PLANNED OPERATION: Police raided Paris apartment in the early morning of November 18.

By John Smith AS part of a planned operation, police raided an apartment in the Paris suburb of StDenis in the early morning of November 18 in the search for Abdelhamid Abaaoud, a Belgian jihadist who is suspected of being a main participant in Friday’s assaults.

Seven people including at least one woman whose identities are not yet known

were arrested during the operation. Another woman who it is believed was a cousin of Abdelhamid Abaaoud, detonated a suicide vest, and a second person, said to be a terrorist was shot and killed by police whilst a bystander was wounded.

At the time of going to press, there were unconfirmed reports that Abdelhamid Abaaoud is the person who was shot.

Heavy gunfire was reported from the

scene for several hours before the arrests were made and at least five police officers were wounded following the explosion whilst a police dog was killed.

It is now believed there was another suspect involved in last week’s massacres in Paris which would bring the total to nine people of which seven are dead and the other two, including Salah Abdeslam are ‘on the run.’

By John Smith IN the same way that so many people stated ‘Je Suis Charlie’ after the Charlie Hebdo tragedy, city councils and governments around the world decided to show their solidarity with the people of Paris by decorating iconic buildings with the colours of the French Tricolor, blue, white and red.

Whilst the Eiffel Tower may have been plunged into darkness, buildings in every part of the world from Australia to Gibraltar, America to Brazil, Israel to Mexico, Spain to Albania, China to UK, all registered their support.

A MAN, 79, died when his car was hit by a train on a level crossing near the Verge de Lluc station in Palma.

Initial investigations suggest that the safety barriers did not come down to alert drivers that a train was about to pass. Witnesses and residents in the area say that this had been a problem for several weeks.

The police and Mallorca Railway Services are viewing recordings from two cameras at the level crossing and it is known that the train was travelling 70 per cent slower than the maximum permitted speed in that area.

The accident occurred when the victim crossed the path of the train heading to Manacor.

Several people called the emergency services and the Local and National Police and firemen arrived on the scene.

stantly. The train driver was taken to a health centre as he was in shock. The passengers on the train were uninjured and were evacuated. The railway service was cut off and buses were provided so the passen-

gers could reach their destinations.

The tracks were reopened approximately two hours later.

The Mallorca Railway Services have offered their condolences to the victim’s relatives.

Monitor is beat unconscious A YOUTH, 15, was arrested by Local Police in Nazaret after beating a monitor unconscious with a fire extinguisher at a centre for young offenders.

The youth was reportedly arguing

with a girl when the monitor stepped in.

He became agitated and hit the monitor with the extinguisher, causing him to fall on the sofa.

When police arrived, the victim was s t i l l d a z e d a n d c o u l d n ’t r e m e m b e r what had happened. His attacker attempted to leave the building but he was detained by police.

Dogs allowed on buses PALMA City Hall has extended the permission for dogs to travel on buses to four more routes.

According to the Councillor for Mobility, Joan Ferrer, dogs will now also be able to travel on routes 1, 3, 15 and 21.

Dogs are already allowed on routes 20, 30 and 2, as the EMT (Municipal Transport Company) was the first in Spain to allow the measure, which is being followed by Zaragoza, Santiago de Compostela, Madrid and Barcelona. The plan is to extend the measure to all EMT routes in Palma.

The service is currently in the experimental stage and could be changed to meet demand. Since the first bus was opened to dogs in November 2013 on route 30, ticket sales have risen constantly.

A WOMAN sustained a spinal injury after falling off a horse on a property in Andratx. Her colleague alerted the emergency services as the woman was unable to move. She was taken by ambulance to Son Espases Hospital.

Lifeboats vandalised as they lie in car park TWO of the lifeboats from the Sorrento ship, which caught fire off the Balearic Islands in April, have been targeted by thieves recently. They have been in the car park of the port’s bus station for months.

Palma resident dies in Paris attacks HIS parents had been using social networks to try and find him

INNOCENT VICTIM: Palma resident Sven Alejandro Silva Perugini was killed at the Bataclan.

A VENEZUELAN resident of Palma, Sven Alejandro Silva Perugini, has been confirmed to be amongst those who died in the Bataclan Concert Hall attack.

He and his colleague and compatriot, Alfredo Reyes, were at the concert last Friday and his family had not heard from him since. They had

used social networking sites to attempt to find him, but his mother confirmed on Tuesday that he was amongst the victims. The news was also announced by Venezuelan President, Nicolas Maduro.

Reyes was uninjured and had remained in Paris searching for Sven Alejandro. A third friend who lives in France was shot in the stomach but following an operation is said to be out of danger.

The main institutions of the Balearic Islands, led by the regional government, held events including a minute’s silence on Monday at midday to condemn the terrorist attacks in Paris.

They expressed their solidarity towards the victims, their relatives and the whole of France.

The president of the regional government, Francina Armengol, condemned the attacks on her Twitter account and called on residents of the islands and representatives of its institutions to do the same.

There were also messages condemning the attacks from the Twitter account of Palma City Hall.

The French Consul in Palma, Michel Magnier, has thanked residents of the islands for their solidarity, saying that the French “do not feel alone.” He attended an event organised by the Lycee Français in Palma which ended with teachers and pupils singing La Marseillaise.

Other events were held at the High Court of Justice and at Palma Provincial Court, outside Palma City Hall and the Government Delegation building, where the delegate for the Balearic Islands, Teresa Palmer, reminded people that the Balearic Islands was on a Level 4 terrorist attack alert.

Meanwhile, the Balearic Taekwondo team, with nine people aged between 16 and

23, and two monitors, are ‘trapped’ in Paris. They were there to take part in the International Open representing Spain but it was suspended for safety reasons, according to the Balearic Taekwondo Federation.

The team have been unable to change their flights and remain in a hotel because they have been told it is safer than going out. They have all checked in with their families and are in good health.

Police have increased surveillance at Palma Airport, the port and large shopping areas, as Spain remains at Level 4 for risk of terrorist attacks.

National and Local Police, Guardia Civil and the Army have all been told to tighten security with more checks.

According to a report in local Spanish daily Diario de Mallorca, there will be surveillance surrounding gas tanks and electrical stations.

CONTROVERSIAL: Es Pinaret centre for young offenders criticised for deficient safety measures.

Funds approved for work to improve Es Pinaret THE Balearic Government has approved a special amount of €548,515 to start work on the enlargement of the Es Pinaret centre for young offenders.

Last month, a 17-year-old intern died there in a fire and there have been other dangerous events involving minors at the

centre, which Guardia Civil investigations have revealed had very deficient safety measures.

More money will be invested in 2016 and 2017, to a total of €2 million, said government spokesman, Marc Pons. The Social Services Department has also pro-

vided €70,000 so that reinforcement staff can be paid to remain at the centre until the end of the year. There are 11 monitors and a psychologist in total. The aim is to have 64 places for young offenders by 2018, as there are currently 62 minors for 46 official places.

Lights, camera, Health centres to action in Calvia stay open until 8pm FROM December 1, health centres in the Balearics will stay open until 8pm.

This has been decided unilaterally by the Health Service as it is was not approved by social agents or first aid workers, who say that it has not been made clear how human resources or materials will be made available, nor how the timetables will be increased.

However, the Health Service said that the budget for 2016 has been increased by €9 million to hire more staff and cover leave. The government also said the longer opening times would allow working people to get appointments with doctors or nurses without having to go to the emergency room.

Man hit on crossing dies later in hospital A MAN in his 60s died after he was involved in a collision with a car in Palma. He was crossing Calle Joan Maragall on a pedestrian crossing when he was hit by a car driven by a 46-year-old woman who had not been drinking.

It appeared that the man was not seriously injured, however, he had a heart attack and although a police officer was able to resuscitate him and take him to the Juaneda Clinic, he died there shortly afterwards. Local Police are handling the investigation.

A WOMAN from Manacor gave birth to her daughter at home, assisted by her husband who was guided on the phone by an emergency doctor based in Palma.

The couple called the emergency services when the woman, whose pregnancy had come to term, went into labour. A doctor guided them through the birth with instructions which the baby’s father followed exactly and both mother and baby were perfectly healthy. An ambulance was sent to their home and they were taken to Manacor Hospital.

PALMA Council plans to keep the city centre as an Area of Major Tourist Influx so that shops can open 365 days a year and even intends to open City Hall on Saturdays and Sundays to make the city more dynamic.

The last of the rubbish imports NO more consignments from abroad for Son Reus plant

By John Smith MALLORCA Island Council has permanently put an end to importing refuse to be incinerated at the Son Reus plant.

This will keep some 120,000 tonnes of rubbish from Italy and Ireland from arriving on the island, and according to the Councillor for the Environment, Sandra Espeja, it will not require any payment of compensation or lead to a rise in fees.

She said that the final decision is supported by legal and financial reports and is approved by the Balearic Regional Government.

Meanwhile, the conservative Partido Popular (PP) councillor, Catalina Soller, argued that the only reason

why fees for processing refuse on the island can remain the same next year is thanks to the money made from importing rubbish for incineration.

Soller was formerly the head of the environmental department and said that only 20,000 tonnes of rubbish will be prevented from arriving on the island, not 120,000 as the Consell reported. This is because 100,000 tonnes which were due to arrive from Rome had still not been given the go-ahead by the Italian Government.

Repeal law AROUND 100 people gathered in front of the Government Delegation building in Palma to protest against the abortion law and demand the State Government abolish it. It coincided with other protests in Spain.

Cable plans BALEARIC President Francina Armengol has promised parents of children at the Norai School in Alcudia that they will be included in the final decision regarding changes to the route planned for electrical cables in the area.

Cost probe PALMA City Hall has demanded an investigation into the amount of money spent by the former team in the local government between 2010 and 2013 on uniforms for the Local Police, almost €2 million.

Lost trippers FOUR day-trippers, one of them a seven-year-old boy, had to be rescued by firefighters and Guardia Civil after they got lost in the Tramuntana Mountains. They were airlifted to safety in good health.

Prison stay A PALMA judge has ruled that two women, aged 43 and 47, should stay on remand in prison where they have been since their arrest in April for committing fraud by promising to perform witchery for people in exchange for money.

Infanta will be last to appear in court THE Infanta Cristina will be the last of the 18 people charged in the Noos case to testify before the court.

If she is not exonerated before the trial begins in January, she may be called as a witness.

He is charged with influence peddling, diverting funds, embezzlement, fraud, falsehood, crimes against the tax department and money laundering.

The robbery took place at around 7pm on Friday at a jewellery shop when it was open and there was at least

one employee inside. Three people arrived on two motorbikes which they parked nearby.

Two of them entered the shop without removing their helmets while the third rem ai ned i n t he door way, blocking it. They smashed the shop windows and took

all of the jewellery which was on show before fleeing on the motorbikes, which wer e l ocat ed at a near by beach.

Man facing prison for attempted manslaughter A MAN is facing eight years in prison for allegedly attempting to kill another by running him over with his car in Palma, in April 2013.

The two were travelling in the vehicle in the Coll d’en Rabassa area when they argued and the passenger decided to get out.

The accused attempted to stop him from doing s o, but the vic tim put t he hand brake on and after a struggle, he eventual-

ly managed to get out of the car.

He was then injured when the driver ran into him on the pavement and he flew through the air and landed against another vehicle.

The driver allegedly threatened to kill him and is charged with attempted manslaughter. He may have to pay €450 in compensation to the victim and €607 to the owner of a car which was damaged.

Memorial plaque removed by vandals THE mother of a young man, who died from elect ro c u t i o n when he touched a lamp post during festivities in Bunyola, has said that a plaque in his memory at the local c e m e t e r y h a s b e e n re moved.

She reported to the Local Police that the flowers they had left for him had a l s o b e e n t h ro w n t o t h e floor and stamped on.

The family was informed by the town hall’s Councillor for the Environment that the plaque had been removed.

His mother suspects that the culprits are supporters of the Partido Popular who, she said, lost the elections due to the scandal over his death.

Mallorca boasts the highest occupancy FIGURES show how important the holiday rentals market is on the island

Figures from the National Institute of Statistics show that more than 88 per cent of the Island’s holiday dwellings offered as available in August were occupied.

Marta Jaume, Head of Rentals at Mallorca Sotheby’s International Realty, says, “Mallorca’s private holiday rentals market offers great flexibility to both families and groups wishing to stay together. This kind of non-hotel holiday is becoming increasingly fashionable, and provides a great opportunity for owners of high-end Mallorca property to make their investment work hard for them when they are not ‘in residence’.

The only issue is our rentals department has been incredibly popular ever since it opened, and we often have more demand than we have property available.”

THE massacre in Paris perpetrated by what seems to be a highly professional and ruthless group of terrorists, prepared to die for their cause, whatever it is, has possibly signalled the end of Europe’s open-border policy.

The tragedy overshadowed the conference in Malta which was intended to deal with the growing problem of massive illegal immigration from Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

It is still unclear whether the terrorists joined the thousands of migrants from Turkey or Libya to infiltrate Western Europe, or are what has become described as ‘home-grown’ terrorists. But we have to face the fact that the world is becoming more precarious with Islamic groups seeking to vent their anger at the West with increasingly violent actions.

France has Europe’s largest Muslim population with five million people mainly of North African origin. Yet the majority, now second or third generation, still live in the poorest suburbs in segregated communities, unwilling or unable to join mainstream French society. Successive governments have to bear some responsibility for a lack of integration programmes and discrimination but it is also due to restrictive Islamic laws and culture, which make the western lifestyle so hard to accept for Muslims who follow their faith. Many disillusioned young people are an easy target for radical Islamic groups.

With a global population reaching eight billion people, of whom the vast majority live in poverty or in countries racked by conflict in an ever more interconnected planet, Europe’s immigration policies need rethinking. Demographics may suggest that the western democracies need immigrants, but it is becoming increasingly apparent that Western Europe cannot cope with an influx of millions of refugees or illegal immigrants from Africa, the Middle East and Asia with totally different cultures, laws and traditions. Angela Merkel, who with David Cameron admitted that the multicultural society does not work, has opened up a Pandora’s box with her invitation to welcome millions of migrants and the deep divisions she has caused within the European Union, have threatened its very survival. Britain must now consider the introduction of ID cards not on-

ly to facilitate identifying illegal immigrants and potential terrorists but to protect the population.

Providing humanitarian assistance is a longstanding European tradition. It is natural to offer temporary right of abode to genuine refugees until it is safe for them to return to their own countries.

But today’s illegal economic migrants, including refugees, are not seeking charity but expecting to remain forever with passports, nationality, homes and jobs. And if the migrants and their families

cannot go where they want to go, instead of being grateful, they revolt. In addition most of the current wave of immigrants tends to be of Muslim origin, which poses the problem of integration as well as the threat of more terrorist attacks.

The world is now facing a major conflict with ISIS and to try to prevent this scenario we need more involvement from the United Nations and co-operation among the rich countries. There has to be a consensus to work together to help the

poor nations eradicate corruption, armed conflicts, the exploitation of resources and, where possible, remove despotic regimes in order to encourage education and economic development, and improve the standard of living of the population. This may be difficult to achieve in an ever more volatile and precarious world, but there can be no peace, stability or prosperity without a redistribution of the world’s resources and the elimination of gross inequality and poverty.

By John Smith IN our last article about the right to vote in the EU Referendum, we concentrated on Downing Street and the House of Commons, but there are other ways of getting your feelings known in Parliament and this is via the House of Lords.

Thirteen former ambassadors have warned that billions of pounds in trade deals and millions of jobs are at risk if Britain leaves the EU. In a letter to The Sunday Times on November 1, they said those who want to leave have ‘no credibility’ and are ‘naive’ if they think Britain will be able to quickly strike a better free trade deal with the EU, or new ones with countries such as America and China.

The letter was arranged by Lord Hannay of Chiswick, former ambassador to the UN, and Lord Kerr of Kinlochard, former ambassador to America and the EU. In fact, Lord Hannay and Baroness Sue Miller were due to propose amendments to the Referendum Bill to ensure all British citizens would have a vote in the EU Referendum, regardless of how long they have lived abroad.

Memorial plaque removed THE mother of a young man, who died from electrocution when he touched a lamppost during festivities in Bunyola, has said that a plaque in his memory at the local cemetery has been removed.

She reported to the Local Police that the flowers they had left for him had also been thrown to the floor and stamped on.

The family was informed by the town hall’s Councillor for the Environment that the plaque had been removed.

His mother suspects that the culprits are supporters of the Partido Popular who, she said, lost the elections due to the scandal over his death.

Immigrant’s death now a documentary CASE became a cause célèbre after claims he was refused treatment

By John Smith POLITICAL group Podemos has given presidential candidate, Albert Rivera, a copy of the documentary about the death of Senegalese immigrant Alpha Pam in Mallorca in 2013.

The candidate for the Ciudadanos party, Albert Rivera, received the documentary from the spokeswoman for Podemos, Laura Camargo, following a meeting with President of the Balearic Parliament, Xelo Huertas. It is directed by the party’s leader in the Balearic Islands, Alberto Jarabo.

Alpha Pam, 28, died of tuberculosis. He had been living in Spain for eight years and did not have a health card which made it impossible for him to be seen by a specialist.

Six months before his death, Pam went as many as seven different times to the Can Picafort Health Centre where he was given medication but never officially diagnosed with the disease.

It appears a physician advised him to get an X-ray at Inca Hospital, which he could not do because he didn’t have the card.

According to www.medicosdelmundo.org, he

visited the hospital three times to no avail.

His health kept deteriorating as time went by, causing him nausea, excruciating chest pain and chronic fatigue. He died at his Santa Margalida residence in a pool of blood.

Alpha Pam’s death became a cause célèbre after claims he was refused medical care.

However, according to his relatives, the illegal immigrant was not turned away and was treated – but for the wrong thing.

His family says that Inca Hospital referred him to the health centre in Can Picafort, where he was treated for bronchitis.

Elderly victims of financial abuse IN 50 per cent of cases of abuse against the elderly in Mallorca, their children are the culprits.

According to the Lawyers’ Association, elderly people who

request social care often face financial abuse which although hard to see, means that they lose the autonomy to solve daily problems.

Most of the victims of this kind of abuse are elderly women who are highly dependent, according to the author of the report, social

worker Sofia Alonso. In the past five years, the number of people suffering financial abuse has risen to 17 per cent of all requests for help.

No more money from central government THE Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism has told the Balearic Regional Government that it will not be providing the €63 million needed to reform the Palma Beach area.

The ministry has requested the regional government justifies how it has spent the €20 million it has received to date, according to the Councillor for Innovation, Research and Tourism, Biel Barcelo.

At the moment, €15 million reportedly cannot be accounted for.

Britons on trial for using forged notes in 2005 THREE Britons will stand trial this week in Palma for attempting to pay with forged €50 notes in a disco in Magaluf in July 2005.

The tourists, who were aged between 22 and 24 at the time, are facing five years in prison for possession of forged currency and knowingly attempting to pay with it.

They had €2,200 forged currency in total which they planned to use during their holidays in Calvia.

Fires break out in workshops A FIRE broke out in a car workshop on Son Castello Industrial Estate in Palma, destroying at least six cars. The fire caused several explosions and a fireman was injured while fighting the blaze.

Several days earlier, a fire broke out on premises being used illegally as a motorbike workshop in Bunyola. The tenant, 47,

sustained burns and was suffering from smoke inhalation after attempting to remove all the motorbikes from inside.

The neighbouring building was evacuated at around 8.30am due to the large flames coming from the workshop which was full of motorbikes and jet skis. Two were completely destroyed.

National and Local Police, firemen and paramedics attended the scene.

Local residents accused the tenant of endangering their lives. They considered making a formal complaint, claiming they had seen him welding in the area where he stored fuel and solvents. National Police are investigating.

HOMEOWNERS in Marbella whose planning permission is in doubt could be thrown a lifeline.

Maura Hillen is president of Almeria-based AUAN which has fought the corner of owners who purchased homes that turned out to be illegal.

“Thanks to various associations and a PSOE initiative in the Senate the citizens of Marbella have been given a lifeline that they may not know about,” she said.

“This is article 108.3 of the law regulating administrative court proceedings that came into force on October 1.”

This states that when a judge or tribunal orders the demolition of a property that has been declared illegal “sufficient guarantees” of compensation must be provided first.

“Given this,” Maura Hillen said, “we suggest that those affected consult their lawyers.”

British music is still alive and bringing in the money THE music trade body UK Music has released figures showing that the British music industry contributed £4.1 billion (€5.7 billion) to the UK economy in 2014.

The main increases are from royalties earned by musicians, composers and lyricists, which rose 11 per cent to £1.9 billion (€2.6 billion) and live music sales, which jumped 17 per cent to £924 million (€1.3 billion).

British artists were responsible for one in seven albums sold around the world in 2014, with Coldplay, One Direction, Pink Floyd, Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith all making the top 10 list of the year’s best-selling albums ably assisted by many other British performers.

It means that Britain is now the second-largest provider of recorded music in the world, accounting for 13.7 per cent of global sales.

Mango to wind down in the USA SPANISH fashion chain Mango has announced that it will close 450 sales outlets in the United States early next year, after ending a five-year deal to sell its clothing in J C Penney department stores around the country.

The chain, which is in the same market as similar stores such as Zara and H&M, has decided not to extend its current agreement and will close the outlets in February next year. However it will keep its seven standalone stores and intends to expand in this area within America.

“What the committee has been expecting is that the economy will continue to grow at a pace that is sufficient to generate further improvements in the labour market, and to return inflation to our 2

per cent target over the m e d i u m t e r m , ” Ye l l e n told the Financial Services Committee of the House of Representatives.

A meeting of the Fede r a l R e s e r v e ’s p o l i c y committee in December is the next and final opportunity for any increase to take place this year, after US interest rates have been near zero since December 2008.

to investors, so the heavily hinted possibility of a rise increases demand for the US currency and indeed the dollar strengthened on the news.

There is no absolute commitment at this stage and there is still a month in which to gather information about the s t a t e o f t h e e c o n o m y, but it does seem unlikely that she would have made this comment unless she was fairly certain that the increase was on the cards.

Revenues from recorded music fell by £3 million (€4.2 million) last year, to £615 million (€861 million). UK Music chairman Andy Heath put the blame on download stores and streaming music providers which, he claimed, put a stranglehold on revenues through an ‘unacceptable balance of negotiating power.’

If that could be ‘diluted,’ he added: “the current growth could improve exponentially.”

In fact, many people around the world first learn about this country through one of our bands.”

Prime Minister David Cameron is laying out the red carpet as he hopes to sign trade deals with India, including one for supply of around 20 training aircraft to their air force, and no doubt he will touch upon the problems with Indian investments in steel companies in the UK. British attempts to run businesses in India have not generally been successful although Costa Coffee and Vodafone have bucked that trend.

THERE was a time when a premium was paid on a craftsman’s skill and time taken to make a quality product. The slogan used to be, ‘when you buy cheap you buy dear.’ Experience suggests that craftsmanship and exclusivity of high priced goods have since been hijacked and degraded.

The artful dodgers of marketing latched on to replacing the term craftsman with the designer mantra. Just what is such an ambiguous and ridiculous term to mean, unless to fool the gullible.

It says much when cheap counterfeit goods can’t be told apart from designer label goods selling at many times the price. I have little sympathy for defrauded designer label manufacturers. The swindlers are defrauded by cheats. They do prove the point: ‘A bad product sold well will outsell a good product sold badly.’

How can it be? Other than deception when a brand name shaving kit costs more than a durable electric shaver imported from China. The cutting

This was not some hare-brained idea, plucked from nowhere to create scary sensationalism. It was an observance deducted from living eight years in an Islamic country, listening to their views and ideals and concluding that, if their fanaticism and utter adherence to the words of the Koran were put into practice - coupled with their oil wealth the outcome was quite simply inevitable.

And did Leapy take some stick! I certainly came to realise a little of how the ultimately ostracised Enoch Powell must have felt. ‘Yet another Leapy rant’ headed so many derisory missives, that frankly it all became a bit of a bore. Well now it’s upon us. Pussyfooting politicians, peace and love pundits and the ever present ‘ostriches’ have now placed us

Thousands will die. Attacks and fighting will prevail in our towns and cities. The infiltrators will take years to flush out and ultimately the blame will once again (thanks a bunch Blair!) lay firmly at the feet of our money-mad, pussyfooting, wind-bagging politicians.

And still we let these people in. I’d love to be a flea on the tent wall as Satan’s army scoff and laugh at the idiocy of the infidel enemy. They must by now believe they can actually win. And ya know something? They could well be right!

If Britons have no right to vote then they shouldn’t pay taxes Re: Why is Great Britain no longer great?

WHERE to start. Over 2,000 years ago, the Roman Empire, which ran most of the world, made a good ruling, ‘no representation –no taxation.’

No vote – no tax. That ruling is still written into many countries’ constitutions today.

Britain even helps some countries to achieve this democratic status. But British citizens who work and live inside the EU, which really runs Britain, after 12 years are disallowed the vote.

But then the EU also made a good ruling, any Brit cannot be discriminated against within the EU by another member country, so the UK commits an offence by denying us 12-year Brits the vote. Also, Iain ‘powerdrunken’ Smith steals our winter fuel allowance which the EU says we are fully entitled to; after all, most of us in Spain live in ‘Jerry-built’ homes.

How would the Suffragette movement have dealt with this? Another point comes to mind, what about the scum in our British nicks, should they also get the vote? After all, it does cost us £32,000 a year to keep them ‘cosy’ inside. The once Empress of Europe ‘Magee T’ was some time ago told that all governments throughout the world do not have any money, it all belongs to ‘the people’.

So what about what happened in Spain a short while ago? The Spanish Government, which we are not allowed to vote for, gave €60 billion of our money to the Spanish banks to stop them going bankrupt. Leapy, can you please point us in the right direction to the system of where we collect the Spanish bank shares that we are due?

Before you ask ‘why are you here in Spain?’, we left the southeast of England some 12 years ago, to get away from the 35,000 who die of the weather and another 24,000 who die of air pollution caused by stinking diesels each year. Also we were a bit peed-off with highly-educated schoolboys who have never worked for a living and who don’t know their rear-end from their elbow, and have at last run the once great country into the ground.

To my mind we should not have to pay the UK or Spain any taxation at all; again, no vote– no tax, it’s undemocratic.

Brexit ban undemocratic Re: Downing Street Brexit Petition I am one of those who has lived outside the UK for 15 years. I have no vote in the general elections in my country of residence (Spain). Yet, I have paid, over many years, taxes to both Spain and the UK, as I have a rental property in London. It is totally unjustifiable that I am precluded from the fundamental right to vote in what is supposed to be the heart of democracy!!!

Peace talks?

I AM afraid that Father Carrasco has a lot to learn about Muslim beliefs. If he thinks for one minute that the Muslims will sit down and talk about peace between Christians and Muslims, he is sadly mistaken.

Their core belief is that there is no other god than Allah and no amount of kind words will change that.

They are duty-bound by their religion to do all they can to ‘promote the Muslim faith’, and that is putting it kindly!

Last week you scoffed at the Royal British Legion for not allowing Scouts and Guides, etc, to march in the Remembrance parade. Today you write it will only take a couple of attacks perpetrated by these socalled refugees to ignite another war of the same ilk as the Crusades. Only this time it will be in our own back gardens.

Is Biggleswade not our own back garden and just maybe all these exmilitary personnel of the Royal

I am a Norwegian, and I give you one example from Norway. Some few weeks ago our Finance Minister announced that we shall pay 2 per cent less tax as from 2016. This week our Prime Minister announced that there would be no tax reduction, because the ‘refugees’ would cost NOK 9 billion (€96 million) more than anticipated!!!

We will remember those who fought, but for how long?

REMEMBRANCE services remind us of the nature of real sacrifice and what it means Colin Bird A weekly look Each week, Colin brings his slightly off-thewall view of the world to the pages of EWN in his own irreverent style.

LAST week as always, I watched the television coverage of the Remembrance Sunday parade at the Cenotaph. Then at 11am GMT on the 11th of November, I retired to a quiet corner to offer my silent respects for the fallen.

I do these things because of a genuine desire to show in some small way, my esteem and appreciation.

It serves as a note to myself about the nature of real sacrifice and what it means, but most of all how much each of us owes to those who fought and died for the freedoms we now seem prepared to surrender.

DEEPLY MOVING: Parades show the comrades’ silent dignity and intense pride.

I watch the dwindling number of WW2 survivors make their laboured but proud way along Whitehall, on foot and in wheelchairs, some too infirm to take part but simply watching and remembering from the sidelines. And those who fought

in other 20th century conflicts and indeed continue to do so today.

I feel deeply moved by their silent dignity and sense their intense pride when I see the medals and regimental badges on display. And when I hear the

words from the fourth stanza of Binyon’s famous poem, ‘For the Fallen,’ then please, nobody attempt to speak to me.

As I watch the politicians step forward to lay their wreaths with sombre and, I suspect in many cases, false

expressions of introspection, I feel anger at the injustice of it all. The terrible consequences of these conflicts and the disgraceful lack of compassion that is often the reward for these magnificent people once they have served their purpose.

I reflect on the decline of the morals and standards of our once great country and the dire circumstances we currently find ourselves in.

I mourn the erosion of those freedoms paid for in blood by the very people being remembered today, and the gifting of our sovereign rights to European interests.

Year on year I have the same thought as I remember those millions of their comrades who never returned.

And it is this: They deserve so much more.

New electronic ITV certificates AS part of a new series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

PAPER VERSION: If you have this document, you must carry it in your vehicle.

FROM this week, new vehicles registered in Spain will have a new, electronic version of the technical characteristics ITV document, rather than the traditional paper or card version.

The new ‘tarjeta electrónica de características técnicas’ (eITV) will automatically be issued with the vehicle for all newly registered cars, vans and trucks from now on. All previously registered vehicles will continue to use the paper and card documentation.

The DGT has already implemented a system in which manufacturers, importers and vehicle sales companies can submit the registration information by electronic means, which can be accessed and checked by officials.

Once checked and validated, the DGT will store the information in an electronic register, the Registro de Vehículos Prematriculados, which in turn issues the vehicle

identification number, the Número de Identificación del Vehículo (NIVE), which then becomes the unique identifier for that vehicle.

The DGT will then assign the registration number of the vehicle and issue the Tarjeta de Inspección Técnica, or technical inspection card, in electronic form only, which can be accessed online.

The vast majority of vehicle manufacturers are already integrated into the project and in October, nearly 50 per cent of registered vehicles were already equipped with electronic tokens.

As of May 11, 2016, this type of electronic card will also be issued for mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles and quads.

Remember though, this is only for newly registered vehicles. If your vehicle has the paper version, you must carry this document with you in the vehicle.

Are community members powerless?

In the president’s report and budget prior to our upcoming AGM there are several points I question. The president states that legal proceedings will commence for debt recovery from delinquent owners for which we are charged more than €1,500 per case. This is a lot of money.

Perhaps we should seek other bids. In all, our Community budget is almost 1.5 million In debt recovery, my sources suggest you can get a much better deal than €1,500 per case. Yes, it is most unusual to apportion expenses by catastral values. The law says that the coeffi-

Buy one get one free is discount nonsense Mike Senker

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man BOGOF. Everyone loves a BOGOF which is the great idea of buy one get one free. How simple is that? In theory sure, but in real life it gets so complicated because companies were not happy with just doing what it says on the tin. The whole discount thing is now nonsense.

I’m writing this from the USA. When I checked into my hotel (where, of course, I went straight to the third room first) they gave me a little book of vouchers to use. I have now checked out of hotel with my voucher book virginity intact.

That’s not because I didn’t want to use them, but the free drink was for a beer or glass of house wine and they wouldn’t let me have diet coke or coffee instead, even though I explained I am teetotal.

The $25 voucher for the slot machine didn’t apply to me as it was only for new

frequent player card sign ups, and silly me I have had mine for five years!! The free meal was for the person with you (cheapest one free). I was on my own so that was no good! Mind you I could have invited in one of the homeless people that were hanging about nearly everywhere I went outside. Definitely going to do that next time!

Then I went shopping and there the fun begins. If you buy two pairs of Levis you get the third pair for half price. I don’t want three I want two. Yes, I know what you’re saying ‘just buy two’. And I did but instead of feeling good about shopping there I felt a little bit cheated so it’s not a good experience.

It’s the same here in Spain. All day every day I hear an advert for an insurance company offering amazing discounts. How does the advert end? By them saying it’s only for new customers!!! I’ve been with the company for 11 years and mine goes UP every bloody year!! I’ve asked them about it and have been told it’s ‘company policy’.

So my message to all companies is either give me something or don’t ...but don’t keep doing all this smart a**e BS.

DO you remember when you were a child and your body was able to contort into almost any shape you decided to make?

Young bodies are so pliable and it can be hard to believe now as an adult some of the sporty fitness activities you were able to perform so easily as a child.

As we get older the body takes on more stress, both physical and mental, and unfortunately our muscles become tighter, shorter and less pliable.

People that do manual labour work such as construction workers tend to keep a stronger physical structure due to the heavy demands of their job. Others that work in offices and are constantly sat on computers will find their muscles will shorten over time, creating physical imbalance and discomfort.

Unless this is managed with regular effective exercise and stretching you will most certainly be relying on medication to ease back or neck pain that could possibly be remedied from efficient progressive stretching.

I have successfully fixed many clients back problems over the years without the aid of one single painkiller tablet, simply

STRETCHES: Must never be performed on cold muscles. by giving them the correct exercises to strengthen the weak area, and effective stretches to relieve the tightness. It is possible to relieve someone’s painful lower back by simply stretching out their shortened hamstrings.

Upper body can also be an issue.

Clients that have previously trained in gyms have, due to poor technique or lack of care from the trainer, over engaged the trapezius muscle in the upper back. This is the muscle that you feel when you shrug your shoulders. Incorrect technique when performing many upper body exercises can cause the trapezius to take over.

A simple stretch to ease tightness in this area would be to stand up straight, clasp your hands tightly behind your back, stick your chest out and drop your

shoulders right down until you feel as though your shoulder blades are about to meet at the back. This is a very simple but effective stretch.

Another progression on this stretch would be to lie back over a stability ball and put your arms up over your head and relax, this again allows the muscles in the upper back to stretch effectively.

All of your stretches should be done post workout, or if for rehabilitation after at least five minutes of mobility moves.

Never perform stretches on cold muscles. Muscles need to be warm and pliable, otherwise you risk causing injury.

Think of your muscles like a piece of Blu-Tack straight out of the packet, pull it apart and it will break, roll it around in your hand for a minute or so and it becomes pliable enough to stretch.

COULD women be cracking under the strain of wanting to have it all?

The number of women reported to be suffering from work-related stress in the UK is now 50 per cent higher than men of the same age.

Psychiatrists say women are struggling to combine their work life with the pressures of raising children and family life.

Figures from the Health and Safety Executive for 2014/15 show an estimated 68,000 women aged 35 to 44 in the UK are stressed at work, compared with only 46,000 men of the same age.

Overall there were 590 cases of stress per 100,000 for males and 920 cases for

females.

Government figures show an estimated 70 million working days a year are lost to stress, depression and anxiety.

This week, we asked the doctor about a subject many women of a certain age and their partners tend to have doubts about: menopause.

WHAT is the menopause and when does it happen?

The menopause is the moment when menstruation stops due to a drop in levels of female hormones.

It’s a natural stage which usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 50.

How does it start? What are the first symptoms?

In the beginning, periods start to become irregular and women may notice dizziness, hot flushes, palpitations, forgetfulness, slight incontinence problems, painful joints, insomnia and intercourse can become painful due to increase vaginal dryness.

Emotional changes are common such as irritability, depression or anxiety.

Osteoporosis can develop over time which weakens bones and can put women at risk of fractures.

Can hot flushes be avoided?

To try and reduce hot flushes women can start by changing their diet, avoiding caffeine, alcohol and spicy food, getting regular exercise and using relaxation techniques such as yoga. If this doesn’t work, medication such as anti-

depressants or hormone replacement therapy can be tried.

Is taking pills really necessary?

It’s true many women take pills during the menopause. As a general rule they are not prescribed as they have sideeffects, and are saved for certain cases.

My mother-in-law says drinking soya bean milk is good. Is she right or is that an old wives’ tale?

Recent studies have proved it to be true. Soya beans appear to calm menopause symptoms as they contain oestrogen.

Do menopausal women need to take extra care?

Women should carry on as normal but bear in mind they need to take extra care of their bones. Along with diet changes, they should avoid cholesterol, sugar and salt. If they are heavy they should try to lose some weight.

All women going through the menopause should have tests done to check their hearts and see a specialist in internal medicine and a gynaecologist.

WITH the arrival of the colder months, the flu virus becomes more prevalent, but how do you know if you are suffering with the flu or the common cold?

Cold symptoms Colds start with sneezing, sore throats and runny noses and sometimes fever. When the virus is in remission the residual cough may last several weeks. The average duration of a cold is usually seven to 15 days.

Diet drinks can help with weight loss A STUDY has claimed that diet fizzy drinks really do help with weight loss.

Drinks, such as diet cola, are often criticised for simply replacing sugar with other sweeteners, but researchers say the use of low energy sweeteners, instead of the sugar in original versions of the drinks, does lead to a reduced calorie intake.

The new findings were the result of a review led by scientists at the University of Bristol, which showed sweetened drinks did not increase appetite. These sweeteners included in the study were aspartame (found in Diet Coke), Stevia (found in some versions of Sprite and Coke Lite), saccharin, and sucralose (found in some versions of Diet Pepsi).

The researchers found there was ‘a considerable weight of evidence’ confirming that consuming sweeteners instead of sugar helps reduce relative energy intake and body weight.

Water let out of reservoir WATER company Emaya closed the Gorg Blau and the Pareis torrent while trials were being carried out on valves installed recently during maintenance at the reservoir.

Water was let out of the reservoir into the two riverbeds having previously informed the local town hall, the Guardia Civil, firemen, Tourism Department, Water Resources Department, Balearic Mountaineering and Climbing Federation and the Balearic Potholing Federation for safety reasons. Guardia Civil, Local Police and Civil Protection prevented people from accessing the areas while the water was being let out.

The town is in the Tramuntana mountains, 10 minutes by car from Inca, and has just 700 inhabitants.

There will also be live folklore performances, exhibitions, and tastings at local bars and restaurants.

On Sunday in Llubi, bee keepers and honey makers from all over the islands gather at this festival, and enter their product into competitions.

Most of the stalls are in the Plaça España area, and others in Plaça Major and along the Ramblas, so all of the activity is focused around the city centre and the marina.

The ice rink will also be set up once again in Parc de Ses Estacions from 10am to 10pm and costing €5 to hire some skates and try for 25 minutes not to fall over. Gloves must be worn.

The following day, Saturday November 28, sees the start of the Sa Pobla fair, one of the largest in Mallorca in the autumn which is visited by thousands of people who flock to the streets to enjoy the typical markets of local produce and handicrafts.

There are demonstrations by craftsmen, and exhibitions of martial arts by local children, as well as concerts for all tastes from modern rock bands to the traditional music of the Xeremier (Mallorcan bagpipes). It continues on Sunday November 29.

Also on Saturday November 28 is the 10th New Wine Fair in Santa Maria del Cami, starting at 9.30am with a tour by train of some of the vineyards in the region. Places are limited and cost €3.

Bookings with the town hall on 971 620 131. In the evening from 8.30pm in Plaça de la Vila there will a meeting with local vineyard owners to taste some of their wines. Selected bars and restaurants will be offering tapas for €2, served with a glass of local wine.

On the same night, from 9.30pm until midnight, Spanish flamenco dancer Eva Yerbabuena will be performing at Palma Auditorium.

In Selva, the following morning, it is time for some more mushrooms, with the Fira de l´Esclatasang in the Mancor de la Vall area. There will be many stalls offering the huge wild mushrooms which can be used in many different dishes. It starts from 11am on Saturday and will also be held from 9am on Sunday.

BE GENTLE: Always handle a hamster carefully.

DOGS are telepathic and able to sense your emotions and frame of mind instantly. This is one reason for a dog who has misbehaved while you have been away to know that you are reacting angrily and, therefore, come to you saying ‘sorry’ or cower away. It does not remember the past misdemeanour but it does know your present reaction.

Canine instincts vary in strength between breeds and individuals of the same breed. They are either there or not. They can be strengthened, weakened, or diverted, but cannot be put there and cannot be taken away. They might lie dormant and, once developed, can never be weakened.

A dog with an obsession for chasing balls can be controlled by training and by providing other outlets for its energy. If a young dog is corrected the first time it chases a car it may give up the idea. But if it is allowed to chase cars the hunting instinct becomes stronger and in no time it will be very difficult, even impossible, to stop. The dog has the instinct of the hunt, which means a chase and a kill. Sadly, often the dog is killed by the car.

An active hamster is a happy one SELF-PRESERVATION: The instinct has been weakened by breeding.

The first instinct is maternal and others cover such areas as survival, hunting, guarding, the pack, and self-preservation.

The maternal instinct allows females to breed. The female is able to bring her pups into the world and care for them especially in the first four weeks.

Self-preservation makes wild dogs furtive and afraid of the unfamiliar which is no use to man. This type of nervousness in the domestic dog is one of the common causes of problems in present-day dogs.

Nearly all cases where children have been attacked by dogs and owners have been bitten arise from nervousness. The dog is afraid it is going to be hurt and attacks first - fear, fright and bite.

The instinct of self-preservation has been weakened by breeding from bold dogs rather than nervous ones, but has never been entirely removed.

Most instincts provide pleasure to the dog, and because it associates the action with pleasure, the instinct grows stronger.

Ways to keep children safe when they are around pets SMALL children have trouble telling the difference between pets and toys, which could result in problems unless families thinking of getting a pet put some thought in the matter beforehand.

The American Paediatricians’ Association gives the following advice on choosing the perfect pet and raising animal-smart youngsters: 1. F i n d a p e t t h a t l ik e s ch ild re n .

Older animals are often a good choice as they are less likely to bite out of overexcitement, but it’s best to make sure they are already used to and like children.

2. Treat your pet as well as possible so it enjoys human company. Don’t tie dogs up as this can make them aggressive.

3. Never leave a child alone with an animal. Bites are often down to rough play as children are often unable to tell when a pet is getting overexcited.

4. Teach children not to put their faces close to animals.

5. Never let children pull pets tails, take their food or toys away or bother them while they’re eating or sleeping.

6. Vaccinate all pets.

7. Follow local bylaws and always keep pets under control.

8. Find out if neighbours have pets.

Getting to know them will be a way of getting children used to animals before they have one of their own.

9. Teach children to stay well away from animals that seem threatening or nervous and teach them to recognise the signs.

10. Teach children to keep still if a dog that they don’t know approaches or tries to follow them, stressing that they should never kick out at them or try to run away. Tell them to keep their eyes on the dog while slowly walking a w a y ba c kw a rds until w e ll out of reach.

THIS week in our Small Furries series, we take a look at hamsters, more specifically, Dwarf or Syrian hamsters.

Although this advice is valuable for all hamsters, these little fellows need lots of things to climb on and places to explore in their cage as they are very active and should not become bored.

The classic exercise wheel is ideal, but ensure it has no spaces between the rungs which could trap and break their legs.

Toilet roll tubes and boxes are ideal to hide in and chew as well as being inexpensive. But you can also find a plethora of toys in all pet shops.

A good addition would be some wood to chew on; however, it must be untreated fruit tree branches and not old furniture.

Better still, give them a gnawing block to help them wear their teeth down.

Feeding time should be fun: scatter some food around the cage and hide some in tubes, so they have an adventure hunting

for it. Ensure their water supply is always fresh.

Hamsters love to burrow! So ensure there is always a deep layer of shavings, torn up tissue or sawdust at the base of their cage. Hamsters are nocturnal, so leave them alone to rest by day. Early evening is the best time to handle them.

If you keep waking them up in the day, they can become stressed and are more likely to bite. , for them it is morning so they are awake and active.

What’s the best way to handle a hamster?

Familiarity and routine is what you should aim for. Handle your hamster carefully from a young age so they’re used to it and not scared. This also cuts the chances of them biting.

Remember, always be gentle.

Use both hands as a scoop when handling them. Hold them low down over a flat surface: even a small fall can cause serious injury. Try to imagine how you would feel being picked up by something the size of an apartment block.

Family Matters I’VE been staring at a blank screen trying to write this column for days. What do I say when everywhere I look there are stories of terror and brutal killings?

I tried to wean myself off of the news on Monday, but I kept being dragged back in, checking Facebook or listening to the radio, 24 hour TV news.

It’s quite difficult to avoid. When 911 happened I was with my boyfriend on holiday in France, we had been out for the day at a beautiful medieval village called Brantome.

We’d canoed around a moat, had fun, eaten a delicious menu, and wound our way back through country lanes to the house where we were staying. Then we turned on the TV to see that two planes had flown into the Twin Towers and a new reality began.

Absorbing the emotive messages from the families of the dead, trying to understand the intricate political situation that brought us to this point, won-

And in the end, what can I do? Or you for that matter? I think the key lies in remaining as loving and patient

towards ourselves and our neighbours as we possibly can.

Look for the goodness in people because most people are simple beings who want to have what we all want: a happy family, a safe home, the oppor-

tunity to plan for the future and have ambitions and dreams and the chance to realise some of them.

Many people around the world don’t have that lucky situation. It’s the luck of the draw that I was born where I

was and not in Syria or Iraq. I’m not sure that I can directly help them all, although I want to, but there are things which I can indirectly do which help people and spreads kindness: like raise money for reputable charities who are making a difference in parts of the world that I am unlikely to go to.

Which is why I have chosen to raise money for Meditteranea this weekend.

I AM just back from a talking tour, and what better than being able to report on a great new idea from my travels.

During travels to give talks to the Costa Blanca Gardening Circle in the Almanzora Valley Gardening Club and the Axarquia Gardening Club it was evident many expats were living in properties with steeply sloping gardens.

They were concerned about what to plant to reduce, or hopefully totally stop, soil erosion during heavy rain.

We discussed topics including the repairing or building of terrace walls and stabilising earth walls.

But then by chance Anne and David Olson kindly picked me up to drive to Competa for the third talk, and told me about a wonder plant they used to solve

severe access and corrosion problems on their sloping land.

En route we went to see the benefits of the plant Vetiver, Chrysopogon and Zizanioidea variety Monto, in their own and surrounding gardens.

I was amazed and wished someone had introduced the plant to Spain many years ago.

Vetiver has many uses on sloping and terraced land, the repair of agricultural water ways, in containers on terraces, surrounding ponds, lakes etc.

I came home with a few plants to use in my garden. The plants are being used to hide the green painted back wall of my paella kitchen, as a feature on my largest raised terrace and in a water garden I am developing.

Now a little more about the plant itself.

Vetiver is originally from India and is related to lemon grass. It is an attractive green

and grows in clumps up to 1.5 metres high, with vertical roots going down up to two or three metres into the ground, hence its stabilising properties and

need for little watering after the first three months.

Its upper growth with a grass like tuft turns an attractive purple colour. Once you have

two year plants, plantlets can be harvested from the outside of the clumps to expand your plantings.

NO-ONE expected Cataluña’s Independence faction to go back on its decision to debate, vote on and approve secession from Spain.

Neither did anyone expect the Spanish Government to take it lying down, hence Mariano Rajoy’s appeal to the Constitutional Court to halt the process.

But although 52 per of Catalans voted for neither the Junts pel Si ticket nor the CUP party in the September 27 regional elections, between them they have scraped up a slim parliamentary majority.

Artur Mas, his Junts pel Si fellow travellers and the CUP believe they are exercising their democratic rights when on the contrary they are riding roughshod over those 52 per cent of Cataluña.

Give it a go CATALUÑA tried to proclaim itself as an

independent republic in 1641, 1873, 1931 and 1934.

All attempts came to nothing, sometimes in the conference chamber and other times on the battlefield, although this resounding lack of success has done nothing to deter Mas, Junqueras, Romeva and Baños.

A member of a Middle-Eastern royal family hell-bent on securing a place to stay in the city has just signed a contract to rent the flat, which boasts 300 square

metres of terraces, for a price of €35,000 per month, Prestige Barcelona agency has reported.

The penthouse, in one of the city’s most expensive areas, has a sale price of €12 million and is just one example of the sort of luxury properties international property hunters are interested in, the agency said.

In 2014, 90 per cent of the homes sold for more than €1 million were bought by customers from abroad, Prestige

Depending on your budget, buying new doors, draw fronts and work surfaces is less expensive than buying a new kitchen and can add extra value.

Whatever you decide to do to improve your kitchen, it will definitely help you sell your home.

The dining area can be made more attractive by setting out the table with your best dining set and placing a floral centrepiece on the table.

Five years for stealing nappies A MAN is facing five years in prison for stealing four packets of nappies from a supermarket in Palma in December 2012.

When he exited the store with the nappies, worth almost €100, he fled in a car which was waiting for him. Two cashiers ran after them and one was injured when she attempted to remove the car keys from the ignition. The other was able to record the number-plate and the police were informed. His lawyer claims that the accused was on drugs and desperately needed the nappies.

The driver of the vehicle has already been tried and accepted a two-year sentence.

RACE BASE: Atlantic Rally for Cruisers sets sail from Las Palmas.

By John Smith EVERY November since 1986 the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers has set sail from Las Palmas, bound 2,700 nautical miles westward across the Atlantic to the Caribbean.

This year’s rally starts on November 22 and the majority of vessels should arrive in St Lucia by December 18.

This is one of many rallies organised by the World Cruising Club and they are devised for the ‘average’ cruising boat and crew, helping people to realise their dream of making a long offshore passage.

This, the 30th Atlantic Rally sails from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Rodney Bay, St Lucia and has around 200 boats with 1,200 people who will sail the 2,700 nautical miles This is not a ‘hard-nosed’ race and it attracts a large number of quite disparate sailors including families with children, tough racers, cruising couples, big boats and modest boats. The organisers say that this is more than just a boat race, it is about friendships made ashore in the two weeks of pre-departure activities continued over the radio

It’s about arriving in St Lucia to be met on the dock with a rum punch and a chilled beer, knowing you have achieved something fantastic crossing an ocean on a small sailboat.

A somewhat longer version of the race is currently under way and involved a departure from Las Palmas on November 8 with yachts heading for the Cape Verde Islands from whence they would then also head for St Lucia covering a total of 2,955 nautical miles before they complete the rally by about December 3.

After the war, there was a steady increase in development of these small submarines for scientific research, some of which were manned and others for deep sea exploration were remotely controlled.

A former James Bond villain, Graham Hawkes, who appeared as the pilot of a small submersible in For Your Eyes Only, has been at the forefront of the development of high-end submarines and trained Richard Branson on piloting one his machines.

The submarines themselves come in all shapes and sizes and there is even one which is styled to look like a shark.

Although there has been the well publicised financial crisis, the market isn’t huge and there are still enough wealthy people around to keep a number of manufacturers in business.

Alicante wants Shortlist announced for to keep Volvo Yachtsman of the Year ALICANTE will do ‘everything possible’ to ensure the city does not lose the start of the Volvo Ocean Race from 2017 according to Councillor for Tourism, Eva Montesinos.

In the summer of this year, the promoter of the Volvo Ocean Race threatened to sue the Valencian Government unless a €581,813 debt was paid as agreed as part of the contracted deal done with the previous government.

The two sides set a maximum cost of €4.5 million for the village, which should have been covered by spon-

sorship revenue. If sponsorship gained was less than the costs generated, it was agreed the council would accept responsibility for costs of up to €3 million although any revenues generated above the amount would be profit for Volvo and not the regional government.

Councillor Montesinos said they were now trying to seek private sponsors for the next start of the race and were looking to the Regional Secretary of Tourism, Francesc Colomer, for support.

Amongst the candidates is Giles Scott, who has been unrivalled in the Finn class since

October 2013. Scott has also been involved in the Ben Ainslie Racing Team’s win at the Portsmouth Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World series.

Also on the shortlist is Ian Walker, the first skipper from the UK to win the Volvo Ocean Race. Walker was part of the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing victory in the 2014/15 tournament.

Another contender is Ian Williams, who was victorious

in the ISAF World Match Racing Championship for the fifth time, a record which saw him end the 2014/15 season with 12 event wins and 35 podium finishes.

The boats.com Young Sailor of the Year Award will also be handed out at the event in London, with Jack Lewis, Eleanor Poole and Cameron Tweedle all in the running.

Brand manager Katie Jackson for boats.com said: “The

shortlist of nominees for the UK’s top sailing award, the boats.com YJA Yachtsman of the Year Award, is always very strong. This year, the list highlights some exceptional achievements, and it’s going to be tough for the members of the YJA to choose a winner.”

THEY’RE at it again! Yes, I can only be referring to the for- and againstbullfighting lobbies here in Spain.

More than 430,000 people have signed a petition against plans by the pro-bullfighting conservative government to introduce two-year bullfighting courses in Spanish schools.

Well, I’m with the pro-bullfighting lobby on this one. I’m not going to repeat the arguments, just saying that the world would be a poorer, duller place without it.

the rules or background and see it as a ‘man vs beast’ charade with the odds heavily stacked against the animal, which misses the point entirely.

The more rational argument is that, as a society, we’re incredibly hypocritical. We eat meat without knowing where it comes from, or use animal products (do you own leather shoes?) without any idea how these animals were kept or slaughtered.

As long as the animal products are nicely packaged, we’re happy to believe they all had a beautiful life on a farm somewhere and died a ‘humane’ death. This, of course, couldn’t be further from the harsh reality.

The ‘toros bravos’ live as quasiwild animals for four to seven years, without much human interference.

Four to seven years roaming the countryside, or one to two in a battery farm and then ending up in an

abattoir. I know which one I’d go for.

Granted, the last 20 minutes of their lives are pretty cruel but their quality of life, overall, is so much better than those millions of industrially-raised and kept animals consumed and exploited every day.

As for ‘killing for food vs killing for fun’, after each ‘corrida’, their meat is given to the poor. That’s part of the tradition.

Unless someone is a die-hard vegan and doesn’t use any animal products (which, in our society, is fairly impossible), it’s hard to mount a credible attack on bullfighting in the 21st century. Winners in the Senior League IN the match between the Corsaris-Dimonis team against Ibiza, the final score was 25 to 12 BALEARES U18 LEAGUE. The U18 teams from RC Ponent and El Toro RC joined with Ibiza RFC in a triangular tournament in the second round of the U18 Baleares League. The closest match of the day was, as always between rivals RC Ponent and El Toro RC in which the Palma team came out in front with a final score of 24 points to 7. The Ibiza RFC U18 which has had three seasons without a team in this category found it difficult to make any headway against the more experienced opposition but have some players who showed promise.

BALEARES SENIOR LEAGUE. An unseasonally warm and sunny afternoon saw El Toro RC welcome Bahia RC to Son Caliu for their first home match of this season’s Senior League.

Supporters of both sides saw a tough match in which both sides tackled hard and found it difficult to break through the opponents defences.

The first try came for the home team as Hicham El Isidry shot through to put the first points on the board. Bahia RC lost an opportunity to score from a scrum three metres from El Toro RC try line just after the half time break and although they pushed hard, most of the second half action took place in the Bahia RC half of the pitch.

The home team scored two more tries, one converted and a penalty kick to stay well ahead. The younger players of El Toro RC had the advantage as their opponents began to tire and they kept the pressure on. Bahia RC made a last minute effort which was held up by El Toro RC defences so their score remained at
