Palma marches for the planet PROTEST ahead of UN climate summit

By Glynis German This Sunday (November 29) local environmental organisations from Palma will be doing their bit by holding a march as part of a global climate campaign.

The demonstration is one of more than 2,000 marches taking place in 150 countries in advance of the UN climate summit in Paris, next Sunday (December 6).

Campaigners around the world are looking to influence one of the biggest UN summits of the decade.

Online activist network organisers, Avaaz, had originally planned to march through the streets of Paris

but due to the recent terrorist attacks, this has been cancelled due to heightened security.

Marches across the world, however, will go ahead.

“It’s time to take a stand for change, to demand that our politicians do more than just state their good intentions,” explained organiser Rocio Juan Ruiz.

“Sunday will be a day to do just that, by wearing green and dancing with the band Drummers for Peace, and Tomas Graves will read from the organisation’s manifesto to conclude the proceedings.”

Beach clean up VOLUNTEERS, in collaboration with local maritime association Dos Manos, will gather at different beaches this Saturday to collect rubbish whilst creating awareness of the problem.

The association collects the data to analyse the situation and teams are on hand to talk about plastic pollution and the solutions available.

Felanitx tragedy A MAN digging in a well was trapped under soil when a wall collapsed on top of him. Emergency services took an hour to locate and

free the body, but he was declared dead at the scene. An investigation has been opened to establish the cause behind the accident.

THE PRESIDENT of the Consell, Miguel Ensenyat, attended a prayer for peace organised by the Inter Religious Group of Mallorca last week in Palma.

The group led by Father Miquel Mascaró and made up of local representatives from the various religious traditions including Islam, decided to come

together to pray for peace in light of the recent attacks around the world.

Whilst candles were lit, the representative from each faith read from their spiritual or religious texts. Father Miquel was grateful to the President and the Consell for allowing the event to take place. “How I wish we wouldn’t

have this excuse to meet and pray for peace,” said Father Miquel “but the few fanatics in the world make it all the more important for the rest of us to recognise that peace is the only way.”

Mr Ensenyat declared that “this is a special day to celebrate acts of non-violence.”

DURING the week of the 40th anniversary of the death of Franco, 16 Catholic churches across the country held services in his honour, including one in the basilica at the Valley of the Fallen, where he is buried in a tomb built by political prisoners.

By John Smith THE year 1936 saw the start of the Spanish Civil War which saw brother pitted against brother and allowed the Nazi war machine to test its air force in anticipation of the blitzkrieg (lightning war) that it would unleash on Europe just three years later.

Following the great depression of the late 1920s, the 1930s were not good years and there was a rise to power of extremists on both the right and left of the political spectrum. On one side were Hitler and Mussolini, who were to be joined, albeit in spirit by Franco and Stalin on the other, and various leaders of other European countries with differing views in between.

The Civil War was never a straight-

Helping Germany forward battle between good and evil or right and left. Franco was the youngest general in Spain and was horrified by the rise of the Republicans who removed the king and took little notice of the conservative church.

Ironically, he ‘invaded’ Spain as part of a revolution to restore the monarchy and the church at the head of the ‘Army of Africa’ which included a large number of Muslims. He took the title Regent to the King of Spain, which he held until he appointed King Juan Carlos in 1975.

Hero or villain, he did see an improvement in the economy and was shrewd enough to keep Spain out of the Second World War. Francisco Franco was buried in the Valley of the Fallen, the memorial to the dead of both sides despite his wish to be buried in Madrid.

No appetite for war DEVASTATED by Civil War, the Spanish economy was weak and the people had little appetite for further fighting which is why Franco did not join the Axis forces in 1939. He did assist with the supply of materials and allowed the Germans to use certain Spanish ports for refurbishment of supplies and equipment.

They had agreed to fly a mission to pick up General Franco,

who had been ‘sidelined’ in the Canaries by the Republican government who saw him as a threat, and fly him to Tetuan to join up with the Spanish Army of Africa.

It is not known whether the flight was approved by the British government but it is highly unlikely that officers of Special Branch who recorded all international flights did not

report the departure.

Bebb was later awarded a number of Spanish decorations following the end of the Civil War and the plane is now in the Museo del Aire near Madrid.

JUST prior to his death, General Franco is reported to have said: “I ask pardon of all my enemies, as I pardon with all my heart all those who declared themselves my enemy, although I did not consider them to be so.”

King declared JUAN Carlos crowned TWO days after the death of General Franco, his chosen successor Prince Juan Carlos was sworn in as the new king of Spain and in his speech of accession, he hinted that it was his wish to see democratic reform and tolerance of other cultures within Spain.

Entrepreneur of the Year awards CEREMONY took place to elect the Balearic finalist CORINNA GRAF, CEO of Port Portals has been elected Balearic finalist for the EY Entrepreneur of the Year award.

EY (formerly Ernst and Young) have been recognising the strengths and sacrifices made by entrepreneurs worldwide since 1996, especially when these qualities have allowed entrepreneurs to be an example to their companies.

The ceremony took place at the Hotel Son Vida with the President of the Balearic Port Authority, Joan Gual de Torrella, presiding.

Ms Graf is a graduate of economics from the Swiss University of St Gallen and has managed Port Portals since 2012. She was delighted to be elected and said:

“Being the Balearic finalist for this award is a reward for all the hard work we’ve put in these last few years in making Port Portals stand out in the Mediterranean nautical industry.”

Port Portals is a one of the Mediterranean’s most prestigious nautical and leisure complexes. Situated in the Bay of Palma it offers 639 berths for private yachts of up to 60 metres as well as a so-

phisticated shopping parade with boutique shops, restaurants and bars amongst other businesses.

The winner of the Spanish finalists will be chosen in February.

Ice rink opens this weekend EVERY year before Christmas until after the San Sebastian fiestas, Palma enjoys its very own ice skating rink situated by the Parc de les Estacions.

The good news is that the rink is

back this weekend and will be open every day until January.

Skates can be hired and monitors are available to teach young children how to skate. Requirements are gloves

and a sunny disposition!

Meanwhile, around the area of the station, there are stalls selling Christmas decorations, food and with music to get people into the festive spirit.

Civil baptism Concert to raise funds for orphans and children in care

THE town of Porreres adopted a new measure this week to ensure that civil baptisms were made available to all those who requested them.

The town is the first on the island to regulate such a ceremony although other towns have already allowed the practice to take place. The new ordinance stipulates that: “The act of civil baptism or welcome will not have a civil or administrative value, but a social one with commitments of equality and freedom.”

WILL benefit the Nazaret Foundation THE Nazaret children’s home will host a benefit concert to raise much needed funds for the various programmes it provides for orphans and children in care.

The Quatre Llunes choir from Alaro will perform accompanied by the Nazaret Children’s Choir and the Sant Gaieta choir.

The children’s home was in the news recently when a 15-year-old was arrested for beating a monitor unconscious.

The home, started in 1924, is one of Mallorca’s oldest children’s homes and provides shelter and education for children and adolescents in care. It also houses a successful printing company where the older children can learn a trade.

The concert will take place on Saturday November 28 at 8pm in the Sant Gaieta school (Avenida Picasso 21, Palma). Tickets cost €10 and all proceeds will go to the Nazaret Foundation.

Building blocks THE Mayor of Palma, Jose Hila, and the Vice President and Councillor for Tourism of the Balearic Government, Biel Barcelo, were confident this week that the conference centre, Palacio de Congresos, will continue with its building work.

Appearing on local television, the public officials were pressing ahead to oblige Acciona, the construction company in charge of the building works, to keep to their prior agreements and complete work by the end of the year.

“We believe the work has to finish and that Acciona has no real motive to disrupt the work,” said Barcelo.

“We would apply the appropriate penalties if they delayed,” added Hila, suggesting that everyone will benefit if the work is completed on time.

The following day Acciona stopped all work pending more discussions.

Andratx to Palma bus LOCAL neighbourhood platform, Salvem Andratx, will be taking their complaints about the 102 bus service to the appropriate organisations.

They have started a petition to ask for an improved Andratx to Palma bus service.

BENEFIT CONCERT: Will take place on November 20 and tickets cost €10.

The journey takes up to an hour and a half and is often overcrowded. “The elderly who are dependent on the bus to take them to medical appointments more often than not arrive too late,” said Salvem Andratx.

The shopping centre is situated in the current Carrefour in Coll d’en Rebassa and will offer many fashion brands along with shops dedicated to home,

beauty, sports and health. There will also be a large area housing restaurants, cinemas and leisure activities.

More than 3,000 employment contracts are expected to be offered, which is good news for the many on the island who are out of work.

Marratxi Filling the slot with Council low-cost flights cancels projects HISTORY was made this week in the municipality of Marratxi when the mayor, Joan Francesc Canyelles (Més), announced the decision to abandon the second phase of construction of the Es Caülls housing development as well as an industrial estate planned on 23 hectares of land near Pla de Na Tesa.

The construction would have seen the building of 670 homes to house more than 2,000 people as well as 32 retail outlets.

With this decision the land is now re-qualified as rural land. The plan was ratified by the tripartisan ruling body made up of Més, PSOE and Guanyem.

A WEEK since Air Berlin announced the closure of its Palma airport hub, other low-cost airlines are looking to fill the gap. The departure of Air Berlin leaves some five million passengers needing to fly, an available 24 per cent of the Mallorca market.

However, Air Berlin will not leave the island completely and will still offer regular flights between Palma and Germany.

Seventy per cent of flights from Palma airport are with budget carriers. With the presence of other low-cost airlines looking to step in, Air Europa quickly announced the creation of its new budget airline, Air Europa Express.

Air Europa Express has plans to offer 27 more flights costing as little as €29 when they commence operations in March 2016.

Library receives more than 100 letters PALMA library, Biblioteca Lluis Alemany, received a generous donation of over 100 letters written by the Mallorcan poet Maria Antonia Salvà this week. The letters will be included in the archive and historians and investigators will be delighted with this new treasure trove. Maria Antonia Salvà is considered an important member of the ‘noucentista’ movement of Catalan writers and in 1910 she published her first book of poems.

The donation of these letters, written by her to Pilar Feliu, has a double importance as it will not only enrich the archive, but also provide the other side of the story of those letters from Pilar Feliu which are already included in the archive.

Four million euros Resident says refugees welcome to improve prospects LIBBY PICKETT wants to help those in need SOLLER resident, Libby Pickett has agreed to open her home to receive refugees.

Libby explained: “I want to help someone who needs help and that person right now is a refugee. It’s someone who has risked his or her life to escape from a situation that I cannot even begin to imagine.”

She has signed up with Soller Amb Els Rufigiats, a neighbourhood association created when the refugee crisis was at its height. The association has been raising awareness in the town and meet every Tuesday evening to discuss how best to help.

Fall from balcony NATIONAL POLICE are investigating the fall of a French woman, 42, from the balcony of a first floor apartment in Palma.

The neighbours called the emergency services in the early hours of the morning. When police and paramedics arrived, she told them that she had seen ‘bugs’ crawling up her legs.

She claimed she had got nervous and fallen accidently. Police believe she may have been sedated or under the influence of drugs. She sustained several injuries and was taken to Son Espases Hospital.

LOCAL government this week presented the project for the Law of Equality which will pass to Parliament in December, who are expected to approve it between March and April next year.

Councillor for Social Affairs, Fina Santiago along with Marc Pons, councillor for the Presidency were joined by Rosa Cursach, Director of the Balearic Women’s Institute (Institut

Balear de la Dona) to explain what the new law entails.

The term economic violence was used to describe the situation whereby absent fathers deliberately and intentionally withhold payment of child maintenance.

This tactic was described as a form of control over women causing economic distress and psychological damage.

However, it was pointed out that women not receiving maintenance did have access to community ser-

vices including some social income.

Symbolic violence was another term introduced to describe degrading images of women presented by the media.

A positive image of women, especially by the media already reporting on local government affairs, was requested.

Amongst other points made were more equal employment especially in public office and the use of sanctions and fines for not adhering to the law.

Sun and snow expected FROM high winds to rain accompanied by sunshine, along with temperatures falling, perhaps it was to be expected that snow would fall on the mountains in Mallorca this week.

The Massanella mountain presented a

beautiful sight with snow covering the top earlier in the week.

Forming part of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, the Massanella is the second highest mountain in Mallorca with a height of 1.364m.

Black Friday could be the day for you!

BARGAINS will be found in most shops and stores across the country

By Glynis German IF you like shopping for a bargain then perhaps Black Friday is the day for you!

The term was originally coined in 1966 in the USA as the first Friday after the American holiday of Thanksgiving would be a day for shopping. Unfortunately it was often accompanied by bad tempers, traffic accidents and sometimes even violence.

However, retailers wanted

to offer a more positive experience and on Black Friday many bargains are to be found in most shops and stores across the country.

Here in Mallorca, many shopping centres will offer discounts on many products for Black Friday and will also take advantage of the date by extending it to include the weekend. It is expected that this year ’s sales will reach €1,172 million, a 10.6 per cent increase over last year’s Black Friday.

BLACK FRIDAY: Many bargains will be found.

New €20 note is already in circulation THE new €20 note is already in circulation and includes an innovative anti-counterfeit measure in the form of a portrait window.

When the banknote is held against the light,

the window becomes transparent and reveals a portrait of the mythological figure Europa, visible on both sides of the note.

It is the third note in the Europa series re-

placing the original euro notes which were first introduced in 2002. The new notes of €50, €100, €200 and €500 will be introduced in due course.

FINANCE

The Balearics Islands’ government has published the 2016 draft budget for the region. This includes higher tax rates for the most important taxes in the region.

With effect from 31st December 2015 (this means that this measure will be applicable for the whole fiscal year 2015, so if passed it will be retrospective), the number of tax brackets for personal income tax progressive rates will be increased and the tax rates will be higher for income exceeding €70,000.

Wealth Tax (Impuesto sobre el Patrimonio) Under the state rules, each individual, regardless of residence, receives an annual allowance of €700,000

for wealth tax purposes.

Islas Baleares increased its individual deduction for wealth tax from €700,000 to €800,000 from 1st January 2015. However, with the new 2016 draft budget it proposes to re-introduce the €700,000 deduction with effect from 31st December 2015 (so the measure will be retrospective and applicable for the whole fiscal year 2015 if passed).

Additionally, they have modified the applicable wealth tax rates, increasing significantly the tax due, more than doubling the tax due in some bands.

All the rates have increased. For example, currently the lowest rate is 0.2%, and this increases to 0.28%.

At the other end of the scale the top rate increases from 2.5% to 3.45%.

Succession and Gift Tax (Impuesto sobre Sucesiones y Donaciones) Currently, a 99% deduction is applicable for de-

scendants, ascendants and spouses on inheritances taxable under the Balearics Islands’ rules. The amount is the result of deducting from the discounted quota (‘cuota bonificada’), the taxable base multiplied by 0.01. So the payable tax will be 1% of the taxable base no matter what the value of the inheritance is.

The 2016 draft budget removes this deduction and includes the following progressive succession and gift tax rates for group I and II beneficiaries (basically, spouses and children). This will apply to deaths from 1st January 2016 onwards.

The Balearics budget needs to go through the normal parliamentary procedures and, subject to any amendments in parliament, will be probably approved by the end of the year.

A lottery system was used to dete r m i n e t h e n u mb e r from wh i c h t h e C h a i r o f each b o a r d a n d t h eir deputie s, a s we l l a s tw o membe r s a n d t wo a l ternates, shall be designated in each of the 79 polling stations, which includes a total of 415 tables.

Out of the 3,735 people w ho we r e c h o se n , 1 ,2 4 5 were made responsible for each of the tables. On each table there will be a president and two members, and the remaining 2,490 people will be alternates.

East meets west PROPOSAL to improve the Ma-6100 between Ses Salines and Colonia Sant Jordi

ROAD IMPROVEMENTS: Project includes a new pedestrian promenade and widening the pavement.

By Glynis German THIS week the town of Ses Salines considered proposed improvements to the Ma-6100 road which goes from the town to neighbouring Colonia Sant Jordi.

The proposals were presented by the Councillor for Territory and

Infrastructure, Mercedes Garrido to the Mayor, Bernat Roig earlier this week.

Other members of the town council were present to hear what improvements were planned.

The project includes a pedestrian promenade which will be two metres wide, linking the two towns. In addition, the pavement would be wider so cyclists

can travel there more safely.

The final decision is pending approval of the Plenary Council but beforehand the environmental impact study has to be made by the Balear Commission for the Environment.

Guard promised that this study would be shared with residents of both towns to keep them informed of the plans.

Crack down on uncivil owners ESPORLES is cracking down on uncivil dog owners.

One of the biggest problems with dog owners it seems, is the mess their pets make. The town council, together with the Local Police, will be applying the law more forcefully as a result.

Fines between 60 and 300 euros will be applied for owners who allow their dogs to foul the streets.

However, the council recognises that another infraction of the law is that many pets do not carry the obligatory microchip and so the Local Police officers will be making spot checks armed with the microchip reader.

NEXT year the Hotel Melia de Mar in Illetes will celebrate 60 years and as such will receive a special anniversary gift in the form of a facelift. The hotel will become the face of luxury under the brand name Gran Melia.

The special makeover will increase the quality of the rooms as well as the areas surrounding the pool and the terraces.

There will be next generation televisions and the investment is expected to reach three million euros.

THE Department of Environment for the Consell de Mallorca presented the 2016 budget this week with a total of €9.1 million, an increase of 13.2 per cent from last year.

The budget, shared between waste and environment agencies, will concentrate on four main areas. One of the biggest investments will be for the Sa Dragonera Natural Park.

A total of €100,000 will be used to create an investigation centre in order to boost tourism, further education and increase awareness about the park. A technical study of land and marine ecology will also be introduced.

As well as investment on the network of island refuges and a better workshop for ship builders, the budget will also be used to create a plan for non-hazardous waste and to improve recycling waste across the island.

Light up for Christmas FRIDAY November 27 will see the christmas lights of El Corte Ingles (Avenidas) in Palma being switched on by Taekwondo champion, Brigitte Yagüe (silver, 2012 Olympic Games).

This will be held at 6.30pm and there will be music from the band Dodo to accompany festivities.

For the love of children Our Euro Women series is featuring women who have made a success of their lives in Spain. These outstanding ladies have been shattering glass ceilings whether in business, charity work or sports.

Annette English has helped improve the lives of many disadvantaged children.

A CHRISTMAS gift campaign over a decade ago saw Annette and her husband Dave make a donation to ‘Make a Child Smile’.

Their efforts to give a needy child a happier Christmas were so well received that they were asked if they would do the same the following year and help the children in the Altea home. Visiting the centre, Annette asked what the children needed most, to which came the reply ‘love’. “I came away crying my eyes out,” admitted Annette, and since then it has been a labour of love as she has thrown herself into raising funds to buy essential items for the children, to give them hope for the future and let them know that someone cares.

And no one could care more than Annette: “I do love them.

When I see them I can’t stop hugging and kissing them and they say they love me, and that means a lot.

I’ve seen a lot of the children grow up over the years,” she said.

Annette was primarily fundraising for Emaus and when they took over the Elche home, she diverted her efforts there as it was closer to her home in La Marina. However, the two entities then separated and for a few years she was helping both Emaus and Elche Children’s Home until the Elche Children’s Care Home Charity was formally set up.

“Elche gets very little funding.

The Arcos del Castillo foundation helps to pay staff wages but it is very difficult,” explained Annette, adding that the home was now a very different place to what it once was. They have managed to get a new kitchen installed, brightened the place up, added new furniture and bought TVs and computers.

The home takes in children aged 11-18, who have been removed from their family unit for whatever reason; some have issues and illnesses but Annette said they all need love and support. “The care and love that the people at the home show them is amazing; they go out as different children.

We have had a number leave over the last year to return home which is great, but of course they take everything with them, so we have to start all over again. A child may come in with just the clothes on their back so we have to clothe and provide for them,” she said.

hairdressing. These are the real success stories.” But Annette admits she could not have done it all alone, saying: “Dave has

been 100 per cent supportive and my heroes are all the helpers and supporters that give up their time and donate. It makes

such a difference; with the money they give we can arrange trips and days out and that gives the children happy memories that they can treasure forever. I have no idea what we have raised over the years.”

Annette had a dream of retiring to Spain, something that was not originally part of her life plan. “We had just brought my ‘forever home’ in Northern Ireland when a girl came into the bank where I worked with photos of the house her parents had just bought in Spain, and I said to Dave, ‘let’s go to Spain’, and we did. I have no regrets. I like the slower way of life and have made some great friends.”

Her retirement may not have happened as Annette now works perhaps harder for the charity than she ever did, but she hopes one day to be able to pass on the reins. But whatever she does, she has left a great legacy in helping improve the lives of many children, showing the generous expat community spirit is alive and well.

The charity is now running its Christmas campaign and will be issuing lists of gifts the children would like, which donations will help to buy.

Inflation could be moving lower Commentary by Moneycorp EUR weekly currency update Data released early last Friday, which showed the economies of France and Germany expanding by 0.3% in the third quarter, were followed by an identical figure for the euro zone as a whole. Inflation in Euroland came in at 0.1% for October, with the ‘core’ reading, which ignores food and energy prices, at 1.1%.

Nevertheless, the minutes of the European Central Bank’s policy meeting revealed concern among governing council members that inflation expectations in the Eurozone could move lower than they would prefer. Investors therefore still expect the ECB to announce fresh stimulus next month.

The expectation of further quantitative easing continues to weight on the euro. Over the last week and month it has been one of the weakest performers. On the week it has lost two thirds of a US cent and is down by one and a half cents against sterling.

USD weekly currency update Data from the States were not as punchy as the dollar’s supporters might have liked. The 0.1% increase in retail sales for October marked a second month of feeble growth and the -0.4% fall in producer prices revealed a third month of static or falling factory gate prices. Inflation picked up a little though: Consumer prices were up by 0.2% in the year to October and the core rate, which ignores the cost of food and energy, was steady at 1.9%. The minutes of the Federal Reserve’s October policy meeting confirmed investors’ expectation that US interest rates are likely to move higher in December but they also implied that subsequent increases would be slow to come.

Investors were given no new reason to buy the dollar. It did pick up two thirds of a cent against the lumbering euro but lost three quarters of a cent to sterling.

The same was true of the -0.1% decline in wholesale sales reported on Thursday. The result was that investors resorted to their default position, leaving the Loonie to track the US dollar.

On Thursday the minutes of September’s US Federal Reserve monetary policy meeting were

positive for most commodity-related currencies.

Whilst they seemed to confirm expectations US interest rates will begin to move higher next month, they also implied subsequent increases will be small and slow to come. But the Loonie failed to benefit because of its close links to the Greenback. It was unchanged on the week against the US dollar and down by nearly a cent against sterling.

AUD weekly currency update The week’s few Australian economic statistics gave investors little to work with. New motor vehicle sales were down by -3.6% in October but up by 4.2% on the year. The minutes of the Reserve Bank of Australia’s monetary policy meeting offered no new insight into the direction and timing of interest rate adjustments. Neither did speeches by two RBS assistant governors shed any light on the matter. Unusually, it was the minutes of the US Federal Reserve policy meeting that had the biggest impact on the Aussie.

Automated rubbish bin for fuel PALMA residents Andy Turton and Pete Ceglinski visited Metstrade last week, the world’s largest marine equipment trade show held in Amsterdam.

They were there to exhibit their Seabin, an automated rubbish bin that catches floating rubbish, oil, fuel and detergents. “We had an amazing time at Metstrade making a lot of new contacts and the overall support for the Seabin project was really positive” said inventor Andy.

The Seabin is a simple and sustainable design and is perfect for marinas and yacht clubs. It sits at the water’s surface and if it is full, it still works, attracting rubbish to it and keeping it there till it’s time to be emptied.

Business partner Pete Ceglinski said “we’re off to France next to see about options for the Seabin.”

Bike ride IN preparation for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women celebrated on November 25, more than 150 Palma residents took to their bicycles last Sunday. They gathered to cycle six kilometres around the city centre in protest against the increasing amount of domestic violence. This was the eighth such protest organised by Pacte Palma.

ON November 24, one day before the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, members of the Balearic parliament remembered the 48 women who have died in Spain this year due to gender violence.

This was carried out by lighting 48 candles and obs e r v i n g o n e m i n u t e ’s s i lence followed by a reading of the parliament’s declaration against gender violence.

The declaration called for action to be taken to improve the lot of women and children who are affected by the behaviour of their partners.

It was noted that since 2005, 21 women in the Balearics have been killed due to such violence.

Those present at the moving ceremony included the President of the Balearics, Francina Armengol, the speaker Xelo Huertas, the mayor of Palma, José Hila, and the national government delegate Teresa Palmer.

Although the death of a single woman is a tragedy, research has shown that Spain is relatively low in the European list of death by such violence.

Some countries in Scandinavia are recorded as being twice as dangerous as Spain.

A festival of improvisation LOCAL theatre company, Trampa Theatre, have been hosting the first international improvisation festival (FiiB) with theatre companies offering 10 days of laughter and fun at various theatres in Palma. Collapsing tower IT HAS been over 20 years since the alarm was raised about the cracks in the Cala Figuera tower in Calvia.

During this time various organisations have brought it to the attention of the authori-

ties given that the tower is of cultural interest and therefore protected by the heritage laws in place.

Alas, nothing has been done and more than half of the tower has collapsed.

Wintry covering on the Tramuntana Mountains TEMPERATURES fell dramatically to below zero IT would appear that winter has finally come to Mallorca, and this time it even brought snow.

The mountains were dusted white marking the end of a mild and sunny autumn as temperatures dropped dramatically last weekend reaching below zero in the Serra de Tramuntana.

Normally, snow only falls for approximately 14 days every per year on the island, and almost never hits the coast, although it is not an unusual sight on the Tramuntana Mountains during winter.

This year for the first time, its highest peak, Puig Major, at 1,445 metres above sea level received about three centime-

tres of snow on Sunday November 22.

The weatherman tells us that it will get marginally warmer again this week but, due to strong winds, the wind chill factor will make it still feel quite cold.

And although the skies will remain clear, there may be some rainfall, even turning to snow above 800 metres.

Waste reduction campaign EUROPEAN Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) is promoting awareness about sustainable resource and waste management this week.

Mallorca’s Environmental Department is encouraging citizens to apply simple steps at home to better manage their household rubbish. Measures include taking one’s own bags going shopping, or buying gifts which aren’t made of a material, such as dinner in a local restaurant or theatre tickets.

Tomorrow, November 27, there will be an event held on Models of Waste Collection in which town councils from Muro, Sóller, Artà and Palma will present their findings. It will take place at the Edifici Club in the Technological Environmental Park in Marratxi.

Christmas treat needed for the poor A FOOD shelter in Palma is requesting turrón, the Spanish nougat traditionally given at Christmastime. Volunteer Dolores from the Caputxin Convent in Palma said: “We have presents to give the children on Christmas Day but we still don’t have any turrón to give the adults.”

The convent feeds around 500 people every day of the year and Christmas is no exception.

Dolores added: “We also provide weekly gro-

ceries for families living in poverty who depend on our services every Monday.” As well as buying food and other necessary items for the homeless and the poor in Palma, the convent helps with medicines, spending between €4,000 and €5,000 every month at pharmacies. “Every bit helps and we are grateful to the support of individuals and companies here on the island who go out of their way to make sure our clients eat on a daily basis.”

Xmas Fair WALDORF infants school in Binissalem will host their annual Christmas fair this Saturday. It starts at noon and will finish at 5pm with plenty to do for all the family including workshops.

Annual Olive Fair celebration CAMAIRI celebrated their annual olive fair last weekend and the Councillor for the Environment, Agriculture and Fisheries, Vicenç Vidal, was there to enjoy the festivities.

Mr Vidal was complimentary about the products and encouraged everyone to buy local this Christmas. Whilst there, homage was paid to Dr Guillem Mateu (1930-2015) and an olive tree was planted in his memory.

New Death Café BINISSALEM will play host to Mallorca’s first Death Café to be held next month.

“The Death Café is a global movement which started in London at which the topic of conversation is death,” explained host Elena Sureda.

“The idea is to normalise this delicate subject in a comfortable atmosphere and everyone is welcome to share their thoughts, concerns and beliefs with no judgement,” she added.

‘Love forever’ boat art CALVIA native, 22-year-old José Servera Vidal, artistically known as Setinsky, has undertaken a rather unusual commission.

He is painting the hull of a 20 metre sailing boat with his art and titles the work ‘Love Forever’. Influenced by Russian artist Kandinski, this artist hopes to achieve international recognition which might be possible if the boat sets sail from Mallorca.

Cross-country challenge success EVENT was organised by Es Raiguer of Inca in collaboration with other clubs LAST week the first of four crosscountry challenges took place. The challenges have been organised by athletics club Es Raiguer of Inca in collaboration with other athletics clubs from around the island.

The race was held in Inca, the recent host for the famous Dijous Bo fair and the event was a huge success and had a positive turnout.

The organiser for the Cross-Country Challenge committee, Josema Ballesteros, said: “I am pleased with the turnout and there were over 300 participants in 18 categories. We gave out lots of prizes and we are grateful to the Inca town council for providing so much in terms of land, police assistance and more.”

The next race will be held in Santa Ponsa on December 5 and there will be time until December 3 to register to take part in the race.

Palma: not just for summer as airlines increase winter flights MEASURES show confidence that the Balearic Islands can deliver as an all-year-round destination TOUR operators and airlines are beginning to realise that the Balearics have become an all-year-round attraction and that it’s not just the summer trade that needs catering for.

New improved flight connections from destinations in the UK are ensuring that Palma becomes more accessible as a year-round destination.

According to Travel weekly.co.uk, the company Jet2 will start its 2016 flights from Leeds Bradford, Manchester and Edinburgh from February and March.

Also, flights from Manchester begin on February 11, every fortnight with an increase to three times a week from March 5, which

w ill le a d in to th e n o rm a l s u mmer time ta b le o f 20 flights a week from May. Services to Mallorca from Leeds Bradford are due to begin on February 26, with a t lea s t tw o flig h ts p e r week, before gradually inc re a s in g to th e ir n o rma l s u mmer s ch ed u le o f 12 times a week.

Starting from March 3, twice-weekly flights from E d in b u rg h w ill a rriv e on Thursdays and Sundays.

This rate will increase to five times a week during the summer.

T h e o v era ll n u mb e r of new flights from the UK during February and March 2016, means that a total capacity of 10,228 extra seats will be available.

Ryanair have stated that throughout the summer next year, they will be increasing the flight frequency from B irmingha m to Pa lma to nine departures a week, as opposed to the one per day of 2015.

In addition, Spanish lowcost carrier Vueling is increasing the number of existing flights from Cardiff to Palma, to three times per week as from March 28, with daily flights in June, July, August and September.

Aer Lingus flights will increase from two to five per week from Belfast City Airport, representing 25,000 more seats for next summer over this year.

Day trippers bring €250m POPULAR all year round, with people visiting friends or relatives and shopping

ALMERIA is one of Andalucia’s favourite destinations for day trips with 17 per cent of the total for Andalucia.

In the past three years, it is estimated that the province has gained €250 million thanks to day trippers.

This type of tourism has come about due to the financial crisis, as many people want to travel but cannot afford to pay for an overnight stay in a hotel and instead come and go, normally by car, on the same day.

Day trippers almost always come from within the province (almost 86 per cent) or neighbouring provinces and tend to take at least nine trips per year, 10 times more than trips with overnight stays. It is also a type of travel which is popular all year round and is often motivated by visiting friends and relatives, shopping or visiting leisure centres. Most of their expenditure is in restaurants, bars and cafeterias, followed by food shopping, with an average of €17 per person at their destination.

The bank reported Spanish banks owed a total of 138.924 billion euros to the ECB in October, which meant a 10.2 per cent fall, 15.864 billion euros less, when compared with the same month a year earlier.

Not quite. Many would-be entrepreneurs think only the most basic preparation is necessary when opening up shop.

In the workplace, the simplest jobs such as that of supermarket shelf-stackers begin with several days training. Hairdressing takes longer whilst doctors never stop learning. One would be amazed, or not, at the number of business owners who never attended a day’s business course in their life. It would never occur to them to do so.

Chambers of Trade and Commerce in the UK offered members support. This was available as training seminars and courses, most free of charge. There was also a supply of supportive literature and hands-on advice.

By applying this principle you will find you improve your life, increase your security and become more prosperous. It is called putting the horse before the cart.

COAL CLOSURE: More gas-fired stations will be built.

By John Smith THE UK’s remaining coal-fired power stations will be shut by 2025 with their use restricted by 2023, according to Energy Secretary Amber Rudd.

Ms Rudd wants more gas-fired stations to be built since relying on ‘polluting’ coal is ‘perverse,’ and with the general run down of the UK coal industry, Britain has to rely heavily on

increasingly expensive imports which are not eco-friendly.

“We need to give a clear signal to people who are in the market for building gas stations that coal will no longer crowd out new gas,” said the Energy Secretary.

At the moment, coal provides around one third of the UK’s electricity, but Ms Rudd said: “We are tackling

a legacy of underinvestment and ageing power stations which we need to replace with alternatives that are reliable, good value for money and help to reduce emissions.”

This follows the recent agreement with China and France to co-fund the building of a nuclear power station at Hinkley Point in Somerset, which has been criticised in many quarters.

AMERICAN hotel chains Marriott International and Starwood Hotels have agreed a $12.2 billion (€11.4 billion) deal to create the world’s biggest hotel company.

The two boards have agreed a takeover, under which Marriott will buy Starwood and the two firms will then have an empire consisting of more than 5,500 hotels with 1.1 million rooms worldwide.

Their nearest rival and formally largest chain is Intercontinental Hotels, which has nearly 5,000 hotels.

The deal will combine Marriott’s 19 brands, including Ritz-Carlton and Fairfield Inn, with Starwood’s Westin, W and St Regis chains, with Marriott paying the bulk of the price in stock and a small part in cash.

It was well known that Starwood was interested in working with another chain and their name was linked to possible deals with Intercontinental and Hyatt Hotels earlier this year.

By John Smith PHARMACEUTICAL companies, US-based Pfizer, which manufactures Viagra, and Irelandbased Allergan, which produces Botox, have announced that they wish to merge to become the largest manufacturer of drugs in the world.

The only problem for the proposed $160 billion (€150 billion) merger is that it will require regulatory approval from the US and that may not be forthcoming as a number of presidential candidates have been vocal about both price increases in pharmaceuticals and corporations attempting to avoid tax by moving their head offices.

The EU has also criticised a number of US corporations including Fiat, Starbucks, Amazon and Google for locating their head offices in countries like Ireland, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, and at the latest G20 meeting in Turkey, the leaders of those countries present agreed that they would ensure that these loopholes are closed.

Pfizer, which recently tried to take over the British company AstraZeneca, has been critical of US corporation tax legislation and made no secret that one of the attractions of the British company was the tax benefits that it expected to gain.

TAX INVERSION: Pfizer, whose headquarters are in Manhattan, want to merge with Ireland-based Allergan. their headquarters to the location of the smaller one. Whilst the US government will almost certainly object strongly, the Irish government is likely to be in favour of the proposed merger.

The US Treasury Department has unveiled new regulations concerning business inversions but

with the forthcoming presidential elections in the US, unless the Democrats end up with a very strong president able to enforce this policy, the regulations may well be ‘toothless’.

If the merger does go ahead, it is very unlikely that there will any significant increase in the price

of the drugs produced by either company as history has shown that massive hikes such as that when the cost of Daraprim tablets was increased from $13.50 (€12.70) to $750 (€705) per tablet were due to takeovers from external investment companies rather than established manufacturers.

Would France show such solidarity?

HOPEFULLY the nation’s historic disregard for the British would change LEAPY LEE SAYS IT

OTHERS THINK IT AS tragic as the Paris attacks were, and utterly sharing the pain and anguish felt by the French nation, I couldn’t help wondering what would have happened had the boot been on the other foot and the attacks happened on British soil.

Would we have received the tremendous influx of sympathy and solidarity from a country that quite frankly seizes every opportunity to let us know just how much they actually dislike us?

Would they have projected the Union Jack on to their prominent buildings or superimposed our flag over their Facebook profiles? In all honesty can you really envisage the French footballers raising their voices in a lusty rendition of God Save the Queen at the start of their premier division matches? Mmmm!

Let’s just hope as this awful event fades a little in their memories, the French think again when they decide to prevent our supplies coming through Calais; try just a little harder to

SEND IN THE ARMY! Let the UK follow Belgium’s example. control the immigrant problem and not be quite so rude when they realise we are English.

And so, as prophesied, the conflict begins.

Belgium, the country that Muslims have bragged will be the first Muslim controlled

country in Europe, has finally, in the wake of the French terrorist attacks, decided to do something about it. They are sending troops into the no-go areas these people have been allowed to create; making arrests across the board and generally conveying to these intruders that their alien culture and ideals will not be accepted quite as easily as they have so far envisaged. Good.

I now suggest Britain does exactly the same. With the latest study revealing that one in every five Muslims is an ISIS sympathiser, I think the scale of the problem should finally be coming home to even the most complacent of ostriches and do-gooders who have whimpered us into the position where we now find ourselves.

Send in the army! Root out the suspects and hope that their fellow conspirators take up arms. Bring the whole thing to a head. ‘Martyr’ as many as possible and let us all get back to the tranquillity of our own culture and peaceful existence.

As Leapy Lee said... What on earth are they thinking?

I WAS in Benidorm for the festival and worked there for many years in the music business until 2011. I read your articles regularly and, although you proved to be right on many occasions, I was always amazed by the do-gooders who fervently disagreed with you.

After your article this week I wonder what they will say now after the atrocities in Paris. I’ve been espousing the same theories about the ‘refugees’ but being a Londoner living in Ireland not much notice was taken of me.

Now it’s been proven that at least two of these terrorists came through Lesbos; well, as you say, what on earth are they thinking?

I fear though Leapy we’re fighting a losing battle. ISIS are already here thanks to the do-gooders. They have the audacity to call us racist and, I fear, a lot of the do-gooders are in the media. They should share the blame for the bloodbath in Paris.

Naive talk CREDIT where credit is due, I was poised to do the unthinkable and that was to agree with Leapy Lee on his article about Loose Women, until I saw Mike’s letter on bad service in the Letters page last week.

His final sentence, and I quote: “That’s what you get when you give workers too many rights,” made me laugh out loud. What an antiquated opinion!

I know, let’s get Correos to go back to deliveries on donkeys. Tie those workers with too many rights to the gun carriage wheels and flog them to within an inch of their lives, if any mistakes are made.

Without even knowing the incident he’s prattling on about, his crass assessment of the workers in this day and age is a testament to the writer’s lack of management skills to even talk like that, and is naive, to say the least.

A history of helping READERS comment frequently on the subject of immigrants from both Europe, ‘EU’ and elsewhere, often taking an ‘anti’ stance.

Is geography and history no longer taught in our schools? Firstly, those from the war-torn Middle East. How can caring and humanitarian individuals not want to give refuge from the horrors of the dreadful wars in Syria and Afghanistan? For sure, there will be an element we can do without; however, the majority genuinely need the help offered within Britain and the other EU countries.

Comments from the ‘against brigade’ are many and varied such as: ‘Charity begins at home’, ‘many homeless and hungry’, ‘unemployment’, etc. I honestly feel that these shallow excuses reflect the rantings of the extreme right, or just plain ignorance.

Britain has a long history of assisting those in need, particularly from Eastern Europe and indeed worldwide.

Let us not forget the many people from our Commonwealth of Nations who laid down their lives to maintain our way of life and culture.

Do those who are against our help to those in need, recall the days of our involvement in creating the map of the Middle East? Do they ever consider how it came about that circa half the world speaks English as their first language? Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, Pacific Islands, South America (Guyana), Central America (Belize), all of North America/Canada, India, etc!

What a rich cultural heritage immigrants from all over the world have given to Britain. Find a place in your hearts for those who genuinely need our help.

Remember, we imposed our religion, our language, and our culture on a worldwide basis. We have the capacity to absorb a little bit of others. Kebabs or curry tonight?

But why should that be so? We are surely not seeking to rescind the common market membership, as it applies to trade, only the political union aspects of membership. The public generally has no desire to go in deeper and

wishes to be free of being run by unelected civil servants controlled by Germany and France, both of whom have a history of attempted colonisation of the continent.

There is surely no risk of the EU imposing tariffs on UK imports. Trade is two-way and neither Germany nor

France can wish to see retaliation tariffs in the UK on, for instance, cars, where the UK is a very major market for companies like Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Porsche, Volkswagen and Renault.

Ticket waste Re: Caminito del Rey FRIENDS of mine visited the walk last week with prior reservations and were surprised to find it practically deserted, yet would-be walkers were being turned away as they had no prebooked times. Despite the demand it seems the lack of availability is entirely due to the tickets having been allocated to the local restaurants, who are failing to pass them on to the public.

What a disgrace!

I have managed to get four tickets for late November, the limit for any one booking, but was not able to get any for November 6 when I had visitors keen to do this walk. It is showing fully booked, but I now wonder if there really will be any takers or if the tickets will be sitting in a restaurant somewhere wasted.

I really think this is an issue that should be investigated and shown up for what it is. One has to wonder if the restaurants are paying for their monopoly of what is an essentially free attraction.

France help?

Re: France and the Falklands INTERESTING that France is requesting help from the EU in this matter. How did France help the UK in the ‘conflict’ over the Falklands? If memory serves me right, France assisted the Argentinians by selling them Exocet missiles (used to sink our warships) via a third party.

ISIS must be rooted out and destroyed, but surely France could make the gesture of apologising to the families of the British servicemen killed by Exocets in the Falklands?

IT has been many years since I last picked up a fishing rod in anger.

As a young man, my greatest influence was Bernard Venables, the famous naturalist, angler and author who, through his writings and art, taught me to observe and love the wonderful world of the English countryside.

I was fortunate to have the River Kennet on my doorstep and during the summer months, I would often rouse myself early on a Sunday morning, and while the blackbirds were still snoring and having wormy dreams, I made my way ea-

But angling meant much more to me than simply catching fish and as the greatest of all anglers, Izaac Walton, once described the river bank, ‘the quietest and fittest place for contemplation.’ How true.

Perhaps I should dust off my tackle, but I doubt it would be quite the same now.

Another civil war?

WITH the terrible events of the last two weeks, public attention has drifted away from the Catalan parliament’s bid to declare independence from Spain, but are there potentially real similarities between the situation in Catalonia and the situation with ISIS? At the end of the day, what is going to happen over the next 18 months?

Looking forward, could there be a compromise between whichever party is elected to run Spain, whereby there is greater self-government for the area, will there be a referendum, will there be a granting of independence or more likely will the Spanish government simply refuse to allow it to happen?

It will by then be just over 80 years since the start of the Spanish Civil War. The logical conclusion to the meeting of an irresistible force and an immovable object is frightening as the only way to stop the independence movement.

Depending upon the view of the person naming them, those who resist are either terrorists or freedom fighters, and those they are resisting are either invaders or legitimate forces of authority.

In the previous century, the West saw some very brutal regimes which massacred millions, but the one difference between our governments today and the jihadists is that by and large, we have learned from the mistakes of the past whilst ISIS just doesn’t care and seems set on slaughtering for the sake of it.

Vehicle transfers following a death AS part of a new series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

TRANSFER: There is a standard administrative procedure to follow.

IN the event of a vehicle owner passing away, there is a standard procedure for having the vehicle ownership transferred.

Immediately after a death, the vehicle can be transferred to a new owner who may not be the long-term benefactor, but who may seek ownership on a temporary basis.

In this event, the temporary custodian of the vehicle has 90 days in which they must notify the traffic department of this temporary custody and their legal address.

The person registering the vehicle must produce documents to the traffic department including payment for transfer (prices in 2015 are €52.80 for most vehicles, €26.40 for mopeds), identity documents, death certificate of the original owner or marriage certificate stating the death, document proving possession of the vehicle, driving licence and ITV card.

The intended permanent vehicle owner

must apply for the final transfer of the vehicle within a 90-day period.

The intended permanent owner must submit the same documents but with two additions: certificate of liquidation or exemption from inheritance tax and declaration of heirs, or will, accompanied by a certificate of wills, or document stating the award of the vehicle.

You must request a printed official form that will facilitate the transfer of the vehicle by the traffic department on behalf of the state. You have to pay fees for the transfer.

If the applicant is foreign, there are other processes. The official identity of the country of origin must also be presented. You may also have to produce the original document attesting to your home in Spain if you do not have foreign identity documents.

The process is a standard administrative procedure and so your advisor or lawyer will be able to advise you further.

Special assistance not so special for some Mike Senker

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I HAVE a very rare neurological disorder called Primary Orthostatic Tremor (Google it). This means that when I travel I have to use a wheelchair.

Some airports are fantastic with the way that they handle people that need special assistance, Malaga being one of the best I’ve ever used. The two worst that I’ve encountered are Heathrow and Madrid.

On Saturday I was flying home from London. I get to the airport two and a half hours before the flight, at their request and check in.

That’s ok, it gives me time to have a cuppa.

So I check in (I’m travelling alone) and they tell me to sit in an area where there is another passenger. I go over and say hi. People in wheelchairs do that, it’s like a club.

She looks miffed so I ask what’s the matter and she tells me she has been waiting for 20 minutes and is on the same flight as me. I ask the BA lady if they have called special assis-

tance to which she says yes. I ask where the desk is and am informed it’s on the second floor which is crazy as it makes it impossible to go direct to the special assistance desk .

BA were very good. They kept calling but nothing. What happens is that you get put on a list and as long as they get you there before the gate closes they don’t care. Job done!

It’s bad enough you are dependent on someone else, but to be treated like cargo is degrading. In Madrid they put all the wheelchair punters in a room like cattle. Just lots of people in wheelchairs looking at each other.

To be fair at Heathrow BA were embarrassed and kept calling and when we did get moved they sent us to the BA lounge and gave us brekkie, with only five minutes to spare.

Here’s how it should work. Put special assistance on the ground floor so we can go straight there and get help to check cases in as it’s very hard to wheel yourself in a chair with two cases.

At Heathrow it costs £20 (€28) to get from a cab to the desk with a porter. Then they should get you through security so you can do what ‘normal’ people do, have a cuppa and look round the shopping centre that used to be an airport, or don’t ask me to be there two to three hours before flight closes!

AS a trainer is it often an interesting experience being able to identify the areas that are essentially preventing clients from reaching their goals.

Of course I hope that everyone has a personal goal to reach, if not how would we ever turn up for training on a Monday morning or find the motivation to push through on the ‘not so upbeat days?’

The majority of my fitness clients have similar goals such as weight loss or maintenance, some are actually slender to the eye, but desire tone and muscular definition. Sometimes due to their profession, they have body imbalances that need strengthening or correcting.

After years of working with both men

and women I can pinpoint the requirements most of them have, and I am able to combine programmes to suit their abilities and help them achieve their goals.

I never fail to notice in my group classes, the clients that give 110 per cent effort and the clients that give 65. They have the same goals and desires, however some are willing to put in the full effort required to achieve great results.

So who do you think is getting the results at the end of the month when we do weigh in and measurements?

Of course it is the 110 per cent effort clients that have pushed themselves that bit further.

The reason I brought up this topic is, whether you train in a gym or on your own, there comes a time when you need to raise your own effort bar.

Researchers said this study indicated the ‘strongest evidence yet’ of students eating breakfast and the quality of the breakfast.

I’VE heard about fibromyalgia and wondered if that could be my problem, but my doctor says it doesn’t exist. Does it?

Fibromyalgia is a controversial condition, and for many years it wasn’t considered to be a real illness.

Today there is quite a lot of evidence that it does exist. Therefore as a specialist in internal medicine, I recognise its existence although many of my colleagues remain unsure.

If it exists, what is it?

It is a disorder characterised by joint and muscular pain, accompanied by extreme tiredness.

Its causes are unknown although there are probably a series of conditions behind it including genetics.

What are the symptoms?

Along with joint and muscle pain and tiredness, symptoms include difficulty sleeping, morning stiffness, headaches, painful menstruation, tingling or numb feeling in hands and feet, forgetfulness and trouble concentrating.

How can it be treated?

Fibromyalgia can be difficult to treat. It is important to find a doctor who is familiar with the condition and its treatment.

Sometimes teamwork is needed. This includes your doctor, a physiotherapist and possibly other health providers as well.

Medication includes pain relief and anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxers, antidepressants etc, although moderate daily physical exercise is just as important and activities such as swimming and dancing are advised. Psychological therapy can also help channel emotions.

So will exercise help rather than making pains worse?

Moderate, daily exercise will really help improve fibromyalgia symptoms.

What about diet?

Although nothing has been proven, my opinion is that diet is very important.

A balanced diet with plenty of fruit and veg helps maintain a balance between mind and body which helps sufferers.

Is there a cure or is it forever?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition which does not have a cure. The best thing to do is find a treatment that works as well as possible and combine it with diet adjustments and daily exercise to keep symptoms under control.

Ditch sugar and white carbohydrates Foods high in sugar can cause spikes in insulin levels and blood sugar crashes that may encourage cravings and fat storage. Check food labels and look out for hidden sugars that appear under other names such as corn sugar, dextrose or molasses.

He decided that even though he likes his job as a security guard, he really needed a break from the cold. Surfing the web for ideas he happened upon ‘housesitting’ as an idea.

Having spent summers helping out on a local farm as a shepherd, he was very used to caring for animals of all shapes and sizes. When he registered on HouseSitMatch.com he found a lovely housesit with three pets in Marbella, Spain.

For Rocky, Campy and Tiger having Bragi care for them at home really is best, they don’t like too many routine changes.

Difficult lessons to learn as a child THE whirlwind that is rushing through our lives now is a man-made disaster and one we need to halt Vicki McLeod

Family Matters WE’RE worrying about a lot of things right now. We’re probably right to.

This week I saw that an American company called Pro Techt had started selling something called a ‘Bulletproof Blanket’ which is being bought specifically by parents for their children to shield them from bullets at school.

My response? It made my blood run cold: how terrible for children around the world that they should not be able to even study and learn without threat or danger. The Bodyguard Blanket, according to its website, ‘is made of the same materials US soldiers wear while in battle, and is equal to or exceeds the protection used by police departments. After extensive research, it is estimated that Bodyguard™ blanket provides bullet resistant protection against 90 per cent of all weapons that have been used in school shootings in the United States.’

much bigger than any other burgeoning bumps and Mrs McCann slowly read our names out (I knew she was a sadist before I even knew the meaning of the word). A fire drill was something you did to appease the Health

and Safety monitor and it was a pain, nothing more. Now children are being taught how to react in the event of a shooting in their school. Will this new practice extend to our schools? Can we even imagine our world like this?

Have you worked out yet how you can make a difference? It seems to me we have to communicate more and more with each other, not less. We have to find ways to understand and respect differences, but stand up to and stop intimidation. In our current world situation do we really know that much about the politics and motivations or are we just reading what someone else is posting on Facebook? Could be time to get an education and start really learning about other people’s cultures.

I’m privileged I can write this short article from the perspective of complete horror rather than with a world weary sigh as I pull out my credit card and buy one of the blankets (priced at a thousand dollars) for my daughter.

The manufacturers say they originally designed the blankets as a portable way to shelter in tornadoes or other natural phenomenon. The whirlwind that is rushing through our lives now is a man-made disaster, and one we need to find ways to halt. Malala Yousafzai said “Let us pick up our books and pencils. They are our most powerful weapon.” Let’s start there.

In association with the Casa Museu Foundation, this app takes the listener on a tour of the literary side of Mallorca, learning about many well-known writers who visited the island and were inspired by its beauty. Robert Graves and George Sand are renowned visitors but perhaps not so well known is

Agatha Christie, who also visited.

Staying in Mallorca couldn’t be easier, from luxury hotels both inland and on the coast, to self-catering in hotels or renting a property to suit one’s budget. Hostels and small town hotels offer a wide choice to the intrepid traveller. In the past year or so, travel companies like Airbnb and Couchsurfing have provided an alternative with many inhabitants, both local and foreign, hosting visitors in their own homes.

Entertainment is another feature of the island and along with the top quality shows available at Son Amar and Pirates, the island has an incredible bank of talented musicians playing year round. Movie-goers have the independent cinema Cine Ciutat in Palma, which offers a sophisticated selection for the more discerning viewer.

Ocimax, also in Palma, occasionally plays live streaming shows from Lon-

don’s West End, making a night out on the town a wonderful occasion.

Perhaps the best reason of all for making Mallorca the best place in the world is its constant stream of fiestas.

Every week on the island there will be a town or a village celebrating something or other. Binissalem needs to be visited every September where one can enjoy the two-week- long wine festival. Visit Palma in January and enjoy the saint’s day for San Sebastian with

live music playing all over the city, and tasty barbecues. Caimari is the place to visit for olives in November and while there make sure you pick up a bottle of olive oil. If you like wild mushrooms, then the little village of Mancor de la Vall is your host this weekend.

Mallorca may not be the best kept secret it used to be, but it is still one of the most unique places on the planet to visit and to live.

EV charge spots for summit THE Renault-Nissan Alliance is installing 90 new charge spots for electric vehicles in and around Paris for the COP21 global summit on climate change, further emphasising their push toward electric powered cars in Europe.

The installation is being done in partnership with French energy provider EDF, Schneider Electric, and SNCF, France’s national rail company.

As if that wasn’t big enough news for the small start-up, the bigger news is Energica’s aim is to go public, eventually offering its company shares on the London Stock Market.

Swiss global financial services have been hired to help Energica get things prepared as they begin to look for private investment to raise the necessary free capital in order to be listed on the Stock Exchange’s AIM Italia submarket.

They hope to raise more capital to expand and grow its business by selling approximately €20 million worth of stock if and when it finally

lands on AIM. With other electric motorcycle firms getting absorbed into large manufacturing companies or going to the wind

in recent months, it’s good to see a company like Energica make it this far.

Fiat America boss Olivier Francois said, “The characteristics of the car are similar to the original 124 Spider. Half of the car is an engine produced in Italy making it a super fun-to-drive car.”

Even with the turbo and intercooler adding weight to the fiat, it will still perform better than the most powerful 2.0litre powered MX-5.

By John Smith DAVEY du Plessis the adventurer and environmentalist who was shot and very nearly died whilst navigating the Amazon river in a kayak, has decided to attempt a crossing of the Southern Atlantic from South Africa to Rio de Janeiro, on a pedalpowered boat which his uncle built for him.

The 27-year old and his mother, Robyn Wolff, 50, will attempt the more than 4,000mile crossing to draw attention to environmental issues for which he is a great proponent.

They expect the trip in the ped-

alo named Vaquita to take between three and five months, at an average speed of 2.5 knots, depending on the weather.

He has written in his blog that he chose the pedalo design after looking into designs for rowboats often used in Atlantic and other ocean crossings. “Not only did a pedal boat seem as having the most efficient propulsion system, it also allowed me to have a cockpit within the boat and cover from the elements, meaning that I wasn’t exposed to the unforgiving ocean conditions,” he said.

The boat is named after a rare and endangered species of

porpoise found off the coast of California, and is designed to self-right if it capsizes. The attempt by Du Plessis and his mother will be the first to depart from South Africa and the first by a team of two attempting to cross the South Atlantic non-stop from east to west under human power.

On the side of the vessel are a number of references to what is known as the Holocene or sixth extinction, the ongoing mass extinction of species caused mainly by human activity which includes the Dodo and the Falkland Islands Warrah (a foxlike creature).

A NEW group, the Cutty Sark 2Sail Foundation, which is a not for profit organisation, has been formed consisting of a number of tall ship enthusiasts as well as shipbuilders who want to raise sufficient funds to allow them to build an exact replica of the Cutty Sark.

Their initial goal is to raise $120,000 (€112,000) through the inevitable crowdfunding campaign which would cover the cost of producing the actual scale design for the vessel. Once that hurdle has been conquered, they will then need to raise an estimated £20 million+ (€28 million) in order to build the ship.

BRITISH enthusiast Bob Salmon conceived the idea of a mini-transAtlantic race in the late 1970s, wishing to promote affordable offshore solo racing as he wanted to see an opportunity for sailors with a moderate budget to be able to take part in ocean racing.

The Mini 6.50 (measuring 6.5 metres in length) is very short for transAtlantic ocean use and is beamy, being nearly half as wide as it is long, which me a ns tha t unde r c e rta in c irc umstances the yacht can sail extremely quickly.

Although the concept was developed in the UK, the running of the race has been adopted by the French who are the main competitors.

This year ’s race ran from Douarnenez in France via Lanzarote to Guadeloupe. Frederic Denis smashed the record for the time taken to cover the 4,020 mile s dis ta nc e by ne a rly three days, managing the journey in just 19 days and 23 hours.

New head of port operations for Volvo Ocean Race IT WAS announced in Alicante on November 25 that Australian born Richard Mason, four-time Volvo Ocean Race sailor and the man who led the shore crew for Team SCA women’s team in the last edition, has been appointed the event’s Head of Port Operations.

Mason, 41, will be responsible from the race’s side for the running of all the ports for the next edition in 2017-18 and be personally overseeing half of them, with Adolfo Rodriguez taking care of the others.

“We’ll very much run an engaged, flat management,” he said.

“We’ll get the right people for the right roles and run a very tight team, where everyone is very much empowered to run their areas.

“It’s no different from a team taking part in the race – you’ve got to get the right people,” he continued.

For the ever-smiling Mason, this will also be a real labour of love. “The harsh brutality of the Volvo Ocean Race is that it’s a life sentence,” he said, only half-joking.

“There’s no two ways to approach or look at it any other way. When you’re in it, you’re fully in. It’s a crime of passion and that’s what makes it unique. ”It’s bizarre, it’s mad – but it’s brilliant.

“My family was closely associated with some of the crew of Ceramco (New Zealand) and Lion (New Zealand), and as a young boy at the ripe old age of about seven, I have photos of me hanging off the wheel on Ceramco in Auckland. I was hooked.” Mason concluded.

THE terrorists came, they saw, they murdered. Europe welcomed refugees with open arms (at the invitation of the German Chancellor. Thanks, Mrs Merkel!), and some have done what they came to do. It’s doubtful the Paris attacks will be the final atrocity.

Disaffected Muslims, Europe’s open borders and the migrant crisis are all creating the perfect storm, terror experts warn.

And here’s the evidence: Open borders undoubtedly prompt the most enterprising people from the poorest, least secure nations to emigrate in droves to the wealthiest, safest countries (at least two of the Paris attack-

So the question is: If this isn’t a game changer after the tragedies in Tunisia, Ankara, Sharm el-Sheikh, etc, what is? Even more deadly, coordinated attacks against a major European city with an even greater loss of life.

Meanwhile, what’s to be done? I’ve

written before about the need to stabilise fragile states like Syria, Iraq, etc.

As for the UK, we all know that more border control staff, a tighter immigration policy, refusing the re-entry of radicalised fighters (450, reportedly) returning from Syria, introducing ID cards for everyone, increasing police numbers and reversing the cuts imposed on Britain’s armed forces would be a good place to start.

The establishment should pull their collective finger out, pass the Government’s Snooper’s Charter now, or London will be next.

Baleares Senior League EL TORO RC and RC Ponent met in Son Caliu in very windy conditions on Saturday afternoon, where the home team quickly gained the upper hand although RC Ponent defended hard.

A converted try for El Toro RC after ten minutes gave them the advantage but unfortunately the referee decided to suspend the match because of a dangerous netting fence that was falling down and becoming a hazard in the gusty conditions. The match will be concluded at a later date with the score of seven points to zero carried over.

In the match between Shamrock RFC and Menorca TRUC, the home team won their first of the season.

The team from Menorca were first to put points on the scoreboard with a penalty kick early in the game. Once

Shamrock RFC scored the first of their three tries they stayed ahead. By half time the score was a close 14 points to 13. Although both teams benefited from a strong pack of forwards, Menorca was superior in the scrums.

This was balanced by better play from the three quarters of the home team who were able to move the ball out wide and from side to side, to give their wings a chance to break through and score and making it difficult for the Menorquins to defend. The final score was 21 points to 13.

The combined team of Corsaris and Dimonis hosted Bahia RC in windy conditions on Saturday. The home team began strongly and within 20 minutes had scored four tries although Bahia RC tried their hardest to defend.

Strong winds affect local rugby

RUGBY DAY: Every day sees more children taking part. team were given two yellow cards during the second half reducing the team to 14 players each time, but unfortu-

nately Bahia RC was unable to capitalise. The locals had sufficient reserves to make team changes and went

on to win by 44 points to seven.

Third leg for Under 18 teams in the Baleares League.

The two teams competing in this league got together on Saturday afternoon to battle it out for the third leg.

This game, unlike the previous, saw lots of kicking and scrums due to the errors created during play. It was a much closer game than in previous meetings with RC Ponent taking their third win by only 17 points to 12.

Under 14 League and fourth Rugby Day. Organised by Agora Portals, it saw more than 200 boys and girls playing in rugby matches from the youngest at Under six to the Under 12’s.

Every rugby day sees more children joining in and enjoying and benefiting from the values of the sport.
