Bullfighting ban spreads THERE are now 19 towns in Mallorca which have outlawed the practice

By Staff Reporter SON SERVERA has become the 19th town in Mallorca to get rid of bullfighting.

The motion was approved unanimously following a campaign by Mallorca Sense Sang (Without Blood) which has resulted in 19 towns banning

bullfighting in less than a year.

The association has collected 130,000 signatures to get Palma to ban bullfighting soon too, and is holding a protest march from Palma City Hall to the bullring this Saturday from 11.15am The hope is that bullfighting will be banned throughout the Balearics.

Rental prices PROPERTY rental in the Balearic Islands has risen by 3.6 per cent during the second trimester of this year to €8.4 per square metre according to website Idealista.com.

The biggest difference was in Palma, rising 4.4 per cent to €9.1 per m2. In Calvia it rose less (2.1 per cent), but makes it the most expensive at €10 per m2.

Health care for illegal immigrants ENTITLEMENT was lost under the Partido Popular rule

Case now closed A CASE against Arta Mayor Tolo Gili for alleged corruption and falsiification of a public document has been shelved. The case was lodged by two Local Police officers when their weapons licence was taken from them. The mayor says he will now decide whether to take them to court as he has been personally affected by the case.

Pool tax wanted THE Palma Residents’ Association has suggested that the City Hall introduce a tax for private pools. They believe it would be fair for people who have swimming pools which

they fill with water from the general supply to pay more because they are using more than for normal domestic use.

They also suggest a census of existing pools.

ILLEGAL immigrants in the Balearic Islands are once again entitled to free medical care.

The councillor for Health, Patricia Gomez, explained some 15,000 illegal immigrants on the islands will once again be entitled to medical care and medicine from the pharmacy the same as Spanish citizens and legal residents.

This entitlement was lost under the conservative Partido Popular rule of the regional government who enforced the decree introduced by the central government in 2012.

Foreigners over the age of 18 from countries not covered by the Spanish system, will be entitled to the card.

By Carol Irving AUGUST in Asturias sees the international canoeing race known as Descenso del Sella (Descent of the Sella).

More than 1,000 participants from all over the world compete over a 20kilometre stretch of the River Sella from the town of Arriondas, in the foothills of the Picos del Europa, through some spectacular Asturian scenery, to the finishing line at the coastal resort of Ribadesella.

Man who tried to poison children A MAN is facing 14 years in prison for allegedly attempting to poison his two children.

The events took place in their home in Palma in February last year when his wife was sleeping.

He got the two children, aged 21 and six, in his own bed and filled a bowl with hydrochloric acid and bleach which released a gas that could have killed them in a short space of time, especially as he had closed the

doors and windows. He then allegedly got into bed with them.

However, at around 5am, his daughter, who has a schizophrenic disorder and is certified 46 per cent disabled, awoke and finding herself unable to breath,

feeling sick and coughing constantly, took her brother and left the room. Both were admitted to the emergency department at Son Espases Hospital with intoxication from the gas. Both received treatment for three

days but had no lasting side effects.

The man had reportedly been drinking that evening but the prosecutor insists he knew what he was doing. He may have to pay €3,600 in compensation.

THREE bullfighters, Jose Antonio ‘Morante de la Puebla,’ Jose Maria Manzanares and Alejandro Talavante will appear in Palma bullring on August 6 to show their support for bullfighting in the city where the council intends to have it banned.

Armengol to meet Felipe VI PRESIDENT at the Palace

By Community Reporter KING Felipe VI is due to meet with the President of the Balearic Government, Francina Armengol, at the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid tomorrow at 12.30pm.

This is just one of several audiences with the King at Zarzuela Palace which are being held for the regional presidents. Others include Ximo Puig, from Valencia; Guillermo Fernandez from Extremadura; Emiliano Garcia-Page from Castilla-La Mancha and Artur Mas from CataluĂąa.

Since October last year Felipe VI has been meeting with the regional presidents but the meetings were suspended until after the regional elections in May.

Authorities on alert over new deadly drug SON ESPASES Hospital has confirmed that a patient tested positive for an extremely dangerous drug known as Flakka.

The British man remained under observation for 72 hours but has now gone back home.

Several other people tested negative for the drug.

G u a rd ia Civ il a re in ve s tiga ting where the drug, which can kill within hours, could have come from, as this is the first confirmed case in Spain.

The young Briton may also be the first person to survive the drug for which there is no antidote. He was ad-

mitted to the hospital in a very aggressive state and with heart problem having consumed several tablets in Magaluf. It works very quickly and reaches the brain within minutes. The line between its positive effects and a severe intoxication is hard to calculate.

Symptoms include hallucinations, euphoria, aggressive behaviour, hyperthermia, hypertension, heart arrhythmia, extreme strength and high activity levels.

The drug comes from China and has an appearance similar to bath salts. It can be inhaled, smoked or injected and can also cause a heart attack.

Briton in balcony fall A BRITISH tourist, named as Harry Carter, 18, remains in a critical condition after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Magaluf.

The fall occurred after midnight when he was attempting to get down from a balcony on the fourth floor of the Club B Hotel with a bottle of alcohol in his hand. He fell onto the street below and remained unconscious and bleeding profusely from the head.

Paramedics arrived quickly and took him to Son Espases Hospital, where he was reported to have a broken arm and severe head trauma.

Guardia Civil are investigating the events.

Electrician dies in fall AN electrician, 43, died in Arta after falling from a height of 12 metres while working in a building opposite his company.

It appears that he slipped and fell into an inner patio, dying instantly.

The Local Police were first on the scene, and when paramedics arrived they attempted CPR but were unsuccessful.

Within minutes, the victim's wife and son arrived, as well as other relatives and local residents.

Work inspectors also visited the scene and Guardia Civil will be investigating to confirm that it was an accident.

Electricity use peaks ON Monday, the Balearic Islands registered the highest use of electricity so far this year.

According to electrical company Endesa, at 2pm, a maximum of 1,158.5MW was used, higher than the maximum for 2014 which was 1,150.77 on August 11.

This was due to the high temperatures, which elevated the use of electricity in the Mallorca-Menorca system more than others. Normally the peaks are seen during the second fortnight in August.

Summer sales are looking up SALES had met expectations

SHOP SALES: Many had sold more this year compared to last year.

By Staff Reporter FORTY-EIGHT per cent of shop owners in Mallorca say they have sold more in the first two weeks of this year's summer sales than over the same period last year.

Five per cent claims to have sold the same, according to the Union for Small and Medium

Businesses (PIMECO). Twenty per cent say they expected the sales to go better, while 40 per cent thought they would be worse.

Sixty per cent said that the sales had met their expectations while 40 per cent said they had not. Almost 50 per cent blamed this on the lack of customers and 51 per cent blamed it on the lack of desire to buy.

Street artists to improve city PALMA City Hall has announced that it will meet this month with popular street artists to refurbish the city streets.

An emergency landing A PRIVATE jet carrying five people had to carry out an emergency landing at Son Sant Joan Airport.

The jet, registered in Germany was coming from Essen to Palma, and alerted the control tower of a problem with the undercarriage, and the emergency protocol was activated.

Fifteen firemen were on the runway when the plane landed on its nose and slid around two kilometres before stopping.

No serious damage was caused, no-one was injured and the firemen were not needed.

One passenger was taken to hospital by ambulance due to a pre-existing condition for which he was being accompanied by a medical team from Germany.

The southern runway was closed for an hour while the plane was removed and remains from the acciddent were cleaned away. Activity at the airport was not affected.

They include Marc Peris ‘Soma’ and Joan Aguilo, and priority will be given to the most degraded areas of the city if agreement is reached.

Projects could include murals similar to those which have been created in other European cities and proved very popular.

Four saved FOUR people were rescued after the sailing ship on which they were travelling hit a rock in es Port des Canonge, damaging the hull and causing it to take on water. A ship which was nearby helped them before the ship sunk completely.

Trust abuse A WOMAN who was treasurer for the Social Security department in Mallorca is facing four years in prison for consulting databases in order to benefit her husband’s company. He is currently serving time in prison for corruption.

Police tutor FROM the beginning of the new school year, Local Police in Palma will have tutor figures to help resolve problems in schools.

Pensioner crashes her car into a bar 87-YEAR-OLD said to have lost control and mounted pavement

By Staff Reporter A WOMAN, 87, crashed her car into the wall of a bar in Calle San Magi in Palma.

According to reports, the car was parked and when the woman went to drive away, she accelerated so hard that she lost control of it. People outside on the terrace heard a commotion and saw the vehicle heading for them at speed. They jumped out of the way as the vehicle travelled 15 metres before mounting the pavement, hitting all the tables and chairs in its way before it crashed into the wall.

The woman, who has Parkinson’s Disease, was attended to at the scene by paramedics but was not taken to hospital.

SMASHED UP: The woman’s car had to be towed away.

Petition to allow pets on trains MALLORCA resident, Aina Rodriguez Neira, is collecting signatures via the change.org website for a petition to request that pets be allowed to travel by train.

More than 1,500 people have signed the petition al-

ready, and Aina plans to send it to the Mallorca Train Services.

Her hope is that it will result in the island being the same as other places where pets are already allowed on trains.

The petition suggests a special area to be set aside for them and a set of rules, as well as fines for those who fail to comply.

Meanwhile in Palma, the president of the Can Capas and Son Gotleu clubs for the

elderly has demanded better facilities at Orson Welles Park.

Josefina Perete has asked City Hall to install a drinking fountain for children and an area which can be used by dogs as a toilet.

Shopping centre ban THE Balearic Government will propose changes to the Commerce Law to prevent new shopping centres from opening.

Councillor for Work, Commerce and Industry, Iago Negueruela, announced the decision to unions, consumer associations and the islands’ councils at a meeting to study the response to the appeal that the central government has presented against the Commerce Law regarding whether or not it is constitutional.

Tourists held on rape charges TWO Danish tourists have been arrested by the Guardia Civil on suspicion of allegedly drugging and raping a dancer, 25, at a hotel in Palmanova.

The alleged victim told the Guardia Civil that she didn’t remember anything when she awoke naked in a bed with the two men on top of her.

She left the room and went home and claims to have felt hungover despite the fact that she had not drunk any alcohol the previous night. She suspects a date rape drug was used.

The two men, aged 26 and 21, claim they had sex with the dancer but that it was consensual. They spent the night in police custody and were later taken before a judge.

In a separate case, a man, 34, on trial in Palma Provincial Court is facing 12 years in prison for the alleged rape of a woman in August last year in Magaluf.

He allegedly offered to accompany the woman, who was drunk, back to her apartment, but on the way, he took her to some rocks on the beach near Punta Ballena. There, the victim claims, he covered her mouth, pushed her to the floor and forced her to perform sexual acts, threatening to hurt her if she didn’t comply. He may also have to pay the victim €12,000 in compensation.

Bogus dentist due in Palma court this week DENTIST had carried out several procedures

By Staff Reporter A MAN has been charged by a court in Palma for practising dentistry in Palma for 25 years without a licence and was due in court this week.

He was recently reported by a patient who had been going to him for years thinking he was a qualified professional.

The woman said the bogus dentist, who practises at a clinic in Palma had carried out several procedures for her over the past two decades. She said she had always had problems following treatment which often required emergency procedures, and that for the past two years, she had been in great pain. In May, she had got an infection which forced her to go to the hospital emergency department.

FALSE DENTIST: Practising without a licence.

She claims to have suffered from anxiety and depression due to the pain in her mouth and learned when she went to another clinic that he had been charged in the past for practising without qualifications.

Once she had been treated, she returned to the clinic to complain and recorded a conversation in which the man admitted he was not a dentist, that some procedures had gone seriously wrong, and he had falsified documents and his reports.

She also said in the following days she was called several times by the clinic and asked to attend a meeting in which they asked her not to report the situation and offered her compensattion. However, the woman decided to go ahead with the complaint

Pedestrian is seriously injured A MAN, 25, is in a serious condition after being involved in a collision with a vehicle in Calle Marques de la Senia in Palma.

According to witnesses, the man, who may have been drunk, crossed the road when a vehicle was approaching.

The driver swerved to avoid him but the man had apparently dropped something and went back to pick it up, meaning that he walked straight into the path of the oncoming car. He was attended to on the scene and then taken by ambulance to Son Espases Hospital.

The Local Police confirmed that the driver had not been drinking. However, other witnesses say the car was travelling too fast and the driver failed to brake in time to avoid the pedestrian.

Civil servants failed to report on irregularities TWO civil servants in Mallorca Council admitted while testifying in the Cloaca case that they realised a contract had been rigged, but failed to report it.

They realised because two offers for the contract to sell chairs were from the same company, came in the same envelopes and had similar logos.

However, they failed to report it to the councillor at the time, Catalina Julve, who is charged in the case and claims she knew nothing about it.

The two civil servants said that they didn’t think it was their job to report their suspicions and pointed the finger at the secretary at the time, Coloma Castañer, who approved the contract.

The second contract was given to Simon Galmes, who was later hired to manage the rubbish collection points with a salary of €9,000 per month. The Public Prosecution maintains he never did the job or handed in reports as noone controlled what he did.

A voice who is there for others Our Euro Women series is featuring women who have made a success of their lives in Spain. These outstanding ladies have been shattering glass ceilings whether in business, charity work or sports.

Anette Skou works hard to make the integration between residents and foreigners easier for all.

ANETTE SKOU was one of the founders of the foreigner’s office when it was created 30 years ago by a small group who realised that expatriates were visiting Spain, and others were choosing to live here, that had very little knowledge of the Spanish way of life.

When speaking to the EWN, Anette said “I arrived in Spain at the age of 16 with my parents. I decided to come along with them as I was too young to study for an artistic career back in Denmark at the Royal Academy of Art. I was fortunate to have languages as an asset anyway, and in later years I was able to put them to good use.”

After working hard in Andalucía and gaining more experience over the years, Anette saw an advert in the local press for the position of translator. She was up against 60 other candidates and had to endure tough exams to be considered.

Determined as she was, Anette rose above the rest and was hired immediately and since that day, helping others has been the passion and enthusiasm in her life. She told the EWN “It was only a small office back then, a far cry from what it is now, and it was set up to help others who needed assistance with documents and translating them when dealing with the authorities.

“The queues grew larger as the demand for this kind of help became blatantly obvious and there were many other issues regarding tax and the law.” Anette had to study the law and research many avenues before being able to help the many that continually knocked at her door.

The foreign office and me personally have great respect for the foreign media.

Now, after celebrating a 30-year anniversary of the Foriegn Office Mijas, Anette stands proud that she is a woman who has made the foreign office what it is today, a safety net and comfort to others in need. When asked what had contributed to her success, Anette said “I am still very much in love with my husband, Jose Maria, and also my son. I have good people around me which fuels my energy and enthusiasm.”

Anette is a key member of the Soroptimist Internatinal Organisation which is a body of women who work hard to transform the sad and gruelling lives of others.

This women’s movement prides over 80,000 members who are women working throughout 130 countries to bring stan-

Anette is also a key figure in a project in Free Town South Africa which has succeeded in obtaining clean water and many other necessities needed there. The Soroptimist are honoured by receiving an invitation to attend the United Nations in order to raise awareness and recognition of the organisation’s outstanding work.

Some decades ago when Anette arrived here as a young girl, she recalls how it was very hard in the Franco years, and little girls should be seen but definitely not heard. We are so thankful that Anette was a voice that was heard and she has been a voice for many others.

On leaving the interview with her, this wonderful and inspirational lady added “The foreign office and me personally have great respect for the foreign media, and we would like to thank them for the continued support we have had over the years. It has gone hand in hand with what we are working towards every day, which is to make the integration between residents and foreigners easier for all.”

Blue flags THE beach of Sa Coma, the two in Cala Millor and es Ribell in Costa de los Pinos have been awarded blue flags for the quality of the beach and sea water, as well as accessibility, awarded by an international jury.

Hotel theft TWO men were arrested

by Guardia Civil for their alleged involvement in at least 20 robberies in hotels in Calvia and a house in Llucmajor, as well as setting up a drug sales point in Es Pil-lari in Palma. Several stolen items were recovered.

Tree fire THREE vehicles and several fruit trees caught fire in Soller on the road to Fornalutx after an electrical cable fell and caused sparks which set fire to a tree underneath. One of the cars was completely wrecked by the fire.

On trial for ‘murder’ A MAN is facing 20 years in prison for stabbing his former partner to death in Felanitx in July last year.

He used a ruse to get the victim on her own and her son found her body several minutes later. When police and Guardia Civil arrived on the scene, the accused was still there and he was arrested. While being questioned several hours later he admitted he had stabbed the woman. He has been in prison ever since.

The Public Prosecutor is asking for €150,000 in compensation for each of the victim’s daughters.

Man arrested for sharing videos of prostitutes

By Staff Reporter PALMA Local Police have complained that there are not enough officers to watch the security cameras on Palma Beach at night.

According to a local Spanish daily, the cameras haven’t worked at night for more than a year because there is no-one to watch them, despite the fact they had proved very effective. They were installed in 2008 and cost around €50,000 with the aim of making the Balearic Islands’ busiest tourist area safer.

A MAN, 30, was arrested by National Police in Palma for allegedly recording sexual encounters with prostitutes without their consent.

One of the women noticed he kept on looking at a certain spot in the bedroom and noticed a light coming from inside a backpack there.

When he was out of the room she found he had been recording their encounter with glasses and a tablet PC. A second woman came forward, and with the details they provided, he was identified and arrested. He was sharing the recordings with his friends.

The main accused, Alexander Romanov, who remains in prison on remand, is charged with money laundering, organising and belonging to a criminal group, crimes against workers’ rights, document falsification and revealing secrets, according to the Balearic High Court of Justice. He is facing 17 years in prison. He was arrested in his luxury mansion in Calvia, where more than €250,000 worth of jewellery was found.

The operation which resulted in their arrests was coordinated by the Guardia Civil and Europol.

Controversy over chillout bar THE Port Authorities in Palma claim that the chillout bar with pool at the Sant Carles fortress is legal, but the city hall denies it.

The port authorities plan to appeal the council’s decision to fine the establishment which reportedly opened without a licence and claims that it is within the port’s public domain.

A local association has also asked the city hall to take action to protect the building, which was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.

Large visitors to the port THE Hyane, a 57-metrelong patrol ship which belongs to the German Navy, visited Palma recently.

It was carrying 36 crew members and can travel at 40 knots.

Later the same day, the 152-metre-long Golden Bear Training Ship from California University entered the port carrying trainee sailors from Boston who have visited Barcelona and Naples and will now travel to the Caribbean.

Trial for falsifying foreclosure notes ACCUSED of failing to deliver initial notifications

By Community Reporter THE Public Prosecution is asking for four years in prison for document falsification for a man accused of issuing thousands of false foreclosure notes.

He ran a courier service which distributed 60,000 notifications every year from the Tax Office, town halls and others.

The victims received foreclosure notices from the Tax Office without previously receiv-

ing the two notifications required by law.

He is also charged with crimes against workers’ rights as he had a team working without contracts who he allegedly forced to falsify the notifications to look as if they had been delivered. One man testified that there were around 10 illegal workers who were desperate for the €700 to €900 per month they earned working Monday to Friday from 7am to 9pm.

They had no holidays and if they fell ill, a day’s salary was docked.

Hammer attack A POLISH man is facing 10 years in prison for attempting to kill his former partner with a hammer in Illetes, Calvia, in May last year.

He allegedly waited in the stairwell outside her apartment for her to arrive and when she opened the door, he jumped on her and pushed her inside, where they began arguing.

At one point, he allegedly hit her from behind with a hammer, knocking her to the floor where he continued to beat her. She got up and sat on a sofa and he allegedly went to the kitchen for a knife.

When she saw him coming, the woman went out onto the balcony to call for help and jumped down to the balcony below to escape the attack. He fled the scene and was arrested several days later.

Colombian fraudster detained A MAN was arrested for fraud in Bogota, Colombia, following a police investigation in Palma.

The Colombian fraudster, who operated worldwide, had assumed the identity of another person and used false details to tranfer up to â‚Ź48,436 from an account with the Bank of America, based in Miami, to his own.

A c o m p l a i n t m a d e in Ca ra c a s , Venezuela, reached police in the Balearic Islands who were able to determine the identity of the account holder, who was living between Miami and Bogota.

by Interpol, and experts from the Bank of America in Spain, resulted in his arrest before he was able to travel to Miami, based on a warrant issued by Mallorca judge Jose Castro. The judge has also requested his extradition to Spain and he is expected to arrive next month for trial.

By Staff Reporter GUARDIA CIVIL from the Balearic Islands took part in training to learn how to inspect large ships which arrive at the islands’ ports.

Fifteen officers who work in port security took part in the course which was held for the first time. Palma Port was chosen due to the high number of cruise ships it receives and in general the course was considered to be a positive experience by Guardia Civil, shipping companies and the port authorities.

The practical part of the course took place on a Balearia ship and members of the Merchant Navy also took part.

POLICE believe was used by illegal immigrants

By Staff Reporter GUARDIA CIVIL launched a manhunt after finding a boa t in the s e a ne a r C a la Figuera, believed to have been used by 13 illegal Algerian immigrants who were later arrested.

A search was launched by land and air around the Santanyi area after the small boat, with no engine, was found by residents in the area and towed to land by Guardia Civil.

Inside, milk and water in packages with Arabic writing were found and the boat is believed to have left from Dellys, the nearest point of the A lge ria n c oa s t, 275 kilometres away.

The crossing is estimated at 12 hours in calm seas.

Final man arrested in drugs operation THE youngest member of ‘El Pablo’ clan was arrested by National Police in Palma and has been remanded in prison.

Over the past few weeks, Ivan, 24, had managed to evade the police after avoiding a raid last month with another member, by cutting his hair, growing a beard and changing his way of dressing.

He refused to give a statement and was charged with belonging to a criminal organisation, drug traffiicking, money laundering and illegally using the electrical supply.

He will also face charges for prostitution and corruption of minors as he had regular contact with a 16-year-old girl who he allegedly forced to have sex with him and his friends.

Last month’s raid led to 24 arrests, including El Pablo and members of his family.

Holiday booking fraud THIRTEEN people have been arrested and nine charged, including several in the Balearic Islands, by Guardia Civil for fraud.

were travel agents and booking sites online.

The investigation began following a complaint from one which had suffered losses after hotels, holidays and flights

were booked with stolen or cloned credit cards.

Hundreds of unsuccessful attempts were made by the criminal organisation to use the stolen credit card details.

Tragic weekend on island’s roads MANY of the casualties were taken to hospital

By Staff Reporter SEVERAL accidents occurred on the roads of Mallorca this weekend.

A cyclist, 75, from Campos, died following a collision on the road to Felanitx. When paramedics arrived they were only able to certify his death.

Guardia Civil are investigating.

On the Inca - Llubi road, a man 35, died, when the vehicle

in which he was travelling left the road and crashed into a tree after rolling down a two-metre embankment. He was trapped and had to be extracted by firemen. He died later in hospital.

His passenger, 46, was slightly injured.

On the Camino de Can Pastilla, a man, 58, was injured when his scooter crashed into a 4x4 vehicle which was in front of him and stopped to turn left.

Local Police encountered the

accident and gave First Aid until the man was taken to hospital. On the old Sineu to Pina road, three people were injured when the vehicle in which they were travelling overturned. The woman driver lost control on a bend, she tested positive for alcohol. The road was closed for several minutes and the casualties were taken to hospital.

The vehicle, with five occupants, overturned near the football pitch.

Sidestepping laws to allow pub crawling MOBILE phone apps are being used to avoid the laws

In May, Calvia Town Hall approved changes to laws which could restrict the activity as it can't be banned. The number of participants has been reduced to 20 maximum, companies can only carry out one pub crawling expedition per day, a guide and a security guard must be present, companies must have civil liability insurance and the expeditions must take place between 8pm and midnight.

However, mobile phone Apps are being used to avoid the laws, promoting offers at certain bars and advising on what time to attend. This way, an individual service is offered and users make their own decision on which bars to visit.

PALMA City Hall and Mallorca Football Club have agreed to reform the Son Moix stadium in three phases.

The President of the Club, Utz Claassen; the deputy mayor for City Models, Urban Development and Decent Housing, Antoni Noguera, and the deputy mayor for Sports, Susanna Moll, explained that changes would include extra seating which would be placed behind the goals.

The pitch will be turned 90 degrees in 2016, which coincides with the club’s 100th anniversary.

The club will also hand over land at the Lluis Sitjar in exchange for the terrain needed to carry out this project.

By Staff Reporter THE British Consulate in Madrid has warned Britons choosing the expat life to make sure they inform the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) of their plans if they are in receipt of any benefits. Failure to do so could result in a criminal offence.

“Reporting a change in your circumstances is your responsibility,” said a spokesperson for the Consulate. “By failing to do so you could be committing fraud, even if you do not live in

Spain but have property here.”

The Consulate points to the case of Cardiff man Dean Stuart Ahmed, who, while claiming benefits in the UK as a single man with disabilities, spent 15 years building up a portfolio of luxury properties in Murcia and South Wales, which he then rented out, bringing in sizeable sums of cash. He was caught, and was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison, and his properties and assets seized.

Woman who died in Lanjaron bungee accident is named A BRITISH woman who died on Tuesday (July 21) in a bungee jumping accident in Lanjaron, Granada, has been named as 23-year-old Kleyo De Abreu, 23, from London.

The accident happened at about 2.45pm on a bridge near the A-44 road when the victim crashed into a wall and was left dangling from her ropes.

Although the fire brigade and Guardia Civil were called to the scene by a passerby nothing could be done to save the young woman’s life.

Investigations are underway to determine exactly what happened, and initial police reports said that the woman from London had employed the services of a local adventure sports company and the accident was witnessed by her aunt, with whom she was staying.

The Foreign Office has said it is ready to offer consular support.

It is not too often that we receive good news about income tax, but the Spanish government has announced income tax cuts twice in one year now. This is a welcome development for taxpayers, and an encouraging sign of how the local economy is improving.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced the reduction in personal income tax on 2nd July.

The new tax rules were then approved and published in the Spanish Official Gazette on 11th July 2015. The tax cuts extend to both scale and savings income tax rates and are backdated to 1st January 2015.

Income Tax Reduced

2015 income tax rates for Spanish tax residents Income tax rates in Spain are comprised of state rates and regional rates set by each Autonomous Community.

Only the state portion has been reduced with the new law.

The Autonomous Communities are under no obligation to change their own rates, so it is likely that those established in 1st January 2015 will remain in place at the regional stage.

The regional rates are then added on top. So, in general, the total tax rates will range from 19.5% to 46%. They can vary by region, so that for Islas Baleares residents they go from 19% to 44%. For fiscal year 2016, the combined rates will range, in general, from 19% to 45%. Again, local variations are likely.

The tax rate applied on savings income is cut from 20% to 19.5%.

The government calculates that these measures will constitute an additional saving for taxpayers amounting to €1,500 million.

It is in a position to bring the tax cuts forward because of the improving

TWO friends took to the skies for a recent sky-dive to help raise money for the Pink Ladies and the AECC and Breakthrough Breast Cancer UK. Diane Blacknall wanted to sky-dive to raise money for breast cancer awareness and support as her sister June was diagnosed with the disease in December last year. She has since undergone a partial mastectomy, numerous rounds of chemotherapy and will shortly be starting radiotherapy.

More than €1,000 was raised, with the money going to the Pink Ladies to continue their hard work here in Spain and to Breakthrough Breast Cancer UK. Diane was joined in her brave endeavour by Mike Haynes from Coys Rent a Car. Mike has completed a sky-dive before so went along to give her moral support.

IN the past a pension was something to live off in old age, but nowadays those who retire are often a lot more spritely than their ancestors and the idea of sitting in a rocking chair on the porch watching the world go by doesn’t appear too attractive! According to a survey from the UK, entrepreneurial older workers don’t see their future sipping soup, but starting off on a new life adventure.

Some experts say people who set up businesses later in life have a much greater chance of success as they have the benefit of experience and maybe some financial resources. But be warned that it is no easy feat!

With the excitement of the new idea it might be enticing to drop a big portion of your pension / saved money into your new business venture. If the business goes to plan and does well then it’s money well spent. But remember that you’re taking a risk with money originally intended to provide you with a secure income later in life.

Britain’s apprenticeship scheme produced far more talent than did England’s public schools.

The practice of taking on an apprentice fell into some disuse but was revitalised in the early 1990s. Of course, it wasn’t necessary to benefit from an apprenticeship to learn one’s trade.

There were many callings outside the apprenticeship scheme that had their own methods of training. One such was my own. When I left school, most of the world’s trade was carried in British registered ships. I seem to recall there being about 350,000 Merchant Seamen plus me.

were constant courses in proficiency.

This followed a six year learning curve until, after six years; a young seaman received the status and pay of an Able Bodied Seaman (AB).

Whilst groundwork training is essential, real education came from hands-on experience. This included our being mentored by older and wiser seamen who took over where formal training left off. By educating young employees we invest in the future of our business and the wellbeing of our communities’ future prosperity.

It is equally essential for young people to value training.

Realising that training is the best investment one can make in one’s future I was prepared to offer my services free to trades such as printing and the building trades.

Not quite as unacceptable as it might appear. Have you seen what a university education costs? Frankly, I know people who went through low paid apprenticeship schemes but ended up far better off than did university graduates. The fact is, you can’t put a price on career education so educate those who follow in your footsteps.

OTHERS THINK IT I DO get fed up with people telling me I’m merely being paranoid when I discuss the decline of the UK and its society.

These people (and I’m delighted to say there are now far fewer than in the past!) seem to forget, that in my dual role as a working entertainer and columnist, I speak, and am contacted by a tremendous number of so called ‘ordinary folk,’ from all walks of British life.

I can tell you quite categorically, they are all totally peed off with what is happening to our once great country.

They are sick of the leniency shown toward criminals, they are sick of the laws and ‘human rights’ apparently favouring ethnic and other minorities and they are heartily sick of Islamic bigots who seem to be able to get away with just about anything.

still allowed to be aired just about anywhere, and even when they contain blatant, hate provoking anti-British rhetoric, are still seemingly ‘blind eyed’ by the authorities. In my cabaret spot, I have a couple of fairly light digs at the ‘changing face’ of Britain. When I first used the remarks they were met mainly by an almost embarrassed silence. As time went on the odd chuckle crept in.

The same remarks are now greeted not only by laughter, but often applause.

A more accurate barometer for the changing attitude of the British public would be hard to imagine.

I suggest Dave and the team start speeding up the instigation of a few of their election promises, before a thoroughly fed up British public begin to take to the streets. If that happens then (heaven forbid) the prophecies of Enoch Powell may well finally come to pass.

The top 100 inventions that changed our lives

by Lorna Eade DOES it make you feel old to know that the Dyson’s vacuum was 20 last year? Or that the Sony Walkman and the world’s first ever laptop, the Epson HX-20, are both over 30 years old?

These are just a few of the gadgets that have made it onto the 100 gadgets of the past century we can’t live without, ranging from the humble zip to the Playstation 4.

A list has been compiled following a survey of 3,900 gadget fans commissioned by Gadget Show Live. It reveals how, despite the pace of technological development, gadgets invented at the start of the 20th century still play a major part of our everyday lives, like the zip, first invented in 1913. However the technology was slow to catch on with the public. It wasn’t until Esquire magazine heralded the zip as the ‘newest tailoring idea for men’ in the 1950s that they really took off. In 1917, 24,000 zippers were sold. Today, Japan’s YKK, which makes close to half of all the zips in the world, churns out 7.2 billion zips a year.

The invention of the world’s first laptop, the Epson HX-20, in 1981, shows just how rapidly technology is moving forward. The Epson HX-20 had a four-line by 20-character LCD screen, a cassette tape for data storage and even a small printer. This was all packaged into a stylish silver casing and the entire system had a battery life of around 50 years.

The list also shows how gadgets have made an impact on our health and fitness over the last century, starting with the design of the artificial heart in 1941. This was followed swiftly by the kidney dialysis machine three years later, the Breathalyser in 1955, the hearing aid a year later and the pacemaker in 1958.

Technology has also become an integrated and much loved part of our kitchens thanks to inventions like Pyrex in 1915, the pop-up toaster in 1919 and electric kettle in 1922.

The year 1925 saw the arrival of the can opener, just seven years before the introduction of the electric version. The Teasmade has been brightening many a morning since 1933 and the microwave oven and Kenwood’s food mixer have been helping us make light work of cook ing since the 40s.

Family Matters THE weather has put a spell on us.

People who once were rational and reasonable cannot stand to be in a conversation. Tight lipped smiles from receptionists and cashiers, brightly voiced telephone marketers, fellow sweaty motorists: they all have to take the brunt of our unhappiness.

Everyday everyone speaks about the weather. Will it ever break? Have you heard there is another heat wave on the way? Did you hear the temperatures in Madrid? The air con, if you have it, has given you a cold, so you have heat exhaustion and a runny nose. No one has an appetite, not for food, nor work. The heat has removed all ambition or drive. Hey Speedy, what’s the hurry?

As the sun goes down so should the temperatures. But not in our stone walled house. Like a pizza oven it

The coolest place to be is on the streets, or in the village pool. We read that beer is almost as good at rehydrat-

ing as water, this is good news for local custom so ice cold cañas all round.

We wake, we turn, we drink some water; we cannot bear to touch the clammy skin of our bed partners. We shower and return to bed dripping with water, thrilled that for a few minutes we will find relief as the air from the fan blows across our dampened skin. Then we sleep again, a little.

We wake, we turn, we sleep. Sometimes we dream. But the dreams are confused, anxiety dreams of losing children, or missing a train dressed only in our underwear. When we wake, from a dark water pool into the morning we are wet through. When we rise we leave behind salty traces on the bed sheets where our limbs once were.

Impossible to believe three months ago we had electric blankets and heaters on. The jumpers and trousers are folded away in a cupboard, guarded by mothballs and plastic wrappers.

CROWDED beaches are one of my pet hates. So when friends invited us to a beach picnic the other week, it was only under threat from the Princess regarding the separation of certain parts of my body from the rest of it, I reluctantly agreed to go.

I am not anti-social - far from it - but my fears were confirmed when we arrived at a busy La Zenia Beach full of screeching kids and the thumping sound of Zumba music.

Luckily it was late afternoon, and so after shuffling around in the sand for a bit and much to my relief and surprise, we eventually found a fairly open space to plonk ourselves down.

Near to us was an encampment of young, well built (damn it) good looking Spanish blokes who were simply standing around posing. Nothing much was being said and I thought to myself: why the heck don’t you take a swim or at least engage in a bit of banter, instead of admiring yourselves like a bunch of Narcissuses... or is that narcissi?

The photo was published in one of the red tops known for sensationalising headlines, with the newspaper’s editor claiming it was essential for the “public’s interest.” It shows Queen Elizabeth’s uncle, Edward, who was briefly crowned King in 1936, instructing the young girl on how to do the salute.

As a child of seven, in 1933, it is inconceivable she could be aware of the connotations of this act and must have been totally unaware of the despicable scheme behind Hitler’s Nazi party.

Military historian, James Holland, also points out that the smiling, laughing faces in the picture indicate the salute was probably a harmless joke.

While Edward was known to have Nazi sympathies, the Queen mother and King George were absolutely opposed to Nazism.

The tabloid newspaper that caused this storm clearly saw an opportunity to exploit these naïve gestures. To try to develop the story behind the image by branding the princess as a Nazi is a cynical attempt at sensationalising a historical image and manipulating the context, and it distracts fromevents going on in the UK and abroad right now which deserve our attention.

A SPANISH company is hoping that the traditional ‘baby on board’ sign for vehicles will soon be a thing of the past, as they have patented a new design which they hope will be the future.

Patrimi Innovacion has designed ‘Babyled,’ an illuminated triangular sign which will warn other vehicles when a baby is on board by use of LED lighting.

The device does not have harmful electrical waves or wires and composes two parts.

The first is a pressure mat which is put in place in the child seat of the car. The second part is the illuminated triangle which is designed to be stuck to the rear window of the car and is removable.

When the child is placed in the seat, the sensor becomes aware of its presence and so illuminates the sign, switching it back off once the pressure is eased by the removal of the child.

The manufacturer is confident that the device is legal for use in Spain and state the product is certified and complies with all cur-

rent regulations and that is does not contravene any road safety regulations.

It comes with a certificate in the box which they say will allow the driver to present the facts to a law enforcement officer in the event of being stopped or questioned about the device.

However, with a price tag of just under €80 for Babyled despite batteries that can last up to 13 years, the traditional sticker may still be the preferred option for many.

No joy for the euro Commentary by Moneycorp EUR Last week’s optimism has faded since Greece came to an ‘agreement’ with its creditors. Alexis Tsipras returned to Athens with proposals significantly harsher than those he had previously rejected, which the Athens parliament then approved under duress. Since then everyone involved has been keen to say how much they dislike the deal and how it will not work without the debt relief which they all agree is necessary but refuse to concede for fear of a domestic electoral backlash.

A lot more work must be done to achieve a solution that will not just turn out to be another postponement of the day of reckoning. Investors are therefore still not overjoyed with the euro.

Over the last seven days it has lost two US cents and is down by four and a half cents against sterling. Further pain looks likely.

USD For the dollar and the British pound the week was all about central bankers and interest rates.

Federal Reserve chairperson Janet Yellen told a congressional committee that she still expects an increase in the Federal Funds rate to come this year as long as the economic data remain robust.

Bank of England governor told a parliamentary

committee that time of the first Bank Rate increase “is moving closer” and later said it was likely to be “around the turn of the year.”

Both the dollar and the pound strengthened on their central bank chief’s comments. They were also helped by continued uncertainty about Greece’s relationship with the euro. Sterling got the best result among the major currencies, strengthening by two and a half US cents on the week. The dollar took second place, adding two cents against the euro.

CAD There were not many bright moments for the Loonie in the last seven days. Friday’s Canadian employment data ought to have been a help: Instead of the expected 10k job losses only 6.4k disappeared and unemployment was steady at 6.8 per cent rather than rising to 6.9 per cent as expected. But investors were not impressed.

They were even less impressed on Wednesday when the Bank of Canada lowered its benchmark interest rate from 0.75 per cent to 0.5 per cent.

Although the move was not entirely unexpected its immediate effect was to send the Loonie a cent lower. The Canadian dollar was not the only commodity-related currency to receive a tonking: the NZ dollar took an even bigger hit. Even so,

AUD It was a difficult week all round for the commodity-related currencies. The Aussie got off lightest, losing half a US cent and falling by four and three quarter cents against sterling to a six-year low. (By way of consolation, the NZ dollar also touched its lowest level since April

2009 and the Canadian dollar hit a seven-year low.)

None of the Australian economic statistics was particularly troubling to the Aussie. A fall in mortgage lending did no damage and weaker consumer confidence was offset by improved business confidence. The problem was the same old one; Australia’s economy is not at its brilliant best.

By contrast, central bankers in Washington and London were telling congressional and parliamentary committees interest rates are about to turn upwards, ‘this year’ in the States and ‘around the turn of the year’ in Britain. Sterling achieved the week’s best result and the US dollar took silver.

NZD It was a difficult week. The Canadian dollar fell further, to a seven-year low, after the Bank of Canada unexpectedly lowered its benchmark interest rate. Perversely, that rate cut by the BoC was even more damaging to the Kiwi because it led investors to believe a cut by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand next Thursday had become all but inevitable.

Care and attention is the best medicine for barking dogs I remain horrified. I still fail to understand how you or a vet can suggest the use of a drug to stop adverse behaviour in dogs caused “when the owner leaves the dog.” I reiterate: would you drug a child because it is crying continuously after being left alone?

What about showing a little humanity and consideration for the dog? It doesn't ask for much, does it? Just a little love, shelter, food, water and exercise... and what do you know, this “separation anxiety, a complex behaviour disorder” you speak of, will magically disappear!

Owners that cannot or will not do this for their dogs or other animals should not have them in the first place.

Dogged by noise WE read your article on barking dogs. We are in a situation where our neighbour’s two dogs bark at everything, even things some distance from the house - joggers, cyclists, etc. We are embarrassed when we have visitors or family staying as the dogs are continually barking. When we purchased our property our neighbours did not have dogs. We wouldn’t have bought this house if they had.

We are in the situation where our neighbours no longer speak to us!!

It appears that we have no option but to contact our president and administrator. If this has no effect then it will have to be as your columnist suggested and contact the Guardia Civil.

What a great night my wife and I had at the Elton John concert in Malaga last week. A consummate performer, a fantastic show, a total class act. I hope that other such legends see Malaga as a city worth adding to their tour dates.

My mother just the other day was saying that the BBC go against their own policies, by withholding the truth from the British public.

They are controlled by lobbies and are not independent any more, they push their own agendas on to us.

But no one seems to care. I know we can’t to do anything about it, but we could at least talk about it.

But as soon as we talk about it we get labelled ‘tin foil helmets’! I’m

Day of rest WITH reference to the recent story in your Almeria edition which said most retailers prefer to stick to the traditional sales time, in my time in the south of Spain, I’ve been greatly impressed by shops’ attitudes to preserving traditions.

It took some time to get used to the fact that major retailers wouldn’t open on Sundays and holidays, but now I’m prepared, I love that they respect this time for rest and family.

I can only presume your ‘Disgusted’ correspondent was trolling this Letters page when he or she wrote that the Greeks were “laughing all the way to the bank” with the bailout deal, as if this were money ordinary Greeks would now spend on sports cars and Jacuzzis.

Greek people, already impoverished, now face further horrific austerity, the dismantling of their welfare state and privatisation of public assets, while the ‘bailout’ covers interest on a loan that will never be paid off.

‘Disgusted’ is right to make the comparison with a person given a loan they can never repay - that loan would either be written off as illegal or the person could be declared bankrupt and move on with their life.

Greece instead must remain forever in hock to the international banks with the EU acting as the bailiffs.

The heartlessness of 'Disgusted' makes Angela Merkel look like a kindly aunt.

THE integrity and values of Madrid’s mayor, judge emeritus Manuela Carmena who does not belong to any party, are not in doubt.

Sadly, the same cannot be said of some of her councillors. Guillermo Zapata got the boot as Culture councillor almost immediately after taking office, thanks to tasteless and unfunny jokes he once sent on Twitter.

Now Finance councillor Carlos Sanchez has done city hall another disservice with hints about a tourist tax and a levy on cash dispensers.

“All a misunderstanding!” Carmena had to make clear the following day.

With minions like that the mayor hardly needs constant criticism from the PP opposition party to undermine her efforts: her own collaborators are doing it for her.

Surprise package SPAIN’S president Mariano Rajoy still reminds voters about the situation he inherited from his socialist predecessor Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.

No-one would deny that the economy was in a bad way, but Rajoy also inherited the problem of regional governments in Partido Popular hands that spent money as though it was going out of fashion during Zapatero’s two terms. Spain now faces a €19 million fine from Brussels because the Valencian Community cooked its books and lied about its deficit. That’s one sin which can’t be laid at Zapatero’s door.

Amputations due to diabetes DIABETES is a growing global problem and in the UK there are now an estimated 3.9 million adults suffering from the condition.

Driven by the obesity epidemic, more than 135 patients undergo an amputation every week due to the condition; a number that has increased by 17 per cent in the last five years.

Diabetes UK said 80 per cent of amputations could be avoided if people with diabetes were given the necessary care as they say many doctors miss early signs of problems showing in hands and feet.

Diabetes can cause poor circulation which can lead to amputations and so it is always recommended to get regular foot checks.

A reader who lives in Huercal-Overa enquired about this service but had little luck when trying to learn more.

“Could you explain how the transla-

tion system works?” Jo Brook asked us.

“How do you set it up when you are at the hospital? Does the person who wants the translation contact the translation line, or what?”

We contacted Salud Responde, the information and services centre for the regional government’s Health department.

They explained that when a patient re-

quests the Servicio de Teletraduccion Linguistica, the doctor attending them at their local primary health centre, hospital or A and E will contact the translation service. The interpreter is not physically present but both doctor and patient receive a simultaneous tele-translation.

Launched in 2009, it operates 24 hours a day, all year, and is in 48 languages.

Gay men’s chorus back in town RETURNING to Mallorca with an updated, flamboyant, musical extravaganza

THE UK recently experienced something of a heatwave. Phew! Whatever next! However, as much as people say they love hot weather, endless and expensively-conducted ‘research’ suggests that people are in reality far more aggressive and violent when it does get hotter.

Now, I had a colleague in the UK, whom I will call ‘K,’ because her name is Katie (and no, not Hopkins!), who couldn’t stand the heat or the cold. During particularly long, hot summers, K could always be relied on to start whinging. About not getting any sleep at night, everyone being more impatient, wanting things yesterday while she waddled around like a tortoise on Valium ... You get the drift. And during long, freezing winters she was equally irritable, waddling around miserably in her Puffa coat like a human igloo.

IN A HEATWAVE: Brits try to carry on as normal and it doesn’t work.

The woman was - and I’m going to use a technical term here - an absolute hoot. Batty as a box of frogs of course. And I’m reminded here, too, of the Nobel-winning playwright Samuel Beckett’s famous line from Waiting for Godot: “We are all born mad.”

Some remain so.

But the bottom line here is that Brits just aren’t used to extreme changes in the weather - and that it takes time to adapt.

Those of us who live in a hot country like Spain know that the pace of life is slower, people have a siesta in the middle of the day etc. Whereas during an all-too-brief mini-

heatwave in the UK, Brits try to carry on as normal and it just doesn’t work: they end up hot and bothered.

Worse still, if they do have the opportunity, they’ll rush outside in their lunch break to roast to a nice shade of mahogany (mad dogs and Englishmen, don’t you know) when more thoughtful folk will be staying indoors or at least in the shade.

I suppose you could say the Brits are to dealing with extreme temperatures what Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky were to stain removing. Occasional participants, but not terribly skilful.

Well, so much for daft research. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a meeting with the fairies at the bottom of my garden.

EACH year many plants succumb to problems related to the hot summer sun, the searing heat of strong winds from North Africa and parallel poor watering.

Some gardeners look on in bewilderment as plant after plant die. Unfortunately the reasons are frequently human and not quirks of nature.

Here we look at some of the primary reasons for plants dying.F AILURES. Over Optimism 1. Assuming that Spanish plants do not need watering as they are natural to Spain. This is incorrect. They do until they get their tap roots down which may take several years of nursing.

2. Delaying watering because a summer storm is forecast. Unfortunately they often pass by!

Forgetfulness/ Poor Organisation 3. Unclear agreement as to who waters what, where and when.

4. A failure to remember that you planted an expensive special plant in an out of the way part of the garden last week or perhaps last month and forgetting to water it or extend the drip watering system.

5. With a busy social life you are not around to water in the cool of the late evening or up early enough in the morning to water before the temperature has soared.

Par Boiling Plant Foliage and Roots 6. Watering in the midday sun rather than early morning or late evening.

7. Watering with scalding water from a hose that has been lying in the sun for most of the day. Always ensure that you run off the hot water onto a terrace before starting to water.

8. Using hot washing up water to water plants convenient to the kitchen door. Cool it down first.

Underwatering 9. Failure to water hanging baskets, containers and beds of annuals daily, even twice daily on the hottest days. Help yourself by planting in semi-shade and not in full sun.

10. Letting newly purchased plants dry out before planting and then failing to water and nurse plants back to full strength before planting out.

11. Shallow daily watering of surface of root ball instead of deep watering three times a week to reach the base of the root ball and tap roots.

Poor Planting In Pots/ Containers 12. Using a fast drying soil in containers/pots/raised beds rather than a water absorbing compost to which a small quantity of water retaining gel such as TerraCottem has been added.

13. Use of thin walled terracotta pots that dry out very quickly by capillary action.

Spend a little more and buy heavier thicker walled or sealed pots. Also ensure you use a drainage tray for retaining water.

Burning of Foliage or Roots 14. Watering non-acid (alkaline) loving plants with the back wash of the swimming pool. Our neighbour unknowingly killed off some of our chrysanthemum frutscens but luckily the more resistant acid soil loving rock roses and lantanas survived.

15. Foliage feeding with over strength foliar fertilizer, especially when done in full sun and when the leaves are very dry. Do follow recommended dilutions. It is better to use at half strength and feed at double the recommended frequency.

16. Over application of granular fertilizer especially around the trunk rather than around the natural rain drip line.

Setting up a budget is one of the first steps to follow before taking on this project.

There are several grants issued by public institutions that can help us alleviate the money

charged on a renovation project.

The Spanish Development Ministry issues two kinds of aids: the first one is called Programa de Fomento de la Rehabilitacion Edificatoria (Promoting Building Rehabilitation) and can be requested by owners

of homes built before 1981 and covers works which are aimed at improving its state of conservation, guaranteeing accessibility or improving energy efficiency.

Depending on the kind of renovation works we wish to perform, the amount of money

varies: up to €4,000 for home conservation, €2,000 to improve energy consumption and up to €4,000 to make our home more accessible (especially in the case of having an inhabitant with disabilities).

The second aid is called Programa de Fomento para la re-

generacion y renovacion urbana (Promoting regeneration and urban renovation).

This programme helps recipients to perform improvement works on public spaces (up to €11,000) or construct in areas after a building has been demolished (up to €30,000).

Autonomous communities have independent programmes, mainly aimed at adapting a home for a person with reduced mobility. Works include adapting a toilet, room or stairs for their use.

Improving a home can be much cheaper than expected.

Country’s economy catching up on the last 10 years THE end of the property crisis was confirmed recently by the Bank of Spain and the government has stated that the country’s economy is growing at its fastest rate since 2008 - close to 4 per cent in the first six months of 2015 compared with the same period last year. The Bank of Spain has predicted growth of 6.6 per cent in 2016.

In the majority of Spanish property markets where Lucas Fox operates, peak sales occurred in 2007, with prices maintained for slightly longer in the more resilient areas. Asking prices peaked as late as mid-2008. Prices fell up to 40 per cent in most areas but less

severe drops were seen in the lifestyle-conscious markets of the Balearics and the most desirable areas of Marbella.

In Mallorca, properties have almost reached average sales prices matching those in 2008, with 2015 first quarter average prices at €3,010 per square metre (only €31 lower than in 2008). Marbella has seen more of a drop: average prices in 2008 were €2,733 per square metre then, and ended the first quarter of 2015 at €2,313 per square metre.

Barcelona has seen a steady decline in asking prices each quarter until the third quarter of 2013, and has been slowly rebuilding average asking sales prices since then.

Over the past 10 years, Barcelona’s average sales prices peaked at €4,732 per square metre in 2007, dropping to a low of €2,957 per square metre in the third quarter of 2013, before slowly rising again to start 2015 at an average asking sales price of €3,263 per square metre.

Madrid and Valencia have followed a similar pattern but with less of an upswing in prices, with 2014 seeing prices level out.

The report shows that both cities have yet to sustain quarterly increases in asking prices during 2015.

Those particularly at risk of getting heatstroke are small cats and dogs, hamsters, guinea pigs and other small animals.

More recently their holidays have been headed further south in the Mediterranean to Italy and Spain; the longer journeys haven’t suited Daisy as well.

So mum and dad have found house-sitters to care of her while they go away.

The sitters are experienced and happen to be based in Buckinghamshire in the UK where Daisy’s family is based. The owners went online to find their sitters. They knew about dogs, and had owned Cocker Spaniels over the years themselves, but now they are both retired they wanted to travel and see the world.

Small animals are very sensitive to heat.

They find it very difficult to regulate their body temperature and people need to be aware of the precautions they need to take to protect them.

Dogs and cats also need plenty of ventilation when travelling, so car windows should be wound down to provide enough air and they should be given water at regular intervals. Never allow your dog to have its head out of the window as this can cause damage to the eyes.

Sitting in a traffic jam with the sun beating down on the car can have disastrous consequences for your dog. He or she may seem fine but don’t forget that however hot you feel, they feel even hotter.

A metal car can turn into an oven and if they do not have enough ventilation and water they could die before your journey is over.

Never leave a pet in a car unattended.

Small dogs should beware of seagulls THE recent case of a pet dog which was killed by an aggressive seagull in a Cornwall garden may be cause for alarm, but don’t let it stop you letting your dog run free.

In the UK, seagulls are a protected species, including their eggs, chicks and nests, and Cornwall Council had to tell the Yorkshire Terrier’s owner that there was nothing they could do about it.

The dog was swooped on by a Herring gull which had landed on the roof of the house and, sadly, its head injuries meant it had to be put down.

It was the second at-

tack by gulls on small dogs, with a Chihuahua in Devon being killed a couple of weeks ago in a similar incident.

It is thought that the bird was protecting its nest and launched the attack on the small animal to care for its young.

Wildlife crimes officer, Paul Freestone said that people need to be aware of the law: “As soon as a gull lays down a few bits of material to start a nest, that nest is protected.”

Owners with small pets need to keep their eyes open for any signs of nesting birds and keep their dog close to hand.

Palma couple crowned Spanish champions NATIONAL winners of Access 303 Double class SAILORS Angel Vega and Carmen Garcia have become national winners of the Access 303 Double class in the Spanish championships, held between July 17 and 19 at Cambril’s Royal Nautical Club.

The Double 303 Access class features boats which are specially adapted for disabled sailors and the pair are members of the Handisport Foundation team at Palma’s Royal Nautical Club.

The foundation aims to integrate disabled participants into sport through making various sporting activities more accessible.

As well as winning Gold in the Doubles class, Angel also took the Silver medal in the individual c a t e g o r y. An oth e r p a ir from t h e Pa l m a t e a m , M ax i Dominguez and Ramon Gutierrez, just missed out on a medal by one point, coming fourth in the competition.

The individual championship was won by Toni Ferra from the Port d’Andatrx Sailing Club.

Learning to drive driv on the high seas MANY marinas and sailing schools offer help

WITH so many boats taking to the seas this summer, ports are choc-a-bloc with tourists and holidaymakers and negotiating in and out of port safely can be tricky, so if you are planning to navigate Spain’s waters and are not qualified or experienced, you might want to think about driving lessons.

With many categories of small boats, you don’t need a licence but having some lessons is advisable.

Many marinas and sailing schools offer help in learning how to leave berth and moor your boat on return, and these are essential skills for any budding sailor.

If you want to go further and achieve a basic boating qualification, the Autorizacion Federativa Nautico Deportiva (Titulin) is something you should seek out if you have a boat that is less than six metres long with an engine of less than 54CV and you will only use it in controlled waters during daylight.

If you are interested, this year’s Barcelona Boat Show in October actually has a special promotion by a group of exhibitors for buyers of small boats who will get an opportunity to get their Nautical Licence free of charge at a local school.

BOAT CHARTERS: Rules vary depending on the distance you are travelling.

Licence to charter a boat DIFFERENT rules and regulations apply to licences and permits for boat charters in the Balearic Islands, depending on the type of boat.

For sail boats up to five metres long and motor boats up to four metres long (with max power or up to 13CRV) you do not need a licence if you are planning a trip during daylight hours. Outside of these specifications, you will need a licence, and you may be fined or even have your boat confiscated if you are caught without the proper documentation.

The International Certificate

of Competence (ICC) is a document that verifies that the skipper of the vessel is competent in handling the boat abroad but it is not recognised for Spanish flagged boats, which need a document called a Titulo de recreo. However, UK flagged boats will have their ICC accepted.

Rules also vary for professional skippers depending on the distance you are travelling, but it is always best to check with the sailing company you are going with as to the documents you need. For trips up to four miles offshore with a max

eight metre long sailboat or max six metre long motor boat, a Basic Navigation Skipper Licence is needed.

Longer trips up to 12 miles offshore with a max 12 metres long motorboat will required the skipper to hold a Recreational Boats Skipper Licence and a Yacht Master Licence is essential for yachts sailing up to 60 miles offshore up to a maximum of 20 metres long.

Nevertheless, if you have a Yacht Captain licence the world is literally your oyster, as it allows you to sail any type of boat.

ONE of the most prestigious long distance regattas in the Mediterranean for double handed boats has been won by Audax Marina belonging to Jaime Binimelis and Miguel Santaursula, qualifying the Palma team for the Spanish Championships.

The 550 mile race, which was jointly organised by the Nautical Club of Garraf and the Associacion of Navegants Solitaris, started from the yacht club in Garraf, Catalunya, before sailing

up to Besos, Barcelona then around the island of Menorca and finishing back in Garraf.

The fastest time was held by the Royal Nautical Club of Palma team who sailed the course in two days, 13 hours and four minutes and 15 seconds, and won in elapsed time for the overall results.

Meanwhile Guillermo Duran’s Kyo V from CM San Antonio de Playa, which arrived 13 hours after the Palma team, was first overall in the single handed division.

By Tony Myles WHEN the dust has settled and the historians are describing the past few days golf at St Andrews, how will they choose to immortalise it?

There are a few stand-out highlights: * Fans of links golf The vagaries of the British weather will no doubt feature in any summary and of course the harsh conditions meant that the event was carried over for a fifth day when the main beneficiaries were the fans who were able to buy tickets for the final round for only £10. As everyone knows, when you play a golf competition at a seaside re-

sort in the UK then the only guarantee upon which you can rely is that the weather WILL play a part. But even the hardy regulars who play the course most frequently expressed surprise that play was allowed to begin on Saturday morning when any ball on a green did not merely waver it actually raced away.

Common sense eventually prevailed and play was cancelled until much later. * Nostalgia - Farewell to a superstar With a final emotional wave from the Swilcan Bridge, Tom Watson left after the first two days and the romantic hope that he would make the cut were dashed. * Newbies - Competing with the pros Congratulations to each of the five amateurs who made it into the final two rounds and for a while the possibility of Paul Dunne continuing his great run and winning outright seemed a real possibili-

ty. Then, as many were asking what would happen to the £1.15m winner’s purse, he lost his lead within the first couple of holes on the final round. * Three-man play-off Could there have been a better conclusion? The three players who extended the competition provided a grand finale and what an excellent ensemble with Louis Oosthuizen from South Africa, Zach Johnson from the USA and Marc Leishman from Australia. The winner of the Open Championship is crowned the Golf Champion and the name engraved on the trophy is Zach Johnson and clearly a deserving champion.

One final note is to say well done to anyone who selected these three guys in Campbell’s Major Wager not forgetting that Campbell actually tipped Louis Oosthuizen as the eventual winner.
