NATURAL GAS: More environmentally friendly gas is coming to the Balearics.

Natural gas €42m investment

NATURAL GAS is to invest over €42 million in the next five years in the Balearics in order to enable the facilities to provide service in 25 municipalities of the islands.

This would service more than 118,000 potential customers.

The company said the investment is intended to enhance the service in the Balearic Islands and offer an energy supply which is “clean, economical and efficient.”

The Government has said it welcomes

these gasification projects in the Balearics and has highlighted the environmental and economic benefits of natural gas.

The Regional Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness has said that shortly they will begin a process of public competition which is open to all companies that want access to gasify a territory.

This will allow natural gas companies to be more competitive in the Islands and more environmentally sustainable.

Oliver thanked the “praiseworthy” step taken by Ledesma who was being questioned over

the Calvia corruption claims, but which bore “no relationship with Marratxi and the municipality” said the mayor.

“He said he was very grateful to the Local Police and Marratxi in general and that he never wanted to harm the image of the Local Police or Marratxi.”

TOUCH of Hollywood glamour is coming to Spain as one of the world’s most important film festivals is set to start.

It may not have the cachet of Cannes, but the San Sebastian International Film Festival is acknowledged to be one of the most important in the annual rota of movie festivals.

It has come a long way since its inception in 1953 when it was for Spanish language films only. By 1955 its remit was extended to include ‘foreign’ movies, specialising in colour, and since then it has never looked back.

Officially it is one of the 14 ‘A’ category competitive film festivals accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations, and has attracted a host of star names over the years.

Biker injured A MOTORCYCLIST was seriously injured when he collided with a car near Sant Jordi, on the outskirts of Palma.

Police have opened an investigation.

Family protection unit BETWEEN January and June this year the Unit for Family Protection (UPF) within Palma’s police force, have given protection to 117 women at risk of being assaulted by their partners or former partners. The UPF also assessed the status of 165 women.

New guidelines put in place by the end of August, aim to make a more rapid and effective response of the Local Police to cases of gender violence assessing their risk levels and acting upon it within 72 hours.

Students fined €720 for education protests THE 44 students who tried to storm the Regional Ministry of Education in 2012 have been convicted of a public disorder offence and fined €720 each.

The prosecution was calling for a prison sentence of a year and a

half for seven of the members who were accused of disturbing public order and grabbing the chief of staff, with the other 37 to receive six months in jail, but the judge ruled fines for all of the students.

Explorations for oil threaten Balearics THE general secretary Francina Armengol, said that a fourth draft survey for oil exploration at sea “threatens the archipelago.”

She has accused the Government of “doing nothing” when the first three projects of oil exploration were carried out in the maritime environment of the Balearics.

Armengol made the announcement after claiming that the President of the Government, Jose Ramon Bauza’s comment about fighting the surveys

was a political tool. Bauza said: “It has become clear that all of society says no to surveys” and that the “Government will do everything possible to prevent them.”

The defence had requested an acquittal on the grounds that the protest was peaceful.

The students gained entry to the building wanting answers and protesting against education cuts which required police intervention.

Balearics top hotel price list THE Balearic Islands rank as the Spanish region where travellers paid the highest price for hotel stays.

According to the Hotel Price Index published by Hoteles.com, the Balearics recorded some of the largest price increases this year. Ibiza topped the list with the average price per night standing at €163, a rise of 22 per cent. Nationally, the average price paid by all travellers is €107 during the first half of 2014.

Mallorca was next in the rankings at €134, an increase of 15 per cent compared to the first six months of last year.

N a recent email, David Cummings made some interesting observations.

“I applaud your sentiments in trying to raise awareness of the bigotry, lack of equality and treatment shown towards women.

“However, I do not accept your view that these opinions belong in the Stone Age, and believe you’re basing this assumption on Hollywood movie images of a caveman with a big club dragging a woman along on her backside by her long hair.

“Your campaign would have more credibility if you were to publish the real cause of women’s problems, which are due purely and simply to religion and the Bible. Stone Age people could neither read nor write, but the Bible is littered with disrespectful attitudes towards women. Take a few moments to check out Genesis 3:16, 1 Timothy 2:8-15, 1 Corinthians 14:34-36, Peter 3:1-7, Ephesians 5:22-24, Colossians 3:18-19, and these are only a small selection, which were not written in the Stone Age. “An interesting quote by Elizabeth Cady Stanton: ‘The Bible and the Church have been the greatest stumbling blocks in the way of woman’s emancipation.’

“I would respectfully suggest to your women readers to search the internet and discover why their god hates them, then they’ll realise why some men have adopted such atrocious attitudes towards them.

“The EWN should stop degrading women by publishing pornographic adverts offering their services. It was not so many years ago that the EWN criticised other publications for printing these ads, but that may have been before the change of ownership.

“You will notice I have also copied this letter to other publications in English, in the hope that they’ll support your campaign and highlight the true reason for women’s inferior status.

“Do any of you really care enough about women to publish the true cause of their problems?

the early hours of the morning in a pulled-down micro-skirt, and a string-tanga hiked up over her hips, does not in any way suggest that she seeks the attention of a member of the opposite sex.

“Why, soon they’ll be suggesting that a push-up padded mini-bra, with three-quarters of it outside of her blouse, is in some way provocative.

“Should she have become accidently legless by the fault of somebody else is of no relevance, and in no way implies that she may have less than 100 per cent moral values. These girls should never be viewed as prostitutes the idea is ridiculous.”

Initially Nicholas’s email may seem negative, but, reading on, it is a positive response to the campaign.

The No Means No campaign continues and we welcome the interaction with the public.

“As a daughter, mother and grandmother, I felt compelled to write to show my support for your campaign.

“The years have shown good changes in the UK to improve equality for women.

The law changed in 1956, and again in 2003, to bring more accountability to men for assaulting women, inside and outside of wedlock. Laws have been introduced to punish the men and women responsible for keeping women in the sex trade, who force them to have sex, living off the money they earn.

“Groups have been formed to help these women when they are strong enough or able to speak out and the police have introduced specific policing units to help female victims of domestic and sexual crimes.

“Equal opportunities and fairness within the workplace have improved substantially in the UK, yet when I read your article of the comments made by the Turkish Deputy Prime Minister and a mayor in Northern Spain, I was saddened that some countries are still behind the times on improving life for women and still have an old mindset; old laws in need of review.

“I choose to live in Spain and hope that eventually the day will come when we as women are treated fairly and that one day we will have the same level of equality not only in Spain but everywhere in the world.”

It’s even hotter THE average temperature so far in September has been higher than August.

The average temperature so far in the Balearics has been 25.5 degrees Celsius.

The August average was 25.2 degrees Celsius.

In August, the average maximum temperature reached was 30.1 degrees while until the first half of September 30.7 degrees was recorded.

New law for pregnancies THE Balearic Parliament has adopted in the plenary session a new law that regulates the creation of a network of support for pregnant women.

The law brought about a heated debate with some criticising it for paying more attention to the defence of the right to abortion than the protection of women.

The deputy PP leader Maria Jose Bauza, stressed

the need to provide pregnant women with information about all the resources they have at their disposal to bring to fruition a healthy pregnancy.

However, the deputy PSIB, Conxa Obrador, said the law “does not provide anything that is not already covered” and criticised the lack of resources to support women, compounded by cuts by the PP.

Flooding concerns for the residents of Alaro RESIDENTS in Alaro are calling for the authorities to construct a stormwater system in Calle Solleric.

For eight years residents complain of flooding and damage to homes in the area and say the city is ignoring

demands of neighbours with the road still without an adequate system to remove rainwater and redirect its flow.

A commitment was made by the city to carry out the works, but that has yet to be fulfilled.

Man arrested with fake gun in Palma BOUNCERS at a bar in Palma who were threatened by a man with a fake gun wrestled him to the ground.

Curator’s memories of a deserted Calvia RENOWNED curator and resident of Palmanova, Calvia, Ferran Cano, is well known for his role with gallery ‘4 Gats’ in Palma and Barcelona.

Now, he has spoken to a Spanish newspaper about his memories of the town which is a mecca for holidaymakers and party goers from across Europe: “The first time I came was when I was seven or eight-years-old.

There were no paved roads, no highways. There was a pier used for fishing. It was idyllic. As the largest beach in Santa Ponsa, it was all pine forest.”

Today, more than 50,000 people live

in Calvia but when Cano first visited there few houses had no proper electricity supply: “Despite all, it was a paradise. It was elitist. But not in the sense that millionaires live. What happens is that there was no mass tourism. There were very few tourists then.”

He recalled how mass tourism began in the 1970’s in Calvia and Magaluf with the creation of hotels: “I remember with sadness, but also with unconsciousness. There was a view that tourism was going to save everyone. Do not forget that Mallorca was poor.”

Virgin Atlantic plane makes emergency landing on island A PLANE made an emergency landing at Palma’s Son San Joan airport.

The Virgin Atlantic plane was flying from Johannesburg to London

when a passenger fell ill with a heart complaint.

Emergency protocol was activated and the pilot landed in Mallorca.

The passenger was removed from the plane

at 4.30am and taken to Espases hospital in Palma for treatment.

The aircraft took off an hour later for London, where it landed a little over two hours late.

Restaurant fire in Palma FIRE in restaurant Casa Gallega de Palma forced emergency services to close the surrounding streets while the fire service brought the smoke and flames under control.

Several fire service units attended the scene, and ambulances treated several people for smoke inhalation at the scene. According to initial reports, nobody needed transferring to hospital. The smoke from the fire affected a number of local businesses, requiring evacuation.

A spokesman for the Palma fire service stated no investigation for the source of the fire would be carried out until the fire was fully extinguished.

SCHOOL: It’s time for the children to return.

First day CHILDREN have been returning to school all over Mallorca, with children excited to see friends again or to start a new chapter in their young lives.

In Lloseta more than 500 youngsters have returned to school. One primary school student said: “What I am most excited about is seeing my friends and I know what teacher I have this year. But I am sad the holidays are over.” Teachers at Puig school in Lloseta were enthusiastic about the

return describing the school year as starting “with more enthusiasm than ever.”

Many parents accompany their children to school on their first day back or for some on their first day ever at school. “I went to this school and I wanted my son to come here,” said one mother.

Overseeing the children, and reining in some of the expected overexcitement, Antonio Muñoz Llobera, Puig’s headmistress, said children adapt very quickly.

Director’s movie in line for Oscar DANIEL MONZON returned to Mallorca, where he was born, to present his film El Niño which is taking Hollywood audiences by storm.

El Niño has been selected as one of three movies to represent Spain in the 87th

edition of the Academy Awards for the Best Foreign Language Film category.

As you would expect, there were plenty of congratulations for a job well done, whilst others clamoured to have their photograph taken with the

filmmaker of the moment.

Daniel Monzon enthused: “The truth is that I am very excited. I can enter the Oscar race with a 33.3 per cent chance of winning and El Niño competes with two other interesting movies.” Monzon is

“especially excited” to be on the red carpet in Hollywood.

“The Oscar party is fun,” added Monzon, “Hopefully we will go.”

Action movie El Niño tells the story of Jesus, a small-time drug trafficker working in the

Gibraltar Straits. The film also stars British actor Ian McShane.

The movie has sliced through any Spanish competition this year in terms of revenue generated, scoring €2.9 million in its first weekend.

Trafico thieves are arrested TWO men, aged 31 and 46, have been arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery in the Trafico vehicle licencing office in Palma.

The two men, both Italians with extensive criminal records in their own country, were caught by a member of the public after they broke a window to gain entry to the building.

The men fled, but police began investigations, discovering that the men had allegedly committed other offences previously.

After the arrest, National Police retrieved various false documents as well as tools to aid in robberies. After the investigation, police have suggested the break-in at Trafico was in order to gain material for forging documents.

The organisers of indie music festival, Solar Fest, said: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the British band Crystal Fighters today announced that it has cancelled their part in the concert to be held tonight at Solar Fest Mallorca.

“We, the event organisers now announce the addition to the line-up of the group LA.” At the time of going to press, the reasons for Marongiu’s death are unknown.

Ses Minyones charity fundraiser THE Calvia Beach Fest was held on Sunday by Pirates Beach Bar and the 41 club alongside Calvia Council, in aid of Ses Minyones Orphanage.

This proved to be a great success where a staggering amount of around â‚Ź5,000 was raised for The Orphanage.

All funds raised will go towards school books and clothing for the 33 children aged five - 12 living in the orphanage.

There were market stalls, live music, bouncy castle, face painting, water balloon stocks, wish balloons, raffles and many more fundraising activities going on throughout the day.

Outrage at plans to shoot 140 wolves

WOLF: Not protected.

THE shooting of 140 wolves in the area of Castilla-Leon is due to be implemented in the next few months, as the government has increased the hunting quota for Iberian wolves in the province.

Unlike Portugal, the Iberian wolf is not protected in Spain, therefore giving Spanish authorities the right to authorise the hunting of these animals.

Alberto Fernández Gil, a specialist and author of several books about these wolves said, ”any indiscriminate, non-selective control of wolf populations not only bears the risk of destabilising existing pack structures (e.g. by killing high ranking or alpha individuals) forming a vital prerequisite for the survival of packs, but it may most likely spur more wolf attacks on livestock as they require less skilful hunters for making a kill.”

The hunting quota on wolves has been increased amid worries from Spain’s livestock owners over their own animals, due to Spain’s current recession.

Manchester drug gang is arrested in Magaluf NINE Mancunians have been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Mallorca’s most prominent holiday destination of Magaluf.

The six men and three women, who are all

believed to originate from the Manchester area, were arrested following an investigation launched by the Guardia Civil in conjunction with Spain’s National Crime Agency.

A quantity of various drugs - including cocaine, crystal meth and ecstasy were seized in the raid, along with €24,000 cash and drug paraphernalia.

The nine were placed under arrest on suspicion of belonging to a criminal organisation and drug trafficking. In total, eight locations were raided by

the authorities, and although most were located outside the centre, one of the houses from where the dealers operated was in Punta Ballena, on Magaluf’s main strip.

Police in Mallorca have noticed a steep rise in the amount of drug related crime during the summer, and pin it down to the ready buyers that can be found amongst tourists.

The authorities are determined to clamp down on drug-related crime in the region, especially after the recent bad press.

ALGARROBICO HOTEL: Could now be finished after licence was declared legal.

Hotel to finish THE controversial Algarrobico hotel that has caused an environmental storm could be finished after a legal judgement.

The court of administrative disputes in Almeria has formally notified the town of Carboneras that the July judgement of the Superior Court of Justice of Andalucia (TSJA) was lawful and the building licence is now valid.

A panel of judges ruled in July that the Algarrobico building licence from 2003 was legally issued, overturning previous rulings. With the licence now being usable, Azata del Sol (the hotel promoter) could in principle restart the construction of the hotel in the Cabo de Gata natural park.

Sources said that this process lets Carboneras know that the judgement is final.

The history of the half-built hotel has been a colourful one, with the 2003 building licences being deemed either legal or illegal in various court decisions. A demolition order was proposed in October 2011. Secretary of State for the Ministry of the Environment, Teresa Ribera, backed the order at the time and referred to the hotel as a “symbol which should disappear as soon as possible.”

N recent weeks the world has watched, powerless, as three brave men have been butchered by monsters.

The murders of James Foley, Steven Sotloff and David Cawthorne Haines have shaken us in a way that the deaths of thousands in Iraq and Syria did not, but maybe now, finally, our governments will do something about it.

Over the last year, ISIL has brought nothing but instability, terror and unimaginable bloodshed to Syria and Iraq.

Countless have been killed at the hands of these animals under the guise of an ideology that has no place in any religion.

If a terrorist organisation can indiscriminately kill journalists and aid workers, then nobody is safe.

Any one of us could be next.

James Foley and Steven Sotloff were journalists, just trying to do their job and report the truth to the

world. They were killed because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

David Cawthorne Haines was an aid worker providing food, medicine and comfort to those who needed it.

There is no reason on earth as to why he should have been killed except for pure sadism.

Alan Henning, ISIL’s next victim, is a taxi driver who decided to drive aid to Syria. His life, and the lives of his family, has been turned upside down because he refused to sit idly by whilst others suffered.

We cannot stay silent while he suffers. Do nothing and we are as guilty as those who are committing these barbaric crimes.

How many more must die before our governments act? Why have they still not done anything?

This uncontrolled violence must be brought to an end, and those with the power to do so must act now.

R.L. (Costa Blanca) A. Legally, you have the right to demand that your neighbour trims away any portion of his trees which overhang your garden. Further, if his trees or their roots damage the separating wall, the neighbour is liable to pay for it. If he refuses, then you have a problem. You can go to court against your neighbour and you will surely win your case. Nevertheless, the expense and time involved may turn out to be greater than the cost of having the trees trimmed yourself.

THERE has been a remarkable shift in the demography of Mediterranean Spain over a very short time. By the time I settled here in 2008 the region between Gibraltar and Valencia was under British occupation.

Most businesses set out their stalls accordingly.

A Spanish restaurateur in Torrevieja explained to me that he could survive if unable to speak Spanish, but the ability to communicate in English kept him solvent.

As I strolled esplanades the second language heard spoken was English.

This is no longer the case. According to national statistics 90,000 (22.8 per cent) Brits abandoned Spain in 2013. How many others have since died is anyone’s guess.

Spain has lost much of its appeal as a viable place to work or set up a business.

The Russian presence is widespread, but their being treated as the pariahs of Europe has reduced Russian tourism and investment in Europe by 10 to 40 per cent

depending on country.

Britain has lost its dominance. The Costa communities are now a blend of many nationalities. Businesses now have little choice but to modify their approach to cater for a broader church.

Most enterprising restaurants now offer their menu in Russian.

At the onset of what I had hoped would be a wonderful evening’s entertainment the night’s performer appeared. Having seen Simon a year or so earlier I groaned.

OPINION & COMMENT

Thanks to all good Samaritans ON Tuesday, September 2, I was in Garrucha waiting for the bus to take me to Mojacar.

I suffered a dizzy spell and was helped by a number of people.

The owner of a café brought me into his premises and made me comfortable. An off-duty nurse assisted me and insisted I needed to go to the hospital. I did not want to make a fuss but she said it was necessary, so she called for an ambulance. An English couple cooled me down with a fan, which was most welcome.

A lady called Rosalie (I did not get her surname) stayed with me throughout my ordeal. She accompanied me in the ambulance and stayed with me at the hospital, translating my symptoms to the doctor. She also insisted on accompanying me to my home to make sure I was safe. Rosalie, you were an angel.

I am led to believe bystanders at the bus stop also assisted.

I wish to convey my thanks to all who came to my rescue. I was so grateful and your kindness was much appreciated. May God bless you all.

Get learning REGARDING the Language hurdle letter, what would anyone expect at any call centre in Britain?

Would we expect them to speak Spanish? Of course not, so why do people here expect staff to speak English? If people are not prepared to learn the language, then they should leave.

I would say the same to anyone who wishes to settle in Britain: learn English or get out. In Britain we speak English and in Spain they speak Spanish: where is the difficulty?

People who make no effort to learn are ignorant, arrogant and an embarrassment. It really is not difficult to learn, we have done it with absolutely no previous language experience, so just try.

SQUIRREL NUTKIN has dual nationality! I never expected to find squirrels in Spain but despite the current high temperatures this one regularly visits the pine in our R Squires, Altea (Alicante) garden in Cap Negret.

Prickly subject THIS year the Mojacar area has seen a plague of tiny greenishwhite flies. They attack the prickly pears which are part of our traditional landscape and act as natural fire breaks.

They have spread into our gardens and are killing other plants and may even threaten vegetables if left unchecked.

They are so small they can penetrate mosquito screens and infest the inside of our houses after dark.

Why has there been no action by the authorities? If the cacti are killed off the nature of our area will change drastically.

Free speech I HAVE read Your Say letters on a weekly basis for several years now. Readers write in, air their views and comments and give their honest opinion on certain subjects.

However, every so often along comes an egotistic, selfopinionated, arrogant person and in the Euro Weekly News’s case that person is Bill Campbell.

The arrogance of this man beggars belief. I think it’s in his genes, handed down from generation to generation by ancestors who committed the worst atrocity ever recorded on British soil and then tried to deny it ever happened.

Herbal remedies THANK you for this week’s article

by Dick Handscombe (Herbs can improve your diet and health). It was one of the most interesting and informative newspaper articles I’ve read in years.

Here in Almond Court we’re lucky enough to have much of what he recommends: a peaceful garden area with a pristine swimming pool, an immaculate lawn and stately trees for admiration.

We have a shady arbour amid shrubs and aromatic herbs for contemplation and a raised terrace with tables and parasols for conversation.

To cap it all we’re just an hour’s drive away from Guadalest with its pure mountain air for invigoration.

Update On The Spanish Tax Reform The income tax rates and thresholds will change next year, under reforms aimed primarily at lower income individuals and families. There are some other changes which may affect you.

The Spanish government released its draft tax legislation in June. In August it approved three laws which include some additional changes to the original proposals.

The reforms will apply from 1st January 2015. However the laws still need to approved by parliament and so may change.

Income tax The current seven income tax bands will be reduced to five, and tax rates reduced over 2015 and 2016.

The minimum tax rate is reduced from 24.75% to 20% in 2015 and 19% in 2016. The top rate will fall from 52% to 47% next year and 45% the following one. However the new top rate will apply from income over €60,000, as opposed to €300,000 as currently.

In particular, taxpayers with annual income of less than €24,000 will see their income tax reduced by 23.5%, while those earning under €30,000 will pay 19.34% less tax.

Contrary to the original proposals, the 60% deduction against net rental income for residents is not reduced to 50%.

Savings income Currently, income up to €6,000 is taxed at 21%; income between €6,000 and €24,000 at 25%, and the excess at 27%.

Under the proposals, the rate for the first tax band will reduce to 20% in 2015 and 19% in 2016; income between €6,000 and €50,000 will be taxed at 22% and 21% respectively, and anything over €50,000 at 24% then 23%.

Capital gains tax Under current rules, gains arising on assets held for less than a year are subject to the normal scale rates of up to 52%.

From 2015, all capital gains, regardless of the holding period, will be taxed at the savings rates as above.

One of the most significant additional changes is the exemption for individuals over the age of 65 on all capital gains, provided the proceeds are used to buy a pension annuity. There

appears to be no legislation to restrict main home relief for over 65s in any way, including any requirement to buy an annuity.

Indexation will no longer apply on the sale of a property from 1st January 2015.

Succession tax Succession tax affects almost everyone living in Spain, and many do not realise how much it can impact their heirs, depending on their circumstances.

Unfortunately there are no proposed changes in the tax reform and draft legislation, to ease the burden for families.

In September the European Court of Justice ruled that Spain has failed to fulfil its obligations regarding succession and gift tax.

Basically, by allowing differences in the tax treatment between resident and non-resident beneficiaries, they have breached the EU treaties.

The main aim of the tax reforms is to help those on lower

incomes, so those with savings and investments need specialist tax planning to protect their capital, income and assets from tax. The reforms do not address wealth tax, and we need to wait and see what, if anything, the government does with regards succession tax following the court ruling. It is important to seek expert and personalised advice to establish what would work best for you in the short and longterm.

Theatrics over some goldfish is quite a saga LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT

KNOW we are a nation of animal lovers, but the theatrical goldfish saga that came to light last week really did tip the scales.

(Scales geddit? Suit yerself).

Apparently in a recent modern day interpretation of Richard III, a member of the audience was ‘horrified’ by what she considered cruelty to a goldfish! The lady in question, who was a member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), was sitting in the front row.

In a letter to the producers, she complained that when the Duke of Clarence’s life

was dispatched in a tank of water, the lives of the goldfish swimming around in it were being placed in peril of injury or death! You really couldn’t make it up.

In the letter the group insisted that goldfish were intelligent sensitive animals that possess ‘long term memories and complex social structures.’ Despite the fact that the fish were supplied by a reputable company and cared for under RSPCA conditions, such was the onslaught from these people, that for a bit of peace, the company has actually withdrawn them from the show (I bet their agent wasn’t too happy with that!).

I mean give us a break.

On a more serious note, the tragic kennel fire which took the lives of 53 dogs last week was indeed a heartrending event.

However, the more than £1 million (€1.26 million) that poured in within days was I felt a little excessive.

I wonder how much was donated by the public to help the children and refugees starving and dining in the hell holes of the Middle East in the same short period?

Nowhere near that figure I’ll be bound. Makes ya think dunnit?

I haven’t broached on the

‘Scottish day of reckoning’ yet, mainly because I didn’t want to upset my Scottish friends. But as this piece comes out on the day of the referendum, I just thought I’d throw in my three penn’orth. I hope everyone votes with their head and not their hearts. We really are sorry for Bannockburn. We really would have cheered for Scotland in the World Cup assuming you’d been in it!

OVER the past few months I have been interviewing Lamia from House Sit Match on my radio show at Talk Radio Europe (every Saturday at 10.am). There is no doubt the system works. If you want to be a pet sitter or want a pet sitter contact Lamia.

As the owner I am compelled to have a licence and was required to take a medical examination to see if I

My licence clearly states they have to be muzzled in all public places and that I am the only person that is able to walk my dogs and only one dog at a time. Each dog has a public insurance for half a million euros.

In the next few weeks I am taking a break and whilst I am away Boy Boy and Sheba will be having their holiday at Stefanie’s Kennels Estepona (http://stefanieskennels. com/) where they will be safe, well cared for and if there is a health problem they have immediate assistance from a vet on the premises. I am also within the law.

For those that do not come under ‘the Dangerous Dog Act’ there is an excellent choice of kennels and pet sitters.

In a few days’ time I will send my dogs for a full medical examination to ensure their teeth and gums are in order and in general they are in good health. My dogs will also be vaccinated for Kennel Cough which seems to be going around again. I do strongly recommend all dogs and cats are vaccinated each year against kennel cough. Why is deworming your pet so important?

THE term deworming is commonly used for the treatment against intestinal worms in your pet.

Dogs and cats, but also many other pets like horses and tortoises, can be infested with intestinal worms. These include roundworms, tapeworms and hook and whipworms. Each one of these has their own cycle and uses different hosts to survive.

Some of these worms can also be transmitted to humans and that is why deworming your pet, which you cuddle and kiss, is so important, to be done at least every three months. Roundworm eggs are passed in the feces, where they develop into infective larvae. These are consumed by

rodents where the larvae nestle in their tissues. The cat or dog will either eat this rodent or eat grass infested with larvae from the feces. These larvae migrate through their bodies to then be coughed up and swallowed into the intestinal tract where they develop to adult roundworms and produce eggs.

Puppies and kittens can also get these larvae through the milk and have worms as early as two weeks of age. Children playing in sandboxes where cats have buried their feces, can get these roundworms.

Tapeworms do not lay eggs.

They grow in segments and each segment that breaks off is a new worm. These proglottids hatch in

an intermediate host like the rabbit and rodents. Our dogs and cats get infested by eating these hosts, eating feces or grass with proglottids, or by eating fleas off their bodies that have eaten the proglottids.

One of the tapeworms is the echinococcus.

Echinococcos in humans is very dangerous.

Cysts can develop in the liver, the brain, the unborn baby etc.

ITH the summer almost over, and you’re maybe looking at all those snaps or selfies taken on the beach or in the pool, it’s always instructive to look back at past holidays and ask yourself what made certain ones stand out. Perhaps for completely the wrong reasons they were travel nightmares?

One of my first was many years ago as a student on a Greyhound bus travelling around the USA. A youth had a Sony Discman playing a compilation CD so loud I’m amazed his eardrums didn’t burst. Five hours in, one passenger cracked, leaned over

TRAVEL NIGHTMARES: What was your worst experience? and casually cut through the headphone wire. We all gave him a silent round of applause.

Another nightmare, shortly after my return, was standing nose-to-armpit for two hours in

the dark on a static London tube on a suffocatingly hot summer’s afternoon. That bit was just about bearable, but an American lady piping up that we should all introduce ourselves was tortuous and, in seconds, had all the passengers on the verge of throwing up.

And what about flights? Let me count the ways. I recall a 13-hour flight seated next to an engineer called Arnold with an obsessional passion for talking about his work. It’s the closest I’ve ever come to violence against another person by means of a moist towelette and a bag of nuts.

And Ryanair? Where to begin and how much time do you have? Cramped into seats smaller than those on the average bus, every available space covered with adverts for their booze and raffle tickets, continual announcements which should have been safety announcements, but were adverts for their booze and

raffle tickets. Even if you tried to get some sleep, you were woken up by a hostess trying to sell you… more booze and raffle tickets.

Now I admit I don’t like flying. Ever since a bad experience as a child in a turbo prop to storm-bound Malta (the nosewheel bursting halfway down the runway upon finally landing ... that was fun ... sparks flying and smoke everywhere) when the pilot announced: “We’ll soon be landing at Luqa airport. Or quite near it.” Actually, “quite near” turned out to be 200 miles away in another continent Tunis, North Africa. What’s your worst travel experience, I wonder?

HERE is not a lot I envy when I compare the lives of young people today to that of our postwar generation.

I do wish them all the luck in the world. I do wonder what their memories will hold for them when they retire.

Will there be a yearning for what has passed and is then irrecoverable? Will young people when old cherish as a gift the evocation of their younger lives? I hope so, but somehow I am not too sure they will.

Yes, I am aware of modern advances in all fields that were as it happens largely the fruits of my generation.

Were we deprived by our not having much of what youngsters have today?

Not a bit of it.

We ate what we grew or caught, watched in awe as the Empress of Canada was consumed in flames.All this and more before I celebrated 10 candles on my cake.

The young today: I hope their memories are as good.

Having three floors housing more than 60,000 books, the shop offers all sorts of books from antique, to rare and collectable, in fact everything a serious book lover could want.

There is a truly Dickensian feel to the labyrinthine shop as customers browse there is no telling what literary gem them may discover nestling on the shelves.

As well as individual tomes there are whole sets of rare collections, as well as many antique maps from all over the world, dating back as far as the 16th century.

He is always on the look-out for old and collectable books and will make a cash settlement on the spot.

FINE BOOKS: Not just another book shop.

Owner, Rodney Browne brought his love of books to Mallorca 7 years ago.

If you have wondered what that treasured book is worth take it in for an honest appraisal and valuation.

He is particularly interested in old originals, signed collectables, first editions, old atlases and prints.

He is also interested in full collections by an author, although not so much in the modern holiday-read type of book.

Over the years he has bought and collected many treasured books, one in particular being a signed copy of Queen Victoria’s own book given to the Vicar of Balmoral

Commentary by Moneycorp EUR The euro had a pretty good week.

Initial concerns about the European Central Bank’s ‘quantitative easing lite’ faded as the limits of its stimulus programme became clearer. And investors were distracted from the euro by the explosions across the Channel, where it began to look more likely that Scotland would vote for independence. The net result was a half-cent gain for the euro against the pound. It held steady against the US dollar.

Are some people’s brains wired to make them want to eat?

PEOPLE who are more obese are more tempted to eat because their brain is wired differently.

That’s the view of US researchers who found that obese people had a greater level of dopamine activity in the region of the brain which controls habit.

Cooking smells or even food adverts have a stronger pull releasing the dopamine and making it harder to control a healthy weight. Dopamine is the ‘pleasure chemical’ which influences reward, motivation and habit formation.

Most drugs cause the release of dopamine, so it is

thought to contribute to why some can be addictive.

U.S. researchers found that obese people tended to have greater dopamine activity in the region of the brain that controls habit and less activity in the region of the brain that controls reward.

One expert said: “While we cannot say whether obesity is a cause or an effect of these patterns of dopamine activity, eating based on unconscious habits rather than conscious choices could make it harder to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, especially when appetising food cues are practically everywhere.”

Average Brit spends nearly a year hungover THE average person spends nearly a year of their life hungover.

Macmillan Cancer Support surveyed 2,000 British adults and found that one in 14 will have more than 3,000 hangovers in their life time.

An estimated 315 days of their lives are lost as a result of over drinking.

The survey found that people from the north of Britain were more likely to suffer, with 22 per cent of people likely to have more than four hangovers each month compared to 15 per cent of southerners.

According to a comparative study of the health systems in EU countries published by the Ministry of Health, Spaniards visit a doctor on average 7.4 times per year.

That figure has fallen compared to 2001 when the number of visits was 8.7 time a year.

Spain comes in fifth place with Belgium, with the ranking led by Luxembourg whose residents visit their GP an average 11.8 times a year. Cyprus, Finland and Malta had the lowest figure with just two visits per year.

Together with the run up to the 2016 Rio Olympics Brazilian influence is resonating dramatically in the beauty and personal care category - and new research from market analysts Mintel reveals just how much influence it has.

Only 10 per cent of recent skincare launches inspired by Brazilian lifestyles and ingredients were actually released in Brazil, while 90 per cent of new Brazilian inspired products were launched in the rest of the world.

This influence is seen largely on the ingredients platform, with products featuring one of four key claims such as ‘Brazilian,’ ‘from Brazil,’ ‘sourced from Brazil’ or ‘inspired by Brazil.’

And it seems Brazilian haircare is also inspiring

the global market. While previously the vast majority of haircare product launches specifying the use of saltfree formulations were found in the Brazilian market, this is slowly changing.

So far in 2014, Brazil has accounted for 65 per cent and the rest of the world for 35 per cent of such product launches, compared to 95 per cent and 5 per cent respectively in 2011.

MOST weeks I am asked by someone ‘Where can we buy organic/ ecological vegetables and fruit? It is not as easy to buy them here as it was in England, France, Germany or Switzerland?’

Unfortunately these people who moved to Spain for a healthy lifestyle are correct.

Except for a few regions, particularly in Andalucia, it is not as if Spain has a significant presence in European organic farming.

But recognise that an olive is a fruit and the growth of ecological olive oil is a major factor in the

growth statistics for Spain.

Essentially five factors make it difficult to source ecological fruit and vegetables.

• The relatively few farmers who are prepared to produce products without using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and weed killers, genetically modified seeds or growth hormones. The latter especially in the production of meats and eggs.

• The fact that it is easier for farmers to export 80 per cent of their produce in bulk rather than sell locally in Spain.

• Many local small scale agriculturalists, some of whom grew things by organic methods even if not officially registered, gave up with the

central buying, and the ease of making a living by getting involved in the construction industry or tourism.

• The complexity of regulations involved in registering to be an organic grower and packer and seller of organic products.

• Spain not using all available European Community grants for the expansion of organic growing because matching the money available on the 50:50 basis required by Brussels was not seen as a national priority compared with the assistance required by all growers especially for damage to crops by storms, drought and in some cases irrigation water shortages.

If you are lucky you will have local organic growers selling at farmers markets or operating weekly box schemes with boxes for pick up or delivery.

The latter box system is growing but it has a long way to go to meet demand.

So for most of us the best solution is to grow your own. It is not difficult, as seeds, plantlets, ecological fertilisers, insecticides and fungicides are relatively easy to find compared with 15 years ago when we started and were thought to me mad by local chemical enthusiasts who tried to impress us with one kilo tomatoes and cabbage size lettuces each with large surface areas for chemical contaminations.

Most importantly you do not need much space as much of a family’s vegetable needs can be met by growing your favourite veggies in builder’s buckets, raised beds, growing tables or 20 square metre veggie plots.

A copy of ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain,’ or ‘Apartment Gardening - Mediterranean Style,’ will soon get you on your way and avoiding early day problems.

Between January and August, Madrid Council granted 35 per cent more licences for the construction of new homes than in the same eightmonth period in 2013, said Deputy Mayor Enrique Nuñez at a press conference.

BUYING a home in Spain is cheaper than elsewhere in the EU. As reported by an annual analysis on Spain’s realestate market conducted

by Deloitte, the percentage of income spent by households on mortgage payments - rate of effort has been steadily falling in

recent years and currently stands at 33 per cent, as a result of the decline in house prices registered since the outbreak of the economic crisis.

Moreover, the average home price in Spain is 4.4 times the individual gross salary, compared to many countries in the European

Union where prices are 6.1 times the individual gross wage and Britain and France, where the ratio is 8.5 and 7.9 times the individual income.

For the fourth year and compared to the rest of the country, homeowners in Barcelona and Guipuzcoa have had to spend a larger

percentage of their income on mortgage payments, given the high price of housing in those provinces.

In contrast, buying properties in La Rioja, Lleida and Pontevedra is more accessible, since the rate of effort is lower than 30 per cent.

The rest of the Spanish regions saw a decrease in housing prices, with the sharpest drop registered in Navarra (-6.1 per cent), Extremadura (-3.5 per cent), Aragon (-2.3 per cent), Asturias (2 per cent), Castilla y Leon (-1.9 per cent), La Rioja (-1.7 per cent), Castilla-La Mancha (-1.6 per cent), the Basque Country (1.4 per cent) and the Canary Islands (-0.2 per cent).

According to eleconomista.es, the price of resale housing increased by 0.2 per cent between April and June, compared to 2013. This is the highest rate since the fourth quarter in 2007. On the other hand, the prices of new homes registered an increase of 1.9 per cent, which is the first positive rate since October-December 2008.

Non-EU flagged yachts now free to charter in the Balearics

It states that a charter licence can be obtained provided there is a lack of available EU-flagged with similar characteristics.

“This superyacht industry has a massive economic trickle-down effect across the whole tourism sector, and Spain must wise up to that before the 2015 Mediterranean season gets under way,” Vila concluded.

There will be boats of between 14 and 30 metres long, which will arrive at RCNP in late September. The regatta itself will run from October 1 to 4.

British boatbuilders Oyster have entrusted the organisation of the regatta to the staff of the RCNP for the 10th season in a row.

A large number of superyachts use the islands as a port of call in the summer season (147-metre Rising Sun, 147-metre Prince Abdulaziz, 115-metre Pelorus, 96-metre Limitless, 88-metre Musashi and 78-metre ‘iYacht’ Venus, to name but a few, have all passed through in 2014) with plenty more choosing Palma as a refit location in the winter.

The Balearics have some of the best bays, beaches, beach clubs and turquoise waters in the entire Med and are popular with ‘normal’ families through to A-List celebrities.

120,000 Porsche cars delivered to customers worldwide STUTTGART based sports car manufacturer Porsche has handed over 120,000 new vehicles to customers the world over from January to August 2014.

That is an increase of 12 per cent in comparison to the same period last year.

In August alone the company delivered around 15,000 vehicles a jump of 30 per cent in comparison to the same month last year.

Bernhard Maier, Member of the Executive Board Sales and

Marketing of Porsche AG, said: “Over the course of this year, we have achieved quite a strong growth worldwide. We posted two-digit growth in Europe as well despite existing uncertainties in several markets.

“The new Cayenne will provide further stimulus for growth during the next few months and support our qualitative growth strategy.”

So far this year, Porsche has recorded similar growth rates in its three biggest sales

regions. The sports car maker has announced an increase of 16 per cent in Europe: a little less than 39,000 new cars were delivered to customers. In China, more than 28,000 vehicles were handed over in the period from January to August 2014, outmatching the figure of the previous year by 15 per cent.

In the US market,
