New park for Salobreña A NEW park has been opened in Salobreña in the area of Avenida del Mediterraneo.

Works were possible thanks to a donation of timber made by the International Club of Salobreña, and gave employment to several young local residents.

All the fun of the fair PEOPLE from all over the Axarquia will be flocking to La Herradura for all the fun of the fair.

Dozens of activities have been organised by Almuñecar Council for La Herradura’s traditional fair in honour of its patron saint, San Jose, which will take place between March 18 and 22.

The inauguration will take place on March 18 at 1pm in Calle Eucalipto, where the council will provide a glass of wine.

After that, a ‘Gigantes y Cabezudos’ (Giants and Big-heads) parade will take to the streets at 3.45pm from the Civic Centre, accompanied by band Charanga Quinientos. Sports events will be held from 5pm until 7pm.

Two flamenco shows will take place in the Municipal Fair tent at the local fairgrounds at 8pm and at 8.30 in the Official Festivities tent.

Fireworks will illuminate the sky from 10pm, accompanied by music.

On March 19 at 12.30pm, a concert will be held in the San Jose Church square, featuring

Almuñecar’s Historical Music Band.

The Feria de Dia (daytime fair) will be held from 1pm in Calle Eucalipto, where participants will be able to enjoy live music performances.

At 5pm, in Playa del Carbon, there will be a

dressage exhibition and other horse-related activities.

The patron saint procession will take place at 8pm.

March 20 holds surprises for children, as there will be craft and facepainting workshops, story-telling, music and

dance activities at the Civic Centre.

At 4pm, the Local Police and other forces will parade with police dogs at the sports centre near the beach.

Exhibitions will be held from 5.30pm at different points in the town, such as La Herradura Castle, Playa del Carbon and the Official Festivities tent in the fairgrounds.

On Saturday 21 at 12pm, a bicycle ride organised by the Cycling Club of La Herradura will depart from Plaza de la Independencia.

Sunday 22 is known as ‘Children’s Day’, as the

younger ones benefit from discounts given on attractions.

A flamenco performance especially designed for senior citizens will be held at 10.30pm in the Official Festivities tent at the fairgrounds.

Festivities will end at midnight with the ‘traca final’ a fireworks finale as a closing ceremony for the traditional celebrations.

Saint Patrick’s Day in Motril MOTRIL’S Plaza de la Coronacion will turn into a sea of green on March 17 as St Patrick’s Day celebrations take off.

A typical Saint Patrick Day’s costume contest and a face-paint workshop will be held.

Irish bands Masque and Wild Cats will perform at the Plaza de la Coronacion from 5pm, continuing at Bar Gambrinus (Calle Narciso Gonzalez Cervera, in front of the Cerro de la Virgen) at 8pm. Visitors and locals will also be able to enjoy typical Celtic dance performances.

Controversy over G&T month MEMBERS of the PA Andalucian nationalist party of Almuñecar-La Herradura have raised complaints after the council announced March as ‘Gin Tonic month.’

The council launched the initiative in collaboration with an alcoholic beverage brand and members of PP claimed that the decision has “produced great concern amongst neighbours associa-

tions and those involved in the fight against alcohol and other drug addictions.”

“It is outrageous that a public administration such as Almuñecar Council would sponsor and promote alcohol consumption, a great social scourge that affects large groups of citizens,” they continued.

“The government is using public

money to promote alcohol consumption, sponsoring between March 1 and 28 the ‘Gin Tonic Month,’ even giving prizes to those who prove that they have completed a route around the participating establishments, with the consequent alcohol intake that it represents,” and they have requested for the immediate cancellation of the event.

PASSION OF CHRIST: Believed to be the oldest religious play in Europe.

Art exhibition ENGLISH painter Rowland Fade is hosting an exhibition at the bar El Convento in Plaza de la Victoria (Almuñecar). It can be visited from 7pm and features the artist’s collage pieces.

PEOPLE in Cervera in Lleida, Cataluña, take to the stage once a year at Lent to put on what is believed to be the oldest religious play in Europe.

The play, a six-hour-long stunning representation of the Passion of Christ, is believed to have started in 1481 as notes found in the regional archives detail payment for building a stage for the play in that year.

At the end of the 15th century it was a custom for religious representations of the story of Christ to be put on inside Cervera’s Santa Maria church, and notes have also been found from rehearsals for the play in 1534 when almost all the parts were played by priests.

The Council of Trent (1545-1563), one of the Roman Catholic Church’s most important ecumenical councils, banned all non-liturgy events from churches, forcing the traditional plays to move out-

THE Axarquia Region will receive more than €6.5 million from the Junta de Andalucia regional government to boost employment creation, labour integration and self-employment.

The news was announced on Monday, March 9, by delegate of the Junta, Jose Luis Ruiz Espejo and other government representatives, in a talk organised by the CADE (Centre for Business Development) of Velez-Malaga.

Worthy of mention are projects carried out in Velez-Malaga, which will receive €2.3 million.

“We will continue to boost employment measures to increase access opportunities, with focus on youths and citizens above 45 years old, who cannot be excluded from the system,” said Mr Ruiz.

It may simply be that spring is knocking on the door, and the days are getting longer, which gives us at the EWN a skip in our steps and the warm reassuring feeling that 2015 is going to be the turning point.

We suspect it may also have something to do with the fact that the housing market is showing promising signs of growth for the first time in 10 years. Or maybe that the unemployment figures are at the lowest they have been for the last three.

But everywhere you turn there seems evidence that subconsciously people can feel the wind of change, although they may be nervous to admit it so as not to bring a curse on it.

The golf courses have been manicured. The tennis courts have been painted, and the beaches are clean.

The hotels have made the beds, and the town hall steps have been scrubbed. Semana Santa (Easter Week) is on the doorstep, and the tourist season nearly upon us.

Whatever the reason for this elated spirit, it’s time to spring-clean! Out with the old and in with the new.

Start that new business, build that extension, buy that new bikini, and look forward to a bright new Spain.

What to do in Spain in the case of road traffic accidents

By Velasco Lawyers A RECENT survey made in different countries from a consortium of insurance companies came to the conclusion that on average 60 per cent of European car drivers do not know how to use the standard ‘European accident statement form’ (in Spanish ‘parte de declaración amistosa de accidentes’).

In Spain the relationship between the insured and the motor insurance companies is regulated by Royal Decree 8/2004 (law on civil responsibility and insurance in the usage of motor vehicles). Article 8 states that in order to speed up the compensation of the material damages by the insurers, the companies will have to provide the insured with European accident statement forms and the drivers will have to use them in case of accident.

Failure to fill in the form will greatly increase the length of the administrative procedures that from a few weeks can then last up to several months.

Physical injury If the accident involves physical injury, it is always recommended to call the emergency number 112 or alternatively the Policia National (telephone number 091) if the accident was in a urban area, or the Guardia Civil (telephone number 062) if the accident happened on a national road. The police or the Guardia Civil report will have priority over any other form.

If you don’t speak Spanish your insurance company can provide you with forms in English. Except for the language, the Spanish and English forms are strictly identical.

Once the form is filled in, each party should keep a copy and send it to their insurance company.

The important data In the ‘European accident statement form’ it is fundamental to fill in the details of the drivers and the insurance policy numbers.

If there are witnesses, get their details, as they will be called to testify in case of a dispute. It’s particularly important to take extra care in ticking

the right boxes in point number 12 and to make a clear drawing of the accident in point number 13 as the insurance companies will determine the party responsibility based on this information. Number 14, the space reserved for extra information, can be completed in English as well and will be used to complement information from points 12 and 13.

Unless there is disagreement between the two parties related to the information on the accident statement form, the document will have to be signed by the two parties. If no agreement can be reached, it is a good idea to call the Guardia Civil or the police, which will help to determine how the accident happened.

Thieves cut off Maro phones RESIDENTS of Maro (Nerja) saw their telephone service interrupted due to the attempted theft of the town’s telephone transformer.

The incident occurred at around 9.30pm on Sunday (March 8), and the companies responsible for the equipment alerted the Guardia Civil, explaining that it was the second time this had happened so far in 2015.

Keeping a safe driving distance

HOW much distance should be kept between the car in front? Drivers need to be prepared for the car in front of them to stop, slow down or perform any manoeuvre.

The condition of the road and the speed play a factor.

Under normal driving conditions, a common method is to use the three-second rule to determine an adequate following distance.

If the road is wet, icy, with bends or visibility is reduced, then the following distance needs to be increased allowing you and the car in front more room to stop.

At a speed of 30mph a vehicle needs 25 metres to stop safely. And at 68mph, that distance increases to 103 metres or the equivalent of a football pitch.

Safe driving distance even in traffic Even in built-up traffic it’s good driving to leave a space between you and the vehicle in front.

If the car in front breaks

down, you need enough space to mirror, signal and manoeuvre around it safely. If you get bumped from behind, leaving a gap may save your vehicle from colliding with the one in front.

Keeping right unless overtaking Vehicles should keep right on roads with two lanes or more, unless overtaking. In built-up areas, with two or more lanes, drivers should take the lane which best serves their destination.

This lane should not be changed unless overtaking, stopping, unloading or turning off. In all instances, drivers should not block or hinder the normal flow of traffic from behind.

Overtaking Overtaking is a potentially hazardous manoeuvre and must never be done on a bend, in limited visibility, on pedestrian crossings, on approaches to crossroads or intersections, or in tunnels. When overtaking a cyclist, drivers must

leave a minimum gap of 1.5 metres between their vehicle and the cyclist, at all times. Overtaking on the right-hand side is prohibited in Spain.

Negotiating roundabouts On approaching a roundabout, take notice of all the information available such as traffic signs, traffic lights and lane markings, which can direct you to the correct lane depending on your exit. As a general rule, it is usually safest to keep to the right lane until you need to exit the roundabout. Signal before the exit you intend to take and use your mirrors to ensure there is no one behind who will be inconvenienced by your turning off.

Giving dogs a home THE municipal pound of Motril gave shelter to a total of 903 animals in 2014, according to a report by the town council.

Out of those, 794 entered thanks to the rescue service, 78 were transferred to the shelter and 26 were born within the facilities.

In 2014, 633 pets were adopted and found a home thanks to different initiatives launched by local associations.

Mayor Luisa Garcia Chamorro, visited the facilities for an open house day and encouraged locals to continue adopting pets from the centre. Currently they have are more than 30 dogs, although they have also sheltered cats, chickens, snakes and horses.

PROMENADE: Structures to protect from future storms will also be put in place.

Government to fix damaged seafronts

THE Spanish Central Government will spend

a total of €847,000 to repair the damage caused by January storms on the Granada Coast.

Specifically, the money has been allocated to fix damage to Salobreña’s promenade, Velilla, Almuñecar, the beaches in La Rabita and Castell de Ferro.

The news was announced by a representative of the central government in Granada, who explained that the

budget was decided after an expert from the General Coast Department visited the areas affected by storms and strong winds.

Work is hoped to be finished in time for the Semana Santa (Easter) holidays.

In addition, structures to protect the area from future storms will be put in place at these particular beaches, although a budget has not been allocated yet.

Taking a hike FRIGILIANA Council has organised a hiking route to Cerro Torrecilla (Sierra de las Nieves) for Saturday March 14.

The trip will depart from Frigiliana by bus at 7am, and will drop off participants in Los Quejigales, which is at 1,282 metres altitude, where the hike will begin.

In total, 15 kilometres will be covered up to Cerro Torrecilla at 1,919 metres, the second highest peak in the natural park. The hike is

expected to last until 6pm.

Inscriptions are €20 and include the bus trip.

Fake papers GUARDIA CIVIL officers have arrested a man at Motril’s Port for attempting to get on a boat to Melilla in a vehicle with fake documents.

The man, a 41-year-old Moroccan residing in Charleroi (Belgium), was intercepted at the customs inspection of the Volcan de Tinamar boat, driving a car with temporary licence plates from Holland.

When the officers checked the vehicle documents they detected anomalies, so the car remained immobilised.

Dutch authorities confirmed to the Guardia Civil that the car was never registered in Holland and that they believed the documents to be false.

The man was taken into custody for a crime of forgery.

Dogs eat nail filled sausages DOG owners in Nerja have discovered sausages laced with nails in the garden area in front of Hotel Perla Marina (Calle Merida).

Round-head, large nails were found in food such as sausages or pâté.

A resident of this area, Luis M. Martinez, presented a formal complaint at the Local Police station after another neighbour claimed that her dog had eaten the dangerous sausages, which had forced the animal to vomit.

In addition, local Animal Clinic San Fernando has confirmed to online site Infonerja that professionals at the clinic had to provide assistance to other dogs for the same reasons.

8 arrested in drugs crime EIGHT people have been arrested by National Police in Velez-Malaga for allegedly trafficking cocaine and two drugs sales points shut down.

Two of the detainees were minors and are believed to have also taken part in a crime of participation in a criminal gang.

Six of the eight detainees have been remanded to prison, three women and three men.

Andalucia’s school application process THE process to register young children for school in Andalucia has started, causing confusion for first-time parents.

Dates, documents and criteria used to value applications can confuse natives, let alone those from abroad whose grasp of the language may not be fluent.

The final date to present applications is March 31 for Infant (3 to 5-year-olds), Primary, Special Education and Secondary schools, and the application period for nursery schools for 0 to 3-year-olds begins the following day and ends on April 30.

Application forms can be downloaded from

www.juntadeandalucia. es/educacion or requested at any school free of charge. The filled-in form must be presented at the school preferred before March 31 along with any documentation required as proof of address, parents’ place of work, special needs and family identification.

Schools will publish a list of applicants and the points awarded (depending on family situations) before April 16.

After the points are published, an appeals period is given for possible mistakes or issues.

For cases where points are tied, a public draw is held at the Education Board offices in Sevilla to decide which

applicants are admitted to their preferred centre.

The final list of accepted students is published by each school on May 19, then on May 26 further lists are issued announcing which school children not accepted by their first choice must go to.

Infant, Primary and Special Education students must present enrolment forms (provided by the school) between June 1-8, and Secondary students between July 1-10.

Meanwhile, nursery school applications are to be presented in April, and provisional lists of those accepted will be published between May 2 and 7.

Making sense of inheritance laws With Lex Uiris Lawyers

LAST September, the European Court of Justice decided it was illegal to treat resident and non-resident EU citizens differently for inheritance tax purposes.

The court declared that ‘the Kingdom of Spain has failed to fulfil its obligations under Articles 63 TFEU and 40 of the Agreement on the European Economic Area of 2 May 1992.’

The court argued that to apply local regulations to a non-resident was not justified because ‘there is no difference between the objective situation of a resident and a non-resident that can support a difference in treatment.’

The problem is that inside Spain there are different tax law regulations for inheritance in the different autonomous communities (Andalucía, Balearics, Cataluña, Madrid, etc).

This raises the issue of which law would apply when a non-resident has more than one property or rights in

Mojacar singer shines through MOJACAR fans watching The Voice on BBC1 were thrilled to see 26year-old Sheena McHugh from Coalville in Leicestershire go through to the next round in the singing competition.

Euro Weekly News readers will remember that Sheena was chosen by Spectrum FM to sing their Mojacar song to promote the Costa Almeria.

Sheena was paired with Holly Barry for their stage battle, and Will.i.am chose Aretha Franklin’s Sisters are doin’ it for themselves for the two girls to sing.

Sheena was concerned about the song choice. Speaking to Will.i.am, Sheena’s mentor for the competition, ahead of the battle, she said: “It takes away the good parts of my voice.”

Will.i.am responded harshly: “Sink or swim. It’s a battle. You’re not supposed to be comfortable in a battle” But when the two girls took to the stage, Sheena forgot her misgivings and belted out the classic soul number with gusto and passion.

Department store has to tell THE taxman is on the tail of big spenders at El Corte Ingles.

In 2008 the National Office of Fraud Investigation (Onif) attached to the tax authority, Hacienda, requested details of clients who racked up €30,000 a year or more on El Corte Ingles cards.

The department store was given a month to supply the names and addresses of these customers as well as their card numbers and bank details. Failing to comply would be considered an offence, Onif warned.

The department store objected and appealed to the High Court, which in 2012 sided with Hacienda.

El Corte Ingles again appealed, this time to the Supreme Court which has once more taken the tax authority’s part.

The Supreme Court took the same line that it applied to 4B credit cards by ruling that a duty exists to provide information and collaboration whenever required by Hacienda.

There have been at least 10 similar rulings in recent years, obliging banks and credit card companies to supply information even when users are not under investigation. This has included itemised records of users’ spending and not merely a final balance figure.

Copywriting and translations PROFESSIONAL writing services are not something many make use of despite their importance to business.

Proven, a single spelling mistake on a website’s home page will reduce sales by 50 per cent. It suggests professional sloppiness and possible fraud.

Although there is a pressing need for both translators and copywriters in Mediterranean Spain, there is little demand for either of these services. I may be wrong but I put this down to businesses here being more laid back than their northern European counterparts. There is perhaps a shortage of hard-nosed business professionals.

Copywriting is a creative trade in which there is a need for word empathy. The copywriter takes uninspiring content and ‘sexes it up’; you sell the steak, the copywriter sells the sizzle.

Fees charged for either services can be modest or challenging. Like much else in life you get what you pay for.

Many translators are doing it ‘on the side’. They have only their time to consider. These translators are inappropriate for such as legal and official docu-

ments that require a notary’s stamp.

The copywriter is rarely paid his true worth. He or she takes your product on its blank sheet of paper and creatively spins a web of enticement to attract interest and buyers. Their fees are often high.

So they should be. You see an advert; he sees many hours of inspired concentration. Their job is to create masterpieces out of a basic sales pitch.

The true business professional does not count the cost of the investment as he expects returns to be far higher.

A good copywriter can quadruple sales.

You cannot put a price on that.

Just today at the Health Centre I noticed that the receptionists that take the appointments always have long sour faces on them. Granted, their jobs are detailed and somewhat tedious at times, but being gloomy while working isn’t helping matters! I am not asking that they jump around and sing like they are in a Broadway musical, but cracking a smile now and then wouldn’t hurt.

NCE again I was interested to see the new series of politician ‘rappers’ put out by Sky News this week.

These heavily manipulated adverts, somewhat irreverently, portray our esteemed leaders as twitching entertainers informing us they are bringing down the deficit and so on.

To my mind, by presenting these highly technical images, the media moguls have actually shown us all just how much they can in fact meddle with any of the information they gather before delivering it to their unsuspecting viewers. It’s all very well to make their technically tweaked

Witness for the defence I KNOW that Leapy Lee can defend himself perfectly well; after all, he has his column to do so.

However, I think Bill Campbell has missed the point. Mr Campbell, please let me ask you this one question: “Did you ever, if only once, hear a Muslim singing “Allah save our gracious Queen” with their eyes closed and their hands on their hearts?

I suspect not. Until that day comes, Mr Campbell, I am with Leapy 100 per cent and I think you should be too.

Newspeak peril BILL CAMPBELL’S attack on Leapy Lee contained the usual one-liners used by the liberal left to shut down any discussion with people of opposing views.

I am referring to “the world has changed” or “you’re stereotyping.” Add “you’re a dinosaur” or “this is the 21st century” (as if you were 100 years out of date) and one has the full set.

These phrases are a common trick used by pseudo-intellectuals who feel their use is an argument in itself to denounce any opposition. They despise anyone with (non-political) conservative attitudes, as they are so absolutely certain of their standpoint.

Campbell says that the restrictions in Saudi “embarrass most Muslims.” Really!

I presume he speaks for those in Syria, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Somalia, Yemen and Libya where I believe the nightlife is a riot!

Similarly he believes only a tiny minority of Muslims are involved in recent atrocities. Who says so? The BBC or the Guardian? A recent poll showed almost 30 per cent had sympathy with events in Paris and who knows what is said in private?

As someone who was born and lived in Blackburn for the first 33 years of my life I know a thing or two about “multiculturalism.” The communities do not overlap, they don’t even touch and the town, like many others in the North of England, is in terminal decline.

Finally, he acts as an apologist for what he euphemistically terms “extreme behaviour” (straight from Orwell’s ‘1984’ newspeak).

This sounds like what some said at the very start of the Second World War: “We shouldn’t bomb Germany or they’ll retaliate.” We all know where that one ended.

Put to good use DOES anybody know of a charity or organisation that collects electronic components and printed circuit boards for recycling? I have a goodly number to dispose of and would rather see them used for a good purpose than leave them by a bin for the scavengers to take.

Stem the tide READING Mike Walsh’s latest dredgings from the depths of his paranoia, I am reminded of the folk who kept telling us in the 1930s that Mr Hitler was really a nice guy who would not do any harm provided we gave him what he wanted.

They went on saying that, even after Hitler had invaded Czechoslovakia and even after he invaded Poland.

LIKE a previous correspondent I don’t recognise those acid yellow flowers with trefoil leaves, but I can tell that this busy bee was investigating freesias.

D Compton (by email) Interestingly, Mike seems to believe that absurd bit of propaganda, as he last week assured us that Poland’s army was bigger than Germany’s in 1939. I suppose it may have been bigger numerically but that meant nothing in terms of effectiveness.

Now he constantly claims that the crisis in Ukraine is all the West’s fault and the West has ruined that country. He completely ignores the fact that Russia has done its share of destruction, by invading the country and organising the secession of the Crimea.

If Putin did not want to damage Ukraine, why did he annex the Crimea? It is, I am afraid, blindingly obvious that Putin has a long-term plan to reassert Russian domination at least over what used to be the USSR and probably over the former satellite states of Eastern Europe.

He will not be stopped by giving him everything he asks for at each stage of the process. Mike would do better to support NATO and the EU’s moves to beef up its military presence and hit Russia eco-

nomically. The countries which Mike says are suffering because of the sanctions have made it clear that they would rather suffer that than be left at Putin’s mercy.

Word perfect IN a week when Russia’s last Opposition politician has been murdered, it is an embarrassment to the Euro Weekly News that Mike Walsh sets himself up as a mouthpiece for the Putin regime.

For renewal you simply have to phone the number you gave and select option #2. After being referred to an operator and answering a few questions, giving full name, date of birth, etc, the card will be renewed there and then and forwarded to you by post.

Transfers and Related Bridge Terms THIS article is intended to give precise definitions of four closely related bridge terms that are frequently misused: transfer, relay, puppet and marionette.

Transfer: (1) a bid that shows length in a different suit; or (2) a call that asks partner to make a certain call regardless of his holding.

Note that the referenced suit is not necessarily the suit above. For that reason, when a transfer bid is alerted and an explanation sought, the answer must specify the referenced suit and not merely be the word ‘transfer’.

Example: 1NT-2♦ and 1NT-2♥ are common transfers to the suit above.

Some partnerships employ four-suit transfers where the referenced suit is two steps above: 1NT-2♠ shows clubs; 1NT-2NT shows diamonds.

Relay: an artificial call, very often the cheapest bid, possibly

non-descriptive or at most partially descriptive, that asks or allows partner to offer a description.

The usual purpose of a relay is to allow partner to clarify his hand at a conveniently low level. Note that a relay does not have to be the cheapest bid.

Example: 1NT-2♣. A Stayman response that guarantees a four-card major is a partially descriptive relay.

It is possible to play this 2♣ bid as non-promissory Stayman where it does not promise a four-card major.

2♣ then becomes a non-descriptive relay.

Example: 2♣-2♦.Some partnerships require responder to make an automatic 2♦ response to a gameforcing 2♣ opening that says nothing about clubs. In this case, 2♣ is a puppet to 2♦.

There is a convention called Puppet Stayman, used when an opening 1NT or 2NT bid may contain a fivecard major, but the name is a misnomer as no puppet bid is involved.

Readers who use this convention may be interested to know that there is a significantly superior variation called Muppet Stayman, which ensures that the strong NT hand is declarer in all major suit contracts.

Puppet: a call that asks partner to make a certain call regardless of his holding.

A transfer with meaning (2) above is properly called a puppet. If a partnership were to agree that opener would never break a 1NT-2♦ or 1NT-2♥ transfer, then 2♦ and 2♥ respectively are called puppet bids.

Marionette: a transfer (meaning 2), after which partner will usually make the cheapest bid but is permitted to bid higher with special hands.

HE nerdy, would-be world statesman Ed Miliband announced to great acclaim last week, that when the Labour Party forms the next government, it will reduce university tuition fees from nine to six thousand pounds.

Now that’s what I call radical thinking; I almost fainted with uncontrolled admiration.

But before Labour supporters start to reach for their telephones, let me say this is not a diatribe directed at Labour politicians - I am equally repelled by the lot of them, of whatever political persuasion.

No, it’s this mind-set that our politicians seem to have and their ridiculous dream and target of sending every school leaver in the land to university that I don’t get.

University was once the mark of excellence. A place where those above average abilities could hone their natural talent and academic abilities to the

highest level. Because the truth is, we are not all equal.

That’s not to say that the less academic amongst us are inferior. Quite the opposite. Many of my ex-school pals trained under the apprenticeship scheme and went on to become skilled mechanics or technicians. Others had careers as diverse as nursing, sales and construction occupations that were suited to their own particular fields of interest and aptitude, and did not require the university experience to achieve.

One pupil from my secondary modern school, who plodded through the lowest academic stream for four years, used his talent of gardening to good effect and now owns two large garden centres in Hampshire.

Anything less than a university education we are led to believe, will condemn your kid to a life sitting outside a tube station with a lurcher and holding out an empty cocoa tin for loose change.

If you believe that Robinson Crusoe mapped New Zealand, then yes, this is a possibility.

But what does it tell us about those who study economics or political science at university and then without proper jobs or real experience of the world, go directly into the business of politics?

Cliffgate: is the thin blue line getting thinner and thinner?

AVE you been assaulted in South Yorkshire recently? Did eight police officers in five cars come to your home to conduct their enquiries? Did they hang around for five hours conducting those enquiries? Oh, and did they arrange for a BBC crew in a helicopter to record everything and broadcast it live to the nation?

No? Thought not. That’s because you’re not famous and the alleged offence didn’t occur 30 years ago. If it happened to you yesterday, too bad! South Yorkshire police seem much more interested in the highprofile ‘historical’ stuff.

This follows news that Sir Cliff Richard faces at least one more allegation of sexual abuse after police reports that their investi-

gation has “increased significantly in size.”

As for Sir Cliff, he’s said the claims against him are “absurd and untrue” and he has “never, in my life, assaulted anyone.”

The police have so far behaved with a staggering lack of judgement, and it’s hard to avoid the conclusion they’re now attempting to deflect public scrutiny away from the Rotherham child grooming scandal. It’s high profile and doesn’t threaten them - unlike Rotherham which is right on their patch and ongoing.

The police usually leave the well-known accused in such cases in limbo for ages while they do little or nothing. That’s what’s happened several times in cases that have eventually been dropped.

Take, for instance, the broadcaster, Paul Gambaccini, whose bail was extended seven times over a whole year. They owe it to Sir Cliff to investigate speedily and resolve this - one way or the other. It’s the least they can do.

So, another nail in the failing reputation of the UK’s justice system and public trust in the police? Whatever your view, this case undeniably illustrates, yet again, the

unfairness of naming the accused and ridiculously long police investigations.

It’s really hard to find safe ground on the naming issue.

However, police and prosecutors rationalise that the surrounding publicity allows others who may have been wronged by the alleged offender to come forward: a fishing trip, in other words. Cases such as Sir Cliff’s are flawed and dangerous to the innocent party but, without anonymity, the current situation leads inevitably to a publicly declared presumption of guilt of the accused.

Anonymity for both parties is the only answer.

Gender wage gap widens in Spain The gender pay gap in Spain is widening with women earning an average of 19.3 per cent less than men, compared to a 16.1 per cent difference in 2008. What is your opinion on the matter?

4th March I SIGNED off my last blog feeling more than a little under the weather. I have likened my chemotherapy to an assault course in the past and until recently I had been metaphorically jumping over walls and racing along at a great pace.

Last week I seemed to get a little stuck in the cargo netting! Not to worry as nothing lasts forever.

Finally my body seemed to kick into action and my defence system rallied and my fever dissipated.

My dear friend Pepi called me to see if I was up to having a visitor. It was just what I needed so she came over. It was a beautiful sunny day and just sitting having tea and chatting with Pepi made me feel so happy.

The small things take on greater importance when life changing events happen so now I appreciate every little happy moment.

a ‘friendly’ match. Wonderful Spanish music accompanied by a healthy portion of paella was just what the doctor ordered.

We spent the afternoon there and then a quick icecream on the way home.

I was starting to feel tired so went to bed and fell asleep.

Sunday dawned and I really felt so much better. I decided as it was another lovely sunny day that I would flash up the BBQ. Jorge was coming over and wasn’t expecting a BBQ so that would be a nice surprise.

He had just finished training in the gym and sent me a message to say he was on his way, extremely happy at the prospect of chorizo, chicken wings, burgers, pinchitos and the like!

He wasn’t the only one… we all love a BBQ! I always like to mention

the special people in my life.

I have to thank Jorge so much for all his support and love.

He really does understand what I am going through because he is also a cancer survivor. I draw great

I do feel like there is light at the end of the tunnel, but still have a further two treatments to go and

I strongly believe in remembering the good times, enjoying the here and now and looking forward to the future.

Any other philosophy just wouldn’t be helpful. Lamenting your ill fortune or asking why me is frankly a waste of time and energy.

It sounds so simple, but honestly thinking positive thoughts really does bear fruit.

My plan for this week is to hug my children lots! And to tick off a few things on my ‘list to do’! I will above all rest, eat well and keep my fingers crossed that I will be in shape for my next treatment.

Their study offered a group of office workers a range of snacks while they watched the Ryan O’Neal and Ali MacGraw film ‘Love Story’ and lighter, funny film ‘Sweet Home Alabama.’ Their study found that those watching ‘Love Story’ had eaten up to 36 per cent more popcorn. When a group watched George Clooney’s ‘Solaris,’ they ate 55 per cent more popcorn than those who enjoyed humorous film ‘My Big Fat Greek Weeding.’

Scientists say that a high-salt diet causes sodium levels to build up in the skin, and that may boost the immune system and help fight off germs that cause bacterial skin infections. In an experiment, German researchers discovered that mice which were fed a high-salt diet healed infections in their feet more quickly.

Professor Jonathan Jantsch, of the University of Regensburg, said: “Up to now, salt has been regarded as a detrimental dietary factor; it is clearly known to be detrimental for cardiovascular diseases, and recent studies have implicated a role in wors-

Murder in the Forest

Heroic wildlife Conservationist Lone Drøscher Nielsen comes to Fuengirola, and talks exclusively to the Euro Weekly News’ Steve Walsh about the critical situation threatening the extinction of our closest cousins; the Orangutan.

C

AN you imagine the scene?

You’re looking into the sorrowful eyes of a helpless mother that has been savagely beaten and hacked to death with machetes while listening to the screams of her child being torn from her arms.

It’s a horrible picture isn’t it? One you would expect to see in a horror film maybe?

Well no, it happens all the time, almost every day in Borneo.

These atrocities and others like them are what Drøscher Nielsen and the BOSF have to live with, and fight against on a daily basis.

Since 1993, Lone and her organisation the ‘Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation’ have fought a continuing struggle to save the orphans and reintroduce them into the wild. This has been a long and almost impossible task which at one stage almost killed her. But now, things are worse! Much worse!

When in 1991 the Danish born air stewardess visited a small Orangutan project in Borneo, she instantly fell in love with the forest and the Orangutan, that’s when she decided to stay. Today, through pure determination, personal sacrifice, and love for our nearest cousins, she is the founder of the largest primate rescue centre in the world.

With nearly 600 youngsters to look after, palm oil giants and a reticent government to battle, you would think that staring death in the face two years ago would have made her think twice. But no! She’s back for ‘Round 2,’ but this time the situation is desperate, and she needs help.

These sweet soulful potbellied characters, who share 97 per cent of our DNA, are known to be the most sedate and friendly of the apes. They are one of our closest relatives, and are born with the ability to reason and think. The ‘People of the forest’ (direct translation of Orangutan) have the intelligence and ability to fashion rudimentary tools to help them forage for food. The length of time a child spends under the care of its mother is one of the longest in the mammal world, anywhere from six to 14 years in fact.

This is one of the problems the BOSF have to deal with.

From the day a baby is rescued, it embarks on a daily training programme that will last at least six or eight years before it can be released to fend for itself.

We say ‘one’ of the problems

Born with the ability to reason and think because there are others, and far more serious!

These come primarily from the previous government’s ‘underhanded’ policies on palm oil plantations and logging contracts. Where large swathes of natural forest are being sold to, and levelled by the new emerging palm oil producers and loggers. It has been calculated that: “Due to the increase in palm oil plantation growth, and illegal logging, coupled with the Indonesian pledge that palm oil production will increase from 20 million tonnes to 40 million tonnes; by the year 2022 there will be NO low level forestation to sustain wildlife.”

The Orangutan are arboreal creatures, they can’t live without trees. They nest high up in the branches safe from the forest floor. They drink water collected in the high leaves, and in the dry season they suck them like a sponge. When it rains (and man can it rain!) they use large leaves to protect themselves. It’s a fact that without the trees they will become extinct, and with the equivalent area of 300 football pitches being cleared every day… That won’t be long!

Couple that with the problem of hunters and poachers that slaughter mothers so as to steal and sell the babies as pets or prostitutes, you start to see the scale of the task Lone and the BOSF have on their hands.

But time has run out, the situation has become desperate.

In 2012 the government granted a slice of forest to the programme for the release of rehabilitated Orangutan. Since then some 136 orphans and survivors have been successfully returned to their trees. But it was expensive! Transport costs, permits, and the 189 staff are just a part of the huge bill the BOSF have to pay. At this moment the centre (which was designed to house 100

Lone’s message is clear. “It’s quite simple, if the treated cannot be returned to the wild, we cannot take any more orphaned babies in, hundreds may die.

The suffering of these apes and the destruction of their home isn’t a natural disaster. The imminent extinction of this species isn’t an act of nature. We caused it! We are the ones that want cheap vegetable oil; therefore it’s our responsibility not to let them be wiped out.”

A

S the weather warms up it is time for thoughtful gardeners to stock up on ecological fertilizers, insecticides and fungicides that are safer to use than many chemical products for the family pets and neighbours.

Compared to 20 years ago there are now many products available to gardeners, most having been initially developed to support the growing of vegetables and fruit for export, but unfortunately recent emails from readers and my own research indicate that not all garden centres, horticultural shops and agricultural cooperative shops stock them.

However some alternatives can be made by yourself and some of the most important companies allow their products to be purchased via the internet as outlines below.

Some useful home made products Nettle fertilizer - If you see any nettles growing in your garden or in the nearby lanes and countryside, cut them and steep them in water for a couple of weeks and then strain off the leaves and use the liquid to give plants a spring feed to strengthen them after the winter, including overwintered vegetables and fruit trees.

Comfrey leaf fertilizer and compost accelerator - Fill a bucket or dustbin with leaves and then cover with water for three weeks before diluting with water and using to feed vegetables. Compost heap compost - With luck last year’s compost heap is now ready for mixing into soils and tree planting holes being prepared for plantings and also for use as a mulch around shrubs.

Garlic insecticide Mash a head of garlic and pour hot water over it and then leave it for a couple of days while the insecticide ingredients are leached out. Then strain and use, neat or diluted in water, to spray any insect attacks and as a preventive against the geranium moth.

Thyme insecticide Not as strong as a garlic spray but useful. Hang up bunches of leaves on the kitchen door to deter flying insects from entering.

IF you give your dog a command, even a simple one like SIT then the reward of ‘good dog’ is given as the dog’s bottom hits the ground. Just a verbal praise given in a light happy voice can be enough for most dogs.

Sometimes people will use food or a motivator for

this reward system. I believe if you have used treats for a couple of months a dog will now be content with the bright happy voice which should be sufficient for such a simple command.

As your commands become more difficult for the dog to achieve you can always up the reward, especially if you are doing scent work.

A motivator the dog really loves can now be used such as that special ball or toy. Most professional working dogs are rewarded in this manner as soon as they have found something.

WELL DONE: Verbal praise for most dogs is usually enough.

Whatever you use, you only have a split second to give it on completion of an exercise. I use my voice and a quick touch under the chin as my rewards.

Think about the dolphin which performs in a show.

He is being taught to jump out of the water. If he jumps about two metres, he gets a small whistle to call him back, and when he returns to the edge of the pool, he gets a small fish.

As his training increases, and he jumps about six metres or more out of the pool, he gets a huge instant whistle while he’s at the top of the jump, which brings him swiftly back to the pool edge where he gets a bucket of fish as his reward. Timing of any reward is important. (If your timing is out, you may be rewarding for the wrong action.) The reward is always there for him immediately and he will give his best every time.

Affordable luxury property prices attract super-rich to Spain MADRID and Barcelona may not be Monaco, but they’re attracting an increasing amount of super-rich property owners.

A study by multinational consultancy firm Knight Frank has found that between them the two Spanish cities boast 982 great fortunes, 14 more than last year.

The Wealth Report stated that the number of ultra-high net worth individuals increased by 3 per cent in 2014 across the world, and by 2 per cent in Spain.

Internationally the 190 SL set standards for a culture of comfortable travel with style and sporty elegance. Together with its ‘elder sibling,’ the 300 SL, it paved the way for the successful Mercedes-Benz SL tradition - culminating in the current R 231.

Today the W 121 is a classic car that fetches exceptionally good prices.

Experts in the industry and the general public alike had been dreaming of this car since the appearance of a prototype version at the International Motor Sports Show in New York in February 1954. The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL then appeared in its finished form in March 1955 at the 25th International Motor Show in Geneva where it met with a resounding response.

German weekly newspaper ‘Die Zeit,’ for example, raved about the “Mercedes-Benz 190 SL with its irresistibly beautiful lines.”

The 190 SL, which went into main production in May 1955, was an opentop, two-seater car for comfortable and stylish travel. Karl Wilfert and Walter Häcker designed its body with sporty lines and in a style reminiscent of the 300 SL ‘Gullwing’ (W 198) super sports car.

Whereas the Gullwing Coupé was based on a complex space frame, the 190 SL Cabriolet had the shortened floor assembly of the 180 Saloon model (W 120) with self-supporting chassis-body structure.

The 190 SL was powered by the newly developed M 121, a 77 kW (105 hp) 1.9-litre four-

cylinder engine with an overhead camshaft.

The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL stood for the feeling of being alive in the ‘Swinging Fifties,’ for a colourful joie de vivre and lightness - as also shown by the car’s appearances in light-hearted German films of the time such as ‘Die Zwillinge vom Zillertal’ (The Zillertal Twins, 1957) and ‘Solange noch die Rosen blühn’ (As Long As The Roses Are In Bloom, 1956).

The 190 SL primarily became the dream car of the 1950s against the economic backdrop of the starting recovery: never before had so many people had the opportunity to realise the dream of having their own car.

In this sense, the 190 SL

dream car came at just the right time. The Stuttgart brand’s open-top two-seater set new standards for comfortable travel with a sporty note by delivering a refreshingly new take on the ‘Gran Turismo.’ So 60 years ago, the W 121 also laid the foundations for the tradition of the Mercedes-Benz SL model series as sporty, open-top, two-seater touring cars that combined the highest standards of refinement with good everyday practicality - right up to the current SL-Class model series R 231.

windowless aluminium doors, a smaller windscreen and other modifications. The bumpers and soft top could be removed for races. Notable successes include the class victory achieved by Douglas Steane at the 1956 Macau Grand Prix.
