End to animal abuse PALMA’S new protection department could make it happen!

It would be managed by the new Animal Protection Department and aims to get Palma declared a city without animal abuse.

MALLORCA government has approved a law suspending the creation and extension of shopping centres on building and rural land.

The transitional law will remain in place until June 2017 when the approval of the Sectorial Plan for Commercial Facilities is due to take place.

The island’s Head of Territory and Infra-

structures, Mercedes Garrido, said she hoped the plan would receive support so it can remain in place and be put into effect by town councils. The law also limits commercial areas of more than 700m2 used for exhibiting and selling goods on urban land.

Showrooms of less than 2,000m2 selling motorised vehicles, machinery, boats, planes, furniture and building ma-

terials are exempt.

Garrido said the aim is to avoid shopping malls and boost local commerce which “helps to keep cities alive.”

Meanwhile, plans for a commercial area in Palma Port have been abandoned, according to the President of Port Authorities, Joan Gual, who said that efforts will focus on covering port services.

By John Smith ALTHOUGH it is true to say that there are some tremendous galleries in both Madrid and Barcelona, there is still plenty to discover across the length and breadth of Spain.

Malaga, in the south, can boast the Picasso Museum, which contains almost 300 examples of his works.

Smaller than its big brother in Barcelona, it still offers a great deal to interest any lover of the artist.

Matas appeared in court this week THE former President of the Regional Government, Jaume Matas, has appeared in Palma court this week for his involvement with the Son Espases case.

A CONSTRUCTION worker, 51, was injured after falling from a height of four metres from a building in Sineu. He was taken by ambulance to Inca hospital with several injuries varying in severity.

THE Mallorca Gay Men’s Chorus has been told it can no longer rehearse at the Es Convent Shelter.

The Sant Joan de Deu Foundation, which manages the facilities, allowed them to use the centre, but the owners, the nuns of the Dominican Order, have told the foundation that their management agreement would be cancelled if they continued to allow the choir to rehearse there.

The choir director, Joan Lainez, has said that is a “homophobic attack” and that it is not the first time they have been moved on. He thanked the foundation for having allowed them to use the space for several months and explains that they had been giving part of the money made from their concerts to help the shelter as well as letting its residents attend the concerts for free. The shelter is used by people with low incomes or who have been evicted.

He said that they had been preparing the facilities for future events, both theirs and those organised by other cultural groups which had also been allowed by the foun-

Meanwhile, the Sisters say that there is nothing discriminatory in their request, but that its use was against Church regulations. They explained that the Foundation was allowed to use the facilities to help

people in danger of social exclusion but that they did not have authorisation to hire it out to others. They added that the church should be used for worship, prayer and celebrating the sacraments, and not for other purposes.

A very busy year for the justice of the peace JUST over 24 per cent of the cases were of a criminal nature

By Steve Walsh THE Justice of the Peace in Calvia dealt with 5,972 matters in 2014.

Just over 24 per cent of the cases were of a criminal nature, including 1,289 letters rogatory and 113 minor offence trials.

The remaining 4,390 cases were civil

matters, including 3,733 letters rogatory, 96 conciliation acts, a verbal trial and 560 other matters. The Justice of Peace also registered 303 births, 234 marriages, 109 divorces and 128 deaths, and certified approximately 5,000 documents.

No parking in Palma TUESDAY is World Car Free Day, and Palma City Hall has announced that parking in the streets of the old part of the city will be banned.

The Mobility Department is celebrating events which began yesterday (Wednesday) and

will continue until Tuesday as part of the European Mobility Week.

The city hall wants to raise awareness about other ways of getting around and accessing the historical centre without using a private vehicle.

Trial for ordering murder of ex-wife and her boyfriend A MAN, 27, is facing 10 years in prison for allegedly attempting to hire someone to kill his ex-wife and her boyfriend.

The woman had reported him several times for abuse and in September 2012 a restraining order was issued banning him from approaching his ex-wife, her boyfriend, and their daughter.

In February 2013, the woman was granted sole custody of their daughter and he was denied visiting rights. From then on, he allegedly began harassing the couple.

Cracks and leaks appear Cyclist killed crossing toll road in apartment building RESIDENTS in the Bloque XII apartment building in the Corea district of Palma have complained that new cracks have appeared.

Not even a month after the city hall spent public funds for repairs on the building, a large crack has appeared in the staircase.

The building was only opened in mid-2013 and the city hall has had to carry out repairs to make it inhabitable, although residents are not happy with the solutions they have been given.

Meanwhile, the contract to refurbish a monument with the statue of Antoni Maura in Plaza del Mercat has been assigned to Mitra Restaura for €31,000.

The statue fell from its pedestal last November in a storm but should be back in place by the beginning of next year. Only one company presented a project for the work, which also includes the cleaning and maintenance of the monument for a year.

In Ariany, the local infant and primary school, which opened in 2007, reportedly has

cracks in the walls, doors which can’t be opened or closed, leaking roofs and lack of water pressure or hot water.

The headmistress, has said that the school and parents will continue to demand the Balearic Government’s Education Department do something to improve the situation.

The school, which has 70 pupils and nine teachers, and will soon be officially called Guillem Frontera Pascual, also has a playground which they say is not in a proper condition for children to use.

A CYCLIST in his 30’s died in a collision with a 4x4 vehicle on the Llevant toll motorway.

He reportedly cycled across the three lanes heading to Llucmajor but was hit by the vehicle when crossing the middle lane heading towards Palma. He was thrown into the air and landed in the ditch several metres away, dying instantly.

The driver of the vehicle, in his 60’s, stopped,

and both he and his wife were in a state of shock and had to be taken to hospital. Other drivers stopped and witnesses attempted to resuscitate the victim until an ambulance arrived.

Guardia Civil opened an investigation into the accident and the driver was tested for alcohol and drugs. Both were negative. The accident led to long tailbacks.

Police are third time lucky TWO previous attempts to arrest the main failed

Plans to improve Palma PALMA City Hall has plans to improve the beach area, which is popular with tourists and which has “gone downhill” according to residents and business owners.

They include limiting alcohol sales and carrying out more inspections of premises in the area prior to the tourist season. The city hall also plans to demand that the regional government be stricter regarding ‘all-inclusive’ package holidays.

NATIONAL POLICE: Arrested man in Sineu for alleged sexual abuse.

By Steve Walsh A MAN, 20, was arrested by National Police in Sineu for the alleged sexual abuse of a young girl when he was on parole from Palma prison.

The investigation began five months ago when the Romanian victim, who is under 18, reported she had

been raped on the beach.

The suspect was identified and located in a house in Sineu. When police went to arrest him, he escaped and almost mowed down the officers with his vehicle.

He hit a couple of tourists who were travelling on a motorbike and had to be taken to Inca Hospital.

A second attempt to arrest him also resulted in him escaping and his parents being arrested for attacking the police and Guardia Civil.

The investigation revealed he was living in a house belonging to his family and a warrant was issued.

When police broke down the door he attempted to escape through the window, wearing only his underwear, but he was caught and finally arrested.

He is also charged with violating a court order, crimes against road safety, causing bodily harm and damages. He has an extensive criminal record for weapons possession and robbery amongst other crimes.

Sentenced for abuse A MAN, 67, is facing 10 and a half years in prison for the alleged sexual abuse of his partner’s daughter in s’Arenal.

The abuse allegedly began in 2007 when the girl was 11 and occurred when they were alone in the house. If found guilty he may have to pay the girl €6,000 in compensation.

Meanwhile, a man has been sentenced in Palma court to two years in prison for mentally abusing his two sisters.

Between December 2013 and February 2014 he threatened the two women, who he lived with, and on one occasion he threw a TV at them. He wrote threats in messages and on social networks causing them to suffer from anxiety, depression and other disorders, and leading them to move house. The man, who was addicted to drugs, is banned from approaching the victims or communicating with them for five years.

€160m of EU funds THE European Union will provide almost €160 million for the Balearic Islands to promote innovation and the use of renewable energies.The amount, made available through the European Fund for Regional Development over the coming years until 2023, will also go towards improving competitiveness of small and medium businesses.

Stop drilling THE Balearic Government will formally request that companies planning to drill for oil around the islands voluntarily desist from their projects. The regional government will also ask the central government and the EU to reject requests which have already been presented and suspend any plans to drill around the Islands.

sailing club. A lifeguard treated her but she had extremely serious injuries to her face and head and when paramedics arrived they were unable to resuscitate her.

Police and Guardia Civil attended the scene and an investigation was launched into the accident as the sea was calm and sailing conditions were optimal.

Psychologists offered counselling to her parents.

Ex-policeman arrested for armed robbery

THREE people have been remanded in prison THREE people have been remanded in prison without bail accused of an armed robbery in La Porciuncula, Palma, in late July.

They allegedly stole a car at gunpoint and took almost €300,000.

One of them is a former National Police officer who was expelled from the force after being sentenced to eight years in prison for several robberies between 2002 and 2005. It appears he planned the attack.

Wearing police vests, they ordered a driver to stop and thinking they were police offi-

cers, obeyed, but he and two other occupants of the vehicle were then threatened with a gun and told to leave the car. They were carrying the takings of several businesses in s’Arenal in the vehicle at the time.

The men then fled in the vehicle towards Llucmajor and a manhunt was launched by the National Police, also involving the Guardia Civil and Local Police.

The stolen Volkswagen Golf was later found nearby and police suspect the men had another vehicle waiting in which they could escape.

The other suspects are a police officer who had been involved in several confrontations with his superiors a few years ago, and a Cuban resident of Palma.

Police are investigating how they knew the money would be in the vehicle and suspect the involvement of someone linked to the company and further arrests are likely.

They have recovered around €20,000 in the homes of the detainees and are investigating whether the rest of the money has recently been used to purchase property.

ROAD ACCIDENTS: Ninety five per cent occur in good weather conditions.

National report on road safety in Spain (DGT) BETWEEN 2003 and 2007 over 316,600 motorbikes over 500cc were licensed in Spain.

According to Spanish statistics, motorbike riders are 17 times more likely to be injured in a road traffic accident than car drivers. In order to understand and then reduce the number of motorbike accidents, the DGT (Spanish equivalent of the DLVC) has produced a report on road traffic safety. Here we bring you the main conclusions of why these accidents occur.

WHEN DO ACCIDENTS OCCUR? Nearly 30 per cent of urban motorbike and scooter accidents happen at the weekend and the percentage of accidents resulting in death increases to 42 per cent. The highest rate occurs between 06.00h and 20.00h.

OTHER VEHICLES INVOLVED Eight one per cent of motorbike accidents involve at least one other vehicle, although the mortality rate decreases slightly when another vehicle is involved. Seventy per cent of accidents result from collisions between bikes and other vehicles. In urban areas, three out of four accidents involving bikes, also involve another vehicle.

WHY DO ACCIDENTS HAPPEN? Five factoring conditions have been taken

into consideration; traffic, road surface, atmospheric, human and accident type. In urban areas, the injury increases by 31 per cent in faster moving traffic. This means that 97 per cent of mortalities occur in fluid traffic. Ninety five per cent of accidents occur during good weather conditions. This also implies fewer motorbikes and scooters drive in bad weather.

Statistically, the conditions of the road do not significantly affect the level of accidents.

THE HUMAN FACTOR In urban areas, alcohol, and drugs increase the injury level by 170 per cent, whilst speed increases the level by 370 per cent. The report estimates that almost a third of accidents involving motorbikes and other four wheeled vehicles result from the motorbike not being seen by the driver of the car. Forty per cent of accidents in urban areas involve head-on or side collisions between bikes and cars.

KEY FINDINGS OF THE REPORT In urban areas, accidents occur at intersections involving traffic lights and roundabouts.

On roads, the majority of accidents happen when overtaking on dual carriageways and normal roads, at exits and entries, and at intersections involving stop signs and give way.

Alleged fraud of public funds PALMA Provincial Court will hear a case against the former Head of the Education Department, Joana Maria Camps, for alleged embezzlement of public funds.

The Balearic Teachers’ Assembly appealed the decision of a court in Palma to close their case against her in December last year and the provincial court has accepted the appeal. The case points to alleged irregularities in her trips to Menorca paid with public funds. She was born on the island and has property there.

She allegedly visited Menorca 32 times in eight months in 2013, 17 occasions coincided with weekends and she stayed for several days. Meanwhile she visited Ibiza twice, returning to Palma the same day.

He met with the President of the Association, Joan Venys, who told him of the work they do, especially with the young, and they discussed how important it is for the town hall to

continue helping the association. The mayor promised to continue collaborating and helping.

The meeting was also attended by councillors for Social Cohesion, Nati Frances; Social Services and the Elderly, Mayte Alberti; head of Social Services, Empar Santacreu, and ASDICA social worker, Anabel Sanchez.

A champion of animal welfare Our Euro Women series is featuring women who have made a success of their lives in Spain. These outstanding ladies have been shattering glass ceilings whether in business, charity work or sports.

Stacey Lloyd Dolphin has raised awareness of animal charities.

THE first thing that draws your attention to Stacey Lloyd Dolphin is her bright blue eyes, that have probably been her biggest asset when dealing with sick and homeless animals.

Stacey is well known here in Spain and also Europe, where she works alongside animal organisations to re-home dogs and cats.

She first arrived in Spain in the early 1990s, when she and her husband Tim sailed their boat over from the Dorset coast.

The plan was to visit Spain for the summer and then head off to the Canary Islands for the winter in their boat, The Dolphin, and enjoy a life on the waves moving from port to port.

However, they fell in love with the Costa del Sol, and observing the high influx of tourists around Fuengirola Port, decided to stay and offer pleasure trips on The Dolphin.

Stacey worked hard in order to get the boat registered and insured to enable them to do this, which became a major chore, as there was no other boat operating pleasure trips in the area.

Through much determination and lots of pesetas feeding the local call box, her hard work paid off.

She managed to obtain the correct licences to offer the very first pleasure-boat trips to set sail from the port in Fuengirola.

Business was booming and The Dolphin was soon leading the waves, as others set up more boating trips to do the same.

Then Stacey received some bad news from the UK. Her dad had died and so she had to return to the UK to comfort her mother and make all the necessary arrangements.

TIRELESS ORGANISER: Stacey works hard to arrange social gatherings, raffles and sponsored activities to raise funds.

Her tenacity reaps rewards

Stacey has used her experience to set up 4 Paws, a charity which also saves animals on death row As Stacey cleared the house of her father’s belongings, she gave items to a local animal charity, which used funds raised to re-home and spay strays.

She knew then that she could do the same for the very few organisations that were operating in Spain. Stacey had seen many communities inundated with sick and abandoned animals.

Upon her return to Spain, Stacey immediately began to put projects in place to raise funds to help the few animal charities that were operating here. She also negotiated with local vets to arrange for the necessary injections, operations and neutering of the strays.

Using her organisational skills Stacey arranged social gatherings, raffles, and sponsored activities, which accelerated funds coming in. A scheduled programme

a vast improvement.

Before too long, Stacey wanted to expand and take the project even further, and

with networking, she had built up an excellent relationship with various venues which could host bigger and better events.

After meeting with the owner of the Caribbean Bar, Carvajal, and a brainstorming session with him, the obvious solution was to arrange a New Year’s Day Swim; it was the perfect location to do something big. This was to be a major fundraising event that would spiral into an annual tradition.

It is now a decade since the New Year’s Day Swim was born back in 2005, with only 15 swimmers and supporters coming to cheer them on. Every year the number of swimmers and sponsorship grew and each year the day raised an average of €5,000, one year peaking at a grand total of €7,000. These funds have gone towards programmes which enable the animals to be sent to other European countries, mainly Finland, to be adopted and find their forever homes. Stacey has since set up her own charity, 4 Paws, which also saves animals on death row at shelters, and finds owners to care for them.

She is the first up in the morning, and last to bed at night, dedicating herself to feeding programmes and airport trips in between all the events she is organising.

Stacey has made a massive difference to many animal charities with her continued hard work and energy.

The current system with garbage trucks picking up bins in the narrow streets is complicated and annoying for residents in the area.

The company in charge of collecting rubbish has hired a team of experts to propose solutions for the city centre and the final decision will be reached in agreement with all political parties and local residents.

The number of metro users also rose by 0.2 per cent according data from the National Institute of Statistics.

Medicine for Balearic University THE President of the Balearic Government, Francina Armengol, and the Dean of the Balearic Islands University (UIB), Llorenรง Huguet have promised that from next term, students will be able to enrol in Medicine.

How do eyes work?

To see clearly, light must be focused precisely on the back of the eye, known as the retina.

It enters through the pupil and is focused by a clear flexible lens controlled by tiny muscles.

What causes poor vision?

If this natural lens does not work effectively, or the shape of your eyeball is irregular, your vision may be blurred at certain distances. Prescription lenses can correct problems.

Why do older people need glasses?

As you grow older, the natural lens becomes less flexible and the muscles controlling its shape become less efficient.

Known as presbyopia, this affects everyone at some point, most commonly in your mid40s. Your eyes will begin struggling to adjust between distance and reading vision. To rectify it, you need a reading addition to your prescription.

What does it mean to be short sighted?

Also known as myopia, this occurs when the eyeball is too long or the power of the eye is too strong. You can see near objects clearly but those further away are more blurred. Con-

What is long sight?

Fighting against forged items SEVEN locations were searched in Palma

By Steve Walsh IN a joint operation carried out by the Guardia Civil and the Tax Office, 57 people have been charged with distributing forged goods in the Balearic Islands.

Almost 14,740 forged brand name items valued at

more than â‚Ź2.6 million were seized including jewellery, sportswear, caps, sunglasses, electronic equipment and mobile phone accessories.

Officers also seized 19,721 dangerous items, including 1,279 powerful laser pointers.

The items were seized in

shops and warehouses managed by Chinese, Pakistani and Senegalese citizens who have been charged with crimes against industrial property.

Seven locations were searched in Palma, six in Alcudia Port and one in Magaluf.

A ROMANIAN man, 33, is facing seven and a half years in prison for throwing rocks at cars from a bridge over Inca toll motorway.

In December 2014 he threw several stones weighing around 400g from the Cami Nou bridge at cars heading towards the Alcampo shopping centre.

One of them hit a vehicle, the driver of which swerved, not knowing what had happened. He was uninjured but his vehicle sustained damaged valued at almost â‚Ź770.

An off-duty National Police officer caught the accused with a stone in his hand which he was about to throw and which he dropped upon being discovered. The two men fought and four other officers were needed to handcuff the suspect who kicked and resisted arrest.

He said, “At about 100mph into takeoff on runway 07L, there was a loud bang and a fire broke out on the left engine.

Captain Chris Henkey immediately aborted takeoff and told the tower he had an engine fire.

A few seconds later he called Mayday, Mayday and told the tower he was evacuating his passengers and requested fire services. The quick thinking female controller informed the Captain the fire services were already on their way. She had already seen the severity of the fire prior to his request.

“Listening to the Air Traffic Control transmission tapes during the emergency, I was so impressed with the professionalism shown by the Captain and especially by the female tower frequency controller on shift. I have spoken to and listened to 100s of ATC controllers, this lady was unbelievable. It was the cockpit crew, the cabin crew of BA2276 and the shift in the McCarran Tower, that saved the lives of the 172 people onboard. It is this type of professionalism that makes BA one of the world’s three best airlines.”

IN a statement issued by USCA - the union for air traffic controllers - on September 10, it was revealed that the second runway at Malaga airport, opened for use in 2012 was used less than 1 per cent of the time in 2014 and they forecast the same for 2015.

They suggest this lack of use causes economic losses for the airport and delays passengers, citing the fact that on September 7, during the extremely bad weather, the second runway remained closed and a number of flights were diverted to Granada and Sevilla. Often, air traffic controllers have been blamed for delays, but the union notes that more and more passengers are now using the airport, so with only one runway in operation they often have to stack incoming planes and outgoing aircraft often have long waits on the tarmac before takeoff.

The runway has been used more extensively in the past but there appears to be no plan in place if the main runway is closed. As the number of passengers to and from Malaga increases, so USCA members want to see a safe and workable plan.

Morrisons sells its loss-making division of 140 convenience stores eas of high footfall. Other supermarkets have had considerable more success with their convenience stores but Morrisons just couldn’t emulate them.

Having announced a loss before tax of £792 million (€1,07 billion) earlier this year, the company needed to review its position and even selling these stores at a loss estimated at £30 million (€41 million) has pleased the market as they were considered to be a drain on resources which diverted management from other more important tasks.

The group has also announced that it will close 11 supermarkets with a possible loss of 900 jobs as part of its recovery plan Despite the current difficulties, those who live near Gibraltar are able to see for themselves how very popular that branch of Morrisons is and it is reputed to enjoy one of the highest turnovers in the group.

AN announcement was made on September 9 advising that Morrisons would sell its loss-making M chain of 140 local convenience stores for a sum in the region of £25 million (€34 million) to a company funded

A female expert in the ‘politics of outer space’ said she was ‘uncomfortable’ about sending out non PC messages to aliens because - wait for it. ‘It may attract the wrong type of alien.’

UNLESS miracles occur, which I very much doubt, I fear today to write Europe’s obituary. The shameful end of Europe, overrun by non-Europeans and collapsing in economic chaos, betrayed by its leaders, has possibly reached the point of no return. This is just the start.

Many Germans, brainwashed on a diet of self-hate since 1945, welcome their self-immolation. There are many post-colonial self-haters in Britain too.

In 1975, ‘Camp of the Saints,’ the apocalyptic novel by French author Jean Raspail was published. The setting is a Europe that disappears with hardly a whimper as armadas of Third World refugees storm Europe’s shores.

Then in my 30’s I could not close the pages on this prophetic witness to Europe’s doom. You could purchase this book only ‘under the counter’ despite the fact that in France it was a bestselling award-winning novel.

Since then I have experienced the darkest prophecies by everyone from

Learning to climb every mountain FACING your fears, whatever they are, has to be done, no matter what age you are Vicki McLeod

Family Matters “I’m not going. I’m NOT!” My daughter, La Gidg, has determinedly set out her stall over the last weeks after we announced our plan to go for a walk en famille to the ‘hole in the rock restaurant’ at Sa Foradada in Deia.

Completely understandable really: last time she went on a big walk involving a steep hill climb and descent (January 2015, Sa Trapa) she slipped and fell, slicing her leg open. We ended up in hospital having her knee stitched up to the tune of 15 external and god knows how many internal stitches.

This incident was then followed by several weeks of outpatient appointments to the paediatric department and an as yet pending plastic surgery operation for this winter coming. She could get away with saying that a shark attacked her the scar is that big and scary.

She was extraordinarily brave when we made our way down after she fell, keeping going through extreme pain and in very difficult circumstances, but her courage seemed to have given way

to what some might say was a sensible approach, but my husband and I thought was overly cautious.

We’re not the most ‘outward bound’ family, although we do try, so her new

approach to going for a walk on a Sunday didn’t really go down that well.

We tried a variety of arguments to get her to change her mind: rationalising that it was a fluke accident that was

unlikely to repeat, playing it cool and waiting for her to change her mind, and most recently, blackmail.

That good old fashioned parenting tool which has to be got out of the box now and again. Really we needed to get her ‘back on the horse’ and back on the trail as we knew that the fear could be overcome.

So, last Sunday, following a couple of quite difficult ultimatums, we finally got on the track. My husband went ahead of us and we were left to make our own way down, just as we had when we descended from Sa Trapa.

Walking slowly down to the sea, and to lunch, my daughter and I had the time of our lives. We gossiped about boys, talked about funny things she had done when she was a baby, and we spoke about the future. We looked after each other going down the steep path, and then back up it again, and don’t be mistaken, it’s a tough hot, breathless climb back up. But that’s to be expected isn’t it, and facing your fears, whatever they are, has to be done, whatever age. www.familymattersmallorca.com

Not a smooth cruise to victory Commentary by Moneycorp Weekly currency update THE confused response to last Friday’s North American employment data set the tone for a week of capricious sentiment and unusual currency reactions. Sterling shared the honours with the euro, strengthening by an average of 1.1% against the other dozen most activelytraded currencies. It was not a smooth cruise to victory though: the lead changed hands almost on a daily basis. At the back of the field it looked for most of the week as if there would be no contest for the Japanese yen’s wooden spoon. The NZ dollar made a late bid though: its -2.4% loss on the week was not a whole lot more impressive than the yen’s -2.7% decline.

Sterling weekly update The reason for sterling’s success was a bit of a mystery, given the mostly-mediocre UK economic statistics and news. The British Retail Consortium reported increased sales but at steadily-falling prices. July’s trade deficit was

the widest in 19 months as the export of goods fell to its lowest level since September 2010.

Manufacturing and industrial output both registered unexpected monthly declines in July.

The National Institute for Economic and Social Research estimated that economic growth slowed to 0.5% in the three months to August.

Sterling did react positively to a couple of bullish house price reports, from the RICS and the Halifax. It also enjoyed a modest relief rally when the Monetary Policy Committee minutes revealed an 8/1 vote in favour of keeping interest rates unchanged: there had been some concern that one member might vote for a cut.

USD weekly update The two North American dollars were unchanged on the week against one another, both falling by -1.5% against the pound and the euro.

EUR weekly update Like sterling, the euro’s advance was unconnected to any compellingly-vibrant economic data. German factory orders and

industrial production were disappointing, as were French industrial output and Euroland investor confidence. The one bright light was an upgrade to eurozone economic growth in the second quarter, from 0.3% to 0.4%.

China weekly update Although China’s yuan is still not a freelyexchangeable currency the country’s economic performance does have considerable influence on other currencies.

By and large, when things are going well in China the currencies of its major trading partners are buoyant. But things are not going well in China right now. Exports were down by an annual -5.5% in August while imports plunged 13.8%.

In the week ahead the most important event, by far, will be the US Federal Reserve’s interest rate statement on Thursday evening. Whilst most analysts expect the Fed to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged there is the possibility that it will announce the long-awaited increase.

September 3, 2015: The date on which Europe surrendered WE will remember this day for the rest of our lives.

This is the day we lost our civilisation. The enemy is within our gates, and more and more will pour in. We are finished. This is the end.

Or at the very least, the beginning of the end. And to think that it took just one image, one photo of a threeyear-old boy lying dead on a Turkish beach, to shatter our resolve and turn the tide.

One image was the straw that broke Europe’s back.

Bad practice I AM very disappointed at the poor management of some of our top tourist attractions.

The latest - Camino del Rey - is still showing fully booked calendars for June to September, with no availability for October onwards. Tour companies are block-booking the free time and then offering entrance as part of a paid package. These attractions should be available to all.

The same complaints are being expressed about Nerja Caves and the Alhambra Palace. It is just not good enough.

HAVE we learned nothing? Computer viruses have caused us all many nightmares over the years to the point now where they are part of life, and we just have to suffer with them causing damage and costing us money.

The way they get into the system is via a Trojan horse, something nasty hidden inside something innocent. Is it only me that sees the same thing happening with the migrant crisis at the moment? How come thousands of European people are welcoming with open arms hundreds of thousands of Middle Eastern migrants without question. Are they mad?

Don’t get me wrong, any family from anywhere that needs help should be helped, but looking at the images on TV and in the press over the last week, many thousands of the migrants are single young men, well dressed, clean shaven, carrying iPhones and wearing Reeboks. Don’t tell me that amongst the hundreds of thousands flooding in there aren’t a couple of thousand terrorists.

Islamic State and Al-Qaeda are not stupid, this has been planned, their Trojan horse has worked. Why didn’t all the migrants head south to countries that are closer to their way of life, customs and religion?

I don’t believe everything I read in the newspapers. In fact, after the phone-hacking affair, I have an extremely poor opinion of all journalists. This is endorsed every week when I read your articles. You are such a hypocrite. You pillory the mainstream press, then you produce incredulous conspiracy theories dragged up from extremely dubious sources.

Why should anyone believe what

you write? You are no different from the people you are slating.

As far as I’m concerned the reality is you are actually doing exactly what all journalists do, which is creating stories and manipulating information that will be read in order to sell newspapers. The only difference is that they are in places like Fleet Street and you are in some backwater in Spain.

I like to read the newspapers despite the fact that I take a lot of what I read with a pinch of salt.

School agony HAVING just been through the mixed emotions of the start of another new school year, I can’t help wondering whether teachers in this country put parents (seemingly mothers particularly) through as much agony as possible where books and materials

are concerned in subconscious revenge for having to put up with our little darlings all morning for the next nine months.

This year my daughter, who is almost 10 and has started Year 5 at primary school, was issued with a list of stationery supplies, all of which had to be named. Yes, all. Every single pencil, eraser, felt-tip pen had to be labelled, teacher insisted. Why? Does it really matter who uses which pencil and are we not just encouraging children to rely on us conveniently naming everything for them rather than making sure they know where their stuff is?

Also this year all primary students have been issued with new textbooks by the regional government. All free, supposedly. Yet how come parents have to take their cheque-libro and order the books, wait for months for them to turn up, spend time and petrol on never-ending trips to see if they’ve arrived. Then on top of it all, we have to spend money on plastic covers for these so-called free books. Not to mention the aggro to get the plastic covers on!

Seventeen books later, I have to share a tip: whatever you do, don’t try and use the sticky plastic or you will find the will to live disappears long before the pile of books is covered.

Automated agony - I can’t handle it Mike Senker

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man SO I wake in the morning, push my elbows out and don’t feel any wood which mea n s I ’ v e m a d e it th ro u g h an o th er night. So we are off to a good start and that’s as far as it goes, as my day, as usual, goes downhill from there.

I love a bit of technology so I pick up my phone and decide to ask Siri (that’s the lady that lives in my iPhone) what the weather will be like today. I’ve never done this before but have been informed by reliable sources that I have to get used to voice recognition.

I’ve encountered it a few times and to be honest I don’t get on with it too well.

Or come to that with any of this automated call stuff - you know what I mean - press 1 for this, 2 for that, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 for some other option by which time I’ve forgotten what the first 3 were

so I press 9 and listen to them all again.

Eventually I hit the right number and get another message saying please have my account/phone/NIE/or whatever ready s o th e y ca n de a l w ith my e nquiry a s swiftly as possible.

I gather up all the necessary documents so I can be swiftly dealt with and then it starts - THE MUSIC! I listen to it for a few minutes then I get a ring tone.

I think ‘aye aye’ that wasn’t too bad... then I get the automated voice - ‘Sorry we are encountering an unusually high amount of calls today but please hold as y o u r ca ll is importa nt to us .’ Is it? I d o n ’t th i nk s o be c a us e if it w a s you would employ people to answer your bloody phones!!!

But I digress - back to Miss Siri. Me: “the weather today?” Siri : “This is what I know about Walter Mitty.” Me: “ W h at? The w e a the r toda y? ” Siri: “Here’s what I know about wet teddies.”

Absolute waste of time so I decide to get out of bed and use a much better and reliable system... I look out of the window. Job done!!

Save money on fuel AS part of a new series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

FUEL CONSUMPTION: Turning off the engine is one of the best ways of saving.

WE could all do with making more monetary savings and there are things you can do to reduce fuel consumption in your vehicle.

Keeping the windows closed, not carrying excess loads, keeping your speed and engine revs down all make a different to the amount of fuel your vehicle consumes: 1. Drive your car in a gentle manner avoiding excessive acceleration and deceleration.

2. Check your tyres. This should be routine practice for safety reasons.

3. Keep the engine revs steady. The most efficient levels are between 2,000 and 2,500 for petrol cars and 1,500 to 2,500 for diesels.

4. Move through the gears correctly to help maintain a controlled level of revs. First gear uses the most fuel so use that least.

5. Carrying unnecessary items can hinder the flow of air and reduce aerodynamics and

therefore increase fuel consumption, for example, an empty roof rack can increase consumption by 2 per cent and when loaded, it can increase up to 35 per cent.

6. Maintain a safe and adequate distance when driving. Managing to avoid sudden breaking and acceleration helps fuel consumption.

7. Leave the car. For journeys of less than 3km, it is cheaper to use public transport.

8. Close windows. Modern cars are designed for optimum aerodynamics, but having the windows open can reduce that effect causing drag.

9. Check the air con. Having the temperature set below 20 degrees can increase fuel consumption by 20 per cent.

10. Turn off the engine. Although it is not always practical, turning off the engine is one of the best ways of saving fuel.

October festivals ALCUDIA Autumn Fair, with market stalls and entertainment, will be held from October 2 to October 4.

This harvest festival features agriculture and the handicrafts of Alcudia and surrounding areas.

I am from the old school and pleased that 27 years ago I took further various courses in London with John Fisher and Annette Conn and others also attending many training schools in the UK and USA, the result of which I was able to advance and educated myself to progress studying root causes of unwanted behaviour and use modern methods. One of these included using a head collar especially good for senior people that have a pet dog yanking them along

the street. The head collar changed this to pleasure and never punishment.

It is sad that many Police Service dog handlers who retire do not address the issue of training and working with pet owners which is a total different ball game. At the time of writing this I am mentoring one police officer who works in corrections (Prison) in Las Vegas and another new friend with the Sydney Police working with two dogs and they now want to study behaviour.

More should follow this example.

More jetting with pets WHILE in the past flying with pets was complicated, it is increasingly becoming an option for pet owners travelling within EU member states.

Now, Iberia has reported, more and more people are choosing to take their pets with them when they travel rather than leaving them in kennels and so far this year the Spanish airline says it has carried more than 29,000 pets on both do-

mestic and international flights.

Between January and August more pets flew with Iberia than in the whole of 2014.

Dogs, cats, turtles and birds are all allowed to fly by the airline, providing they have all necessary passports, vaccinations and microchips where required. Small pets can travel in the cabin with their owners, and larger pets are carefully catered for in the cargo hold.

We love him very much and he seems to like us, we’re following your instructions and promise to take good care of him. I’ll send you the pictures as soon as we get them back.

Just a couple of questions, you know how new ‘Mums’ worry, so I’d like to know:

After Bud grows up if his hips hurt him, will you explain to my boys why they can’t take him for walks?

If his elbows hurt when he goes up the stairs will you comfort him when he can’t sleep next to John any more?

If he goes blind will you teach the boys to play carefully with him so no one gets hurt?

If he pees on the floor every time we get home will you convince my husband that he still has to be an inside dog?

If he growls at other children will you help when take Buddy to school for Pet Day?

If his heart should skip one beat too many when he’s only three years old and we lose him can you bring him back?

Dear Breeder, we already love Buddy so much and I know how hard you’ve worked to produce ‘sound dogs.’ Did you do all you could? Was there some little thing that you decided just wasn’t necessary to check? You see our future happiness depends on how carefully you did this breeding because Buddy is not just a dog; he’s part of our family.

By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.

A MONTH ago exactly I was amazed by two newspaper articles, one in the Daily Mail and the other in the EWN. The first described the £116 million (excluding handling charges of £22 to £40 per authorised order) of gluten free junk food being provided by NHS doctors on prescription which include custard creams, doughnuts and pizzas in spite of the UK’s obesity crisis. The second recommended that we eat liquorice allsorts to achieve the 14mg a day of iron intake recommended by the EU. The first flabbergasted me when the home growing of beneficial fruit and vegetables is so widespread in the UK compared to Spain.

The latter reminded me that as a child I was often given in war-time England a stick of

liquorice from a liquorice plant for its blood improving benefits and in Spain the plants were often grown on allotments surrounding the coastal villages.

Indeed in some areas along the coast, including the Segura valley in Alicante Province,

liquorice now grows wild between irrigated fields. May be the liquorice sticks still chewed

by Spanish children come from that area.

This need for iron and the fact that a diet of processed foods can result in iron deficiencies unless iron additives

are part of the formulations prompted me to check through the tables of garden produce benefits in our book ‘Living well from our garden Mediterranean style.’

This highlighted the following natural sources of iron that can be included in an interest-

ing wholesome garden version of a Mediterranean diet.

Fruits - Grapes and raisins, peaches and apricots especially if dried, strawberries, gooseberries, mulberries, natal plums, olives, quince.

Vegetables - Broccoli, Brussel sprouts, garlic, green leaves, beans, courgettes, cauliflowers, rocket, pumpkin seeds, peas,

Be wise, start preparing for autumn and winter WITH winter coming with a drop in temperature and increase in rainfall, the wise resident should consider a few actions now to ensure that there aren’t any major problems later.

As far as the interior of the house is concerned, do check for draughts from doors and ill-fitting windows as it is very simple to fit a self-adhesive draught excluder around the frame of doors in particular.

If your ceiling fan has a reverse switch, use it to run the fan’s blades

in a clockwise direction as the fan will produce an updraft and push down into the room heated air from the ceiling.

If you don’t have warm air heaters then don’t forget to order stocks of wood and have your chimney swept as compacted soot or birds nest can easily catch fire.

If you have gutters clean them and also clear any drainage holes on terraces. Quite a few people have downspouts with no butt to catch the water,

so either install a butt or possibly add extensions to downspouts to keep water away from your property.

The other important thing is to try to check your roof to make sure that all is well, but beware climbing by yourself and also don’t let anyone who turns up uninvited check the roof as they may well damage it on purpose.

Finally resist pruning too early but do check that there are no branches from trees too close to your property in case of strong winds.

A house for just €1 SPANISH cities have not yet picked up on the idea, but they may well in the future decide to copy France and the UK and offer dilapidated homes at symbolic prices to cut down on overwhelming growth of urban areas and generate jobs.

At the moment only rural ar-

eas offer this type of bargain; for example, in A Xesta, Pontevedra, homes are being put up for rent for a symbolic price in exchange for tenants carrying out repairs, and in Olmeda de la Cuesta, Cuenca, the council has put up plots of abandoned land suitable for building at just €200 in an attempt to attract new inhabitants to the area.

Meanwhile, a French city, Roubaix, with around 100,000 inhabitants, has launched a scheme whereby the council bought up abandoned homes and will be selling them for €1.

In a similar way to a scheme in Liverpool in 2013, where 20 homes were sold for £1 each so buyers would renovate them within three years.

THE Spanish Property Price Index (IPV) rose 4 per cent in the second quarter of this year compared to last year’s figures, the National Statistics Institute (INE) has reported.

In July, there were 13.9 per cent more sales than in the same month last year, reaching a total of 32,714, the second best figure registered in more than two years. Following demand from sailors, ISAF Member National Authorities and the me-

dia, the International Sailing Federation launched the ISAF Sailing World Cup in 2008 to bring the existing major regattas on the Olympic sailing circuit together.

Spanish competitors made the long journey to Qingdao in China to participate in the leg that is mainly for Asian competitors wanting to qualify for Rio next year.

With new vessels due to arrive at Palma during 2016, it is important that vessels and their passengers are handled with care and consideration.

Volvo Ocean Race visits Genoa Boat Show at end of September PUBLIC will be captivated by shows in the Dome cinema, showing high definition videos on the race and life at sea

By John Smith THE Volvo Ocean Race returns to centre stage less than three months after the spectacular finish of the 2014-15 race, when it brings its special brand of exciting racing, shows and public events to the Genoa Boat Show from September 30 to October 5.

Team SCA and Team Vestas Wind will go head-to-head again on a series of Pro-Am races starting September 30, while on the following Saturday, they will be starring in the traditional Genoa Boat Show fleet race.

The Genoa Boat Show will offer a rare chance out of race-time for the fans and visitors to see the ocean racers sail just metres from the

city’s seafront and meet some of the sailors who have written the latest pages of the race’s history.

Several members of the shore crew and guests, some of whom will commission the boat and sail from Alicante to Genoa the weekend prior to the Genoa Boat Show, will also accompany the team.

Libby Greenhalgh, British navigator of Team SCA, will help lead a team from the women’s crew against Nicholson, Sehested and the rest of the Team Vestas Wind line-up.

“It will be great to be back racing again and being part of the Genoa Boat Show - attending the busiest Boat Show in the Mediterranean is a fitting way to cap off the summer,” she said.

Death in Cannes THIS year’s Cannes Yachting Festival was shocked by news of a fatal accident on the night of September 12.

A 30-year-old Serbian journalist was killed instantly when she jumped off a 12m RIB during a sea trial. It is thought that after a large wave had knocked the captain and another man overboard that she panicked and jumped into the sea where she was hit by the propellers.

The Genoa Boat Show will also give the visitors the opportunity to visit the Cross Section, a full size, and completely equipped Volvo Ocean 65 half model.

They will get a real taste of what it’s like to be inside one of the world’s fastest and most powerful offshore boats. The Cross Section was one of the most popular attractions during the nine-month event, which finished on June 27.

The public will also be captivated by the shows in the Dome cinema, a huge structure that hosts a movie theatre showing high definition videos on the race and life at sea.

By Tony Myles THE Continental Wealth Management Annual Golf Day at La Sella enjoyed an extra celebrity element last week, as Phil de Glanville and Matt Perry were special guest competitors.

Both Phil and Matt have enjoyed an exceptional career in Rugby for England and Bath, having gained over 70 international caps between them.

With the Rugby World Cup just a few days away it was a splendid coup for Continental Wealth Management

CELEBRITY GUESTS: Phil de Glanville and Matt Perry. to secure these guys, even though it was for a flying visit, and everyone who had a opportunity of meeting them, expressed real appreciation for their friendly and informal manner and their great sense of humour.

Despite having a late night the previous evening, due to delayed flights and a few small beers, both men were remarkably fresh when they teed off just after 1 o’clock, surrounded by a host of spectators and fans.

Just a week previously the heavens had bestowed up us the muchlonged-for rain and so the course was even more demanding than normal with less run on the ball and slightly longer growth on the fairways. So extra credit must go to those who played remarkably well and some commiserations to the many who didn’t.

The golf day extended into the evening and everyone moved across to the Marriott poolside where the caterers were waiting with an enormous BBQ. Speeches were made, winners were applauded and a large sum was raised on behalf of GrantA-Wish.

This is the local charity that benefits from many events organised by Continental Wealth Management and on this occasion they were delighted to receive in excess of €2,200.

So who won?

Late nights, several beers, very little sleep were exactly the ingredients that Matt Perry needed in order to score 42 points and playing off a handicap of 13. His companion Phil de Glanvillle was also worthy of note in seventh place with 34 points.

As Continental Wealth Management were picking up the bill for the event we must mention their CEO, Anthony Downs, who came a close second with a very credible 40 points and a handicap that will suffer from a degree of adjustment in future events.

It was an excellent day which ran smoothly throughout thanks to the team at CL GOLF, and as the Rugby pros headed back home they both stated that they were intent on returning to La Sella as soon as possible and in the meantime we can expect England to collect the Rugby World Cup in a few weeks from now.
