A bumper year in store THE signs are positive that 2015 will surpass last year’s figures
By Maria José Fernandez ALL evidence indicates that this year’s tourism results in the Balearic Islands will be some of the most positive since the financial crisis began. The Hotel Industry Federation of Mallorca (FEHM) said the high tourism season of 2015 - which includes the months between May and October - will surpass all figures registered last year in terms of number of visitors, revenue and
overnight stays. They have also foreseen an increase in sales volume of up to 5 per cent in the main European markets, and up to 20 per cent in the Spanish tourism sector. The FEHM analysed data collected by the main tour operators in Germany, Britain and other countries in Central Europe (TUI, Thomas Cook, JET2, Der Tour, Schauisland and FTI). In addition, Spanish operators have been canvassed, and they predict growth which would
consolidate the positive trend registered during the past months. Palma airport has seen a 4.13 per cent increase in arrivals between January and April, 154,176 visitors more than last year, which has been accredited as the best ‘low season’ of the past 10 years. Port authorities have also announced that cruise-ship tourism is expected to break all records during the year, with an estimated number of 1,587,000 visitors, 18.8 per cent more than in 2014.
