By Sam Croft Equality is something we fight for, not something we are given. It is a hard-earned reward which is achieved only through perseverance and the courage to stand up and ask for something greater than ourselves. Sometimes through trial by fire, and sometimes through heartrending sacrifice, but always with a keen eye to the future and the never-ending possibilities that exist just over the horizon. In a world where women are subjugated, abused, and devalued on a daily basis, a call for global unity like International Women’s Day on March 8 represents a much-needed reminder of the almost otherworldly power of determination and a common objective. Not just women, but people of all ages and nationalities are given an annual opportunity to come together, raise their voices, and petition for an end to the gender inequality that runs rampant throughout the world. Vicious vandals der equality is about to burn its way through the area, and one of the very first out of the gate is Rincon’s Race for Equality on March 5. The event, a five kilometre run, is also a fundraiser, with proceeds going towards the Malaga Association for Multiple Sclerosis. The race is scheduled for an 11am start and participation costs €2. Those interested can register after 9am on the day of the race in the Tourism Office, thereby showing their support for both

global gender equality and a disease that affects over 2 million people worldwide. And Rincon is not alone. Various other towns in Axarquia and the Costa Tropical have also loaded their cultural programming this month with activities revolving around International Women’s Day. In nearby Motril for example, the programme comes with the name ‘One Day of Celebration… 365 of Equality’: a fitting title considering that although the fight for gender

equality has come a long way, the battle is far from over. Anyone in Axarquia looking to show up and get involved in the fight should consult their local town hall or visit their town council’s website.
