Terrace collapse THE second floor terrace of a building on Paseo de la Caletilla in Almuñecar collapsed just before 6pm on Sunday (October 25) giving neighbours a nasty fright.

Luckily the owners were not at home at the time and the rubble fell to the floor below rather than the street, which limited damage. The area was cordoned off for a time.

Better conditions RINCON de la Victoria has opened the application period for a new improved municipal employment scheme.

Councillor Yolanda Florido has announced that the new version of the scheme will provide more hours of work and higher salaries.

The measure has been taken in an attempt to meet families’ real needs.

School upgrades WORK is due to start at two Velez-Malaga schools, Andalucia and El Romeral, next month.

A €183,733 budget has been allocated for the work,

which will employ 90 people for six months to build a bigger canteen and resurface the infants’ playground at Andalucia school, and resurface sports tracks at El Romeral.

Storm damage forces closure of castle SALOBREÑA takes decision to ensure visitor safety

By Eleanor Hawkins THE local council has had to close down Salobreña’s Moorish castle due to the extent of damage caused by recent storms.

Although water has now drained from most of the parts that were flooded, they remain covered in mud; walls have fallen down and the visitors’ centre is still affected by flooding, municipal technicians reported.

The municipal heritage expert and engineers in charge of current restoration works informed the council that although most of the damage was minor, visitors’ safety could not be guaranteed until cleaning and repair work had been done.

This has led local Mayor Maria Eugenia Rufino to take the decision to close the castle to the public for now.

Although there is no set date for visits to resume, Rufino said she hoped it would be early next year.

By John Smith BORN in 1852 to a family of artisans in Tarragona whose ancestors had emigrated from France in the 17th century, Antoni Gaudí was a sickly child who suffered from rheumatism at an early age.

As he grew up, he trekked around Catalonia observing nature which was to influence his future development. A solitary figure who embraced vegetarianism and the catholic religion, he never married and it is said only ever showed any interest in just one woman, who did not reciprocate his feelings.

Good for homeowners, bad for banks RINCON DE LA VICTORIA Council has announced a number of changes to the local tax regulations for next year, which include tougher conditions for banks and large businesses.

Bank branches will be hit by

a 150 per cent increase on rates for cash machines, which will go from €400 to €1,000 per year, and 30 per cent increases on rubbish collection fees.

Meanwhile grants are planned to help residents with

low income meet their IBI property tax and other rates with discounts of up to 50 per cent available.

Economy and Treasury councillor Antonio Moreno explained formulae used to calcu-

late income to apply discounts on rubbish and sewage rates will also be changed, meaning more homes will be applicable.

Extra discounts and grants for retired or elderly homeowners, the unemployed and youths

will also be available.

Jobless people thinking of opening a new business are also in luck as the 50 per cent grants on opening licences are to be increased to 100 per cent if unemployed for three months.

NERJA’S Puente Viejo, one of the main accesses into the centre from the motorway, will remain closed for another week while repair work is done. The council is also considering resurfacing the road and putting speed bumps into place.

Tram service Regional support VELEZ-MALAGA’S plans to get its tram service up and running again as quickly as possible have the support of the Junta de Andalucia regional government, Malaga Province delegate Jose Luis Ruiz Espejo has announced.

HOTELIERS and workers across the region are breathing huge sighs of relief this week as the IMSERSO subsidised holiday programme for the elderly, which allows many hotels to stay open over the winter season, has finally been given the go-ahead after a series of worrying delays.

The programme, which this year is due to provide affordable holidays for almost one million retirees in Spain, had been tied up due to battles between rival travel companies wishing to obtain the two-year contract for the service.

IMSERSO: Subsidised holidays for the elderly keep many people in work over the quiet months.

However, approval was finally announced on Tuesday (October 27).

Now, retirees who had already expressed an interest in trips to coastal or inland areas will begin receiving letters with details of their options so they can make a decision and bookings can start.

Nationwide an estimated 91,800 jobs in the hotel and services sectors currently depend on the programme to survive the quiet winter season, meaning the news was received with much relief by many workers who had started to worry that they would be out of work during the winter season.

Salobreña residents to join march against violence in Madrid SALOBREÑA has pledged to join a State March Against Gender Violence which will take place in Madrid on November 7 and will be laying on a coach for locals to travel to the capital city for the event.

The Equality department has an-

nounced its support for the 7N march, organised by the Red Feminista (Feminist Network) which has called for all groups, associations and members of the general public to join in the State March.

In Spain 1,378 people have been

murdered by their partners since 1995, the network stated, 70 of them since the beginning of 2015.

Those wishing to join the march can sign up at the Equality Department offices at the Casa Roja until November 4 from 9am to 2pm.

Cucumber crisis firm absolved of blame GERMAN court rules in favour of producer

By Eleanor Hawkins A HAMBURG court has found in favour of an Axarquia co m p a n y wh i c h w as wrongly accused of being partly responsible for an E.coli i n t e st i n a l b a c teria outbreak in the German city which caused tens of deaths in May 2011.

Richard Soepenberg from Frunet, the Algarrobo company Hamburg health authorities pointed the finger at during the outbreak, explained that after four years of legal battles a judge has confirmed that it did nothing wrong and it was an error on the authorities’ part.

Soepenberg said the cooperative members were ecs tatic o v e r t h e n e ws, although t h e r e i s st i ll a

chance that the other party might appeal.

As of yet there is no news on the amount the company will receive in damages, although it had initially requested €2.3 million.

Yet Soepenberg declared c le a rin g th e c o mp a ny’s n ame is mo re imp o rta nt than money.

“Accusing a company in

this way can smash it apart in a second, and it can happen to any firm anywhere in the world.

“Luckily, we’ve managed to build it back up from zero and are back to where we were before this crisis, but at the time we lost almost all our customers and suppliers,” the commercial director said.

Meanwhile in Almuñecar the station at El Zahori registered 26.1 litres per square

So far this month the total amount of accumulated rainfall in the Almuñecar and La Herradura area has reached 161 litres per square metre.

In the under 10s category, Hector Sanchez de la Monja took first prize with a 1,056 gram total catch, followed by Miriam Gonzalez Martos with 936 grams and Francisco Padial Martin with 622 grams. Francisco also won the prize for the biggest single piece weighing in at 301 grams.

Meanwhile in the 11 to 14year-olds’ category the winner was Marta Lopez Gracia with a total catch of 603 grams followed

Biggest cruise-liner ever visits Motril port SHIP was welcomed to the area by various members of the local authorities

By Eleanor Hawkins MOTRIL was flooded with visitors on Thursday (October 22) when Holland America Lines’ 14-storey Nieuw Amsterdam, the biggest cruise-liner to ever dock in the port, stopped off for a visit.

The ship, carrying more than 3,000 people on-board, was welcomed to the area by various members of the local and port authorities and sugarcane juice was handed out to the newcomers to give them a taste of what they could find in the town.

While 15 coaches arrived to carry the more adventurous off for daytrips, mostly to the Alhambra in Granada, an estimated 1,500 passengers chose to stay in Motril and were treated to a flamenco show and invited to discover w hat th e t o u r i st o ff i c e an d Te a tro Calderon had to offer.

Local Tourism councillor Alicia Crespo stressed the importance of making this type of visitor feel at home: “The

More surveillance THE DGT traffic authority has launched a new surveillance campaign on secondary roads in Malaga Province.

Of the 22 people who have died on Malaga’s roads so far this year, 70 per cent did so in accidents on secondary roads, the DGT reported, which has led it to increase surveillance on this type of road.

Spot checks have been planned to test for alcohol and drugs, announced provincial DGT leader Trinidad Hernandez.

By Eleanor Hawkins THREE HUNDRED AND TWENTY schoolchildren from poor families in Velez Malaga are to receive batches of stationery for school thanks to La Caixa bank’s social fund and Malaga Provincial Council.

The campaign, which will provide bags of school supplies to an estimated 9,300 children across Malaga Province, has a €150,000 budget, and stationery is being purchased from local businesses to also help local commerce, La Caixa reported.

Social Services Councillor Zoila Martin received the goods from the bank’s area manager Guillermo Martin and local branch managers Francisco Ramos and Diego Gil. She explained that her department’s social workers would be distributing them

Working to foster peaceful relationships FOLLOWING the end of a busy summer season, local residents and business owners in Nerja attended a meeting called by the council to try to iron out problems and disagreements between the two groups.

Shop and restaurant owners, local residents, Public Street Occupation Councillor Mari Carmen Gonzalez Ortega, the Local Police chief and representatives from Nerja Business Association gathered to hammer out their differences, which mainly arise from the amount of commercial activity on Calles Pintada, La Gloria, Cristo and Hernando de Carabeo.

The councillor had announced that she wished to hear both sides’ opinions

first-hand after receiving a number of complaints, and said her department was studying ways to solve the problems without harming local commerce.

Issues discussed included delimitation of space on the streets used by businesses, which both parties a g r e e d w a s n e c e s s a r y, cleaning - as there have been many complaints about the state the streets remain in overnight after businesses close and before municipal cleaners arrive and the amount of noise coming from terraces.

All in all, Gonzalez Ortega reported after the meeting, things went very smoothly and both parties appeared eager to find acceptable solutions for the problems.

Farmers lament crop losses EMERGENCY repairs to a containing wall by the La Coronela stream in Carchuna, Motril, have been confirmed by the Environmental Department. However, the news is small consolation to farmers who lost their crops in recent heavy storms.

When a 30-metre stretch of the containing

wall collapsed during torrential storms on Tuesday October 20, farmers with greenhouses by the stream, which turned into a raging four-metre wide river, saw their livelihood washed away in moments. One farmer, Vicente Carrion, lost his entire crop and said he would need about €50,000 to repair his land.

Almuñecar has new home for fire brigade STATION has been built at the entrance to town and cost more than €800,000

By Eleanor Hawkins ALMUÑECAR’S fire brigade finally has a place to call home following completion of its new fire station.

Local and provincial authorities gathered at the new station to unveil an official plaque and declared the facility open at a ceremony on Monday (October 26).

The station, which cost more than €800,000, has been built on a 1,000 m2 plot by the N340 road, the entrance to town and with access to the regional road that connects Almuñecar with the Rio Verde area, which it also covers.

“Today sees the end of more than a decade of broken promises and firefighters going backwards and forwards

Black Friday is coming Safety first RINCON DE LA VICTORIA in collaboration with ACERV local business association has announced that it will be holding its first ever Black Friday on November 27.

Black Friday originated in the US and consists of a day when shops open for

longer and offer promotional sales on what is traditionally the first day of Christmas shopping for many people.

Small and medium sized local businesses are invited to take part in the initiative, which aims to boost commerce by promoting the day as an attraction with many ac-

tivities lined up alongside shopping.

Artists have been invited to take part in a competition to design posters to announce the event with a chance to win €200.

By Eleanor Hawkins WORK has started to improve parks in Salobreña, Lobres and La Caleta and bring them up to standard to ensure local youngsters are safe.

A total budget of €123,000 plus tax has been approved for work on three parks, which the council has announced will take up to one month to carry out.

Mayor Maria Eugenia Rufino explained that the project pays particular attention to safety and will be adapting and improving the spaces where children play to meet current safety regulations.

At La Fuente I park in Salobreña, the busiest of the

three, rubber matting will be put under apparatus, the swings replaced and play areas for children under and over four separated as they require different safety measures, the mayor explained.

Meanwhile at the Lobres park, explained Maintenance and Works councillor Javier Ortega, the current gravel surface will be replaced with one that meets safety regulations, swings will be replaced and the play area correctly delimited.

Finally the park in La Caleta will see the greatest changes, the councillor explained, as the playground will be moved to the area where the dance floor is.

Region ready for flu-jab campaign HEALTH centres are now offering the vaccination

AT RISK: Over-65s and those with heart or lung problems.

AS the chilly season starts and temperatures start to drop, the flu-jab campaign heats up as regional health departments spring into action with their respective vaccination campaigns.

Health centres throughout Andalucia are catching up with the rest of the country and beginning to give the jabs to the public on request. The reason for the slow start to the campaign in Malaga is due to the fact that the southern climate is a little more benign than those in other parts of Spain,

and therefore starts later than elsewhere.

People over 65, and those belonging to groups at particular risk - who are eligible for the health service - including those with heart or lung problems, and healthcare workers, can ask for an appointment directly at their health centre.

Organic waste facility ready for December

UNDER WAY: Work to finish the new composting plant.

By Declan Scanlan THE Provincial Solid Urban Waste Consortium’s composting plant at the Valsequillo environmental complex in Antequera could be up and running in December.

The plant will allow organic waste from the 89 municipalities within Malaga Province that

make up the consortium to be turned into compost (biostabilised residues) which will be appropriate for use as fertilizers for agriculture and gardening.

The new composting plant, built between 2013 and 2014 by Egmasa and financed entirely with European funds, cost €20 million and should provide between 80 and 100 jobs.

Cemeteries set for All Saints’ Day IN PREPARATION for All Saints’ Day (November 1),

a traditionally busy day for Spanish cemeteries, Salobreña Council’s Works and Services Department has been carrying out its usual maintenance and improvement jobs.

La Villa, Lobres and La Caleta cemeteries have all been given a general tidy-up and new coat of paint, and gardens and lighting in and around the areas given some TLC.

Thi s year, depar t m ent leader Javier Ortega reported, particular attention has been paid to street lighting in the cemetery surroundi ngs and under t he N340 bridge.

To accom m odat e t r adi tional visits to the cemeteries, they will remain open for longer than usual on October 31 and November 1 and the council will be running a special bus service.

Drones considered to monitor

PROTOTYPE on course to be deployed throughout Spain from next yea

By Declan Scanlan THE highway agency in Spain may have unmanned drones to patrol traffic and monitor roads ready to come into operation from next year.

The agency is developing the aircraft in conjunction with Sistemas y Montajes Industriales, a Spanish technology company. The drones are being built with the specific purpose of monitoring traffic on public highways.

Alberto de Laorden, the director of Sistemas, was at the seventh National Road Safety Congress in Valencia and he confirmed that the prototype is on course to be ready by next year.

Laorden addressed the congress about the advantages of the aircraft, saying: “Much cheaper than a helicopter and faster to deploy,

At the moment, however, the use of drones for general

road surveillance is against the law. Legislation demands that the operator keep the drone within sight which would make it impossible for the aircraft to be used to

track hundreds of kilometres of motorways.

Laorden also said that the benefits of the drones being developed reach beyond merely monitoring traffic.

THREE HUNDRED AND SIX homes in Velez-Malaga are to benefit from rehab work currently being carried out by the regional government to improve the communal areas of the buildings.

The work was ordered by the Andalucian Housing and Rehabilitation Department and includes roof repairs, improvements to lighting, expansion gaps, drainage and carpentry, repairs and painting tasks, Junta de Andalucia regional government delegate Jose Luis Ruiz Espejo explained during a recent visit to the area.

Altogether the work, which started in September and should be finished before the end of the year, has a €268,462 budget taken from Junta and Feder funds and will benefit 100 homes on Calle Primavera-Verano, 104 homes in Pueblo Nuevo and 102 on Cuesta del Visillo in Torre del Mar. During the first nine months of this year, explained Tourism delegate Francisco Javier Fernandez while announcing the re-

gion’s presence at the fair, there have been more than 39 million hotel stays in Andalucia, and promotional activities aim to strengthen the sector even more.

Eight Junta de Andalucia regional government departments will be represented on the region’s stand and 200 businesspeople travelling to the fair will be making use of 24 work stations to attend to British travel agents.

Along with professional meetings, Fernandez explained, there are also gastronomical and other events planned to attract members of the general public.

Bull-running without the bulls in Huercal-Overa SOME 500 children took part in the event which was held for the second time and is sure to be repeated A HIGH spot in Huercal-Overa’s recentlyconcluded town fiestas was the bull-running event for children.

There was no blood, no gore, no suffering or peril involved because neither were there any bulls.

Some 500 children took part in an ‘encierro’ that set out from the Plaza de la Constitucion, pursuing - and sometimes being pursued by - huge inflatable bulls.

This was the second time that this vegetarian version of bull running was held during the Huercal-Overa fiestas and is sure to be repeated next year, said mayor Domingo Fernadez.

A 54-YEAR-OLD worker installing awnings at a building located on Calle Sierra Dorada in Benidorm has died after falling from the 12th floor.

A tropical surprise for local walkers

JUNGLE TRAIL: Walkers felt like they were in Burma.

By Eleanor Hawkins A GROUP of walkers from Almuñecar were amazed last weekend to discover a tropical jewel tucked away almost under their noses, which they had no idea existed.

On the walk, one of a series organised by Almuñecar Sports Department, visitors were treated to sights of giant tropical trees, caves

and waterfalls which they later reported made them feel more like they were in a Burmese forest than just kilometres from their homes.

The next trip is planned for November 8 and will be covering a hilly hiking route in Alayos del Dilar, near Sierra Nevada. Those wishing to sign up can do so at the sports department offices at Francisco Bonet stadium.

EDF Energy has reached an agreement with China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) for a nuclear power plant at Hinkley Point, Somerset. It was confirmed at a news conference by Prime Minister David Cameron and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The mainly state-owned EDF said the final cost would be £18bn (€24.6bn). State-owned CGN will pay £6bn (€8.2bn) for one third of it.

Sir James Dyson, founder of the company said “Consumers purchasing these machines on the basis of their widely advertised stated AAAA rating are being misled.”

“Dyson has issued proceedings against Siemens in Germany and Belgium and Bosch in the Netherlands and France.”

So much so that some parents freak out if their little toddler boy picks up a doll or pushes a toy pram, or vice versa if their little girl happens to love playing with a train set or cars. These are ridiculous prejudices that we adults put on unassuming innocent children. And it really isn’t a healthy practice in this day and age.

The whole conversation got me thinking about a related issue. That of jobs - and how our pre-conceived and conditioned ideas of what a man’s job is and what a women’s job is actually do nothing but hinder personal progress and close doors on both men and women when it comes to job opportunities and making choices about a future profession.

MORE WOMEN: Being encouraged to work in the field of engineering.

Even to this day, some (silly) people will smirk at the idea of a man wanting to become a nurse, whereas a woman working in the field of engineering is a rare sighting. It is well documented that Stem (science, technology, engineering and maths) industries are not greatly populated by women. According to the Women’s Engineering Society in Britain, just 6 per cent of the engineering work-

force is female. And this has negative effects on the engineering industry.

For example, a successful bicycle manufacturing company in the UK says it wants to hire more females but struggles to find women engineers to employ. At the moment they have one in a team of 17 - something they are keen to change, as it makes no sense to have a workforce that is predominantly made up of men

catering for a consumer base made up of both sexes in equal parts.

Some women may not instinctively want to work in areas like engineering, and that’s fine, but we need to be more proactive in encouraging the women that might like to be engineers. This starts with education, and breaking down discriminatory ideals of what a girl’s job is and what a boy’s job is!

IMAGINE you receive an enquiry from a potential client. Beaming from ear to ear you arrive and prepare to set out your stall. With you are several former clients. This of course is not going to happen.

There is an excellent way to enlist customer goodwill. Simply turn up armed with customer testimonials. Sadly, unsolicited customer recommendations take time to gather. A satisfied client can show appreciation in several ways but rarely does it occur to them to set their thanks down in writing.

You can invite a client to recommend you in writing. However, a requested testimonial is worthless for good reasons. Although your client likes you and wishes you well he may be merely satisfied with work carried out. This does not imply he feels strongly enough about the quality of your work to compose a written recommendation.

Your request poses a dilemma for your buyer.

Does he cause offence by refusing you? If inclined towards setting down his thoughts, he might lack

the finesse to do so in a way that is both honest and helpful. For this reason the unsolicited testimonial is worth its weight in gold.

Occasionally clients anticipate your desire to use their note of satisfaction. They might head a tribute with ‘To whom it may concern’. If it does not, then you are on the horns of a dilemma; do you request permission to publish his recommendation or do you presume you can. If you request permission, which is granted, it can hardly be described as unsolicited. Therefore, it’s as bent as a dog’s back leg. You have no right to describe the tribute as unsolicited.

You are perfectly entitled to publish unless the client has specified that the tribute is for your eyes only. If you do presume the sender is happy for you to publish, there is a small risk that such was not their intention. As far as I can recall I caused offence only on one occasion. The solution is simple: apologise and remove the unsolicited tribute.

Most were extremely positive; a number truly mind-boggling and some disturbingly sad. I think it’s now a case of ‘nuff said’.

Something that truly made my blood boil was the report that the Scouts and Girl Guides had been banned from marching in a Remembrance Sunday parade, for ‘health and safety’ reasons. The organisation apparently made the decision in case the event was ‘disrupted by protest groups’! Oh? And who might they be, I wonder? I don’t think we have to look too far for the answer to that. When are we going to stop kowtowing to these people, who are hellbent on changing our whole heritage and culture? Ha! Don’t hold yer breath!

What a veritable feast of rugby we have experienced over the last few weeks! And what a refreshing change from the pontificating, minc-

The X factor (what I could watch of it) has to my reckoning hit an all-time low. Classic this week was their interpretation of one of Judge Nick Grimshaw’s statements, when he was referring to the number of seats he was allocated. ‘I wanted to have sex like everyone else,’ it stated. ‘So we had to bring somebody out!’

Headline of the week: ‘England treated my lad like a horse, nags Klopp’. Brilliant!

And the biggest revelation of the week. The meaning of Freddie Mercury’s mysterious lyrics for his Bohemian Rhapsody. Despite what they appeared to be, they were in fact a reference to his coming out, his misgivings, and an apology to his mum. Listen again. What a genius!

The geographical size of Russia excludes millions wishing to visit Europe from doing so.

As a direct consequence of treacherous EU leadership, future generations of Western Europeans, long after Merkel and her henchmen are departed, will carry the burden of their treachery.

There is uncertainty as to who coined this expression. May the unfortunate citizens of the EU now claim it their own?

Readers raise funds for charities WORKING in a busy newspaper office, not only do we see breaking news from around the world, much of it quite depressing, we also see local news coming in from the six areas we publish for.

What is very heartwarming is to see the number of people, many of them British although by no means all, who devote so much time to raising funds for charity.

There are charity shops, fundraising dinners, music events, bake offs, balloon launches, walks and even sponsored sky dives.

The range of causes is as diverse as the way in which money is raised, and apart from the animal support our expatriates are often associated with, every type of charity is represented especially, but not exclusively, those connected with ill health.

In the week this article is being written, we have seen fundraising events for the fight against Butterfly skin, cancer, injured ex-servicemen as well as leukaemia and homeless families, with Remembrance Day and poppy appeals still to come.

Considering world economy has been difficult since 2007, it is most heartwarming to see so many people care enough about those worse off than themselves that they spend so much time and money on supporting an incredibly wide range of charities.

We at Euro Weekly News try to do our bit by sponsoring some of the events and devoting as much space as we can to charity fundraisers.

It wasn’t unusual to find Tom’s wife all alone in a hotel room Re: Tom Jones FOLLOWING Leapy’s comments in EWN, I just have to write to confirm every word he says about Tom’s behaviour away from the public eye.

Before my retirement I worked as a legal secretary in London and became very good friends with a girl who worked part-time for my firm, but also worked part-time at a hotel in Mayfair - 47 Park Street. The same hotel where Tom Jones and his entourage, and wife Linda, would stay in a suite of rooms when he was performing in London. My friend would tell me that Linda would just be left there, alone, bored and with nothing to do whilst Tom carried on doing whatever he wanted. Linda was also a little agoraphobic and seemed shy and frightened to go out.

My friend felt so sorry for Linda and became very good friends with her over time and to cheer her up would go up to her room, tell her to dress up, and then my friend would pretend to take Linda out. She would take her arm and walk her along the corridors pointing out things like paintings as if they were going to an art gallery, or going out to tea (but would have it sent to her rooms), but all the time pretending they were out and about on the town.

Apparently Linda loved this and it really brought her out of herself. I doubt if Tom ever knew about their ‘outings’ or even cared!

So you see there are others out there who believe you, and others who should check their facts before they put pen to paper. It is good to have people in this world like you who have the courage to actually say what many of us think, myself for one. Keep writing your great articles and as always... keep the faith!

When I ‘retired’ in 1997, my wife and I decided to have a look at the wider world and drive right across Europe, to end up in Cyprus.

While there, we took the opportunity to look up a friend who was serving at RAF Akrotiri. We tried to visit him there, but were denied entry to the base ‘for security reasons’ despite our having UK passports and my establishing that I was ex-RAF. So we had to meet up with our friend at a (Greek) bar down the road at Zakaki.

Then, when we drove back to the UK, on arrival at the Greek border at Ipsala, we were told by the very aggressive officials that, notwithstanding our UK (thus EU) passports, we would not be admitted into Greece because our passports revealed that we had journeyed via the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

We were seen off, literally at gunpoint, and had to re-route via Bulgaria into Yugoslavia.

Happily in both countries we were made more than welcome.

So I now wonder how it is that hordes of people - mostly without passports or provenance of any sort can so easily be welcomed into Greece, and now Cyprus - the ‘UK’ part of it in particular?

Should we perhaps have rounded up a few hundred down-and-outs to accompany us, in order to secure admission, in both cases?

Lingering pain

This week, Doctor Luis Perez Belmonte replies to a reader’s questions on leg pains: Our reader (name supplied) wrote: Dear Doctor, I am a Belgian lady.

The day before leaving for Spain (September 24) I suffered from pain in my left leg and went to the Belgian doctor.

He gave me an anti-inflammatory injection and I had to take pills for one week.

Arriving in Spain after that week the pain had not gone.

I called Helicopteros Sanitarios. This doctor again gave me an injection and pills for one week.

After this week the pain still has not gone.

Would it be useful to see a chiropractor? Or is it better to make an appointment in a hospital for an x-ray of my spine and leg?

Can you give me some

advice?

The doctor replied: Dear patient: The symptoms you describe appear to point to sciatic pain which usually originates from a trapped nerve in the spine.

As you have followed treatment for a few weeks with no improvements you should go to a hospital for a spine x-ray and probably an MRI as well if you see no improvements after seeing a Trauma specialist.

You should also see a chiropractor or physiotherapist who can help you relieve tension in the affected area and significantly improve your symptoms.

Airports damage health A STUDY has found that living within six miles of an airport makes people more likely to suffer from asthma and heart problems. Researchers blame carbon monoxide for the effects, with the pollutant being pumped out at higher levels when planes are going along the runways at lower speeds.

The study at Colombia University and the University of California looked at the exposure close to the 12 biggest airports in California, USA, and found that hospital admissions for heart problems were 9 per cent higher for those living within six miles of an airport.

The General Council of Physiotherapist Schools of Spain (CGCFE) emphasises that the choice of pillow should be adapted to each individual in order to achieve better sleep.

President of CGCFE, Miguel Villafaina, recognises that most often people spend more time choosing a mattress but the pillow is just as important. “The right pillow can help improve posture and prevent injury,” he explained.

For those who sleep on their backs, the recommended height of pillows is 10-13cm, up to 15cm for those who sleep on their side and if sleeping on their stomach, up to 10cm.

Composer invited to UN 70th anniversary DARIO is well known for his compositions

By Eleanor Hawkins DUE to the quality of the work produced at Meeting Art Almuñecar 2015 last week, a display of the paintings and sculptures created by visiting and local artists will run until November 22, the council has announced.

The exhibition was launched at an event during which the local Culture and Tourism councillors met the artists, from 10 different countries, and congratulated them on their work.

Sponsored by Almuñecar Culture Depart-

ment with collaboration from the municipal tourism board and local businesses, the event consisted of a series of art workshops at the Casa de la Cultura which were also open to the public.

Plans are already under way to organise next year’s edition of the event, which the councillors invited this year’s participants to come back for.

The work created by the artists will be on display at the Casa de la Cultura until November 22 and can be visited Mondays to Saturdays from 10.30am to 1.30pm.

COMPOSER and friend of the Euro Weekly Dario Poli was honoured to be invited to The Hague over the weekend to attend the International Gala celebrating the 70 years anniversary of the founding of the UN. Dario was earlier invited to write a new music composition for The Peace and Justice Foundation, a newly established venture at The Hague. The new composition will be presented at an exclusive gala event in September 2016 and Dario took time out from writing and his other projects to attend The Peace Palace building at The Hague.

Upon his arrival he was driven from Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam to meet Florence Olara of the Hague Justice Portal who had issued the formal invitation to the UN event.

He was then introduced to a range of officials and personalities and heard several speeches during the memorable evening.

The 70th anniversary of the founding of the UN was marked around the world and Dario told us that he will be returning to The Hague again for further meetings as he continues to prepare the composition for the The Peace and Justice Foundation.

Women focus of flamenco THIS year, women and their part in the world of flamenco scene are the subject of the Rincon de la Victoria, Flamenco Capital event which will be running in the town from October 30 to November 4.

Organised by El Piyayo Flamenco Club in collaboration with the council, the event will

include six free shows starring artists including Amparo Heredia, Vanesa Fernandez and Luisa Fernandez along with popular dancers and guitarists, Culture councillor Alina Caravaca announced. “This year the club has dedicated the event to the influence of women in the world of flamenco,” Caravaca said.

Axarquia, a haven of peace MORE laid-back than the costas, the area still attracts its fair share of visitors

By John Smith AXARQUIA is the smallest area in Andalucia, said to be named after the Arabic phrase ‘Ash-sharquía’, meaning ‘the eastern region’. It extends along the coast and inland to the east of Malaga and its coastal towns are collectively known as the Costa del Sol Oriental.

The area was not initially discovered by the ‘expat invasion’ like the rest of the coast even though the area enjoys a marvellous climate, many beaches, picturesque inland villages, mountains and rivers. Development did follow later but the area is still to a great extent underpopulated and not overlyexploited.

Many people love to drive along what is known as the

Route of the Sun and Avocado and simply enjoy the tran-

quil view of well-tended agricultural land.

This doesn’t mean that the area is not one to visit, but rather that it is a little sleepy and laid-back with much less of the brash commercialism of some of the resorts on the costas.

Although all parts are attractive and have their positive points, the main towns which attract the most visitors as well as purchasers of both retirement and holiday properties are, in alphabetical order: La Herradura (Horseshoe) is a pretty village overlooking a horseshoe-shaped bay which has a somewhat pebbly beach but excellent watersports’ facilities. Scubadiving is a great draw because of the crystal clear water.

Just 12 kilometres east of Nerja and linked by the coastal motorway, La Herradura enjoys a sub-tropical climate and with all the necessary shops including an indoor market, this is an enjoyable town to be in.

Nerja, which offers a combination of antiquity, architecture and beaches with its most favourite attraction being the caves, containing paintings which are over 20,000 years old, and other pre-historic remains. There are plenty of good restaurants, cafes and bars as well as 16 kilometres of beaches.

TOURIST ATTRACTION: Nerja Caves. fers many places of interest, including more prehistoric caves, sandy beaches, good dining, golf and Bezmiliana Castle, a fortress built in the 18th century by King Charles III. Torre del Mar is a pleasant seaside town which used to have many defensive towers and is one of the main resorts of Axarquia. One of its particular features is the esplanade which follows the coast to the marina of Caleta de Vélez, which has over 200 berths and offers sailing and a variety of other watersports.

Torrox, divides into two, part inland and part by the sea. Torrox Village is about four kilometres inland with whitewashed houses situated on a steep slope on which the town is built.

Torrox Costa is a popular coastal strip, particularly with holidaymakers who flock here during the summer.

Velez-Malaga, capital of

and largest city in Axarquia, is just 50 kilometres from Malaga airport and is of Arab origin.

With its historic background, relatively compact size and small population, the city is becoming increasingly popular with foreign visitors.

It would be wrong to ignore the fact that the area has suffered in the past with improper building, resulting in council imposed demolition, but recently the government has passed new laws to protect existing residents.

Any buyer in this area may benefit from the backlash as far as prices are concerned and it is not unreasonable to expect prices to increase as confidence returns to this particular market.

There are good lawyers in the area with knowledge of English and local conditions, and any prudent purchaser would be well advised to ensure that they have good professional help before committing to buy.

By Eleanor Hawkins DOES Spain have the cheapest mortgages in Europe? The number of foreclosures and evictions seen during the recession would seem to prove otherwise, yet Bankia claims it to be so.

Bankia bank spokesman Jose Sevilla reported that Spain has since 2009 been the European country where homeowners pay the lowest amounts for their mortgage loans and these low prices have forced banks and moneylenders to rethink their strategies to increase their profits.

In this respect, Sevilla declared that the price of credit is falling both for companies and for private owners, forcing banks to lower their differentials.

The bank has, over the first nine months of this year, lent a

Plants for free WAYS to get plants without paying Dick Handscombe

Gardening Corner

By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.

LAST week we looked largely at where one can buy plants with an initial look at how plants can be obtained for free.

That concept is expanded on in this week’s column.

For simplicity of text we include small plants, shrubs and trees in the term ‘plants’.

In practice free sources include the following: Seeds dropped by birds.

From the day we took over our piece of mountainside we adopted and nurtured many plants that have grown up

where birds or strong winds had dropped their self-fertilized seeds. Sometimes they were dug up and moved to a more convenient area but in general they were left where they happened to be as they had often started to put down strong natural root systems.

Self seeded from existing plants.

Among those plants that regularly self seed are freesias, hollyhocks, alyssum, laurel, and lavender.

Self seeded along the roadside.

Unmade earth pavements, especially with road edging blocks that cause water to be retained after rain, can be a good harvesting area. Look out

for saplings growing under overhanging trees. Propagation from cuttings.

Cuttings can be taken and successfully rooted at almost anytime of the year in Spanish gardens. The most productive time is during the winter/early spring cutback.

Splitting of perennials.

Many perennials such as leonotis, sages, succulents and gazanias can be easily split.

Splitting of clumps of bulbs, corms and rhizomes.

Every few years dig up and split established clumps of daffodils, crocuses, lilies, irises, agapanthus and monbretia.

Splitting or taking cuttings from oversized plants

CUTTINGS: Can be swapped with friends and neighbours. purchased from garden centres.

Sometimes the potted plants purchased from garden centres are too large for convenient planting out in the garden.

Collection of seed and sowing.

Try collecting ripe seed heads

or pods of marigolds, poppies, and the Devils tongue tree. And in the vegetable plot seeds such as peas, onions, garlic and leeks are easy to collect and store.

Overhanging branches.

Often the branches of one’s neighbours flowering trees and climbers can be trained to add interesting touches to one’s

boundary screens.

Swaps with friends and neighbours.
