Police had earlier surrounded the café in Calle Duque de Ahumada, at about
11am, after they’d received a call from a woman saying that her husband, Gustavo Sanchez Pastor, aged 37, had barricaded himself inside a café with a shotgun and was threatening to commit suicide if his demands were not met. Pastor has since been given a €1,146 fine by the Superior Court of Justice for crimes against public order. In an interview with the Spanish daily newspaper SUR, Sanchez Pastor ex-
plained that the siege was motivated by a series of conflicts he has been experiencing with the residents of the Puerto Rico building, below which the café is located. “I never thought about taking my own life while inside the bar, it was only a call for attention,” he said. “In fact, the shotgun did not work at all,” he continued: “I was really scared Turn to Page 2
