Illegal homes vote CAMPAIGN groups join forces to put their case directly to senators By Eleanor Hawkins FOLLOWING a recent setback when the Spanish Senate’s Justice Commission vetoed proposals to adjust the law to protect owners of property with planning issues, associations are appealing directly to senators. AMA, an association of most-
ly Spanish home owners from Cantabria, has joined forces with British associations SOHA in Axarquia and AUAN in Almeria to appeal directly to senators to ignore the Justice Commission’s position and vote in favour of changing the Ley Hipotecaria (Mortgage Law). In an open letter to all the
members of the Senate pleading for their support, AMA president Antonio Vilela Fernandez has stressed the need for legislative change to protect those who purchased in good faith. The letter explains that the associations do not wish to waste anyone’s time, simply to achieve fairer laws to protect
citizens from abuse by promoters, constructors and in some cases even the authorities, and avoid destroying the lives of innocent families who see their homes destroyed. The Senate is due to vote on whether or not to change article 34 of the Ley Hipotecaria on Monday, May 25.
