The bonfire of the centuries DRAGONS and demons run amok as Palma parties

by Matthew Elliott Mallorca’s biggest festival came to a fiery climax as thousands of partygoers lined the streets of Palma to celebrate the Revelta San Sebastia.

Bracing the brutal cold in the hopes of being toasted by the monstrous Drac de na Coca dragon, Mallorcans turned out in massive numbers in carefree defiance of recent terrorist warnings.

Eight squares across the capital were packed with revellers rejoicing amid the flames of dozens of bonfires and hundreds of barbecues.

Giants, bagpipers and drummers were to be seen as the festival recalled the Celtic roots of ancient Iberia as modern jazz and rock deafened the night sky.

Well over 40,000 people descended

upon the squares on January 19 alone to witness the key attraction of Palma’s legendary dragon breathing fire upon the Plaza Major at the pinnacle of the event.

The celebrations are by no means over and will last until January 23 with exhi-

bitions, music and parades culminating in the unmissable Correfoc fire run on Saturday.

Poisoned by fumes THE BODY of a 70-year-old man was found by the owner of a cottage in Santa Maria on January 18.

It would appear that he had fallen asleep in a badly ventilated room after lighting a brasero (a brazier) which burnt almond shells and it is suspected that he died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

COCA COLA: Has to compensate the workers.

By Steve Walsh THE Coca-Cola Company in Mallorca has had the fizz taken out of their bottle this week as the courts ruled in favour of 64 workers whose right to strike was violated.

The judgement against the multinational

drinks company was that they would pay a total of €115,000 to the 64 staff who took strike action against staff cuts at the beginning of February 2014, and as a result, Coca Cola simply replaced them.

They have now agreed that this was an illegal substitution of staff and have decided

to compensate the 64 workers of the Palma bottling plant with an amount totalling €115,000. Each worker will receive sums between €336 and €2,800 for violation of their right to go on strike.

Friday January 22 is ‘crunch time’ when he meets with the PP, PSOE and Podemos and unless he can persuade the leftist parties to bury their differences, it may well be that upon receipt of advice from the Speaker he will appoint Mariano Rajoy to try to run a minority government which will then only be able to function if he receives a vote of confidence from other members of the house.

Catalan backdown New constitution first THE NEW first minister of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont admitted in an interview on TV3 that a 48 per cent share of the vote did not give him a mandate to call for independence. He therefore intends to create a Catalan constitution which would allow for a referendum on the matter within 18 months.

A REBELLION against plans to build beach bars on the famous Son Serra de Marina sand gained traction this week as roughly 1,700 people signed a petition against the idea put forward by Santa Margalida Town Hall.

Vibrant protests have al-

ready seen more than 5,000 people form a defiant human chain on the beach and now an ecologist group and residents’ association are formalising their objections.

Arguing that the blueprints would badly impact the Xarca Natura 2000 protected area, the GOB ecologist group and Son Serra residents’ associa-

tion claimed that the Na Borges community area would greatly suffer.

The groups have urged caution in the establishment of any new installations in the area in lieu of firm ecological guidelines.

In related news, the GOB reported an illegal dumping at the site to the Coastal Author-

ity in the hopes that they can clarify what happened and who is responsible.

Stones, sand and earth were dumped at a key plot on land at Calle Joan Frontera Riera in flagrant violation of the law according to the group.

Whether the incident is connected to the ongoing protests is unclear at this time.

Palma fire chief is suspended AFTER more than a decade in charge, the chief of the Palma fire brigade has been suspended after being found to be almost twice the legal limit after crashing his car into a motorbike. Manuel Nieto personally

informed Citizens’ Security councillor Angelica Pastor of the incident and placed himself at her disposal.

Placing the next highest ranking officer in charge, Pastor explained that Nieto was

driving his own private vehicle at the time and that the biker involved suffered minor injuries. Police arriving on the scene breathalysed both drivers and found Nieto to be significantly above the limit.

Transparency regulations MORE details must be published

By Eleanor Hawkins ANDRATX Council has approved its new transparency regulations, which are now official as they were published last week in the Official Community Bulletin.

The regulations establish that a long list of information including council members’ salaries and asset declarations, expenses for publicity

campaigns, annual amounts assigned to local political groups and contracts signed by the council must be published on the municipal website.

Other data the council will have to publish on its website includes budget details, a list of municipally-owned assets, environmental impact studies and mobility plans among others.

Black spots on local roads come under the spotlight

countryside, who have for years been complaining about dangerous black spots on local roads, will be pleased to

know that something is to be done about them at last.

Last week, delegate for Territory and Infrastructure Mercedes Garrido visited the area and was accompanied on an inspection tour by local mayor Virgilio Moreno to study the worse local black spots.

These were identified as being located on roads leading towards Llubi and Sineu with the main problem being a lack of visibility, and a study will be drawn up to identify ways to improve the problems.

Listening to locals FOLLOWING complaints from local residents, a ban on parking outside the cathedral in Palma’s La Seu district due to begin on Monday (January 18) was postponed until February 1.

The council’s Mobility department put back the date the regulation is to come into effect after a meeting with the residents’ association and accepted a request to extend the hours of nighttime parking for residents to 5pm-10am.

By Matthew Elliot BEATING Barcelona, the Balearic Islands registered the highest number of cruise ships visiting Spanish ports in 2015.

While most ports saw a tremen-

dous increase in passenger traffic, the Balearics excelled with the arrival of 773 cruise ships compared to Barcelona on 723, and Las Palmas on 447.

The nation as a whole witnessed a very positive year with

approaching eight million passengers arriving at Spanish ports, representing an impressive increase of 10.4 per cent on 2014. More than 3,500 cruise ships docked in Spain in the first 11 months of the year.

Savage scrap causes chaos A MAN has been left fighting for his life after a violent brawl erupted between two Chinese workers on a building site on Calle Jaume III in Palma.

Passersby were shocked by the fight, which took place on the busy street on January 16. The 53-yearold was rushed to hospital after smashing his head against the pavement leaving him unconscious in a puddle of blood.

Crash leaves driver dead A TRAGIC accident unfolded on the early hours of January 17 as a driver was killed after crashing into an injured horse lying across the road between Inca and Lloseta. A passenger was injured and taken to Inca hospital for treatment.

The horse was injured as the result of an accident only moments earlier when another vehicle struck the animal, but the second incident was fatal for both the 28-year-old driver and the horse as his car violently overturned upon impact.

Informed minutes before by the passengers in the first car, the Guardia Civil was on its way to the scene on the Ma-2110 road, but was unfortunately too late to prevent the second crash.

Concern for poor families HUMANITY ahead of profits in the winter season ENERGY poverty has been highlighted as a cause for concern by the Territory, Energy and Mobility department of the Balearic Islands.

The authority has held a meeting at which they called on electricity companies to refrain from cutting off supply to needy families who prove they are unable to pay their bills.

The Autonomous Government has called for the action to prevent families being stranded with no heating or electricity in the midst of winter, as the cold snap kicks in and is expected to last until March.

Energy remains a key issue in wider Spanish politics as the larger companies continue to post enormous profits.

Hospital braced for flu patients AN extra eight beds will come in handy for the emergency department at Son Espases hospital, as it expect s an avalanche of flu patients with the cold weather kicking in.

A further dozen nurses and nursing assistants have been drafted in for t he f l u season which has now arrived in force, with the virus rearing its ugly head.

The general hospital just outside of Palma now has 106 beds to help brace it for the influx of pat i ent s, m ost of whom are elderly, fragile and suffering from pre-existing conditions.

With a busy few weeks expected, the Pneumology department is confident that the hospital is now well prepared.

A war of words at victims charity

By Matthew Elliot THE president of the Donavida association for victims of gender violence has vehemently denied accusations that she was living in a flat rented out for battered women.

Massive fire rips through estate A MONSTROUS fire wreaked enormous damage across the Son Rossinyol industrial estate in Palma, destroying a carpentry company’s warehouse and two vans.

The blaze required seven teams of firefighters battling for 12 hours to gain the upper hand as wood and machinery aggravated the situation.

The Palma fire brigade was called out at approximately 8.50pm on Thursday January 14 and worked right through to the Friday morning tackling the flames, with teams staying throughout the following day to deal with the aftermath and prevent a further incident.

Carpentry firm Magatzem Exclusiu was the chief victim with its entire warehouse ravaged.

One of the owners, Biel Barcelo, said “Everything is destroyed. What didn’t burn was ruined by the water.” As he waded through the puddles and ashes, he did manage to see the bright side.

“Luckily nobody was inside. Anything that can be solved with money doesn’t matter.”

Forensic teams have opened an investigation into how the fire began, with Barcelo suspecting an electrical fault, while insurance inspectors are tallying up the cost of the damage.

Immaculada Matarin claims that the allegation by her vice-president, Concepcion Lorente, was motivated by revenge and that she had committed no misdeed.

A court complaint was launched after Lorente filed a report stating that the presi-

dent of the Palma based organisation had signed a rental contract in the name of the charity in October without her consultation as treasurer.

The owner of the property then came forward to claim that Matarin had been living

in the flat with her three children.

The president rejects both claims, insisting that no women could live there anyway as the place is a mess. She argues that sometimes she slept over while cleaning the property but lives in her own home.

Q. Why are my eyes more at risk when I’m skiing?

A. The atmosphere on the slopes is very clear and the reflection of sunlight on the slopes is very strong. These two factors combine to be potentially damaging to the eyes and could lead to long term effects.

Q. How does this affect my eyes?

A. Although people know how important it is to keep skin protected from the sun, few realise how damaging UV rays can be to the eyes. The UVB rays can irritate the surface of the eye, causing a painful form of sunburn of the eye (called photokeratitis).

You may not even be aware whilst out in the snow, as the effects can take six-12

hours to develop. Long-term exposure to UVB can cause cataracts and even ocular tumours.

Q. How can I protect my eyes whilst out on the slopes?

A. All you need is good sunglasses, but make sure you choose the right ones. Always read the label carefully and choose the maximum protection factor available. Remember that eyes will be exposed to high levels of UV even if it’s not sunny. Choosing sunglasses without the right protection could damage the eye by causing the pupil to dilate, increasing the amount of UV light filtering into the eyes, so always keep this in mind when selecting your eyewear.

IN a statement to the Islamic Republic News Agency on January 9, Deputy Petroleum Minister and Managing Director of National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC) Abbas Kazemi said that Iran is to invest in the construction of an oil refinery in Spain.

Their ability to do this comes about following the anticipated relaxation of sanctions against Iran thanks to its agreement to drastically reduce its atomic capability. Whilst it is looking for inbound investment as well as sales of oil to the west, it also sees some major advantages to external investment and Spain has shown an early interest in partnering with the country.

This is a very sensible move by Iran as by being a 50 per cent investor in the new refinery which is expected to be able to refine 200,000 barrels a day, it is guaranteeing sales of crude oil for use in Spain and its refinery.

HOME RETAIL GROUP: Has been in discussions over the sale of DIY business Homebase since September and an offer is being considered.

BRITISH company the Home Retail Group, owner of both Argos and Homebase, has revealed that it has been in discussion with Australian retailer Wesfarmers over the sale of DIY business Homebase since September and has received an offer of £340 million (€450 million) for the company which is being considered.

Wesfarmers owns both DIY company Bunnings, and the very well-known Coles supermarket chain.

According to the BBC, John Walden, chief

executive of Home Retail, said the sale would allow the company to focus on Argos with an improved financial position, which represented “an even greater opportunity for building longterm shareholder value.”

Earlier this month, Sainsbury’s said that Home Retail had rejected its bid to buy the Argos chain which it planned to incorporate into its own supermarkets. Perhaps if this sale went through, it would result in two queues for shoppers instead of one at busy periods.

Italian restaurants based in the UK A SPANISH recruitment agency has been given the job of finding up to 300 Spanish employees, especially chefs to work in an expanding chain of Italian style restaurants all over the UK. Formerly known as Bella Pasta, Bella Italia is being relaunched by its owners, the Tragus group, which also owns the Café Rouge and Strada chains.

It appears that the chain is looking in Spain because they want staff who are used to working with Mediterranean cuisine, much of which forms the basis of the restaurant’s menu and it is suspected that with the very high level of unemployment in Spain that Spanish chefs will be more affordable, but they will need to have a decent level of English if they wish to be employed.

Food up, underwear down at Marks and Spencer as it appoints new CEO

By John Smith ALTHOUGH it continues to be a popular household name and despite the fact that its food prices are higher than many supermarkets, the food division of Marks and Spencer continues to perform well showing a small overall increase in turnover during 2015 and a phenomenal surge of 17 per cent in the Christmas week.

This upswing in food has not been reflected in general merchandise sales which includes underwear as well as clothing, and furnishing shows a 5.8 per cent drop in the last quarter of the year blamed in part on warm December weather as well as unavailability of certain products.

In keeping with an announcement made during 2015, the Chief Executive Marc Bolland will step down after six years in the role and will be replaced by another internal promotion in the form of Steve Rowe who is the current executive director of general merchandise and will receive a salary of £810,000 (€1.1 million) from April 2 when he takes over.

Swannell, investors had not been pushing for Mr Bolland to resign and even though the new CEO has presided over the department which has lost business, the market reacted well with a slight increase in share price.

I FIND the claims for compensation by families of Iraqi and Afghanistan insurgents killed

by British troops, somewhat akin to the car crash ‘victims’ who claim exorbitant whiplash payouts.

Actions, often completely unfounded, encouraged by the despicable ‘ambulance chasing’ lawyers, who have sprouted like cancerous tumours since the introduction of the ‘uman rights’ bonanza championed by Cherie Blair.

This mercenary and unfeeling bunch will stop at nothing to swell their ever increasing coffers. They have gone to extraordinary lengths in their endless quests of greed to hound and harass our brave servicemen and women, even sinking as low as sending people to knock on doors and encourage the families of insurgents killed in battle to sue the MoD. They have managed to drag up over 1,100

compensation claims from the Iraqi war alone.

Some of these cases will not be resolved for years. As far as the lawyers are concerned, the longer the better, but for the military personnel

accused it can be a living hell, possibly for the rest of their lives.

While our heroes suffer and experience these completely undeserved traumas, many

of the ‘victims’ who have already received payouts, have bought luxury cars and large homes in wealthy areas of Basra.

And who foots the bill for this disgusting travesty? Why the good old British taxpayer of course. Who else?

To me, the answer to this disgraceful witchhunt, is to place a cap on the fees and remunerations these lawyers and their ‘clients’ receive. Not only should the practice be made far less lucrative, including time duration penalties, but in the event cases are not proven, these exploiting lawyers should themselves be investigated.

If then found guilty of any misconduct or questionable actions, subsequently disbarred or struck off altogether. Hit this bunch of pocket-liners where they would feel it most, in their bulging wallets. Their civil actions have already cost the taxpayer millions, and heaped untold misery on hundreds of our brave military personnel. The sooner they are all hung out to dry the better.

New Spanish ATM charges are in breach of the EU law MOST Spanish banks are in breach of EU law in charging for IBAN transfers inside the Eurozone, indeed even inside Spain itself.

Scandalously the Caixa Bank charge you €3.75 for doing your own transfer online and then a further €0.36 for sending an email to the person being paid! They are totally shameless. I closed our account.

EU law (confirmed to me by ABN-AMRO and HSBC) states that ‘transfers by private citizens up to €12,500 and inside the Eurozone must be free.’

And how can we be sure this is a law? Well, if you know the Dutch you’ll understand this: When the law came in I asked ABN-AMRO why there were no longer any charges, and they explained.

Thus you will understand that the Dutch would never refrain from c h a rg i n g so m e o n e u n le s s they were obliged to.... by law!

HSBC also confirmed this to me, and did so rather smugly because they are outside the zone, and thus can continue ripping people off.

Don’t hold your breath on this switch to a bank that doesn’t charge you.

One of life’s characters Hi Leapy, We often holiday in Torrevieja and I get the EWN, I enjoy your column, also get the online version, so I keep up with things in Spain.

You sound as if you are thinking on the same plane as a cousin of mine, who knew you years back.

His name is Martin Carter, alias Spida.

He is one of life’s characters and describes himself as a troubadour.

He has written and sung many great songs, some controversial and is in the folk scene. He has played in Majorca, Spain, Portugal and latterly Tenerife, where he recently had a heart attack, after a gig.

Then the dog runs in and jumps on the settee and bed. Is the dog Dettol-ised as well? Then he licks people’s faces after licking his own tail end and those of the other dogs he’s met! Maybe the dog gets scrubbed with Dettol too?

We are a flawed species, sad as it is

AFTER spending seven New Year’s Eve celebrations in Benidorm, which to start with were at the Triangle (and wonderful), they were then moved to near the council offices. It went down a bit, but was still good with the big screens, stage and great bands with good singers. One could have a lot of fun, and with the countdown - and the eating of the grapes and drinks everyone had a dance if they wanted and enjoyed themselves.

What happened to this year 2016? It was so disappointing, the dreadful loud speakers, music and loudmouthed DJs. No lovely band and no countdown, which caused many people not to eat their grapes or toast in the New Year.

The fireworks were miles away up at the point, the whole thing lost its lovely atmosphere and most people just drifted off straight away. Several friends, myself included, said we wouldn’t bother to go back next year.

Has anyone noticed? Men and children (never the women) leav-

ing the house still eating their breakfast, don’t they clean their teeth now? No wonder so many dentists in England have private planes and luxury cars!

Then the Dettol adverts. Everything must be ‘dettol-ised,’ worktops, floor, clothes, bedding etc.

The house is so sterile; no wonder the kids pick up germs as soon as they walk out the door.

Whatever next, having heard it before way back, it’s a great idea I’m with you totally on this. But really, if one takes time to think about it really it’s us humans that screw it up ‘Big Time.’

It’s our interpretation that’s at fault. As a species we are flawed, sad though it is, I think your thousand years a very optimistic estimate.

Changes To UK Bank Deposit Compensation Scheme Since the banking crisis, the EU compensation scheme means that any savings you have in a bank in the EU up to €100,000 are protected. If a bank fails, your savings are refunded. The UK’s equivalent has been £85,000, but if you have savings in a UK bank you should note that from 1st January this deposit guarantee has fallen to £75,000 per institution.

The guarantee is per individual, so when a couple holds a joint account it will be protected up to €200,000/£150,000. However, it is also worth noting that an institution is not the same as a bank – the Halifax and Bank of Scotland are one institution, for example.

The UK’s Financial Services Compensation Scheme is based on the EU compensation scheme.

Spain has the Fondo de Garantía de Depósitos and the limit here remains €100,000 as the Euro amount has not changed.

In July 2015 the Bank of England’s Prudential Regulation Authority announced that it will reduce its guarantee to £75,000 to be in line with the current exchange rate - the Euro had fallen against the pound, impacting the deposit guarantee.

In July 2015, a new rule was introduced in the UK to protect savings of up to £1 million for a period of up to six months to cover ‘life events.’ These are situations that could lead to you having a temporarily high balance, such as selling your home, inheritances, compensation payments etc. The rule allows you time to make other arrangements for your funds.

If you have more than the guaranteed limit (£75,000 in

the UK, €100,000 in Spain) in a single institution, any excess will not be protected. You may wish to consider spreading your savings between institutions (the balance in any one should be lower than £75,000/ €100,000 to cover interest).

Another way to decrease risk is to diversify across different investment assets, which can also increase the potential for improved returns.

You can also move capital into alternate investment arrangements that provide a higher level of protection.

Luxembourg stands out among EU states with its strong culture of investor protection and a regime that provides maximum security to investors without limit.

The Isle of Man, Jersey and

Guernsey are not in the EU, so neither the EU scheme nor the UK Financial Services Compensation Scheme covers banks there, even if they are divisions of UK institutions. If a bank failed, you would need to rely on the local guarantee scheme, where the compensation limit is £50,000.

Family Matters WHY take part in Veganuary? Well, why not? There are so many reasons people decide to try vegan. For most, a love of animals is the catalyst. Some people want to feel better about themselves and the impact they make on the world. Others would like to set themselves a challenge, and many combine Veganuary with their ‘New Year’s Resolutions’ and see trying vegan as the healthiest start to the year.

For my part I’d always been interested in the idea of not eating any type of animal product, including dairy and eggs, but I’d always thought it would be too difficult to keep it up. I decided to try to make it through a month with the support of www.veganuary.com and my very helpful husband and daughter. I’ve discovered new ingredients, and a whole new world of taste and flavour and I feel fantastic!

everything you could need in the way of recipes and ideas to get you going on your new lifestyle. Launched in the UK in January 2014, Veganuary is a global campaign that encourages people to try vegan for January.

As a non-profit organisation, Veganuary is dedicated to changing public attitudes, while providing all the information and practical support required to make the transition to veganism as easy and enjoyable as possible.

Veganuary has had an incredible degree of success in a very short time and is changing lives all over the world. It also has some helpful answers to some of the questions I have been asked over the past few days as I have ‘come out’ as eating a vegan diet for January.

I’m not saying or claiming I can keep it up for the rest of my life, but I’ve already discovered that it is much easier than I thought it would be. Even eating out is easier than it used to be, I went to Simply Delicious in Santa Catalina and wolfed down their fabulous tapas knowing it was all 100% compliant. THERE were two major items of news recently that, although not directly linked, gave me serious pause for thought and strengthened my belief that not only do we live in a world ruled by vested interests, but that there is unbelievable hypocrisy at the highest levels which threaten the very existence of Western civilisation.

The first involved the widespread sexual assaults on women by men of Arab and North African origin during the New Year celebrations in Germany.

This followed widespread coverage over the internet, but largely overlooked by the press, of reports from health workers and independent witnesses, of chaos in German

PROPER INTEGRATION: Needs to be carefully managed. hospitals involving large numbers of immigrants demanding their ‘right’ to health care, and using threatening behaviour to staff.

In some cases, children were simply dumped at hos-

pitals to be taken care of.

If we needed reminding of what many of us have been banging on about for years, that unless proper integration is carefully managed, then throwing large numbers of di-

ametrically opposed cultures together is a recipe for disaster.

Then just two days later we heard of the execution on the same day of 47 Shia Muslims in Saudi Arabia - most of

them by beheading.

Forget for a moment the stated justification for this action – that they were guilty of terrorist acts – but just look at the guarded response to the trial of these people conducted in camera by heavily biased Sunni Muslim courts.

The legal system in this undemocratic oligarchy is based entirely on Sharia law which involves punishments such as beheading, stoning, mutilation and flogging.

Much of Sharia is justifiably regarded by the Western world as barbaric and harkens back to a medieval past, and yet whilst we rightly condemn and express our horror at the atrocities carried out by ISIL, our leaders stay strangely muted about the Saudi’s actions.

The relationship that we have with that country is based on mutual convenience and financial interests but make no mistake, like most of Islam they are no friends of ours.

THOSE who think that the ‘new’ style light bulbs are ugly, expensive and do not generate enough light, will be pleased to learn that scientists at the world famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology believe they have developed a way in which they can make the ‘old style’ traditional incandescent light bulb more efficient.

A number of countries have already phased out the old bulbs (as they waste large amounts of energy through heat), although it appears in Spain that they can still be purchased in Chinese Bazaars but are not always guaranteed to light without blowing fuses or exploding.

According to a report which has been published in the Nature Nanotechnology journal, these researchers have discovered a way in which they can improve the efficiency of the bulbs by recycling this waste energy

RESEARCHERS: Have found a way they can improve a bulb’s efficiency. and transferring it back to the filament, thus allowing the bulb to become more efficient and environment friendly.

It appears that there has been very little development in the technology behind the incandescent light bulb, which was launched by Edison in the

One area of world tension reduces IT seems that each of the major world powers needs to have at least one country that it can identify as being its ‘bête noir’, and for at least two decades Iran has been America’s and vice versa.

Now, however, with the drop in oil prices, the Saudi economy is almost in tatters but for Iran, which has coped with sanctions for so long, their disappearance in the main means they can actually see a massive improvement in their financial position, as they look to re-equip their industry, purchase a large number of new passenger aircraft and invest in the West to support their own oil industry.

Horse trotting races EUROPE’S first floodlit racecourse opened in 1965 in Mallorca.

Trotting races are held around a 1km track at 4:30pm on Sundays in winter. Traditional harness racing or ‘trotting’ meetings are a unique and exciting way to spend an evening.

Trotting is a form of racing in which the jockey sits in a small cart behind the horse and must prevent the horse from breaking into a gallop. It has been popular in Mallorca and Menorca for at least 200 years. If you go to a race meeting, remember that betting is an essential part of the process.

ROAD BIKING: Some of the biggest names will start their season at this event.

Mallorca Challenge FOUR-DAY event will see an international line-up

By Steve Walsh BICYCLE-MANIA will grip Mallorca once again next week as the first of this year’s big cycle races comes under starters orders on the 28th.

The 2016 edition of the Mallorca Challenge will see an international line up of top cyclists competing in four separate races.

The four-day event in Mallorca does not award a GC prize and is not a stage race.

Although it’s basically the Tour de Mallorca, it is not recognised as such or allowed to be classed as a multi-day stage race by the sport’s governing body, The Union Cycliste Internationale, due to the fact that riders are not required to race each

day, and teams may field different eight-man squads day-by-day.

In essence, the event is four one-day races held in the same region.

Some of the biggest names in road biking including: Bradley Wiggins, and Spanish champion Alejandro Valverde will start their season with this event. The beautiful 2016 route includes the following courses: Thursday January 28: Felanitx-Ses SalinesCampos-Porreres (174 kms); Friday January 29: Pollensa-Andratx (162.2 kms); Saturday January 30: Serra de Tramuntana-Sóller-Deiâ (143.9 kms) and Sunday January 31: Playa de Palma (161.5 kms).

We only have to look back at 2015 for an example of how important overseas property buyers are for Spain.

Official figures show over 65 per cent of all properties sold in Spain in 2015 were to overseas buyers, which is a

huge percentage.

Currently Spain has the most undervalued property market in Europe, especially when compared to the UK and Germany, which is very good news for property buyers and will attract even more overseas buyers and investors in 2016.

An increase in Spanish tourism has a positive impact on property sales and predictions for 2016 show we are in for another record year, which is good news for those of you selling your property.

The forecast for new build properties in Spain is also looking healthy in 2016, with over 200,000 new properties

planned to be built, but this figure is low if compared to the boom years when an incredible 800,000 new properties were built every year.

For buyers, it’s all good news! Property prices will remain very attractive, with some real bargains on offer.

London loses out FOR the first time in years, London is no longer represented in the top 10 European cities for investment prospects in property, having fallen down the rankings to 15th place as high prices make an impact.

Birmingham meanwhile took sixth spot on the list composed by PwC and the Urban Land Institute on Emerging Trends in Real Estate. Close enough to the south-east hub but much cheaper than London, the midlands city capitalised on the movement of business there from the capital, as well as the planned HS2 train line.

The report indicates where experts perceive the market heading in the future and is generated from interviews with leading developers, investors and managers across the continent.

Yield compression is a key culprit leading to London’s absence from the top tier, but the city remains the largest real estate market in Europe, with some analysts viewing this as a typical stage in a larger cycle.

Other experts, however, see continental Europe as drawing more foreign property investment in the near future as global giants look to shift their capital around in 2016.

I DRINK decaf black coffee. So what, you may ask. Well it’s not as simple and as easy as you may think.

For example you would be amazed at the amount of top class restaurants that either don’t serve it or what they do serve is instant and in a sachet.

Now I don’t have a problem with instant coffee - I use it a lot at home. But when I’m in a restaurant or hotel paying top dollar, pound, or euro, I don’t expect at the end of my meal, whilst everyone is having their mocha or latte or skinny white or whatever poncey overpriced coffee they want, for me to be told “Here is your sachet pal, make your own!” Because that’s what happens.

I get a cup of hot water, a sachet and a spoon! Plus I’m getting charged the same as everybody else.

I was in a Hilton hotel in Sheffield once and was looking at the menu and decided to have a sandwich and a cup of coffee. When the coffee arrived it was a sachet of Kenco so I said, “Excuse me, are you charging me £3.20 for this coffee?” “Yes why?

“That’s the price of our coffees.” “But don’t you think it’s a bit overpriced because it’s the same sachet of coffee that you give me for free in my room, plus I get a ginger hob nob as well!” “Sorry sir, that’s the price.” “Oh is it. OK how much for a cup of hot water?” “Nothing.” “OK, I’ll have a cup of hot water.”

I got that and went to my room and got a sachet of coffee.

It’s not the money really because if they made it with the ground coffee in the machine I’d pay for it the same as I do in the overpriced coffee shops. It’s the principle. The sandwich, by the way, was about £12, but that’s another column for another day.

Oh well that’s it for today. I’m just off to have a coffee - a Nespresso - you know the one that turns you into George Clooney. Mrs S would definitely pay £3.20 for that!

YELLOW ZIGZAGS: Indicate that parking is generally prohibited.

ROAD markings are there to serve as a means of separation for traffic, but they also provide the driver with information about the type of road and potential risks ahead.

Continuous White Lines A continuous white line on the road means no vehicle is allowed to cross that line. A longitudinal mark consisting of two continuous lines has the same meaning. You are not allowed to cross the solid white line for any reason, such as turning into another road or overtaking. The only exception is in order to pass a cyclist.

Broken White Lines A broken white line is intended to guide the movement of vehicles within lanes and no vehicle should cross that line unless it is necessary and the flow of traffic permits it.

You are permitted to cross the broken

white line in order to carry out a manoeuvre such as overtaking, so long as the way is clear, and you don’t impede movement of other vehicles. Broken white lines are also used to indicate the approach to hazardous areas and locations.

Stop Line A solid line arranged across the width of one or more lanes indicates that vehicles must not cross that line unless the obligations of the road are complied with.

Cycle Crossing A cross consisting of two parallel dashed lines on the roadway indicates a pathway crossing for cyclists.

Yellow Zigzags Locations marked with yellow zigzag markings indicate zones where parking is generally prohibited.

We stand corrected I AM a retired building services engineer and was uncomfortable with your comments in the Jan 7 issue that, ‘there is really no need for a specialist company to clean a water tank.’ My main concern is that you say people are drinking the water.

A tank large enough to support 27 units would hold several cubic metres of water. To clean it correctly, people would need to enter it. When they do, they could take in biological contaminants with them. This filth could contaminate the water that then fills the tank.

Combining these can be complex and bewildering so we developed the concept of ‘The seven Cs of colour combining’ outlined in the table above. The choices are yours. Nothing is right or wrong. After all it is your garden whether you do all the designing yourself or employ a landscape gardener.

HE was so clever, I trained him to a very high standard. He could do most things expected of a dog and was a wonderful family pet. He understood everything including silent language. He has now gone to Rainbow Bridge. I know most of my readers know of him.

Last week I visited Triple A Marbella.

They are a registered society which mean they have no government grants and rely on the public to be kind. The home provides shelter for over 700 animals around 450 dogs and 250 cats. They have four full time staff and a veterinary surgeon.

All the animals are treated by vets, vaccinated, chipped, neutered and tested for Mediterranean diseases. Triple A normally place 60 per cent of the animals.

There is a dedicated volunteer base and as a result many are placed in Germany, Sweden, Finland and the Netherlands. It is well worth taking a look at the kennels they are near La Cañada, tel 952 771 586.

I also have a 14-year-old Rotty name Sheba who misses Boy Boy. I will never have another dog due to our ages, in 18 months I will be 80!

My heart is broken; my arms are empty; how many tears I’ve cried.

I leave the house, into the lane we always walked together, he was excellent at the side of my wheelchair..

The rain is falling. I notice not. Just more tears on my face.

HE used to lead me down the road. His spirit leads me still.

But we go a different way to a very strange and different place.

I stand before a rustic bridge I’ve never seen before.

I stop. I know I’m not to cross. But why, I want to know.

And then the rain suddenly stops. I look up into the clouds.

I look down. The bridge is gone and in its place is a rainbow.

I look across the Rainbow Bridge and see a joyful sight.

Thousands of healthy furchildren playing with my beloved pet.

I want to run and love him, but I’m rooted to the spot.

He looks and wags his tail and I hear him bark, ‘Not yet.’

And then his bark turns to a voice and I hear him say, ‘You cared for me, you played with me and loved me to the end.

I’m healthy now, don’t cry for me. I’ll meet you here again.

Others need your love and care. I’m sending you a friend.’

I rub my eyes and the rainbow is again a rustic bridge.

I send a prayer for that quick glimpse to the loving God above.

I hear a noise and glance back down. I can’t believe my eyes.

Across the bridge, my darling pet sent a furbaby for me to love.

I pick up the furry bundle, hold him close to my dampened cheek.

He nuzzles my neck, kisses my tears. It’s true love at first sight.

Not to replace the one who’s gone; another who needs my love and care.

My eyes are drawn upward to see a Rainbow Bridge in radiating light.

Many people that go back to the UK who cannot afford to take them drive down some country road, pretend they are taking the dog for a walk and simply

drive off. Of course not many domestic dogs can survive and unless found will die.

Fear-free visit to vets FOR all pet owners who dread the day they have to take their animal to the vet, whether for a check-up or something more serious, because their pet goes crazy at the thought - there may be a solution.

Some vets are now revamping their premises to create a ‘fear-free’ environment for animals that should make them feel much more comfortable and cause less fuss when it’s time for the trip.

The innovations are based on new animal science which recognises the types of environments that can be particularly distressing to animals. The sound of fluorescent light-bulbs hurting dogs ears

being a simple example.

Ideas include eliminating discomforting props such as harsh bright lights, white lab coats, and cold exam tables. On the positive side, new ideas involve yoga mats instead of tables, classical music, and the use of seda-

tives rather than muzzles or restraints.

Gisela’s breakthrough came in 2004, when she was crowned world champion.

With a number of sporting accolades under her belt, Gisela attracted a host of sponsors and she entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the Youngest World Champion, aged just 13.

Jazz 5-star safety rating TOOK the title from a field of nine superminis THE all-new Honda Jazz has been awarded with independent safety organisation Euro NCAP’s prestigious Best in Class 2015 award in the super-

mini category.

Earlier in 2015 the Honda Jazz achieved a maximum fivestar safety rating. Jazz took the title from a field of nine superminis in total.

Each year, Euro NCAP publishes a list of cars that have performed the best in their respective categories. To achieve

a ‘Best in Class’ award from Euro NCAP, cars from each category are assessed against a weighted sum of the scores in each of the four key areas of assessment: Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, Pedestrian and Safety assist. This sum is used as the basis for comparison of the vehicles.

Wins for Ibiza RFC and RC New manager Ponent in the Senior League for Mallorca Baleares Senior League El Toro RC travelled to Ibiza RFC on Saturday. On a hard pitch the first half of the game saw the two teams evenly matched and by half time neither team had much of an advantage. During the second half the home team pushed harder to overcome the visitor’s defences and won by 29 points to 12.

RC Ponent, who has no home pitch at the moment as they are no longer allowed to use Principes de España, took on Shamrock RC in Pollensa.

Ponent forwards were dominant throughout, however there was some good circulation of the ball from both teams.

Shamrock RC made a comeback during the second half but unfortunately too late to change the score which was a win for RC Ponent by 38 points to 12.
