Boost for ban on bullfights MOTION set to be approved by the Mallorca Government Mallorca’s Government is due to approve a motion to support the regional government in its attempt to ban bullfighting in the Balearic Islands today (Thursday).

The Mallorca Sense Sang (Without Blood) campaign has gathered more than

139,000 signatures and persuaded 29 towns to ban bullfighting, the most recent being Binissalem.

It will now attempt to get the support of the Mallorca Government and take further steps.

The motion will be voted on in Parliament.

High hopes for Xmas BUSINESSES in the Balearic Islands predict record sales this Christmas. A report from ANGED, the union for large shopping areas, says this Christmas, figures which have not been seen since before the financial crisis are expected, as the economy is improving and confidence increases.

Landslide clear-up ROCKS had to be removed from the entrance to the Monnaber tunnel near the Gorg Blau reservoir in the Tramuntana Mountains following a landslide in which no-one was injured.

Provincial and regional government road workers, Guardia Civil and Local Police cleared the area near Fornalutx within an hour and the road was opened to traffic.

MARKET STALLS: Preference has been given to producers who live in the town.

BANCO SABADELL has launched a campaign to improve local commerce in Inca.

The ‘Creiem en Inca’ (We Believe in Inca) campaign, in collaboration with the town hall, will see 150 businesses

taking part until the end of this month and aims to increase the number of clients in shops. Participating businesses will offer clients the chance to take part in a raffle for a €3,000 gift card to spend in the local shops.

The bank’s regional director, Pedro Ballester, said the town had been chosen as it was a key area they want to support.

Meanwhile, in Sencelles, a new weekly market is planned in Plaza de España, which also

hopes to boost trade in nearby bars and shops.

Preference for stalls has been given to producers who live in the town and especially those who have environmentally friendly products.

By John Smith THE art of flamenco whilst initially appealing mainly within Spain has spread on a worldwide basis with regular concerts not just within Spain but in all of the major cities of the world.

Every town in southern Spain in particular will have one or more serious concerts each year and this does not take into account the ‘flamenco shows’ offered in restaurants and bars which are perhaps not quite so proficient.

The origins of flamenco are difficult to establish, although everything points to it having grown over a period of centuries within the Gitano and Roma population of Andalucia following the Inquisition. Flamenco is expressed threefold through the flamenco guitar, singing, and dancing and many of the performances recall the struggles and tribulations of the past.

It is believed that it originally consisted of unaccompanied singing, then later the songs were accompanied by flamenco guitar, rhythmic hand clapping and feet stomping and dance.

The golden age of flamenco dancing is considered to be between 1869 and 1910. The music developed rapidly in music cafés called cafés cantantes, a new type of venue with ticketed public performances.

Flamenco dancers also became the major public attraction in those cafés.

Balearics classed as safe for the Brits THE British Foreign Office has categorised the Balearic Islands as a safe area for tourists.

The Foreign Office has made a list of Mediterranean countries which are at risk of being

targeted in Islamist terrorist attacks, establishing three different risk levels. The Balearic Islands is amongst those with the lowest risk, along with Italy Croatia and Greece.

Amongst the most dangerous countries are Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey, while Morocco is considered to be less at risk of short and medium term terrorist attacks.

British Tour Operators have redirected flights which were due to head to Egypt to other destinations.

This could further benefit the Balearic Islands where spend-

ing on credit cards by foreign tourists was at a national high this summer. The average expenditure per operation was between €70 and €114, with most being around €75.

The former team revised the state of public lighting which revealed severe problems and

required immediate actions for safety.

Work began nearly a month ago and electricity was cut off.

Cables are being brought in from areas with no deficiencies.

Balearic salary below average THE average gross salary in the Balearic Islands in 2014 was €1,707 per month, which is €173 less than the national average.

According to figures from

the National Institute of Statistics, this puts the region amongst the five with the lowest average gross salaries in Spain. It had fallen €46.4 from 2013.

Some 65,000 workers in the Balearic Islands earn less than €1,000 per month, often because they only have part time contracts.

This supports information

provided by charities such as Caritas, who report that there is a new class of ‘poor workers’ who although they have a job and a salary, still need help to make it through the month.

Too many police officers are Unfit water for currently in Palma prison local residents THEY may be transferred to the mainland if any more officers join them IN the past few months, seven Palma Local Police officers have been sent to prison.

They are accused of operating as a criminal organisation and along with two National Police officers, are in a special module which has been created provisionally as the prison did not have an area for police. The directors of the prison have said that their behaviour is correct and that they are not allowed to mix with other inmates for their own safety.

The prison may request for them to be transferred to the mainland if any more police officers are sent to join them.

In 2009, a report revealed corruption within Palma Local Police force including the names of some of the recently arrested officers.

A high level of absenteeism

Third language agreed THE Councillor for Education and University, Marti March, announced that his department is preparing a law to introduce a third language for public education in the Balearic Islands.

It is expected to be English and the law may come into effect from the next academic year.

He said it will be done with the agreement of all parties involved and aims to improve skills in Catalan, Castillian Spanish, a third language and possibly even a fourth.

The budget for education for 2016 has been increased by 5.36 per cent, to €817.21 million.

The Department also plans to invest €18.6 million to increase the number of teachers and €4.7 million to increase salaries by one per cent.

RECENT tests reveal that the water in Portocolom is still not fit for human consumption. Residents will have to wait until work is completed next summer to provide water from nearby wells to the town.

Sales increase for sobrassada so far SO far this year, sales of Mallorca sobrassada (which looks like chorizo but is like a spread) have increased by 3 per cent in the Balearic Islands alone. Eighty per cent of the sobrassada made in Mallorca is exported to the mainland.

CORRUPT POLICE: Many are suspected to be working while off on sick leave. was noted and many officers were suspected to be working in other matters while on sick leave and still receiving their salary from the city hall.

The mayor at the time, Aino Calvo, ordered an investigation into the behaviour of 20 officers, which confirmed that more than half of them were

involved in illegal businesses.

The investigation, carried out by a private detective and other officers, cost around €30,000.

CRUISE VISIT: Most of the passengers were German.

THE Aidastella cruise ship visited Palma for the second time recently.

O n boa rd, a n e ve nt w as hel d, dur i ng which the Port Authorities, represented by Francisca Leal, gave a gift to the captain, Cornelis Rummler, as this was not done during its first visit.

The visit was part of a 10-day cruise and following the stop in Palma, another 12-day

cruise began, which will ultimately end in Dubai.

Most of the passengers on the 253.3-metre-long ship are German. It came into service in March 2013.

It coincided with a visit from the 193-metre-long Hartland Point, a British la Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship designed to carry military vehicles for the Navy.

Work on church planned WORK to restore the Sant Francesc Basilica in Palma will begin this month.

The first project is to fix the roof which is badly deteriorated and is due to take 18 months. The second phase of the works will include reinforcing the walls to prevent water from entering.

Problems were detected just over a year ago, but there was not enough money to carry out repairs and for the past year, the Franciscans have sought financing to work on the Gothic church which was completed in 1317. So far, they have obtained €900,000 of the €1.1

million required. Most of that is through a bank loan taken out by the Mallorca Bishopric.

The church will not close while it is being restored.

Meanwhile in Petra, controversy has arisen over the lighting of the Sant Pere church, because the opposition in the town hall claims that the Mallorca government’s Heritage Department and the Diocese have not been informed of how it would be carried out.

They claim that lights have been put “all over the place” and that it will affect owls residing in the area.

The mayor, however, is pleased with the final result which he said will also cost less to run.

Island against gender violence THE façades of all buildings belonging to the Mallorca Government had flags supporting the march against gender violence which was held at the weekend.

President Miquel Ensenyat, Councillor for Citizen Participation and Presidency Jesus Jurado, and Director Nina Parron showed their support for the organisers and their opposition to gender violence.

More than 600 people took part in the march in Palma, including the mayor, Jose Hila, and several members of the regional government.

Councillor for Co-operation and Social Services Fina Santiago said that although equality between the sexes was improving little by little, gender violence was getting worse and more dangerous.

Police put stolen goods on display JEWELLERY, watches and electrical items INCA Guardia Civil are exhibiting stolen jewellery, watches and electrical equipment, so that they can be claimed by their owners.

The items, which were recently recovered and are thought to have come from burglaries and thefts committed this summer in Marratxi and the surrounding areas, will be on show at the office at Pont d’Inca from 9am to 2pm.

Driver was four times over limit A DRIVER, 25, was arrested after crashing into a parked car in Camino de La Vileta and falling asleep.

Local Police were alerted to the crash in the early hours of the morning and told that no-one had got out of the car. When they woke the man, who was later found to be four times over the legal alcohol limit, he asked them why they had done so. They asked him if he was unaware that he had crashed and he told them that he had done nothing wrong and said he was going home.

When they showed him

the damage to his vehicle, including a blown-out tyre, he claimed it had been like that for some time. He said there was no need for all the fuss and told the officers that he was going home to bed because he had work the following day. He added that he was a responsible person who pays his taxes.

There were six beer cans and a half empty bottle of whisky in the car, but he maintained he hadn’t been drinking and told the officers that they could leave.

He eventually admitted that he had had one beer and smoked a joint.

Ring-road plans MALLORCA Government’s Territory and Infrastructures Councillor, Mercedes Garrido, met with Campanet Mayor, Magdalena Solivella, and promised to study the options for building a ring-road for the town.

Girl fight A ‘FIGHT to the death’ planned by two underage girls resulted in the mother of one of them being stabbed by the other in Son Roca. The victim was taken to hospital and the attacker was arrested.

Works on track for street improvements FIRST of many projects to update areas WORK has begun in Avenida de Magaluf, Calvia, and Calle Eucaliptus in Peguera and is due to be completed before the tourist season.

The work was agreed in August by the mayor of Calvia at a meeting with the regional government vice-president, and also includes plans for the local Plaza de Magaluf.

Councillor for Mobility, Roads, Work and Maintenance, Juan Cuadros, said this was just

the first of many projects to update areas and improve services for both residents and tourists in Calvia.

Meanwhile, Councillor for Tourism, Commerce and Urban Development, Antonio Garcia, declared that the council had promised to give the area a more modern appearance while businesses and hoteliers would improve what they have to offer.

A YOUNG woman has told Spanish local news site Ultima Hora that in 2013 she was beaten and humiliated by Local Police officers. She has appealed a sentence which ruled she was injured because she resisted arrest.

Health plans PALMA Health Department plans to restart sexual education programmes aimed at schoolchildren, as well as the municipal plan for drug addicts for which no budget had been set aside in recent years.

20th anniversary for university MORE than 10,000 have attended the centre THE Calvia University Centre (CUC), one of the first in the Balearic Islands, recently celebrated its 20th anniversary.

The mayor, Alfonso Rodriguez, attended the celebratory event, as well as many

other members of Calvia Council and Vice Rectors Joana Maria Segui and Margalida Payeras.

The CUC was launched by Calvia Town Hall to promote university studies and set up

resources to favour the creation of associations and promote healthy leisure activities.

In its 20 years, it has provided grants for 130 students and received more than 10,000 participants and users.

Gearing Up For Common Reporting Standard TAX authorities and financial institutions are gearing themselves up for the new automatic exchange of tax information under the Common Reporting Standard, which goes live on 1st January 2016.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which developed the new standard, has warned that transgressors are facing “the last window of opportunity” to disclose previously hidden offshore assets and income.

Each participating country will receive much more information on their taxpayers’ overseas assets than ever before. Until now, they only received information on request, based on evidence of tax fraud or another crime, so receiving information automatically, even on accounts they were not aware of, is a major change.

The new regime covers a wide range of investment income, as well as account balances.

The definition of “financial institutions” that need to report is

The data they collect on their international clients will be passed on to the tax authorities of the client’s country of residence.

In the UK, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has published its draft guidance notes on how the Common Reporting Standard will be implemented.

Financial institutions are obliged to carry out due diligence to establish the tax residency of the account-

holder, and keep the information for six years. For existing accounts this needs to be done by 31st December this year, and they start capturing the information for new accounts from 1st January 2016.

The guidance sets out the information that must be collected and disclosed: account-holder’s name, address and taxpayer identification number; jurisdiction to which the information is reportable; account number (or similar); balance or value at end of calendar year or other appropriate period, and details of the financial institution.

There are also additional reporting requirements depending on the type of account that is being reported on.

HMRC will benefit from information from all the other participating countries and offshore centres around the world.

It will receive the first data in 2017, relating to fiscal year 2016.

The government has been investing in data analytics for

HMRC. This will expose undeclared income and gains arising from overseas assets and investments.

The government is considering a new “strict liability” criminal office for offshore tax evasion. It would not need to prove that the taxpayer intended to evade tax, simply that they had undeclared offshore assets.

Much higher financial penalties could be imposed, and potentially six months imprisonment.

The UK is one of several countries to introduce voluntary disclosure schemes. More and more people are coming forward to regularise their affairs as they realise there is nowhere left to hide in this new world of tax transparency.

The UK’s Liechtenstein Disclosure Facility and Crown Dependencies Disclosure Facilities close at the end of this year, several months earlier than planned. The government said that there will then be one last opportunity for

evaders to come clean, before it starts receiving information under the new regime.

This ‘last chance’ disclosure regime will be less generous than its predecessors.

While much of this article uses the UK as an example, the new automatic exchange of information regime equally affects residents of Spain.

This is a step change in the world of cross-border taxation.

Everyone needs to ensure their tax planning is legal and complaint.

Note that although the first reporting takes place in 2017, it is for calendar year 2016, so there is only a short amount of time before this new regime starts.

50 arrested for brothel fraud CLIENTS had their credit cards stolen and then used GUARDIA CIVIL in the Balearic Islands have completed an operation which has resulted in 50 arrests and four criminal organisations disbanded.

The second phase of an operation codenamed ‘Obsesion’ which investigated alleged credit card fraud in brothels in Palma and Llucmajor, has concluded, and the detainees are charged with fraud, belonging to criminal organisations, crimes against workers’ rights and people trading.

The investigation began several months ago following sev-

eral complaints regarding unauthorised credit card charges. The crimes were linked by four well-known brothels.

Last week, three homes and two brothels were searched, and 20 people were arrested. The officers seized €14,000, documents regarding payment methods and electrical equipment used to process the payments.

Clients had their credit cards stolen while they were in a brothel with one of the girls and using a credit card machine, a company working with the fraudsters made charges on it.

Another method they used was to wait until the client was drunk and used a credit card to order more drink, memorise the PIN number and when the client was with a girl, they stole the card and charged to it drinks and services which they hadn’t requested.

The card was returned without them knowing it had been missing.

Amongst the detainees was the head of three of the organisations, who managed three brothels where women were being sexually exploited.

Trial for beating man to death A MAN, 57, is facing 15 years in prison for allegedly killing another in a shanty town in Palma during an argument.

The events took place in July 2014, when the accused allegedly punched the victim twice and when he fell to the floor, hit him repeatedly on the head with a metal bar, killing him instantly.

The two men were at a settlement for the

homeless and the accused claims he can’t remember a thing because he had drunk more than two bottles of vodka with a friend, as well as several beers.

He said in court that he had no intention of killing the victim. He is charged with manslaughter and if found guilty may have to pay the victim’s relatives €120,000.

Lyn thrives on knowing she has made a difference to other people’s lives.

LYN ADAMS is a name synonymous with fundraising, having raised over tens of thousands of euros for various good causes and local charities over the years.

Lyn, from El Chaparral, Torrevieja, started a keep fit group over 20 years ago called ‘Lyn’s Lively Ladies.’

Upon discovering the news that a close friend had been diagnosed with cancer Lyn gathered together her ‘lively ladies’ and, all adorned in fancy dress and clowns outfits, they hit the local bars shaking buckets and collecting whatever money the generous public were able to donate.

When Lyn herself was diagnosed with breast cancer, the AECC cancer charity was there to offer help and support her.

“They helped me tremendously so I continued the fundraising efforts for the AECC particularly.”

With over €40,000 raised, Lyn took a step back and retired from her fundraising, but that decision didn’t last very long.

Upon hearing of a young mother called Laura who was battling cancer and had been given a terminal diagnosis, Lyn and her husband Ken took it upon themselves to become actively involved again and began organising events and fundraisers to pay for alternative treatment to prolong Laura’s life and give her more time with her husband and four young children.

“We did about eight events in six weeks and even got to

send her and her family to Benidorm for a break.” Thanks to the generous support of locals and businesses, Laura lived for another 18 months but sadly died five years ago.

But knowing the family got longer together is all the drive and reward Lyn needs in keeping her efforts going, although she is very quick to say it is very much a team effort with husband Ken and it is a team effort that has proved very successful over the years. “Ken knows what he is do-

ing and he does his part and I do my part, so we work together but equally have our own roles so that we don’t

cross paths.”

She said there is no better motivation than knowing they have made a

difference to other people’s lives. The efforts are quite an achievement considering she had never done any fundraising previously before moving to Spain.

Lyn’s strength is clearly in her organisational skills and determination which has led her to pull off event after event. Sadly in this day and age they are fully transparent in everything they do and all monies that are collected and donated are logged and receipts given.

The couple do not take a single cent in expenses, with their efforts in fact having personally cost them ‘a small fortune’ over the years in petrol, printing costs and time.

Their latest efforts are now in the annual charity walk which this year is their fourth one in aid of Elche Children’s Home.

In five years’ time, Lyn does not know where she’ll be. Maybe she and Ken will finally be able to sit back and retire as they had originally planned, but many charities will be hoping this won’t be the case and as Lyn admits, “I just can’t say no.”

Beached whale of scientific interest BELIEVED to have been washed ashore during recent storms A WHALE found dead in Sant Elm has raised interest in the scientific community, a s it is a ra re ly seen species which lives a gre a t dis ta nc e from the shores.

at Sant Elm and was spotte d by a me mbe r of the Tursiops Association w hic h he lps to prote c t cetaceans.

Palma Aquarium’s Marine Animal Specialists activated the protocol to move the body and headed to the area to help the B a le a ric Is la nds ’ Wild Animal Recovery Consortium, and the Department for the Environment, Agriculture and Fishery coordinate the recovery mission.

Two days later, with the help of the Guardia Civil and Andratx Town Hall, the whale was taken to a

safe area.

The depar t m ent has said that despite around 40 beached cetaceans appearing on the Balearic coasts every year, this one is of particular scientific interest.

The species can reach up t o seven m et r es i n l engt h and wei gh up t o two tonnes.

They nor m al l y l i ve alone or in small groups and it is not known how many there are and where they are generally located.

However, they are often seen in the seas surrounding the Balearic Islands.

Kill threat A MAN, 25, was arrested in Palma for allegedly stealing two bags full of clothes from a Chinese bazaar, punching the shop assistant during an argument and threatening to kill Local Police officers.

Card theft TWO men were arrested in Palma for allegedly stealing credit cards on golf courses in Mallorca which they then used to buy cigarettes, withdraw money and pay for food and drink in restaurants and bars.

Father tried A MAN, 47, is facing 20 years in prison for allegedly sexually abusing his daughters, from 2004, when they were aged four and two, until 2007. They were later taken into care.

All about interest rate expectations Commentary by Moneycorp EUR weekly currency update Had it not been for the Governor of the Bank of England (BoE) Mark Carney’s comments on Thursday the euro would have lost two cents on the week to sterling. As it was, Mark Carney said there was no certainty of higher UK interest rates next year, let alone this. But at least the expectation is that the next move for sterling rates will be upwards, unlike those in Euroland. The European Central Bank (ECB) president reminded the world on Tuesday that the bank is ‘willing and able’ to ease monetary policy further. Then the Federal Reserve (Fed) chairperson said 24 hours later that US rates could move higher next month.

So for these three currencies the week was all about interest rate expectations and the euro was the loser. It lost one US cent and fell by a net quarter of a cent against the British pound.

On Tuesday the ECB president reminded investors that his bank could well lower euro interest rates next month. And 24 hours later the Fed chairperson reminded them that her bank could well raise them. Although investors had heard it all before, they were still motivated to buy the dollar against the euro.

Gender violence protests THOUSANDS marched through the streets of Madrid

By Linda Hall NIJAR, Huercal de Almeria and Adra gave visible support to Madrid’s March against Gender Violence.

The protest was backed by 450 groups, including 70 state organisations, and the march was headed by victims who survived gender violence. They were followed by thousands of women from all over Spain and representatives of the major political parties with the exception of the Partido Popular.

In Almeria Province, Nijar displayed a banner with the purple awareness ribbon that called for an end to gender violence. Huercal de Almeria followed suit with another purple bow and banner while Adra hung out a white ribbon after a unanimous vote from all parties in favour of the march.

Each will display the banners once more on November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

HEALTH centres have been ordered to continue giving health cards to immigrants by the President of the Valencian Government, Ximo Puig, to ensure all immigrants are able to have health cover.

THE civic centre and Local Police in Calpe have organised a safety workshop aimed at the elderly to teach them aspects of prevention and protection of crime, including how to protect credit cards from being duplicated and how to recognise fraudulent activity.

THREE kilometre tailbacks were caused by a van that caught fire in the Cadiz bound lanes on the A7 motorway near Rincon de la Victoria at about 7am last Monday morning.

Nobody was injured in the blaze, the cause of which remains unknown.

A TOTAL of 19,688 women head their own businesses in Almeria Province. They now account for 35 per cent of all local firms, according to figures released by the Almur women’s association.

Social aid LA CAIXA’S social programme is allocating €812,720 to a total of 38 social organisations across the Valencia Region which will help around 8,000 people in situations of social and cultural vulnerability and with disabilities.

Police patrols ALICANTE is pledging to consider strengthening Local and National Police in rural areas following a spate of robberies raising concerns amongst residents who are asking for more surveillance and street lights to reduce crime.

Blood donors MORE than 900 people in Torrevieja have donated blood so far this year, with 142 new donors registering in 2015.

Home care doubles THE general Hospital in Elche has doubled the number of home care patients, saving them 16,700 days of hospitalisation. The move allows people to receive care in their own home while freeing up much needed space and appointment slots at the hospital.

Crane death A FORTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD man died in Nerja on Wednesday, November 4, while he was working on the Pago de las Minas industrial estate.

He fell to his death from a crane from a height of five or six metres, for reasons which so far remain unknown.

Shooting stars THE Calar Alto Observatory videoed three of the largest meteorites seen over Almeria in recent years on the night of November 6-7. Two of them were identified as fragments from the Encke comet.

Earthquake Guarding assets VLADIMIR PUTIN has signed a new law weakening the jurisdictional immunity of foreign governments in Russia.

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake rocked Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula last week, the Russian Academy of Sciences’ said. “The earthquake was registered at 4:59 Moscow time and its epicentre was a depth of 34 kilometres.”

HACIENDA, the Spanish Tr e a s u r y, h a s i d e n t i f i e d €40 billion of assets deposited overseas of which 45 per cent is said to be lodged in tax havens, according to recent reports.

The largest amount estimated at €19.87 billion is unsurprisingly lodged in Switzerland, with €9.98 billion in Luxembourg and €4.07 billion in Andorra, which itself is jointly administered by Spain.

The Treasury has found €15.04 billion in areas said t o b e d i ff i c u l t f o r a c c e s s and it was noted that Spanish taxpayers have more money in Swiss banks than G e r m a n y, F r a n c e a n d t h e United Kingdom put together.

Michelin to close Antrim factory THE Michelin tyre factory in Ballymena, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, is due to close in 2018 with the loss of 860 jobs, although the company also announced that it will increase production at its Dundee plant and upgrade its production facility in Stoke-on-Trent.

According to the BBC, Unite union’s Davy Thompson said in addition to workers employed directly by Michelin, “there are approximately 500 contractors and many more in the wider economy who now face the threat of redundancy as a result of this announcement.”

Michelin said in a statement: “There is a strong need to reduce overcapacity and concentrate Michelin truck tyre production in larger, more competitive sites. Despite great efforts and progress being made in previous years, other European plants are still more competitive than Ballymena.”

“What the committee has been expecting is that the economy will continue to grow at a pace that is sufficient to generate further improvements in the labour market and to return inflation to our 2 per cent target over the medium term,” Yellen told the Financial Services Committee of the House of Representatives.

A meeting of the Federal Reserve’s policy committee in December is the next and final opportunity for any increase to take place this year after US interest rates have been near zero since December 2008.

THERE are considerable downsides to running a business, especially in Spain. Notorious for its impractical employment laws and anti-business ethos; anyone whose business survives 12 months should be awarded the commercial equivalent of the Victoria Cross. One of the biggest handicaps in business is the difficulty encountered when one is tempted to fire useless staff.

Customer and staff incentives are an essential component of successful businesses.

Some of you, likely retired by now, will recall the Co-op shopping chain’s dividends. Later on there were Green Shield stamps. These were ‘cash or kind’ incentives for showing shop or brand loyalty. Although the returns were ludicrously small, such inducements worked like a dream.

Because the retailer could rely on customer loyalty there was little need for offering in-store discounts. Best of all, the costs and the management of the scheme were added to the customer’s shop-

Reward for achievement is widespread in commission-only sales industries. Every salesperson knows that, in addition to their hard-earned sales commission, they will be rewarded by incentives.

‘Just a bunch of prattling females!’

INSTEAD of adoring each other, its obvious they only truly adore their own egos LEAPY LEE SAYS IT

OTHERS THINK IT THIS WEEK, flicking through the daily mish mash of rubbish that now passes for daytime TV, I happened upon an edition of ‘Loose Women.’ The title, a rather pathetic attempt at a double entendre, rather sums up the quality of this whole pontificating presentation. Basically it is a bunch of prattling females, pretending to adore each other, when it is painfully obvious that the only things they truly adore are their own egos.

On this occasion, the panel was discussing a recent fire. Finger hovering above the remote, I hesitated before moving on.

‘And so,’ shrilled the one in the middle.

‘We have invited a proper fireman to come on the show and discuss the problem.’

We were then treated to the sight of the fireman. Stripped to the waist, clad in helmet, shorts and boots and looking for the entire world like a ‘Village People’ reject,

Ok Leapy, what’s your point? Women’s equality girls, that’s my point. Gooses and Ganders loves. If this had been a roomful of

men, and the guest a scantily clad nurse or police woman, arriving on prime time television to a roomful of baying men, the reaction from the Pankhurst brigade would probably have made tomorrows headlines.

I know, from reading her column, that one of this panel, Ms Janet Street Porter is an almost maniacal women’s libber, who actually made the papers last week for recoiling in horror when another male guest, Olly Murs, attempted to kiss her on the cheek; stating she didn’t like ‘touchy and feely men.’ No I’m sorry girls; you simply can’t have it all ways.

I’m afraid I’m one of the old school, who still thinks that the event of ‘the pill’ created a whole gender, totally confused and struggling to come to terms with a completely unnatural existence, that to my mind, nature certainly didn’t intend!

Isn’t it odd, that nine out of 10 medical malpractices are committed by people with almost unpronounceable names? Funny that.

SOME days are great and everything is perfect. Others... well, my fervent wish is that I had stayed in bed.

We recently returned from a week on the lovely island of Mallorca, which, amongst other things, is synonymous with a certain brand of high quality pearl jewellery.

My wife is a fan and naturally a trip to the factory shop in Manacor was high on the princess’s priority list.

We wandered around the premises for some time admiring their comprehensive collection.

The flexible friend in my wallet was exhausted, our companions had expressed interest in taking a coffee break, and I had a desire to attend the little boy’s room.

For convenience I had attached my camera to the belt on my shorts

CAFÉ BREAK: An amusing experience. before leaving home, but I had not taken this into account as I loosened my clothing, because as soon as I unbuttoned, the extra weight conveyed my shorts to the floor.

As I was pulling up my Primark’s best, the door opened revealing a man frozen in his tracks at the sight before him.

by the fact that I was sporting my Flintstone underpants and the newc ome r was gr eet ed by but t ocks portraying a grinning Barney Rubble.

In the haste to hike up my errant Bermudas, I banged my forehead forcibly on the urinal and in staggering backwards, inadvertently dis lodg ed m y Ray- Ban shades w hic h f el l wi t h a pl op i nt o t he aforementioned piece of porcelain be c a use, yup, t he dr ai n was blocked.

Gingerly holding my dripping sunglasses and forcing a nonchalant whistle, I rinsed them under the hot tap, which predictably produced only cold water. My erstwhile companion in the meantime had scarpered without even bothering to wash his hands.

I joined my good lady and our friends in the café, where I recounted my bathroom experience much to everyone’s amusement and as they laughed at my misfortune, a familiar but nervous looking ge nt l em an appr oached our ta ble and asked what we woul d like to order.

“Just coffee, no food!” I whispered to the others.

HAVING twice carried the burden of a home mortgage and on several occasions rented, I am in no doubt as to which represents the best value for money. We fool ourselves that we own our homes. You miss a couple of mortgage payments and it will be made clear that you are a tenant and the bank is your landlord.

I ditched the nonsense of placing a deposit, most likely borrowed, on my own home. The penny dropped, the bank was buying the property and I was renting it from the bank. The rent was flexible, in their favour, and there were charges attached.

You don’t need a degree in commonsense to figure out where the inspiration for a mortgage came from. From any bank’s perspective, lending you money, which incidentally they don’t have either, is a licence to print real money lu-

Weekend of contrasts IT has been a real weekend of contrasts with regards to gender violence in Spain, with a mixture of both encouraging and depressing news over just two days.

An estimated 20,000 people marched through the streets of Madrid on Saturday November 7, against gender violence and to highlight the fact that almost 1,400 victims have been killed by their current or former partners since 1995.

In actual fact, despite the figures showing that on average one woman is killed every four days in Spain by a member of the opposite sex and despite the so-called ‘macho’ image of many Spanish men, the country comes low on the list of gender violence across Europe. Perhaps surprisingly, the worst offenders are Finland, Norway, Denmark and Sweden.

Having seen the massive support for the protection of women on Saturday, there was a complete reversal on Sunday with four women being murdered by partners or relatives across Spain.

A mother and daughter were shot by the daughter’s estranged partner; a 28-yearold woman was shot by her partner who then turned the gun on himself, and another woman was reported to have been stabbed to death by her son.

Violence is endemic but we have to hope that if enough people protest and youngsters are properly educated that it will eventually become a thing of the past.

Like lemmings, so many rush into the bank. Thereupon, they bend over the bank manager’s desk and invite their backsides to be kicked. The bank manager’s shoes are polished as he takes such liberties.

It is said that the dream of the older generation was to pay off a mortgage; the dream of the younger generation is to get one. Is this a dream or is it a nightmare? From the bank’s perspective again, it is a case of heads I win, tails you lose.

Our leaders are responsible for taking the Great out of Britain Re: Why is Great Britain no longer great?

LOVED what you had to say, Nora Johnson. My wife had to wait for six months for the treatment of her breast cancer here in Cornwall; it was a really horrendous time. Currently she is well and we are keeping our fingers crossed it stays that way.

As for our so-called leaders/MPs who in the last 30 years or so have allowed what was once a truly great country to become what it is today, every one of them should in my mind be lined up against a wall and shot for treason.

I would not trust one of them to put my dustbin out for collection let alone run our country. Only last week they were near on begging China to build us a power station. China? Are we unable to do anything on our own any more?

Having in the past served in the Forces as a person who loved his country like no other, no way would I do such a thing now.

Blue lights for all priority vehicles AS part of a new series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

NEW LAW: Flashing blue lights.

FROM February 2016, all priority vehicles on Spain’s roads will display flashing blue lights. Currently, fire vehicles, ambulances and tow trucks indicate that they are priority vehicles by use of flashing orange lights, only the police and Guardia Civil use blue.

Spain was the only European country which had not adopted the standard but a change to the law has been published this week, which will come into force early next year.

Are you allowed to exceed the speed limit while overtaking?

This can be a confusing question as the answer is both yes, and no. But, mostly no.

According to Article 51 of the Reglamento General de Circulación, “the maximum fixed speeds for conventional roads which do not pass through urban areas may only be exceeded by up to 20 kilometres per hour by saloon cars and motorcycles whilst overtak-

ing other vehicles travelling at lesser speeds.”

This clause first came about to allow cars to pass a slower moving vehicle in the shortest time possible, allowing an increase in speed in order to execute the move quickly.

The word ‘execute’ being a reminder that overtaking is one of the most dangerous manoeuvres. In the event of a head-on collision, speed is added to that of the oncoming vehicle, so a crash where two vehicles are travelling at 90 kph is the equivalent of crashing at 180 kph, when the two speeds are combined.

The rule does exist, but only in certain circumstances and it can only ever apply to cars and motorcycles.

The clause is not permitted on motorways, dual carriageways or in towns, or cities. This means it can only be used on so-called conventional roads, single carriageway, with no central reservation and outside of towns.

The complainer was anonymous In this case the complaint is not really anonymous. Accidents on the island A WOMAN, 83, died from the serious injuries she sustained when she was hit by a car when crossing the road in Port d’Alcudia.

She died at the scene despite attempts to resuscitate her.

On Palma seafront, a young woman was also seriously injured when she was hit by a car while crossing the road.

A youth, 17, was seriously injured after crashing his motorcycle head-on into a car on a dangerous bend on the road between Ullaro and Campanet. The driver of the car was uninjured and the motorcyclist was taken to hospital.

Six people, including a woman and two children,

aged seven and 15, who were taken to Son Espases Hospital, were injured on an accident on the Inca road near Alcampo.

A man, 57, was arrested

by Local Police in Palma after crashing into two vehicles, one of them parked, when attempting to exit a square where his car was parked.

He tested positive for alcohol.

In Andratx, the occupants of four vehicles who were s t o p p e d a t t r a ff i c l i g h t s were injured when a car crashed into them at the exit from Andratx toll motorway near Portopi. Two were taken to hospital.

In Palma, two cars collided in the Santa Catalina

area and some of the occupants had to be rescued and taken to hospital.

Three accidents, each involving three vehicles, took place within an hour on Inca motorway near Marratxi, slightly injuring seven people and causing five kilometres of tailbacks.

Two vehicles collided in Palma in the early hours of the morning and several of the occupants had to be taken to hospital.

One of the drivers, who was drunk, failed to give way at a sign. He was uninjured.

The two occupants of the other car were trapped inside although paramedics were able to help them and they were taken to hospital.

I’M currently on a trip to the USA and as much as I like visiting the country some of their customs drive me nuts!

Like all this, ‘You have a nice day’, business which is usually said to everybody and is so insincere.

Tipping! I don’t mind tipping but in the US it’s a crazy 20 per cent. And God help you if you go into a restaurant and try and leave less for whatever reason, like maybe the service was no good.

You will get abused by the same angel that informed you on arrival her ‘name is Mary and she will be your server today’ and who then proceeds to not be very good at her job at all and the food wasn’t all that.

Be prepared to be chased out of the place.

I stay at one particular hotel. On arrival a man opens the cab door and I tip

him. Someone else then helps me with my case and I tip him. I go to reception, check in and go to my room. My luggage arrives and I tip the porter.

Every day when I go to breakfast the waitress says to me, “Good morning, how are you today?” “Fine thanks,” I reply. She then asks, “and where are you from?” “Spain,” I reply. Day two it’s the same questions and same replies.

Days three, four and five go pretty m uch t he sam e. On day si x I ’ ve had enough so I decide to expand on my answers and before she finishes her sentences she gets senkered! “Good morning and how.....” “Well, to tell you the truth I’m not all that today.

“My legs ache as I have a very rare neurological condition, my kidney failure is still at stage three, the scars on my chest and legs also ache a bit because in t he ni ght I t ook a dr i nk and st ar t ed coughing and think I might have done som et hi ng... Oh and by t he way I haven’t moved - I still live in Spain!”

The lady is now staring at me like I’m a raving lunatic and I wander off looking for my sugar free yoghurt.

Don’t waste your time counting the calories FitFoxy

I DO not believe that there is anything more tedious than having to work out the calorie content of every single food item that you consume.

However, I can relate to it, as I was guilty of doing just that through my teens. I knew absolutely nothing about how the body functioned. I can remember having a calorie counter book that was like a dictionary A-Z of every popular supermarket branded food in the country. What a bonus! Let’s say I am allowed 1,500 calories a day and I just have a hankering for Mars bars… there are around 260 calories in a Mars bar, I can eat four of them and still be under my calorie allowance, right? WRONG!

I didn’t really replace my meals with four Mars bars but you get the idea.

However, I did adopt this way of thinking. Of course, I never lost weight, and with this method of eating I was never going to look good, and to top it all off I became obsessed with food.

Now, I know better. I have studied both the physical and mental side of dieting and exercise, read many books and tried many different eating and exercise plans. One thing I will share with you is that once I stopped obsessing about how many calories I was allowed to have and how many I was eating, and focused on building a fit, lean body with my exercise sessions… BINGO!!! I started to get the results.

There is also the obsession of calorie burn relating to how many calories you are burning depending on what exercise you are doing. The truth is any exercise is going to help you to lose weight as

long as you are eating healthily and cutting down on treats.

However, the defining factor of your body type, current weight and gender will determine how many calories you are likely to use up in any one training session.

Any exercise class that promises that you will burn 800 calories per 45-minute session is, I will boldly say, lying to you!

OK, maybe if you happen to look like film star The Rock, then you could burn that amount of calories in an intense training session, but I know I could do the same class and only expect to burn around 360, maybe more if I’m lucky.

But why fret over that? If you eat healthy food, aim for a minimum of three meals a day, cut out the junk and alcohol, you won’t need to worry about how many calories you are burning in class, you will see the physical changes and you will lose weight.

GOOD DIET: Calls for better monitoring of nutrition.

Malnutrition in cancer patients is a concern SPAIN’S Foundation for Excellence and Quality Oncology (ECO) has warned that between 25 and 85 per cent of cancer patients develop some degree of malnutrition which results in decreased survival rates and poorer quality of life.

The ECO foundation said malnutrition is higher in patients with tumours in the head, neck, pancreas and digestive system.

In Spain, for every million inhabitants there are 4.5 cancer patients with malnutrition, 14 patients per million population in the UK suffering and 24 in Italy.

As a result, the ECO is calling for action to improve the detection of these cases and to better monitor the nutritional status of patients who are suffering from cancer and going through treatment.

Blood pressure worries

Dear Doctor, I am a 60-year-old, fit and active woman of average weight. I have had high blood pressure and irregular heartbeat for 10 years, which was perfectly controlled by medication until recently. A month ago I started feeling strange and found my blood pressure had jumped from 120/73 to 163/97. After a week it was still up so I went to the doctor and he upped my medication twice.

Blood tests showed I had high cholesterol and my doctor decided it could be due to one of the medications I take and also suggested I might have hyperthyroidism.

He has asked me to go on a no milk or dairy diet for three months to see if diet is my problem. I find this bewildering as for the last 20 years I have only eaten a healthy, low-fat diet with hardly any red meat and everything skimmed.

He wants to see me again in two weeks to check my blood pressure.

Although I trust him I would love a second opinion as I am worried that all these problems combined could be dangerous and I

might need extra medication now.

I have been researching on the internet but end up going round in circles as all these things seem to be interconnected and complex.

High blood pressure is a chronic problem which can sometimes, for various reasons, get out of control. It takes patience and gradual increases in medication to get it back under control.

The campaign ‘There’s a Beer For That’ has been organised by the British Beer Alliance and reveals numerous myths about the nutritional value of beer.

One in 10 people incorrectly think a half a pint of beer has more calories than a glass of wine, but it has just 91 compared to 141 calories in an average 175ml glass of wine.

A study showed that a quarter of people think beer has more sugar than coke but the campaign shows that a can of coke can have 34 grams of sugar, with a pint of beer of 4 per cent alcohol, has just 2.5.

A study by Italy’s Fondazione di Ricerca e Cura also found that a pint a day reduces the risk of heart disease or stroke by a third.

Vatican scandal hits Mallorca BOOK claims almost half a million euros paid for the beatification of Sencelles nun THE scandal surrounding the arrest of Spanish priest, Lucio Angel Vallejo Balda, for allegedly revealing Vatican secrets has a Mallorca angle.

His arrest came just before the release of books which claim to be based on information provided by the priest. One reportedly reveals that €482,000 was paid to the Vatican for the beatification of Sister Francinaina Cirar. Born in Sencelles, Mallorca, in 1781, she was the founder of the Sister of Charity Congregation, and died in 1855.

She is a very popular figure and was beatified in October 1989 by Pope John Paul II. Known as ‘Aunt Xiroia, she is buried in the crypt of the Convent of the Sisters of Charity in Sencelles, visited by many people who are demanding that she be canonised.

A book called ‘Avarizia’ by Italian journalist Emiliano Fittipaldi is said to claim that almost half a million euros was paid to the Vatican for her to be beatified.

The author says that “being a saint has a price” and claims that the higher the amount paid, the quicker the beatification is carried out.

WAITING lists for operations in public hospitals in the Balearic Islands have b e e n r e d u c e d by 1.04 per cent since September last year.

According to the head of the Health Service, Juli Fuster, a plan is being put i n p l a c e t o r educe waiting times for operations and for seeing specialists.

The wait for specialists has risen 7.4 per cent since last year.

In September, there w ere 1 3 , 7 6 3 p a t i e n t s waiting for an operation, of which 20.6 per cent wait more than 180 days.

The average wait is 117 days. The aim is to make sure no-one has to wait more than 180 days.

UNDER INVESTIGATION: One teenager died in a fire and another had to be rescued from his cell.

GUARDIA CIVIL have discovered that another youth, 17, had to be rescued from his cell at Es Pinaret Centre for Young Offenders in Marratxi after it

caught fire in May. Last month, a boy of 17 died at the centre in a fire in his room.

found that a security guard was on leave after he was injured when rescuing another young man in May and that none of the alarms went off.

Balearic soldiers save the day A GROUP of soldiers from the Balearic Islands repelled a rebel attack in the Central African Republic while escorting a convoy from the EU military assessment mission.

The 22 soldiers from the Palma 47 Infantry Regiment Unit, led by coronel Juan Jose Martin, have been in the area since May and are due to return soon.

The events took place in Bangui when the Spanish Instant Reaction Team was fired upon. They responded and left the area. It wasn’t the first time they were involved in similar hostile events.

This week, a second group of soldiers headed to the country after being bid farewell by their relatives and Balearic Commander General, Fernando Azar.

Comfort is the main reason with people saying that owning a pet can be a calming and reassuring experience.

Security and social interaction were also important and the last reason people mentioned was that pets convey a status symbol.

HIGH INTELLIGENCE: Dogs are intelligent and training them is rewarding.

Owners must not regard dogs as almost human as this is an insult to our canine friend. In this day and age we still do not know how dogs do some things, such as detecting mines and drugs. Intelligence is not an important factor in a dog’s make up.

It is a fact that nearly all problem dogs are very intelligent and certainly a fact that few dog owners understand their instincts.

Dogs and indeed all animals learn by association of ideas, they do not reason at all, but simply react to what is happening and do not

think about what has happened or is about to happen. It is believed that sometimes they work out a problem for themselves.

All training should be based on this. For training purpose we try to create associations we want and avoid those we do not want, by what is known as correction and reward. Correction means any act which forces the dog to obey, like pushing him into the sit position.

A dog will accept a human substitute for a canine leader and this willingness to accept a human makes him easier to train than most other animals.

Many people are regarded as experts when they have trained a dog of one breed to a very high standard. Faced with a difficult dog they would not know where to start. Training methods vary just as much as dogs and their owners do. There are however, many accepted exercises that form a useful basis for most dogs and most owners. Many people do not fully realise their responsibilities and try very hard to comply and end up with a dog that will bite, cause a road accident, etc. Why? Because few owners understand canine mentality.

NOT all pets are dogs or cats, many of us have smaller furry friends such as hamsters, gerbils, mice or chinchillas, most of which have specific needs when it comes to looking after them.

Over the next couple of weeks we will take a look at their basic needs and the little things that make their ‘little furry’ lives happy.

Chinchillas: One of the larger of this group, and the furriest. They need quite a big indoor enclosure or large cage because they are very active. Needing lots of exercise, it’s a good idea to have different levels for them to climb and jump from.

They also need an array of interesting toys so they don’t get bored, the toys don’t have to be elaborate, cardboard toilet rolls and boxes that they can hide in and chew on are ideal. Wooden seesaws, shelters, and ramps and hammocks are also favourites.

Make feeding time a ‘fun time.’ Scatter some food around the cage and hide some in tubes, so they have

an adventure hunting for treasure. Keep some toys stored aside for different weeks.

Saving boredom, this helps keep the toys interesting.

Some don’ts!

Don’t let your chinchilla have any plastic toys. Apart from the toxicity problems, these can splinter and be very harmful if eaten.

If they like to, or rather insist on chewing wood, let them chew on branches made from softwoods, such as untreated apple or pear, not furniture. Ideally, give them a gnawing block to help wear their teeth down.

Chinchillas love a daily dust bath. It keeps their coat in good condition. Without it, their fur becomes matted.

Make sure the dust bath is large enough for them to roll in. Fill it with sand to a depth of at least 6cm.

Don’t let them stay in the bath forever. Limit it to 10 minutes or so, once a day. If you leave it for longer, they may view it as a toilet and leave you a present. Excessive dust bathing can also cause eye problems.

AFTER the recent wet spell and with continuing temperatures in the 20s, now is a good time to take and plant cuttings of herbaceous plants and succulents. Cuttings can be easily taken and roots will soon grow whether replanted in the open ground or in pots.

• Rose cuttings Roses are easily propagated from cuttings in Spain.

Take a cutting of 40 to 70 centimetres long, trim off the base at a budding point, trim off any side shoots, trim the top at a bud or group of existing leaves, cut a tight slit in the base and slide in one or two dry sweetcorn seeds tying these in with raffia if they won’t stay in place. Then make a deep slit in good soil with a spade and fill it with water.

Then when the water has drained away dip the end of the cutting in rooting powder and slide into the slit pushing it in so that 70 per cent is below the soil level.

Finally fill in the slit with

• Shrubs If you wish to have additional plants of a favourite shrub, a cutting from any

side branch has a good chance of rooting and flowering even next year whether planted in deep pots or directly into the ground.

My garden has Hibiscuses, a Buddleja, Neriums, Pittosporum, Callistemons, Cistus, Echiums and Hydrangeas started this way.

• Climbing shrubs These can be propagated from cuttings or by burying the end of hanging branches

The effect of rainwater on swimming pools HOW much does it influence pool chemistry?

GIVEN that most swimming pools are, on average, 1.2 metres in depth, two centimetres of rain (which is quite a bit) would only change the make-up of the water by 1/48th.

The other 47/48ths are still the original chemistry; therefore, should still be very near its original composition.

There are other factors to take into account: acid rain or excessive pool

deck run-off, for example, may affect the pH levels to a degree.

However, if the water had an original balance of 7.5 and given that acid ra in w o u ld h a ve a pH of a round 5, 1/48th of the volume would bring the total down to around 7.3/7.4.

In almost all cases the only significant impact of rain is that it brings c o n ta min ate s , c a us e d more by the

w ind tha n the ra in. M ore fre que nt vacuuming after a storm would help with this.

Shocking your pool isn’t necessary, although, it’s not a bad idea either. If you get an extremely heavy rainfall, you could shock your pool for good measure. This will help fight off any contaminants that the rain may have brought to your pool.

Today is sunny so I am about to go out and take cuttings for planting elsewhere in the garden or preparing for friends with new gardens. In some cases the propagations are being stimulated by the need done to tidy overgrown areas of the garden. But how better to pass on unwanted rooted plants than composting them or throwing them in the garbage bag!

One job I have been doing this week is to plant up any bare holes in the rocky face of a 28 metre long dry stone wall that we inherited when moving into the house.

Some were repeats from our own garden and others from friends or overhanging bushes that needed pruning as one passed along pavements.

And his mealy-mouthed declaration: “I’m ready for history’s judg-

ment.” In an interview with the US news channel CNN, the former PM admitted ‘mistakes’ and the conflict’s role in the rise of Islamic State but defended armed intervention in 2003.

Hang on there, Tony! Whilst you’re about it, what about all the other ‘mistakes’ you could apologise for apart from that ‘illegal’ war? How about some of the following: opening the doors to immigration; innumerable quangos; overpaid public servants; the PFI school/hospital programme; public spending (the national debt now exceeds £1.5 trillion). Let alone approval of Gordon Brown’s financial decisions as Chancellor that caused huge damage to the UK’s economy.

But why is Blair making this statement now? And why to a US net-

work rather than British broadcasters or newspapers? Nicola Sturgeon, the Scottish First Minister, immediately accused him of conducting a ‘spin operation’ now that the long-awaited Chilcot Inquiry - expected to be highly critical - is due to be published. The war led to large-scale public protests and rebellions against Mr Blair and the Labour Party. Saddam Hussein was toppled but around 500,000 people were killed in warrelated deaths from 2003.

Yes, Mr Blair. You’ll go down in history as having transformed the country. From something great and promising to something confused and poorer. Your premiership was all spin and bluster.

UK shopping mall owner Intu to expand in Spain with new developments

TRAFFORD CENTRE: This shopping mall in Manchester is owned by Intu.

FTSE-100 company Intu, which owns such British shopping malls as the Trafford Centre in Manchester, is planning a £500 million (€707.75 million) investment in Spain over the next five to seven years.

One site for a new development in Malaga is already owned by the company and they also have options on an-

other three in Spain. Chief Executive David Fischel said that Intu plan to do more developments on new sites instead of taking over existing malls.

“The market has got a lot more competitive for acquisitions and there aren’t actually that many quality centres that we would want to buy,” said Fischel.

Intu owns or has part ownership in 18 of the UK’s largest shopping centres, reported as having around 400 million yearly visitors.

Euribor hits another all-time low THE Euribor rate, used to calculate interest on most of the mortgages signed in Spain, still hasn’t found its base and ended October at a new historical low of 0.134 per cent.

This new low means mortgage-holders due for revisions this month will save an average of €11 per month on their repayments.

So far this year the rate has suffered almost 67 per cent drops as it started 2015 at 0.323 per cent.

Is the rate heading for 0 per cent? XTB analyst Jaime Diez has said he believes it is. Following the latest meeting of the European Central Bank, he said, the fall has picked up speed.

“The tendency is likely to continue over the coming months,” Diez predicted.

The average price for homes this October increased by 0.8 per cent compared to the same month in 2014, Tinsa has reported, the first year-toyear increase since 2008.

Yet, the valuators stressed, price stabilisation still needs to strengthen.

The Tinsa IMIE General and Large Markets index reported that the Balearic and Canary Islands and the Mediterranean coastal areas of Spain were mainly responsible for the October increase, with progress of 4.2 and 3.6 per

Meanwhile, metropolitan areas registered a 44.4 per cent drop and capitals and large cities fell by 44.5 per cent.

The smallest falls since prices peaked were in the Balearic and Canary Islands (29.2 per cent) and small towns in general (-36.6 per cent).

This is a crucial moment in the sale, you have to make sure your property looks inviting from the street, in the day time and the evening (often buyers drive past the property in the evening for a second look).

You need to look at the outside appearance of your property and start by checking for necessary repair and paintwork, especially to the front entrance walls, gates, and fences.

The garden should be well maintained, make sure the hedges and trees are tidy, especially around windows and patio doors etc.

Clear paths and terraces, clean windows and place plant pots or hanging baskets with colourful flowers at the entrance and front door.

Keep everything clean and tidy, store unsightly items such as bins out of sight, including bicycles and toys.

We are now in the winter season and it gets dark early, so check all

outdoor lights are working. To make the outside of your home more attractive, fit extra outdoor lighting, and make sure all pool lights are working.

If you have pets, keep them secured and away from the entrance when buyers arrive, barking dogs can put people off.

Make sure you have a parking space available for the buyer’s car at the time of the appointment.

So the buyers have arrived at your home they have got out of their car and are ringing your door bell, excellent! Phase one of selling your house is now complete.

A turbo engine for motorbikes AS if a 600cc model wasn’t quick enough already, Suzuki has been busy developing a turbo- powered bike engine.

The engine, (no bike, just the engine) was unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show. Suzuki say it is a turbocharged eight-valve DOHC paralleltwin, and that it is productionready. The project, and what bike it will be installed in, are still a secret; officially, the only thing they would say about it was: ‘Turbo engine for motorcycles’, and not a word more.

A new proposal has been presented which would create moorings for around 60 boats along a newly created ‘groin’ measuring 72 metres but the Balearic Environment Commission has made it clear that it would not give its approval until such time as an environmental impact assessment is completed.

By John Smith THE thrill of speed is not exclusive to those on land which means that powerboat racing has been popular for over 100 years and as was often the case, it was first championed in the UK when the Automobile Club of Great Britain and Ireland, and its offshoot, the Marine Motor Association organised a race of ‘auto-boats’ in 1903.

As early as 1904 it was recognised as a sport and a race took place from the south-eastern coast of England to Calais.

The ‘craze’ spread to the USA and its first race is recorded as having taken place in California in 1911 and from then on, until it stuttered when America joined the allies in the First World War, the number of races increased considerably.

The Cowes to Torquay race

was launched by Sir Max Aitken as the first offshore powerboat race in Britain in 1961 and it still continues to the present day.

Its success encouraged several countries in Europe and the Middle East to follow suit and it can claim to have introduced offshore powerboat racing to the rest of the world outside the United States.

Although offshore powerboat racing has not caught the public imagination like Formula 1 racing, it has developed considerably with faster boats, the rise and fall of the navigator as

courses shrink and the move to twin hulled boats.

Spain is not a major player in this area apart from the fact that there are plenty of high powered pleasure craft in its waters but for some years the Spirit of Valencia team competed within Europe. However, as costs became increasingly more prohibitive, it is now looking for sponsors to allow it to race again in the future.

Huge jump in cruise visits RECENTLY released figures show that 2,618 cruise ships carrying six million passengers visited Spain in the first nine months of 2015 which shows an overall nationwide increase of 11.7 per cent.

There were some incredibly high jumps in visits for some areas, especially Las Palmas and the Bay of Cadiz which saw increases of over 20 per cent and Barcelona seeing 1.9 million passengers visiting.

The Balearics saw a creditable increase with passengers up by 16 per cent to 1.4

million on 605 vessels and interestingly, September saw even more ships and more passengers with the reason being at least in part, the problems of instability in countries in North Africa and a general increase in cruise holidays, catered for by the number of new vessels being commissioned.

Spain as a whole currently sees less cruise-ships and passengers than Italy, but with the way things are moving, it may well catch up or even overtake its biggest rival.

The design was intended to break away from the traditional look of the aft deck on most superyachts, according to Michael Leach Design which drew inspiration from the flowing shapes of Killer Whales so that Palladium’s

line extends from the superstructure down to the transom.

The owner’s love of water activities is quite obvious from the fixed beach club area at the stern, dedicated to on-water fun. A staircase leads down from the aft main deck to the swim pad and from there, a huge door opens up, to allow access to an area for storing jet skis and wave runners as well as windsurfer boards.

Unsurprisingly, this spectacular creation is reserved for the owner’s pleasure and is not available to charter.

Holidays set for 2016 THE Inter-Island Commerce Advisory Committee has approved that shops in the Balearic Islands will be able to open on 16 Sundays and holidays in 2016.

The dates are January 3 and 10, March 24, April 3, May 22, June 5, July 3 and 24, August 7 and 15, September 4, October 12, November 27 and December 4, 8 and 18.

It was also agreed that two committees would be created and begin to operate next year, one to reform commerce laws and the other to develop plans to improve commerce.

ANNA WARDLEY: Swimming challenge will start in May next year.

BRITISH endurance swimmer Anna Wardley, 40, has announced the official charity partners for her Balearic Swim Challenge at an event held at Palma Aquarium.

Anna will undertake the 215km swim between Menorca and mainland Spain in support of three marine charities with each of the three stages being linked to one of the three Balearic based organisations.

The world record setting swims, taking place between May and July next year, will raise money for Joves Navegants (Leg one from Menorca to Mallorca), Marine Inspirations (Leg two from Mallorca to Ibiza) and the Marine Animal Rescue project based at Palma Aquarium (Leg three from Ibiza to mainland Spain).

Joan Noguera, director of the Spanish government’s Balearic Sport Foundation, said: “I think it’s important that the government is involved in this kind of event and we’ll be showcasing it on our website.

“Anna is an inspiration, not only for young people, but for everyone because of her mental strength and physical determination. She’s an example for everyone, even professional sportsmen and women.

“We are pleased Anna has decided to do her challenge in the Balearic Islands as it draws attention to our part of the world.”

Anna said she was ‘overwhelmed’ by the enthusiasm and support already shown for her Balearic Swim Challenge.

Anna will be in the water on her own for the solo attempt, which will be tracked by satellite and independently verified by a team of observers.

“It’s incredible how positive and enthusiastic people are about this project and they seem to understand the magnitude of the challenge I’m facing.

“I now need as many people as possible to back my #NeverDuckOut Crowdfunder fundraising campaign as this is essential to cover our vital costs. This is a huge endeavour and we really need people to get behind it.”
