The Balearics unite to say: ‘Je suis Charlie’ A LARGE crowd gathered in Palma to show their condemnation of the terrorist attacks in Paris that left 17 innocent people dead. More than 400 people took to the streets in Palma - and 200 more in Ibiza - on Sunday (January 11) to show their support for the victims of the armed attack on the Paris-based satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. Twelve people died in the attack, as well as a police officer, and a
further four were killed in the hostage situation at a Jewish supermarket. Organised by French citizens living in Mallorca, the event in Palma attracted people from different nationalities who wore black and
white and carried signs reading ‘Je suis Charlie’ (I am Charlie). They sang the French National Anthem in tribute Honorary Consul of France on the Balearic Islands, Michiel Magnier, expressed his heartfelt
thanks to the people of Mallorca and called for permanent and peaceful coexistence amongst all creeds and ideologies. In another solemn event, Palma Mayor Mateo Isern, President of the Balearic Government Jose Ramon Bauza, and other government officials took part in a minute’s silence at the Government’s Delegate Office on Thursday (January 8) at noon, to commemorate the victims of the terrorist attacks.
