ICONIC STRUCTURE: Nerja’s Balcon de Europa.
Landslide closes walkway NERJA Council has temporarily closed part of the pedestrian walkway along the coast after a landslip beneath the Balcon de Europa. In a statement, Nerja’s representative for infrastructure, Antonio García, said that a ‘small displacement of earth’ was seen to take place underneath the Balcon’s platform, resulting in the walkway below being closed.
The emergency services were informed of the situation. García went on to say that although renovation work in the area had to start immediately, there was no cause for concern. The Balcon de Europa is one of the area’s most iconic structures, featuring heavily in hit Spanish TV show from the 1980s, Verano Azul.
Dutch national known as ‘Tarek’, had owned the bar for the last three years, selling pizzas and hamburgers to locals. The bar was known for being open for long, extended hours. Finding Tarek alive but unresponsive, the young man who discovered the bloody crime scene ran to get help, at that point believing that Tarek may have suffered a fall, or that someone may have hit him on the head. An ambulance was called and paramedics managed to stabilise Tarek despite his critical condition and him having suffered several heart attacks. But Tarek’s injuries were so severe that despite the best efforts of the
paramedic team, he died en route to Malaga’s Carlos Haya Hospital. A post-mortem examination revealed a bullet lodged in the victim’s forehead, and indicated that it had entered his head from the back. Colmenar is a small village, a community where everyone knows everyone. Tarek was described as being a well-liked individual. Motives for the murder remain unclear. The police investigation is working on several theories including robbery and the accounts being mismanaged. Prior to setting up home and a business in Colmenar, Tarek had managed a bar in La Carihuela area of Torremolinos.
