Xmas comes to town A LARGE crowd is expected tomorrow, Friday November 28, at 7pm in Plaza de Cort in Palma for the Christmas lights switch-on, which will officially kick off the festivities.

Palma City Hall will be decorated with a nativity scene by Associacio de Betlemistes de Mallorca, with more than 150 hand-painted clay figures made by Margalida Nicolau. Everyone can visit the scene from Friday until January 6, from 9am until 9pm Monday to Saturday, and from 10am until 8pm on Sundays and holidays.

The nativity scene depicts some of the most emblematic places and streets of the city.

€10 million venue for party capital MAGALUF, the party capital of Spain, is set to receive a €10 million investment.

Fergus Hotels and Intriga Entertainment Group announced on Tuesday (November 25) the launch of a joint project to build an innovative entertainment complex in the town for the summer of 2016.

The new day and nightlife experience will be launched at the Fergus Magaluf Resort as part of a full reform of the Pax and Barracuda hotels.

The ambitious project will create a large entertainment space within the hotels (3,500 square metres), with a day club in one of the three pools and a multi-floor night club. The venues will provide people with an unforgettable experience thanks to state-of-the-art sound and lighting

MAJOR INVESTMENT: High-tech new venues. technology, made possible by an overall €3 million investment.

The redevelopment of the hotels will take place in stages. Operations will start in both hotels to create the Magaluf Resort,

ready for opening in 2015.

During the 2015-2016 winter, all the rooms will be upgraded and the category will increase to four stars, followed by the grand opening of the day and night clubs in 2016.

Toy donations for Christmas A MALLORCAN businessman is helping to ensure that underprivileged children on the island have a happy Christmas this year.

Ian Johnston, of yacht supply company Bosuns Locker, has kindly donated his fleet of vans to assist in the collection of Christmas toys and donations for a local radio station’s Christmas toy appeal. And he says

the response so far has been overwhelming.

“There are a lot of wealthy people on the island of Mallorca but there is a lot of poverty too,” said Ian, who added: “We’re just asking people to put their hands in their pockets or donate new and second-hand toys so that kids who otherwise wouldn’t can have a happy Christmas this year.”

Ian has freed up his four vans and his time to make daily collections from the ports and marinas of Southwest Mallorca and deliver donations, thus aiding in the appeal to make a child’s Christmas.

Knifepoint burglars THREE hooded burglars broke into a home in Son Talent, Manacor, and held up its occupants at knifepoint before escaping with money and jewellery. The National Police are currently looking into the incident.

Family fight A MOROCCAN national has been detained in Son Gotleu for reportedly stabbing his brother over a mobile phone.

The victim was found by police lying on the ground bleeding profusely and taken to Son Llatzer Hospital.

Fire declared A FIRE in Port Adriano in the early hours of Tuesday, November 25, damaged two flats in a building located on the Magaluf-Santa Ponça motorway. Nobody was injured in the fire.

Domestic violence THE Balearic Islands saw the largest number of complaints lodged for domestic violence in the second quarter of the year compared to the rest of the country (4,327).

THE Red Cross estimates that there are approximately 1,000 people living on the streets of Mallorca.

Approximately 350 of them live on the streets on a permanent basis, while the rest have been temporarily pushed into homelessness by economic problems.

Helping out FIGURES from a survey conducted by Gadeso show that 59 per cent of people older than 65 with average financial resources have had to help their children during the recession with cash handouts.

TREET artist known as the ‘Spanish Banksy’ has been wowing the art world with his unique and contemporary works which have been appearing on buildings and walls around the world.

Pejac, who blends visual metaphors with just a hint of irony, has been gathering much attention thanks to his incredible drawings that are Banksylike in style, yet retain their own identity.

The Santander-born street artist uses abandoned buildings, footpaths and building facades to highlight his view of the world. While British street artist Banksy became famous for his graffiti which often borders on the political, Pejac’s streetscapes have been described as more ‘poetic,’ and his work has

Countdown to the season begins T

HIS weekend will see the majority of towns and cities across Spain adopt a more festive look with the annual switch-on of the Christmas lights for the build-up to the holidays.

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is only four short weeks away as once again it seems to be sneaking up on us out of nowhere.

It only seems like yesterday when we were all still enjoying the sunshine and beaches, and now we can look forward to Christmas fairs, office Christmas parties and braving the shopping crowds in the search of gifts - not to mention the mulled wine, turkey and mince pies.

Many expats head home to their own countries for the Christmas season, but there is still a huge amount of us who stay here and enjoy all that Spain has to offer for

the holidays. It might not be as cold and it might be a bit strange to see bars and restaurants open on Christmas Day, but the season here in Spain is every bit as enjoyable as it is back home.

We’re getting into the Christmas spirit here at EWN, and are looking forward to the build-up to our favourite time of year.

Happy Thanksgiving Finally, we’d like to send out a Happy Thanksgiving to all our American friends in Spain who will be enjoying their turkey and pumpkin pie this Thursday.

Workers plunge 3 metres TWO workers were badly hurt after plunging three metres while installing solar panels on the roof of a Felanitx business.

The two men were admitted to Manacor Hospital, where one was treated for a broken leg and the other for chest and back injuries.

The accident took place on Wednesday last week (November 19) at around 10.30am at a building on the Felanitx-Porreres road.

The workers – aged 32 and 46 – were installing solar panels when the platform they were standing on reportedly gave way.

Outrage over higher flight prices THE increase in flight prices has sparked off

outrage among people on the islands.

The Balearic Consumers’ Association, the Mallorca Chamber of Commerce as well as CAEB and PIMEM have all criticised the disproportionate hike in airfares witnessed at Christmas, Easter and holiday weekends.

The rise, they say, negatively affects citizens, businesses and the Balearic economy.

“The lack of flights at reasonable prices in the

low-season, especially at Christmas, increases the costs paid by businesses and the people who have to fly to mainland Spain for professional or corporate reasons or for training,” said Head of CAEB Carmen Planas.

Head of the Balearic Consumers’ Association Alfonso Rodriguez criticised the increase and called for fixed prices during the holidays.

Crying over spilt milk A MAN is to serve 12 months in prison for stealing milk for his children.

During his trial, the 30-year-old father admitted to having stolen two powdered milk containers for his son and nephew from a Palma chemist in July 2013.

When he tried to leave without paying, a woman shop assistant tried to stop him and started to struggle with him, sustaining injuries. The man was ordered to pay her €20 compensation.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office was asking for a three year sentence for aggravated robbery and abuse.

Where’s the post in Llucmajor?

LLUCMAJOR Council could install communal letterboxes at the entrances to several neighbourhoods should the Spanish postal service decide to stop house to house deliveries in places with insufficient population density.

The council’s decision would benefit people living in Palmeras, Tolleric, Vallgornera, es Pas, Son Bielo, Cala Pi and s’Estanyol and authorities have earmarked a budget of approximately €18,000 for the project.

Llucmajor Council filed an appeal against the postal service’s decision, which is based on a decree issued by the Rodriguez Zapatero’s administration that established certain ‘demographic’ requirements for the postal service.

Though the postal service will continue to be provided until a decision regarding the appeal has been made, the council thought it best to start planning ahead should the ruling not be satisfactory for the municipality’s interests.

Riding the train and tram in Soller is now even cheaper TAKING the train and tram in Soller is now cheaper for Balearic Island residents.

The new fares, which were approved by the Balearic Regional Government, came into force on

Friday last week (November 21) and in some cases include a 60 per cent discount in prices.

The ordinary fare from Palma to Soller drops from €9 to €7, and the tram from Soller to Palma-Port is now

€1.50 cheaper, going from €3.50 to €2. But the good news does not stop there. A round trip between Palma and Soller now costs €12 and not €14, and a round trip between Palma and Palma-Port drops from €20 to €13.

Calls to the benefit fraud hotline double, thanks to honest Brits CALLS to the benefit fraud hotline in Spain have doubled since the British Government launched a major advertising campaign during the last week of October to encourage the public to call the hotline if they suspect benefit fraud, and to urge claimants to report changes in their circumstances.

The Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) benefit fraud hotline in Spain - 900 55 44 40 - has seen a surge in vital tipoffs that fraud investigators are now pursuing to verify if people are claiming benefits illegally.

Awareness of the campaign and associated media coverage among expatriates in Spain, and their willingness to call the hotline, is helping investigators to reduce the waste of honest taxpayers’ money on fraudsters.

Work and Pensions Minister Mark Harper said: “Hard working taxpayers

introduced a raft of measures to crack down on people who cheat the system - both abroad and in the UK - including: • Tough new rules so that 40 per cent of individuals’ benefits can be taken to repay stolen cash - on top of any fine or custodial sentence handed out by the courts; • Increased penalties from £2,000 to £5,000, without taking a fraudster to court; • A new £50 civil penalty for claimants who negligently give incorrect information on their claims or fail to report a change in circumstances which results in overpayments.

Done for drink flying

THE ongoing fight against crime in Palma has paid off.

Between January and October the crime rate in Palma decreased by 1.64 per cent and by 4.31 per cent in Playa de Palma, said Government Delegate Teresa Palmer during the presentation of a new police coordination and security programme that seeks to boost cooperation between Local and National Police and the Guardia Civil.

“Cooperation between law enforcement agencies is crucial to improve citizen security,” she said.

A BRITISH pilot was arrested for exceeding the safe alcohol limit on a Palma-Norwich flight.

The 47-year-old piloted a private plane with at least a dozen people on board in late October and was arrested after landing in the UK. He was later released on bail, but the judge ordered him to never take the controls of any plane again. In addition, the Civil Aviation Authority temporarily suspended his licence

and he could face up to two years behind bars.

On the afternoon of October 30 the pilot boarded a Canadair CL601-3A Challenger, which can hold up to 20 people, to fly from Son Sant Joan airport in Palma to the Norwich International Airport.

During the flight, one of the passengers reportedly thought the pilot was behaving in a strange way, contacted the British emergency services at Norwich airport and said he

It is unclear whether the pilot drank while in Palma or after taking off.

After the aircraft landed safely in the UK and the passengers had disembarked, the pilot

was given a breath test, according to which he had 31 micrograms of alcohol for every 100 millilitres of exhaled air, more than triple the legal limit (nine) for pilots in the UK. While appearing before

the judge, the pilot admitted to having exceeded the safe alcohol limit. According to his lawyer, the 47year-old man has more than 20 years of experience and had an impeccable record.

Remembering the victims of domestic violence in Spain TO commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women observed on November 25, the Balearic Regional Parliament paid tribute to the 45 women who have lost their lives this year in Spain at the hands of their partner or ex-partner.

President of the Balearic Regional Government Jose Ramon Bauza, President of the Parliament Margalida Duran, as well as local authorities and political representatives lit 45 candles one for each victim - set on a table covered with a black tablecloth and observed a minute of silence in their honour.

So far this year, three women have been killed on the Balearic Islands by their partner or ex-partners. The first

victim was killed in March in Son Baulo (Santa Margalida), while the next two were reported in Deia in June and in Felanitx in July.

“Discrimination and violence against women continues around the world, in all societies and regions. Women are harassed, raped, mutilated, beaten or murdered, even in their own homes,” said the European Commission in a statement released to commemorate the day.

It went on to say: “In the EU, one in three women has experienced physical and/or sexual violence since the age of 15. Outside the EU, girls are prevented from going to school or forced to marry and sexual violence remains a deplorable and widely used tactic of war.

“Women human rights defenders are threatened and attacked for doing their work. Combating all forms of violence against women and girls is a fundamental pillar of the respect for human or fundamental rights and remains a priority for the EU, both internally and externally.”

Parents unite to protest against poor state of school building THE parents of children attending sa Molinar School in Palma staged a

demonstration to voice their concern over the deterioration of the

building. The protest came a few days after part of the false ceiling of a classroom

collapsed following the torrential rains which fell on Tuesday two weeks ago.

The parents had originally planned to stage their protest at IBISEC, which is the organisation in charge of school buildings, but then decided not to after learning that

IBISEC Manager Mateu Sunyer was going to meet school principal Miquel Angel Marti to find a solution to the problem.

The meeting was also attended by a representative of Palma Council and members of the School Parents’ Association.

Last June the Education Department presented a plan which earmarked €27.7 million to improve school buildings. Several principals, however, have said the amount is insufficient because not enough money has been invested in maintenance over the last few years.

German and Swiss investors buy Golf de Andratx A GROUP of German and Swiss investors have bought the Golf de Andratx Golf Course situated in Camp de Mar. The new sole director Dirk Dünkler said: “We have formulated a business plan for the next five years to go from 22,000 green fees to 30,000, with an annual 10 per cent growth.”

Golf de Andratx had reportedly run up

a €9.1-million debt and chose to initiate insolvency proceedings to avoid going bankrupt.

“It has a lot of potential, but we think it was a mistake to focus it on the German market. We want to open it to the Spanish and other markers to make its infrastructure profitable,” said Dünkler.

Decision time for oil prospecting BALEARIC ISLAND residents will not have much longer to wait to find out if the green light will be given to oil prospecting.

Balearic Senator Maria Antonia Garau said the Environmental Impact Statement, which is used to predict the environmental consequences of a project, policy or plan before the decision to move forward with the proposed action is made, will be made public in December. The statement will be

drawn up by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment.

Senator Garau said she was certain the statement would be negative and prohibit searching for oil off the Balearic coast. She made it clear that she, people living on the islands, the Balearic Parliament and the president of the regional government, Jose Ramon Bauza, rejected the proposed oil exploration.

Spanish Queen to visit Mallorca QUEEN LETIZIA will be in Mallorca today, Thursday November 27, to participate in the inauguration of the 17th Volunteers’ Congress scheduled to be held at the University of the Balearic Islands.

The Spanish Queen last visited Mallorca in late August, when she went to a local fair in Sant Agusti.

The Volunteers’ Congress is organised by the Health Ministry, the Social Services Department and the Volunteers’ Platform of the Balearic Islands.

3rd store for Leroy Merlin FRENCH homeimprovement and gardening retailer Leroy Merlin is to open a third store in Mallorca.

The store will be located in Manacor and have more than 200 parking spaces.

The project is expected to create approximately 100 direct jobs and 50 indirect jobs.

Police look into school bullying

After informing the teachers, the bullied girl’s parents decided to take her out of school, said the mother of one victim.

According to the complaint, the girl continued to be bullied even after she left her old school and though she had no contact with her former classmates, it appears two of the bullies would wait for her at the entrance of her new school to insult her and try to assault her. They are even said to have followed her home.

It did not stop there; a few days ago the bullied girls were at Plaza Madrid when they were attacked by a teen gang.

The victims have also been getting private messages through Facebook.

Cleaning up graffiti costs thousands of euros GRAFFITI removal costs run into thousands of euros every year.

Serveis Ferroviais de Mallorca (SFM) - the company that operates the metre gauge railway network on the island estimates that the costs of removing graffiti from

train stations amounts to €150,000 a year in taxpayers’ money.

Graffiti vandalism is one of the main problems facing the island’s railway network, said SFM sources talking to local press. Vandals tend to target trains, bridges,

buildings, marquees and underpasses.

However, with the 212 surveillance cameras recently installed in all platforms and cars, the Regional Government hopes to minimise damages and fight vandalism.

BULLYING: It can have traumatic effects on the victims.

NATIONAL POLICE and the Juvenile Attorney’s Office are currently investigating an alleged school bullying case that has turned two girl’s lives into a living hell.

“We are going through a horrible nightmare. My daughter will not leave the house and we keep getting threats. We are followed on the streets and the bullies are very aggressive. This is obviously a case of school bullying, but we are at God’s mercy until authorities do something,” said Natividad, one of the complainants.

“It all started when a 12-year-old girl was bullied by some of her classmates. They would constantly insult, assault and harass her in the presence of others,” she said.

Letters better than presents at Xmas AS surprising as it may seem, most people on the islands would rather get a handwritten letter for Christmas than an expensive gift.

Data from a study conducted by DaWanda.es shows a staggering 87.7 per cent of people living on the islands would prefer getting a postcard in the mail for Christmas, whilst 82 per cent would take a handwritten letter from their significant other or a relative over any expensive gift.

The study - which focused on Christmas traditions and gifts - concluded that 40.3

per cent of respondents used to mail postcards to their relatives, 38.2 per cent to their friends and 20.4 per cent to their romantic interests.

In addition, figures show two in every five Balearic households believe expensive and technological gifts have destroyed the meaning of giving gifts for Christmas.

According to the study, 75.5 per cent of Balearic Islands residents love Christmas, while 22.2 per cent of respondents said they do not like it that much, and only 2.1 per cent said they hated it.

Squatters detained for alleged abuse SEVERAL squatters were detained for allegedly abusing children at the old train station on Calle Jacint Verdaguer.

For the last few months, neighbours had been alerting police to the fact that many young people gather at the old

train station of Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) to smoke marihuana and get high.

Following a thorough investigation, the police learned that a large number of minors who had escaped from the island’s reformatories would often seek refuge in the abandoned building. Once inside, they would abuse illegal substances.

No Hiding Place As 50 Countries Sign Deal To Share Your Information Automatic exchange of information on a global scale will become a reality in 2017, as 51 countries signed an agreement to share financial information. Another 35 jurisdictions will join the following year.

All Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and G20 countries, as well as most major international financial centres, have signed a “multilateral competent authority agreement” that will activate the automatic sharing of financial data for tax purposes.

It shows the determination from governments across the globe to prevent tax evasion and capture lost tax revenue.

Tax authorities of participating countries will be able to gather much more information on the assets their taxpayers hold abroad.

The OECD explains that automatic exchange of information “can provide timely information on non-compliance where tax has been evaded either on an investment return or the underlying capital sum, even where the tax administrations have had no previous indications of non-

Fifty-eight jurisdictions, known as the “early adopters”, have pledged to make the first exchange in 2017.

This includes Spain, the UK, most EU countries, Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey, and Gibraltar.

Only a few years ago, in 2008, the then Swiss finance minister Hans Rudolf Merz vowed that banking

secrecy would prevail, saying that its foreign opponents would have to “bite the bullet” and accept it.

The US does not appear on any of the lists, since under its own Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) it will start automatically exchanging information with countries around the world from 2015.

After the signing ceremony, OECD Secretary-General, Angel Gurria, commented: “We are making concrete progress towards the G20 objective of winning the fight against tax evasion… The world is quickly becoming a smaller place for tax cheats.”

The global “Standard for Automatic Exchange of Financial Account Information in Tax Matters” is different from most current bilateral agreements, where authorities have to make formal requests for information. Now they will automatically receive information on all their taxpayers

who hold assets in the participating territories.

The standard sets out the financial account information to be exchanged, including balances, interest, dividends and sales proceeds from financial assets. It covers accounts held by individuals and entities, including trusts and foundations.

The OECD will establish a peer review process to ensure that the automatic exchange of data is effectively implemented. It is encouraging developing countries to join the movement.

The move towards the end of financial privacy has already had a significant impact on state coffers, as more and more people realise there is nowhere left to hide. According to the OECD, 20 countries have raised $47 billion (€37bn) through voluntary disclosure schemes since 2009.

Cross border tax planning has completely changed over the last 15

years; particularly since the move towards global tax transparency escalated in the wake of the financial crisis.

Where once we used to take financial privacy for granted, we now have to accept that it is history. Tax authorities will have information on our income and assets, wherever we hold them.

One thing has not changed however, which is that every individual has the right to structure their assets in a tax efficient manner.

You need to establish how you can use approved tax advantageous structures here in Spain to reduce your tax liabilities. It is important to be compliant with local tax law, but it is also important to protect your wealth from taxation wherever possible. You can do both if you take specialist advice.

Obituary

A sad farewell to Cayetana de Alba WITH the death of the Duchess of Alba Spain has lost one of its most recognisable figures.

To many who only knew her in her later years she was a figure of fun, mainly because of her looks - frizzy hair, sometimes dyed red, a pasty white complexion - and her forthright public pronouncements.

But they forget the great influence she had in her younger years as the most titled, and one of the wealthiest, people in Spain.

“She dressed like Grace Kelly in those days,” said Sheelagh Tennant, a Scots-Irish expat who has lived in Spain for most of her life. “I met her in Granada in 1960. She was very graceful. She was not as beautiful as Grace Kelly, but that was her look and style. And she certainly was good looking in her own right.”

The Duchess, who died aged 88 last week after a bout of pneumonia, was never out of the society pages of magazines.

Known as Cayetana de Alba, she was hugely rich as well as being Spain’s biggest private landowner.

The Duchess was married three times, firstly to Luis Martínez de Irujo with whom she had six children, secondly to Jesus Aguirre and lastly to Alfonso Diez who was 24 years her junior, who survives her as do all her children.

Euro strengthens Commentary by Moneycorp

EUR Among the big four the euro was the winner once again over the last week. It strengthened by three and a half Japanese yen, one US cent and by a cent against sterling.

Euro-zone economic data were not good but investors have yet to be convinced that the ECB will be allowed to launch any meaningful money-printing stimulus programme. As long as it fails to do so they will feel no compulsion to sell the euro. Last week, however, they did feel the need to sell the dollar, perhaps because they thought it was high enough for now. They sold the yen because the prime minister of Japan called a snap general election. And they sold the pound because the prospect of higher interest rates had retreated over the horizon.

USD The dollar had to concede a cent to the euro last week but it strengthened by one and a half Japanese yen. It also added a third of a cent against sterling.

There was very little wrong with the US economic data. Last Friday’s retail sales and consumer confidence numbers were

better than expected. The University of Michigan index of consumer sentiment delivered the strongest reading in more than seven years. But it was not enough to encourage fresh buying of dollars by investors. In fact, they took the opportunity to sell the dollar, perhaps because they thought it had risen far enough for now. Sterling could not keep up, though. The prime minister’s talk of “red warning lights… on the dashboard of the global economy” in an article he wrote for The Guardian newspaper did nothing to improve the mood of investors who were already smarting from the postponement of higher interest rates.

CAD The Canadian dollar had a reasonably successful week. It strengthened by two thirds of a US cent and added a cent against sterling. The Loonie did little to earn that success, most of which was achieved last Friday after a rebound in oil prices. Manufacturing shipments went up by 2.1% in September. There was a net outflow of securities investment for the same month and wholesale sales increased by 1.8%.

AUD The Australian dollar got off to a good start, strengthening by more than a cent against sterling last Friday, but gave back all that and more as the week progressed. It lost two cents to the euro, one and a half cents to sterling and was down by half a US cent.

That was some achievement, because neither the pound nor the Greenback was in favour with investors last week. They seemed to think the US dollar had risen far enough and they were inclined to sell any spikes. As for sterling, they were still smarting from the postponement of higher interest rates.

However, the economic data from China were not very good and there were no domestic ecostats to offset them.

Australian vehicle sales were down by -0.5% on the year and of the two forwardlooking economic indicators, one pointed to contraction and the other to zero growth.

Between factory employees and indirect jobs the Burgos fire will affect approximately 2,000 families, but no Campofrio work contracts will be rescinded, the company said.

an adjoining ham-curing facility which employs 50 workers.

A third factory is untouched, but 70 per cent of the 5,000 pigs slaughtered there each day were destined for the ruined module.

Campofrio is committed to resuming production in Burgos, company sources emphasised, but they conceded that it was early to guarantee “100 per cent of the present jobs.”

At the same time, processing 60,000 tons of products cannot be done with “just a couple of people,” the company added.

Xenophobia undermines unity A RISING tide of xenophobia is undermining Western European unity.

Austerity, the threat of a return to recession, service cutbacks, unemployment and inflation combine to fuel a virulent nationalism tearing at the fabric of society. The first manifestations of disquiet are anti-austerity protests sweeping EU capitals and major cities.

I said it first: This week international policymakers debated if the US dollar and Euro can compete with rival economies.

The effect is aggravated by former trading partners like Russia opting for alternatives and self-sufficiency.

Europeans should never be economic migrants. However, as the Euro-zone slips back into recession young people face a bleak future. The young ponder greener grass opportunities in faraway countries.

In doing so newcomers face growing hostility as they enter job markets that can no longer offer employment to their own nationals. This is where the blue touch paper of xenophobic up-the-drawbridge sentiment creeps in. Growing resentment against immigration in Britain and Germany is well recognised.

Fuelled by NATO’s anti-Russian rhetoric there is simmering, anti-Russian sentiment in the Baltic States. These three nations host large Russian ethnic communities as England hosts many of Irish background. Desperate to separate the EU from Russia in order that it becomes more reliant on American trade,

the US provokes anti-Russian feeling.

EU anti-Russian sanctions are causing a backlash in Germany, Poland, Spain and France. The French economy, already slipping into recession, will face a bill of nearly €3 billion and the loss of thousands of shipbuilding jobs if, caving in to American pressure, France fails to honour its shipbuilding obligations to Russia.

In what is now Ukraine, the birthland of Russia, the Russian language is the most used. As I write, frontier posts and barbed wire walls are being erected. Imagine that happening on Northern Ireland or Scottish borders.

If xenophobia rears its ugly head, all Europeans will suffer. Those who live in greenhouses shouldn’t throw stones.

AS if crying babies, noisy student neighbours or an uncomfortable mattress weren’t enough to keep us up at night, a new study has revealed that women suffer terribly from sleepless nights, because of money worries too.

Women are apparently much more bothered about cash flow than men are, and thinking about such financial problems, causes them to toss and turn all night.

Fretting about how to pay household bills and how to begin some proper saving

On top of these, women were particularly worried about paying for the future and repaying back debt.

All this worry is not doing women any favours either.

The sleepless nights impact on their ability to concentrate, get work done and it negatively affects their relationships.

So why are women more stressed about money than men?

Some might say that women are exposed to more stressful situations than men, as they

not only have their own working lives, but also tend to take on more responsibilities in the home.

Also it’s true that women in general earn less than men, so if they’re employed part-

time for example, they’re less likely to have health benefits and financial resources.

Another theory is that women are more comfortable with reporting higher levels of stress.

If you notice that you might be one of these women lacking sleep and stressing over money it’s time to take some action.

Remember it’s not selfish to look after yourself, it’s normal; it’s healthy.

And it will make you more effective at dealing with responsibilities at work and home.

Go for a walk. Stop and sit in the sun for a while. Take a relaxing bath.

Force yourself to take care of yourself.

Also don’t sweep financial concerns under the carpet to be dealt with in the future.

Maybe you feel bad or embarrassed about your debt, and that can lead to inaction.

But it’s essential to face and deal with the situation head on.

If it’s too hard to do this alone, reach out for help.

Still going strong EVERY morning I go to the gym to work out and have my radio with me.

One station plays oldies 24 hours a day, year-round, with no commercials and I happened to hear Leapy Lee’s tune this morning, the Little Arrows tune!

Now I know a bit about 50’s and 60’s rock, but had never heard the tune before and in fact I had to look at the display to see who was doing that particular song. I wrote down the name and then checked on the internet and it was Leapy Lee. I don’t remember hearing it before but that happens sometimes with obscure one-hit wonders!

It’s kind of neat that he did this tune nearly 50 years ago and it still gets air time, so I just wanted him to know it’s still being played somewhere on the planet at some time during the day.

Thanks for a good tune, Leapy, and good health in the future!

Upbeat outlook I RETIRED to Spain from Scotland approximately two years ago and am now 67 years of age.

Shortly after I arrived in Spain I was diagnosed as having prostate cancer. As you can imagine I was devastated, but after radiotherapy treatment at Hospital Clinico, Malaga I have the all-clear and it feels great.

Therefore Leapy Lee should not feel down as he will probably be OK, but if the news is bad, remember it can be treated successfully.

Our UK government’s policy towards the EU is being led, not by a real assessment of the pros and cons, but by their terror of losing seats to UKIP. And of course it follows that we should tell our UK contacts not to vote for UKIP, a party with no policies except to get out of the EU. They try to make us believe that would solve our problems, while it would solve none.

Although the main parties seem paralysed with fear of UKIP, they could get their credibility back if they would only come out and fight Farage instead of appeasing him.

Vanishing act I WOULD like to know if anyone has had the same experience that I had.

On November 12 at a supermarket in La Cañada a 35cm x 35cm calendar went on the conveyer belt and through the till. It appeared on my bill but never came out at my end.

I went straight to my car and seeing it wasn’t there returned to the store within 10 minutes to report its absence. It was too

large to slip out of my trolley and too large and colourful to be left on the conveyer belt.

Any ideas, anyone?

Changing times I’VE been in Spain for the last 15 years on and off and have seen many changes and not for the better!

1. There is a high speed train track to nowhere with millions of euros wasted, plus a bronze statue of King Felipe and the queen outside the town hall in Fuengirola which is now a hotel.

2. People are living with their retired mum and dad with six or eight people in a twobedroom flat without employment or money, living on dad’s pension. That’s wrong!

3. There are people living in doorways like the woman at the BBVA bank in Los Boliches who has been there for two years.

She goes to Santa Fe hostel when she gets a few euros and is always clean and sleeps sitting upright on a suitcase. I told Age Concern but nothing

happened.

4. They are driving retired expats back to the UK with stupid tax laws and will miss all the UK pensions we spend here when we’ve gone.

5. There are too many beggars, genuine or not, and no wonder all of Europe go to the UK for benefits. Some things in the rest of Europe are good as you can’t get benefits until you pay in for two years.

That would stop them all going to the UK and taking my family’s money!

6. People come on holiday for sun, sand, food and entertainment, starting at 9pm and stopping at 12 midnight.

Madrid people buy cheap apartments over existing bars then get them closed down for noise! They should not be able to do this and they should only complain if a bar opens up after buying a flat.

7. The town hall wants to sit in ivory towers and look down at locals fishing for sardines and riding donkeys. That is Spain’s two tier system: the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots.’

It’s too early I AM old enough to remember the old ‘Post early for Christmas’ slogan, although I believe the good old GPO (remember the GPO?) was thinking of a just a week or so ahead of the big day, not months.

I very much doubt that they imagined people would one day be buying Christmas cards and presents the moment Halloween was over. Much of it is the fault of shops and chain stores where they put up their decorations and sometimes their prices in mid-November.

They then brainwash and strong-arm the public into believing it is their duty as consumers to respond.

Spain used to be different in this respect, staving off the trappings and feeding frenzy until well into December but no, even that’s been taken away from us now.

I enjoy Christmas as much as the next person but please, please, please: not in November.

Finally arrived back home LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT

HAT was most definitely the trip that was. Everything that could go wrong - did.

Right up to missing my final connecting flight from Barcelona to Mallorca. Not my fault. With an already tight schedule, my flight from Denmark was delayed for 40 minutes, this led to the ol’ boy panting and dripping between terminals one and two at Barcelona, where I finally arrived at the gate at exactly take-off time. There’s nothing more frustrating than standing at the gate watching the doors close to the plane you should be on. Anyway I did manage to catch one an hour later (at an extra charge of €120, I may

add). Frankly I can never fathom the often unbelievable variance in airline prices.

Sometimes you can travel great distances for €30-odd and at other times it can cost a fortune for a 45-minute hop.

Ah well, what do us minions know?

On the brighter side I’ve managed to pick up a number of UK bookings for next year.

One of the reasons is that most of the 60s’ lot are actually dead! Never thought I could be a commercial draw simply for being alive - funny ol’ life, innit?

Denmark I found a little depressing, what with the cold and most of the populace shrouded in black winter attire.

The people are most friendly, however, and I’d like to thank them for making the ol’ boy feel thoroughly welcome and comfortable. By the way, all you Denmarkians, that orange thing which appeared briefly in

One of the most interesting occurrences for me happened on the very doorstep where I was staying. My girlfriend had told me that her upstairs neighbours were Muslims and I

had glimpsed a couple of shrouded-up ladies passing by the kitchen window. Lo and behold the day before I left there was a knock at the door.

It turned out to be the same two ladies standing on the doorstep holding a... poinsettia.

To my astonishment, and pleasure, I may add, they then welcomed me to Denmark and, handing me the plant, wished me a happy Christmas!

My lady friend told me that both the mother and father were employed and their two daughters attended the local school. Now that’s what I call integration. Contrary to what a number of people think, I am not a racist and if all immigrants acted and integrated in the same way as this lovely family, I would have no problems at all.

Unfortunately, as most of us know, this family is the exception rather than the rule.

Nevertheless it was a pleasure to see how peaceful, reasonably-thinking people can actually live together in peace and harmony. Good to be back!

You need to free your mind of all worries if possible and allow yourself to relax and you will find you go through surgery and recover very well. Just knowing that my dear friend Emma was at home looking after my children was a huge comfort to me. She had flown over from England and cooked and cleaned and nurtured.

She came to visit me every day in the hospital and even tried to rescue a stray puppy outside the hospital one day!

Special thanks to her for all her love and the great chemo cookery book! It was time to get serious on the food front and

start cooking meals to boost my immune system in preparation for chemotherapy.

The next few weeks were spent pottering about looking after myself and my stitches.

People were most impressed by my mastectomy bra and ‘chicken fillet’. “You look normal, Erica.” Normal is exactly how I felt! In reality I wasn’t upset about losing my breast and at times forgot that I only had one!

It’s amazing how quickly you adapt to changes. Reconstruction would be a thing for the future; I had to get better first and then I could think about bikinis!

The district nurse visited me at my home to check how my stitches were doing and was pleased. It was nice of him to come to my house as I still couldn’t drive and this way I avoided the germs of the doctor’s waiting room! They looked dry and the wound had closed very well so he removed the stitches. Each little procedure that liberates your body from the vestiges of an operation feels like a mini triumph.

Life ticked on as normal despite still not being able to drive. I would soon be behind the wheel again though. You

need to give yourself 15-20 days after the operation before driving but each person is different.

I started with short journeys and made sure I put on my seat belt and the handbrake with my ‘good’ arm.

Just before I could get back My friend went to a lot of effort to help me, with probiotics to boost my immune system and a large amount of chocolate! behind the wheel Marta, yes yet another friend from England, arrived. It was great to see her and catch up and we did the shopping and various tasks that are more difficult singlehanded.

She had gone to a lot of effort to think of the things that would help me. For example, probiotics to boost my immune system and naturally an enormous amount of chocolate!

The phone rang and my appointment with the oncologist was confirmed first with the radiologist on November 13 and then the oncologist for November 19 in Malaga.

I went to the Carlos Haya Hospital to talk to the radiologist and they explained that I would be receiving chemo first, with the idea of eradicating any traces of cancer in my system and then radiotherapy a month after the end of the chemo.

The radiotherapy is concentrated in the area you have had your tumours removed from to try to ensure they don’t regrow. I was informed radiotherapy would not hurt but my skin would be very sensitive and that I would have to use special creams.

The sessions would be intensive and daily and could be up to 20 sessions with weekends off for a rest. This would be confirmed later down the line after a full body x-ray and to see what shape I was in after the chemo in terms of weight loss and the like.

Now just to wait for my appointment with the oncologist to find out how many sessions of chemo I would have and to ask about all the side-effects and to cover any doubts I had.

I was very keen to get started. Roll on November 19 was all I could think.

November 19 and I went to the ‘Materno’ Hospital in Malaga for my appointment with the

oncologist. It was a long wait.

As I looked around the waiting room it started to hit home what the side-effects of chemo would be. Apart from the obvious signs like hair loss, I caught snippets of conversations about many other side-effects such as nausea.

Some people seemed cheerful and others were very low indeed. Mental note to self; try and be one of the cheerful people Erica! Then finally I was called in.

The oncologist went over my operation results, examined me and asked me how I felt. To be honest I felt fine apart from having headaches. He decided to send me for scans for my head, torso and bones as a precautionary measure.

This was a positive move because if the cancer had spread to another part of my body I would rather know about it.

My chemotherapy would start very soon and I was told to come back to the hospital on November 26 for blood tests and depending on the results I would then be given a start date for treatment.

Not long to go now. The sooner I started, the sooner I would finish.

THERE’S a part of me which is always going to be nine years old and passionately in love with Robin. He was a skewbald pony that was unaware of my existence except for when I would lovingly proffer polo mints and carrots to him. He would accept them and then return to his usual pastime of wandering around minding his own business in a field. I didn’t care, I loved him anyway.

Which is why I think it is okay that my daughter is also head over heels in love with a four legged friend, only his name is Barney. He also likes polos and carrots, as well as apples, and being scratched around the ears. Best of all he is also a very well trained animal who lives with his other well trained mates at Son Malero riding stables, just outside of the old town of Calvià in Mallorca.

We came across the stables a few months ago now, and from day one it was clear that

Family Matters not only was it run by some very well trained and responsible people, but also that all of their pupils were similarly crazy about ponies.

Sophie was trained in the UK to British Horse Society standards and all the stables staff speak fluent English and Spanish. A lot of their lessons have waiting lists, which I think is a good sign, and their standards are high enough to keep my old school ways happy as well.

Saturday mornings are dedicated to ‘Pony Club.’ From 10am to 2pm you will find a gaggle of youngsters (who are separated into the Big ones and the Small ones and taught accordingly) grooming, mucking out, riding and

During the summer, Christmas and Easter holidays there are week long Pony Camp events.

You can choose to spend a day, a week, a month (or even three months, don’t forget, the Spanish school holidays really ARE that long) cooing over the ponies and staying out of

The days are separated out to account for the sun, so the outdoor jobs including riding are done first thing in the morning and then education, themed games and other activities are organised for when the sun gets unbearable. These are a great opportunity for your kid to

‘turn off the television and go do something less boring instead,’ in fact you could separate your day into two: half of it with the horses, and the other half on the beach.

It’s also possible to go for a hack or take a lesson in the arena or the lunge ring as you wish, and obviously according to your ability. They can lend you all the protective gear that you may want to wear as well, including hard hat and body protectors as required.

That’s my daughter at the front of the line there, two months before that photo was taken she wouldn’t have had the ability or the confidence to lead. Now if only I could find a way to wish myself back into a nine year’s old body and rekindle my romance with Robin then I could join her.

PAIN’S president Mariano Rajoy recently confessed there were possible flaws in communicating his strategy over Cataluña.

In fact there are flaws in communicating most of his strategies because Rajoy likes to stick to a “least said, soonest mended” policy.

Up to a point it works although it makes him appear not only immobile, but also cold and distant.

Rajoy went on to say that he would need to explain his motives for opposing Catalan independence but he might as well save his breath. However much he explains, Rajoy will not authorise a referendum and that is the only strategy Catalan separatists want to hear about.

PABLO IGLESIAS: ‘Podemos will start from scratch.’

Pablo’s a big boy now PABLO IGLESIAS was recently voted secretary general of the fledgling political party, Podemos.

Now it must go the way of all political parties with an internal organisation and policies as well as the promises.

Podemos will start from scratch, Iglesias has said, but is

that sufficient to dissociate the party from his pearls of wisdom including the claim that life in Venezuela is better than in Spain? Iglesias does have a vested interest in Venezuela, it’s true, as he and others in the Podemos non-hierarchy are former advisers to its late president, Hugo Chavez, and his successor, Nicolas Maduro.

Iglesias would also be wise to bury his accusation that the privately-financed media are a

threat to freedom of speech, as the perennial television pundit will soon need them more than ever.

A more recently-expressed ambition is the Podemos leader’s intention of doing away with the ‘Regime of the Transition.’ Iglesias, aged 36, was in nappies during the Transition. He must be either naive or arrogant if he believes that starting from scratch requires obliterating the move from dictatorship to democracy.

It is thanks to the Transition that Iglesias can do and say what he does today.

Reasons for feeling sick FORMER Justice minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon said he was “nauseated” by the reasons behind the withdrawal of his Abortion Reform bill.

It was all the same to him whether this resulted from lobbying by abortion clinics or

the influence of women’s groups, he told the Asociacion Catolica de Propagandistas (ACdP) conference.

He was speaking on “The family: challenges and hope,” but women who are as profamily as Ruiz-Gallardon have always terminated pregnancies in unsolvable situations.

His law would not have prevented that. He would simply have pushed abortion underground, making countless women feel as “nauseated” as the minister himself and putting their lives at risk, too.

A smoother ride ONLY six months to go until the May 2015 municipal and regional elections. It would, of course, be cynical to associate this with the amount of asphalting, improvements, subsidies and general bonhomie radiating from town and city halls all over Spain.

Nothing beats a filled-in pothole for securing votes.

PET owners are being warned to watch their animal’s diet over the Christmas season.

Treating your dog like one of the family and indulging it with the rich food from Christmas dinner can lead to serious health problems and land the animal at the vets.

Research shows that 56 per cent of owners will feed their dog potentially harmful foods, and 15 per cent of pet owners have taken their dog to the vet over Christmas as it has become ill because of the ‘treats’ it has been fed.

These include stuffing, raisins, chocolate, turkey and gravy, all of which can lead to intestinal problems, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Raisins and sultanas found in mince pies can result in kidney failure in their dogs.

Owners wanting to indulge their dogs should buy treats specially formulated for their animals.

NEW pet passports will soon be required for animals travelling abroad, but what does this mean for your dog, cat or ferret?

If your pet was given a passport before December 29, 2014, you do not need to get a new one. Your old one is valid. If your pet is given a pet passport after December 29, 2014, it will receive a new pet passport free of charge.

Which animals need a pet passport?

The new EU-system is for cats, dogs and ferrets.

For other pets, national legislation applies.

By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.

SOME 30 years ago expatriates investing in a villa or old agricultural property in Spain often found they inherited fertile soil, well-fertilized naturally, perhaps over centuries, by mules, donkeys, horses, goats, sheep and free range poultry.

However, this type of land was soon sold up and by the boom of the 1980s to 2000s many villas and rows of townhouses were being built on overworked, impoverished land, which would make it difficult to develop a garden without improving the soil before planting anything.

So what can be done?

Let me share some of the things we did.

ROOTS MANURE: Natural soil improvers enhance soil’s texture and moisture-holding properties.

1. One of the men who built the walls around our plot was a part-time shepherd with 100 sheep and goats. We asked if we could have a few sacks of well-rotted manure. Amazingly, he had a heap which he wanted clearing.

When we dug the first

space full it had obviously been there for a good number of years and was nice and crumbly, with no smell.

Over a few days we moved six boot loads in sacks and it was worked into our first shrub beds.

2. When we started our vegetable plot we

discovered another heap which another shepherd was about to sell to a major vegetable grower.

We asked if we could have a few sacks first. He said yes and said he would charge the equivalent of €1 a sack.

We immediately shook hands on that and were

even more pleased when we discovered it was full of thousands of fat red worms.

3. Within 10 years, just half a flock of the original 11 flocks of sheep and goats in our valley remained, and it was not possible to obtain any manure.

However we found that a local agricultural cooperative sold inexpensive sacks of dried goat and sheep manure.

Originally this was €3 a sack. Ten years later the price is €5 a sack and still good value.

4. Now we have a regular supply of rabbit manure from our own rabbits, grown for cooking organic paellas, plus manure from the chickens we keep for the same purpose.

The chicken droppings are added to the compost heap or composted in a separate pile for a year as they are too strong to use without first composting.

5. We have also experimented with growing green manures and working these into the soil, as well as using spent mushroom composts. Ash from our log fires is sprinkled around onions, leeks and garlic.

In fact there is a table comparing 16 things that we have used from time to time on page 75 of our book, Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain.

There is certainly a benefit in using natural soil improvers rather than inorganic chemicals which do nothing to improve the texture of soil, nor its ability to hold moisture.

Neither will chemicals support building up the level of beneficial microorganisms, which help break down added manures and enable roots to extract nutrients from the soil.

MARBELLA: Andalucian towns are leading the way.

Home sales are on the up as prices stabilise THERE were 79,561 homes sales in the third quarter of the year, up 1.4 per cent on the previous three months.

It was also the second best figure in the last six quarters, with only the January to March total of 83,022 being better in that period.

The statistics from the Spanish Property Registrars show that the upward trend was due to resales which totalled 52,127, up 8.93 per cent from the previous quarter.

By contrast sales of new homes fell 10.37 per cent in the same period to 27,434.

Leading the way was Andalucia, with a total of 16,006 transactions, with Valencia (12,189) next on the list, then Catalonia (11,975) and Madrid (10,883).

Increased sales have been reflected in a stabilisation of prices with just a 0.08 per cent fall on the previous quarter, while year-on-year the prices rose 1.15 per cent.

The registrars gave the credit for recent good figures to price reductions averaging more than 32 per cent since the 2007 peak attracting foreign buyers. Of homes sales, 13.1 per cent were to foreigners in the third quarter, a new record for Spain.

Britons accounted for 18 per cent of homes bought by foreign buyers, with the French accounting for 10.4 per cent, Russians 7.5 per cent, Germans 6.4 per cent, Belgians 6.1 per cent, Swedes 6 per cent and Italians 4.1 per cent.

In other figures just released by the National

Institute of Statistics it would appear that the quarterly rise was driven

by September’s figures.

Sales went up 13 per cent in that month and, excluding social housing, there were 24,096 sales registered, the highest level in four years and 14 per cent up on a monthly basis.

In the 12 months to the end of September there were 216,682 sales, almost identical to the same period last year.

On that basis it looks like the Spanish housing market is no longer shrinking, according to Mark Stucklin of Spanish Property Insight.

He pointed out that, looking at the annualised change in sales each month, this year clearly improved on last year, excluding the first two

months of the year when figures were artificially distorted by tax changes.

The data also shows that the difference between resales and newly built properties continues to widen, though sales of both types increased in September, with resales up 17 per cent and new builds up 10.5 per cent.

A breakdown of the figures on a regional basis show that the province of Malaga along with the Balearic Islands have seen sales rise close to 15 per cent this year.

The Canaries and Alicante have also been showing strong gains.

Coastal provinces where foreigners tend to buy are doing much better than provinces in the interior, which rely more on local demand.

Cruise summit ends in Madrid TOURISM boards need to be involved in the promotion and development of destinations and need to work closely with ports in order to attract more cruise passengers.

The 2014 International Cruise Summit held in Madrid also concluded that turnaround ports need to have proximity to an airport with good international connections. One such port with the necessary requirements is Malaga port, which sent a delegation to the annual cruise summit. The president of the MalagaCosta del Sol Tourism Board said at the conference that the industry “is proving to be enjoying very good health.”

Major players in the cruise industry gathered in Madrid to discuss the future of the industry that last year hosted more than 20 million passengers worldwide.

It concluded that China is the market to follow, and when Chinese cruisers eventually come to Europe, the ports must be ready.

THE second leg of the 2014/15 Volvo Ocean Race started out from Cape Town, South Africa, in near-gale force conditions last week.

The seven participating boats are racing to Abu Dhabi and this leg of the competition could well prove to be the toughest. Before heading out from port, Team SCA’s skipper Sam Davies said: “We will have Southern Ocean, Doldrums, pirates, Persian Gulf - we have a big month ahead of us.”

The 6,125-nautical mile second leg of one of the world’s toughest sailing competitions is one of the longest stretches of the course that will see the competitors finish in Gothenburg, Sweden, in mid-to-late June of next year.

Spain’s Team MAPFRE are hoping for a better finish this time round after coming in last place in the first leg of the race from Alicante, Spain to Cape Town. Their determination was evident as they set out from Cape Town first out of the blocks as the other teams exercised caution in the windy conditions. With two new crew members on board, the Spanish team are looking to regain a foothold during the second leg that is due to finish in Abu Dhabi between December 11 and 15.

Persian Gulf FLOATING PALACE: Roman Abramovich’s super yacht Eclipse.

Super yachts visit the Med THREE of the world’s biggest super yachts have been spotted cruising around the waters of the Med recently, including the largest and most impressive private yacht in the world the Azzam.

The 180-metre super yacht pulled in to refuel in Gibraltar before making the short hop over to Morocco for a stopover. Delivered to its Abu Dhabibased owner in late 2013, the Azzam provides accommodation and furnishings more routinely found in the world’s most luxurious hotels.

Also spotted in the waters off Spain’s southern coast was Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich’s opulent floating

palace, Eclipse. The €340 million yacht features two helicopter landing pads, 24 cabins, two swimming pools and a disco hall. The Eclipse was something of an upgrade from Abramovich’s previous super yacht, Luna, which was also a recent visitor to Gibraltar for refuelling.

Though luxurious and sleek in design, Luna has features that make it the aquatic equivalent of a tank. It features an anti-missile system, bullet-proof windows, bomb-proof doors and antiterrorist sound doors.

Put the three yachts together, and there was well in excess of €1.4 billion worth of floating opulence cruising around the waters of Spain.

SEAT takes on more workers SEAT is poised to hire 233 temporary workers at the Martorell facilities in Spain.

The new recruits will join the company this week to cope with a one-off increase in demand for the SEAT Ibiza and the Audi Q3.

This new spate of workers join the more than 550 people hired by SEAT throughout 2014, most of these in January, because the number of shifts on Production Line Two increased to three as a result of growing market demand for the Leon.

In October, 200 of these employees signed a contract with SEAT. Agreements reached with labour unions to hire temporary workers to cover increased production volume provide that SEAT must give recruitment priority to temporary workers who had

In July, the 45 members of the first graduating class of apprentices in SEAT’s new dual system vocational training programme were also hired by the company. SEAT’s global sales grew by 10.5 per cent from January to October to reach a total of 326,000 units sold. The increase is due to the sales success of SEAT models in Central and Eastern Europe, where orders went up by 50.5 per cent in the first 10 months of the year.

EL TORO RC faced a tough match against senior league leaders RC Ponent A team in Principes de España.

With the majority of Toro’s players under 23 and also at about half the weight of their far more experienced opponents, the youngsters nonetheless put up a good fight.

The home team made their mark early on, scoring five tries before half time.

Although El Toro spent plenty of time in their opponents half, the opponents defence was just too strong and they were unable to break through. They toughened up and also tightened their defence for the second half of the match and were able to take advantage of a mistake by Ponent which resulted in a try for Alex Pages and converted by Nick Demangeat.

This gave the El Toro youngsters a morale boost and they went on to score two more tries with some good running from Alex Pages and Ro Doiztua.

Final score was 58 to 17 which keeps RC Ponent on top of the league table.

The RC Ponent B team faced Shamrock RC in Son Roca. The hosts made a

good start and played well to be ahead by half time.

During the second half the experience of RC Ponent came to the fore and they were able to make a comeback, finally winning by six points to 27.

In the closely fought match between Bahia RC and Corsaris RFC the hosts just came out winners by 38 points to 30.

The other match in the Senior League was between Ibiza RC and Dimonis RC. The stronger and better organised hosts won by the considerable margin of 56 points to 7.

In a triangular tournament played between the ladies of Shamrock RC, El Toro RC and hosts RC

Ponent. El Toro RC made a great start against Shamrock RC with a hattrick of tries scored in the first half of the match by wing Faye Xidakis and another by Marina Bravo.

They didn’t fare so well against the strong RC Ponent girls who also beat Shamrock RC. There was a great atmosphere for the Rugby Day which took place in Inca and was organised by Mallorca Bocs and the Inca Local Council.

In the U8 competition winners were El Toro RC A against teams from Mallorca Bocs, RC Ponent and El Toro RC B team.

RC Ponent were winners in the U10 category.
