World’s top destination MALLORCA has outstripped Disney World, Orlando, in number of visitors

By Staff Reporter The world’s most popular tourist destination is Mallorca, according to website HotelBeds.

The island is even more popular than destinations like Disney World in Orlando, and is followed in popularity in Spain by Barcelona, Tenerife, Benidorm and the Costa del Sol. Mallorca is full to overflowing with tourists in hotels and apartments. In June, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) confirmed that holiday lets on the island reached the highest occupancy levels in

Spain. The island’s favourite destinations are Alcudia and Calvia, and it appears that tourism is due to continue along the same lines at least until the end of September, a month which is seeing figures rise each year.

The British, German, French and Italian markets are providing Mallorca with even more visitors than in other years, and growth within the Spanish market is at around 15 per cent.

HotelBeds concludes that the amount of activities available to tourists is also rising to keep up with demand.

Meanwhile, German model Claudia Schiffer was also spotted last week at one of Mallorca’s most exclusive and expensive restaurants, the Flanigan, which is a favourite with King Juan Carlos I.

By Carol Irving AUGUST sees one of the most spectacular events in the racing calendar in Spain take place on the sandy beaches of Sanlucar de Barrameda, Cadiz. The beach in the Bajo de Guia area of town becomes a horse racing track during August evenings with pure thoroughbred race horses running at full speed during the late afternoon, creating a stunning backdrop of some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in Cadiz.

No permits for commercial areas THE Balearic Parliament has approved the law which will stop permits being granted for the creation of large commercial areas for six months.

The party members complained that the decree has been carried out in a rush and that it would have been more appropriate for the islands to approve the delay before starting to write up their plans.

The decree will prevent the suspension of the Balearic Commerce Law approved during the previous term of office.

The Constitutional Court has accepted an appeal from the central government which con-

siders that the commerce law violates state jurisdiction.

The councillor for Work, Commerce and Industry, Iago Negueruela, said the delay was needed to protect the territory and prevent legal insecurity.

ALL authorisations to burn garden or agricultural refuse were annulled by the Balearic Nature Institute (Ibanat) earlier this week due to the high temperatures expected all over the island, it was announced on Twitter.

Bottle attack Woman arrested A GERMAN woman, 22, was arrested in s’Arenal for allegedly attacking a couple with a broken bottle for no apparent reason.

She attacked the arresting officers and claimed she had been robbed by the male victim.

Ella Festival LGTB friendly THE Ella International Lesbian Festival will be held in Palma again this year from September 1 to 9. The councillor for Tourism, Commerce and Work, Joana Maria Adrover, said the city aims to be “LGTB friendly.”

By Staff Reporter ‘PIRATE’ ships are damaging business for marine charter tours in the Balearic Islands.

According to a local Spanish daily, around 1,000 vessels from abroad are available to be hired by tourists, but pay no taxes in Spain.

Despite the number of tourists currently on the islands, companies report that business is down by between 5 and 10 per cent.

The ‘pirate’ ships are promoted on the internet and as they don’t have overheads, are able to offer their services for less.

Meanwhile, legitimate companies are having to wash sheets from their vessels at home just so they can save on cleaning fees.

In addition, no-one is interested in taking over such businesses because they are no longer considered to be profitable.

Drunk German hits officer A GUARDIA CIVIL officer, 38, was hit by a speeding vehicle while he was controlling traffic at an accident on the Ponent motorway between Palma and Andratx.

The German driver of the vehicle, who was travelling with his wife and three children, fled the scene but has now been remanded in prison.

According to witnesses, he was zigzagging from one lane to another attempting to overtake other vehicles and collided head-on with the officer, who was sent flying several metres.

He also almost hit a second officer, who moved just in time.

A chase began immediately and the vehicle was intercepted in Cala Mayor, where the driver also attempted to escape by driving in the wrong direction.

The driver and his wife were both found to be drunk.

The officer was attended at the scene then taken to Palmaplanas Clinic by ambulance.

Natural marine life in danger HUMAN activity degrades natural habitats

By Staff Reporter AN average of 33 cetaceans are found every year dead or dying on the coasts of the Balearic Islands.

The is an indicator of the state of marine ecosystems and the influence of human ac-

tivity, which degrades natural habitats, such as increased marine traffic, chemical and acoustic contamination, and excessive fishing, according to the Environmental Council’s Service for Species’ Protection which has been tracking cetaceans since 1993.

A favourite for wealthy buyers GERMAN real estate agency Engel & Völkers reports that Mallorca is one of the most popular areas for foreigners to purchase luxury properties in Spain.

In fact, during the first three months of this year, the price of luxury property in Mallorca has risen by 10 to 15 per cent.

Young thieves take sweets and crisps TWO young adults and three girls aged 16 and 17 were arrested in Palma for stealing sweets, crisps and other items from a kiosk.

An off-duty police officer noticed while parking his mo-

torbike that the top box had been forced open. He spotted the youths attempting to do the same to other vehicles and when he approached , he saw they had sweets, chewing-gum, beers and ice-creams in a box.

Traffic related crimes SENTENCES for traffic crimes fell by 8.2 per cent in the Balearic Islands in 2014 compared to the previous year.

The islands’ courts handed down 2,707 sentences, most of which were for driving under the influence of alcohol (1,854).

Throughout Spain there were 92,682 sentences, 9,300 more than in 2013. More than 53,790 were for drunk driving, 9 per cent more than the previous year.

Spain has the fifth highest rate of road deaths per million inhabitants in the EU, with 36 in 2014.

Cocaine in cakes A RESIDENT of Palma, 42, was arrested at Barcelona-El Prat Airport when he arrived from Bogota, Colombia, and was found to be carrying almost four kilos of cocaine hidden in cakes.

Family hurt FOUR people, including two children aged 11 and 14, were injured in a head-on collision between two cars on the Llucmajor-S’Estanyol road. It appears the children’s father, a German national, failed to give way at a junction.

Ex-boyfriend held for murder THE accused attempted suicide at the police station just hours after the crime

By Staff Reporter A MAN, 38, has been remanded in prison for allegedly killing his exgirlfriend, 33, in the Sant Jordi district of Palma in the early hours of last Friday.

He was questioned by a judge at Son Espases Hospital where he remained following an attempt to commit suicide at the police station just hours after the crime.

Police believe that the man arrived at the victim’s house unannounced. They had split up in midJuly after two years. He parked his vehicles a few streets away when he had always parked outside the door.

In fact, it was towed away because it was obstructing traffic.

He was arrested and taken to hospital as police believed he had consumed drugs and alcohol in an attempt to kill himself. Several hours later he was released from hospital and taken to the police station.

Police believe he may have faked his condition in an attempt to reduce his responsibility for his ex-girlfriend’s death.

Tobacco sales up for Balearic Islands THE Balearic Islands is one of the few regions in Spain where takings from tobacco sales have risen.

The Spanish State earned €4.37 million during the first six months of the year from tobacco tax, which is 0.87 per cent less than the same

period in 2014. However, in the Balearic Islands, takings were up by 0.92 per cent.

Eighty per cent of the price of a packet of cigarettes accounts for taxes.

In the first six months of the year, sales fell by 2.4 per cent to 1.10 billion packets.

Several hours later he became agitated and injured himself in his cell by knocking himself against the walls. Police prevented him from sustaining serious injuries but he was returned to hospital.

He threatened to commit suicide if he was taken back to the police station so doctors decided not to release him.

He has now been discharged from hospital and entered prison.

He insisted while giving his statement to the judge that he had consumed drugs and alcohol.

His phone and the victim’s are being examined by police to ascertain whether they had communicated at the house before the crime.

Gemma Vich Ramis is the first victim of gender violence in the Balearic Islands this year and the 23rd in Spain. She had not previously reported her partner for abuse.

She had ended the relationship because she found it hard to live with him. He was said to be jealous and have a drinking problem.

He had a prior conviction for drink-driving in 2002.

Ancient remains found ANDRATX Council has confirmed that archaeological remains have been found at the current site of the town hall.

On July 20, an archaeological dig began in Castell de Son Mas. It has uncovered post-Talaiotic structures, which may be the remains of a dwelling.

More than 2,000 pieces, including vases, amphorae, recipients and pottery, have been found, most of which are from between the first centuries BC and AD All of them need to be analysed but they confirm that there were settlements in the

area in different eras.

Around 20 youths will continue work for at least a week, led by Juan Carlos Llado and Noemi Prats Pico, in a project which aims to increase the historical knowledge of the town between the Bronze and Medieval ages.

Natural gas is heading for Alcudia ALCUDIA Bay will have a natural gas supply from 2016.

Company Redexis has completed work on a pipeline from the Son Reus station to Alcudia via Inca, and covering all the towns on the Palma-In-

ca toll motorway. It will also be connected to the national network, which links the mainland to Mallorca via an underwater pipeline.

However, work is still needed to complete the network, which is due to start in September.

BULLFIGHTING: The city’s most important fight of the year is due to be held today.

Inspected for deficiencies TECHNICIANS from different departments visited the bullring AROUND 10 technicians from different municipal departments of Palma City Hall inspected the bullring to check for deficiencies.

Architects, vets, medics, firemen and other experts visited the bullring for around 90 minutes to determine whether there are reasons to ban bullfights or

concerts from being held.

This comes a week after the city was declared anti-bullfighting, although the city’s most important bullfight of the year is due to be held today (Thursday) with three of the current top bullfighters in Spain. This is because the bullring has a regional licence and the ban must first

be accepted by the Balearic Government and current regional animal protection laws would have to be changed.

The company which manages the bullring doesn’t need to request a permit from the city hall to hold a bullfight, although it does for any other type of event.

Raising awareness of diabetes Our Euro Women series is featuring women who have made a success of their lives in Spain. These outstanding ladies have been shattering glass ceilings whether in business, charity work or sports.

Anne Bowles has a busy life supporting diabetic sufferers and fundraising for charity.

ANNE BOWLES is a woman who possesses an incredible amount of energy and enthusiasm which has been the key factor in how she has achieved so much in her life here in Spain.

After marrying Frank in England in 1975, Anne was already showing the world what talents she had when they both began singing in a barbershop choir in Surrey. She tells me that was one of the best periods of her life as she enjoyed socialising, organising, and travelling to many singing events, entering into all she did with a passion.

Anne and Frank decided to make a new life in Spain, so they bought a home here in 1975, and in no time at all their social life was booming. One unfortunate setback was that Frank suffered with diabetes and there was little help in Spain at that time for anyone with similar problems.

A friend of theirs, Martin, also had diabetes and this was a condition that needed to be addressed as well as also raising awareness in others. It was this realisation that initiated the good work that Anne is continuing to do today.

The Diabetic Support Group (DSG) was founded by Anne and Frank Bowles with the co-operation of Martin and Barbara Rhead in 2003 and the group has helped hundreds of sufferers come to terms with their condition and lead a normal life.

Anne is a believer that knowledge is power, and this was her

With much help from the local Lions group, the organisation began its operation with the added support of Dr Francisco M Gomez Trujillo of the Beafranin Clinic in Fuengirola, who had studied in the USA, and also a Finnish doctor, Dr Matti Tolonen, a nutritionist.

After years of helping others, Anne also became a member of La Cala Lions and both her and husband Frank were

active in organising fundraising events such as golf tournaments and other functions. Frank was a golf fanatic, so he was approached to write about golf, which then led to bigger things. Anne and Frank began another project.

Together they were heavily involved in the inauguration of the Costa del Sol Golf News in 2005, which grew from strength to strength due to Anne’s networking and massive input to the growth of the business. She juggled her

commitments with the Lions and her diabetic support group with her social networking that made the Costa del Sol Golf News a household name, and still she had the energy for more.

In her free time she still performed and organised events for the Barbershop Choir Spain, and raised money for charity too. Sadly, some years later she lost the love of her life, Frank, but that has made her stronger, as she remembers how he believed in her and gave her the confidence to achieve so much.

Anne went on to be President of La Cala Lions last year and within that time raised €80,000 for various beneficiaries. When asked what kind of people she preferred to be with, she said “I like positive people and those with a good sense of humour. Life is precious so we have to rise above difficult situations. I like people who are firm but fair.”

Anne has granted many wishes of others, and asked if she had a wish that she would like granted, she said with her usual sense of humour “Yes... to have long, curly hair and no wrinkles.”

Mallorca pilots die in Girona accident INVESTIGATION is to be carried out

CHARGING POINTS: There will be six across Mallorca for electric cars.

Across the island with electricity ELECTRIC company Endesa has launched a network of six recharging points across Mallorca for electric cars.

The eCAR Rapid Auto Charge Club, the company says, ensures that any electric vehicle can safely travel the island.

The company explains that this is a pioneering idea in Spain and allows drivers to

gain autonomy, peace of mind and savings, which are essential to promoting sustainable travelling.

There is an average 35 kilometres from one station to another and each has the three types of chargers currently available. There will be a club card and users will be able to pay at the end of the month for what they have used.

MICROLIGHT AIRCRAFT: Crashed into a shed near the airfield and caught fire.

TWO men from Binissalem died when their microlight aircraft crashed in Girona.

During take-off, the aircraft crashed into a shed on a property near the airfield and caught fire.

The head of instructors at the Viladamat airfield, Jordi Sierra, was one of the first people on the scene, and although he and another attempted to put out the

flames, they had to wait for the fire brigade as the aircraft was fully fuelled, planning to head to Castellon as part of a route through Spain the two men were carrying out.

According to the instructor, the accident occurred due to several factors, including air density, but mainly bad luck, as the craft took off a little early, lifted almost

three metres, but leaned to the right with its own weight, causing a wing to touch the ground and then crashed into the only nearby building.

There was no technical problem with the craft and the pilots were experienced.

They are believed to have died upon impact. An investigation will be carried out to determine the cause of the accident.

Legal camping area planned for town CAPDEPERA Town Hall plans to set up a legal camping area with basic services in one of the town’s green areas.

The aim is to offer an alternative to illegal camping which has long been a problem in protected areas such as Cala Mesquida or Son Jaumell.

Several years ago, an agreement was reached

between the Local Police and the Guardia Civil Nature Protection Service, Seprona, to increase surveillance during peak times of the year and this has led to a fall in illegal camping.

The mayor, Rafel Fernandez, says that fines are issued where necessary and people are more aware of the importance of protecting the environment.

Sentence reduced for lack of surgery BANNED from being within 500 metres

By Staff Reporter PALMA Provincial Court has reduced the sentence of a man who beat his ex-girlfriend from two years to six months in prison because she didn’t require surgery.

In April 2014, the man attacked his exgirlfriend in his home in Palma after she spent the night with him. She sustained a broken nose, bruised face and several other injuries.

He was sentenced to two years and three months in prison by Palma criminal court for a crime of causing bodily harm, but he appealed the sentence on the grounds that she did not require surgery and was only treated at a health centre. He argued that he should be sentenced for a misdemeanour, not a crime.

He is banned from being within 500 me-

tres of her or communicating with her for five years and must pay her â‚Ź2,600 in compensation.

A man, 40, was arrested at a hotel in Palma Beach at the weekend for allegedly beating his girlfriend, 46, because she didn’t want to tell him about a comment she had posted on Facebook. She had come from Caceres to spend a few days with him and he asked her about a comment she had posted on Facebook regarding their relationship. As she refused to answer, they began to argue and he allegedly punched her in the face and dragged her around their hotel room.

She managed to flee to reception where staff helped her and called the police while the security guard held the attacker until Local Police came to arrest him and charged him with causing bodily harm.

DESPITE being ordered by Palma City Hall to close, the chill-out lounge at Sant Carles fortress remains open.

The City Hall reports that the establishment had no opening licence or building permit.

It is located in the fortress which was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.

The councillor for City Planning said that the work to prepare it for opening was carried out illegally and that although it had a licence from the Port Authorities, as it is not used for maritime activities, it also needs authorisation from the city hall.

The permit to carry out the work was reportedly requested when it was almost finished and the work does not match the original project which only allowed for tables and chairs to be located in the existing building. However, a swimming pool was built and the level was raised so that the terrace had sea views.

NADAL: Centre will offer education to youths.

Rafa Nadal centre to open next term THE Rafa Nadal Foundation Centre, which will offer complementary education to more than 200 youths in La Soledad district of Palma is due to open next term.

Work is going ahead at a good pace and should be completed by the end of September. Meanwhile, the programme, which focuses on sports to teach values such as camaraderie, respect and hard work, is being attended by around 50 children and youths aged six to 16 at facilities provided by Palma City Hall. They are in situations of poverty and social exclusion.

JUDGE Castro, handling the Noos case, has returned €735,111 to the Infanta Cristina following the court’s decision to reduce her bail fee by €2 million.

The fee, for civil liability, was set by the judge at €2.6 million to cover the consequences of the two tax-related crimes with which she is charged.

However, Palma Court considered it excessive and reduced it to €449,525, to which the judge responded by

immediately returning €735,111 as she had paid the court €1.77 million so far.

The money had come from the sale of the luxury home she owned with her husband, Iñaki Urdangarin in Barcelona. The remaining quantity ensures that fines will be covered.

One of her lawyers, Miquel Roca, said that he was pleased with the decision and that the Infanta should be treated by the legal system like anybody else.

Plans for the winter THERE are 190 inland establishments which attract tourists THE Balearic Government plans to open a public tender for airlines to operate flights between the islands and the main European markets during the winter.

The aim is to solve the problem of seasonality which exists between October and March when the frequency and number of flights falls by 75 per cent.

The General Manager of Ports and Airports, Xavier Ramis, says that

tourism products are required so that launching more flights is profitable. If this is possible, it will benefit the islands commercially and provide work for people throughout the winter.

This summer is proving to be the best in three years for inland tourism in the Balearic Islands, but while the months from May to September register good occupancy levels and profitability, be-

tween October and April, 98 per cent of inland accommodation closes, and this is mainly due to the lack of airline connections.

There are 190 inland establishments in the Balearic Islands, which attract both Spanish and European tourists. They complain that there are few flights in the winter and those available are more expensive.

Cilla dies at home in Spain, aged 72

The much-loved star passed away on Saturday, August 1, at her home in Estepona on the Costa del Sol. The coroner confirmed on Tuesday, August 4, that the star died following a stroke. She had been sunbathing, and lost her balance as she stood up, hitting her head as she fell.

The blow knocked her unconscious, and she would not have suffered during the stroke that resulted.

Cilla’s career spanned more than 50 years, from huge hits in the 60s with Anyone Who Had a Heart, and Alfie, to a staple of Saturday night primetime TV in the 80s and 90s, presenting Surprise, Surprise and Blind Date.

Veronica White, she changed her name to Cilla Black, but became a beloved household name simply as Cilla.

She was discovered when working as cloakroom attendant at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, and her distinctive singing voice won the support of The Beatles, who championed her career in the early days.

Although retired in recent years, she was still regularly heard from in the media, often accompanied on nights out by her good friend and fellow scouser Paul O’Grady.

In 2014, BAFTA honoured her with an outstanding contribution to television award.

RESCUED: Seven people were taken off the yacht before it sank offshore.

Yacht sinks off Playa del Mago A YACHT, with seven people on board, sank off Playa del Mago in Calvia.

The yacht reportedly began to take on water and the captain headed to the coast, getting close enough for the crew to be assisted by lifeguards who were in the area.

All seven people were rescued although the captain ini-

tially refused to leave the yacht.

Local Police, Civil Protection, Guardia Civil and Lifeguards, as well as paramedics, arrived on the scene while the boat sank in an area with an approximate depth of three metres.

The beach was then evacuated as a precaution although there was no obvious danger

and no fuel spillage. The yacht was later removed by the insurance company and an investigation into the incident was launched.

In a separate incident, the 84year-old captain of a sailing ship taking part in the King’s Cup was rescued by lifeguards after falling overboard with no life jacket.

By Staff Reporter LEGAL foundation PrisonLaw has raised €10,000 through crowdfunding to pay for legal aid for a man who has spent 11 years in jail for two rapes he claims he did not commit.

Romano Liberto van der Dussen, 42, was sentenced by Malaga Provincial Court to 15-and-a-half years in prison for sexual assault, robbery and causing bodily harm.

He has always denied the charges and refused to enter a rehabilitation programme for rapists as he says this would amount to admitting he was guilty. Therefore, he has never been granted parole and is currently in prison in Mallorca.

On August 10, 2003, three young women claimed to have been beaten and sexually assaulted in identical attacks in different areas of

The Dutchman was arrested on September 2 that year based on a photo ID. According to his lawyer, he was on police files for having attacked his ex-girlfriend and a

In 2007, a DNA match was found to Briton Mark Philip Dixie, arrested in the UK for raping and strangling 18-year-old model Sally Ann Bowman in 2005 and sentenced to 34

Despite the Spanish authorities knowing this, the Supreme Court will not yet annul the sentence and said the DNA evidence which could prove the Dutchman innocent needs to be confirmed a second time by a Forensic Scientist in the UK and also compared by the Spanish police.

If it is confirmed Dixie’s DNA matches the samples from the crime scene, van der Dussen can then request another revision.

PrisonLaw is a foundation which supports Dutch prisoners abroad. Van der Dussen was not brought back to Holland to serve his sentence because he lived in Spain at the time of his arrest.

Sustainable transport THE Mallorca Railway Services have announced that throughout August, bicycles will be allowed on all trains.

The exception is the 7.23am train from Manacor (the 4904) and trains which are very full, in which case, the inspector can refuse entrance to anyone with a bicycle as it may prevent people from moving in case of an accident.

Users had been complaining that they could not access many trains with their bikes.

Meanwhile, almost 500 metres of new cycle tracks will link the existing lanes and connect the districts of Son Oliva, Son Fortesa, Arxiduc and l’Olivera in Palma.

Once work ends in the autumn, the cycle lane will be extended to the Soller road.

No plans for second casino project THE Balearic Government does not have plans to put the project for another casino out for public tender at this time.

The Council for Work, Commerce and Industry signed documents which put the regional

licence required for such a project, on hold.

The project which was due to be carried out was the Gran Casino Teatro Balear in Palma’s Plaza del Olivar, but it was not granted municipal per-

mits because it violated laws for the use of the Historical Centre of Palma.

The government explained that there are currently other priorities but the project may be carried out later.

Bank clients across Europe have their savings protected in the event of bank failure. There is a limit to this deposit guarantee, and the UK’s limit will be reduced from £85,000 to £75,000 from 1st January 2016.

During the banking crisis, the EU issued a directive to ensure that all European countries have a guarantee scheme to refund bank depositors up to €100,000 should the financial institution be unable to pay claims against it, for example if they have stopped trading or been declared in default. This was designed to give savers peace of mind and prevent a run on a troubled bank. Spain has the Fondo de Garantía de Depósitos, while the UK has the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).

The UK’s limit is set to a Sterling amount equivalent to €100,000, which was £85,000 at the time in December 2010.

Under the EU directive, the Bank of England’s Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) is required to recalculate the FSCS limit every five years. On 3rd July the PRA announced that it will reduce its guarantee to £75,000 to be in line with the current exchange rate. The Euro has fallen against the Pound in recent months, impacting the deposit guarantee.

The current limit of £85,000 will be maintained until the end of 2015. This gives depositors time to plan and adjust to the change if they wish, to ensure their funds have suitable protection.

UK Bank Deposit Guarantee Cut By £10,000

By Peter Worthington, Senior Partner, Blevins Franks A second, more positive change in the UK is that from 3rd July, depositors with temporary high balances will be protected up to £1 million for six months from the date of deposit. This protects people who have sold a property, received an inheritance, etc, until they have time to move their funds into other arrangements or spread the risk between institutions.

For both Spain and the UK’s compensation scheme, savings above the guarantee limit could be lost if your bank fails.

The guarantee is per individual, so where a couple holds an account in joint names it is protected up to €200,000/£150,000.

Note however that where different banks form part of the same banking group, the guarantee limit covers the whole group, not the individual bank.

Many expatriates in Spain have savings in Jersey, Guernsey or Isle of Man. It is important to note that banks in these jurisdictions are not covered by the UK FSCS. If a bank there failed, you would need to rely on the local guarantee scheme, where the compensation limit is £50,000.

For peace of mind, it is advisable to keep bank deposits per banking group below the compensation limit in that jurisdiction.

The only certain way for investors to achieve security from institutional failure is through a state controlled investor protection regime. Luxembourg stands out among EU states with its strong culture of investor protection. It has a regime that provides maximum security to investors without limit.

To protect your capital, you also need to consider the risk/return relationship with

any asset, whether it is shares, property or cash in the bank. You could be exposed to more risk than is justified by the return potential of the asset. With interest rates so low, depending on the amount of money you have in the bank and your circumstances and objectives, there may be better places for your money.

Her mother led a noisy protest demanding that the authorities continue their search for Malen.

Malen Zoe, who was 15 when she disappeared in December 2013, was reportedly heading to her boyfriend’s

home in Son Ferrer, but never arrived at her destination.

She was wearing pink shoes, a checked shirt, blue denim jacket, torn trousers and carrying a bright green skateboard. She is thin, about 1.60m tall, with long, straight brown hair.

According to her father she caught a bus and got off outside a Magaluf theme park.

She called her boyfriend and asked him if she could go to his house, because she had forgotten her own house

he may have been abusive towards her. She also reportedly refused to talk to her mother because she allegedly put Malen and her brother out on the streets with nowhere to go following an argument. Her new partner had reportedly threatened to kill Malen’s father.

Her father, who offered an €80,000 reward for clues leading to her, was arrested in July last year for allegedly abusing a woman. He was later released with charges.

Prosecutor maintains attempted murder MAN had reportedly been drinking

THE Public Prosecution is still asking for 14 years in prison for a man, 51, who allegedly attempted to poison his two children.

The events took place in their home in Palma in February last year when his wife was sleeping.

He got the two children, aged 21 and six, in his own bed and filled a bowl with hydrochloric acid and bleach which released a gas that could have killed them in a short space of

time, as he had closed the doors and windows.

He then allegedly got into bed with them.

However, his daughter, who has a schizophrenic disorder and is certified 46 per cent disabled, awoke and finding herself unable to breathe, feeling sick and coughing constantly, took her brother and left the room. Both were admitted to hospital with intoxication from the gas.

The man had reportedly been drinking that evening but the prosecutor insists he knew what he was doing, which is why he is facing charges for attempted murder.

ELCHE’S Mystery Play, or ‘Festa’, is one of the most renowned theatrical performances in the world. The sacred musical drama depicts the death, the passage into Heaven (known as the Assumption) and the crowning of the Virgin Mary. It is performed every year in two acts on August 14 and 15 in the city.

More than 300 volunteers are involved in the play each year. It is sung entirely in Valencian and some Latin and has been performed at the Basilica of Santa Maria for centuries. Its origins are believed to date back to around the 13th century, although some historians would put its origins at nearer the 15th century.

The Mystery Play is also famous for its split level stage which includes the vertical ‘celestial’ stage, which descends from the dome of the basilica. The play is part of the city’s identity and heritage and the perseverance and affection of the people of Elche have converted the Mystery Play into the last surviving performances of its kind.

CAMPILLOS has joined the growing list of Malaga towns which have banned circuses and other attractions with animals, which could encourage animal cruelty.

Record fines for auto industry FORMED as recently as 2013, Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia, CNMC (National Markets and Competition Commission) has been investigating the auto industry in Spain.

WITH Greece having reached an agreement which ensured a bailout, keeping the country in the Eurozone, the relatively weak Euro has managed to trade within a tight range. Business, consumer and economic sentiment seem to be higher than ever and, as analysts forecast, Mario Draghi’s quantitative easing measures could bring about a much-needed boost to inflation.

In recent developments, comments from Germany’s independent economic advisers that countries should be able to leave the Euro as a ‘last resort’ could imply that the worries are still not over for Greece. The Syriza party has been criticised for plotting to leave the Eurozone as it was also revealed that the former finance

minister had a blueprint prepared for Greece to run a parallel banking system including reverting to the Drachma.

Markets will look for further direction in

currency movements, as the focus turns towards monetary policy in the major economies. With the US and the UK having signalled the possibility of likely interest rates hikes in the next

few quarters respectively, the Euro could come under sustained pressure. Having been forced to inject further liquidity into the economy to boost deflationary pressures in the Eurozone, the single bloc currency could be considerably volatile leading up to and after the Federal Reserve FOMC meeting, which was scheduled for July 29. Should the Federal Reserve send out a hawkish tone and an outline/framework to exit its monetary easing policy, the Euro will bear the brunt of it, weakening further.

It has been a roller-coaster of a month for the Euro as it touched eight-year lows against the Pound as GBPEUR touched a high of 1.44.

Volatility for the near term looks set to continue – and in the Euro’s case, things are not looking very bright. Having recovered to levels of 1.40 against Sterling, the Euro has traded within a tight range although the current scenario could just be the calm before the storm

Profits boom SPANISH-owned AENA airports authority has announced that its profits have increased by a staggering 80 per cent to €276 million, thanks in part to taking over Luton Airport, a rise in passenger numbers and higher sales in retail.

Trusted independent financial adviser I HAVE been a financial adviser for close to 30 years and in that time there have been many changes affecting how I earn my living.

Possibly the largest of these has been the growing ability for private investors to research and arrange their own financial affairs using the internet. Yet despite this, demand for trusted independent financial advice has never been greater.

Firms and advisers relying on commissiondriven sales can never fully align their interests with their clients due to a natural conflict between impartially selecting appropriate financial planning solutions and how they are paid; not by the customer but by their product suppliers.

The big banks and many other firms may not agree with my view but this is because their financial advisers are in most cases heavily targeted and remunerated only based on new money they obtain from investors.

Police lose public’s respect BOYS and Girls in Blue have only themselves to blame LEAPY LEE SAYS IT

OTHERS THINK IT LET me state from the outset, that I do retain a certain amount of sympathy for officers of the law. According to some of the crime reality shows, the abuse they have to contend with can be truly horrendous.

Another thing that becomes glaringly apparent is that most of the respect the public had for the police is now pretty much nonexistent.

I am actually old enough to remember my utter shock when I saw the police referred to as ‘cops’ in an English newspaper. Prior to that it was only in American publications that they were referred to in this somewhat derogatory manner. So what’s gone wrong?

Where does the fault actually lie for this change in the public’s attitude toward modern-day law enforcement? Well, with apologies to the Boys and Girls in Blue, I think you have only yourselves to blame.

The problem with the police is that their

consider a successful prosecution a victory and an acquittal a defeat.

Over the years, this apparent attitude and determination to convict at almost any cost has slowly but surely eroded almost all the

trust and respect previously enjoyed by the ‘Blue Lamp’ Dixons of the past. Cases like the Wimbledon ‘honey trap’ in the Rachel Nickell/Colin Stagg fiasco and the Jill Dando/Barry George affair, have slowly stripped away the public’s often blind faith in British justice.

And remember... these are only the cases you hear about. What about all the innocent ‘little people’ who are serving time, merely to look good on an officer’s arrest and conviction record?

I myself became a victim of this unacceptable practice, when a four-page witness statement, which would have most definitely helped my self-defence intentions, was mysteriously whittled down to a few lines that bore no resemblance to the original, which had simply ‘disappeared!’

No, I’m afraid the police have long travelled past the point of no return, and the days of respect and trust for this previously-admired institution have gone forever.

ART is not about understanding, it is about how it makes you feel, I have always remembered that Colin Bird A weekly look Each week, Colin brings his slightly off-the-wall view of the world to the pages of EWN in his own irreverent style.

I AM an art lover. Not because I am knowledgeable or that I have an appreciation for any particular subject matter. No, it’s just that I envy those who are able to pick up a brush or palette knife and convert a blank canvas into something that is pleasing to the eye.

Many years ago, an artist acquaintance - who was then of the abstract school - asked me if I liked a particular piece he had produced. I confirmed I did, but admitted I did not understand it.

It is not about understanding, he admonished me, it is about how it makes you feel. And I have always remembered that.

My Dad was fairly artistic - drawing, painting and making useful stuff and I have wondered why I inherited none of his talent. Was I a foundling discovered by my parents on the doorstep one morning? Am I in fact the milkman’s son? Perhaps I was selected for greater things? In which case I am still waiting.

Is this why the Spanish government rushed through controversial laws designed to make anti-government protest a felony, seemingly attracting

AUGUST is officially Spain’s holiday month and sees the largest amount of holidaymakers.

The roads are full of tourists trying to find their way round the country and the stress factor for drivers goes through the roof.

Spanish traffic police launched their special summer operation on August 1, to try to control the roads and make sure motorists keep their speed down, obey the rules and generally stay safe on the road. Sadly, in the first weekend of August (August 1-2) there has already been as many as 18 deaths from traffic accidents, according to the traffic authority DGT. In one of the most horrific, three young children were killed when their car collided with a lorry and another child and an adult were injured.

In July, as many as 111 people died in car accidents in Spain, an increase of 3 per cent over last year. Driving at speed on busy roads, even within legal limits, puts people’s lives in danger and whether it is tourists or commuters racing down Spain’s highways, drivers need to be well aware of the dangers and never let their guard down, especially in the chaos of the August holidays.

Taking the utmost care keeping speeds sensible, showing patience and good manners, and being fully aware of your surroundings and the behaviour of fellow drivers is essential to coping with driving in Spain this summer.

The Nit de l’Art in s’Arracó Phoenix Media

Family Matters IT’S not possible to see everything at the Nit de l’Art in s’Arracó. Just like my most favourite of festivals, Glastonbury, you have to mentally prepare yourself for that fact beforehand. It’s not like visiting a gallery where the works of art are neatly lined up in rows for you to inspect. No. This one night only event emerges out of the bricks and mortar of our village: art is pinned onto walls and fences that you might have previously ignored, the villagers allow artists to hang work from their ‘persianas’ (shutters) and some take great pride in having art that blends beautifully with the colour of the walls of their home.

What was once an empty building becomes a gallery, nooks and crannies are discovered, trees suddenly become easels.

The day dawned last week and with it came the inevitable concerns about the weather.

I hung up my stuff up on the fence, my husband put up some lights for me, we hunted down Mateo who had the village hammer and roll of gaffer tape to stick down any electric cables, then we put my business card next to them and went off to explore.

Walking around the village, peeking into gardens and houses, we saw hundreds of cre-

ative works in a variety of different modalities: photographs, paintings and sculptures all exhibited outdoors on the streets of the town, houses, patios, facilities and interior galleries, the town square and even the church.

There was live music everywhere you turned, with jazz, blues, rock and even a late night impromptu punk performance down the back of one of the streets.

Like the old British street parties, everyone was on the street, happy faces, enjoying them-

selves, kids running around like wild things having fun, and the weather? Totally perfect.

At the end of the evening when it was time to go, we took down my photos, put them in a bag, and walked back up the hill. Overnight the street cleaners were out, washing the pavements and removing litter. When the sun rose on Friday morning it was as if it had never happened. It was leading the field with a 2.3 per cent gain over sterling from the previous Monday morning. As the weekend approaches the euro looks rather less impressive. Compared with last Friday morning’s levels it is down by a quarter of a US cent and it has lost a cent and a quarter to the current major-currency leader - the pound.

From Russia, with experience and first-hand knowledge WHILE Mike Walsh does address some topical subjects areas quite sensibly, I do find that he gets a bit carried away with his comments when it comes to Russia and Putin.

Putin is ex-KGB and probably committed quite a lot of dirty deeds during his time with this organisation.

I worked for 14 years in Russia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Kazakhstan. I have first-hand knowledge and actual experiences on which to base my opinions relating to this subject.

For a part of that time I was employed by a company owned by one Mikhail Khodorkovsky, a Switzerlandbased Russian exile, and former Russian businessman and philanthropist who spent a decade in jail on trumpedup tax charges after falling out with Vladimir Putin after he decided to stand for president.

I was also in Georgia when the Russians engineered a breach of the ceasefire that gave the Russians the opportunity to invade.

As much as two weeks before the actual invasion itself we were hearing rumours that up to 100 tanks were being assembled at the North Ossetia entrance to the tunnel that joined the two Ossetias.

After the invasion I actually saw what they did to Gori and I heard some absolutely appalling stories about what Russian troops did from our local workforce living there.

Leap too far IN response to an article written by Mr ‘Leapy’ Lee in your 16-22 July 2015 issue, women historically have been subjected to co-ordinated efforts by governments to control their fertility, including sterilisation abuse. Indeed in 1849, the US proposed sterilisation for ‘undesirables’.

Other reasons included those deemed to be mentally ‘unfit’ to have a child and for economic reasons, such as in 1965 when 30 per cent of the women in Puerto Rico were forcibly sterilised because there were ‘too many workers’.

Are dog owners in Fuengirola selfish?

Well informed?

With regard to dogs here in Fuengirola, it seems to me that some of the dog owners in this town are the most selfish and ignorant that I have come across.

There are many dogs on my urbanisation. People think “Oooh, wouldn’t it be nice to have a dog?” Then they get one, and tootle off to work each day leaving it to bark all day long for the pleasure of us poor retired folk to endure. Then they come home and take them for a walk and let them poop all over the place.

I am sick to death with the amount of excrement that covers the pavements, it’s like a minefield here. There are supposed to be fines for those who do not clean up after their dogs, but I’ve never seen or heard of anyone ever being caught and having to pay these fines, have you? Maybe you could let us know?

It’s time for Fuengirola to introduce dog wardens to implement these fines and bring these selfish owners to book once and for all.

Bite back REGARDING the letter Bitten to Death, I can sympathise with Catherine as I am also bothered by mosquito and other types of insect bites.

Firstly, my husband has installed mosquito nets on all windows and

doors. Secondly, we find our neighbours’ conifers are a haven for mosquitoes. Therefore, we purchase insecticide from the garden centres specifically to prevent the infestation and spray the trees accordingly. This does help to reduce the mosquitoes living in them.

Thirdly, some years ago whilst on holiday in Spain, we met up with a doctor friend and he was concerned at the swelling around one of my ankles, an allergic reaction to insect bites. The spots become like large boils and can cause swelling. He gave me some Claritin antihistamines to take. I found that I didn’t seem to have more bites whilst I was on that holiday.

My friend advised me that I was probably still being bitten but the tablets were preventing the reaction.

My own doctor then prescribed Claritin for me to take whilst on holiday.

When collecting my prescription, the assistant kindly informed me that I could buy Loratadine tablets cheaper.

This is the ingredient that relieves the symptoms of hayfever, pet and other

Campo noise I READ your article on page 4 entitled ‘Time to keep noise promises’ (Almeria edition). Do we in the campo not also have a ‘derecho a dormir’ (right to sleep)? Who will protest for us when the many dog sheds around here have wall-to-wall dog barking lasting all night because it’s too hot for them to bark in the daytime?

We hear that in Mojacar there also are restrictions on bars and restaurants’ noise levels, but there seem to be no restrictions outside town where people also live. Surely people everywhere are entitled to some sleep, not just in the towns.

I’M not surprised that Joseph Billet was dumbfounded by Mike Walsh’s throwaway reference to the 100 scientists supposedly killed in the MH17 disaster.

I hope Joseph means that he is dumbfounded that Mike should expect us to believe such an absurd bit of conspiracy theory, but I have a nasty feeling that he means he is overwhelmed

by Mike’s deep knowledge of the world and what makes things happen.

In fact, in Mike’s latest article, he wheels out all the nonsense he has churned out many times before.

Everyone knows that most people in Europe did not want World War II to break out. However, any intelligent reading of the history of the 1930s shows that Hitler caused the war, by continually pushing for more power and territory. He got away with it for a long time, just because Britain and other nations were reluctant to take the unpopular step of declaring war.

Does Mike think we should not have done that? And has he stopped to think what the consequences of a Nazi takeover of the continent would have meant?

He is right in one thing. History is indeed repeating itself, with Putin grabbing land and intimidating his neighbours, just as Hitler did.

The US economy does not depend on perpetual war. And what on earth is Mike trying to prove by calling the US a small country that would fit into the Sahara, while in fact it has about 300 million citizens?

Let’s have no more of this sort of rubbish!

Carrying a load AS part of a new series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

SAFELY STORED: Any load must not project from your vehicle.

MANY people ask about rules regarding carrying a load in cars. The N332 team clarify that if you are driving a vehicle that is carrying a load, you have to make sure that the load is restrained properly.

Local restraint is not just about making sure that the load does not come off, it is about making sure that the load does not shift in a way that makes the vehicle unsafe to handle or allows the load to crash into the driver’s cabin which may cause injury or death in the event of a traffic accident.

The Spanish Traffic Law requires that any load carried on or in your vehicle must not be placed in a way that makes your vehicle unsafe or unstable. It must be

secured so that it won’t move or fall from your vehicle while driving; including driving consisting of emergency braking or turning suddenly.

The law states any load must not project from your vehicle in a way that is likely to injure a person, obstruct the path of other drivers or pedestrians or damage another vehicle or anything else. It must be restrained using an appropriate load restraint method.

Anything on the back seats must be secured with seat belts but it is advisable not to carry anything in the car, you should always use the boot. In the case you need to carry a load in the vehicle, use the seat belts to secure it or use a car net.

I LIVE on an estate more than 30 years old and my property is what we call in the UK mid-terraced. On three occasions in the last few years, I have had drainage/sewage contractors come into my house and through a trap in my kitchen clear out effluent and waste which accumulates belo w m y h o u se a n d th e neighbouring properties as As you describe it, this seems to be a problem with Community drainage and sewage systems. If your neighbour is reluctant to act, you must approach the Community.

RESEARCHERS at Spain’s University of Granada, in collaboration with two Italian universities, have developed ‘super spaghetti’ which they claim has more fibre and protein than regular pasta.

The University of Granada said this enriched pasta helps reduce cardiovascular risk by being prepared with functional flours.

It has been created with the Technological Research and Development Centre of Functional Food (CIDAF) to demonstrate how new technologies can get clean functional flours using whole grain cereal, avoiding the formation of waste products in the milling process. Air classification is used to divide the flour into different fractions without altering its properties. These fractions have different chemical charac-

Dr Salinas works at the Massachusetts General Hospital and has told the media he has a rare condition called

mirror-touch synaesthesia which means he experiences the same sensations as the people he observes experiencing.

He said he first noticed it when he was a child when he felt like he was being hugged when he saw someone else having the hug.

He said during medical school whilst watching and observing an arm amputation that he had the very graphic feeling like his arm had been dismembered. Whilst it may freak some people out, he said it has made him a better doctor as he can empathise with his patients.

STORY of a woman forced into a freak show character

By Maria José Fernandez CABARET, circus art, humour and burlesque have been put together to create The Hole, a hilarious spectacle hosted by comedian and singer Pepa Charro known popularly as ‘The Earthquake of Alcorcon.’

The Hole narrates the story of a woman once forced into a freak show character, who falls in love with Cristobal, a rat.

The show counts on 16 artists who will interact with the audience, by means of an open text which welcomes all sorts of improvisation as the script has evolved since the show debuted four years ago.

But it’s not just the newlyweds who run up costs. Someone I know of went to five weddings last year, a couple of which also involved stag ‘dos.’ The total cost (presents, accommodation, food, drinks etc) he reckoned amounted to several thousand pounds (one wedding alone left him with a bill for almost £1,000).

WHEN your garden is subjected to extreme heat for an ongoing period, many plants will suffer, often quite dramatically.

Naturally some plants, especially succulents, are pretty much drought-proof but if you enjoy a range of flowering plants and growing your own vegetables, then you will have to give them some help.

It can be extremely frustrating to have spent a great deal of time, effort and money on producing your oasis or market garden to then see all that you have planted literally shrivel up and die.

INCREASE WATERING: As well as feeding your plants with nutrients.

The first signs of stress will be in the wilting of the foliage which indicates lack of water

and excess of direct sunlight.

The obvious answer to this is to increase watering and for

years many expert gardeners including the Royal Horticultural Society have advised against watering when the sun is at its strongest as they believed it caused leaf burn. As with so many long-standing theories, this has now been tested and disproved by a team of physicists from a Hungarian University who could find no evidence that this was true.

So, apart from increasing watering, you should consider feeding with nutrients, spreading mulch around the base and for many vegetables in particular, a simple shade will help.

Number of mortgages granted is on the up THE number of mortgages taken out in Spain in May increased for the 12th month running, the National Statistics Institute (INE) has reported.

The number of mortgages registered for homes in the country was 19,732, 10.9 per cent more than in May 2014.

The average amount registered was €103,992 with the overall amount loaned reaching more than €2 billion.

The regions where the most mortgages were registered were Andalucia with 3,717, Madrid with 3,378 and Cataluña with 3,085, although amount-wise Madrid led with €496.3 million. followed by Cataluña with €371.4 million and Andalucia with €323.4 million.

Of the total, 92.8 per cent of new mortgages in May used variable interest with the Euribor the most common indicator.

Years of saving up A STUDY by fotocasa and Infojobs online employment site has revealed that Spanish workers would need to use their entire income for an average of 5.5 years to buy a new home.

The results were obtained by taking average salaries in Spain (€1,969 per month gross) and the average price of property, which for June was reported to be €1,635 per square metre.

By region, the Basque Country is the area where workers would take longest to pay at 9.7 years, followed by the Balearic Islands at 7.2 years, and Madrid at 7.1 years.

Puppy trafficking trade is putting lives at risk AN undercover investigation into the puppy smuggling trade has discovered that underage and unvaccinated puppies are being transported illegally from certain Eastern European countries.

Many of the puppies are sold online to customers in other European countries, including the UK. Some dealers and breeders are selling the animals to members of the public, who often have no

idea of their condition.

The charity Dogs Trust Today revealed this illegal trade back in November 2014, not long after EU pet travel rules were relaxed. As a result, the EU regulation on pet travel

By Carol Irving THE eighth Volkswagen Passat model sees a new gadget being introduced in the shape of an information display right in front of the driver’s field of vision, the first Volkswagen model to have this innovation.

The display, pops up above the dashboard on the windshield, enabling the driver to keep looking ahead without taking their eyes off the road. Information such as speed, traffic signs as well as data about the various assistance systems are shown on a 10 x 15cm transparent surface which has a resolution of 480 x 240 pixels.

Other information, such as alerts or navigation data, appear on the screen as though it is actually two metres in front of the vehicle, making it easier for the driver to continue focusing on the road ahead, rather than glancing at the dashboard and then having to refo-

cus, meaning there is less time to react at any potential traffic hazard.

To operate the display, drivers simply need to choose which types of information they want displayed via the infotainment system and activate it via a control next to the rotary light switch.

AFTER the latest development in motoring technology announced plans for a 300 mph car, it looks like it is already being overtaken. Scientists are working on developing a vehicle that can reach speeds of up to 1,000mph (1,610 kmph) and so break the world land speed record.

The car, which is being developed by a British team, will have an engine created from a rocket attached to a Eurofighter-Typhoon jet engine. Named Bloodhound SSC, it will make its first appearance in 2016 at Hakskeen Pan in Northern Cape, South Africa.

The lure of the open sea may be tempting, but enjoying the freedom of sailing necessitates taking a common sense approach. Safety has to be first, in other words, and there are a number of steps to follow before even arriving at the dock.

First of all, check weather conditions before setting sail to make sure you are not heading into a storm. If you do start to notice dark, overcast skies, blustery winds or a drop in temperature while in the water, return to shore as soon as you can, just in case.

Also, have a pre-departure checklist which includes safety gear, life jackets (and make sure you wear them), distress signals,

It may seem obvious but make sure all on-board know how to swim! If not, now is definitely the time to have lessons.

REGATTA: Has one of the youngest crew members.

Champion eyes up King’s Cup ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD Laura Martinez, Spanish champion in the Under 13 Optimist class is one of the youngest crew members representing Palma’s Royal Nautical Club.

Having already spent a third of her life practising the art of sailing, she is the youngest on board the J80 Opera Season and in the 34th MAPFRE King’s Cup regatta. However, her crew members also include

youthful sailing champions, such as Albert Torres, Marc Llado and Antoni Massanet.

The youth’s trainer and coach is Hugo Ramon, one of the top sailors in Palma, who at the age of 20, in 2005, was the youngest sailor to cross the Atlantic single-handedly.

The young sailor has ambitions to one day become overall champion in the European Championships.

Summer sailing school AROUND 500 sailing students in Mallorca are expected to attend this summer’s Royal Nautical Club of Palma’s School of the Sea. The summer camp is open to any youngster interested in learning the basics of sailing and marine culture, whether or not their family are members of the club.

Courses will be held at different times during the week with children able to have lunch in the club’s facilities. As well as canoeing and sailing, there will be workshops on the environment, crafts, swimming and paddle surfing.

By Tony Myles THERE were two significant golf tournaments over the past weekend and they reminded me of those Spot the Difference newspaper competitions. Except that with these two events the differences were identified with ease.

Having watched the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Turnbury and the Tiger sponsored Quicken Loans, it is evident that there are very clear disparities between the male and female professional games.

New golf super power One of the first things you notice is the increasing dominance of Asian players in the ladies’ upper strata. Out of the top 20 finishers, 10 were Asian players. This is reflected in the world rankings

where again, nine of the top 20 are Asian players.

A few have relocated to other countries but the names at the top are a very strong indicator of the emergence of spectacular golfing talent from China, Japan and especially from Korea. The winner, who demonstrated the most resilient golf, was world number one, Inbee Park. A solid performer from Korea who already had a hoard of major golf titles to her name.

However - whilst the vast majority of golfers would have little difficulty in identifying Jordan Spieth I would bet that Inbee could turn up at your next Texas Scramble and nobody would recognise her. I would even go further by suggesting that if she was identified as the world number one very few would be able to name her.

This conjecture is supported by the size of the winner’s purse. In Gainesville, Virginia, The Quicken Loans winner, Troy Merritt, held off Rickie Fowler to top the leaderboard and collect

$1.2 million whilst in Turnbury - recently renamed Trump Turnbury - Inbee Park came from five shots back to overtake her own protégée Jin-Young Ko and collect a mere £298,000.

Of course it is a large sum and a good return on four days’ effort but it does bear comparison when the standard of golf was equally high in both events and it is merely the level of exposure that is determining the value.

So what is the point?

In summary, I spotted: 1. Strong challenge being mounted by Asian countries in the ladies’ game.

2. Limited coverage of the ladies’ events.

3. Much lower prize value for the ladies.
