The production team made the long journey from India to film in the town.

Tourism Councillor Patricia Guiterrez announced that filming for movies called ‘Teri Talash’ and ‘Bandhan’, directed by Hindu filmmaker Rajoo Subramanian, well-known in India for TV Show ‘Shakti’, had taken place last week.

Scenes were shot in the Balcon de Europa and surrounding areas.

Back in 2012, and in February of the present year, the Bollywood industry also graced the streets of Nerja with a musical and movie entitled ‘Jili’.

ROMANTIC CARS CLUB: Event will draw participants and cars from every corner of Spain.

By Maria José Fernandez MOTRIL celebrates the 15th edition of the Romantic Cars of the Costa Tropical festival this weekend.

The event is scheduled to take place on

September 19 and 29, and was organised by the ‘Romantic Cars Club’ of the Costa Tropical, as well as the town council.

“The exhibition, which will take place in Plaza de la Coronacion, will draw participants and cars from every corner of Spain,

especially across Andalucia,” said David Martin, Citizens’ Participation councillor.

On Saturday, at 7.30pm, the cars will parade around Motril streets. On Sunday, the cars will also visit areas in Carchuna, Torrenueva and Calahonda.

By John Smith ALTHOUGH it is true to say that there are some tremendous galleries in both Madrid and Barcelona, there is still plenty to discover across the length and breadth of Spain.

Malaga, in the south, can boast the Picasso Museum, which contains almost 300 examples of his works.

Smaller than its big brother in Barcelona, it still offers a great deal to interest any lover of the artist.

Strong rains see 4 dead on the Costa THE death toll after the strong rains registered on Monday (September 7) in the Costa Tropical has reached four victims.

The fourth victim was found yesterday (September 9) at

around 10am in the La Rijana beach in Castell de Ferro by members of the Civil Protection volunteer team.

Three of the victims were of Lithuanian origin, with ages ranging between 41 and 63

years. According to the police, they were living inside a water pipe next to the Albuñol greenhouses area, which was completely flooded during the rains.

The three people were caught by surprise when the river over-

flowed and their bodies were dragged for a number of kilometres before they died.

“A woman was also living inside the same pipe, but she was able to save herself as she had exited the pipe a few mo-

ments before the rains started to buy food,” said Albuñol mayor.

The other victim was a 61year-old man who worked as a guard and died after taking shelter inside his car which was dragged by the water stream.

President chosen Costa Tropical THE new president of the Costa Tropical Commonwealth has been chosen. Socialist Sergio Garcia Albarce, head of the PSOE party of Almuñecar, will have control of the institution which currently comprises 19 Costa towns.

Tourism boost Nerja’s ambassador NERJA’S municipal music band has been bestowed the title of official ‘Tourism Ambassador’ of the town in an event celebrated on September 11 at the town’s Balcon de Europa.

Sexual attack Man arrested A 29-YEAR-OLD man was arrested in Motril after allegedly leaping onto a woman, putting her into his van and sexually attacking her. He is reported to have then stolen the victim’s telephone and fled the scene.

ONE of our readers based in Benajarafe had been looking for attractions to take family and visitors to and found it very difficult to obtain tickets. She drew our attention to three specific attractions and wondered whether they were simply ignoring the public and passing tickets directly to tour operators who were then benefiting financially.

The three attractions were El Caminito del Rey, Nerja Caves and the Alhambra

Palace, so we decided to check and see what we could find out.

With El Caminito del Rey there are no free spaces at all in September and there was no opportunity to book in October or later.

When an enquiry was sent to their website asking for booking information and whether tour operators received preferential treatment, the answer came back that all tickets were allocated. However they added that at some unknown date in the future,

advance booking would be open for October to December and advised us to keep checking their website.

The Nerja Caves experience was much better and we found that free tickets were available for almost any time or date in the second half of September.

At the Alhambra, you can turn up on the day and hope that you can buy tickets at the door for use on that day only for one of the many options and you have to pay cash.

If you try to book online, you have to go through Ticketmaster and pay a booking fee. They seem to have almost no availability for September. Alternatively you can purchase a tour from a tour operator.

We suspect that for the Alhambra in particular, with so many options, that it is easier for them to put the sales through a professional booking agency and as for El Caminito del Rey, they just don’t appear very well organised.

Speeding driver arrested A MALAGA City driver has been arrested for an offence against road safety after a video was posted on the internet showing him doing more than double the speed limit.

The National Police force began investigations after the 24-second video, showing a car with four people inside driving at 184 kilometres per hour, was posted on a popular social media website.

The stretch of road was identified as the A7 motorway between the city and Rincon de la Victoria, which has an 80 kph speed limit, and the four people were easily identified, the police force reported.

Woman saved from balcony OFFICERS convinced her to come in

By Maria José Fernandez LOCAL POLICE in Motril rescued a woman who was threatening to throw herself out of her home’s balcony.

Authorities were alerted at around 4pm by several witnesses to a fight between two members of the same family in a property in La Posta district. They reported she had used a chair to climb

out to the balcony’s balustrade and had expressed her intention to throw herself out.

While the police attempted to convince the woman to refrain from throwing herself, other officers accessed the balcony of a nearby home and were able to approach the woman and convince her to come inside the second property.

Diving with a scientific purpose LA HERRADURA’S diving scene is growing at a high speed as it holds an important training course.

The Mediterranean Centre of Granada University will celebrate for the first time a course in La Herradura on ‘Scientific diving techniques’.

The course will start next weekend at the sports centre in La Herradura and the diving centre ‘Openwater’, also in the Almuñecar district.

The course will be conducted by expert biologist and diver Felix Hidalgo Puertas, and will approach diving through a scientific, archaeological and preservation perspective.

Wi t h t h i s t r a i n i n g , r e searchers are expected to improve general physical diving skills and learn specific techniques which will aid them when carrying out underwater investigations.

Raising marine awareness in La Herradura TH E c ivic c e ntre in La Herradura hosted a round table event under the name ‘the marine ecosystem and the local economy’, which highlighted important issues for the future of this sector in the town.

The event, organised by the C os ta Tropic a l Friends of the Sea, with the collaboration of La Herradura Council, and the town’s Traders Association as well as other government representatives.

Discussions revolved a round inc re a s ing the amount of information available to the public on the extensive marine attractions of the town, a nd to improve the ir promotion in schools, amongst other measures.

La Herradura’s deputy mayor, Juan Jose Ruiz Joya, said the local gov-

ernment had a vested interest in recuperating a failed project to create an ‘Un-

derwater Park’, but no further information was released on the project.

DEAR Clients and Readers, It was nearly three years ago that I took on this job and have now left behind me a team of people who will always remain close to my heart. EWN became more than a job, it became a way of life which I have enjoyed immensely.

Clients became my friends, and I was privileged to enjoy countless social occasions with so many nice people that I met through work. When you socialise with someone, it helps to make it easier to understand their commercial and business expectations even when you have to cope with very tight deadlines.

I am now preparing to fly off for this new chapter in my life that will take me many miles away to sunny Dubai. Bus station almost ready for opening MOTRIL’S new bus station will be finished by December.

Delegates from the regional government in Granada visited the area this week and confirmed that the works were currently 70 per cent complete.

A champion of animal welfare Our Euro Women series is featuring women who have made a success of their lives in Spain. These outstanding ladies have been shattering glass ceilings whether in business, charity work or sports.

Stacey Lloyd Dolphin has raised awareness of animal charities.

THE first thing that draws your attention to Stacey Lloyd Dolphin is her bright blue eyes, that have probably been her biggest asset when dealing with sick and homeless animals.

Stacey is well known here in Spain and also Europe, where she works alongside animal organisations to re-home dogs and cats.

She first arrived in Spain in the early 1990s, when she and her husband Tim sailed their boat over from the Dorset coast.

The plan was to visit Spain for the summer and then head off to the Canary Islands for the winter in their boat, The Dolphin, and enjoy a life on the waves moving from port to port.

However, they fell in love with the Costa del Sol, and observing the high influx of tourists around Fuengirola Port, decided to stay and offer pleasure trips on The Dolphin.

Stacey worked hard in order to get the boat registered and insured to enable them to do this, which became a major chore, as there was no other boat operating pleasure trips in the area.

Through much determination and lots of pesetas feeding the local call box, her hard work paid off.

She managed to obtain the correct licences to offer the very first pleasure-boat trips to set sail from the port in Fuengirola.

Business was booming and The Dolphin was soon leading the waves, as others set up more boating trips to do the same.

Then Stacey received some bad news from the UK. Her dad had died and so she had to return to the UK to comfort her mother and make all the necessary arrangements.

TIRELESS ORGANISER: Stacey works hard to arrange social gatherings, raffles and sponsored activities to raise funds.

Her tenacity reaps rewards

Stacey has used her experience to set up 4 Paws, a charity which also saves animals on death row As Stacey cleared the house of her father’s belongings, she gave items to a local animal charity, which used funds raised to re-home and spay strays.

She knew then that she could do the same for the very few organisations that were operating in Spain. Stacey had seen many communities inundated with sick and abandoned animals.

Upon her return to Spain, Stacey immediately began to put projects in place to raise funds to help the few animal charities that were operating here. She also negotiated with local vets to arrange for the necessary injections, operations and neutering of the strays.

Using her organisational skills Stacey arranged social gatherings, raffles, and sponsored activities, which accelerated funds coming in. A scheduled programme

Before too long, Stacey wanted to expand and take the project even further, and

with networking, she had built up an excellent relationship with various venues which could host bigger and better events.

After meeting with the owner of the Caribbean Bar, Carvajal, and a brainstorming session with him, the obvious solution was to arrange a New Year’s Day Swim; it was the perfect location to do something big. This was to be a major fundraising event that would spiral into an annual tradition.

It is now a decade since the New Year’s Day Swim was born back in 2005, with only 15 swimmers and supporters coming to cheer them on. Every year the number of swimmers and sponsorship grew and each year the day raised an average of €5,000, one year peaking at a grand total of €7,000. These funds have gone towards programmes which enable the animals to be sent to other European countries, mainly Finland, to be adopted and find their forever homes. Stacey has since set up her own charity, 4 Paws, which also saves animals on death row at shelters, and finds owners to care for them.

She is the first up in the morning, and last to bed at night, dedicating herself to feeding programmes and airport trips in between all the events she is organising.

Stacey has made a massive difference to many animal charities with her continued hard work and energy.

Pool tender THE cleaning services tender for Torre del Mar’s indoor pool has been awarded to company Clece for a period of nine months and a total cost of €42,688, according to the council.

Beach drills NERJA’S lifeguard and surveillance service carried out several drills simulating accidents on the beaches of Chucho and Torrecilla. These are needed to obtain the Q for Quality certificate.

Clean-up THREE cleaning boats have been removing the debris dumped by recent storms from the Almuñecar and La Herradura coasts, as it represented a hazard for other craft and beach-goers.

nation towards lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transsexuals and intersexual individuals (LGBTI).

The course took place on Thursday, September 11, coinciding

with the International Day for Suicide Prevention, conducted by the Arco Iris Federation at the Local Police events hall.

Electricity scam alert BOGUS Endesa engineers gain access to rob householders

SCAM: Beware of house-callers pretending to be electrical engineers.

By John Smith ONE of our readers from Nerja has contacted us to alert everyone about another scam that appears to be taking place.

Two men claiming to be representatives of Endesa called on him and insisted that they needed to check his electrical

installation. He was shown identification which he took to be genuine - although he cannot read Spanish - and admitted them.

Whilst one of the men asked him to complete a document the other went about the premises supposedly checking the electrical installation. After the men had left, he discovered that jewellery was

missing from the bedroom. He naturally reported the theft to the Local Police who indicated that this was not the first report of this type that they had received.

Always be alert and if you are unsure of unexpected visitors ask them to return later so that you can check with their alleged employers or the police.

Parents protest against prefabs HUNDREDS of parents of pupils from the Las Naciones school in Velez-Malaga have carried out a demonstration to protest against the increase of prefabricated classrooms at the school.

A total of 350 students of the 525 enrolled in this school will have to work inside these prefabricated rooms, raising the complaints of more than 300 parents. They have hoisted signs complaining the lack of a canteen, a library, a playground, an events

hall or a computer lab. They also say the children have to eat in three shifts to fit inside the room designated for this purpose.

Spokesperson of the Save Las Naciones Platform declared that they do not believe Education Department promises to resolve the sitation and that they will continue with demonstrations during the academic year until they achieve their purpose: the construction of a proper school for their children.

Man dies in motorcycle crash on his way home from work A 37-YEAR-OLD man died on Sunday (September 13) in Velez-Malaga after falling from his motorcycle when going home from his job in Torre del Mar. The 112 emergency services reported that several witnesses alerted them to an accident in the Avenida Juan Carlos I at 5.45am. According to their statement, the

motorcycle had hit the road’s kerb and the rider had lost control of the vehicle, crashing into a tree.

FRIGILIANA and Nerja want to set up a strategic plan

Mayor of Frigiliana, Jose Antonio Gonzalez and Mayor of Nerja, Rosa Arrabal Tellez, held a meeting on Thursday (September 10), at Nerja’s plenary hall, with the goal of creating a Strategic Plan for Countryside Safety, to coordi-

nate both towns’ efforts against burglaries and thefts from fields.

Guardia Civil and Local Police representatives from both towns also attended the meeting.

The initiative, put forward

by Frigiliana’s mayor, is to put a stop to the large number of thefts in these areas which agricultural workers estimate have resulted in a loss of be-

tween 50 and 100 kilos of mangoes per week. The crop is currently being harvested from the countryside.

Both councils have committed to reduce and avoid these sorts of crimes, which have a serious detrimental impact on the lives and economy of field workers, not only as a result of the products stolen, but also the damage caused to fences and the land.

Activities planned to improve mobility in Rincon de la Victoria

LAUNCH: Councillors present ‘European Week for Mobility’.

ACCESSIBILITY for all and using environment-friendly means of transport are a priority for Rincon de la Victoria Council.

The town has joined the network of Spanish towns which will participate in the European Week for Mobility, organised by European and National institutions as an initiative by platform Do The Right Mix. The project has been designed to promote alternative means of transport besides vehicles as well as encourage

the use of public transport, cycling and walking.

It is the first time that Rincon, together with 258 other Spanish towns, will participate in the event, according to Sustainable Mobility Councillor, Pedro Fernandez Ibar, who explained that a great variety of activities will take place from September 16 to September 22, including sports, culture, informative and environment-related events.

Migrants arrive in Motril EIGHT migrants who were rescued 48 miles off the coast of Motril arrived at the town’s port, on September 11, where they received medical assistance.

Amongst them were eight men from Maghreb, Algeria, one of whom is currently being assessed to determine his age as it is believed that he could

be a minor.

The migrants were rescued by the Salvamento Maritimo (Spanish sea search and rescue services) ‘Salvamar Hamal’ vessel.

Greenhouses badly affected by storms GROWERS face a serious situation as heavy rain causes substantial damage

By Maria Jose Fernandez AFTER the heavy rains left a trail of destruction across greenhouses in Albuñol (Costa Tropical) owners now have to face the consequences.

Arrested for attempted burglary TWO men were caught redhanded by Local Police after they were spotted forcing open the door of a shop in Motril.

The events took place on Wednesday (September 9) at around 3am, when Local Police officers who were patrolling the northern area of the town reported that they had caught two men breaking into a shop.

Both were wearing helmets and fled the scene on a motorcycle when they noticed the police presence. However, they were arrested shortly afterwards.

At the scene, police found nine tools, torches, helmets, a blunt metal bar and other items.

Kitting out for school SCHOOL materials will be provided for 9,300 Malaga Province schoolchildren in need over the next few days thanks to a project by La Caixa Social Works and Malaga Provincial Council.

The campaign, presented on Thursday (September 10) by La Caixa Andalucia representative Victorino Lluch and Provincial Council head Elias Bendodo, has covered the purchase of €166,000 worth of supplies to be distributed amongst the children to ensure family problems do not affect their studies.

All supplies have been bought from local stationers and the packages contain a school bag, pencil case, exercise books, scissors, pencils, crayons, pencil sharpeners, rubbers, plasticine, pens and rulers.

More than 100 fields along the Barranco de las Angosturas stream suffered serious damage when the river burst its banks.

“Only in Albuñol, we have at least 40 hectares of greenhouses affected,

but damage in other Costa Tropical areas has not been counted yet as some of the roads were cut off and maintenance services are still retrieving waste,” said Provincial Secretary of Agriculture and Stockbreeder Associa-

tions (COAG), Miguel Monferrer.

The most worrying factor, according to Monferrer, is that not even 5 per cent of all those affected had insurance to cover the damage, which means that they have lost practically everything.

“Most owners were planting or had just finished it at the time, and were about to get insurance, as is normal practice,” said Monferrer, who continued: “But the floods have taken us by surprise.”

AFTER hitting his victim, he then stole €390 from him

By Maria José Fernandez GUARDIA CIVIL officers arrested a 19year-old man in Motril after allegedly carrying out a robbery in the area of Paseo del Altillo.

The events took place on September 7, when the alleged culprit is believed to have hit a 49-year-old man with a glass bottle after he asked for a cigarette and the man refused.

He then reportedly continued hitting the man on the floor, after which he stole €390 from him.

As a result, the victim sustained injuries to his nose and several bruises for which he had to receive treatment at an outpatient’s clinic in Almuñecar.

Several witnesses reported that the attacker was a Moroccan man who lives in the town.

He has since been taken into custody.

New sports centre opens A NEW sports centre called Up Motril has opened in the town and has some of the most modern facilities of the C o s t a Tr o p i c a l i n m o r e than 6,000 square metres.

ROAD ACCIDENTS: Ninety five per cent occur in good weather conditions.

National report on road safety in Spain (DGT) BETWEEN 2003 and 2007 over 316,600 motorbikes over 500cc were licensed in Spain.

According to Spanish statistics, motorbike riders are 17 times more likely to be injured in a road traffic accident than car drivers. In order to understand and then reduce the number of motorbike accidents, the DGT (Spanish equivalent of the DLVC) has produced a report on road traffic safety. Here we bring you the main conclusions of why these accidents occur.

WHEN DO ACCIDENTS OCCUR? Nearly 30 per cent of urban motorbike and scooter accidents happen at the weekend and the percentage of accidents resulting in death increases to 42 per cent. The highest rate occurs between 06.00h and 20.00h.

OTHER VEHICLES INVOLVED Eight one per cent of motorbike accidents involve at least one other vehicle, although the mortality rate decreases slightly when another vehicle is involved. Seventy per cent of accidents result from collisions between bikes and other vehicles. In urban areas, three out of four accidents involving bikes, also involve another vehicle.

WHY DO ACCIDENTS HAPPEN? Five factoring conditions have been taken

into consideration; traffic, road surface, atmospheric, human and accident type. In urban areas, the injury increases by 31 per cent in faster moving traffic. This means that 97 per cent of mortalities occur in fluid traffic. Ninety five per cent of accidents occur during good weather conditions. This also implies fewer motorbikes and scooters drive in bad weather.

Statistically, the conditions of the road do not significantly affect the level of accidents.

THE HUMAN FACTOR In urban areas, alcohol, and drugs increase the injury level by 170 per cent, whilst speed increases the level by 370 per cent. The report estimates that almost a third of accidents involving motorbikes and other four wheeled vehicles result from the motorbike not being seen by the driver of the car. Forty per cent of accidents in urban areas involve head-on or side collisions between bikes and cars.

KEY FINDINGS OF THE REPORT In urban areas, accidents occur at intersections involving traffic lights and roundabouts.

On roads, the majority of accidents happen when overtaking on dual carriageways and normal roads, at exits and entries, and at intersections involving stop signs and give way.

Benagalbon seafront one step closer BENAGLBON’S political representatives have asked for help to make the town’s coastal area become a tourism attraction.

Torre de Benalgabon is currently the only area of Rincon de la Victoria left without a proper built seafront, along its almost 3.5 kilometres of beaches, from the Granadillas to the Santillan Rivers as it currently only has an unpaved path.

The project for Benagalbon’s seafront has been pending for more than a year, and it is one of the main projects of the different governing teams which have graced the town’s Council during the past years.

By the end of last year, a project was drafted by the consultant company Estudio 7, in Sevilla, which priced the seafront project at almost €5 million. However, the project was met with reject by the town council and several ecological associations, as well as all the opposing political forces.

The Suarez Wetlands in Motril will celebrate on September 18 and 19, and for the first time in Spain, the ‘Night

of the Moths,’ an event to expose the great diversity and richness of the Iberian nocturnal butterflies and moths.

Council representatives explained that this event, organised by association ALAS, will be celebrated at the same time in several other points of Europe and Spain, as it was

born from an initiative by the British association Butterfly Conservation.

Area of Competa fire shows its last signs WORKS have already started to clear the area

The Competa Council has announced that, in collaboration with the Regional En-

vironment Department, a project has been designed to r et r i eve t he bur nt wood which is still present in the area after the blaze that affected a large patch of land last year.

The fire burnt down areas in the Sierra Tejeda, Almij ar a and Al ham a Nat ur al

Parks, as well as several private properties, which were located next to these protected areas.

Works have already started and are expected, according to the Junta de Andaluci a r egi onal gover nm ent experts, to be finished by October 15.

Elderly man dies getting in car A 92-YEAR-OLD man died after being run over underneath his daughter ’s car when he was stepping into the vehicle.

Authorities reported that the accident took place in Calle Neptuno (Torrox). The woman had parked the car in the street, which has a steep slope. The vehicle started moving downhill just as the man was stepping into it with the help of his daughter. The woman was able to get away but

the man was trapped between the car and its door and was dragged for about 10 metres. The injuries seemed to be minor originally. However, the man sadly died a few hours later in the Axarquia regional hospital.

Local and National Police are currently investigating if the car started moving due to faulty brakes or a mistake when applying the handbrake.

British Airways leading the way in airline world TEXTBOOK handling of a very serious aircraft emergency

By Steve Walsh ON September 8, BA flight 2276 was taking off from Las Vegas (McCarran International Airport) for Gatwick.

At about 100mph into the takeoff on runway 07L, there was a loud bang and fire broke out on the left hand engine. Captain Chris Henkey immediately aborted takeoff and told the control tower that he had an engine fire. A few seconds later he called Mayday, Mayday, told the tower he was evacuating his passengers on the runway and requested fire services. A quick-thinking female controller informed the captain that the fire services were already on their way. She had seen the severity of the fire prior to his request and “pressed the button.”

The professionalism shown by the captain was exemplary. So too was the way the tower frequency controller dealt with all her other aircraft, some close to landing and another behind the BA 2276 waiting to take off.

BA 2276: Disaster averted and lives saved.

The cockpit crew, the cabin crew of BA2276 and the shift in the McCarran tower that afternoon saved the lives of the 172

people. The number one engine had an uncontained catastrophic failure causing fire and severe structural damage to the aircraft which is now a total insurance loss.

Had the engine failed about 20 seconds later the aircraft would have been in “mustgo” mode and would have had to take off.

It is this type of professionalism that makes BA one of the world’s best airlines.

IN a statement issued by USCA - the union for air traffic controllers - on September 10, it was revealed that the second runway at Malaga airport, opened for use in 2012 was used less than 1 per cent of the time in 2014 and they forecast the same for 2015.

They suggest this lack of use causes economic losses for the airport and delays passengers, citing the fact that on September 7, during the extremely bad weather, the second runway remained closed and a number of flights were diverted to Granada and Sevilla. Often, air traffic controllers have been blamed for delays, but the union notes that more and more passengers are now using the airport, so with only one runway in operation they often have to stack incoming planes and outgoing aircraft often have long waits on the tarmac before takeoff.

The runway has been used more extensively in the past but there appears to be no plan in place if the main runway is closed. As the number of passengers to and from Malaga increases, so USCA members want to see a safe and workable plan.

Morrisons sells its loss-making division of 140 convenience stores eas of high footfall. Other supermarkets have had considerable more success with their convenience stores but Morrisons just couldn’t emulate them.

Having announced a loss before tax of £792 million (€1,07 billion) earlier this year, the company needed to review its position and even selling these stores at a loss estimated at £30 million (€41 million) has pleased the market as they were considered to be a drain on resources which diverted management from other more important tasks.

The group has also announced that it will close 11 supermarkets with a possible loss of 900 jobs as part of its recovery plan Despite the current difficulties, those who live near Gibraltar are able to see for themselves how very popular that branch of Morrisons is and it is reputed to enjoy one of the highest turnovers in the group.

AN announcement was made on September 9 advising that Morrisons would sell its loss-making M chain of 140 local convenience stores for a sum in the region of £25 million (€34 million) to a company funded

by Greybull Capital.

WE could all do with making more monetary savings and there are things you can do to reduce fuel consumption in your vehicle.

Keeping the windows closed, not carrying excess loads, keeping your speed and engine revs down all make a different to the amount of fuel your vehicle consumes: 1. Drive your car in a gentle manner avoiding excessive acceleration and deceleration.

2. Check your tyres. This should be routine practice for safety reasons.

3. Keep the engine revs steady. The most efficient levels are between 2,000 and 2,500 for petrol cars and 1,500 to 2,500 for diesels.

4. Move through the gears correctly to help maintain a controlled level of revs. First gear uses the most fuel so use that least.

5. Carrying unnecessary items can hinder the flow of air and reduce aerodynamics and

therefore increase fuel consumption, for example, an empty roof rack can increase consumption by 2 per cent and when loaded, it can increase up to 35 per cent.

6. Maintain a safe and adequate distance when driving. Managing to avoid sudden breaking and acceleration helps fuel consumption.

7. Leave the car. For journeys of less than 3km, it is cheaper to use public transport.

8. Close windows. Modern cars are designed for optimum aerodynamics, but having the windows open can reduce that effect causing drag.

9. Check the air con. Having the temperature set below 20 degrees can increase fuel consumption by 20 per cent.

10. Turn off the engine. Although it is not always practical, turning off the engine is one of the best ways of saving fuel.

SO I wake in the morning, push my elbows out and don’t feel any wood which me a ns I’ve ma de it th r ough anot her night. So we are off to a good start and that’s as far as it goes, as my day, as usual, goes downhill from there.

I love a bit of technology so I pick up my phone and decide to ask Siri (that’s the lady that lives in my iPhone) what the weather will be like today. I’ve never done this before but have been informed by reliable sources that I have to get used to voice recognition.

I’ve encountered it a few times and to be honest I don’t get on with it too well.

Or come to that with any of this automated call stuff - you know what I mean - press 1 for this, 2 for that, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 for some other option by which time I’ve forgotten what the first 3 were

so I press 9 and listen to them all again.

Eventually I hit the right number and get another message saying please have my account/phone/NIE/or whatever ready so t hey can deal wi t h m y enqui r y as swiftly as possible.

I gather up all the necessary documents so I can be swiftly dealt with and then it starts - THE MUSIC! I listen to it for a few minutes then I get a ring tone.

I think ‘aye aye’ that wasn’t too bad... then I get the automated voice - ‘Sorry we are encountering an unusually high amount of calls today but please hold as your cal l i s i m por t ant t o us.’ I s i t ? I don’t t hi nk so because i f i t was you would employ people to answer your bloody phones!!!

But I digress - back to Miss Siri. Me: “the weather today?” Siri : “This is what I know about Walter Mitty.” Me: “What ? The weat her t oday?” Si r i : “Here’s what I know about wet teddies.”

Absolute waste of time so I decide to get out of bed and use a much better and reliable system... I look out of the window. Job done!!

I would further comment that when I ran schools many owners would inform me that they had seen on TV Cesar perform some task which only took a few minutes! I was asked ‘Why if Casar can do this in a few minutes why can’t we’? The answer was simple ‘Three minutes filming can take three hours or more! I know this because I

I am from the old school and pleased that 27 years ago I took further various courses in London with John Fisher and Annette Conn and others also attending many training schools in the UK and USA, the result of which I was able to advance and educated myself to progress studying root causes of unwanted behaviour and use modern methods. One of these included using a head collar especially good for senior people that have a pet dog yanking them along

the street. The head collar changed this to pleasure and never punishment.

It is sad that many Police Service dog handlers who retire do not address the issue of training and working with pet owners which is a total different ball game. At the time of writing this I am mentoring one police officer who works in corrections (Prison) in Las Vegas and another new friend with the Sydney Police working with two dogs and they now want to study behaviour.

More should follow this example.

David the Dogman shares with you: An open letter to dog breeders Dear Breeder, I brought your puppy home today. He’s tan and he’s fuzzy and he smells good, like a puppy. The boys loved him, pestered him so much I had to make them let him rest.

They’ve named him Buddy, even though I told them his long, fancy, pedigree name.

We stopped by the vets on the way home, just like you said we should and then by the pet shop to get that food you said he should eat. We’ve got Buddy’s basket next to John’s bed, he’s the oldest and so Buddy will be his responsibility

with my help of course.

We puppy proofed the house, again this afternoon. Buddy has toys to chew, a new collar, a new leash and special food bowls. I signed up for that social class you recommended with David the Dogman all positive reinforcement!

We love him very much and he seems to like us, we’re following your instructions and promise to take good care of him. I’ll send you the pictures as soon as we get them back.

Just a couple of questions, you know how new ‘Mums’ worry, so I’d like to know:

After Bud grows up if his hips hurt him, will you explain to my boys why they can’t take him for walks?

If his elbows hurt when he goes up the stairs will you comfort him when he can’t sleep next to John any more?

If he goes blind will you teach the boys to play carefully with him so no one gets hurt?

If he pees on the floor every time we get home will you convince my husband that he still has to be an inside dog?

If he growls at other children will you help when take Buddy to school for Pet Day?

If his heart should skip one beat too many when he’s only three years old and we lose him can you bring him back?

Dear Breeder, we already love Buddy so much and I know how hard you’ve worked to produce ‘sound dogs.’ Did you do all you could? Was there some little thing that you decided just wasn’t necessary to check? You see our future happiness depends on how carefully you did this breeding because Buddy is not just a dog; he’s part of our family.

More jetting with pets WHILE in the past flying with pets was complicated and often considered an eccentricity reserved for the privileged, it is increasingly becoming an option for pet owners travelling within EU member states.

Now, Iberia has reported, more and more people are choosing to take their pets with them when they travel rather than leaving them in kennels and so far this year the Spanish airline says it has car r i ed m or e t han 29,000 pets on both domestic and international flights.

Between January and August m or e pet s f l ew wi t h Iberia than in the whole of 2014.

Dogs, cat s, t ur t l es and birds are all allowed to fly by t he ai r l i ne, pr ovi di ng t hey have al l necessar y passports, vaccinations and microchips where required.

In an aim to cater for the increasing demand for petfriendly flights and facilities, New York’s JFK airport has announced plans to r enovat e an ol d t er m i nal building to create ARK pet terminal able to house the 70,000 animals that use the airport each year.

The terminal will include an animal departure lounge with stalls, food and water for pets and a 24 hour veterinary hospital along with a gr oom i ng and m assage spa for pets feeling the need to relax and be pampered prior to take off.

September 3, 2015: The date on which Europe surrendered WE will remember this day for the rest of our lives.

This is the day we lost our civilisation. The enemy is within our gates, and more and more will pour in. We are finished. This is the end.

Or at the very least, the beginning of the end. And to think that it took just one image, one photo of a threeyear-old boy lying dead on a Turkish beach, to shatter our resolve and turn the tide.

One image was the straw that broke Europe’s back.

Bad practice I AM very disappointed at the poor management of some of our top tourist attractions.

The latest - Camino del Rey - is still showing fully booked calendars for June to September, with no availability for October onwards. Tour companies are block-booking the free time and then offering entrance as part of a paid package. These attractions should be available to all.

The same complaints are being expressed about Nerja Caves and the Alhambra Palace. It is just not good enough.

HAVE we learned nothing? Computer viruses have caused us all many nightmares over the years to the point now where they are part of life, and we just have to suffer with them causing damage and costing us money.

The way they get into the system is via a Trojan horse, something nasty hidden inside something innocent. Is it only me that sees the same thing happening with the migrant crisis at the moment? How come thousands of European people are welcoming with open arms hundreds of thousands of Middle Eastern migrants without question. Are they mad?

Don’t get me wrong, any family from anywhere that needs help should be helped, but looking at the images on TV and in the press over the last week, many thousands of the migrants are single young men, well dressed, clean shaven, carrying iPhones and wearing Reeboks. Don’t tell me that amongst the hundreds of thousands flooding in there aren’t a couple of thousand terrorists.

Islamic State and Al-Qaeda are not stupid, this has been planned, their Trojan horse has worked. Why didn’t all the migrants head south to countries that are closer to their way of life, customs and religion?

I don’t believe everything I read in the newspapers. In fact, after the phone-hacking affair, I have an extremely poor opinion of all journalists. This is endorsed every week when I read your articles. You are such a hypocrite. You pillory the mainstream press, then you produce incredulous conspiracy theories dragged up from extremely dubious sources.

Why should anyone believe what

you write? You are no different from the people you are slating.

As far as I’m concerned the reality is you are actually doing exactly what all journalists do, which is creating stories and manipulating information that will be read in order to sell newspapers. The only difference is that they are in places like Fleet Street and you are in some backwater in Spain.

I like to read the newspapers despite the fact that I take a lot of what I read with a pinch of salt.

Having stated that, the first thing I turn to every week is Mike, as I

can’t wait to see what fairy tale conspiracy he will dig up next.

School agony HAVING just been through the mixed emotions of the start of another new school year, I can’t help wondering whether teachers in this country put parents (seemingly mothers particularly) through as much agony as possible where books and materials

are concerned in subconscious revenge for having to put up with our little darlings all morning for the next nine months.

This year my daughter, who is almost 10 and has started Year 5 at primary school, was issued with a list of stationery supplies, all of which had to be named. Yes, all. Every single pencil, eraser, felt-tip pen had to be labelled, teacher insisted. Why? Does it really matter who uses which pencil and are we not just encouraging children to rely on us conveniently naming everything for them rather than making sure they know where their stuff is?

Also this year all primary students have been issued with new textbooks by the regional government. All free, supposedly. Yet how come parents have to take their cheque-libro and order the books, wait for months for them to turn up, spend time and petrol on never-ending trips to see if they’ve arrived. Then on top of it all, we have to spend money on plastic covers for these so-called free books. Not to mention the aggro to get the plastic covers on!

Seventeen books later, I have to share a tip: whatever you do, don’t try and use the sticky plastic or you will find the will to live disappears long before the pile of books is covered.

El Borge celebrates its raisins EL BORGE, the Axarquia’s quintessential raisin producer, celebrates as every year its ‘Raisin Day’ on September 20.

This popular festivity, which marks its 20th anniversary this year, is centred in the promotion of this vital product that has such an important role in the town’s economy.

During the event, which starts at 12pm, visitors will be able to witness exhibitions on the production, as well as the traditional way of transporting the raisin: inside big baskets on the vintner’s head.

The good news is that Fogon del Pibe is serving up some of the best steaks on the coast and the sparkling reviews from the most discerning diners are ever increasing. This treasure of a restaurant is the ultimate in Argentinian style dining.

Matias, and his staff take pride in their food preparation and presentation which has attracted many groups and families to eat there besides those individuals who are connoisseurs of a good steak. The method of cooking the meats is mastered by Matias himself, and it is always a good sign when the owner is at the forefront of his wares, as the passion and care that goes into the making is always very noticeable in the results. The BBQ is located at the foot of the restaurant where the diner can watch Matias show off his culinary skills.

The extensive menu reflects an understanding of personal choice as there is something to suit all ages and nationalities. For starters there are some very tasty and imaginative combinations including Empanadas Argentinas (Argentinian patty), Rulo de Cabra con cebolla caramelizada (goat’s cheese with caramelised onions) and their very own special Gazpacho soup. If you want to try a varied selection to start with, there is a ‘Tabla de tapas’ offering up to eight different starters and is perfect for group sharing.

Fogon del Pibe serve the very best Novillo Argentino. The service to the table is excellently delivered complete with a table top grill to maintain the temperature of the selection of meats.

The 800gram steak is a favourite along with the Creole Kebab and Goucho Roast Ribs. Besides the first class meat dishes there are lots of salad and side dishes, or savoury pancakes, pasta dishes and mixed grills that serve up to four people.

The choice extends to a more international cuisine with the presence of seasonal vegetables, spaghetti Bolognese, breaded chicken and much more. What is also very helpful about the menu is that suggestions are given to which dishes and sauces complement each other, so all you have to do is relax and enjoy your meal.

Every detail has been thought through, prepared by the chef, and creatively placed on the plate.

The postres and sweet menu reflects the same quality as the above dishes both in flavour, creativity and presentation. The young or sweet toothed diner will be delighted to see the choice of Flamed Pancakes, Chilled Custards, Brownies and other treats, so dessert lovers can really indulge.

UNLESS miracles occur, which I very much doubt, I fear today to write Europe’s obituary. The shameful end of Europe, overrun by non-Europeans and collapsing in economic chaos, betrayed by its leaders, has possibly reached the point of no return. This is just the start.

Then in my 30’s I could not close the pages on this prophetic witness to Europe’s doom. You could purchase this book only ‘under the counter’ despite the fact that in France it was a bestselling award-winning novel.

A MONTH ago exactly I was amazed by two newspaper articles, one in the Daily Mail and the other in the EWN. The first described the £116 million (excluding handling charges of £22 to £40 per authorised order) of gluten free junk food being provided by NHS doctors on prescription which include custard creams, doughnuts and pizzas in spite of the UK’s obesity crisis. The second recommended that we eat liquorice allsorts to achieve the 14mg a day of iron intake recommended by the EU. The first flabbergasted me when the home growing of beneficial fruit and vegetables is so widespread in the UK compared to Spain.

The latter reminded me that as a child I was often given in war-time England a stick of

liquorice from a liquorice plant for its blood improving benefits and in Spain the plants were often grown on allotments surrounding the coastal villages.

Indeed in some areas along the coast, including the Segura valley in Alicante Province,

liquorice now grows wild between irrigated fields. May be the liquorice sticks still chewed

by Spanish children come from that area.

This need for iron and the fact that a diet of processed foods can result in iron deficiencies unless iron additives

Will they give them full rights and benefits to remain permanently? It isn’t enough just to give monetary donations.

And America, the first in the conflict zone, what is it doing to help?

Why aren’t some of its ships in the Med transporting some of the displaced to safety?

But for words of wisdom on the subject, maybe we should turn to former US vice-presidential candidate, Sarah Palin.

By Tony Myles THE Continental Wealth Management Annual Golf Day at La Sella enjoyed an extra celebrity element last week, as Phil de Glanville and Matt Perry were special guest competitors.

Both Phil and Matt have enjoyed an exceptional career in Rugby for England and Bath, having gained over 70 international caps between them.

With the Rugby World Cup just a few days away it was a splendid coup for Continental Wealth Management to secure these guys,

CELEBRITY GUESTS: Phil de Glanville and Matt Perry. even though it was for a flying visit, and everyone who had a opportunity of meeting them, expressed real appreciation for their friendly and informal manner and their great sense of humour.

Despite having a late night the

previous evening, due to delayed flights and a few small beers, both men were remarkably fresh when they teed off just after 1 o’clock, surrounded by a host of spectators and fans.

Just a week previously the heav-

ens had bestowed up us the muchlonged-for rain and so the course was even more demanding than normal with less run on the ball and slightly longer growth on the fairways. So extra credit must go to those who played remarkably well and some commiserations to the many who didn’t.

The golf day extended into the evening and everyone moved across to the Marriott poolside where the caterers were waiting with an enormous BBQ. Speeches were made, winners were applauded and a large sum was raised on behalf of Grant-A-Wish. This is the local charity that benefits from many events organised by Continental Wealth Management and on this occasion they were delighted to receive in excess of €2,200.

So who won?

Late nights, several beers, very little sleep were exactly the ingre-

dients that Matt Perry needed in order to score 42 points and playing off a handicap of 13. His companion Phil de Glanvillle was also worthy of note in seventh place with 34 points.

As Continental Wealth Management were picking up the bill for the entire event we must also mention their CEO, Anthony Downs, who came a close second with a very credible 40 points and a handicap that will suffer from a degree of adjustment in future events.

It was an excellent day which ran smoothly throughout thanks to the team at CL GOLF, and as the Rugby pros headed back home they both stated that they were intent on returning to La Sella as soon as possible and in the meantime we can expect England to collect the Rugby World Cup in a few weeks from now.
