Inferno strikes mountains MAYOR of Lujar said his town ‘came close to hell’ By Maria Jose Fernandez SIX days after it started, the forest fire which raged in the mountains between Gualchos and Lujar (Costa Tropical) was finally extinguished yesterday (July 15).
A Level 1 risk was issued on July 9, as the blaze threatened residents’ lives and properties, and was only revised last Saturday (July 11). Fortunately, there was no loss of life, but 624 people had to be evacuated from areas in Lujar,
Rubite and Orgiva. “I have never been in hell, but my town came closest to it today,” said Mayor of Lujar, Mariano Gonzalez. Two thousand hectares have been destroyed.
