‘NO VACANCIES’ signs go up as occupation rates soar By Eleanor Hawkins August is here and the Costa Tropical is thriving as hotels report full bookings for the first half of the month. Following a record July, the best in five years, with establishments forced to put up ‘no vacancies’ signs at weekends, bookings combined with visitors already on site indicate the situation will last until at least the middle of August.

“Occupation rates for hotels are excellent, especially up until the 15th,” said Rafael Lamelas, President of the Granada coast hoteliers’ association. He added: “Everywhere is almost fully booked, mainly down to the fact that a lot of people have their holidays this month, and Motril and Almuñecar have fairs which attract visitors.” Frantic activity could be seen at ho-

tels in all the main areas at the weekend, and the beaches were filled with holiday-makers, a welcome sight indeed after the slump years. To accommodate the extra visitors, a daily bus service has been laid on between Malaga Airport and Almuñecar, with stops in Maro, Nerja, Torrox Costa and Torre del Mar. The bus leaves Almuñecar at 8.30am and the airport at 11.45am.
