Airport arrest THE alleged perpetrator of the brutal beating of a young Irishman in Santa Ponsa has been arrested as he was about to board a flight.

Catalonia Day MORE than 200 people in Mallorca took part in Catalonia Day, calling for support for independence and the right to decide their political future.

MALLORCA welcomed more than 3.7 million passengers through Son Sant Joan airport last month.

The record number of passengers is a 5.5 per cent increase compared to August 2013, with 5.6 per cent more operations carried out; a total of 25,592 flights.

The domestic market continued its recovery with a growth of 11.1 per cent over the past month, adding more than half a million passengers, whilst the international market also grew by

4.5 per cent, with over 3.2 million passengers using the airport in the same period.

With the increase in the number of passengers, it is no surprise that hotel capacity has also experienced a rise.

In the last five years, Palma hotels have seen occupation levels increase by 42 per cent.

“Since 2009, there has been a drastic change in this area,” said President of the Hotel Association of Palma and Cala Mayor, Javier Vich.

He pointed out the proliferation of small luxury establishments, and said that improvements and investments in trade and supply had brought more visitors.

“If the average occupancy in summer was 60 per cent in 2009, this year we have reached 85 per cent on average, although some hotels are registering full from Thursday to Sunday. Palma is improving its position nicely and the markets are responding,” Vich concluded.

SEPTEMBER SALES: Staying on as results were disappointing in August.

Offers continue as sales decrease

SIXTY PER CENT of traders say they are keeping the sales on in September after reporting “disappointing” sales in August.

Just 18 per cent of Mallorcan traders of clothing, footwear and accessories exceeded sales recorded in August 2013 which broke against the industry expectations expressed at the beginning of the sales campaign. Meanwhile, 22 per cent of store owners said they have suffered a decline in turnover, while 60 per cent sold around the same last month as in August 2013.

Compared to last July, more than half of the merchants (54 per cent) sold less in August, compared to 20 per cent that noted an improvement in turnover.

The Association of Small and Medium Sized Commerce of Mallorca, Pimeco, said their survey amongst traders noted that the average score given regarding the overall assessment of sales and customer traffic was 5.2 out of 10, lower than the 5.5 in July.

Pimeco said it was “critical situation” for traders.

Market leader in boating REGISTRATIONS of boats increased 27.16 per cent between January and August in the Balearics.

According to the National Marine Association, there has been 515 vessels registered so far this year, compared to 405 in the same period of 2013.

The data shows the Islands to occupy one of the top boating

markets, having a market share of 14.65 per cent.

Vessels between 12 and 16 metres in length grew 26.56 per cent with 81 registrations. Vessels up to eight metres in length, have the largest market share with 3,169 registered boats registered, 370 more than a year ago.

Jet skis and foldable inflatable boats are two of the fastest

growing segments, with an increase of 54.85 per cent compared to the number registered during the first half of 2013.

The rental industry is also growing. With 340 boats (including jet skis) registered for rental use, between January and August this year, the rental market grew by 62.68 per cent.

Uni exams A TOTAL of 962 students in the Balearic Islands have enrolled in entrance examinations for university; 790 in Mallorca. The exams started on Tuesday and continue today (Thursday).

A MAN, aged 62, has been sentenced to three years in prison for shooting at the Guardia Civil after being chased by two officers in Sant Llorenç des Cardassar.

Celebrating all things Catalan

ODAY (Thursday) is the National Day of Catalonia. Traditionally a day to celebrate the region’s heroes, it has also become a focus point for many people to demonstrate for Catalan independence.

All around the region, and particularly in the capital Barcelona, there will be events and demonstrations planned to mark the day, which is held on September 11 every year.

Organisations and political parties will lay flowers and wreaths at monuments to local heroes throughout the region. There will be political demonstrations, many calling for independence, and meetings in memory of the solidiers who defended Barcelona during the war of the Spanish Succession.

The day marks the anniversary of the Bourbon forces’ recapture of Barcelona on September 11, 1714, after a siege. When the Autonomous Region of Catalonia was set up in 1979 one of its first acts was to declare September 11 the Day of Catalonia.

It was to mark the painful memories of the defeat and loss of freedoms that happened in 1714. So in 1980, September 11 was officially a public holiday for the first time.

Many shops and businesses in the region will be closed, but it is not a holiday in other parts of Spain.

September is still summer in Mallorca SUMMER remains in Mallorca. After record numbers of passengers travelling through the airport in August, industry experts are expecting the season to continue throughout September with higher hotel occupancy and levels of spending.

President of the Hotel Association of Playa de Palma, Francisco Marin, said: “It is the most profitable month and where more tourism spending is generated. We expect hotel occupation will be similar to last year.”

Jaume Horrach, president of the Hotel Association of Alcudia and Can Picafort agrees: “September is characterised by its profitability and that the type of tourist is different from August with more Scandinavians with a higher spending power.”

The two major source of tourists are the German and British market. Average occupancy across Mallorca is believed to be around 90 per cent this month, but in the last week will fall drastically.

Calvia corrupt police investigation continues INVESTIGATORS are still analysing emails and statements of witnesses and defendants in the case of the corrupt police of Calvia.

As reported in last week’s Euro Weekly News, Calvia’s Chief of Police, Jose Antonio Navarro Munoz

was arrested and remanded in custody, along with two other officers, on charges of extortion.

They are alleged to have blackmailed Magaluf business owners into giving them money. Another line of enquiry suggests that

some agents were warning owners their premises were about to be inspected and could therefore avoid any penalties for noise, loud music or over capacity in the venue.

The three arrested have been remanded in custody.

Balearic internet prices too high A SURVEY has shown that 96 per cent of residents in the Balearic Islands, think the price of Internet, both ADSL and fibre optic systems, is very high.

That’s according to a study by Rastreator.com to find out what consumer behaviour and perception towards the telephone and Internet service offered in Spain.

More than 42 per cent of those surveyed say they will change their provider in the coming months, of which 52.4 per cent said it is because they are not happy with their current company, 33.3 per cent said they will take advantage of September deals and 14.3 per cent said they change annually.

The poster was advertising a weekend fiesta and short film contest but complaints were made about the depiction of women.

Old pipes lead to water faults PALMA city centre residents were left without water for several hours after damage to the supply of drinking water.

The council said they have resolved the breakdowns in the supply in El Molinar and Palma centre, which occurred as a result of the aging pipes; many of which are over 40-years-old.

More than €5 million has been spent to renovate 12km of pipeline and this year work is expected to start in the area of Ponent, one of the main areas of Palma that has suffered from three breakdowns in the last two years, one of which affected more than 60,000 citizens.

Postal cuts SOME areas of Llucmajor have lost their postal service.

The PSIB complain that the town hall has not prevented the loss of the ‘correos,’ saying it is a public service “that must come to all citizens of the municipality.”

The secretary general of the Socialist Municipal Group, Juan Catany, recalled that “in the full plenary meeting, the government team committed to exhaust all administrative remedies to avoid this situation happening and it seems that that did not happen.”

New centre for Jesus A NEW cultural centre has opened in the village of Jesus.

The mayor of Santa Eulalia des Riu, Vicent Mari opened the new centre which also includes an auditorium, a library, multipurpose halls and exhibitions, as well as renovated municipal offices and offices for the local police.

In his inaugural speech, Mari expressed his hope that the facility will become “the core of the social and cultural life of the people.”

Seismic surveys not in Balearics SEISMIC surveys in Balearic waters in 2013 have been denied.

The Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Territory, said that in April 2013 no surveys were conducted in the

Balearic Islands but were held more than 300 miles off its waters.

Biel Company was responding to opposition groups in the full Parliament on a report of his Ministry in July last

year that spoke of surveys that had been “audible throughout the Balearic Sea.” He was criticised for the lack of information on the surveys about oil exploration.

HELP THE HEROES charity fundraising continues in Mallorca with collection boxes in three locations: The Winning Post and The British Bakery in Magaluf and The Rising Sun in Santa Ponsa.

The British Bakery also have second hand books for a Euro, which goes straight to the charity box. Any donations of unwanted books are always welcome.

Simon Peters has been fundraising for the charity for the last six years and he will keep doing so until mid November.

INCA’S ruling PP party has rejected calls from the opposition to establish a commission of inquiry to ascertain the facts in the granting of the Plaza Mallorca and lighting project.

Councillor for Urbanism, Felip Jerez (PP) said: “The opposition has free access to the records of the Mallorca resort. We have no problem with the city clerk and engineer coming to the Planning Commission to clarify all the doubts that the opposition may have.”

New leisure centre for Santa Eulalia JUAN MARIANO, representative for planning in Santa Eulalia, was at the inauguration of the new leisure and entertainment centre in Jesus, Santa Eulalia.

According to Juan Mariano, the project began with an ideas competition in which a specialist jury chose the winning design.

The first stone was laid on

December 12, 2012 and the centre finally opened almost two years and €3 million later.

The facility covers 2,000 sqm of surface area, has an auditorium with seating for 230, three multipurpose rooms for workshops and conferences, a library and an exhibition area.

“It’s an important and ambitious project,” said

Mariano, “always owned by the people of Jesus.

Moreover, it was built in a democratic way with work chosen by all. It is a very modern and avant-garde building and will be very useful for the residents.”

Mariano explained that funding was made possible by the Fund for the modernisation of tourism infrastructure (FOMIT).

Lenders arrested in Palma AGENTS of the National Police have arrested five members of a group suspected of fraud and belonging to a criminal organisation.

After months of research, the police established that the group advertised in various forms of media to attract people with money problems. The group would provide a loan with a high interest rate.

However, once the borrower was unable to meet the high interest payments, the loan group forced the victims to take out new loans or put their homes up as collateral.

During the police investigation, two homes were searched resulting in the seizure of various mobile phones, a highend vehicle and €120,940 cash.

Spain stocks up on riot gear for winter THE Spanish Government is spending nearly €1 billion on riot gear for its police forces as various protestors prepare for strikes.

From shields to stab vests and the purchase of a new truck-mounted water cannon, an antiriot measure used during Franco’s dictatorship and the transition to democracy, they have gone all out.

“These water cannon can cause severe injuries and commotions when used at a short distance,” stated Angel Gonzalo from Amnesty International.

The activist group ‘Coordinadora 25-s’ has predicted a season of

protests, which they’re calling “the autumn of confronting power and institutions” which has its roots in the ‘Indignados’ movement.

Protests against the new draft bill against abortion and a demonstration to demand a referendum on the monarchy are also in talks.

First-person accounts of riots in Madrid and Barcelona claim that police treated peaceful protestors in the same way as those who showed violence towards them.

The police officers' union said that the purchases were likely to be just part of an effort by the government to

update obsolete equipment.

“We have a problem with equipment,” said Javier Estévez of the police union, pointing to a protest last March which left 67 police officers injured.

“We don’t have the best or even up-to-date equipment,” he said, despite the obligation that the government has to protect the police.

While his group opposed the purchase of the water cannon, he waved aside concerns over the other purchases, noting: “When this gear is used properly, there’s nothing wrong with it, because it’s in line with Spanish legislation.”

Family fun in friendly contests TESTS of skill such as transporting an egg on a spoon held in the mouth, target practice or a quiz was the order of the day in Palma at the weekend.

The activities formed part of the Mare de Deu de la Salut celebrations

in which families and groups of friends competed to win prizes. The prizes included hotel stays, a trip to Menorca, dinners, tickets and gift vouchers.

More than 60 participants in 15

teams took part in the fun events, set apart by shirt colours and costumes.

In first place was the Rosales Pozuelos family, followed by Els Bovers, the Els Siurells and Los Terry.

Sand fly results from Mallorca ALTHOUGH the island of Mallorca is known as a hotbed for leishmaniasis, there has been a lack of study on the cause of leish, the sand fly, since 1989.

This has all changed now, however, after a team investigated the presence of the biters on the island by laying more than 1,800 sticky traps in 77 grids. The information was collated and mapped using ArcGIS 9.2 software.

Results show that Mallorca has four species of sand fly: Phlebotomus perniciosus, P sergenti, P papatasi and Sergen-

tomyia minuta P. Phlebotomus perniciosus is the species responsible for the transmission of leishmaniasis.

Two teens hit by car TWO 14-year-old youths were hit by a van as they left school a few days ago. Local Police and an ambulance were called with one of the youths being taken to hospital.

Body found in sea is French tourist POLICE in Mallorca have announced that the woman found floating dead in the sea in July was a French tourist.

They have refused to rule out suicide or foul play as possible causes of her death. According to police investigations, the French lady travelled alone to the

island two weeks before she died. During a post mortem, the woman was found to have suffered a blow to her chest and to her face, while sand was found in her airways.

Police are now aware of the woman’s identity although they have yet not released her name.

Cala Nova charity fashion show THE third annual fashion show was held this year at the Country Club and Spa in Santa Ponsa on August 28.

Norbert Sinpec’s saxophone kicked off the evening’s entertainment while everyone was settled, before Angela Guerero opened the event.

The Gay Mens Choir of Mallorca, Albi Davies (winner of Mallorca’s got Talent) and Jerri Soulett sang for everyone.

Then the main event began, the fashion show which was as always beautifully modelled by those young beautiful girls showing off dresses and swim-wear from several fashion shops in southwest Mallorca.

The auction raised €3,500 with such diverse lots as a boat trip, cottage and hotel stays, a signed football shirt, dinner at Stringfellows, a Beatles portrait and a box for 10 at Reading FC. After the raffle, cheques were presented, €10,000 to the AECC, €8,000 to ASPANOB, €2,000 to Cancer Support Group and €1,000 to DIME. The organisers want to thank everyone who helped make the fashion show a huge success.

Without naming everyone individually the organisers wish to thank the generous supporters who donated or bought a raffle or auction prize, volunteers who donated time, all the performers, the hairdressers and make up artists, the models, the boutiques who showcased their lovely clothes, Santa Ponsa Country Club and Spa and S’horta Restaurant and of course, last, but not least, everybody that attended.

Soler claims €200,000 FORMER coach of Real Mallorca, Miguel ‘Nanu’ Soler has claimed €200,000 at the court of arbitration and mediation for the islands (TAMIB).

Despite only serving with the football team for one month, along with his assistants Vicente Lopez and Xim

Engonga, Soler put in his claim after the new general manager, the Israeli Dudu Aouate dispensed with his services and hired Russian Valeri Karpin.

Soler was a former player at Espanyol, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Real Zaragoza and Mallorca.

He has claimed payment in order to cover his entire contract which was signed in July.

Both Soler and Engonga have explained that they did not want this situation to occur, but in the end felt they had no choice.

The ‘Mallorca 360’ swimming challenge RICHARD KRUGEL has set himself a challenging goal: to swim around Mallorca.

He started swimming at approximately age four. He competed nationally and internationally and later joined the South African Navy.

He decided to travel and try his hand at working on Super Yachts. He travelled to the US, where he worked in Fort Lauderdale, but then ended up in Antibes, where he worked on luxury motor yachts.

He then decided to work a land-based job, still with yachts, but not as permanent crew. He ended up in Mallorca and fell in love with the island.

While living there, an unfortunate event took the life of his only younger brother back in South Africa on July 4, 2003. The news devastated him.

Luckily he had very good friends that comforted him and took him to a beautiful quiet beach in Mallorca to mourn. He went for a swim and got a crazy idea: “One day, I will swim around this entire Island in the name of my brother.”

He wants to attempt this swim in stages, starting on September 20.

His swim route is roughly 360km long, circumnavigating the entire island. The start and end is planned near the main marina of Palma. He wants to swim for about 18 to 20 days, swimming two stages per day of roughly 10km each in an anticlockwise direction.

The two stages will be split up into daylight hours and he will beach between every stage. A land-based vehicle will carry supplies and after the last stage of every day he will stay over at a location close to there. A support boat and crew will follow

He will not touch the boat and beach between every stage, except for two or three places on the island where beaching would be impossible and the land based support crew cannot reach him. During those days/stages he will get on board the support boat, GPS locations will be taken and he will start the next stage from those locations.

Culture with a Russian flavour

A TASTE of Russia came to Spain as the hand of friendship was held out between the two countries.

A four-day programme of events was held in Marbella for the First Russian Cultural Meeting Point.

It was a way for the Spanish, indeed all the nationalities represented on the Costa del Sol, to learn more about the cultural phenomenon that is Russia. Steeped in history, the nation has a unique artistic, cultural and spiritual heritage.

The event was a spectacular affair which brought together the different cultures to improve their understanding of each other.

It took place mainly in the Centro Comercial Marina Banus in Marbella’s Puerto Banus.

Linda Echeverria, who organised the event, said: “These days have served to create a cultural bridge

between the two countries.

We have provided an approach that has created a mutual understanding and very positive feeling

for both communities, particularly those living in Andalucia.”

She added that the four days of fashion, dance, art and music featuring artists including Maxim Rubtsov on flute, pianist Carmen Pérez Blanco, dancing group Kalinka with Russian folk songs and dances, magic master Yuri Chuguyev with his vibraphone and artist Juan Anhelo with his threedimensional artwork, were a great success.

The closing ceremony was held, which delighted the 200 attendees. Two fashion shows followed,

by Russian designer Valeria Farafonova and Spanish designer Antonia García Galiano.

Maik Alexandre of Canal Sur television and Yuliana Lobacy, Vice-President of the Russian Association Costa del Sol, presented the evening in a lighthearted and humorous fashion.

Santander’s Chairman dies THE Chairman of Spanish bank Santander has died at the age of 79.

Emilio Botín, who joined the bank’s board in 1960, died in Madrid during the early hours of Wednesday morning following a suspected heart attack.

A statement has been

sent to Spain’s national market commission (Comisión Nacional del Mercado de Valores CNMV). The statement reads: “The Bank of Santander regrets to announce the death of its chairman Emilio Botín.

“A meeting will be held today in order to select a

new chairman.”

The banking group’s market shares dropped by 1.7 per cent as the news of his death broke.

Botín has been widely credited for transforming Santander from a local bank to its current status as an international banking giant.

Madrid driver’s lucky escape A WOMAN in Madrid escaped a terrifying accident with only minor injuries on Monday after her car fell from a height of five metres.

The 37-year-old-driver was going down an exit ramp in a car park in the north of Madrid when her brakes failed.

If the woman thought the car park wall would stop her vehicle, she was in for a nasty shock. The exterior wall crumbled

as her car burst through and fell to land upside down on the street below.

Firefighters attended the incident but were not needed as the driver was fortunately able to extract herself from her destroyed car.

The woman escaped with only minor injuries thanks to the airbag being deployed, but was treated for a panic attack at the scene.

N these days of tension between Russia and the West over Ukraine, it is good to see ordinary people doing what they can to improve understanding between different cultures.

It is all too easy to demonise people from faraway lands and paint them in black and white.

But living on the Spanish Costas it is far easier to get an understanding of different cultures simply because there are so many of them making up this cosmopolitan society.

But that counts for nothing if they do not mingle and instead stick to their own. That is why events like the Russian Cultural Meeting Point in Marbella are so important.

As people get to know each other and their points of view, distrust evaporates as understanding grows.

Common sense ASHYA KING is in Prague to get treatment for his cancer. In the end, a mass breakout of common sense came to the fore.

The UK authorities dropped the arrest warrant against his parents, Spanish authorities released them and the Junta de Andalucia regional government worked to ensure that Ashya could travel abroad.

A shame that common sense could not have been shown a little earlier.

DURING the first 12 years of our lives, as much as 80 per cent of learning is accomplished through our vision.

Yet, one out of every four children has an undetected vision problem that may inhibit their progress. Once children go to school, good eye-sight is crucial to keep up with their studies. Experts believe that many learning disabilities could be vision related as they may not be able to read the blackboard or text books.

Specsavers Opticas suggest that a child should have their first eye examination at around three-years-old, as the earlier things are detected,

the easier they are to rectify without delaying the child’s development.

This September they are advising all parents to incorporate a thorough eye test into their back to school routine so they can be prepared if their child does need glasses.

The process of taking an eye test for a child is simple.

Firstly, the optometrist will ask the parent or guardian about any relevant family history and any problems their child may be experiencing.

Then several child-friendly tests will be undertaken, using special charts and other materials to help children indicate what they can see and how clearly.

They will test the vision of each eye and will check whether they work properly together. They will also measure the child’s focusing ability and the health of the child’s eyes before discussing the results with the parents.

If a child does need glasses, there are some great ranges which tick all the boxes of fashion and durability. Kids that wear glasses can now be the envy of all their friends with fun frames in bright colours sporting their favourite character or toy.

2.5m Spanish children are at risk of poverty ALMOST 50 per cent of single-parent families find it hard to tackle unforeseen expenses, pay the rent and feed their children a balanced diet.

In other words, 50 per cent of the children from single-parent households are at risk of poverty.

Children under 18 are especially vulnerable to the risk of poverty and social exclusion and in Spain, 29.9 per cent of minors, 21.9 per cent of adults and 14.8 per cent of people older than 65 are severely materially deprived or live in households with very low work intensity. These are some of the daunting conclusions drawn by the third report on children published by Educo and based on data from Eurostat, the European Commission and the National Statistics

Figures show that as many as 2.5 million Spanish children are at risk of poverty

and social exclusion, which means 500,000 more than seven years ago, when the financial crisis broke out.

As reported by Educo, this can be attributed to a number of factors. For instance, the characteristics of every individual household: data show that children from single-parent homes are at a higher risk, followed by children from large families, where the risk of poverty increases to 47 per cent. According to the report, the risk of poverty increases by almost 50 per cent in families with more than two children.

Unemployment is another important factor when determining if a child could be at risk of social exclusion or poverty. Figures show that almost one million Spanish families with children are currently affected by unemployment and that 40 per cent of them find it hard to make ends meet by the end of the month.

Spain’s lost generation SPAIN boasts the unflattering title of having the highest number of NEETS (young people who are Not in Education, Employment or Training) in the entire European Union.

Nearly one in four (25.79 per cent) young people aged between 15 and 29 in Spain are doing absolutely nothing, a report has said. It is not that they don’t want to, however, but the current climate is not affording them the possibility.

The annual report published by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) was released in Madrid today by Education Secretary Monteserrat Gomendio. If Spain is compared with the other 34 countries that form the OECD, only Turkey has a higher amount of NEETs in a similar situation to Spanish youths (29.19 per cent).

Spain’s percentage of NEETs is far higher than the OECD average, recorded at 14.9 per cent in 2012, which has continued to fall year on year while the reverse is true in Spain, which recorded 1,956,900

Fiscal fraud clampdown ANTI-FRAUD measures earned the Spanish government €5.5 billion in the first six months of this year.

It was the best half-year result ever, announced Cristobal Montoro, who heads the Finance ministry and Spain’s tax authority Hacienda.

The government’s efforts to bring the submerged economy to the surface are getting results, Montoro said, and this was reflected in increased VAT (IVA) income.

In the first six months of the year Hacienda’s revenue from VAT grew by 6.8 per cent although earnings from other taxes rose 5.3 per cent.

“More income from the consumer tax should signal increased spending but revenue is ahead of the way the economy is evolving,” Montoro pointed out.

Hacienda is also receiving more corporation tax, the minister added. In 2011 Spain’s large companies paid 3.8 per cent, but a year later this rose to 5.3 per cent and owing to changes in the law is now expected to have reached 9 per cent in 2013.

More out of jobs AFTER falling for six consecutive months, Spain’s unemployment figures rose once more in August. The number of jobless increased by 8,070, bringing a national total of 4,427,930 according to the latest Ministry of Labour figures. This is normal as unemployment figures have risen each August since 1990, the ministry said.

Layoffs loom CAIXABANK’S purchase of Barclays España will bring staff reductions, revealed sources close to the operation. Around 50 per cent of the 2,400 employees at 270 Barclays branches throughout Spain are likely to be made redundant, with restructuring costs borne by buyer and vendor, the same sources said.

IT was in the 1970s when an Equal Pay Act was introduced in the UK, which outlawed favouring one sex over another in terms of pay and conditions in the workplace.

Forty years on and it appears that female bosses are still earning only three-quarters as much as their male colleagues - meaning they would have to work until they were nearly 80 to catch up with men’s lifetime earnings, according to new figures.

With such workplace sexism obviously still in full swing it should come as no

big surprise then to hear that 40 per cent of managers questioned in another recent study admit that they would avoid hiring younger women to try and not have to deal with maternity leave.

More than 40 per cent also admitted that they would be wary of hiring a woman who has already had a child or hiring a mother for a senior role.

While 25 per cent said they would rather hire a man to get around issues of child care when a woman does return to work, with 44 per cent saying the financial costs to their business because of maternity leave are a significant concern.

Ashya’s rights trampled IT is possibly better not to put on paper one’s utter disgust and censure of the British oncologist who had been treating little Ashya King as well as the British police.

Every single person on earth or in this case the parents of this young boy - has the total right to decide to change a physician if he or she so wishes, especially as it is obvious that the parents and the physician were no longer seeing eye to eye as regards the boy’s treatment.

The actions of the parents, well thought-out and carefully planned, are more than commendable and should be applauded. It was not in anybody’s interest to have an international arrest warrant issued against them.

I applaud them fully and fervently wish a complete recovery for little Ashya! My heart bleeds for the family who were so barbarously torn apart.

Spurious charges I AGREE 100 per cent with the ‘No means No’ headline in the Euro Weekly News regarding rape. I even agree that although a female wants to dress like a hooker this does not automatically mean that she is asking to be treated like one. At this point I would also like to digress and ask why hookers should not be afforded the same respect and consideration as other women.

But back to the subject of rape: what about ‘victims’ who are too drunk to accurately recall what really happened?

What about women who cry ‘Rape!’ simply for the hell of it or

use the accusation as a lethal weapon to take revenge?

While this happens, and while males can be named and shamed and dragged through courts on the whim of a resentful woman, ‘No means No’ will have a hollow ring to it for some people.

Fenced in TWO stories in last week’s paper really got my blood to boiling point, the first about circuses.

There was a circus in Torrevieja last week and there were three elephants in a small enclosed area, just swinging their heads back and forth. I passed on more than three occasions and each time it was the same.

To me this was disgusting cruelty as an elephant needs 200 litres of water a day and I would bet my life they didn’t get it. It’s time circuses were banned. They may be entertainment to some but not the animals.

The next was the story about immigrants being abused for trying to get into Spain. The fence is there to stop them so if they choose to climb over and disobey the law they have to expect repercussions.

Surely they don’t think the police are going to say, “Hi, come in and welcome. We only put the fence there as a joke!”

Credit crisis I AM non-resident in Spain but have a holiday home in Turre which I visit several times a year.

Up until June I owned a car which I kept at Almeria airport for my use when visiting Spain. I reinsured the car for a 12-month period in March 2014.

In June I decided to sell the car because I realised it was no longer financially viable for me to keep it and I will use hire cars in the future.

Having rescinded the policy I was told there was credit of €186 or so on my file but only available to me as part-payment against any future motor policy taken out.

The broker told me this is common practice among Spanish motor insurers but I have since established this is not the case.

Moral: check carefully.

DO get miffed when my blurb is misinterpreted and subsequently misquoted. At no stage in a previous column did I say that to counteract a possible uprising by militant Islamists, the UK needed an armed force of soldiers patrolling the streets - I saw enough of that in the dark days of Northern Ireland’s ‘Troubles’.

What I did, however, suggest was that we needed large numbers of heavily armed special forces, some 5,000 or so per large city, on call and ready to go into action at a moment’s notice.

I reiterate that by providing these forces they could nip any uprising attempt in the bud.

If rioting extremists are allowed to increase in numbers because they are met with inadequate means, i.e. soft police lines arm-in-arm, subsequently upped to police carrying plastic shields, followed

Get in early with a big stick and squash any mob uprising in the shortest possible time. This would also send out the message to other potential terrorists that their actions won’t be tolerated and if they do attempt to disrupt the country, they could be sampling their 72 virgins much earlier than they anticipated. In other words, don’t pussyfoot around!

That is something our illustrious leaders still seem to be doing in the face of the so-called

Or the Bedfordshire café that refused to put strawberry sauce on ice cream? Or the London schools that told parents not to put sun cream on their children’s limbs?

Or the dog show in Keswick, Cumbria, that banned the contests in which dogs caught Frisbees, in case the animals were injured?

A Myth Busters Challenge Panel set up by the UK’s Health and Safety Executive last October to counter the problem of daft regulations has, to date, received 300 complaints.

According to Judith Hackitt, the HSE chair: “Real health and safety is about protecting people in the workplace from life- and healththreatening risks – not about refusing to apply suntan lotion, or put sauce on an ice cream.

But is the nit-picking aim of bureaucrats to enforce rules to the letter the sole cause of the problem?

Modern legislation certainly favours the setting up of a whole industry of people advising on ‘risk assessment’ and cracking down on infractions.

Or is it just as much the fear - in an age of ambulance-chasing law firms of very costly litigation? Probably a bit of both.

The Health and Safety Act was passed in 1974, but only in recent years has it been so misused.

Now everyone’s trying to cover their behinds in case there’s an accident they could be held responsible for (and hence sued for) - much of this petty regulation due to insurance companies, trying to minimise their liability by refusing to pay up. Remember the old mantra: “Where there’s blame there’s a claim...”

Isn’t the problem, then, a combination of the current ‘proactive’ nature of risk assessment - making rules to cover what might go wrong so the remotest risk, because it could happen, is legislated against - compounded by over-zealous interpretation by ambulance-chasers and jobsworths?

HEN proudly you turn your first car’s ignition key you do much more than switch on the engine. This is the key, if not to the universe, as close as you get to it. Like your first romance your first car is never forgotten and one has mixed memories about the experience.

With trepidation in my heart and £50 in my damp fist I became the owner of an Isle of Man registered Ford Prefect. There was good reason why I kangaroo-jumped out of the car sales shop front doorway. Clutch?

I had never before driven a car but knew the theory. To my undying shame I considered a driving licence and insurance as being surplus to requirements. The salesman was a retired policeman.

Back then things were far more relaxed.

Mid-shift bus drivers sank several pints. If you could wobble-walk a straight line you were sober. Seat belts were for pilots.

What followed was an unfortunate start to a lifetime’s driving experiences few of

Having later crashed a milk float the attending officer drily remarked on the delightful glass verge.

This cocky cad cockily flipped a coin through the open car’s window into the Mersey Tunnel’s toll basket. Having rebuked the tunnel policeman that the damned barrier had failed to rise, the policeman coolly picked the coin up from the road, handed it to me and then suggested I place it properly in the basket.

Things were so much easier back then.

Hopefully the long arm of the law is not too telescopic.

MANY people have asked me ‘How to give a cat a pill’ and with the help of Celia Haddon, here is the information you need. Getting pills into cats can be difficult.

Always ask for spot-on products, palatable or nice tasting pills, or for products that can be mixed with food, if possible. There is now something called Easytabs, a meat flavoured cover for a pill made by Bayer.

Another called Pill Pockets. You press the pill into the meat pellet. Clever stuff. Other medications may come in malt flavoured creams that can be wiped on to the cat’s mouth so that it

DIFFICULT TASK: Pills for cats. licks it off. If you have to give a pill, ask the vet for the smallest pill possible and the pill which will last longest. i.e. you want to give a pill once a day rather than four times a day if possible.

If you must administer a pill, this is how to do it. Kneel and place your cat

facing away from you between your knees. With thumb and middle finger, pull the cat’s head back until it is facing straight up at the ceiling. It is crucial that the cat’s head must be facing upwards at 90 degrees.

Use gentle pressure from thumb and middle finger on either side of the cat’s jaw, at rearmost crease of the lips, to open cat’s mouth. Pop tablet on the tongue as far back down the throat as possible. Close cat’s mouth and keep the head pointing up at the ceiling. Hey presto, the cat will swallow the pill.

For flea and worm treatments, ask for a spot-on rather than a pill. There are now spot-ons for both.

Is your pet drinking too much?

IS your pet is drinking too much water?

Some pets drink more than others and cats may be very private about their water intake, but when it exceeds 10 per cent of their body weight (a 10-kilo dog drinking more than one litre a day) they are drinking too much.

If unable to monitor the water intake then you will notice the excessive urine production.

Urinating inside at night or a sopping litter tray are the most common observations.

Many illnesses can cause too much drinking: diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus, pre-diabetes mellitus (non-spayed female

thyroidism, heart disease, tumours or psychogenic.

The first step would be for you to collect a urine sample and make an appointment with your veterinarian. After a clinical examination and urine analysis, blood tests might be necessary.

Sometimes further blood tests and urine tests have to be done.

X-rays, ultrasound and scans may be necessary to evaluate the underlying cause. Many of these illnesses are controllable but need lifelong medication and monitoring.

Five good reasons for you to love red tomatoes, a Mediterranean gem

OMATOES are the gem of Mediterranean diets, and with good reason.

These bright red fruit are bursting with goodness,

they are easy to buy at any time of year and they aren’t expensive.

Love them because they: 1. Are packed with antioxidants, including vitamins A, C and E. Antioxidants are great for anti-aging and prevent heart disease, cancer and strokes.

If you are thinking about getting one removed, here are some of the most frequently asked questions: How are they removed?

New research has shown that having regular family meals could be good for the mental health of youngsters and may combat the effects of cyberbullying.

Canadian researchers suggest that the social contact, support and communication experienced during family meals could help shield teenagers from the effects of online bullying. The study, published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics, surveyed more than 20,000 adolescents, measuring exposures to cyberbullying and traditional (face-to-face) bullying.

It also asked teenagers about a wide range of other mental health issues including depression, anxiety and substance use.

New pests attacking Spanish gardens Dick Handscombe

By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.

DURING the past week two friends have telephoned about their latest gardening woes.

The first had just discovered that a large clump of aloes had been killed off by aloe snout weevils ‘Scyphophorus acupunctatus,’ a newproblem-in-Spain-insect that has taken about three years to arrive on the Costa Blanca from the Costa de la Luz. Unfortunately, like the palm weevil, there is no really effective treatment of diseased plants.

The insects are brownish and 15 to 30 centimetres in length.

The second friend had just discovered that both their tall specimen Phoenix palms had succumbed to the red

This weevil is also a type of snout weevil but can be 30 to 50 millimetres long.

I am not aware of how the aloe weevil came to Spain but the palm weevil is said to have been imported into Andalucia in 1994 in a batch of diseased palm trees. By 2006, the flying weevils had spread to France.

Although destroying the tropical image of the

coastline, village squares and gardens, it has not been the most damaging problem to Spain’s floral image. That spot must be taken by the African Geranium moths ‘Cacyreus marshalli,’ or ‘Tespis Tespis,’ which arrived in the early 1990s, apparently in a lorry-load of geraniums from a Dutch greenhouse.

Again it took just a few years to spread along the costas and then inland. Gone now

Even planting garlic segments in geranium pots and spraying twice a week with a special spray is not a total solution, for abandoned plants in absentee owner gardens and apartments can be a virulant breeding ground.

Other pests that have become a bother during the past 25 years are the Cirtus minero moth and the many fruit flies attacking citrus and other fruit trees, tuti flies attacking tomatoes and many other fly type insects attacking vegetables.

I have just read an interesting research paper about citrus pests of importance to the Spanish citrus industry where markets like no blemishes on the skins and any attacks to leaves and flowers can reduce the productivity of trees.

The paper reported that for the past 45 years there has been a new imported insect pest every three years with eight in just the past 10 years.

From our experience the best thing that expat amateur gardeners can do is to spray fruit trees and diseased vegetable plants regularly with neem oil solutions in water.

Another fruit tree problem becoming more common in areas where orchards have been abandoned is honey fungus.

The most practical eco solution we have found is to use propylis sprays or treatment of trunks or branches with a small paint brush.

Eight Spanish regions register price increases in August

PROPERTY prices increased in August in eight Spanish regions.

While it is true that the price of resale housing dropped by 0.4 per cent in August, compared to July, house prices actually increased in eight Spanish regions, led by La Rioja (+1 per cent) and Catalonia (+0.8 per cent), according to idealista.com.

In August 2013, prices stood at €1,764 per square metre, but have since dropped by 5.3 per cent. The Basque Country is still the most expensive Spanish region with €2,779 per square metre, followed by Madrid with €2,607 per square metre and Catalonia, €1,926. The least expensive regions are Castilla La Mancha with €1,016 per square metre, Extremadura with €1,038 and Murcia with €1,062.

As many as 20 provinces maintained positive price rates in August and the greatest growth was registered in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (+1.6 per cent), Barcelona (+1.4 per cent) and La Rioja (+1 per cent).

CASTILLA LA MANCHA: One of the least expensive regions.

On the other hand, the sharpest declines were witnessed in Castellon (-1.8 per cent), Caceres (-1.5 per cent) and Avila (-1.4 per cent).

Government to award housing reform grants

THE Spanish Government is to provide grants for housing reforms.

Through a housing plan approved in July, the Spanish Government is to allocate €2 million to promote rental housing, restoration and energy efficiency.

According to the Ministry of Development, restoration activities create three times as many jobs as the construction of new buildings.

Therefore, in an effort to support this activity and fight unemployment, Madrid has decided to award a series of subsidies, grants and loans to people who wish to renovate their homes.

To gain access to the aids, homeowners must fulfil a number of

conditions, according to idealista.com.

The building cannot have been built after 1981 and at least 70 per cent of its total area must be designated for residential use only.

In the case of housing, the grants are to only be awarded to applicants wishing to restore their home addresses.

The Government also requires that funds be used to improve the gas, electricity, ventilation and insulation facilities or to build extensions that cannot exceed 120 square metres.

The grants can also be invested to reinforce the structure of the building.

They are followed by Castellon (50 per cent) and Huesca (-49.4 per cent). In contrast, the slightest decreases were registered in Ourense (-17.5 per cent), San Sebastian (-20.6 per cent) and Coruña (-23.3 per cent).

The front seats are available with optional ventilation and massage functions; the controls are simple. The MMI radio operating system and deluxe automatic air conditioning are standard.

The luggage compartment of the Audi A6 Avant offers between 565 and 1,680 litres of space and many practical features.

and 245kW (333hp) and five TDI units ranging from 110kW (150hp) to 240kW (326hp). All engines comply with the limits of the Euro 6 emission standard, and their CO2 emissions have been reduced by as much as 22 per cent.

At Audi, the most efficient petrol and diesel engines bear the ‘ultra’ label. Combined with the all-new S tronic transmission, the 1.8 TFSI ultra consumes just 5.7 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres corres-ponding to 133 grams CO2 per kilometre (214g/mi).

The 2.0 TDI ultra with 110kW (150hp) achieves the extremely low consumption figure - with no restrictions with respect to equipment - of 4.2 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres corresponding to 109 grams CO2 per kilometre (175.4g/mi).

The top gasoline engine, the 3.0 TFSI, has been comprehensively revised.

The engine developers have also completely redesigned numerous aspects of the 3.0 TDI clean diesel, which is available with either 160kW (218hp) or 200KW (272hp).

The four rings keep growing worldwide AUDI has maintained its path of growth worldwide in August: sales rose 5.6 per cent to around 125,300 cars.

This brings the total number of customers who have chosen an Audi since the start of the year to around 1,138,700, an increase of 10.5 per cent.

The four rings grew particularly strongly in North America in August, increasing sales by 22.6 per cent year on year.

“Worldwide demand for our automobiles continues to develop positively even if the economic environment in certain markets remains challenging. Regarding our deliveries total, we are confident of selling 1.7 million cars by the end of the year,” remarked Luca de Meo, Member of the Board of Management for Sales at AUDI AG. “As well as the A3 family, the popular A6 derivatives in particular and also the

successful Q models are providing steady growth rates.”

In August, most notably the Audi Q3 lifted the sales total with an increase of 40 per cent compared with the same month of the previous year.

There was lively demand for the compact SUV in the UK (+25.3 per cent) and China, where sales of this model more than doubled. The Q3 has also been available in the US market since the end of August and will further strengthen sales of Audi’s family of SUV models there.

With 17,101 deliveries (+22.1 per cent) in the US, Audi maintained its successful track record on the North American continent in August. Since the start of this year, Audi has therefore handed some 139,850 North American customers the keys to their new car and more than doubled its sales in the region since 2009.
