The young Palma entrepreneur won the prestigious award because of his mo-

bile app, named Plaiout, which is designed to promote Palma through the use of games and to also help in promoting small businesses, according to the Santander International Entrepreneurship Centre A total of 43 young entrepreneurs from all over Spain will spend from October 29 to November 4 in Silicon Valley,

USA, visiting companies like Google, Facebook and Hewlett Packard and they will also visit Berkeley and Stanford Universities.

Mayor JosĂŠ Hila thanked a range of organisations including Banco Santander, the university, trainers and technicians at PalmaActiva - of which YUZZ is a part - for their support.

Seatbelts are not being worn FIFTY-TWO people were reported by Local Police in Palma in just five days for not wearing seatbelts. Police stopped 867 vehicles, and found 37 drivers, seven

front-seat passengers and eight back-seat passengers were not wearing seatbelts.

A driver was also reported for having an infant in the car without a child seat.

Flamingo dies A YOUNG flamingo died after sustaining serious injuries when it flew into an electric cable in the Maristany area of Alcudia.

It was found in the water with a broken wing and an injury to its side. It was taken to a shelter and treated by a vet but did not survive.

Roman rocks stolen ONE of the dry walls on the Pollentia road to the Roman Theatre has had to be restored urgently as rocks have been stolen from it.

It is in a poorly lit area with no surveillance. This is not the first time rocks have been stolen despite access to the area being restricted.

20 year anniversary for SOS Animal AIM to carry out campaigns to raise awareness of caring for animals THE SOS Animal Foundation in Calvia organised an event to mark its 20th anniversary and raise funds.

The deputy mayor, Antonio Garcia, gave them a plaque in recognition for the work they have carried out with the town hall, and the councillor for Commerce and the Environment, Paquita Mu単oz, was a judge in the pet competition.

Non-profit association SOS Animal was founded in 1995 and is currently located in Calvia. Since 1998 they have worked in collaboration with Calvia Town Hall which has allowed them to save most of the animals taken to the local pound and in 2008, the town hall provided the association with land for its facilities, which they hope to enlarge.

By John Smith WHAT was supposed to be a simple election for the local parliament in Catalonia appeared in reality to be a massive test for the Spanish government.

With a population of 5.5 million voters, the election held on September 27 could have far-reaching effects on Spain itself.

The pro-independence parties have won 72 seats out of 135 and although they only received 1.9 million votes out of the four million cast, they consider that this gives them a mandate to declare independence from Spain.

dependence through the courts and the EU has indicated that Catalonia would not be granted immediate membership, would have to leave the Eurozone and would have to apply for membership of Schengen.

The pro-independence response is that within 18 months, Catalonia will be ready to declare independence and have the entire necessary infrastructure in place.

It does seem a pipe-dream but the Spanish elections have to be held by the end of 2015 and it is a brave government that completely ignores so many votes which could easily be lost if it becomes too belligerent.

NOW that the election has been resolved the pro-independence parties seem to be ready to compromise by opting for statehood which would allow Catalonia’s inclusion in a Spanish federal framework.

BOOMING: Businesses are now looking for a spectacular Christmas.

THE Association of Large Commercial Areas in the Balearic Islands has said that this summer they have earned much more than in the summer of 2014.

Their spokesman, Francisco Garcia, has said that the summer was ‘spectacular’ and this was supported by the President of the Association of Traditional Commerce in Jaume II, Pedro Mesquida.

Businesses on the islands hope to end this year with rises of 5 per cent as the Christmas season is also expected to be very positive. Business associations say that this year has seen a ‘reactivation’ of the economy as locals have regained confidence in the financial situation and the tourist season was better than ever.

Another thing on which business asso-

ciations have commented is that the recovery of the local economy is reaching all areas of the commercial sector, even those inland, albeit with less intensity than for businesses in tourist areas.

Last year, figures also improved, so associations remark that now there have been two years running of positive figures.

Palma Airport delays due to strikes RECENT Air Traffic Controllers’ strikes in Spain are causing up to 21 per cent of current delays at airports in Europe, according to Euro-

control.

They are striking to demand the cancellation of disciplinary measures for 62 controllers in Barcelona and

Santiago de Compostela who took part in the closure of air space throughout Spain in 2010.

The delays at Son Sant

Joan Airport in Palma de Mallorca were of between 30 and 45 minutes on average.

The worst delays were registered in Barcelona.

On trial for insulting former President Bauza COUPLE identified by CCTV

TARGET: Former President Bauza’s and his pharmacy in Marratxi.

A MAN, 20, and a woman, 36, are on trial for allegedly spray-painting insults against former regional President Jose Ramon Bauza outside his pharmacy in Marratxi. They both deny the charges.

The events took place between November 2012 and June 2014, and started with eggs being thrown at the façade of the building. The phrase ‘Bauza Nazi, murderer, PP Nazis get out’ were sprayed on the entrance.

Tapes from the pharmacy’s CCTV camera were handed over to the Guardia Civil, who managed to identify the culprits through a car which belongs to one of them as well as the distinctive hairstyle of a man seen with the woman in photos posted on a social networking site. The faces of the culprits were covered.

The defendants are also accused of dumping rubbish outside the pharmacy, but deny all charges although their phones place them in the area on the dates on which the acts of vandalism were carried out.

The public prosecutor is asking for each of them to be fined almost €5,000 for slander amongst other crimes.

€10 million from Ironman ALCUDIA Town Hall will request a report on the financial impact of the Ironman triathlon held in the town recently.

The event, organised

by Thomas Cook, is estimated to have brought around €10 million to the area.

The director of the triathlon, David Thompson, explained that 2,500 athletes of 57 nationalities took part this year and each one was accompanied by an average of 2.3 relatives, who stay for 10 days on average in Pollença, Alcudia, Muro and Can Picafort.

They normally stay in four-star hotels and spend around €100 per person per day.

Street artists feel harassed in Palma STREET artists in Palma are demanding a law be scrapped so they can perform in public.

The law was approved by the former Partido Popular (PP) government which those now in office had promised to do away with. However, street artists complain that this hasn’t

happened and the Manifestart group made their demands coinciding with the presentation of the World Street Art Week, launched in Argentina. The group has brought it to Palma for the first time and say they are harassed by police and denied licences to perform.

Father on abuse charges A MAN, 34, is facing four years in prison for allegedly sexually abusing his daughter, 11. The events took place in September 2013 in the early hours of the morning. The man was caught by his wife touching the girl inappropriately. He confessed to the Guardia Civil.

Car dealerships caught cheating!

BUYERS could be in with a chance to claim money back

By Eleanor Hawkins HAVE you bought a new car in Spain between 2006 and 2013? You may be in with a chance to get some of your hard-earned cash back as the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) has found 147 dealerships guilty of overcharging buyers.

The dealerships, selling well-known brands including Opel, Toyota, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Land Rover, Citroen, Mitsubishi, BMW, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Ford, Honda, Kia, Mazda, Mercedes, Nissan, Peugeot, Porsche, Renault, Volvo and Lexus vehicles, have been fined more than €170 million by the CNMC but have kept quiet about the fact that buyers may be eligible to claim damages.

According to OCU consumers’ association, those who bought cars from the 147 dealers missed out on discounts due to price-pacts which went directly against consumer rights and free competition, and they can take their case to court and demand between €750 and €1,500 in damages.

OVERCHARGING: Car dealerships failed to pass on discounts that were available to customers.

Holiday hold-up AN Algerian tourist, 30, was arrested in Palma for allegedly attempting to commit a hold-up during his holidays.

He and a Sahrawi man, 19, allegedly approached a woman in Son Hugo car park and demanded the keys to her car,

telling her they had a gun.

However, they fled the scene in a rented car which was in the name of a woman staying in a hotel in Can Picafort. Her husband had taken the vehicle to Palma to commit the robbery.

In an unrelated incident, two men, aged 36 and 40, were arrested for their alleged involvement with eight robberies committed in shops in the centre of Palma throughout September.

Both detainees have extensive criminal records and one has been remanded in prison.

The investigation remains open.

Highest rate of convicted minors THE Balearic Islands is the Spanish region with the highest rate of convicted minors, with 13.1 per 1,000 inhabitants between 14 and 17 years old.

There were 550 minors sentenced in 2014 according to the National Institute of Statistics.

It also has the highest level of criminal offences per 1,000 inhabitants between 14 and 17.

â‚Ź1,000 raised for MacMillan Nurses COFFEE morning was held to raise funds THE Calanova Cancer Care Charity Shop hosted a coffee morning to join the worldwide MacMillan Coffee Morning to raise money for the MacMillan nurses.

Weather was good last Friday for the event at the Agua Beach Hotel overlooking the sea in Palmanova. The owner Toni Neira and his son Cristopher had, as in previ-

ous years, offered the main terrace of the hotel for the event and the staff served people plenty of hot coffee with a smile as well as the cakes which had been baked and donated.

People forgot about the calories and all that mattered was seeing old friends and making new ones. The event was well-attended and Liam

gave his time to sing.

The organisers report that the morning was a great success and that there was a very happy atmosphere.

The total amount raised for the MacMillan nurses was â‚Ź1,000 and the organisers thank everyone who made the event possible by helping, donating, organising and attending.

Cyclists in Calle Oms RESIDENTS and business owners in Calle Oms, Palma, complain that cyclists use the pedestrian street every day and that the police do nothing to stop them.

They say that at least 100 cyclists can be

seen on the street every day despite them being banned and some of them endanger pedestrians and show uncivil behaviour.

Recently, a waitress was knocked down by a cyclist.

BELT UP: Failure to meet the new regulations will result in fines and loss of points.

No children on front seats AS of Thursday October 1 children under 1.35 metres in height are banned from travelling in front seats of cars in Spain as changes to the General Traffic Regulations come into effect.

The new measure comes in addition, and under no circumstances replaces, regulations already in place regarding child restraining systems. Failure to meet these regulations, the DGT traffic authority reminds drivers, can result in â‚Ź200 fines and loss of licence

points apart from the evident danger it puts youngsters in.

The new version of Article 117, which came into effect on October 1, includes three exceptional cases in which children can be carried in the front seat, always using restraining systems that are right for their weight and height: if there is no back seat, it is already used by smaller or similar children or it is impossible to correctly fit a restraining system there.

DISCUSSIONS: Between the mayor of Calvia and the President of the RANA Foundation.

Calvia to fight child abuse COUNCIL will meet with local schools to discuss how to proceed THE mayor of Calvia, Alfonso Rodriguez, met with Elizabeth Homberg, the President of the RANA Foundation against child abuse.

They discussed methods of collaboration between the council and the foundation so that the departments of Edu-

cation and Social Services can programme activities to educate children and parents regarding physical and sexual abuse.

The council will meet with local schools to discuss how to proceed and will assume the costs of the pro-

gramme.

The non-profit foundation aims to prevent abuse towards children and carries out the ÂĄGrita muy Fuerte! (Shout Very Loud!) Programme which teaches them to identify abuse and how to react against it.

Trial for trying to kill policeman A MAN, 38, is facing nine years in prison for allegedly attempting to kill a Local Police officer in Palma.

The events took place in the early hours of April 21, 2013 when a group of friends started a fight in a bar, annoying other clients.

The owner called the Local Police and when they arrived the accused became aggressive with the officers, who asked them to step outside. He then punched one of

them hard, breaking bones in his neck and leaving him unable to breathe. The injuries could have killed him.

He was initially taken to the mutual insurance company where he was given painkillers, but several hours later, he went to Son Espases Hospital where he was admitted in a serious condition.

His recovery took two months and he is still considered unfit for work. He has difficulty swallowing and

had to go to a speech therapist.

The accused is charged with attempted manslaughter and attacking an officer.

Three of his friends are also on trial for attempting to prevent his arrest.

The prosecution is asking for â‚Ź3,000 in compensation.

The private accusation is asking for 11 years in prison for the man who learned self-defence techniques when he was previously in prison.

Pending justice for harassed wife A MAN, 43, is to stand trial for repeatedly harassing his ex-wife in Palma in October and November 2012.

The public prosecution explains that he did not accept the separation she had proposed and wanted to control all aspects of her life. He allegedly called her at work, visited her home accusing her of cheating on him with other men

and blamed her for the failure of their marriage in front of their children, as well as threatening her.

He also tried to discredit her at work and amongst her university teachers. He hacked her e-mail account and sent e-mails in her name.

The public prosecutor is asking for three years in prison and a restraining order against him.

Medicine studies start next term SOME 60 students are expected to begin studying medicine at the Balearic Islands University next term.

The agreement between the university and the Departments of Health and Education is yet to be signed, but the dean Llorenç Huguet has confirmed that after paying fees of around €1,500 classes will start with six teachers at a cost of €600,000 for the region.

Hotel plans on track WORK on the new Park Hyatt de Canyamel in the mountains of Capdepera is progressing well and should be able to open next spring.

The hotel complex, made to look like a traditional town will have 142 rooms for 284 guests.

By Steve Walsh THE mayor of Calvia, Alfonso Rodriguez, met with the British vice-consuls for the Balearic Islands and Mallorca, Gillian Brion, and Elaine Brannan respectively.

They discussed several matters of current interest and

focused on extended relations between the town hall and the consulate, given the importance of British tourism in Calvia. There are also around 9,000 Britons living in the town all year round.

They evaluated the summer season and how tourism has evolved in the area. The vice-

consuls commented that conflictive situations had fallen this summer compared to other years. The meeting was also attended by the councillor for Sport, Youth and Foreign Residents, Eva Serra, and the person in charge of foreign residents in the town, Dolina Reynolds.

Not enough military personnel for visits ALCUDIA facility is unable to allow civilians to enter

TROOPS: Unit should be able to allow access to up to 50 civilians per day.

THE Defence Ministry has said that there is not enough personnel to allow civilians to visit the Cap de Pinar military facilities in Alcudia.

The mayor, Antoni Mir, explained that he had met with the person in charge of the Palma 47 Unit, who told him that they are

available to the town to authorise visits for small groups. In 2011 it was agreed by the Ministry, the Environmental Department and the town hall and approved by the regional government that up to 50 civilians per day could access the area. Visits can be organised via the town hall.

Woman hurt after falling three metres A WOMAN in her 30s was injured after falling from a height of approximately three metres in Magaluf.

She was taken to Son Espases Hospital with slight head injuries after being treated at the scene by paramedics.

A Swedish tourist in her 40s was also taken to Son Espases after falling off a Segway on Palma seafront promenade and sustaining injuries to her head and back. She was attended by Port Police until paramedics arrived.

An English tourist, 72, was taken to Muro Hospital after almost drowning off Formentor Beach. She was found by lifeguards floating unconscious in the sea. They took her to shore, performed first aid and gave her oxygen. She regained consciousness before being taken to hospital. Guardia Civil and Local Police attended the scene.

Mystery of human remains HUMAN remains found at the beginning of August on El Coto Beach in Colonia de Sant Jordi, belong to two different people.

A skull was found some 20 metres from the breakwater near a boat in a popular area about five metres deep. After they were alerted, Guardia Civil divers combed the area for two hours, finding only a jaw bone

with a few teeth. It is believed it may have been removed by another diver, but the one who found it had taken a photo which was handed over to the officers.

This led them to find that the jaw bone would not have fitted with the skull which is believed to have belonged to a man. The jaw bone is thought to be a woman’s.

Rescue teams attend accidents A WOMAN, 55, was rescued

by Guardia Civil and firemen after falling and sustaining head and face injuries when coming down ses Voltes del Galileu. She was face-down and unconscious when the emergency services arrived

and was airlifted to Son Espases Hospital in a serious condition. To reach her, the helicopter had to land in the car park of a private property.

Earlier the same day, on the Puig de Massanella, a man, 54, had to be rescued after

sustaining a knee injury and was airlifted to Inca Hospital.

A woman, 61, was taken to Son Espases with back injuries after falling into the sea from a height of approximately 20 metres at Cala Falco, Calvia.

Chelsea Greene, Alhaurin El Grande’s pop queen!

ARLIER this year, Chelsea Greene left home in Alhaurin El Grande, Malaga, and embarked on a journey to the UK to a nationwide audition for a new girlband.

Office Girls UK was being promoted by Ellis Rich, OBE, the former boss of Simon Cowell, who previously owned the biggest music publisher company in Europe. His partner, Marvin Howell, had promoted the likes of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Blondie, Lady Gaga, Celine Dion, and Enrique Iglesias, so she knew this could be her big opportunity.

The management stated that Chelsea was great but they could not

EWN EXCLUSIVE take her on as they had already chosen the girls for the band. Chelsea was very disappointed; nevertheless, when she returned to Spain, she was offered a leading role in a musical revue with Medplaya Hotels in Spain, which she accepted.

Fate soon took a hand, however, when Chelsea then received an email from Rich and Howell telling her that one of the girls had left and could she fly back immediately to the UK and replace her. She was released from her commitments in Spain and made her way back to the UK to await her destiny.

Within two days of joining the Office Girls UK, they were performing at the YouTube Con-

vention at London’s ExCel Centre, promoting their recently released single, Dirty Work.

The response was unbelievable and within days they had 25,000 views. They continued the promotion with flashmobs at Liverpool Street Station, Compton Street, Carnaby Street and the Notting Hill Carnival. They were going from strength to strength.

Unfortunately, the girls’ social media accounts were blocked, which the police said was a ‘hate crime’. This resulted in the band losing all followers on YouTube, including big celebrity names such as Perez Hilton, Labyrinth and Alan Carr.

Bees close Cala Millor beach for few hours PART of Cala Millor Beach had to be closed to the public for several hours on Sunday after a swarm of bees was detected in the area.

They gathered around a sunshade and the lifeguard on duty informed the Local Police and Son Servera Council. The firemen were brought in, as well as a bee keeper.

Police cordoned off the area until the hive was removed.

Man, 39, dies in traffic accident as car hits wall SO far this year 36 people have died in road traffic accidents in the Balearics A MAN, 39, died after his car hit a wall in Inca, on the road to Binissalem.

Paramedics who attended the scene were unable to save him although he was alive but unconscious when firemen extracted him from his vehicle.

He has been identified as teacher Miquel Albero Maestre.

No other vehicles were involved and Guardia Civil believe he fell asleep at the wheel and lost control of the vehicle, which left the road and crashed into the wall.

So far this year, 36 people have died in road traffic accidents in the Balearic Islands.

In a separate incident, six vehicles were involved in a pileup on the Inca road, near Alcampo. Two people were injured and several others had to be treated for anxiety attacks.

He was taken to Son Espases Hospital.

Three young women were taken to hospital with slight injuries following a crash involving two vehicles near the Estadio Balear when one went to make a right turn on the Via de Cintura carving up the other.

Are You Ready For The New Automatic Exchange Of Information?

We are about to enter a new era for international tax planning and cross border wealth management.

January 2016 sees the start of a new global automatic exchange of information regime that affects everyone who has financial assets outside their country of residence. Financial privacy is dead and buried, to the point where your local tax authority will passively receive information about your investment assets without having to ask for it.

Everyone should be aware of what information will be shared about their income and assets, and consider what tax and estate planning arrangements are best suited for them and their family, for today and the long-term.

The current situation There has been some automatic exchange of information in Europe since 2005, under the EU Savings Tax Directive, but it only applies to interest income. The Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey started off by offering a withholding tax option, but have now moved to automatic exchange of information only. Third countries Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Monaco,

By Peter Worthington, Senior Partner, Blevins Franks Andorra and San Marino implement the directive by applying the withholding tax on savings income, thereby maintaining banking secrecy.

Many countries and offshore centres around the world have signed bi-lateral tax information exchange agreements. These, however, are of limited benefit to tax authorities.

They can only receive information on a taxpayer’s offshore accounts and investments if they ask for it, and to do that they need to have solid suspicions of tax evasion. If they are

not aware of an account, they will not receive any information on it.

The situation from January In July 2014 the council of the Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) approved a new standard for the Automatic Exchange of Financial Information in Tax Matters. It comprises the Competent Authority Agreement and the Common Reporting Standard (CRS), and goes live on 1st January 2016.

This new regime involves the systematic and periodic transmission of taxpayer information by the source country to the residence country concerning various categories of income - it goes much further than just interest income.

This means that tax authorities will automatically receive information on all the financial assets their taxpayers own overseas - without having to ask for it.

So the Spanish tax authority will receive information on every resident of Spain, regardless of whether they have been fully compliant and declaring everything correctly, or hiding assets offshore.

It will receive information about offshore accounts and investments they may not have been aware of before. So any cases of tax evasion, whether on the investment return or underlying capital sum, will come to light, even if there were no suspicions previously.

The OECD warned this summer that transgressors have a “last window of opportunity” to disclose previously hidden assets and income.

Local tax authorities will compare data received against tax returns, and where they find discrepancies have good reason to launch a tax audit.

This could result in the taxpayer having to pay previously unpaid tax, plus interest, plus penalties. In some

cases they could face criminal prosecution.

Over recent years, the Spanish government has stepped up its efforts to detect tax evasion and collect unpaid taxes. This new global exchange of information will be an invaluable tool for the tax authorities.

It will help them not only compare data with tax returns, but also with Form 720 where residents have to declare their overseas assets. The penalties for undeclared assets can be costly, so it is important that you declare everything correctly.

THE Guardia Civil arrested four men for defrauding elderly residents in Calpe, Alicante.

The Guardia were informed of the four men who posed as gas technicians and wore official gas company uniforms after they had visited an elderly German couple in Calpe, who did not speak much Castellano and convinced them that their gas installation should be checked.

They then falsely told the couple they must change a number of components in order to comply with regulations and gave them a €660 bill which was paid in full by the couple.

Police found although the installation was actually made correctly there was in fact no need for it. After providing police with a description of the men who were said to be aged between 40-56 and of Spanish nationality, the Guardia picked them up in the street, still wearing the gas company uniforms. The four have already been sent to court charged with fraud.

Restoration begins of local heritage THE mechanism was damaged by a fire in 2013 CLEANING work is due to be carried out on the old public washing area in Calle Isabel II in Soller. It has become a meeting point for youths who have left it full of rubbish and graffiti. The town hall complains that it also smells of urine and that

fires have been lit inside which have damaged the walls.

Meanwhile, the Mallorca Government has begun restoration work on the water mill on the Coll d’en Rabassa roundabout, which is due to cost €56,682.

Built in the early 20th century, the mechanism was damaged in a fire in 2013 and will be repaired by members of the Historical-Industrial Heritage workshop in Son Bonet, Marratxi. The structure is also being restored by company Refoart.

Patient steals woman’s handbag in hospital A MAN, 40, and a woman, 38, both gypsies, were arrested by National Police for stealing items from patients in Son Llatzer Hospital.

A woman told security guards at the hospital that she had seen a man leaving her room and then found her handbag, containing €250 and a gold chain was missing.

They called police and after the victim gave them a description; the officers combed the hospital until they found the man, who was also a patient, and his wife. She was carrying a mobile phone which was reported stolen by another patient. The man was taken to Son Espases to a module for detained patients.

BUSINESS breakfasts were a novelty to me when first invited (or else) to one such in Shrewsbury. I had taken up a sales post with the Australian-based Red Telephone Company, which was very much performance related.

The basic concept was that during breakfast everyone at the table would be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed; fail. Of fresh mind, we sales personnel could bond, brainstorm, learn from others then hit the ground running. That was the idea. Sales seminars and such get-togethers do pay dividends.

Winging it, there is no one to turn to for advice except gestors, solicitors, suppliers and, equally inept, the family. As a consequence the SME manager is going to get it wrong more often than is the company man. He has

Business networking works well in the UK; there is no reason why it shouldn’t do so here, if you want it to.

OTHERS THINK IT I THINK many Saudis are like spoilt children with too much pocket money. They manufacture absolutely zilch and produce nothing but a substance that lies under their desert wastelands. They consider themselves favourites of Allah for having been bestowed this natural, and extremely lucrative, natural resource.

Having spent some eight years in their country, I think I can attest to their arrogance and hypocrisy. It came as no surprise to me that they completely blanked refugees fleeing from persecution in neighbouring countries; heaven forbid they allow their privileged existence to be overrun by smelly peasants!

It was also completely typical that they instead offered to pay for 200 new mosques to be erected in Germany. They also lie about or suppress anything that may be detrimental to their superior existence. When I was in the country, there was an attempted coup by one of the royal family. took at least 100 tanks and mobilised guns.

What little information did escape was quickly dismissed as a ‘military exercise’.

When slavery was supposedly brought to an end, with a great flourish of ‘generosity’, they built them all a town out in the desert. What they really wanted was them all in one place.

Not long after, they allegedly sent in fighter planes and bombed it out of existence.

On another occasion there was an attempted takeover of Mecca by a rival religious group.

This was put down to a handful of zealots. In fact, it took two weeks to quell, and a doctor friend of mine told me that his military hospital had treated at least 600 gunshot victims.

Despite demanding mosques to be built everywhere, they would never allow anything even vaguely resembling a church to be built in their kingdom. If they say some 700 souls perished this week on the road to Medina, you can guarantee the figure was probably double.

No, it would appear that the Saudis are living proof that in this world, money can buy just about anything.

Where was mainstream media, supposedly the impartial eyes and ears of their European readers? Perhaps too busy following orders from the politically elite as were their counterparts in the former Soviet Bloc.

No one listened. Instead, the West launched a military intervention to oust Gaddafi. The country is torn apart by rival factions as NATO invaded Iraq, Afghanistan and possibly soon Syria. It is not a failure of understanding as some claim; it appears to be the base treachery of Europe for which there will doubtless be a high price to pay.

THE Rugby World Cup is under way and it is refreshing to see a game that still embodies the real meaning of sportsmanship.

True, the players spend 80 minutes knocking seven bells out of each other, but generally there is no malicious intent displayed, only the desire to do whatever it takes to achieve a favourable result, with disappointed losers congratulating their opponents and the victors applauding the opposition off the pitch.

Broken noses and fractured fingers are no obstacle either, with injured parties receiving rapid on-site attention from the medics before continuing on with the game. Blood is the most common bodily fluid on a rugby pitch, not the snot and phlegm prevalent in a football match.

White is not always right WE in the newspaper industry can sometimes be accused of being a little stuck in our ways, but at Euro Weekly News, we not only care about our readers and advertisers but also about the environment.

All of the paper that we purchase - and if you think of the amount needed to produce six editions every week of every year - is ecologically sound, coming from reclaimed sources which is the reason that the background is not pure white.

That’s why we can say quite clearly that in the newspaper business, white isn’t right and if you see any publication printed on pure white paper, then you need to consider whether they are interested in the environment or if they just have money to burn (which also causes pollution).

The fact is that the use of paper in all forms does cause an enormous strain on our dwindling resources and unless you are one of those companies that plants three trees for every one cut down, the logical and indeed obvious thing to do is to re-use pulped paper.

It may not be quite as pretty to look at, but it certainly gives us a sense of doing our bit for the world and perhaps allows the rainforests to remain just a little longer.

Family Matters MONTHS of planning go into Mallorca’s Biggest Coffee Morning at Mood Beach. Funnily enough the whole process normally starts with a coffee between myself and Edward Ingram from the 41 Club. Edward works hard to make sure the event has all of the elements that it takes to be successful whilst remaining cheerful and calm, not always so easy in my opinion!

There’s an army of cake bakers (many of them the long suffering wives of the members of the 41 Club and members of the church congregation) that emerge for the day and present themselves and their cakes at Mood first thing in the morning.

Some of their cakes they insist are emphatically NOT to be entered into the competition, perhaps the baker is shy, but I always think that every single cake is worthy of a prize. Chocolate, fruit, spice, buns, fairy cakes, you

name it and it arrives hot from the oven of a dedicated cook. Congratulations to Sylvia Moneypenny who had the Best Fruit Cake and won a Majorca Daily Bulletin subscription.

There were also raffle prizes which were donated by the extremely generous business people of Palma, Calvia and Andratx. Thank you!

Gaia Bathtime in Palma, Bodhana Wellness, the Mallorca Tutoring Academy, Laura Gisbert Make-Up Artist, Angela Pryce, the Universal Bookshop, nutritionist Suzanne Garaty, Dr Huw Jones, TopAs shoes, Salon Bling, Confetti and Julia Ball, yoga teacher Saskia Griffiths, Studio 1, the Meson del Rey, the House of Katmandu, Golf Fantasia and Mallorca Solutions.

More than 200 cups of coffee were served, countless slices of cake eaten, and more than 400 raffle tickets were bought raising €1,500 which goes to cancer charities on the island. Izzy Newman entertained the guests, the President and Chairman of the 41 Club both gave excellent speeches, and ex Chairman, Nigel Skinner, gave a very personal speech about his current experiences of living with cancer.

All in all, a very successful and enjoyable morning. I am very proud to be involved for the third year running.

Events conspire against the euro Commentary by Moneycorp EUR weekly currency update Events conspired against the euro this week.

Beetlegate didn’t help matters, though it had more of a dampening effect on European share prices than it did on the currency itself. More important was a suspicion that the European Central Bank was sufficiently concerned about economic growth to be considering an extension to its programme of quantitative easing - printing money. The euro was also hurt by comments from senior Federal Reserve officials suggesting that US interest rates might, after all, head higher before Christmas.

On the plus side, the ECB president told the European Parliament that there is no current plan to extend QE. The euro also benefited from its status as a safe-haven when nervousness increased about the state of the Chinese economy.

So the euro lost two and a half US cents and two thirds of an Australian cent. It was just about

unchanged against sterling.

USD weekly currency update The dollar was the top performer among the major currencies. It strengthened by three and a half cents against sterling and by two and a half against the euro. The dollar also leads the way over the last month, having picked up five and a half cents from sterling and nearly four from the euro.

No credit for the dollar’s rise can go to the US economic data. Most failed to meet investors’ expectations, with only initial jobless claims and new home sales coming in better than forecast.

However, the mediocre ecostats will apparently not stand in the way of an interest rate increase by the Federal Reserve. Five of the 12 voting members of the rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee said during the week that the Federal Funds Rate would probably head higher before Christmas. That was enough to motivate investors to buy the dollar.

Federal Reserve leaders joined forces to dispel the idea that the central bank’s failure to increase American interest rates earlier this month meant there would be no move this year. Their comments helped make the Greenback the week’s top performer among the major currencies and the Canadian dollar took third place.

AUD weekly currency update It was not a great week for the Australian dollar. The Aussie fell by nearly two US cents and gave up two thirds of a cent to sterling. Its most notable loss was a 2 per c ent decline against the NZ dollar.

To an extent the Aussie’s suffering was part of a broader lack of investor appetite for ‘risky’ assets. Global share prices were mostly lower and the South African rand took an much bigger hit than the AUD. But the Australian dollar was singled out (as were the shares of global mining companies) because of the Australian economy’s particular reliance on mineral exports to China.

Hardly a week goes by without the emergence of some new and gloomy Chinese ecostat and the one just ending was no exception.

This time it was a purchasing managers’ index, which showed manufacturing activity slowing for an 11th successive month.

I HAVE just returned from a family holiday in Benidorm (we go there about twice a year and have been for the last six to seven years) and this time it was a family holiday to celebrate our golden wedding anniversary (God, the train robbers only got 30 years. Joking aside, I wouldn’t have changed a moment).

Whilst there, I had the opportunity to read Leapy Lee’s article in the free Euro Weekly and just had to comment on it. To quote my wife it was the same views I am always ranting on about.

We live in Sussex so we get a lot of migrant movement on the south coast.

That is, when Operation Stack is not bringing the whole of Kent and Sussex to gridlock.

Everything you highlighted like carrying on through Gandia to the nearest airport and on the plane to Syria is brilliant. At Calais and the Channel Tunnel the worst the migrants can expect is to be caught and returned to the port entrance to be released outside the gate so they can try again the next night, but the poor lorry drivers get fined £2,000 per stowaway.

I feel so strongly I could carry on ranting all day. Numerous people I know feel the same, they are not refugees as such unless refugees can travel across Europe with wads of Euros in their back pockets.

Jeremy Corbyn was elected Labour leader by a majority of 60 per cent. He has held 100 meetings in the UK and his polices are very popular. Renationalise the railways and utilities. End austerity. Build decent housing for our young people.

If your brand of journalism stopped calling names and started some thoughtful analysis, journalists might again become trusted in what they write. received from a friend in Northern Germany: “And this is a country that has opened its doors to some 850,000 of these refugees.

“The ‘refugees,’ by the way, we have heard, are now fighting with the police in several cities, committing robberies and barricading themselves into houses, going around in gangs intimidating people for money, including knocking on people’s doors and barging in until the householder gives them as much cash as they can find, attempted kidnappings on the way to school.

“An eight-year-old girl was robbed going to school last week; four men took her phone and her pocket money which amounted to the princely amount of 70 cents.

“I now take my child to school every day, and the parents of the ones going by bus now take turns standing at the bus stop with the kids until the bus arrives.

“The police now have a patrol car parked near the school most mornings with an officer just watching.

“The problem here is that most Germans not living in the big cities have

no experience with multinational Middle Eastern immigrants and think they are like the Western Europeans in temperament and social outlook. Boy, are they in for a surprise.”

Visiting my friend a couple of years ago I was impressed and liked the way his little granddaughter was happy to take herself off to school each morning.

ALTHOUGH we all need food, and we believe we know what is what when it comes to culinary matters, there are many stories, old wives tales and myths that have become part of our life, that may not be as correct as we would believe.

Here are the Top 10 myths busted!

1. Fried foods increase heart disease risk A study released by the British Medical Journal studied 41,000 Spanish adults over 11 years, and how much fried food they ate daily. A total of 606 heart-related incidents and 1,134 deaths were registered. Researchers found rates did not correlate with fried food intake and concluded there was no proven link between heart disease and how much food fried in olive or sunflower oil was consumed.

2. Raw is better than cooked Researchers at the Institute of Nutritional Science in Germany confirmed that a raw food diet causes low lycopene, a component linked to lower risk of cancer and cardiovascular conditions, which was found to rise in cooked foods. In addition, steaming or boiling vegetables such as asparagus, cabbage, carrots, peppers or spinach was found to increase antioxidants like carotenoids and ferulic acids. Most scientists agree the secret is to balance the raw/cooked food ratio in our diets.

3. ‘Nutrient-deficiency cravings’ Craving certain kinds of foods does not mean your body has a deficiency for one or more of the nutrients they provide, according to expert Karen Ansel, who goes as far as saying: “If cravings were an indicator of nutritional deficiency, we’d all crave fruit and vegetables.” Instead, they are often related to social and/or emotional reasons.

4. Organic foods are better than regular food While organic food (grown with an orientation towards pollution reduction and resource conservation) are cultivated without pesticides and food additives, a recent study conducted at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine examining the past 50 year’s reports on organic and conventional food found that there were no significant differences.

5. Alcohol cooks away when added to a dish

ELIMINATING EGGS: Might in fact do more damage than good.

A new study from the US agriculture department found that a percentage of alcohol remains in the dish after being cooked, in higher or lower levels depending on the cooking method. A dish with alcohol that has not being heated and left overnight in the fridge retained as much as 70 per cent of the alcohol. Baking a dish for 15 minutes still left 40 per cent of the alcohol, while a dish baked or simmered for two and a half hours retained 5 per cent.

6. Gum takes years to digest As kids, most of us can remember someone warning us not to swallow our gums because it would stay in our ‘tummies’ for years before being digested. While the flavours and sugars on the chewing gum get broken down, the base is indigestible and will go through the digestive track very slowly. But it will not take years. Instead, it will be gone in around one week.

7. Eggs make your cholesterol rocket A person’s ‘bad’ cholesterol levels increases with the intake of certain saturated and trans fats. Eggs contain very little saturated fat (approximately 1.5 grams per egg) and no trans-fat. Eliminating eggs from the diet due to cholesterol concerns might be doing in fact more damage than good, as this product contains quality proteins, vitamins and other beneficial components for the body.

8. Drinking milk is essential for strong bones

Many confuse ‘dairy’ with calcium. Even though dairy products contain calcium, which contributes to healthy bones, there are many other sources to get it from including dark-leafy greens. Calcium is by no means the only nutrient for strong bones.

Vitamin K is also vital and cannot be found in dairy (dark-leafy greens have it). Magnesium also plays an important role and can be found in almonds, potatoes or oatmeal but not dairy.

9. Low fat foods are better for your health This myth pushes consumers to go for low fat foods in an attempt to pursue a healthier diet. However, a good intake of those known as ‘good-fats’ (found in olives, almonds, fish, etc) is vital for the body. In addition, many low-fat products replace fat with other ingredients such as sugars or sodium and are high in refined carbohydrates.

10. Wooden cutting boards are a nest for bacteria The rule goes as follows: when using a cutting board, knives cause tiny cuts where bacteria, specially that from raw food, settles and potentially contaminates other food. However, a study conducted at the University of California shows that, by applying bacteria to a wooden cutting board, they noticed that its natural properties caused it to filter through the surface and settle inside, where they no longer multiply and eventually die.

BELT UP: The use of a seatbelt is mandatory for all occupants of a vehicle.

AS reported in last week’s the Euro Weekly News, the Guardia Civil traffic department was carrying out intensified checks on the wearing of seatbelts and child restraints in cars as part of a safety campaign.

As a result, more than 3,000 people in vehicles were caught not wearing a seatbelt.

During the seven-day campaign, there were 2,830 adults and 206 children under the age of 12 not wearing seatbelts.

Of these adults, 1,766 were drivers with the remaining 1,064 being passengers in vehicles; 649 were sitting in the front and 415 in the rear seats.

The campaign coincided with the re-

turn to school with the aim of reducing risk to children as well as adults by raising awareness of the need to wear safety belts.

The use of a seatbelt is mandatory for all occupants of a vehicle in both front and rear seats. There must be no more passengers in a vehicle than the number of seatbelts. Children less than 1.5m in height must use the appropriate restraints for their height and, in some cases, weight and children under the age of 12 cannot travel in the front seat, unless using properly fitted and approved restraints. The only exception is if the child is taller than 135cm, in which case they can use the normal seatbelt.

Can Spain collect IBI on illegal house?

We have been in our property since 2005 on an urbanisation of 25 villas.

At the time we were issued one common ‘catastral’ number so we all have the same number. None of us has ever paid IBI tax. Our villas are legal, but there is land adjacent that was originally planned for further construction by the same builder. Licences were granted by the town hall but later revoked by the Andalucian Regional GovernUnfortunately the ‘Junta de Andalucia’ has specifically resolved that, if the property exists physically, it can be taxed.

Driving through traffic like a winter Olympian in the down-hill slalom will only ensure the Paralympics may be the only thing you can enter... that is of course if they can locate your head after the accident.

Pedestrians on zebra crossings are only there for target practice and what’s with the shopping piled between you and the handle bars, or the pets?

I’ve unfortunately seen a few scooter v car accidents and the scooter driver never comes off better than the car driver or the car. It’s a totally lose-lose situation.

Of course none of you reading this that ride scooters do any of this… so this article is only for all the others!

Meningitis B vaccine now at pharmacies

THE Spanish Medicines and Health Products Agency (AEMPS) under the Ministry of Health, has reclassified the Meningitis B vaccine as an ‘unrestricted prescription’. No longer being classified as a medicine for hospital use, this means pharmacies are now allowed to sell the vaccine.

‘Bexsero’ is a vaccine mar-

keted by Novartis, authorised in the EU since January 2013.

It is an injectable vaccine indicated for active immunisation from two months of age against invasive meningococcal disease.

This decision to make it more widely available has been based on the evaluation of new quality and safety data

submitted by the company after the distribution of more than 1,200,000 doses of vaccine worldwide. The Ministry of Health said: “This is a decision that puts Spain in line with the other countries of the EU where it is dispensed in a pharmacy.”

Previously Spain only administered the vaccine in hos-

pital settings for people with immunodeficiencies and in cases of outbreaks. As a result, the vaccine was being administered to only a very small percentage of the population.

The vaccine will help protect against the most common cause of bacterial meningitis which is responsible for seven out of 10 cases in Spain.

SCIENTISTS are set to genetically modify embryos for the first time in the UK. The geneticists have applied for a unique licence to be able to carry out the gene manipulation procedure to find out why some women suffer miscarriages.

Critics have voiced concerns at the technique which they claim could pave the way for ‘designer babies’ where embryos are modified and selected for certain characteristics.

Earlier this year Chinese scientists became the first to use the technology but many experts say the procedure is not ready for human embryos as the Chinese research led to some unwanted mutations.

The institute in London which has applied for the licence said they are solely ‘interested in basic mechanisms of embryonic development’ in the hope the findings could be used to correct genetic defects.

How many meals in a day?

You should be aiming for five/six, broken down into three meals and two/three snacks.

Do you skip breakfast?

Are you eating a heavy meal late in the evening?

Where possible, you should aim to eat your main meal at lunchtime and have a lighter meal in the evening.

Crying does make you feel better ONE in four 18 to 34-year-olds believes that showing emotion is a sign of weakness. This was the finding of a survey carried out by mental health charity MIND. Despite the opinions and trying to keep a stiff upper lip, the charity believes that this tendency to suppress emotions could be harmful to your mental health, believing that crying to release emotion and built-up tensions and anxiety can be good for you rather than bottling it up.

The poll of 2,063 adults found women were three times more likely than men to have cried in the last week due to feeling anxious, and they were also twice as likely to say that crying had made them feel better. Half of women surveyed also said they turned to comfort eating to cope with negative feelings, compared with two-fifths of men.

MIND said that anxiety is now almost as prevalent as depression and considered severe cases a mental health issue that can impact day-to-day life. In the last year, one sixth of all calls to the charity’s information line were about anxiety and panic attacks.

Healthy-eating can lead to food disorders HEALTY eating can become obsessional for some and a rising number of people are suffering from a condition called orthorexia.

Orthorexia nervosa is the term coined for the health food eating disorder and particularly effects women in their 30’s.

It can begin with good intentions and unlike anorexia, where sufferers restrict the quantity of the food they eat, sufferers of orthorexia, derived from the Greek word

for ‘correct,’ fixate on quality and strict rules as they eliminate ‘bad’ foods such as sweets and carbohydrates.

Experts warn it can lead to severe weight loss, malnutrition and depression, impacting the sufferer socially as well as they become so obsessed with what they are eating.

The disorder was named by Dr Steven Bratman in a 1997 paper in which he said sufferers could be driven to despair by inadvertently ‘devouring a single raisin.’

Sporting events on the island THE Sa Calobra Time Trial and weekend cycling event will be held on October 3 to raise funds for Cancer Research UK and the local Cancer Support Charity in Mallorca.

Participants and their bikes will be transported from Port de Soller to the Sa Calobra climb (Coll de Reis). They can then participate in the Sa Calobra TT & race against the professionals (limited to 100 online entries).

With a number of guides they will then take the 80km route back to Port de Soller enjoying local hospitality at a number of organised locations along the way, finishing up at the Calobra Club Post Ride Paella Party.

Palma de Mallorca Marathon Half Marathon & 10km run around the streets of Palma will be held on October 18.

Over the weekend there will be a Marathon market taking place for buying running gear as well as sports and fitness articles.

SOCIAL SCENE

Autumn fair ALCUDIA Autumn Fair, with market stalls and entertainment will be held from October 2 to October 4.

This harvest festival features agriculture and the handicrafts of Alcudia and surrounding areas.

Saturday (October 3) sees the ‘Estol del Rei En Jaume’ - a group of carnival figures representing characters from Mallorcan history. There are also demonstrations and displays, as well as concerts in the evening.

Alaro Artisans Fair will take place on October 4, bringing with it wine, arts and crafts and festivities.

The annual Autumn Fair and Wine Fair in Consell will be held on October 18 in Consell.

The festivities begin at 10am in the Plaça Major.

There will be tastings of local wine, plus a number of bars and restaurants offering tapas.

Food and drink comes to town OKTOBERFEST beer festival MALLORCA’S very own Oktoberfest beer festival comes to Santa Ponsa, Calvia with beers, bratwurst, and bands. The festival will take place in Plaça de la Pinada daily from midday from October 1 until October 11. Entrance is free.

On October 4, the Black Pudding Fiesta will be held in Sant Joan with all things sausage - pork, Sobrassada and Butifarrones are roasted on barbecues throughout the village, and this is followed by traditional dancing and exhibitions.

If you prefer sweets and cakes, the Fira Dolça (sweet fair) will be held on Esporles on October 4 and promises to be heavenly for all those with a sweet tooth. There will also be stalls selling handicrafts and fairground items, exhibitions, dancing, live cookery exhibitions and other activities.

On October 15, in Campos, the Sobrassada Fair will allow visitors to try some of the best meat in Mallorca, and mainly the local speciality, the sobrassada sausage.

It looks like a chorizo but it is more like spread than an actual sausage. Locals spread it on bread and pour a little olive oil and honey over it.

There are several types available to try at the festival.

On October 25, the Red Pepper Fair (Pebre Bord) will be held in Felanitx.

AS MUCH as you love your cat, it drives you mad when you spot it sharpening its claws on the settee.

Sadly, this is completely normal behaviour for cats.

Along with sharpening their claws, which they need to do, scratching is also a way of marking their territory. After all, they are animals!

Telling them off is unlikely to help very much as they’ll probably just run away and come back when you’re not looking.

Luckily, though, there are a few tricks you can try to stop the problem: • Have their claws cut: Scratching and marking territory is a social act for young felines, especially on vertical surfaces, plus it fulfills their physical need to sharpen their claws.

If they are too long, take them to the vet to have them clipped. This is even more important as cats get older as the less active they become the less likely their claws are to be worn down naturally.

• Don’t tell them off: They’re not being naughty, they actually have a physical need to scratch things. Stopping them could even lead to

psychological and behavioural problems. A plan of action is needed.

• Provide them with toys and scratching posts: Toys and scratching posts are not only fun and a way to keep them happy, they will also eventually become their go-to place to sharpen their claws.

Although every cat is different, this type of item is never amiss at home and is bound to distract your pet from the sofa.

• Other solutions: Covering sofas with thick material, covers or plastic sheets is a good way to stop their claws getting through to the upholstery.

Another trick is to use tinfoil. Cats hate it, and the feel of it will probably put them off.

A slightly more drastic method is to use a water spray. Eventually, if done with care so as not to cause harm, cats will associate the action with the nasty water spray and desist.

And of course, never praise your cat after it has been scratching the sofa or he/she will come to think of it as a positive thing.

Meanwhile, the waverers will vote for no-one because a) ‘all politicians are the same’ and b) they would rather stay indoors in the warm.

IT’S surprising that no-one dragged up the former Education minister Jose Luis Wert’s determination to ‘españolizar’ Cataluña’s schools in 2011.

That was as futile as trying to anglicise a Scot and sufficient in itself to merit a landslide victory for independence.

It’s unfortunate that Spanish is a blanket description for Catalans, Basques, Galicians, Valencianos, Andaluces and everybody else.

A word equivalent to British would have solved a multitude of problems decades ago.

NEWS that MI5 and anti-terrorism police are monitoring more than 3,000 home-grown jihadists (including teenagers) plotting to attack the UK was met with the usual slagging off from the usual suspects.

Shami Chakrabarti, Director of civil rights group, Liberty, said the security services mustn’t be given a blank cheque. Heck, that’s not unlike someone saying I shouldn’t be given a Mayfair mansion. No one’s ever suggested it, and I’ve never asked.

Ms Chakrabarti and other doubters/appeasers/apologists have completely lost the plot. They see everything in terms of civil liberties

Maybe Ms Chakrabarti would feel more at home in somewhere like Saudi Arabia where a young man is facing crucifixion after beheading for attending an anti-government protest when he was just 17? And finally, some positive news:

British police are dropping part of their case involving alleged sex abuse against Sir Cliff Richard. In their pursuit of Cliff Richard, aren’t they simply over-compensating for their failure to bring Savile to justice?

The aerial footage of the police raid on Cliff Richard’s home broadcast on BBC was nothing less than a modern-day witch hunt. Hopefully, his anticipated comeback tour will help restore his good reputation.

Then at least some goodwill may come from such unacceptable police (and media) harassment.

Confidence in the British police is falling faster than global markets on one of their gut-churning down days.

BIGNONIAS as a family come into their own in the autumn after the first rains have dampened the roots and temperatures have dropped five degrees or more.

The exuberant pink flowered Podranea ricasoliana, pink Contesa Sara trumpet vine can be seen climbing over walls, through the upper growth of tall trees, covering dead trees and gazebos and even entire houses if let rip some years ago with no annual pruning except around doorways and windows.

This bignonia can also be used for ground cover as an almost entirely pink carpet on a bank or flat ground. In general it will flower until the first frosts and is best given a heavy winter prune each year.

The quieter evergreen Pandorea jasminoides, Bower vine, with white or pink flowers is sedate in comparison and makes a neat statement if trained in the style of a stephanotis on a wall or trained up through the leaves of a moderate sized carob tree

• Inspect roof and gutters for debris and other obstructive objects: leaves and dirt tend to get stuck in gutters or downspouts and it is important to clean them before the rains do further damage.

• Change air conditioning filters: clean air filters will keep you and your family healthy in the autumn months and potentially avoid allergies and respiratory system conditions.

• Fireplace: even though the winter is not as severe in Spain as it is in the UK and Northern Europe, many people use

the fireplace to save electricity. Make sure to check the damper and hire a professional chimney sweep if needed.

• Check windows and doors for draughts: a lot of energy is lost through doors and windows so go round the house fixing cracks as well as adding thicker curtains to keep the heat in.

• If you live in an especially rainy area, make sure to store away outdoor or pool furniture and cushions, to prevent them from breaking and fading through the colder winter months.

And of course the autumn garden is not only colourful but also productive. In a recent European poll, the consultants found that 27 per c e n t o f m o r e th an 150 investors questioned declared Spain to be their preferred investment target due, largely, to the strength of the current recovery balanced against prices which are still far from their previous peak.

FURTHER confirmation of the recovery of the Spanish property market has arrived in the shape of a report on the secondhand home market by Tecnocasa real estate group and Pompeu Fabra University.

The report, which was drawn up after studying data from Spanish cities, revealed that prices for resale homes have increased by 3.73 per cent over the first half of the year, a significant amount considering that resales currently make up 80 per cent of transactions.

The increase is considerably better than that registered during the first six months of 2014, 1.12 per cent, which put an end to year-on-year drops since 2010.

metre for secondhand homes in the country is at €1,503, whereas at the peak time between 2006 and 2007 prices were at more than €3,500 per square metre, meaning that, although on the up, they are still much more reasonable than during the so-called boom years.

The most expensive city to buy a resale home, El Mundo national newspaper has reported, is still Barcelona with an average price of €2,157 per m2, followed by Madrid at €1,646, Sevilla at €1,082, Zaragoza at €1,022, Malaga at €953 and Valencia at €718.

Rental prices slowly on the up over last year RENTAL prices in Spain have gone up 4.5 per cent over the last year according to new data from Fotocasa real estate website.

Fotocasa reported that the average price per square metre for rentals has reached €7.07 per month.

Since they reached their highest levels in May 2007 (€10.12 per square metre per month), rental prices have plummeted all over Spain.

Aragon is the region where rental prices had fallen the most (41.7 per cent), followed by Valencia (35.5 per cent), Cantabria (35.4 per cent), Castilla-La Mancha (35.4 per cent), Murcia (30.9 per cent), Asturias (27.8 per cent) and Andalucia (27.6 per cent).

Yet now prices are once again on the up, Fotocasa said, with Madrid, Extremadura and Cataluña registering small, steady, increases.

The most expensive place to rent is currently the Basque Country (€10.15 per square metre per month) followed by Madrid (€9.69) and Cataluña (€9.39), while Extremadura (€4.64) and Castilla-La Mancha (€4.68) remain the cheapest.

Kayaking a popular pastime in Mallorca

KAYAKS: Mallorca is an ideal spot for sea kayaking.

KAYAKS were created thousands of years ago by the Inuit of the northern Arctic regions. They used driftwood and sometimes the skeleton of whale, to construct the frame of the kayak, and animal skin, was used create the body. The main purpose for creating the kayak, which literally translates as ‘hunter’s boat’ was for hunting and fishing.

Kayaking is the use of a kayak for moving across water. It is distinguished from canoeing by the sitting position of the paddler and the number of blades on the paddle. A kayak sits low in the water and is similar to a canoe.

The paddler however sits facing forward, legs in front, using a double-bladed paddle to pull on one side and then the other.

German and French men began kayaking for sport and Kayak races were introduced in the Berlin Olympic Games in 1936 and since then are popular for both competitions and recreation.

The island of Mallorca is an ideal spot for sea kayaking. Experienced paddlers can simply hire a kayak but the novice would be advised to arrange an experienced guide who will not only instruct them but will know some of the best places to go.

By John Smith SEVENTY-NINE classic yachts profited from a whole week of summer-like conditions. This year’s regatta on the Cote d’Azur showed that classic yachting is alive and well, with many veterans, but also several new boats joining in for the first time.

The sight of so many vintage yachts sailing was a tonic for both spectators and crews who gain a great deal from the camaraderie of their fellow sailors, all fascinated by tackling the seas in their highly polished vessels.

In addition, some 40 dragon class boats competed in their own races and the winner was a German boat helmed by Michael Schmidt.

IT has been confirmed that Alicante will once again host the start of the Volvo Ocean Race in 2017. However, Josep Miquel Moya, Director General of Sports of Valencia, has warned that there will have to be a change in funding for the Alicante port to remain as the starting point of the race.

Moya said the agreement has been signed but a long meeting was held with the Volvo Ocean Race team and stressed they will have to assess whether the agreement with the organisation expands and see “how far the work comes and the contributions of the government for 2017.” He added: “We will stand by any event that adds value to the economy of the Valencian Region, but the starting point must always be sustainable and self-sufficient performances economically.”

He emphasised the need to “work to facilitate the arrival of sponsorships through the Patronage Act or through the declaration of public interest which

Busy winter forecast for Mallorca’s shipyards WINTER waiting lists are already in place for some of Mallorca’s shipyards according to latest reports.

Mallorca’s shipyards are facing one of their busiest maintenance and refit seasons since the economic downturn and waiting lists are already in operation. Twenty-five-yearestablished easyboats, who set up its brand new maintenance and refit division last year, is urging boat owners to make some fast decisions.

Lorenzo Vila, Director of Port Andratx-based easyboats, said, ‘Mallorca is becoming quite the hotspot for yacht repair and the island already employs 3,000 well-paid highly-qualified individuals in this sector.’ This year Jose Maria

Campuzano, CEO of STP, one of Palma’s leading shipyards, stated that yacht maintenance and refit generates over 150 million euros income for Mallorca each year with great potential for further growth.

He said “between 2008 and 2015 the number of yacht repair companies had grown 121 per cent, the number of employees by 171 per cent and the amount of space occupied by boats under repair by 175 per cent. Great news for the industry, not so great for boat owners who have to decide upon their winter maintenance plans sooner.”

Having managed two substantial refits in 2014/15, including a six-figure project on a Mangusta 80, easyboats al-

ready has an additional two six-figure projects confirmed for 2015/16. The Mangusta 80 is back for stabilisers, underwater lights, a new air-conditioning system and new teak throughout, while a Lobster 62 is having a swim platform extension, hydraulic passerelle fitted, new fuel tanks, autopilot and a hull respray. In both cases easyboats will be partnering refit experts Tecmarine.

Paul Hamill, Managing Director of STP-based Tecmarine, says, “There are certainly a lot more vessels opting to stay in Palma for refit this winter. At STP, berths in water and on the hard are filling up rapidly with a waiting list in place in some cases.

“At 105,000m² in area and with a 700-tonne travellift and capacity to work on yachts up to 120 metres, STP is one of the biggest most modern yards in the Mediterranean and most major yacht companies have a base there or nearby.

“This means refits can be

carried out efficiently, to strict timeframes and high standards. Easily accessible at the geographic centre of the Med, we also have great weather and zero strike action to contend with. Little wonder Tecmarine is bracing itself for a busy one.”
