Together with another 24 Spanish towns they have been selected for the Top Ciudades 2015 project, with one of the 26 to be named a winner.

Just being named as one of the carefully selected contestants on the Hotel.info web-

site-backed competition is expected to give the towns involved a tourism boost with the extra publicity involved. Winning the title would be a major coup.

The online site is looking for the most charming towns with a population of below 60,000, which have a variety of tourist attractions, including an interesting old town, cultural centres and an extensive choice of activities for visitors.

The project is also promoted internation-

ally, and the winning town is expected to gain widespread recognition and a boost to its visitor numbers.

To make Almuñecar or Rincon de la Victoria the winning town, those interested can vote at http://www.hotel.info/es/ citymoments/top-ciudades-2015/ before July 14. In addition, voters will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win five €200 gift cards from hotel.info.

By Maria Jose Fernandez THOUSANDS of people across the Axarquia and Costa Tropical called upon the patron saint San Juan on Tuesday (June 23) to bring the best of luck for the year.

In keeping with tradition, the coasts filled up with music, drinks, fish ‘espetos’ (sardine skewers) and of course bonfires.

The bravest ones jumped over the fires and many took part in the traditional nocturnal swim at midnight.

Carchuna, Calahonda and Torrenueva festivities were a delight for children as they were able to jump the night away on bouncy castles. There was also a foam party accompanied by electronic music.

The traditional ‘Bollo de San Juan’, a

bread roll with a baked egg in the middle, was savoured in Almuñecar and La Herradura, as it is a typical delicacy.

As many as 350 kilos of espetos were handed out at El Copo beach in Torre del Mar and another 50 kilos in Benajarafe.

Strong winds and waves in Nerja did not deter residents, who crowded Burriana beach for live music and an open-air party.

By Steve Walsh THE Lanjaron water and ham festival has just taken place at the home of the famous natural springs of the Alpujarras in Granada. It adds a strange twist to the San Juan fiestas elsewhere in Spain.

Coastal towns typically celebrate San Juan by setting up camp on the beach and indulging in all-night parties and barbeques with music and dancing to accompany the bonfires. But the locals of Lanjaron celebrate June 23 by staging a huge water fight, saturating anyone and everyone who dares to cross their

path. The festivities normally last four or five days. Malaga mothers are breaking the trend BIRTH rates are on the up for the first time since 2009, the National Statistics Institute (INE) has reported.

Last year 15,628 babies were born in Malaga Province, 0.8 per cent more than in

2013, the INE revealed. Although a modest increase, this was well above the national average (0.1 per cent).

Although the good old days for midwives when the province registered almost

20,000 births per year are still a thing of the past, the drops seen during the financial crisis as people left the area in search of greener fields and couples put off parenthood due to lack of work, the trend

has started to change.

The crude birth rate, which is the number of births per 1,000 inhabitants per year, in Granada Province has also increased by 0.68 per cent, says the INE.

This figure indicates the first growth registered in Granada since 2009. Before that, a positive trend which started in 2000 was established up until the first years of the financial crisis.

BEACH BAN: Dog will not be allowed from June 1 to September 30.

By Eleanor Hawkins COSTA dogs have been banned from their designated beaches for the summer.

In a note sent to 14 seaside towns in Malaga Province, the Junta de Andalucia regional government stated that dogs will not be allowed on beaches

where bathing is permitted for humans.

Casares, Manilva, Marbella, Fuengirola, Mijas, Estepona which recently applied to create a dog beach but had its petition turned down - Benalmadena, Torremolinos, Malaga City and Rincon de la Victoria - which share a dog beach between the

two - Torrox, Velez-Malaga, Nerja and Algarrobo, have all received the notification. It has also been sent to the Western Costa del Sol and Axarquia municipality commonwealths and the Equality, Health and Social Policies Department.

Health and environmental governing boards have decided

that they go against Decree 194/1998 (October 13).

Therefore, in accordance with the decree – which is the base for regulations regarding hygiene and safety surveillance for bathing areas - during the bathing season (from June 1 to September 30) pets are banned from waters and bathing areas.

Granada youths want to work MORE and more Granada youngsters want a chance to gain access to the labour market.

The number of students who are currently looking for a job through the national employment office has increased

by 69 per cent, according to a study by employment search engine Randstad.

The data analysed corresponds to the period between 2008 and 2015, which shows that the number of students looking for employment has gone from

1,041 in 2014 to 1,759 in 2015, a number similar to the Andalucian increase average, which also sat at 69 per cent (from 10,469 to 17,716).

In national terms, the data displays a 28 per cent growth.

Slippery accidents A LARGE puddle of fuel in the area of Almuñecar ’s Calle Guadix, caused two accidents injuring two motorbike riders.

The fuel and water slick extended from Calle Torres Quevedo to the San Cristobal Bridge.

The first accident involved a couple whose motorbike slipped on the puddle. The rider fell from the bike and was aided by bystanders until the Local Police, fire brigade and health care staff arrived. While his wife didn’t sustain injuries, the man had to be taken to the hospital with severe injuries.

After that, another man spun out of control on his bike due to the spill, suffering minor injuries.

Authorities are currently investigating the case to find the party responsible for such a large fuel leak.

Children’s good news AT LEAST 840 children in need will be saved from going hungry thanks to summer schools laid on in the poorest areas of Malaga Province.

The measure, announced by the Junta de Andalucia regional government as part of its Guaranteed Nutrition Programme, means 11 schools in Malaga City, Velez-Malaga, Marbella and Ronda will give youngsters from poverty-stricken families somewhere to go from 9am to 3pm and along with activities they will be given breakfast, a cooked lunch and an afternoon snack to take home with them.

Junta delegate for Malaga Jose Luis Ruiz Espejo explained that although initially 840 places will be available at the summer schools, due to run from July 1 to August 31, more children will probably be taken in as was the case last year.

First centre for youths REVEALED: Plans for the new youth centre.

By Maria Jose Fernandez YOUNG people across Rincon de la Victoria will soon have a space t o cal l t hei r own.

The new l ocal gover nment (PSOE, Ahora Rincon, Izquierda Unida and Partido Popular) have begun writing and designing the project for the town’s first ever Casa de la Juventud (Youth Centre).

The facilities will be located on the ground floor of the multi-use centre in La Cala del Moral, visited last week by Youth Councillor, Ezequiel Carnero, and other council representatives.

“Youngsters in Rincon de l a Vi ct or i a wi l l see t hei r need for a space satisfied and have room to develop

their activities and to meet up with others,” said Mayor Encarnacion Anaya.

Car ner o expl ai ned t hat the new centre would have offices, boardrooms, creative areas, an information point, vending machines, WiFi services and two rehearsal rooms for local music bands.

Cleaning flotilla sets sail THE Axarquia region will this year have 10 boats working to keep its coasts spotless.

Acting President of the Commonwealth of Costa del Sol-Axarquia municipalities and Mayor of Torrox, Oscar Medina, together with Velez-Malaga Mayor, Antonio Moreno, presented the coastal cleaning deployment which will take care of waters and beaches during this year’s summer season.

The team is made up of 10 boats, one more than in 2014, and the service will run until September 15, having been awarded to local company Servimar Axarquia for under €300,000.

Medina said the budget was significantly lower than the money paid a few years ago, which amounted to €500,000.

The craft will be distributed amongst the region’s towns: Velez-Malaga will have three boats; Nerja and Torrox two each, and Algarrobo and Rincon de la Victoria will have one each.

“Having awarded the services to a local company, this represents the creation of around 20 employment positions in the area,” said Mayor Moreno.

Beach objective: Q for Quality COMMISSION set up to achieve the prestigious award

By Maria Jose Fernandez A SPECIAL coastal commission has been set up in Torre del Mar. The commission’s first and most immediate goal is obtaining the Q for Quality certificate for three of its beaches,

according to Beach Councillor and Deputy Major, Jesus Atencia.

They are the Torre del Mar, Caleta and Benajarafe beaches, which will undergo a comprehensive inspection on June 30 to determine what aspects need to be improved.

The Q for Quality is the most demanding and prestigious certification that Spanish beaches can receive, as it comes directly from the Tourism Ministry. There are currently 225 beaches in the country accredited with this award.

A for effort for Granada youths who stick to their studies GRANADA students seem to enjoy opening their books as the province has registered the lowest rate of early school-leaving in the whole of Andalucia.

Specifically, 25.4 per cent of students leave school early, while the average for the Andalucian region sits at 32.1 per

cent and the national average is 26.5 per cent.

The rate has been calculated by the R eg io n al Educ a tion D e pa rtme nt by analysing the percentage of residents aged between 18 and 24 years old who are not in school and only have only received secondary or lower education.

Valerie Williams has the ability to inspire others to bring out the best in themselves.

HAILING from Anglesey in lovely Welsh Wales, Val Williams, with her natural ability to make people smile, has lived in Spain for more than 30 years.

Her bubbly ‘let’s get things done’ attitude to life has ensured that not only has she made great things happen for people, she also makes other people want to make thing happen as well.

This is what some call natural leadership, the ability to inspire others to bring out the best in themselves and achieve things for the general good, to lead by example and encourage those who follow to do the same.

Not that Val would see it that way, she’s a little too modest to see the effect she has on people around her.

Her philosophy of being able to cope and just get on with things when others don’t has become her trademark, and the reason 900 people turned up for a sold-out 30th anniversary concert this month for her Salon Varietés theatre.

More than 30 years ago when Salon Varietés in Fuengirola, opened its doors to the public, Spain was very much in vogue.

Thousands flocked from all over Europe to soak up the continental lifestyle and be a part of the big social picture that was the Costa del Sol. Unfortunately, some years later the bubble bust, and for various other reasons, people fell out of love with the beautiful venue.

The Friends of the Theatre Association (FOTA) at that stage was

only a couple of dozen diehard actors needing help.

This is where Val saw her calling. Not long after selling her large hotel in Anglesey and moving to Spain, she found herself with some time on her hands, and when asked to volunteer her marketing expertise in order to rebuild the

theatre, she willingly set to work.

“I have never forgotten what my professor at university told me: ‘If you make yourself useful to people and your country, you will always be happy.’ And he was right. I am happy,” she chuckled.

“I have always found that the best way to get something done, no matter how big the task, is to just get on with it and be happy to do so. Pretty soon, either others join in and help or they walk away,” Val said.

Maybe this is why she finds herself surrounded by helpful and happy friends.

Val’s philosophy has obviously proved to be successful; even though it has taken a lot of hard work over the years, FOTA now has more than 500 happy members who enjoy regular functions, excursions, holidays and events all personally organised by Val. The theatre is a roaring success, and regularly puts on fantastic shows for adoring full houses.

The 76-years-young widow and proud mother of three has now spent the best part of three decades bringing a dead culture back to life.

To speak of live theatre on the Costa del Sol and not mention Val’s name isn’t possible, nor is it possible to think of FOTA or Salon Varietés without thinking of Val Williams; they are one and the same, a shining example of what can be achieved in the face of adversity with a determined, cheerful spirit.

Danish tourist found dead in Torre del Mar POLICE report signs of several bruises on the body

By Maria José Fernandez THE body of a 40-year-old Danish woman was found on Sunday (June 21) with signs of violence at a hotel in Torre del Mar. Her husband, a 50-year-old from Denmark, was taken into custody by the National Police force who reported that the woman was on holiday in the town, together with another Danish couple.

ALL eyes were on Motril’s sky on Sunday as it celebrated its International Air Festival with a recordbreaking attendance of more than 50,000 people.

The post mortem examination indicated she died from choking, although experts said the test was inconclusive. It also proved that the woman had consumed drugs and alcohol before the events took place.

Both had a criminal record in Denmark for drug consumption.

However, specialists have not been able to determine how she choked to death. Her husband currently has been re-

manded to prison and charged with homicide due to several contradictions on the story.

According to his version, the night before he had found his wife on the bathroom floor with the hairdryer ’s cable around her neck. He claimed he had put her on the bed after performing resuscitation manoeuvres.

The next morning, he said, he thought she could be dead and asked the hotel reception-

Slot machine raiders caught in Granada GANG believed responsible for a series of thefts

By Maria Jose Fernandez FIVE Romanian citizens have been arrested in connection with a series of break-ins in a number of towns across Granada Province, with bars and restaurants the main targets.

Police reported that the gang concentrated on slot machines. To retrieve the cash, they used a mallet and covered their faces with balaclavas to avoid being identified by cameras. Once inside the establishments, they would also help them-

selves to money from the cash register, as well as steal alcohol and other items.

The accused are believed to have carried out robberies at nine restaurants and bars in Gualchos, Motril, AlmuĂąecar, Velez de Benaudalla, Orgiva and Guadix, between October 2014 and June 2015, having obtained a total of â‚Ź24,000 worth of cash and goods.

Police also believe they were responsible for a vehicle theft in Motril last November.

They have been remanded to prison.

Motril Port police stop stolen car smuggling suspects GUARDIA CIVIL officers have arrested two men at Motril Port for reportedly using counterfeit documents to take a vehicle across the border.

The detainees are an Italian and a Moroccan national, aged 33 and 36, who were intercepted by the authorities during a routine control at

the ferry boarding gates.

Police officers found several anomalies in the vehicle documents and, upon contacting the Italian authorities, found that the car had been reported stolen in Italy.

The two men were taken into custody and charged with document forgery.

Residents invited to help plan fair THE Fairs and Festivities Department in Rincon de la Victoria has called on all residents of Cala del Moral to decide on the content and programme of the upcoming fair.

“It is the first time that a participation board has been created to hear suggestions, proposals and new initiatives for the celebration of the municipal fair,” said head of the department, Alina Caravaca.

A meeting took place at the Casa de la Cultura in La Cala

del Moral on Monday (June 22), and council representatives took on board suggestions on possible modifications to reduce the budget as well as which musical performance residents would most like to attend, amongst other matters.

The fair will take place between July 3 and 5.

The council also stated that the Rincon de la Victoria fair, scheduled to be held between July 16 and 19, would also be launching this popular initiative.

Artists celebrate Almuñecar colour RICH hues form the theme for this latest exhibition

By Maria Jose Fernandez ART enthusiasts can now enjoy the myriad of Almuñecar ’s colours at an exhibition called ‘Colores de Almuñecar’.

Held at the Casa de la Cultura it has been organised by the Almuñecar Artist Associa-

tion Artex, and features work by several local artists The exhibition can be visited until the end of June between 11am and 1pm and from 7pm to 10pm, and is supported by the Culture Department of the town.

Folk concert in Nerja NERJA will be swept away with Spanish folklore as the Peña Nerjera choir organises the eighth edition of the traditional Coros Rocieros Choirs and for a good cause.

The event will take place tomorrow, Friday June 26, at

9pm at the town’s Cultural Centre for a price of €5, with all proceeds going to charity Nerja Solidaria.

The event will feature choirs Peña Mareña and El Lerele, as well as the dance group Angela, amongst oth-

er performances.

Members of Nerja Solidaria will also place a container at the entrance door for non-perishable food donations, which will be distributed to the town’s poorer families.

Talks begin to reinstate tram NEGOTIATIONS between the local government in Velez-Malaga and a transport company have started with the goal of bringing the controversial tram service back to town.

A statement released by the council announced that Mayor Antonio Moreno Ferrer and company Recfer Recursos Ferroviarios, led by Marcelo Gavira, have begun talks to restart the tram service after a three-year hiatus.

The company made operational the Barcelona highspeed AVE train, the Sevilla tram and installed infrastructure for the Lerida-La Pobla tram line.

“We believe the tram to be an ecological transport service, in accordance with the kind of town we want to build,” said the mayor.

With signs that the market is picking up it is more good news for the local economy and seen by travel and property professionals as a welcome fillip.

BBC World’s ‘The Travel Show’ crew and presenter Ade Adepitan met up with local estate agents in Denia to film the show, as well as British house-hunters including Lynne Dodwell, who was in town looking for her ideal home on the Costa Blanca.

The BBC’s interest is yet another indication that the property industry in the region is at last on the up. Statistics show that popular coastal communities of the Costa Blanca show a healthy upturn in sales over the last year, such as Javea with an increase in sales at 11 per cent. Local estate agent Emma Higginson of Villas-Plots.com confirmed: “It is true that sales have increased substantially, with apartments at €75,000 selling regularly and also costlier properties right up to €2.9 million.

By Jason Bailey DESPITE the seven hard years of the economic crisis, which some believe was worsened by Spain’s membership of the EU, Spanish people are proud to be European and determined to remain in the EU. The wide-ranging changes since Spain joined the EU in

1986 with regards to freedom of movement and trade are at the heart of Spain’s affection towards Europe.

The slight financial recovery has also been a contributing factor to the positive feeling about remaining within the EU but it is not just economic factors that are relevant.

Metroscopia, a trend assessing company, states that there is an emotional aspect to be considered. Its findings show that 74 per cent of Spaniards feel membership is beneficial and are proud to be part of the union. They also feel that Spain has grown and developed into a modern, forward-

thinking country as a result.

Another interesting fact from the survey was that 70 per cent of Spanish felt more secure within the EU, not only from those outside the union but from those within, as they believed it was unthinkable that there would be military conflict between members.

THE election of extreme farleft mayors in two of Spain’s major cities, Madrid and Barcelona, has caused shares in Spanish building companies to plummet.

It was thought that construction would pave the way for focused and positive economic growth in Spain. The favourable exchange rates, especially with regards to sterling, have encouraged a resurgence in the property market but that could all end very soon.

The new mayors were voted in on an austerity ticket and both have promised to halt the urban renewal projects which would have transformed the wastelands that have sat decaying since the property bubble burst in 2008.

The shares in Spanish construction companies have faltered since the elections in May.

Report predicts new developments will spring up on the Costa del Sol in 2016 DEVELOPERS now have their sights set on Malaga Province for new-build opportunities

By Staff Reporter PROPERTY valuation Company Tinsa predicts that constructors will create new developments on the Costa del Sol in 2016.

The company reveals there are around 400,000 unsold properties remaining in Spain, but by 2017 this figure will have been significantly reduced.

Developers now have their sights set on Malaga Province, particularly the coastal region, for newbuild opportunities. “There are professional developers that have been requesting very detailed studies looking for niches in the market,” the Technical Co-ordinator at TINSA Rafael Jiménez commented.

According to simulations, during 2015 and 2016, new developments will be returning in good locations oriented to the foreign market, particularly in the coastal region.

Marbella represents an indicator of the real estate market recovery for the whole area of the Costa del Sol and inland. In Malaga Province, prices seem to be stabilising, average house prices have increased by 4.8 per cent this year compared to 2013, with the highest increases on the Spanish

costas. The report also shows that in Fuengirola the resale market was sustained thanks to its popularity with the domestic buyer. However, there will be no new building there, due to lack of availability of suitable land, whereas in Mijas there are good sites with permission to build.

Bond-Based Investments – are yours really tax efficient?

By Mark Davies of The Fry Group There has been a clear change in Spain with “the system’s” approach to the declaration and tax assessment of investments and income in recent years. This has been driven by austerity measures and what for many used to be a relatively benign (or grey) tax declaration/assessment process has become largely black and white. While this is to be welcomed as it brings certainty in relation to what is required and correspondingly what planning is effective, the amount and speed of change has caught many expats on the hop.

Insurance investment bonds are one example.

These investment vehicles were and are widely held, with policies being Spanish qualifying or non-qualifying. While the rules were always clear, in the past little attention was paid by many local tax advisers to the qualifying status

of policies and most were afforded (one way or another) the favourable tax treatment as “Spanish Qualifying Policies”. This allows gross rollup of growth and income inside the policy, with attractive return of capital allowances where income was being taken. Non-qualifying policies do not enjoy gross roll-up, with income and gains being taxable annually.

As tax advisers have become more diligent, policies previously assessed as qualifying are being reviewed critically. This is an ongoing process and I suspect that many investors with non-qualifying legacy policies will have received or will be receiving a much less favourable assessment in due course.

The worry is that many who have been wrongly guided in the past and whilst acted in good faith will be held accountable for any under/mis-declaration. With Draconian tax penalties available to the taxman there may be un-

foreseen danger for many around the corner.

Correspondingly, if you have any doubt in relation to your investments and their status, we are here to assist.

There will be many readers already aware of the non-qualifying issue and are already paying the extra tax.

This group may well have considered the potential tax savings of placing assets into a new qualifying policy but have been loath to pay the cost of re-organising their affairs. Cost inertia is understandable in many cases given the set-up charges experienced by investors on existing policies is as high as 9 per cent spread over several years.

Hoax reveals a darker message KNEE-JERK reaction showed just how Muslim populations alienate others LEAPY LEE SAYS IT

OTHERS THINK IT INTERESTING reaction on my Facebook this week.

Some wag posted that the police would be overlooking Muslims speeding in their cars during Ramadan. This was, they added, due to the fact that during fasting, it’s possible to become somewhat disorientated and could subsequently lead to Muslim drivers being unaware they were actually breaking the law.

Well, I’m surprised the reaction didn’t crash the computer. The messages simply poured in.

Messages of disgust, anger, and even vitriolic hatred avalanched the site. A site, I may add, which is normally full of understanding folk, with quite a broad spectrum of love toward their fellow human beings.

It was of course a hoax. It was the knee-jerk reaction that I found interesting. It basically showed just how the Muslim populations are alienating those around them. They continually refuse to integrate. Well of course they do.

SYMBOL OF FAITH: All you need is a headscarf, not an intimidating burka.

Unless governments act, one day all our women will be clad in the revolting black symbol of Islamic oppression

That’s not the idea at all.

It is my understanding that the Koran tells them it is their purpose in life to spread the word of Islam. Many Muslims may not approve of the methods of some of their peers, but, in my opinion, many have the same goal.

To me the burka is the true symbol of their non-caring attitude toward the West. It is provocative, alien, and an affront to our cultures. It has no religious significance whatsoever and should, to my mind, be completely banned from public display. If these people want to show a symbol of their faith, a headscarf is a completely adequate way of expressing their leanings.

I also have an answer to those who ask why Islamists don’t go to countries where their customs and ways of life are accepted as the norm.

The reason is that those countries already follow the teachings of Islam. They don’t need to be there. They want to be in countries they can convert, thereby carrying out the instructions of their prophet and his Koran.

Believe me, unless governments begin to introduce rules and regulations that put Western values and democracy firmly back in the driving seat, all our women will one day be clad in what to me is the revolting black symbol of Islamic oppression.

ruption case.

On Wednesday (June 17) Mr Urdangarin’s defence presented a document at the court to inform case judge Jose Castor that the sale of their home in Pedralbes (Barcelona) had been closed and announced that they

would shortly transfer the money they committed to deposit back in December.

The quantity originally requested by the court has been reduced by around €3,000 due to mortgage interest, according to the text presented

by Mr Urdangarin’s lawyers.

Having a meal in a Spanish restaurant is also cheaper than the rest of the EU, costing just 88 per cent of the average European dinner out, according to Eurostat, the European Statistics Office, using data from 2014.

ment, at 101 per cent.

The report also names Poland as the cheapest country to buy food items, while Bulgaria has the cheapest restaurants and hotels. Clothing is cheapest in Hungary, while the Czech Republic is the least expensive for cars.

The statistics confirmed that Denmark, Sweden, Finland, the UK and Ireland are the most expensive countries to live in, while Bulgaria, Romania and Poland are the cheapest.

A possible double blow for expatriate pensioners AFTER reading Mike Butcher’s letter about pensions (EWN Issue 1563) I feel that we will be hit with a double blow. If the UK decides to leave the EU there is a possibility that our pensions will be frozen, as has happened to expats in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, etc.

I have emailed the Pensions Service and asked if this is the case and they replied that if this does happen, it would be the decision of the government. Given that Iain Duncan Smith has saved department costs by stopping our Winter Fuel Allowance, we would be very vulnerable (easy meat)!

Strong protest I AM writing to strongly protest an editorial in your pages about the FIFA scandal that somehow manages to slur against Jews and Arabs.

The editorial signed by Leapy Lee is offensive, irresponsible, outrageously anti-Semitic and inappropriate for any newspaper that expects to be taken seriously.

Making a crime report in Spain ON May 26, 2015, the process of making a crime or loss report to National Police (a denuncia) changed.

Previously the victim signed five copies of the report and was then given one as confirmation. Now there are four copies and the victim is not given a copy. If they insist on confirmation that they have made a report, all they get is a ‘certificate’ that a report was made.

It will show the crime report number, but not any details. If, say, Trafico, DVLC, an insurance company, etc, either in Spain or another country, require details of what was in the report, they will have to contact the National Police.

Despite asking the police, I cannot discover any plausible reason for the change, which will cause considerable inconvenience for victims and additional work for the police and other entities such as insurance companies.

NB: The Guardia Civil still provide copies.

Furthermore, you fail to mention that the Catholic Church, in particular the Vatican, invests billions in the world’s powerful corporations and banks and has as much influence.

I keep receiving messages with the portraits of lots of my ‘friends’ or their holiday snaps from all over the world. But the strange thing is I don’t seem to be able to recollect ever having met any of them.

Sometimes, however, I do find friends from other countries whom I remember. Last summer I was travell i n g o v e r se a s a n d me t a group of very nice Brazilians as well as a Polish family and we agreed to become friends.

My Facebook page is now cluttered up with messages and photos they e x c h a n g e wi t h a ll th e ir friends. The only problem is that

t h e y are either in Polish or Portuguese.

When I first linked onto the site I rather selfishly thought it was a fantastic means of advertising my recently published novel for free.

All I had to do was mention my book and the message would go to millions who would be rushing to the bookstores or Amazon.

It d o e s n o t e x ac tly w ork like that. Each person can only contact

his or her friends. And these friends first have to be invited to become friends and then agree to become friends.

I did a quick calculatlon. lf I could only become friends with 20 or 30 people, and this could take years, it would neither make me successful nor rich. I could not count on my friends telling their friends to tell their frlends about my book until the w hole w orld

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg conjured up an amazing new service for members who could log in wherever they were and tell their friends where they were. It is believed to attract over 500 million users but he stated that priva-

cy would be preserved. So what is the point?

In Spain I learnt the word ‘iluslon’ means both hope and illusion.

This applies particularly to how stock markets value internet companies.

Facebook doesn’t m ake any products, it doesn’t sell any, nobody pays to use it. Yet this is now a global organisation worth billions of dollars.

Are we living in another internet bubble or is it the dawning of a new corporate age where the social networking sites are the Big Brother George Orwell warned about?

What exact l y i s t he poi nt of Facebook and the other sites when it is as easy, if not easier, to communicate by email and attach photos too?

If anybody wants to be my friend, please give me a call or send an email. Does anyone still have a fax machine? A fixed telephone line? Morse code? Or how about posting a card or using carrier pigeons. Is there anyone out there?

Rules on tinting vehicle windows AS part of our series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

WINDOW TINTING: A manufacturer’s certificate is required.

WINDOW tinting is popular on cars, both as a form of privacy, and to keep out the heat, but there are rules that must be applied when getting vehicle windows tinted or laminated.

Tinted windows are created when dark sheets are glued to the original glass providing shade for the occupants, protecting from UV rays and creating a cooler climate within the vehicle. There are added benefits in that the window will have extra protection from shattering as the sheet often keeps the glass together.

When it comes to approval of the tinted windows during the mandatory vehicle inspection, the legal requirements are clear.

The vehicle must have a certificate from the manufacturer of the laminate which must be

completed by the installer. Another prerequisite is that all laminates are properly sealed on car windows.

However, the law changed recently which now means that tinted windows are no longer considered a major reform of the vehicle, so an extraordinary inspection is no longer required so long as all other requirements are met. It is always advisable to check with your local ITV station before having laminate tinting, just to be sure.

As for the law and enforcement, firstly, it is illegal to have the front windows tinted in any way and both the windscreen and side windows must remain clear as per the manufacturers’ specifications. This same rule applies to stick-on sunshades.

WHEN notorious timeshare bogeyman, Toni Muldoon, appeared before Ipswich Crown Court in 2013, he was handed down a seven year, five months sentence. His despicable crimes were committed mostly but not exclusively on the Costa del Sol. The trial, which had scores of witnesses, including 35 Trading Standards Officers, lasted 11 weeks. The court heard sordid details of how Muldoon and his cronies duped 17,300 innocent investors.

LIFE has been very hectic the past week. As the end of term approaches, the form filling increases!

My daughter will be graduating and going to the Institute next year so she is a bundle of excitement. I took her shopping yesterday to buy a dress for her special day. The transformation was remarkable. The girl became a woman before my very eyes.

Her brother also agreed that his ‘look’ left a lot be desired and we managed to get him into some smart but ‘fashionable’ clothes. He also has his football dinner and trophy presentation to attend so it’s all go in our household. Once school finishes things should calm down a little and we can enjoy a visit from family at the end of the month.

I am also hoping to get to the end of my treatment but machine two has not been behaving itself and has bro-

On one of the occasions that I managed to get my session in without a problem I also had to see the doctor to review how I was doing. Frankly this was a waste of time. All he did was ask me how I was and if I was tolerating the treatment.

It’s true to say that my skin is holding up very well and so far I have not experienced any burning, change in colour or discomfort. I just thought it was a little strange that he took my word for it and didn’t even examine me. I was in and out in three minutes!

I am about to dash off to the hospital now for what will hopefully be my 11th treatment. I am keeping everything crossed for a quick session and then back home. I am a little tired but the side-effects are negligible in comparison with my chemotherapy.

My toes, parts of my feet and fingers are still very numb after chemo.

On the bright side I have acquired two more eyelashes and the hair on my head is starting to grow quite well.

Not a fan of the white hairs though!

Such a shock to see how the stress of illness and bereavement have taken their toll.

Antibiotics not surgery for appendicitis ANTIBIOTICS have been found to be just as effective in treating appendicitis as removing the appendix.

It means that routine appendectomies, a common surgical procedure, could be a thing of the past.

The operation is carried out when the appendix becomes inflamed and infected. If untreated, it can be fatal. But now, doctors are calling for operations as a first course of treatment to be scrapped after a study found that antibiotics

worked just as well.

The results of the trial found the majority of patients who were treated with antibiotics did not require later surgery.

The study involved 530 patients with appendicitis being divided into two groups. Half received an appendectomy, with all but one recovering successfully.

The other half were given antibiotics for 10 days, after which 73 per cent recovered fully while the remaining 27 per cent then had their appendix removed.

WHEN looking at abuse suffered by pe ts it is be c oming more a nd more recognised that it is part of a bigger picture.

Research has shown that where animals are being maltreated it is also highly like ly tha t a bus e of huma n members of the family is also occurring.

“There is no doubt that there is a link between animal abuse and human abuse,” said Dr Rhonda Schulman, a veterinarian at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

“The statistics are frightening, but it is important that everyone, including veterinarians, recognise this serious problem because animal abuse in a home is very likely a sign of an even bigger problem within that family.”

Some estimates suggest that up to 90 per cent of animals living in a home where domestic abuse happens end up

“Abuse can also be self-propagating within a family,” said Dr Schulman.

“For instance, the mother or father abuses the child and then the child abuses the pet. This is sometimes the

only way that the child can assume any sense of personal power.”

Witnessing the abuse of a family pet can influence children to become abusive later in life, because they have learned the behaviour through observing and through identification with the abuser. Studies have also shown that children who torture animals are at higher risk than others to grow up to use violence against people.

Many adults who have committed serial murders or mass violence tortured animals as children.

“This means that if a child is exhibiting this sort of behaviour, it is extremely important to take it seriously and i nt er vene whi l e t her e i s st i l l a chance t o posi t i vel y i nf l uence t he chi l d’s devel opm ent ,” advi sed Dr Schulman.

ALTHOUGH the longest day of the year is past and evenings have already started to be a few minutes shorter each day gardens now face the 10 to 15 hottest and most challenging weeks of the year. So here are a dozen ideas for helping your garden survive the summer without major disasters.

1. Walk the garden each evening and water any plants that have a serious droop. Check in the morning that they have recovered their strength overnight.

2. If these plants are on a drip watering system turn up the pressure slightly or increase the watering time by five minutes a day.

3. Set up shade over delicate summer herbs and lettuces.

4. Remove non-essential leaves off tomato, pepper and aubergine plants to reduce their water needs. But do leave sufficient leaves to give shade to forming fruits.

5. Stop feeding plants so that they grow slower and demand less water.

6. Keep ponds topped up to provide for cooler water at the bottom of the pond and under water plants for the fish to rest out of the sun. Leave fountains on for longer if on a timer.

7. Only water in the later hours of the evening if possible so that the maximum of water soaks into the soil and minimum evaporates soon after watering.

8. If containers suffer unduly from the heat it is not too late to work some TerraCottem soil improvement gel into the compost around the circumference of the containers by making deep

11. Don’t be tempted to plant new plants before the autumn rains.

12. Recognise the fire risks and summer regulations.

Don’t light garden bonfires or use wood fires for barbecues. Use gas barbecues and paella cookers and solar cookers.

A look at the history of football in Spain

By Tony Matthews FOOTBALL is the most popular sport in Spain - that’s a fact!

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (Real Federación Española de Fútbol) is the national governing body and it organises La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the country’s national team, which won the European Championship twice (2008 and 2012) and the FIFA World Cup (in 2010).

Football as we know it today was introduced to Spain in the late 19th century by a combination of mostly British immigrant workers, visiting sailors and Spanish students who had travelled over from the UK. The oldest football club in Spain is Recreativo de Huelva which was formed on December 23, 1889 by Dr William Alexander Mackay and a group of British workers employed by the Rio Tinto Company.

Although records show that Gimnàstic de Tarragona was formed in 1886 and Sevilla FC four years later, these two clubs did not form an actual team until 1914 and 1905 respectively.

The first officially organised football match to be played in Spain took place in Sevilla on March 8, 1890, at the Tablada Hippodrome when the aforementioned Recreativo de Huelva played a mixed team of workers from the Sevilla Water Works.

With the exception of two Spaniards, both on the Huelva team, the other 20 players were all British-born, and consequently this is the main reason why Sevilla FC is so named and not Sevilla CF (‘club de fútbol’ in Spanish).

The selected Sevilla team won that firstever game by 2-0 in front of 1,000 or so interested spectators.

In the Basque Country during the early 1890s, a group of British shipyard workers and coalminers formed the Bilbao Football Club, and soon afterwards, in 1898, a number

This early British influence was reflected in the use of English names such as Recreation Club, Athletic Club and Football Club.

Real Madrid is the most successful Spanish and indeed European football club, in both the national League (La Liga) and continental competitions.

The ‘Whites’ have so far won 10 European Cups/Champions League titles, including the first finals: 1956-60 inclusive, and have finished runner’s-up on three occasions.

Real (Los Blancos/Los Merengues) have also won a record 32 Spanish League titles (La Liga), lifted the Copa Del Rey 19 times, the UEFA Cup twice, the Supercopa on nine occasions, the Copa Liga once, the Inter-continental Cup thrice and the World Club Cup also once (2014).

CF Barcelona are (to the majority) regarded as the second most successful club in Spain in terms of La Liga victories (just 22) although they have won the Copa Del Rey more times than their El Clasico rivals (26).

Barcá are also well down the pecking order when it comes to European triumphs, only four successes in the Champions League, plus four European Cup-winner’s Cup wins and three Inter Cities Fairs Cup victories.

In La Liga’s 83-year history (excluding the three seasons when the competition was suspended due to the Spanish Civil War), Real and Barcelona have won 54 titles between them.

Chasing the big two for prizes are Athletic Bilbao (31, including 23 La Liga wins), Atletico Madrid (20), Valencia (14), Sevilla (10, including one Europa League and two UEFA Cup final victories), Real Zaragoza (6) and Espanyol (4).

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi (although Argentinian) has scored more La Liga goals than any other player (258 and counting).

Slowly damning itself into extinction, the BBC is politically-biased and rapidly losing out to others with respect to quality, productivity and general coverage. Far superior drama and nature production is evident on other channels, news reporting is so dumbed down it’s meaningless and, frankly, it’s ‘Pointless’ discussing the licence fee when, reportedly, so many under-30s get their content on their tablets/laptops either free (iPlayer, YouTube, etc) or paid (Amazon, Netflix, etc). In 10 years, there’ll be hardly anyone left to fund it!

Like M&S and Tesco, the BBC, too, needs to start thinking long and hard about how it’ll survive in the 21st century...

The Modball rally is not so much a rally in the WRC sense, more like a modern-day reincarnation of the Burt Reynolds’ classic The Cannonball Run, but within the law.

Traffic laws THE LATEST traffic legislation for motorists and cyclists in Spain may be common knowledge for some, however, what with the roads filling up for the summer, a reminder of some key points of law are highlighted here.

1. Helmets mandatory in cities for cyclists under 16. Not doing so could lead to fines of €200.

2. Small children may not ride in the front seat.

Police will be able to stop and fine drivers carrying children under 1.35 metres in the front passenger seat, unless all the back seats are already taken up.

3. Fines for driving after taking drugs. The law eliminates the need to prove that drug use influenced a person’s driving.

Now, all it takes is a saliva test.

4. While the current speed limit on highways and freeways is 120km/h, the reforms contemplate raising this to 130km/h.
