Police had earlier surrounded the café in Calle Duque de Ahumada, at about

11am, after they’d received a call from a woman saying that her husband, Gustavo Sanchez Pastor, aged 37, had barricaded himself inside a café with a shotgun and was threatening to commit suicide if his demands were not met. Pastor has since been given a €1,146 fine by the Superior Court of Justice for crimes against public order. In an interview with the Spanish daily newspaper SUR, Sanchez Pastor ex-

plained that the siege was motivated by a series of conflicts he has been experiencing with the residents of the Puerto Rico building, below which the café is located. “I never thought about taking my own life while inside the bar, it was only a call for attention,” he said. “In fact, the shotgun did not work at all,” he continued: “I was really scared Turn to Page 2

Junta confirms aid THE Junta de Andalucia regional government is to spend €340,000 on emergency works on the 2,147 hectares burnt down in Lujar in July. Head of the regional Environment Department, Jose Fis-

By Nicolas Thienpont RESIDENTS have spent all summer complaining about the noise caused by the ‘botellon’ street drinking party currently located in the municipal pool car park. It was originally situated there to give young people a space to drink and socialise without disturbing the peace

and the well-being of the residents or dirtying the city. However, Motril Council has now decided to put an end to the complaints by finding a more suitable place to relocate it to. Ideally, the new location should be accessible on foot, thus preventing drink-driving and should be far enough away from residential buildings that the

noise, racket and rubbish left by the ‘botellon’ will not affect any residents or be the subject of complaints. Motril Council has affirmed that it will continue monitoring the street party, not by constant police surveillance but by campaigns focused on giving young people other leisure alternatives and trying to reduce the number of ‘botellones’ celebrated as a whole.

Commerce and Tourism department led by Rafael Cabellero, more than 50 tourists used these services, either for information requests or to file official reports after having fallen victim to a crime. In July and August, a

Guardia Civil and Local Police officer remained permanently in this office, located in the La Najarra palace. In addition, the service was aided by the help of interpreters who translated to French, German, English and Arabic.

“Our main goal was to permanently increase safety in tourism areas,” said Mr Caballero. “The safety of our residents and visitors is one of the main priorities for the local government,” said Mayor Trinidad Herrera.

Police officer to appear before judge A LOCAL POLICE officer in Velez-Malaga is facing an 18-month prison sentence and an €11,340 compensation for allegedly hitting a man in the groin to subdue him before arresting him.

The man who allegedly suffered the attack, and two other friends are also facing a two-year sentence for attacking the police officer and his colleague. The events took place in January of 2011,

when the man was smoking a cigarette in a bar. Local Police requested his ID to fine him. The man was grabbed by his two friends before officers could put him in the patrol car, which resulted in a major brawl.

Tutti Frutti square row rumbles on CLUB and pub-owners want to bring back music By Maria José Fernandez CLUB and pub-owners in Nerja’s Plaza Tutti Frutti continue in their efforts to bring back music and terraces to the square, helped by the local opposition party. The Partido Popular (PP) in Nerja has put forward a motion requesting the Junta de Andalucia regional government to modify the law that regulates outdoor, public shows and other activities of a similar nature in the Andalucian Community. PP representative Jose Miguel Garcia said during a plenary session held this

After that, all businesses with a club or pub licence were requested to close down to comply with a Junta de Andalucia regional government regulation, which did allow cafés and bars to retain their outside terraces.

All blues at the second festival ACCORDING to Muddy Waters, ‘the blues had a baby and they named it 'rock and roll.’ But it was all blues at the second Festival of Blues held in the Herradureno Castle Gardens on August 28 and 29. Despite the fact there had been an early announcement that entry was free when in fact there was a charge of €10 per day or €15 for both days, there doesn’t appear to have been any drop in numbers. With scorching sets from El Oso de Benalúa, El Trío del Saco and SBMA Band on the first night and Joaquin Sanchez, Howlin’ Monkeys and Beiztegui & Los Culpables on the second, the audiences had plenty of talent to enjoy. Round table talks at La Herradura THE Asociacion Amigos del Mar has organised a ‘mesa redonda’ (round table) on September 9 at the mayor’s office in the Centro Cívico, La Herradura, which will be hosted by the mayor of La Herradura. BALLOT: Residents have voted on the town’s insignia.

The townsfolk have spoken... A NEW coat of arms and flags have been decided upon By Maria Jose Fernandez THIS year marks the 200th anniversary of Alfarnate’s independence from Velez-Malaga, which took place in 1815, and the town is commemorating this special event in a unique way. As the Euro Weekly News reported at the end of July, this Axarquia town was to hold a referendum to allow all residents of the town decide which coat of arms and flags the town will use after decades of being represented by symbols which held no significance to the village, created in the 80s. Now the town has spoken, and the design chosen has been the one which depicts the main town hall building, constructed in the 16th century. In addition, the new coat of

arms shows a river which flows through the urban centre and a mountain, referencing the mountain ranges which surround Alfarnate. On the other hand, the flag is two thirds green and the other one is yellow and green representing the traditional Andalucian colours, and yellow to honour the cereals which were the main source of income for the town for centuries. According to the Mayor Salvador Urdiales, it was an historian who studied the complex history of Alfarnate to create a unique, historically accurate design. The council will now present the new symbols to the Junta de Andalucia regional government for its approval so that they can be officially considered as the pictorial representation for Alfarnate.

Council jobs for poorer residents A NEW social inclusion plan launched by the Junta de Andalucia regional government and the local government will allow Velez-Malaga Council to employ 96 residents of the town who are at risk of social exclusion. The project has a total budget of €309,916 paid for by the regional government, and a €17,136 contribution by the council. The contracts will be made for a period of three months, and include positions for street and beach cleaning, pest control, maintenance of parks and gardens as well as administrative jobs.

Top spot on drug use list ANDALUCIA sits at the top of the list in the number of people caught consuming drugs in public spaces in Spain. More than a quarter, 26.9 per cent, of all penalties issued in Spain for drug use in public or possession were given out in Andalucia. This report, part of figures released in the Annual Statistics by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, collected information from 2014, and showed that Andalucia registered 44,440 sanctions. Within Andalucia, Malaga was the province responsible for the biggest number of sanctions, with 17.9 per cent of the total (7,997).

Motril stands against domestic violence SO far this year, 25 women have already been murdered By Maria José Fernandez MAYOR of Motril, Flor Almon, together with other Council representatives held a moment of silence on Sunday (August 30), to condemn the many recent episodes of violence against women and to mourn together with the victims’ relatives. During the solemn event, held in the Plaza España, Mayor Almon described the month of August as “terrible” due to the many dead women registered, saying: “We have not recovered from one episode when, unfortunately, we are communicated another one has taken place.” The last was registered on Saturday (August 29) in Noalejo (Jaen) when a 48-yearold woman from Granada was allegedly stabbed by her husband who then took his own life. “We need to end this scourge and continue working with public institutions to prevent more cases happening,” said the mayor, and continued: “All women who are

Business about to get easier CREATING a new business is about to get easier in Rincon de la Victoria. The first municipal act for the performance of commercial activities in the town has been put forward by the local government. “This new law’s goal is to boost business activity in the town, as well as facilitate the creation of new commercial activities, and improve services in the town,” said the mayor, Encarnacion Anaya. The main points of the new regulation will be eliminating unnecessary administrative restrictions that affect the creation of new businesses, in the commercial, and industrial sectors amongst others. In addition, the town council reported that paperwork has been made easier as it can be performed online now. It is expected the new proposal will come into force in the last three months of 2015.

Turning negatives into positives Our Euro Women series is featuring women who have made a success of their lives in Spain. These outstanding ladies have been shattering glass ceilings whether in business, charity work or sports. Maria Wilson is dedicated to helping cancer sufferers. MARIA WILSON is a force to be reckoned with. Having survived cancer on numerous occasions, she has turned what were some of the darkest days of her life in to a positive experience as she helps others with their own cancer battles and throws herself into her fundraising efforts as President of the AECC, (Asociation Espanola Contra el Cancer,) Orihuela Costa branch. It was in 2010 when Maria discovered she had another battle on her hands but she believes someone was watching over her the day she decided to go for a mammogram test. Being at Torrevieja Hospital in February 2010 for another appointment, she put her name down for a mammogram. “Something inside me said to do it and I filled in the form and thank God I did,” she recalled. Within days she was called for the test which found a lump and very quickly she was having a biopsy and being told lumps had been found in three places and that she had an aggressive form of cancer. The news was hard to digest for Maria, who said there was no history of breast cancer in her family, and had already battled cancer over 20 years before when she spent two years fighting the disease and learning to walk again as a tumour was removed from her buttock and uterus. She underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy following surgery to remove her breast. “It was a long process and I had to learn to live with it psychologically. I was having regular cat scans when my tumour of 20 years ago was found to be grow-

It was a secondary cancer which had lain dormant but had grown 16cm in a year.” Facing chemo once again, she admitted: “I was proud of my appearance and it was very hard facing losing my hair again.” Rather than dwelling on her condition after undergoing cancer treatment not once, but three times, Maria threw herself into fundraising. She founded Maria and The Pink Ladies, an army of hard-working ladies, who raise funds for the AECC cancer charity, of which Maria is now Orihuela Costa Branch President, which helps fund their research and early screening programmes. Since 2010, Maria and The Pink

therapy. “The charity work has helped me to not dwell on my own problems, but I am human and there are times when it does affect me emotionally and psychologically but ultimately it makes

me stronger and I get satisfaction in knowing I’m helping others. The best period of my life is now,” Maria said. She continued: “When you are younger, it is different; you want to enjoy life to the full but you are enjoying it for yourself, it’s more selfish. Now I feel different and get a wider satisfaction in helping others. Even if I’m in pain, this is how I see my life, helping others and one day I’d like to write a book to help and inspire other women with cancer.” In the next five years Maria is not going to rest on her laurels, she wants to see the charity get bigger and better as they work to raise funds and also awareness about early detection tests, including the mammogram screening that ultimately gave her an early diagnosis of breast cancer and saved her life. However, she would also like to see others come forward, leading the charity in her name perhaps as she finally gets round to writing the book that she dreams of whilst getting to travel more. Malaga launches new website for birdwatchers TWITCHER tourism seems to be alive and kicking in the Axarquia region, with enthusiastic birdwatchers flocking to the area. The Malaga Province boasts some of the best destinations for bird enthusiasts who, in the past few years, have chosen various different coastal and inland areas to catch a glimpse of some beautiful species. A new website has been launched by the Malaga Provincial Council, Birding Malaga, available at www.birdingmalaga.es, offering routes, watching points and tourist services, as well as information on different kinds of birds that can be spotted in the area, its habitats and recommended periods of the year to do so.

Trams to return WORK ongoing on tramlines in Velez-Malaga

REPAIRS NEEDED: The service has been out of action for three years. By Maria Jose Fernandez VELEZ-MALAGA hopes to get its trams back in service soon. The town council is putting the finishing touches across the tram railways, which saw service interrupted around three years ago. The six kilometres of tracks, which connect various points in Velez-Malaga, from the train station to the San Andres Church, located in Torre del Mar, is undergoing a comprehensive series of cleaning work as well as repairs of damages.

Transport and Cleaning councillor, Marcelino Mendez-Trelles, explained that these works were being carried out by a total of six maintenance workers from the company Althenia, as the first stage before being able to determine how much money would be spent on repairs and how long it would take until the service could be resumed. Residents of the town have been asked to avoid parking their vehicles on the tracks to facilitate the workers’ activities.

New wheels for Motril police THE Motril mayor, Flor Almon, accompanied by the head of Public Safety, Maria Angeles Escameza, has just presented the Motril Local Police Department with a brand new fleet of eight patrol cars, one unmarked police vehicle and a van used for police statements and reports. These new cars are modern and fully equipped, more aerodynamic than their predecessors and with brighter, lighter and more stylised lighting. Almon said the new additions to the force had been wellreceived: “The whole police force is happy and proud to receive the new fleet of vehicles and this will facilitate their work and improve their efficiency.” The total vehicle count available for use by the department is now at 11 patrol cars, all of which are Citroën C4 Picassos, one Nissan Pathfinder, and one Citroën Jumpy van, which is used as an unmarked police vehicle for taking statements.

The change of itinerary of cruise companies has delayed the arrival of cruise ships to Motril, which had expected to receive these humongous boats by autumn, as opposed

to the high influx traditionally seen in spring. According to information released by Motril Port authorities, the ‘Nieuw Amsterdam’ is to arrive in Motril in October with 2,106 passengers. Last year, this same boat visited the town in April. Other giant ships such as the

Despite the change of dates, it is expected the number of visitors that arrive aboard cruise ships this year will be similar to those in 2014.

OFFICERS of the Local Police arrested a man that was selling hashish and marihuana at 3.00am, on Friday August 28, on Calle Doctor Ferran (Nerja). Officers reported that they: spotted three young men talking loudly trying to sell what seemed to be drugs and asked them to identify themselves. Two of the suspects did so without opposition but one of them refused to do so. As a result of this police demanded that he empty his pockets, which he did with no hesitation. But it was while his friends distracted police officers that he started throwing objects that turned out to be small packets of drugs that he had stashed in a belt pouch concealed under his shirt, which also contained a substantial amount of cash. Police officers proceeded to arrest the culprit but he resisted violently and another patrol was needed to be called in to help. He was finally arrested for alleged crimes against public health, resisting authority and assaulting police officers, and at 7.00am was turned in to the Guardia Civil in Nerja, where he was brought before a judicial authority.

Youth anti-smoking campaign returns for new term at Motril’s schools THE campaign ‘Youths Without Smoke’, launched by the Social Services Department of Motril Council, will be resumed in September at several schools in the town.

THE Velez-Malaga clean point will be receiving a mobile analysis station to measure the air quality of the area. The Velez-Malaga Environmental councillor, Marcelino MendezTrelles, stated that “quality tests will continue to be carried out until mid-September and start again at the end of the year”. The objective of these studies is to assess air quality in the different times of the year and to compare it to the results yielded by tests carried out in other provinces. All these values are then monitored in real time by the 24-hour service provided by the Environmental Quality Data Centre, which will inform the population if at any point their health is at risk or certain parameters are not adhered to.

Low wages and expensive medicine in Andalucia ANDALUCIA is having a hard time getting through this crisis that has already been going for nearly 10 years. Nearly 5 per

cent of its population can’t pay for the medicine prescribed to them by their doctor. The measures taken by the

Public Administration and the consequences of the crisis on the wages and the quality of life have gone to such an extent that a lot of people have to decide if they want to buy medicine or be able to eat the next day. In some cases, citizens who have witnessed this sad situation have voluntarily paid for the medicines, or pharmacists have overlooked part of the price and lost out on a transaction to help those most unfortunate pull through these times of need. The impact is greater on treatments that require two or more types of medicine, and specifically on pensioners and the unemployed population. Finally, when studying the number of unopened medicines people have at home in their first aid kits, the surprising figure of 10.2 per cent of the population in Andalucia confess to having between five and 10 stored away for future use or due to a change in treatments.

A BELGIAN-AMERICAN fugitive wanted in connection with the trafficking of blood diamonds was arrested at Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport on Friday (August 28). He was picked up by National Police officers under a European Arrest Warrant issued by the Belgian authorities. The 64-year-old businessman is the first person to be arrested on suspicion of trading blood diamonds - illegal gems used to finance the brutal civil war in Sierra Leone in the 1990s, in which more than 50,000 people died. He is accused of using slave labour to mine for diamonds in Sierra Leone, then of trafficking the stones to Liberia, where the former president Charles Taylor, now in jail for his role in war crimes in the conflict, used them to fund a rebel army back in Sierra Leone.

IT has been a game of two halves for the Great British Pound (GBP) versus the Euro in August. GBP started the month sitting nicely at 1.40 and on the back of positive UK inflation feedback GBP managed to squeeze higher to 1.43. At the time, the thought process was that higher inflation would shorten the time-span to a UK interest rate rise. The Pound rallied and the Euro was pushed lower. In addition there was expectation that the US would look to raise interest rates this year and that this could be as soon as September. This allowed USD strength against the Euro and in turn helped the Pound to maintain good levels against the Euro. Fast forward to the 26th August and the Pound was down 4 per cent from the highs of the month.

RALLY: Fallout in equities has supported the Euro in the latter half of August. So what happened? The move is directly related to the bloodbath in Chinese equity markets which has in turn tripped into global equity and FX markets. The People’s Bank of China has

responded to the sharp sell-off in equities and the weaker growth feedback by cutting interest rates and weakening the value of the CNY. Whether this sell-off will stabilise or catalyse is a key

question. For FX markets the response has been to buy the Euro and the Japanese Yen on any fallout in equities and this has supported the Euro rally in the latter half of August. Feedback from Germany was positive with GDP rising and the IFO survey posting a good reading. In particular the Euro has rallied against the USD and this is due to a much lower chance that the Federal Reserve will move on interest rates in the near term given the fallout from China. The Euro has rallied a massive six cents against the USD in the latter half of August. So what can we expect moving forward? Well, the situation in China is far from clear and all eyes will be on the People’s Bank and its ability to stabilise the markets. A further sell-off could help the Euro, whereas a recovery from the lows should see the Euro shed some of its gains. Looking outside of the stock market turmoil and focusing on the central banks we are likely to see the US delay a rate hike until next year and similarly the UK may also delay their lift-off. This should favour the Euro in the short term.

Strike call threat to airports IN an effort to ensure that the increase in passenger numbers to and from Spain is 2015 continues into next year, the government has announced that it will be giving airports a number of incentives with the hope and expectation of opening new routes to increase passenger footfall even more. However, it’s one step forward and one step back - just after the Malaga baggage handlers strike was called off - as three unions, CCCO, UGT and USO, have called for stoppages at Menzies Aviation Ibérica, which manages the check-in services at various airports. Many of the low-cost airlines including some from UK are likely to be affected with the first strike due to take place on September 4 at Madrid Barajas. If no agreement is reached, then the strikes will escalate and will include Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga and Mallorca.

FANCY a career in acting but too hard to get into? Try going into business instead. It is much the same thing. In business, when dealing with clients, it is your alter ego that will do much of the work for you. In business for 25 years, I had little choice but to wing it. During that quarter of a century, I lived on my wits and I survived. Business, like many other careers, is a broad forum. My forte appeared to be in selling. However, I was never a one-man-band. I was also a retailer, publisher, doorknocker and business doctor. Common sense suggests that popular theatre artistes can’t always be full of sparkle. Like the rest of us they too have their bad hair days. An impending performance must be the last thing they need. The show must go on and so must selling when your income depends on it.

MUCH THE SAME: A career on stage or in business.

Every salesperson knows the feeling: exhausted, dispirited, it is late and you have one more appointment. You know you’re going to be on ‘stage’ for at least two hours, maybe longer. If you are the kind of person who wears his heart on his sleeve then selling is not for you. How often my shoulders sagged when, after knocking, I waited for the door to open. As the door opened my face lit up. Immediately filled with passion I warmly greeted my client. With boundless enthusiasm I learned all about his trade. To my credit I must say I did so with genuine interest. It was more important to me that he does well than I succeed. I think this came across and it paid dividends. Although I had pitched the benefits of my service more times than Phantom of the Opera runs, I presented my service with evangelistic enthusiasm. This paid well, too. My advice is, if you can sell, choose a product or service you genuinely believe in. If you don’t believe what your tongue says, then your client won’t either.

Have the confidence to say: “Show me the money because I’m worth it” Loose change Jane Plunkett A look at finance for females A LOT of news has been whirling around recently about the gender pay gap, highlighting how women often receive salaries that are not equal to those of men doing the same job. Female bosses work for free 100 minutes a day because they earn 22 per cent less than male managers, according to a new study from the UK. So if you tot this up, it adds up to 57 days of ‘free’ work a year. Many reasons have been quoted as to why women are not getting their fair share, and these reasons include old-fashioned sexism and a general sense that a woman’s work is not as worthy as a man’s. But sometimes a woman can be the instrument of her own downfall, too. For example,

research shows us that women in general are not as likely to put themselves forward for a promotion or ask for

a pay rise, for the simple reason that they’re more likely to work part-time, freelance or on flexible contracts,

which means asking for what they want often has to be balanced with job security. Because a woman might have secured a job that allows her to attend to her family at the same time, she often feels that she is not entitled to rock the boat and ask for better pay or a promotion. This type of thinking does not help to secure a bright future for any female in the workplace. It ultimately also has to do with confidence and a value of self-worth. For example, I have a professional friend who is frequently asked to speak at events. She often does so and when she is told there is no pay for speaking, just ‘exposure’, she still humbly agrees. But if the event is charging people to enter, the least they can do is pay a fee to their speakers for all the time and preparation needed to speak at the event. If you want other people to respect your time, remember you first have to respect it yourself.

OTHERS THINK IT MORE than three years ago, when ISIS was on the march, it struck me that such was the speed and success of their early onslaughts, their troops and armaments had to be seriously stretched and spread out. To me it was obvious that, at that point they were not only highly dangerous, but also at their most vulnerable. Subsequently I suggested that before they had time to organise and regroup they should immediately be hit with all the air power the allies could muster. Well the pussy cats in power did precisely nothing. ISIS is now so ‘dug in’ it will take two things to shift them. One is a vast international ground force, armed with the very latest in technology and equipment (including limited nuclear) along with an unrelenting bombardment from the air. Alternatively, engage them in a round-the-table IRA style ‘negotiation’. Which brings me to another piece I wrote at around the same time. In it I suggested we

withdraw all our forces from the Middle East and use them to strengthen our own borders. We then wait for the victors to emerge (not necessarily ISIS) and then open negotiations.

These people are not silly. Despite their Jihadist intentions they know that sooner or later they are going to have to deal with the West (someone has to buy their oil). Meanwhile, to accommodate the large numbers fleeing the war zones, we build large holding camps across Europe. These camps should offer fair accommodation, medical facilities and a department similar to a citizens’ advice bureau advising and issuing permits for refugees on how to work and reside legally in the countries allocated. Without our interference there would be no excuse for terrorist attacks on our home soil and sooner or later, without more loss of allied lives, peace should finally prevail. Dream on, Leapy. Cold weather makes it more difficult for an already weakened battery to hold its charge. Storing your car in a garage during spells of cold weather will help make it easier to charge.

Charging your battery The type of charger you own is important in the safety of charging your vehicle’s battery. It is safer and better for your battery to opt for the slow charging method. A fast charge increases the potential of overcharging your battery and can create permanent damage. Replacement and recycling Your local garage or recycling centre will take your old car battery, usually for a small fee, as it is illegal to dispose of your car battery in the usual way with household waste due to its toxic nature. If it is still in reasonable condition, it may be reconditioned for use or its components melted down for use in the future. Keeping your car battery fully charged means your battery will have a longer lifespan and use energy more efficiency. Remember, the first time your car doesn’t start straight away, it is a warning that you will need to replace your battery.

EVERYONE who knows me will agree I have a great sense of humour and I’m pretty good with some witty one liners… but apart from that I am a serial complainer! The joke is if you say anything to these idiots, who only think of themselves and don’t realise how hard it is to get a wheelchair out of a car in a normal space, they all look at you like “so what?”. The best is “I’m only going to be five minutes.” I have also had “I’ve got a bad leg.” Ladies - having a baby is not a disability. Just

ANTHROPOMORPHISM is the word that is used when we believe dogs have the same feelings and emotions as humans and that they understand our language. A mistaken belief, of course. Dogs are not small, fur-clad human beings. They are canines. True, they are man’s best friend because their natural instincts and hierarchical society blend into our own, and they show loyalty and devotion to the hand that feeds them. This bonding between man and dog happened thousands of years ago when both man and wolf lived similar nomadic lives as hunters roaming the land. The dog’s adaptation to our way of life was accelerated by man using selective breeding to develop the most desirable features, first to work for us and then as pets. There remain, of course, fundamental differences between us and our dogs: dogs live totally in the present moment. They do not worry about the past nor dream about the

Taking care of exotic pets THE more unusual of animals kept as pets are known as nondomestics or exotics. Examples include snakes, terrapins, lizards, scorpions and frogs. The RSPCA have concerns about the welfare of these animals when kept as pets, due to how difficult it can be to meet their needs. Exotic pet species, as wild animals in captivity, have the same needs as they do in the wild, linked to a specialist environment, diet or behaviour. It can be challenging to look after them properly. The RSPCA are opposed to the trade in wild-caught animals. Some exotic species, such as primates, should never be kept as pets as they have complex needs that can’t be met in a home environment. We would urge anyone considering an exotic pet to find

out as much as possible about the animal’s needs and whether it is a realistic pet for you. Consider: How long the animal will live and how large it will grow. What it eats and how much. What environment the animal needs. Many exotics require a carefully-controlled environment, or they may become sick and even die. The environment must allow for natural behaviour like burrowing, climbing or basking. Size of enclosure - this is likely to increase as the animal grows! Should the animal be kept alone or with others? Is there an exotics vet nearby who can treat the animal if it becomes sick?

MAN’S BEST FRIEND: But a dog is not a fur-clad human being. future. They are not endowed with imagination or feel grief, hate, jealousy or greed. They do have a high sensory ability which is often mistaken for a kind of sixth sense. They will understand that certain words like sit, stay, down require the right reaction if they are to be rewarded with a tit-bit or praise. They will understand whether your tone of voice and facial expressions are good or bad when you are talking to them, but they will not understand longer phrases.

We often attribute human emotions to dogs when, in fact, they are reacting instinctively. We assume our dog is happy to see us when we return home and it looks pleased and wags its tail. All it is doing is reacting in the same way a wolf puppy reacts when the pack returns from a hunt. So please do not attribute dogs with human emotions. Try, instead, to understand their simple canine minds, which are untroubled by so many of our emotions.

The Andalucian Hound: has been known since ancient times THIS breed of dog is commonly known as a Podenco Andaluz and is very similar to the Ibizan Hound, and they have been seen in paintings within caves where people lived in ancient times. Spanish farmers are known to use them for hunting or guarding the land. The Podenco comes with three types of coat, wire- haired, long-haired, and smooth-haired. They have excellent sight, hearing and smell which make the larger ones ideal as watchdogs and the smaller breed for seeking out vermin. The Podenco also makes a good pet as they are intelligent and quick to learn.

What you should not feed your dog ALTHOUGH we all like to give our little furry ones a treat now and again, left-over dinner or treats that we have in our kitchen cupboards may be unsuitable or even dangerous to give to pets. Some may think it is humorous to give their pet alcohol, but this can cause seizures, low blood sugar, arrhythmias, coma, or even death. Avocado can be fatal especially the skin, seed and the bark which contains persin that causes severe vomiting and diarrhoea. Never give bones from fish or poultry as they are small and they shatter and can get stuck in the throat. Onion and garlic

can damage blood cells, cause anaemia and also fits. Others among these foods are mushrooms, raw eggs, salt, rhubarb leaves, and some hops.

A tremendous response to a family medical emergency I HAVE had family over on holiday. A friend of my granddaughter was taken ill on August 25 after 11pm and because of her condition I had to call for an ambulance. The whole service from then was fantastic, within 10 minutes an ambulance arrived with three medical personnel. They stabilised the young girl and called for a second ambulance. This arrived again within minutes; she was taken to Torrevieja Hospital. There she was promptly seen by the hospital staff and she remained overnight for observation and then allowed home. I would like to thank all the personnel including the 112 operator, the ambulance crew, as well as all at the hospital for the tremendous service. BB, Torrevieja (Alicante)

Great concert LAST night, like many others, I went to a free concert at the Rosario Gardens in Casares to see Madeline Bell, and what an amazing night we had! She is just an incredible singer – her beautiful clothes, her constant interaction with the audience and most of all the fabulous voice. She is just full of life and gives out the ‘feel good’ factor. We all had a great evening. Her accompanying chap David on the keyboard was also great. She dedicated her evening to ‘all the people we have lost’ adding a tribute to Cilla. Roof scam

I QUITE agree with Colin Bird on a lack of politeness nowadays. How much effort could it be to return a nod in exchange for a door held open? And why, oh why, do so many Spaniards insist on shoving their way on to trains before people have finished exiting? It’s worse than the London Underground for rudeness at times. I was convinced when the animal charities got involved and it was printed in the Euro Weekly News on 13th September 2013 that something would at last be done for these two stressed and unhappy elephants. A man brings them out on market days only so the tourists can take pictures and entice them to the circus just for money. Rescue needed Online woes I HAVE been trying to get two elephants retired from the circus to a wild life park of which Spain has quite a few, but was sad on market day, Wednesday, to see that the two elephants are still on the road and

dangers of shopping at Amazon. es. I have spent many, many euros with Amazon in Spain but their latest treatment of me has put me off for life. I purchased an electronic machine from them which came with instructions in Spanish and I can appreciate that fact, but when I asked if the instructions could be supplied in English, I was harangued by a very rude, unrefined vendor. Since then Amazon have refused to take the item back and have washed their hands of the affair. But as for the ‘hundreds of thousands of migrants assailing our borders’? A few thousand desperate people at most camped at Calais, many of them children, and those

Thinking that perhaps it was a necessary repair after a high wind last week I checked three of my five roofs, which were easily accessible, and found all were in good condition. Two hours later, on completion of my neighbours’ job , the workman came to me and assured me that he had noticed that at least one of the roofs I had not been able to check was in need of urgent attention. He offered to go onto the roof, take photographs, and quote me a price for the repair. He brought a ladder, hauled his 100kg body onto one of the three checked roofs, and I then heard tiles being moved as he scrambled around. When I climbed his ladder, I found that a number of the tiles on the three roofs I had previously checked as being in good condition had been pulled away and some had even been inverted. I ordered him to leave immediately and, using my own ladder, I found a total of 21 tiles had been disturbed on the three roofs and a further 10 on the other two unchecked roofs. In order to gain weight you need to consume more calories than your body uses on a daily basis. You need to know how many calories you are using up on a daily basis and you need to ensure that you eat more than you are using to ensure healthy weight gain. As a personal trainer, I work this figure out during the client’s first assessment. To gain 1lb of muscle you need to take in an extra 2,500 calories per week or an extra 400 calories per day. This also depends on individual metabolism, so you may require more or less. You would need to monitor this and also make sure you are gaining muscle and not fat. I recommend you fill out a nutritional diary and log everything you eat. Good luck!

A test to detect return of cancer SOME tumours grow again after treatment By Steve Walsh

SCIENTISTS have come up with a blood test to detect the return of cancers which have grown again after treatment. The researchers at the Institute of Cancer Research in London carried out a trial on 55 female cancer patients who were are high risk of relapse due to the size of their tumour and discovered 12 cancers out of the 15 women who had relapsed. By analysing the mutated DNA of the tumour, they were able to search the blood for the same mutations, thereby finding cancers which they would not normally have been able to detect. Of the group, 15 patients relapsed and the blood test was able

to advise 12 of them. The other three all had cancers which had already spread to the brain. While the trial detected traces of breast cancer eight months earlier than doctors would normally have been able to discover it, it is likely to be a long time before such a test is readily available. While blood analysis is cheap to do, the expense of analysing the DNA of cancerous is significantly more and while early detection of cancer is crucial in improving the chances of survival of patients through early treatment, it is not an easy process. Doctor Nick Peel from Cancer Research UK warned that “There is some way to go before this could be developed into a test that doctors could use routinely, and doing so is never simple.”

Regular guided walks start from Nerja FOR those of a healthy disposition, regular guided walks are a feature in Nerja. The next, entitled the Hidden Village, commences on Saturday, September 5 at 9.30am from the Plaza Cantarero and includes some transport in the price of €20 with a finish time of around 2.30pm. This is an easier version of another, more demanding version which is designed to take the very steep climb out of the visit to El Acebuchal. Starting from Cuatro Caminos, the walk will take two to three hours along a wide foresters trail and through a dry river bed. This is very easy terrain and trainers or walking shoes are suitable. After a special meal (€10 per person) provided especially for hikers, the group will return to Cuatro Caminos. Unsung giant of rock plays twice GUITAR man who’s worked with Led Zeppelin By John Smith ROBIN GEORGE, guitarist and producer, played two gigs in Axarquia and raised funds for Axarquia Animal Rescue. He really is an unsung hero of 1980s and 90s rock, having played with or produced for such luminaries as David Byron (Uriah Heep), Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Roy Wood (Wizzard), Brian May (Queen), John Entwistle (The Who), Noddy Holder (Slade) and Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy) to name drop just a few. With a CV like this, he arrived in Nerja for a warm up gig which guaranteed a good size crowd. In the spirit of ‘Spinal Tap’, disaster had struck the band in the previous week as the original drummer had to pull out due to family reasons and the bass player broke his finger just two days before the concert. A hurriedly put together replacement band had just two hours’ practice but all reports suggest that they were very tight and well received. The next night they headlined at the Periana fiesta with more than 4,000 people present. Starting at just after midnight, they gave a strong performance accompanied by

ROBIN GEORGE singer Amelinde. The band played a number of very popular covers together with Robin’s hit single ‘Heartline’. They are about to be anyway. I believe the European Union is in a state of disunion. The unelected EU Commission President is Jean-Claude Juncker. You really do not want to see this imposter’s CV; turn away, close your eyes. The same goes for the unelected Commission Vice-President Jyrki Katainen. my and turn anything into gold. Juncker has a track record as a tax swindler. Forced to resign his 18-year-long tenure as Prime Minister of the Lilliputian State of Luxemburg he was pursued on fraud charges. He milked national economies by creating offshore tax benefits for over 200 multinational conglomerates. His apparent accomplice, Jyrki Katainen, is Finland’s former Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. An accomplished chef he is likely to be best remembered for cooking the books. After destroying Finland’s economy, he was driven out of town by the electorate. No problem, he was appointed EU Minister of Finance. Their formula for a successful economy works like this: €1goes in and €15 comes out. The EU investment plan is to create from thin air an €8 billion guarantee which then becomes €21 billion in money. This is multiplied 15-fold. Good, we are all rich. Don’t try this at home. Mr Juncker never denied that compromises and deals worked out in EU meetings need be protected from public scrutiny, by lies if necessary. “When it becomes serious, you have to lie,” he said.

FURTHER to the justifiable demand for expats to be given the vote on continued UK membership of the EU, we have heard from politicians of all persuasions, how advantageous it is for Britain and the British people to be a part of this great institution called the European Union. This has been drummed into us since those far off days of the Common Market, when we were told by that treacherous upstart Edward Heath - hand on heart - that free and open trade was its only objective, and each nation would retain its sovereignty, make its own laws, and keep its national identity. Then via the EEC, we arrived at the present state of play and the all-powerful European Union with its unelected commission devising thousands of new laws and directives governing the way we eat, sleep, breathe, and soon I suspect, think. We all have our opinions about Europe and whilst there are people who will make a judgement based on sound logic and reason, I believe that the majority will make their decision based on the following criteria: 1) What the newspapers tell them.

AFTER yet another hot, largely dry, summer more and more home-owners are turning to Xeriscaping, the art of designing and constructing gardens that require the minimum of moisture other than the occasional rainfall and the dampening effects of low clouds, sea and river mists, and overnight dew. It can be done. Just look at the banks alongside the motorways, the verges of country roads, the sides of mountains and mountain-tops, clifffaces, and the inland side of sand dunes along the coast. In your garden you will need to: A. Replicate the soil structures of such places. B. Plant trees, shrubs and plants that seem to survive and even thrive under such conditions. See the plant lists in the book ‘HOW TO USE LESS WATER IN YOUR

GARDEN’ which is most easily obtained via Amazon Books. C. Plant roots so that they are under rocks where moisture is the last to dry out. D. Create semi-shaded positions or areas that are only in full sun for part of the day, E. Contour the garden so that any rain is channelled to where required and not lost into non-planted areas or to neighbouring properties. F. Take out the thirstiest plants in the garden or replant them where they can be easily watered by gravity from tubs of rainwater collected by installing guttering on at least one roof or by running washing-up water and washing machine water to the garden via a settling and cooling tank. They don’t really need any additional water once they’ve reached full size.

Hotels on a high as July figures released 39.8 MILLION overnight stays in one month By Steve Walsh FIGURES just released by the Spanish national statistics institute (INE) have confirmed that July was a great month for the hotels of Spain, with a recorded 39.8 million overnight stays in one month. This represents an increase of 5.9 per cent year-on-year, according to the INE data published this week. The data also revealed that the increase is primarily due to the 7 per cent boost of Spanish residents using hotels this year, while the number of overnight stays by foreign visitors rose by 5.3 per cent. Furthermore, they state that hotels invoiced an average of €87.8 per occupied room, which was nearly 8 per cent

According to the latest data by the General Council of Notaries, the sale of homes in Spain jumped by 19.4 per cent in J une 2015, c ompa red t o t he sam e month the previous year, reaching a total of 37,641 sales transactions. The June 2015 data marks the fourth consecutive month of increases in home sales transactions, following those of March (+12.3 per cent), April (+1.9) and May (+8.5). Apartment sales increased by 20.8 per cent, driven by transactions on secondhand apartments, which rose by 25.2 per c e nt, w hile the tra ns act i ons on new apartments increased by 2.2 per cent. A former Cabinet minister and expresident of the Madrid autonomous region, she hankered after notching up city hall, too, but lost May’s municipal elections. She was defeated by Carmena who had the backing of, but does not belong to, groups close to Podemos and the PSOE. NEWS that Greece’s PM, Alexis Tsipras, called snap elections in a bid to return to power is only the latest step in a drama more like a Carry On Up the Acropolis-type farce than a Shakespearean tragedy. Let’s leave aside the question of whether the euro was flawed from the start, or whether Greece should have been allowed to join (all agreed on that answer, right?), and consider what’s happened since the crisis erupted. The Greeks (individually and governmentally) ended up in this mess by stubbornly, for years, living be-

overspending could continue ad infinitum. A view not shared by their creditors, given there’s no prospect of Greece ever eliminating their increasing debt (unless perhaps a huge

gold mine’s discovered, and frantic fracking begins, under the Acropolis). Tsipras promised them the earth, Marxist moon and stars (generous pensions, low levels of VAT, high levels of tax avoidance) and they bought it. At the time of writing (but, hey, this is Greece. Anything’s still possible!), he’s turned the poker game into a round of Russian roulette by calling a referendum on the bailout proposals. Interestingly, the British electorate faced a similar choice in May, but decided to stick with the party that had taken them out of fiscal bondage. The Greeks had a similar choice (their then government slowly turning things round), but they chose the easier path of false promises putting the lunatics in charge of the asylum. Now all must suffer for their reckless choice.

And Mr Tsipras, how can he lose? Unconstrained by past policies he advocated to oppose austerity and achieve debt write-downs, he’s still purring in front of the foreign cameras and striding the corridors of power like a Colossus, adored in Athens like a latter-day Achilles for taking on the Titans of Europe. So, what’s the betting Greece defaults yet again if Tsipras wins a new majority and we go through the whole we-want-EU-money-but-without-any-austerity process again - a saga increasingly like Groundhog Day or DFS summer sales? Looks as if this new bail-out could be derailed before it’s even begun.
