Costa says NO to violence COSTA BLANCA NORTH
By Eleanor Hawkins International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was held yesterday (Wednesday 25) and towns all over the Costa del Sol and the rest of Spain have been holding events to mark the event. Marbella was just one of the places where a minute’s silence was held and manifestos read out against gender violence.
“We want to let victims know they’re not alone, we are all there for them and there is hope,” said Equality Councillor Ana Leschiera. The problem is one which, far from being solved, is increasing and so far this year in Spain, 48 women have died at the hands of their partners or exes, 10 of them in Andalucia and three in Malaga Province. The Andalucian Women’s
Institute has reported more than 5,200 gender violencerelated queries this year, suggesting many women are suffering in silence. In fact, Spanish government delegate in Malaga Jose Luis Ruiz Espejo said this week, domestic violence has become a pandemic, which according to the United Nations affects one third of the women in the world.
