the wearing of seatbelts and child restraint systems carried out by police, a total of 2,728 people were caught not wearing one. Irresponsible adults allowed 167 children under 12 years of age to travel without the appropriate safety device, 46 of them in the front seat. Of all of those people found to be not wearing a seatbelt, 74 per cent of them were driving on conventional roads. The law states that all occupants within a vehicle must wear a seatbelt or restraining device appropriate to their height and weight. The rule of one seatbelt, one passenger must also be adhered to. Many modern cars for example are only fitted with two seatbelts in the

back, and so, irrespective of the width, only two passengers can be carried on that seat. During this week-long campaign, a total of 379,246 vehicles were checked, some from the air and others from the roadside or at checkpoints. The Pegasus-equipped helicopters were out in force, with many road users now being aware of their power, as there was an increase in the number of vehicle occupants who decided to ‘buckle up’ having spotted the helicopters in the air. Statistically, the wearing of a seatbelt can reduce the risk of death in a vehicle collision by 80 per cent and although adults can make the decision for themselves, the importance of ensuring children comply is paramount.

Better off outside HELLO Leapy, I have lived for about 30 years in Belgium and Holland and I understand why the people in the UK think they will be better off outside the EU. One of the reasons is that ever since the UK became members there has been constant criticism in the press and TV. Some of it valid but an awful lot of rubbish and scaremongering. For me the EU is a bit like communism. A good idea ruined by politicians. If they had stuck to being simply a trade organisation it would have been better, but politicians have to get involved which has led to some really stupid ideas, like how vegetables should look. What makes you think that things would be better if the UK leaves the

country for the sake of the expats living in the EU, and that’s including the pensioners in Spain. It would appear that Spain would be worse off

DEAR Editor, Another coastal landmark is to disappear this Friday. The beautiful tower beside the N332 at Punta Prima is to be demolished after standing there so majestically for more than 160 years. It was built from pieces of stone of various shapes and sizes all held together with lime and shingle, long before cement, concrete and blocks but that’s progress, to make way for a new commercial centre which will also take in Cala Mosca. There will be a centre with 180 shops, a bowling alley, a cinema, a medical centre and also stations for police, fire and ambulance – this should please the Orihuela Costa residents. Explosive specialists will place small charges at ground level so that the tower will collapse into a crumpled heap of rubble, which will be hauled away by a fleet of trucks and used for extending the harbour pier in order to accommodate larger ships for carrying salt. The police and proteccion civil will close one lane of the N332 dual carriageway for this work to be carried out. The tower is scheduled to collapse at 11am and the N332 is expected to be back to normal by 1pm. As this has been kept very low profile the police do not anticipate many sightseers.

I DO not believe that the people who are against bull fighting and eat meat are hypocrites. I abhor factory farming and have not eaten meat in 30 years. But many people are ignorant of the horrors and misery suffered by farm animals and others cannot afford organic meat, eggs, etc. I do eat chicken but always try to buy organic. More and more small farmers are producing eggs from ‘happy hens’ - a lovely idea to advertise. Everything has to die and I believe that if farm animals have a good free life and have a quick humane death (and not kept in crates so that their meat is white to please the palate of some uncaring wimp, and geese also have space to walk about and not force fed, sometimes with their feet nailed to the ground so that it cannot move and the greedy farmer can get an ounce more of foie gras), is acceptable to some. Nothing is perfect in this life. We do what we can. As usual, it is all to do with money and power. The difference between the two is the ‘corrida’, bulls are tortured to death, in the name of ‘cultural interest’ and enormous amounts of money are moved around, including subsidies paid by the taxpayer each year, which I have just discovered, and the politician gets his votes while the farm animal is at least to feed people, most times after a short miserable life. EU? When I look at the state the UK is in now with the NHS on its knees, public service, units like firemen, police and nurses pay and conditions being far short of what they should be. These things are not due to the EU but to UK politicians, both parties are guilty. I don’t favour one party over another but I think two of the last lot should be in the tower for treason. Scaremongers HERE we go again scaremongering the expats living in Spain. All the measures George Peretz QC outlines that can be implemented by Spain on the British living in Spain, could be implemented by Britain in the opposite direction against the 900,000 Spaniards currently living in the UK. Let’s be honest the majority living in Spain are pensioners costing Spain nothing, spending their pensions and

paying taxes into the Spanish treasury. As for the health care we all know that unless a pensioner you get nothing out of the Spanish health system unless you have contributed, not so in Britain. According to your newspaper March 17-23, 2016 (issue 1602), Britain pays Spain a whopping €290 million so medical treatment is not given to pensioners free. Whereas the NHS is being constantly abused by millions of EU citizens to the point it is on the verge of collapse. How can we expect Britain to be forced to continue to sacrifice the

Import tax DEAR B Kendall, re your comments in issue 1603 of this paper. Coming out of the EU is about import tax not export tax. If the UK is trading outside of the EU trading zone then the UK government would place tax on all imports from the EU. The EU would in-turn place import tax on all imports from the UK. Import tax is only one of the problems that UK exporters would face. They would have to agree trading agreements with every one of the 27 countries in the EU and 20 countries outside of the EU, a massive job. Also with regard to your comments regarding people that have made their life in Spain. Expats who have made their lives legally in Europe do not need to worry they will be protected by the Vienna Convention of treaties 1969. Please do not take any notice of David Cameron’s comments trying to throw doubt on this treaty, it is just to try and influence your vote and is not true. After all if in doubt you can read it for yourself. What would be the situation after a vote to come out? Regarding UK citizens wanting to move to the EU we do not know. David, Murcia

Investor behaviour and opportunities MOST times in life, when we are looking to buy something we view falling prices as a positive factor. If we want to buy a new TV, furniture etc, we often wait for the sales to get better value for money. If we are planning to buy property, we will take advantage of falling property prices to make the purchase then. When it comes to equities, however, many people behave very differently. Falling prices make them fearful and they refrain from buying shares at that time - they may even sell the ones they have. Inversely, they see rising prices as a good thing and buy shares when prices are high. Emotions play a large part in investor behaviour. As the prices of an asset rises, investors are attracted by the returns they have seen and buy this asset. However, if you have ever seen the ‘cycle of market emotions’ graphic, the point of ‘euphoria’, when prices are highest, is also the ‘point of maximum investment risk’ when it is most likely that prices will start to come down. So many investors find they have bought when prices were highest. Likewise, as markets fall investors

People with money to invest sit on the side lines, waiting until they feel confident that prices are back on an upward path. However, when markets are lowest, the point of ‘despondency’ is also the ‘point of maximum financial opportunity’. Although stockmarket volatility can be uncomfortable, it can bring value back to the markets and create opportunities. If you have capital to invest, share prices falling can be a good time to buy. You can potentially buy more shares with

your money; shares that will rise in price once the downturn ends. If you are still concerned the market may fall further - even though it could instead rise - you could apply the principle of ‘pound cost averaging’ (or euro or dollar), where spread out entering the market over time. The principle notes that if you invest, say, a third of your money on one date, a third two months later and the balance two months after that, the average of your investment will provide comfort that you are not unduly exposed to the risk of the market falling the day after you buy and a better opportunity having arisen. As history shows, markets always recover eventually. Declines over the last five decades have been followed by upturns, which on average have been longer lasting and with gains larger than the losses preceding them. What we cannot know in a downturn is when markets will hit the bottom. If you keep waiting you will probably miss the upswing, often

when price increases are sharpest. Do not risk waiting too long. Make your investment but be prepared for further short-term volatility and to hold your investment for the longer-term. We do not generally advocate ‘timing the markets’ - it is ‘time in the market’ that counts however this does not mean that those with capital to invest should ignore the opportunities presented by falling markets. If you are invested for the longterm your portfolio should ride out temporary market volatility. A chart from Blackrock* shows how a £10,000 hypothetical investment in the FTSE All-Share Index would have grown to £71,602 in the 25 years 19892014. This was in spite of events like September 11, the subprime crisis, Lehman Brothers collapse and European sovereign debt crisis. As always, your investment strategy and choices should be dictated by your specific personal circumstances, aims, time horizon and an objective assessment of

your attitude to risk. It is critical to review your portfolio on a regular basis and adjust the strategy accordingly. Family Matters HERE’S the thing. I read this week about children spending less time outdoors than prisoners. Can that be true? Given that I first saw it when someone shared a Daily Mail article online I could imagine that the truth has been massaged, but even so, children have to go outside in playgrounds at school don’t they? The study from the Play In Balance report by Persil’s Dirt Is Good campaign said 18 per cent of children never play outside at any point. ‘One in 10 mothers and fathers have never been on an outdoor adventure with their child.’ Is that more to do with the motivation of the parents than anything particularly preventing them from going outside and getting involved, or is it to do with our work life balances being so out of kilter that there is literally no daylight left in which to do things with our offspring? The kids are still playing, but on

CHILDREN: Are still playing, but on computers indoors rather than outside. computers, or indoors in less adventurous circumstances. This has led to a response from many people about how, in their ‘day’ this was not the case, we were thrown out of the front door at 8am with a cheese sandwich in our pocket and not let back in until teatime. The big question, I guess, is

would this have a negative effect on children long term, or is it just us oldsters freaking out about how we think things should be versus how they actually are? The people who participated in this report probably didn’t remember the TV programme ‘Why Don’t You?’ which was specifically aimed at

me and my little brothers to inspire us to stop watching the TV and go and make spaceships out of toilet rolls. Things haven’t changed THAT much, in my opinion. You have to encourage children to do things, they need their mums and dads to be passionate about hobbies, these things are

contagious in my experience. The fact is that life, and (some) times, have changed. Although I have been known to send my daughter out with the dog on a mission (yesterday she went to our village chemist on her own to get some sunscreen). I send her out with a phone, an itinerary and a clear understanding of when she is expected back home. That is very different to the way I grew up when we did disappear for hours on end, fall in rivers, come home without shoes, end up on the wrong side of the motorway, and other tales of disaster which perhaps one day you will know about. I wouldn’t send my daughter outside to play randomly, she would be going to see a friend, whose parents would also know about the plan, or she would be going to a prearranged date at the stables, or with my Dad to go sailing. Apart from lacking spontaneity what’s wrong with that? It’s another example of us taking advantage of what Mallorca has on offer, but done with a deliberate focus to keep her off You Tube but not out of my hair. What do you think? mallorcamatters.com

He lives with his husband and two children. 10. Tim Cook Following Steve Jobs as CEO of Apple, Tom Cook has not actively come out but has graced the top of Out magazine’s most powerful list of gay people for three years. He is currently fighting against the American government and their demands to bypass security protections on the iPhone.

I HAVE just returned from two rather chilly but nevertheless satisfying weeks in the Mother Country. The focus of my visit was to meet up with my five grandsons who I had not seen for some considerable time and with my daughter who, on reflection, should carry the married name of Fry. This remark will only have significance for people of a certain vintage who remember a particular chocolate bar manufactured in Bristol. Each of the boys has a different work schedule, so our get-togethers were spread over more than a week, but at least this meant that instead of one large gathering, we could take our time to catch up and generally enjoy each

Two days later, the same gentleman was in attendance behind another glass of beer with the same unnerving stare levelled in my direction. But again, on the arrival of my second grandson, he was soon forgotten amid much hugging and joyful acknowledgements of each other ’s presence. I SAW a cartoon on the internet this weekend which showed a map of the World, indicating the scale of interest and worry that we in Europe have with regards to suicide bombs and explosions caused by terrorists around the world and it does seem remarkably accurate. The basic idea is that the closer to home the bomb is then the more worried we are and the more coverage it receives in the international press. The map is entitled ‘Tragic World Map’ and divides the world into five differently coloured areas so that Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the USA and Western Europe are all the same colour and carry the punch line ‘Oh my God how terrible.’ Next come, India, Israel, Latin America, Mexico, South Africa and

Taking their toll WITH Spain so anxious to attract tourists to the country, it does seem rather strange that the toll roads should be allowed to increase prices during the high tourist season. This means that overseas visitors, as well as the thousands who descend on the Costas from Madrid, suddenly have to pay considerably extra for the privilege of driving on a decent road which was funded in the main by the European Union. A simple journey from Malaga to Estepona normally costs €7.85 but for Semana Santa and the four summer months this shoots up to €12.40, to cover just 80 kilometres at a cost of 15.5 cents per kilometre. If you are travelling further afield then the price goes up as well, and although on their website it is suggested that regular travellers can save up to 50 per cent on their journeys, the truth is that that saving only occurs after you have undertaken 36 journeys and paid by credit or debit card on each occasion. There is also a possibility for regular travellers to ‘freeze’ the price hike provided they undertake 15 journeys a month also paying by card, but not everyone wants to do that and many prefer to pay cash. They used to charge extra in the Christmas period as well but in an anti-scrooge measure, that seems to have been done away with. It does however, beg the question of what the justification is for increasing prices and placing more strain on the other free and often illmaintained roads.

In the same week that I saw this map, we had the dreadful bombing in Brussels which grabbed headlines for days on end, but within a week either side of that there were 65 killed in Lahore, Pakistan when a suicide bomber picked an area in a park near a playground where mainly women and children were killed. In Iraq, another bomb was exploded at a football ceremony with 17 footballers aged between 10 and 16 killed as were another 15 in the crowd. Favourite city for Boko Horan terrorists saw 20 killed by a mosque in Maiduguri which seems to be hit on almost a monthly basis whilst in neighbouring Cameroon, two girls, who may have been kidnapped by that group in Nigeria two years ago were discovered before they could blow themselves up. the day, is linked to a higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome, which covers a range of conditions, such as high blood pressure and cholesterol and high blood sugar, which can all raise a person’s risk of heart disease. The findings, which were presented at the American

College of Cardiology’s 65th annual scientific session showed napping for 40 minutes or longer was tied to a steep increase in the risk of being diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. The researchers evaluated data from 21 studies involving 307,237 people. Those people who slept

for less than 40 minutes during the day did not show any increased risk for the conditions, but beyond 40 minutes and the risk rose sharply. A siesta for 90 minutes increased metabolic syndrome risk by as much as 50 per cent, as did being excessively tired during the day.

Dear Mr Bennett, As you say, the normal pulse rate for a healthy adult should be between 60 and 100 beat s per minute, although when some heart diseases are pr esent , i t shoul d be maintained below 60. Although pacemakers do not tend to be faulty, it can sometimes happen and one of the signs of this is an increased pulse rate. WHAT is it about some of today’s politicians, bankers, charity bosses and other heads of organisations? Take MEPs for example. They can claim £120,000 annually in expenses without providing ‘real proof’ of how the money is spent, because EU officials don’t want to saddle them with an ‘administrative burden’ which would hamper their freedom. The EU expenses chief admitted he had never seen the bank accounts of long-serving Labour MEP Peter Skinner, who is accused of using his expenses to pay £10,000 to his ex-wife. As for banks, the Royal Bank of Scotland paid its chief executive Ross McEwan £3.8 million for 2015, double the amount he made the year before, as the bank reported its eighth consecutive year of losses since it was bailed out by the taxpayer in 2008. Its total

It concluded that his dreadful behaviour was noted many times but not once formally reported or investigated and that the BBC ‘as a corporate body’, had no knowledge of the sex crimes being committed over many decades by one of its most prominent celebrities. Is it just the BBC that has put its best interests before the protection of children? Haven’t we heard similar claims about the Church and politicians? Replica of Magellan’s ship to visit Port of Alcudia ORIGINAL Nao Victoria was the first ship to travel around the world in the 16th century A REPLICA of the Nao Victoria ship sailed by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan doc k e d i n t h e Po r t o f A lc u d ia o n M a rc h 30. Constructed in 1991, the Nao Victoria is the first historical replica to circumnavigate the world. During the years 2004 to 2006 she set sail from the port of Sevilla travelling 26,894 miles and visiting 17 countries before returning to the Spanish port. The original Nao Victoria was the first ship to travel around the world in the 16th century. This replica was built for the Seville Expo in 1992. It is owned by the Nao Victoria Foundation and offers guided tours. The ship will be docked in Alcudia until April 3.

Since welcoming Scrut to their home a few months ago, Jane and Duncan have worried about having to leave him when they return to England to visit family. She will need a full health check including X-ray, hip scored, her eyes need to be checked

and she needs to be wormed and vaccinated. Many of these points cost money but it’s necessary when planning for a health litter. - While you’re waiting for her to come into season, read all the books you can on your particular breed, breeding, whelping and rearing young puppies. - Start saving all the newspapers and have your friends and relatives do the

same. You will need all the newspapers you can get your hands on! - Have a whelping box built. - When your bitch comes into season contact the stud owner and you will be advised when to take your bitch to him. The possibility raises intriguing moral questions including over whether humans will treat live animals differently if we suddenly form emotional bonds with robot or virtual pets. No longer needing to take responsibility for the health of our pets could make artificial animals much more appealing to a certain demographic.

ICONIC yacht designer Ed Dubois who set up Dubois Naval Architects in 1977 died suddenly at the age of 64 on March 24 following an illness in 2015 from which it was thought that he had recovered. His career spanned decades and he was known for his passion and commitment to his many clients throughout the world for whom he designed many spectacular yachts and motor boats of the highest standard. Desert destiny JEREMY CLARKSON and his former Top Gear co-presenter Richard Hammond are in the process of filming their very own motoring show, which will debut on Amazon Prime in the near future. The two have been pictured filming in desert near Marrakech at the same studio which filmed Game of Thrones. The title of the upcoming show is yet to be revealed but is certain to feature fast cars and mayhem. Clarkson is finally back on the motor circuit after his controversial dismissal from the BBC, and the natural question is whether his new show will do battle with a newly-revamped Top Gear for ratings.

Johan Cruyff One of the world’s greatest-ever footballers and coach, Johan Cruyff, died in Spain, last Thursday, aged 68. The Dutchman scored 405 goals in 711 senior appearances for club and country between 1964 and 1984, playing for Ajax, Barcelona, Levante, Feyenoord, in America and Holland. He won 48 international caps and helped his country reach the 1974 World Cup final. Then, as a coach/manager, he guided Ajax and Barcelona to European glory. An early exponent of ‘Total Football,’ Johan won the Ballon d’Or three times (1971-73-74) and was the recipient of 36 medals overall, 22 as a player. I had the pleasure of meeting him twice and now, I say, to a truly great football man, R.I.P.

Eubank Sr lauded for corner advice THE boxing world is rallying support for Nick Blackwell after the deposed British middleweight champion was placed in a medically induced coma following his TKO defeat to Chris Eubank Jr in the 10th round of their Championship fight last Saturday, March 26. The 25-year-old from Wiltshire was taken out on a stretcher wearing an oxygen mask. On Sunday Robert Smith, British Boxing Board of Control Secretary, said “I spoke to one of the doctors this morning and he said there is a bleeding of the brain. “He’s in intensive care, he’s in an induced coma and he is resting and being looked after by the experts.” There is an unavoidable sense of fate surrounding the events, although it should be made clear that there is every chance Blackwell will emerge safely and soundly from his plight. Chris Eubank Jr is the son, out to

make a name for himself, of famous British fighter Chris Eubank Sr who did battle with Nigel Benn in a series of brutal bouts in the early 1990’s. By his own admission, Eubank Senior’s personality, fighting style and career changed dramatically after he left Londoner Michael Watson in a 40-day coma and with permanent disabilities after their tragic 1991 fight. “If the referee doesn’t stop it, then I don’t know what to tell you. But I will tell you this: if he doesn’t stop it and we keep beating him like this, he is getting hurt and, if it goes to a decision, why didn’t the referee stop the fight? I don’t get why.” Those are the prophetic words spoken by Eubank Sr, now head coach to his son, in between rounds, as commentators and spectators alike were awed by Blackwell’s bravery, but disturbed by the unnec-

essary length of the beating. Eubank Sr also instructed his son to aim for the body, although this also could have been a tactical ploy. Referee Victor Loughlin will come under criticism for failing to stop the bout earlier, as will Blackwell’s corner, but the difficulty in apportioning blame is that in reality Blackwell fell victim to his own bravery. Though suffering a beating, he remained competitive to the very end and was the defending champion after all. Thoughts and prayers have been expressed for Blackwell’s speedy recovery on Twitter by Eubank Jr, Lennox Lewis, Tyson Fury and George Groves among others. The Eubanks have since been doing a wide variety of television interviews expressing their empathy for Blackwell, but defending the sport against a barrage of hysterical criticism.
