People power wins oil battle THE Spanish Government opposes prospecting for oil off Nerja and Torrox. The Agriculture, Food and Environment Ministry is against exploring for oil in the Alboran Sea, specifically off the coast of Nerja and Torrox, in Malaga Province, and other coastal areas in Granada, it said in a statement. Following several protests organised by local citizens, Nerja and Torrox also rejected the proposal. Prospecting for oil would be detrimental to tourism and the environment in the area, said the councils.

Promoting competitiveness in wine-making sector THE wine-making sector in Malaga Province is to benefit from a competitiveness-promoting project. A joint project launched by the Provincial Council of Malaga and the Industrial Organisation School – known as the Plan for Innovation and Tourism Excellence in Costa del Sol – seeks to improve the winemaking sector in the province by encouraging competitiveness in 25 smalland medium-sized companies.
The project aims at raising awareness about the importance of innovation, marketing tools and communication to adapt products to consumers’ needs and includes a strategy to improve the positioning of wine sector products in the marketplace. The initiative is expected to benefit small- and medium-sized companies as it will improve their products’ visibility, among other things.
