Scheme to benefit 280,000 A NEW work orientation scheme announced on Friday (August 21) will see the Spanish government spending €110 million in Andalucia to benefit an estimated 280,000 jobless people. Fatima Bañez, Minister of Employment and Social Security, announced the scheme in Sevilla, and explained that it will be aimed at people aged between 30 and 55 who have been out of work for a long time and will be launched in 2016. The figure allotted to Andalucia, the minister explained, is 22 per cent of the total budget for the scheme for all the Spanish regions as the government is concerned at the high unemployment rates in the southern region and intends to work harder to even out the differences between local and national rates.

FOR the past three months, the Old Town centre of La Herradura has been the subject of its biggest transformation of the past 40 years. A comprehensive series of renovations have been carried out across its streets, including renovations of the sewage and water supply systems, new pavement design and measures for fire prevention. The first phase of the work was focused on the San Ramon, Blanquita, Cuesta Peralta streets and other surrounding areas. This week, the finishing touches are being put to the renovation of Calle Granada
and the surrounding areas, which were visited by Deputy Major Juan Jose Ruiz Joya, as well as other government representatives. “This work puts an end to problems with damp that several residents have been experiencing in recent years, as well as flooding problems resulting from the lack of an appropriate sewage system, which cause the creation of ‘rivers,’ especially in the Cuesta de Peralta and Cuesta de Fray Leopoldo streets,” said Mr Ruiz Joya. He added: “I would like to apologise to all those neighbours who are being disturbed by the work and thank them for their understanding and collaboration.”

Museum crisis in Motril
MOST are closed for summer By Maria José Fernandez CULTURE-VULTURES who arrived in Motril in hopes of learning everything about the town’s historical heritage have seen their dreams shattered as most of the museums are closed for the summer. Two of the four museums available in the town are currently closed for different reasons. One of them, the History Museum (Mhimo) displays a poster on its door which informs that the closure is temporary and due to maintenance reasons. Culture councillor Francisco Ruiz explained that the air conditioning in the facilitt is broken
and there is no money to fix it. It is expected it will be reopened in September. The geology museum will also be closed until September. These facilities are one of the most important cultural epicentres of the town as they allow the visitor to know firsthand a real life mine, traversing through it with the help of a guide. A lack of personnel seems to be the reason why this museum is also shut down. Finally, the ones who survived budgetary problems in part are the art museum Jose Hernandez Quero and the Preindustrial sugar museum, but without the guided visits, as there is also a lack of staff.

Uncertain future for Lope de Vega THEATRE on shaky ground due to budget By Maria José Fernandez THE keenly awaited renovation of Velez-Malaga’s Lope de Vega theatre is on shaky ground due to budget issues. “The town council will not be able to meet this major investment at the moment, we are talking about almost €3 million,” said Mayor Antonio Moreno Ferrer.
The theatre was purchased by the former government team, led by the Partido Popular conservative party, for a price of €500,000. Now in the opposition, head of PP Francisco Delgado said if the renovations were not carried out as proposed, the National Sports Gala, which was due to be hosted at this theatre in March 2016, would be at risk
of being cancelled. The current mayor replied that the government was currently negotiating the event with the organisers to find an alternative location, such as one of the two indoor sports pavilions in the town. The project was expected to turn the Lope de Vega into the biggest theatre of the province.

The Roman Archaeological Site Interpretation Centre has extended its opening hours and improved the service by adding new highly qualified guides and specialists in history and archaeology.

Costa Women connect, inspire and support Our Euro Women series is featuring women who have made a success of their lives in Spain. These outstanding ladies have been shattering glass ceilings whether in business, charity work or sports. Ali helps others achieve what they think is impossible. ALI MEEHAN came to Spain in 2002 after realising that she had much more adventure and passion in her soul to do more both personally, and also for others. She had already met her future husband, Patrick back in the UK at a friend’s party, and as Patrick was working in Spain, Ali decided to move her office here and join him. She was working for Business Development Consultancy in the Middle East, so it allowed her to be flexible on where she lived. As she and Patrick moved around the globe with their work, Ali would mainly be operating from her home via internet, until her work found her living and working in the Middle East in 2004. By this time, she knew what it felt like to uproot and start again in a strange country. This experience was to play a large part in what she has achieved today. Ali and Patrick returned to Spain and married in Mijas in 2009. However it was not long before they uprooted again to live for another eight months in Thailand, which was also a massive business learning curve for her. Ali calls herself ‘a serial expat’ as she has travelled and lived far and wide, but she still calls Spain her home. By 2010 she was back here once more and this was the year that Costa Women was born. Ali had realised during her travels that there were women living all over the world with a need to connect with others, or confidence boosting and support in order to move forward in their lives. Her ethos was simple, to connect, inspire, enable and support, which is how the Costa Women organisation operates today. Ali had already put a website in place just before she left Thailand.

they are achievable” When talking to Ali you realise she has done exactly that, achieved, and is continuing to help others achieve with the same frame of mind. It is hard to believe such a softly spoken and gentle person such as Ali carries such strength and determination inside. And thank goodness she does as this strength has changed the attitudes of women everywhere. Now many women enjoy the coffee mornings, social and business group meetings, International Women’s Day events and all other events where united they can raise funds for others in need. I asked Ali has she anything that she would have done differently and she replied “I named the group ‘Costa Women,’ and now we have overgrown from the Costa into so many other places across Spain and the Islands.” I also asked her where she will be in five years time. “Out of all the countries I have lived in, I still love Spain the best. I want to give much more back to the Spanish community as well as expats, I love my work here, and right now is the best time of my life.” Her uplifting attitude to life is what drives her on to get the results she desires. New structure aims to protect Torrox beaches STRONG waves and winds can be damaging
TORROX LIGHTHOUSE: A new semi-submerged breakwater is to be built. By Maria Jose Fernandez OVER the past two decades, the Torrox coast has taken a battering from strong waves and winds, often sustaining heavy damage. With the goal of preventing severe erosion and further costs, the Spanish Environment Ministry has launched a project to redevelop the beach. A new, semi-submerged breakwater, 115 metres long, is to be built opposite the Torrox light-
house, for an estimated cost of €584,995. At least 30 different companies have participated in the public tender process, with discounts on the estimated budget of up to 40 per cent. It is expected the works will be awarded in September or October and be started before the end of this year. Business owners in the area have been calling for such measures to be taken for several years, as arguing repeatedly that adding sand to the eroded areas was a waste of money.

GAS TECHNICIAN: Must be qualified.
Do not fall victim to ‘gas inspectors’ scheme fraud RESIDENTS are advised to obtain information before making a gas revision By Community reporter NERJA’S foreign residents’ office wishes to alert all residents to the infamous gasinspections fraud scheme, which seem to be spreading around Nerja and other Axarquia towns once again. Here are the main guidelines to find out whether an inspection is false: • A gas revision is compulsory every five years. The installation has to be inspected for safety reasons to avoid gas accidents. Only the official gas bottle supplier can tell residents the date when a gas revision is due, according to the gas supply contract.
Contact Repsol (orange bottles), tel. for Nerja and the Axarquía area 952 406 904, or Cepsa (silver bottles), tel. for Nerja and Frigiliana area 952 521 593. • Only a qualified gas technician Instalador de Gas, can make the gas revision. It is the resident who has to choose any technician or company to perform revision. A previous appointment can be arranged via phone. The technician has to display their Spanish ID, with the same information as the certificate given once the installation is completed. • A normal gas revision costs from €50 to €63. It includes the changing of the
rubber tubes, checking the safety of the installation and providing a certificate stating at the top ‘Certificado de Revision Periodica.’ If it proves unsafe, the gas technician will issue a report called Informe de Anomalias, specifying the modifications to be carried out. Residents are advised to obtain information before making the gas revision, calmly and without rushing, never on the same moment that they knock on the door. This will help avoiding bad experiences. Not so beautiful view at Playa Linda, Benajarafe A LOCAL resident, Janet Saunders has contacted Euro Weekly News with regards to an ongoing problem with hygiene at the Playa Linda Beach in Benajarafe (Velez-Malaga) which her residence overlooks. There are signs which clearly state that camping is not allowed but according to her, a large number of people ignore this and arrive
on Friday evenings, set up camp in groups and stay until late Sunday. She went to some length to stress these are family groups who are not noisy but there is a serious potential problem as there are no public toilet facilities in the area. There is a single restaurant and a chiringuito which closes early and they understandably only offer toilet facilities to clients.
There are public toilets on other beaches but not there and this does lead to use of the beach as a latrine. Janet says she has seen all types of unsanitary waste including nappies and she fears that apart from the that the area is becoming unpleasant, there is a real risk of infection and vermin. The EWN has contacted the council to request information.

35,000 Malaga residents exposed in data dump MADRID is the city with the largest number of users of the website By Carol Irving PERSONAL data from 35,000 Malaga residents has been published in the Ashley Madison hacking scandal. The dating website, which encourages married couples to engage in affairs by recruiting members who are looking for extra marital relationships, was hacked in July by a group called Impact Team, according to tech specialist magazine Wired. The hackers posted the emails and telephone numbers of 37 million members from 48 different countries on the internet. Now, the Spanish company Technologica has created a map which shows the location of the 50,000 municipalities around the world in which the users live. Results indicate that 35,000 of Ashley Madison users are resident in 103 municipalities in Malaga Province, with 85 per cent of Malaga members being men. Nevertheless, Madrid is the city with the largest number of the website’s users,

Spanish beaches are in danger of disappearing WORLDWIDE nature charity WWF has launched a campaign coinciding with August, Spain’s classic beach holiday month, to ask people to petition
the government to do something about global warming before beaches disappear. The effects of global warming are not something far away
and intangible but in fact are a close and distinct problem, the WWF has stressed, and unless something is done about greenhouse effect gas emissions the Spanish coasts will be particularly harshly affected by the impact of climate change. The Ni Un Grado Mas (not a single degree higher) campaign reminds that scientists have predicted sea levels will rise six centimetres and Spanish beaches will shrink by between one and three metres by 2040, and asks people to petition the government for a 100 per cent renewable energy policy. The United Nations Climatic Change Experts Group calculates that if measures are not taken and countries continue to emit gases at the same rate, sea levels could rise by up to 59 centimetres by the end of this century. This would seriously endanger ecosystems and coastal populations, the WWF said.

If jobs are scarce bilingual children can bank on a brighter future BEING able to go back and forth between languages is a kind of brain training, pushing your brain to be flexible
Loose change Jane Plunkett A look at finance for females jane.plunkett@euroweeklynews.com
BILINGUALS get all the perks. Better job prospects, higher salaries, a cognitive boost and even protection against dementia. A lot of research has been done on the bilingual mind and it seems that going back and forth between languages is a kind of brain training, pushing your brain to be flexible. Just as regular exercise gives your body some biological benefits, mentally controlling two or more languages gives your brain cognitive benefits. So as expatriates living here in Spain it really does pay off to raise children in a bilingual environment from the moment they are born. The mental flexibility of being able to jump from one language to another pays off big time in the future, and especially when looking for a job.

Less time to pay COINCIDENTALLY now the government has amended its policy on tax for solar generated electricity for homes, the Spanish electricity companies have decided to reduce time limits for disconnection of late payers.
Anti-mosquito shirts ALTHOUGH there is some other clothing in the world market, a Spanish company, STINGBye has developed a range of anti-mosquito shirts which it currently sells through pharmacies within Spain and hopes to export to other countries in the near future.
Film tax relief THE British government has set up a new department in Manchester to deal with the corporation tax affairs of companies which are eligible for Film Tax Relief. Provided films have a spend within the UK of no less than 10 per cent and can pass a cultural test, producers can claim up to 25 per cent tax relief.
According to experts, the reasons why being bilingual is so rewarding are numerous. Bilinguals are better at multi-tasking. Apparently
children who grow up learning to speak two languages are better at switching between tasks than children who speak only one language.
Bilingualism makes you more open-minded and sensitive to others. Bilinguals have an enhanced awareness of other people’s points of view, born from their deeper understanding, from an early age, that some people have a different perspective. This, according to the Financial Times probably makes bilinguals better managers. Another study found bilingualism enhances your listening ability. It showed that in a noisy environment bilinguals are better at detecting the different sounds, therefore enhancing attention, which in turn is a valuable workplace quality. Bilingual children are noted to score high in tests and exams due to advanced thinking skills, while bilingualism also offers children a direct path to live and work abroad, and perhaps even easily pick up a third language in the future. A study from the US also shows that significantly higher salaries are paid to bilingual speakers than monolingual speakers! So where jobs are scarce, ensuring that our children are proficient in a second language, also ensures a more financially stable future.
Gibraltar decides not to charge IVA on any sales in the territory AS Gibraltar is not part of the EU Customs Union, even though it is a member of the EU through Britain, it has decided not to charge IVA (VAT) on any sale made within the territory. Clearly this is very beneficial to local inhabitants and visitors. This decision also makes it attractive for certain businesses which become domiciled on the Rock. Anyone who purchases goods in Spain which are then transferred to Gibraltar is entitled to reclaim the IVA in full from the Spanish authorities and this is important for larger purchases where a Gibraltar import duty may be levied. Conversely, however, if an item is purchased and consumed in Spain by a Gibraltar resident or company, IVA must be charged by the Spanish seller and cannot be reclaimed. If you go to the theatre in Spain for example, then the point where the tax is charged remains in Spain.
THE ROCK: The decision is beneficial to local inhabitants and visitors.

Investigation continues THE Spanish National Securities Market Commission has revealed that a police economic crimes unit is investigating the matter of the revocation of certain licences to trade on the stock market. It has been alleged in the media that corruption may have been involved in the granting of these licences but the investigation is in its early stages.
Police tweet SPANISH police have taken the unusual action of issuing a tweet warning consumers messages received through WhatsApp and SMS offering Mercadona vouchers are fraudulent. The message invites consumers to participate in a survey and takes them to a premium service which also demands personal information in order for the ‘prizes’ to be issued. Naturally a spokesperson for Mercadona has confirmed the company is not in any way associated with the fraud and everyone should dump unopened - these messages.

I WARNED my friend but she was adamant, she could trust her instincts. A Russian language copy-writer translator, her client owed her €180 which was now overdue. He wanted more work done, would she oblige. My friend is an obliging lady and soon the €180 became €340. Her faith in her client was to her credit but the overdue invoice was to his credit. It still is. This week she received an email. His business is experiencing cash-flow difficulties. It may be some time before he is in a position to settle the bill. Those with clout no doubt; the utilities and essential suppliers will be paid. My friend, a single mum, has no clout whatsoever. She isn’t alone of course. It is this small business sector that bears the brunt of lost settlements. Faced by hot competition payment upfront is out of the question. The same applies if credit limits are applied. If clients default they simply
CLAPPED OUT: Getting it through an ITV was more than the car was worth. move on to the next victim. If, as there is in the UK, there was a workable solution the problem would be much reduced. An outstanding auto-mechanic was honest in his appraisal. Her R/H drive clapped out car was worth only say €300. The cost of getting it through the ITV would be €850. It was a no-brainer.
She then said the car was worth more to her and begged him to work on it. Shrugging, he got on with it. He then called her expecting to hear pearls dropping from her mouth. She had decided that she didn’t want the car after all; he could have it. Anyone want to buy a clapped out Clio that just squeaked
through the ITV? If clients are genuine, and most are, they will perfectly understand if you request a deposit of say 50 per cent. If they don’t like it then they are not the kind of customers you want. You actually make or save money by telling them, ‘my way or the highway.’

All in it up to their old pal eyeballs EARLY leaders ruled by fear and strength, many of whom were far worse than ISIS LEAPY LEE SAYS IT
OTHERS THINK IT ARAB spring? Ha! The actions of Bush and Blair have turned the Middle East into a winter that could last for centuries. These two despots, in their headlong flight to seize the oil wealth of desert lands under the guise of freeing their citizens from oppression, have managed to upset a delicate balance that has endured for thousands of years. The inhabitants of these Mid-East countries were simply not ready for so called independence. The Arab calendar is in the 14th century. If you look back to 14th century Europe you will find it ruled by the Monarchy, feudal aristocrats and religious zealots. Sound familiar? These early leaders ruled by fear and strength, many of whom committed atrocities far beyond those carried out by the likes of ISIS. Because the majority of Europe’s inhabitants were basically simple peasants, this method of control actually worked and be-

neath the savage glitter of feudal Europe, countries traded and prospered. There were of course wars and uprisings, the strongest and fittest survived and subsequently con-
tinued to maintain the status quo. Well Blair and Bush’s maraud into the Middle East changed all that. We are now reaping the harvest. We see hundreds of
thousands of migrants assailing our borders; people who were probably perfectly happy carrying out their daily lives under the strict regimes of Hussein and Gadhafi. We are experiencing acts of unspeakable terror at home. Thousands of our troops have been maimed and killed, and the Middle East is in complete turmoil. As to the Chilcot enquiry, if ever I saw a conspiracy to protect the rears of the guilty this is it. As far as I’m concerned they are all in it up to their old pal eyeballs. A series of very simple questions should have resolved this years ago. With a bit of justice, Blair should have already been behind bars for some time. Question. ‘Mr Blair. Who told you Hussein had weapons of destruction that could be launched in 45 minutes’? Answer. ‘Fred Flange.’ Question. ‘Mr Flange. Who told you Hussein had… etc. etc.’? Sooner or later the buck would have hit the wall. Six months at the most. Six years? Cover up. Keep the faith Love Leapy leapylee2002@gmail.com

LEGALLY SPEAKING
Improvement to traffic boards AS part of this series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers. SUBTLE improvements have been made to traffic information boards on Spain’s roads by the DGT to indicate delays on the roads. Most motorways have overhead signs to warn of weather conditions and accidents and journey times, and now, alongside these timings for journeys, some of the display panels will also display a clock face. A white clock indicates that traffic is flowing normally, whereas a red clock indicates that there are delays. The aim is to try and provide more information to motorists and therefore encourage safer driving through awareness of problems ahead. Pegasus catches dangerous driver Not everyone drives safely though as the DGT reports that the airborne speed detector, Pegasus, has clocked a Porsche travelling at 218km per hour on the R-4 ring road of Madrid, when the maximum speed allowed is 120km per hour. The footage recorded showed the vehicle to have French licence plates and a child in the back of the car that was not wearing the mandatory seatbelt. Pegasus normally catches speeders who are later informed of their activities and fines but due to the gravity of the offences being committed by the vehicle and the serious risk to road safety, the helicopter

Is the UK now a “soft touch” for Cameron’s “swarms” of migrants? WHAT’S wrong with this solution? They would solve a lot of the country’s problems Nora Johnson

THE world is facing its worst refugee crisis since the Second World War with 50 million people leaving their homes according to the EU’s migration commissioner. This after David Cameron’s comments about “swarms” of migrants making for British shores! There followed numerous proposals for dealing with the crisis like, for instance, issuing ID cards, which provoked much flak from bleeding-heart liberals and the usual suspects. Now, I’ve never understood the problem with issuing these cards. They’d solve lots of problems and are the rule in most advanced democracies.
Straightaway after WW2, they were in circulation in the UK and I don’t believe anyone objected then! Naturally, today’s ID cards would be far more state of the art than those war-time cardboard ones. But they’d represent a breakthrough in keeping tabs on who has, or hasn’t the right to reside in the UK, apply for benefits and, in addition, provide solid proof of identification for those members of the legitimate population who don’t have a passport or driving licence. So many could benefit: the elderly, the very young, the very poor and the disabled. As regards not registering those who leave the country, it’s beyond belief that successive governments (both Conservative and Labour) should have abandoned such checks at outward passport control. It’s prepos-
terous, too, that the administration of applications and the consequent huge delays in granting leave to stay or, if refused, removing the claimant ends up taking forever.
A much more targeted, businesslike approach to this ever-growing crisis is what’s called for: a sea change from the traditional British ‘muddling through.’ But what about the EU’s response, you ask? Yeah,
ID CARDS: Would represent a breakthrough on who has or hasn’t the right to reside in the UK.
right, there goes another herd of pigs flying past my window! EU efforts to forge solutions routinely end in bickering and half-baked policies generally eliciting responses from countries within it that unsurprisingly rhyme with ‘bucket.’ I’m not saying ID cards are the only solution (try telling a professional historian that things were simpler in the past - and stand well back). What’s needed is to reverse the widespread perception that Britain’s a ‘soft touch.’ This might even lead to a more generous response to those in truly genuine need, like vulnerable Syrians in UN camps. Don’t gamble by skimping on insurance often only the tip of the iceberg. At Globelink, we recently paid over £45,000 to repatriate one of our clients back to the UK following heart surgery in the US! One last thing I must stress: don’t wait until the last minute to book your travel cover, that’s just asking to be caught out. Remember too, that single trip holiday insurance must cover the whole of your return trip, from the date you leave your country of residence to the date you return. Don’t be tempted to book it from a friend’s address in the UK. Declaring you’re a UK resident when you live in Spain, it’s fraud. If you do make a claim, it won’t wash, but you could find yourself in pretty hot water!
David Deverson GLOBELINK INTERNATIONAL Insurance correspondent david@globelink.co.uk
HOLIDAYS are sacred, not least to us Brits, but a recent travel industry survey showed that most of us would sooner economise on gadgets, home improvements or eating out than cut back on our well-earned breaks. We are also taking longer holidays, even if that means cutting back on the number of trips we make. What’s more, we don’t mind splashing out on the extras that help turn a ‘hohum’ holiday into the stuff of memories. Travel companies have woken up to that fact and now let you tailor your trip with special add-ons. A mini-cruise here, a scenic train journey there, and it can soon add up to a sizeable splurge. Whether you’re travelling under your own steam or on a package, the chances are you’ll be paying upfront with more at stake if anything goes wrong. Suppose you’re injured and have to cancel your trip because you’re unfit to travel? What if your flight from Spain is delayed and you miss your connecting flight out of the UK? Or a relative back home falls seriously ill and you
TRAVEL INSURANCE: Don’t be caught out. have to cut your holiday short to be there? It’s human nature to think ‘it won’t happen to me,’ but if it does, you’ll certainly be glad you took out decent travel cover to shield you against the kinds of things that can and do happen out of the blue. Do check your policy to make sure it fits the trip you’re planning, and consider taking out top-up cover if appropriate.
Cancellation costs can be peanuts compared to the head-spinning financial risks involved if you run into health problems without proper cover. People generally underestimate the cost of medical treatment abroad, which has rocketed in recent years. That’s especially true of Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, Japan and the US, where hospital stays alone can cost around £2,500 per day. Even then, medical bills are

POPPY the Collie Labrador cross enjoys playing in the pool. She loves water. Even when she was first adopted as a scrawny rescue puppy she w ould wa l k a r o u n d th e perimeter sniffing and pawing the water out of nervous curiosity. Now that she is older she dives in without any hesitation. Her owners Jeff and Annie also care for three other rescue dogs but none quite as daring as Poppy. In the summer th e wh o l e f u r family needs care when Jeff and Annie go on holiday. Kennelling four dogs for several weeks twice a year can ad d u p i n c o st s; it re stricts the holiday budget! Recently a friend recommended HouseSitMatch.com an online network f o r p e t a n d h o me owners to find sitters to come

And over three years of full time housesitting they’ve gained a lot of experience with all manner of domestic pets, dogs especially. The sitters cost nothing and cared for the pets in exchange for free accommodation. It’s a fair exchange and an affordable solution for Jeff and Annie.
SO much depends on how your dog gets on in life. I thought it appropriate to write about ‘Inherited Behaviour’ because all dogs will certainly have inherited behaviour. The behaviour of dogs, like all animals gets inherited via genetic pre-disposition and genetic memory. Genetic pre-disposition towards certain types of behaviour or attitudes in life are inherited at birth, much like the pre-programmed default factory settings you may find on a computer or TV when you buy it new. What they govern are things like a dog’s prevailing temperament, personality and the type of behaviour that comes instinctively to him when faced with different situations or events. As an example everything from how readily he will pursue prey to how confident, fearful or aggressive he will become in more testing situations and
INHERITED BEHAVIOUR: How strongly he will attach to people. even how strongly he will emotionally attach to people making later separation issues in people more likely. Genetic memory is a rather different phenomenon. If an animal repeats a specific behaviour enough times, a ‘memory’ of this behaviour eventually get stored in its genes and cells, which is then passed down from one generation to the next. This is how birds know when to migrate or how to build nests without any other bird showing them.
Or how sheepdogs know how to stalk and round up sheep without any other dog showing them. It is purely down to the effects of inherited genetic pre-disposition and memory. The same phenomenon is behind all different, and also far more genetically magnified working instincts found in different breeds of dog. In other words they are born with a certain inherited compulsion to behave in a specific way.
Remember our four legged friends in the summer WHILST so many people think of the sun and vacations during the month of August, there is a real and hidden problem concerning the well-being of domestic animals. Cats and dogs don’t always get remembered during the holidays and sadly many are simply put on the streets as it may be too expensive or too much of a chore to bother about find-
ing accommodation for them. There are of course a number of very willing and dedicated volunteers who are prepared to look after these and other strays either as foster carers for individual animals or in rescue homes. However, many of the officials responsible for catching the animals go on holiday in August which
means the number of strays on the streets increases and some impatient vets simply put the animals to sleep in order to clear their practices before they close down. During this month in particular, rather than buying a pedigree cat or dog, it would be so much more caring to contact one of the rescue centres to adopt one of the strays they have
saved from destruction. There are rescue centres all over the south of Spain: PPP Dogs in Spain Baza Perrera Dogs that needs help Costa Blanca Dog Animals needing homes Costa del Sol Axarqia Online Animal Rescue Valencia Perrera Dogs Valla Verde Animal Rescue

Nastiness could have been avoided with a little humanity LIKE many others I am sure, this whole story in the Almeria edition last week, of the lost cat and dog held hostage would make me quite determined to avoid using such an establishment as these kennels in the future because of the arrogant attitude of the kennel owners. My parents used to run extremely successful boarding kennels in both England and Scotland before they retired, and would NEVER have asked for payment for any animal which had gone missing whilst under their care. It really is irrelevant to the poor elderly owner if there was a break-in, or a whether it was a case of the cat making a dash for it. She has lost her beloved pet and you have to do your best to make things a little better, if indeed you can. Things can happen that can’t be helped, but if the business is so terribly legal (as almost insisted upon), then why is there no insurance to cover such possibilities? The majority of kennels in the area are very strict about all vaccinations being up to date, and hold the animal passports as proof should an inspection take place. Don’t please, blame the owner if you fail to do this. As for the dog being held hostage thus running up an enormous bill, this was quite unfeeling, and in my opinion only a very bad business person would demand such a thing. All of this nastiness could have been avoided with a little humanity and common sense. ‘Josephine’ (SORBAS) By email
Beach hazard I AM writing to express my increasing concern over a major public health hazard. I live close to Playa Linda in Benajarafe, where we have a problem with unauthorised Beach camping. Every weekend throughout the long summer period several large families camp overnight on our local beach. There are absolutely no toilet facilities on this beach apart from those in two bars, which are ‘client only,’ and closed overnight. The police are a regular presence, but chose to ignore this illegal activity, as do the beach cleaners who pick up

I SEE in the headlines, that now is the time that it’s hardest to manage to get by on our money: Answer... Don’t spend so much. Easy for me to say as i am a pensioner, ‘the Lucky’ generation. Let’s make some comparisons between ‘the Lucky’ generation and today’s: Take the home we live in, compare the luxury furnishings and electrical appliances to those of ‘the Lucky’ generation. Today we have a 50 inch TV, music systems, wall to wall carpets, and central heating. In the kitchen, wow, you have to be a technical genius to boil a kettle. OK, no kettle, it comes out of the tap boiling. In the garage: A modern up-to-date car. Now let’s take a look at ‘the Lucky’ generation. The home was small, believe me it was cramped. The luxury furnishings, lino, you’ve probably never heard of it? It was usually an ugly brown, furniture was as it came, one design, take it or leave it, Colour? Yes you’ve guessed, brown. Music system: A two valve radio. TV, yes we had TV; second hand for £5. The kitchen was a delight, a very old gas cooker, that’s it. We only had cold water, if you wanted a bath, lots of kettles and sit in front of the fire in the front room. Our lighting was a gas mantle that used to give very little light. Only one jacket and trousers. So to the point: EASY, DON’T SPEND SO MUCH MONEY. Clive Graham, By email daily along this stretch. I have concerns with public health, as at the back of the beach in the vegetation there is a huge amount of human excrement, plus the attendant used tissue and also soiled disposable nappies and female sanitary items. This is very unpleasant to encounter when walking both from a visual, and sensual aspect. The smell is appalling. I have no problem with families enjoying the beach in this way but feel the town hall must be made to provide sanitation stations during this time. This beach is very popular and there are hundreds of families using it every weekend to the point it is packed solid. Campers apart, where are these people attending their ‘calls of nature.’ In the 21st century this lack of hy-
giene is unacceptable. Janet Saunders. Benajarafe. Malaga.
I’m ashamed Dear Editor, Re: Leapy’s article Having been out of action for a few days, I only saw Leapy’s article the other day, and it makes me ashamed to be British. As usual, he leaps in with all sorts of nonsense about how the immigrants are abusing our system, which is not true; we English made a pretty good job at that too! I suppose he hasn’t been anywhere near the camps, or the desperate meth-
ods used by those trying to get inside. How does he know what he is saying? He doesn’t! And what would difference would a precious few foreign nationals make. Let’s make a decision, to admit a fair number, along with the French, and stop forgetting our Christian duty to help others, Yours sincerely, William Campbell. Mojacár, by email
Lack of respect Hi Leapy Re: Immigrants I read with interest your article about the immigrants, I have been saying the same thing, what do you
think about the way manners etc. seem to have just disappeared, and I put it down to the general public don’t give a toss attitude. I think for a start that TV should clean its act up, it seems you can’t say ‘the N word’ on the box but you can use every expletive that comes to mind, and most of the time it’s not necessary. I think that camps should be set up to house asylum seekers as per your article, the next would be people that abuse nurses and teachers; there should be a minimum fine of £5,000 with no time to pay, if they can’t pay, two years in prison. The next is the lack of respect that is shown to people in authority, I know that the police have not helped their image, but they are the law and as such should be treated with respect. So I would reintroduce borstals for the joyriders, the burglars and general misfits, and those that don’t know when to keep their mouth shut, and would be run by the military police. Now we get into the drug dealers and pushers. These would be sent to high security camps run by the military police, these people would be fed a daily dose of their preferred drug until they were hooked, then left to dry out with no help. You could even make two years in the army punishment for certain crimes. The problem is the punishment never fits the crime, we need to bring back respect and consideration for other people, and their property. Did you know that in Spain, foul mouthing the police gets you a fine, and if you commit a crime they can put you in prison for years. As a last resort, there is always the cat. Read your piece every week, keep up the good work. Regards Ron Chivers By email

JACK Black is Dan Landsman, a sad, pitiful figure who has few friends and is disliked by his old school mates. As head of his high school reunión committee, he desperately tries to improve his social status by inviting his school’s celebrity pupil, Oliver Lawless to the reunion which no one wants to attend. TIME
YOUR STARS LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) The usually flamboyant attitude which is yours at this time of the year is now subdued, but this will not last for too much longer and soon things will be back to normal. You will be looking to spice up your romantic life and your partner will be only too willing to go along with your suggestions. SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) There is a lot going on and sometimes you need to take a step back. A feeling that you have covered some ground before is not unfounded. However, there are certain aspects of your life which need to be revisited. Only in this way are you able to see the real progress that has been made. SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) Expectations are high. With energy peaking early on, projects gain momentum and there are early results. A suggestion made to a loved one some time ago is now acceptable and there could be some excitement. Rather than setting down hard-andfast plans, it may be better to be flexible. CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Your love life is highlighted and, although you may be suspicious of your good luck, this is a new phase. Whereas before you had some reason to mistrust you are now able to have confidence. It is a great time to progress your inclinations on the romantic front.
VIRGO
(August 24 - September 23)
A great light shines on your romantic life. Whether it is meeting up with old chums or a new date, there is electricity in the air for you. Equally, a business coupling is particularly fruitful and you count your blessings to have gone down a particular path. AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) Cast your net wide this week and be prepared to take advantage of a state of freedom. With high energy and an expansive mind, you are in a good position. Avoid being thrown out of kilter by activities around you. It may be difficult to make real progress at times but that does not mean you are unable to plan. PISCES (February 20 - March 20) As the moon shines on you, it is almost possible to feel the light. After a few recent hiccups it is now possible to get down to achieving your heart's desire. Whether that is what you will want at the end of the day is neither here nor there. What matters most to your wellbeing now is to see some results. ARIES (March 21 - April 20) There will be good news regarding an application or legal document. Following on from that your finances take a turn for the better and this could be long term. Having extra cash is great, but be wary of someone who would like to part you from it. At the

weekend, events take a romantic turn but timing may be bad owing to other commitments. TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) Although you feel more in control as the week comes to an end, do not make the mistake of counting your chickens before they are hatched. If you do, you could end up with egg on your face. Continue to plan to get the best results but bide your time. GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) Colleagues are far from helpful at the moment and you may even feel that matters are going backwards. It may be necessary to move away and leave them to haggle among themselves. Perhaps later you may step in and take control of the confusion. If your business life is far from good then it is more than balanced by harmony at home. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Your mind is sharp and it is easy to spot problems before they arise. Some dispute regarding a trip is disappointing. However, you are not able to please everyone in this instance. A glitch in a close relationship needs sorting out now before things get worse. LEO (July 24 - August 23) Having been given a chance to take responsibility at the beginning of the month, you are determined to do your best. Certainly, it is a time to concentrate on any business matters which need attention.

Can We Live Here?: Finding a Home in Paradise

While most of us complain when the price of beer goes up, or when we have to pay more than a fiver for a cocktail, there are some exclusive drinks that even the rich and famous would baulk at paying. Here we list the 10 most expensive alcoholic drinks.
Chateau d’Yquem.
GIVING up your full-time job and finding a new home in a far flung country on the other side of the world is clearly an adventure waiting to happen and Sarah Alderson’s account of her and her family’s search for a different lifestyle abroad is both intriguing and hysterical. In 2009, Alderson, her husband and young daughter spent eight months of their lives travelling through Australia, the US and Asia facing wild animals, witchcraft and a whole range of challenges and incidents that will make you laugh out loud. The result of her time spent overseas is this fascinating account of their adventures, which is both a travel blog and an instructional manual on how to follow your dreams in paradise and not just survive the experience, but enjoy it too. books@euroweeklynews.com
1. Tequila Ley .925 The world’s most expensive alcoholic drink is a type of tequila. But you won’t be licking salt off the back of your hand and knocking back a shot of this, since the cost of a sip will cost you your life savings, and more. While it is the 6,400 diamonds that are encrusted on the bottle that contribute to the $3.5 million price tag (€3,163,455), the tequila is said to be uniquely produced. So far, no one is known to have consumed it. No surprise there! 2. Henry IV Dudognon Heritage Cognac Paying $2 million (€1,807,689) for a bottle of Cognac is ridiculous, even if it has been aged for 100 years and made by the same company as Tequila Ley. Naturally, you would expect an equally expensive looking bottle, a 24-carat gold and sterling platinum bottle is, quite frankly, the least the manufacturers could do to justify such a price. It is studded with 6,500 diamonds. 3. Diva Vodka Only very rich divas could afford this $1 million drink (€903,844), hence the name, and as well as the flashy bottle that has a column of Swarovski crystals running through the centre, the production process is special too. It is triple filtered, first through ice, then Nordic birch charcoal and finally sand and precious gems.

wine connoisseur, scoring a perfect 100, and will set you back $130,000 (€117,499). 8. Legacy by Angostura This $25,000 rum (€22,596) has an interesting background, being created especially to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the independence of Trinidad and Tobago. The crystal rum decanter, designed by Prince Charles’ jeweller Asprey’s, contains a mix of 17 year old rums. 9. The Winston Cocktail High street cocktails seem cheap compared to this one at $14,000 (€12,653). Created by world renowned bartender Salvatore Calabrese, this mix of Cognac Croizet 1858 Cuvee Leonie, Chartreuse Viellissement Exceptionellement Prolonge with Grand Marnier Quintessence and a drop of Angostura Bitters should taste exceptionally good at that price. 10. Vielle Bon Secours Ale Craft beers are becoming increasingly popular although most are significantly cheaper than this special Belgian beer. Brewed by La Brassiere Caulier, it costs $1,200 (€1084) for a 12-litre bottle but, fortunately, home delivery is included, just in case it slips from your fingers on the way home. The world’s most expensive beer contains eight per cent alcohol.

4. Dalmore 62 The list would not be complete without whisky, of course, and only 12 bottles of this particular blend have ever been manufactured. On sale for $215,000 (€194,326) it was recently sold at a Singapore airport where an anonymous man willingly parted with the cash for this treasure. 5. Armand de Brignac Midas This particular drink is at least generous in size, holding a hefty 30 litres of Champagne in an unusually designed golden bottle and has appeared in both a Jay-Z and a Beyonce video. Even if it is a mere $187,750 (€169,696), this is one bottle you would not want to drop. 6. THE butt, backside, booty, junk in the trunk, glutes, and here is my favourite - “THE DERRIÈRE.” Whatever you choose to call it, we all own one but did you know that it the largest and in my book the most important muscle that you possess? Unfortunately it is also often the most neglected and under used, as many do not understand the complexities of the human body and how it depends heavily on the glutes to provide full structural support to the back, hips and knees. If you thought your bottom was just for sitting on... THINK AGAIN! Keeping your glutes strong through specific lower body exercises will help ward off all sorts of problems, back pain, and knee problems to name a few. Regular runners take note: WEAK GLUTES WILL HINDER YOUR RUNNING PROGRESS if you are not combining a strength training programme with your sessions. I have met many a runner with specific issues hindering their running performance. Once I put a glute/leg training programme in place they found that they were better able to perform their runs without the crucial glute muscles fatiguing, thus not causing other muscles to be over used and avoiding muscle damage and pain. Reduce staining of teeth with milky tea WANT whiter teeth? Then forget whitening toothpaste, simply add milk to your tea. A study has found that adding milk to your cuppa can stop teeth becoming stained and it was more effective than whitening toothpastes and just as good as some bleaching products. Researchers from Canada’s University of Alberta’s School
of Dentistry said the more tea is processed or oxidised, the higher its staining properties are, but by adding milk, it reduces the ability to stain the teeth. It is the tea’s tannins, the water soluble compounds that cause the bitter flavour that can stain the teeth and protein in milk, binds to the tannins in tea and prevents staining.
YOUR DERRIÈRE: Important muscle. Even if you regularly go to a gym, your glutes are simply not being activated for the majority of your day. You really need to make a conscious effort to incorporate some specific glute work into your workout programme. Swimming challenge awaits new date in Rincon de la Victoria ONE of the most important sports events of the Axarquia Region had to be postponed due to bad weather conditions. The swimming challenge ‘Brazadas Solidarias’ (Charitable Strokes), scheduled to take place on Sunday (August 23) in Rincon de la Victoria was sadly called off due to strong waves. More than 250 swimmers were registered to participate in this challenge. The Town Council is currently in discussions to decide whether it is viable to call swimmers and audience for a new date. All proceeds of the event were to be donated to the Vicente Ferrer Foundation, in favour of the integration of people with disabilities in India.

Brace! Brace! Conflict ahead
OUR VIEW Shoreham Airshow 2013
PEOPLES of the West are being conditioned to accept war Mike Walsh Mike, based in Mediterranean Spain, is an international journalist, author and professional writer.
AS the US - NATO squares up to modern Russia, pouring servicemen and arms on to European lands, the main battlefields, (in the event of war) would undoubtedly be on European soil. Situated on a geopolitical fault line, similar to that of 1914/1940 France and Belgium, much of Europe could soon resemble Hiroshima circa 1945. Conflicts have nothing to do with idealism or defence. I believe all wars are trade wars financed by bankers; wars are profitable. Britain’s wartime premier conceded as much when, in Bern, 1960, he expressed himself with candour: ‘Germany’s unforgivable crime was its attempt to loosen its economy out of the world trade system and to build up an own exchange system from which the world finance couldn’t profit anymore.’ Nations that tried to duck the petrodollar system met a similar fate; Iraq, Syria and Libya. Today, the nation following the Reich example is the Russian Reich. Action replay: Russia,
AIRSHOW: A disaster.
Extremely dangerous
NO-WIN SITUATION: War to save the dollar or economic collapse? its popular leader in particular, is being demonised. The peoples of the West are being conditioned to accept war ‘to protect the world for democracy.’ Of this democratic process the unelected and unelectable Winston Churchill was contemptuous: ‘The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter.’ Most now use the internet as their in-
formation highway. There are no longer frontiers between peoples, mainstream media now has competition and no longer is in a position to condition people for war. My earlier warnings are in keeping with those of an emerging erudite body of world opinion. It gives me no comfort to say prophecies that once brought scorn are now accepted as reality. The US is no longer the only world
power; yesterday’s empire, economists warn of a cataclysmic collapse of the US dollar during late September or early October. Europe faces a no-win situation; war to save the dollar or economic collapse? In the event of either it is estimated one billion people will experience unimaginable consequences. See, you’re better than one in a million; you are now one in a billion.
Keep on smiling regardless IT takes no effort to be polite and courteous to all of those that we meet Colin Bird A weekly look Each week, Colin brings his slightly off-thewall view of the world to the pages of EWN in his own irreverent style.
I KNOW we are a dwindling breed, but opening doors for ladies, giving up our seats on public transport and walking on the outside when accompanying a member of the opposite sex down the street - are all still as natural as breathing to many men of my generation. I would probably even tip my hat if I wore one. After all it’s not quantum physics, and it takes no effort to be polite and courteous to all of those that we meet, and persevering even when faced with a dark uncomprehending stare. And what an improved world we would live in if we always smiled and perhaps greeted passing strangers with a Good Morning or Buenos Dias. I would like to think that repeated efforts would reap rewards in the long run and it’s a sour mannered, bad assed individual indeed, who can hold out against such a determined assault. But it is dispiriting when a door is held for a lady and she simply barges through without a thank you, a nod, or a kiss my derrière - an occurrence that happens with depressing regularity here in
OPENING DOORS: Is still a natural action for men of my generation. Spain. Manners are a two way thoroughfare and appreciation from the recipient is a heart warming incentive to go on carrying out these simple but important observances. Why standards have plunged over the last two generations is beyond me. Perhaps it’s a cyclical thing - a passing phase - and as has so often happened in other areas throughout history, perhaps there will be a resurgence in the other direction at
THE terrible disaster at Shoreham airshow on August 22 killed at least 11 people and injured many others. While accidents of any sort can happen all too easily, this was not the first one to happen at Shoreham and the pilot of a World War II Hurricane airplane died in 2007 after crashing at the same show. Another airshow crash took place in Switzerland the day after Shoreham, killing a pilot whose plane crashed into a barn next to a home. Clearly then, air show stunts can be extremely dangerous. The UK claims to have some of the strictest regulations governing flying, yet despite those regulations different rules apply to air shows with some planes able to fly as near as 50 metres to the crowd. Also, the location of some air shows to major roads means that aerobatic manoeuvres can take place over busy, builtup areas. In the last five years there have been at least seven incidents at UK air shows, with four pilots killed as a result, and while neither spectators nor the public were victims of these accidents, steps need to be taken to prevent further tragedies. In the light of the terrible events at Shoreham and those incidents since 2010, wouldn’t it make sense to make a no-fly zone over busy areas to prevent such horror happening again?

Living well from builders buckets NOT only in gardens, but also in small patios and on apartment terraces Dick Handscombe
Gardening Corner By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.
IN theory, a few vegetables as well as herbs can be grown in pots, but what we normally regard as pots are not very successful, especially in the summer heat of Spanish gardens once temperatures rise above 20 degrees. For the past few weeks, our temperature in the shade hovers around 37 degrees, but vegetables, if watered every other day, are growing well in black builders buckets of 55 centimetres diameter, and of 65 centimetres elsewhere in semishaded corners of the garden. They include red and crinkly green lettuces, rocket, Swiss chard, purslane, carrots, cabbages, cauliflowers, stevia, cumin, horseradish, climbing yard long and butter beans, dwarf beans, tomatoes, nasturtiums for edible leaves, flowers and seed pods, several types of peppers and aubergines, courgettes, onions plus leeks producing seed for autumn sowing. Based on our now 12 years of experimenting with large tub growing along the lines of the concept of a ‘10-tub vegetable garden’ launched in our book
BUILDERS BUCKETS: Work well for small scale vegetable and herb growing. ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’ there are many benefits as described below. Twenty one proven benefits: 1. Small space required - You can build up a circle, square, oblong or row in one bucket units of just a quarter of a square metre. 2. High yield per square metre - Close planting works well and you have no unplanted areas and paths to worry about. 3. Speedy harvesting - If you chose vegetables regularly used and co-locate the salad and
ones for steaming for instance daily or twice daily harvesting takes just minutes. 4. Relatively inexpensive - If you hunt around, builders buckets are not expensive and second hand ones can be used if located. 5. Little waste, as number of plants controlled by your space. 6. Co-located salads - all the year round. 7. Accommodate small and expansive plants 8. No space for weeds - if one plants close to give shade
to roots. 9. Easy to use mutual mulching - for instance lettuces around aubergines. 10. Easy soil enrichment just makes good initial soil/compost/manure mixes and top up between crops. 11. Low water wastage - no sideways losses to dry earth. 12. Circular support frames for tomatoes, peppers and beans etc., for strength. 13. Rare insect and fungal attacks - no major area of vulnerable crops.
Bathroom need decorating? LOCAL flea markets, boot sales and classifieds ads can help SUMMER may be coming to an end and your thoughts could be turning to autumn colour schemes in the house, but don’t forget that there are other areas of the home that typically get forgotten. Did your bathroom get put to one side last time you redecorated? Or possibly it just needs a spruce up and you are short on design ideas? The bathroom might be the smallest room in the house, but it’s also one of the easiest to update, a fresh lick of paint, some new tiles or updated bathroom accessories is all you need.
JUST AN IDEA: An antique mirror may inspire you to run with an ancient Roman or Greek theme.
14. Companion plant - using mutually beneficial herbs and vegetables. 14. Instant filling of gaps to replace cleared crops - just pop in a few new plantlets from local market or garden centre. 15. Of interest - to owners and visitors. 16. Easy to move or reorganise - Nothing too heavy to pull around. 17. Feature or hidden away Part of mine is an island on the drive while other parts are in otherwise under used corners of
the garden. 18. Just grow what you need - Easy for children and the infirm as well as the totally strong and able. 19. Crop rotation possible by rotating between buckets. 21. Can have a floral centre Mine has a tall geranium. Yes this expanded small scale vegetable growing really does work and not only in gardens, but also in small patios and on apartment terraces. © Dick Handscombe www.gardenspain.com

The summer snake slithers away Cassandra Nash A weekly look - and not entirely impartial reaction to the Spanish political scene
SUMMER is an English-speaker’s silly season but Spain’s equivalent is a summer snake. Snakes turn up in unexpected places during a Spanish summer and made headlines in more innocent times. Innocence has fled but the name stuck and this summer’s snake is the Jorge Fernandez Diaz-Rodrigo Rato tryst which the Opposition is milking for all it is worth. Much has been said by the Interior minister and the former vice-president regarding their conversation at the ministry but none of it sounds convincing. Possibly Rato was asking for favours regarding his financial transgressions but all t h e g a r m e n t - ren d in g is a w a s te o f time. Fernandez Diaz is now in position where he could do nothing to help even if he wanted.

June sales up 19.4 per cent THE GENERAL Council of Notaries has published the encouraging information that the sale of homes in Spain saw a massive increase of 19.4 per cent in June 2015 compared to figures for June 2014. There was a total of 37,641 sales although the average price per square metre did fall a little to €1,260. This is the fourth consecutive month of increases and is the highest increase for a single month this year. Interestingly, whilst the sale of apartments both new and second hand increased by just under 21 per cent, the actual sales value fell by 0.7 per cent. This is quite different to the situation with individual homes which saw a steady growth in number of 14.5 per cent and an increase in price of a full 2 per cent. In addition, the number of mortgages granted has increased dramatically to over 16,000 in June with an average value of €121,445.

Golf course and major residential complex projects make progress
NEW GOLF COURSE: Will be the third one to be constructed in the Axarquia Region. CONSTRUCTION works of a new road that will access the future new golf course and residential complex of Velez-Malaga, valued at €300 million has been given the green light. This new golf course, called Juvigolf, to be constructed in Chilches, would be the third in the Axarquia Region, together with the ones in
Añoreta (Rincon de la Victoria) and Baviera Golf (Caleta de Velez). The project has already received approval from the Junta de Andalucia regional government and now the town council is designing the draft to create a new road that connects the new course with the road A-7 and the old N-340. Mayor of the town Antonio
Moreno Ferrer, told Spanish daily SUR, that the new road will be located in the roundabout that separates Rincon de la Victoria and Chilches, parallel to the Mercadona. The Juvigolf course will see an investment of up to €300 million, by a private investor, for the creation of an 18-hole course, 1,534 homes, out of which 460 will be subsidised, a
four-star hotel, restaurants and sports facilities, amongst other facilities. In total, this humongous site will occupy 314,000 square metres of the town. It is expected this golf course will be ready to be enjoyed between 2020 and 2025, and the town council will see a €7.5 profit from its development.
Many Spaniards looking to move out of the cities into the country PEOPLE want to find cheaper properties and hopefully improve their economic position in the long term By John Smith WITH the steady turnaround in the Spanish economy, the demand for a new property is beginning to increase. Many foreign investors are buying property in big cities and better known tourist destinations, as they believe that these purchases will see the biggest return on their investment. A significant number of Spaniards, however, are considering relocation to rural areas or small villages provided that they have an opportunity to work. People want to find cheaper properties and thus hopefully improve their economic position in the long term. Many feel that moving to the countryside or back to the village where they were born would make sound financial sense. Property is less expensive, and the cost of living is also lower.
Family considerations can also play a part as couples want their children to grow up somewhere safe. Family considerations can also play a part in this migration as couples want their children to grow up somewhere that is safe and environmentally friendly with plenty of open space, whilst others need to look after an elderly family member. The cities and beaches will never see a completely foreign population but there is no doubt that a number of Spaniards will take a long look at the possibility of moving to the country.
SMALL VILLAGE: Significant numbers are considering relocation provided there is work available.

Common points for home and classic car THOUSANDS of homes in Spain are in some of the best locations with the best views but have been neglected John Graham The property expert
THE other day I was looking at some classic cars, an E-type jaguar, several Ferraris and other classic car makes from years gone by and they all had one thing in common, they had all been beautifully restored to their former glory and they all looked like they had just rolled off the production line. Obviously the classic cars had been restored by professional experts and as a Technical Architect I really admired the company’s professional eye for detail and workmanship, producing true works of art. So you may be thinking what has classic cars got to do with property, well quite a lot actually, there are thousands of older properties in Spain in some of the best locations with the best views that have unfortunately been neglected, but like a classic car each property can be restored by
MODERN LOOK: Old properties can be restored by a professional. professionals to look like a modern new home again and maximise the properties’ location and views. The other point restored classic cars and renovated properties have in common is that their value is substantially increased, making them either highly collectable or
highly desirable and very importantly, easy to sell. Over my 30 years in the real estate industry I have seen many properties restored badly and also really well done, the difference always seems to come down to good quality control, or lack of it.
Like a classic car restoration, your property needs to have a top professional in charge of the renovation project, that’s why you should always hire a professional surveyor to act on your behalf as the owner, to look after your interests and to ensure the work is carried out to the highest standard. If the renovation of your property is below standard you will lose money as the value will be less than you had planned and will lack the level of desirability of a top finished renovation making your property harder to sell. So next time you see a professionally restored classic car looking in showroom condition, think about what your property would look like and be worth, if you renovated your older property with a professional surveyor acting on your behalf. If you would like more details on renovating your home please contact me for more information. John Graham. Fellow of The Architecture & Surveyors Institute. Gk.ipad@me.com

€15 million for Ferrari RM SOTHEBY’S have sold at auction in Monterey, California a 1964 Ferrari 250 LM for $17.6m (in excess of €15m). The car, which was one of only 32 built did not have a pedigree of past celebrity ownership but was used for racing and was in original mechanical condition.
Production in UK falls THE number of cars produced in the UK declined by 11 per cent during July. Happily, this isn’t a major cause for concern as some plants are retooling for new models, which resulted in early annual shutdowns. In addition, the summer months historically see a slowdown in consumer demand for new cars.
New Mini is more maxi A NEW style Mini Clubman is being launched in the UK on October 31. It is a larger more roomy estate model with an increased internal cockpit as well as more room for luggage and a hinged rear door which opens to the side.

Updated SEAT Ibiza 2016 gathers praise WIDE range of choices in both diesel and petrol versions ALTHOUGH SEAT are due to launch a new design of the ever popular Ibiza in a few years’ time, they have taken the opportunity to give the car a major overhaul so that it can continue to be a meaningful rival to both the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo. With a range of engines from one litre to a 1.4 litre turbo version and three different body styles, the five-door Ibiza, the three-door Ibiza SC Sport Coupé and the Ibiza ST Sport Tourer estate there is a wide range of choices in both diesel and petrol versions and naturally a wide range of pricing as well. The basic version sells for around €9,900 and comes with a change of body design from earlier
versions together with a vast range of upgrades within the driver’s cabin. Apart from DAB radio and docking ports, SEAT has teamed up with Samsung to offer a wide range of optional extras. In addition, both the suspension and steering have been adapted to offer a more comfortable and responsive ride. According to SEAT, who have sold over five million Ibizas worldwide, the car appeals to a relatively young audience and is particularly popular with women. Everything suggests that this up dated version will continue to appeal.

GINS play Usain ‘Bolts’ to glory at Añoreta PLENTY of sporting action last week... for everybody! From Back Page
AT Añoreta on Monday August 17, the Texan Scramble winners were, John Millward, Lola Montero, Frank Ferdinales and Rod Oldham, with a gross 71, net 60. The runners-up were, Keith Taylor, Peter Garner, Granville Hirst and Pete Thompson with a gross 70, net 61. This was a cooler day with much less humidity which saw only three shots covering all four teams, so everybody played pretty well. The winners had three two's which proved to be enough to see off the opposition. At Barvaria on Tuesday August 18, the Texas Scramble was won by Ray Craig 8, Ian Paterson 18, Clive Akid 20 and Diana Elliott 24, with 53.6. The second team was, Bob Blair 13, Russell Dick 19, Cliff Elliott 23 and Paula Vickerman 36 on 54.1. In third place was Derek Sibson 14, Rob Nicholson 19, Colin McMorris 23 and Marlyse Blair 36, with 55.4. With seven birdies and only one bogie! Ian’s perfect chip in on the 18th hole ensured victory over Team Blair by half a shot!

Bigger and better golfing competition THOUSANDS of golfers participate Getting in the swing with Campbell Lamont
By Tony Myles THIS is the fifth year for The Campbell Lamont Golf Leagues, which started as a local competition for golf societies and quickly expanded into a major event in the amateur golf calendar. Because of the instant success Campbell decided to offer it to other areas within Spain and inside one year several thousand golfers had responded. This solid base of competitors provided the launch pad for further expansion and just last year Campbell
introduced his Golf Leagues to societies in Scotland and Wales increasing the number of players to well over 10,000. The latest news is that Iceland (no not the frozen food company) have now taken this competition very seriously and so hundreds of Icelandic golfers are now eager to qualify. The universal interest in the competition means that over the next year or so it will be introduced to 16 different countries throughout Europe. Why is it so popular? Let’s start at the end and work backwards. The “All Expenses Paid” Grand Final will be held at the La Sella Golf resort in the Costa Blanca. This venue features one of the premier golf courses in Spain and has proven an excellent test of golf for players of all handicaps. It will involve four rounds played over Saturday and Sunday. The winners will receive an abun-

Each of the 16 pairs who reach the Grand Final will be hosted at the five star Denia Marriott hotel for the duration of their stay. This will include breakfast and evening meals with the exception of the Saturday evening when they will be free to travel into any of the local towns. Everyone will be invited to attend the Gala Dinner on the Sunday, which will include the presentations to the winners and runners-up. So what is the catch? What is the entry fee? * Entry into this competition is restricted to groups of 12 or more
golfers who play regularly and adhere to a recognised handicap system. * Each group must register their intention to compete and provide details of their members who will make up their teams. * There are no additional overheads as the group will merely label four or more of their regular events as Campbell Lamont League Qualifiers. * Having completed the qualification series within the group the names of the top two players are then confirmed to the organisers who will notify the group of any local and national preliminary rounds. * There is no entry fee.
In summary 1. Register your team. 2. Play your regular games. 3. Determine your winners. 4. Advance to the Regional Finals. 5. Come to the 5 Star La Sella Golf Resort, Spain in June for an all-expenses-paid golf-fest. Register now at www.clgolfleagues.com
