Relief as alleged burglars rounded up and arrested ONE of the gang caught red-handed inside a bar in Torre de Benagalbon By Eleanor Hawkins Axarquia residents and business-owners are breathing sighs of relief this week following the arrest of an organised gang of Eastern Europeans suspected to be behind a wave of burglaries in the area. Under Operation Limba, the Guardia Civil caught one of the gang red-handed inside a bar in Torre de Benagalbon and, although he put up a fight, officers managed to arrest him but suffered minor injuries in the process. Following the first arrest, officers were able to locate the rental property the gang was working from and set up surveillance. A further three people were arrested as they arrived at the house. The gang, the police reported, was very well organised, and members always worked in bala-

clavas and drove a foreign-plated car to avoid being tracked down. Now, thanks to the efficient work on the part of the Guardia Civil, home and business-owners can rest easier in the knowledge that there is at least one less prospective danger to their properties and possessions loose on the streets. Following this and other recent events in the Rincon de la Victoria area, including attacks against religious heritage, local Citizen Safety Councillor Sonia Jimenez held a meeting with representatives from the Local Police and Guardia Civil forces to try and draw up a collaboration project to crack down on crime. Measures approved included joint security checks, co-ordinated surveillance in areas considered to be at risk, and increased communication between the two forces.
