First for Copa del Rey THE 33rd edition of Copa del Rey MAPFRE - one of the most important sporting events of the summer in Spain - was held in Palma Bay between August 2 and 9. This year’s competition was made even more special by the fact that it was the first time that Felipe de Borbon participated in the famous regattas as King of Spain since he was crowned on June 19. Felipe VI has always been passionate about water sports and he was even a member of the Spanish Olympic sailing team in Barcelona in 1992. Organised by the Royal Nautical Club of Palma, the 33rd edition of Copa del Rey MAPFRE saw teams from all over the world arrive in Mallorca to compete for one of the coveted trophies. New tourism law a hit with island hoteliers BALEARIC hoteliers have announced that they consider the new tourism law to be a step in the right direction. The hotel federations of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera have expressed their appreciation of the new law, which encourages quality tourism as well as competition in all sectors of the hotel industry. In a joint press release they said they had studied the changes the new law proposes and fully support them. The new law gives legal guarantees for the promotion of the diversification of Balearic

The hot weather has arrived
MALLORCA was put on a yellow alert as temperatures soared at the weekend. Temperatures hit 37 degrees Celsius in places and that led the Balearic health department to issue advice on how to cope with the hot weather. Concerned particularly with high risk groups like the very young and the elderly, the department stressed that simple precautions can help avoid health problems. These include drinking plenty of water, staying cool by keeping out of the direct sun, wearing cool clothes and avoiding heavy meals.
The department also warned of another problem little thought about, that of ensuring food hygiene standards in such hot weather. These include ensuring food is kept chilled at all times and fruit and vegetables are washed before eating. There are four levels of warning from green (no risk) to yellow, orange and finally red. The yellow alert was issued as authorities considered temperatures would rise above 35 degrees C for two consecutive days. By Wednesday temperatures had dipped to around 30 degrees.

He managed Spartak Moscow between 2009 and 2014 and is now to be at the helm of Real Mallorca in the second division of Spanish football. Official sources confirmed that former manager Miquel Soler, his assistant Vicente Engonga and fitness coach Xim Lopez have
been dismissed from the club. Dudu Aouate held a press conference to thank Miquel Soler for his hard work and said he is there to make the best decisions possible for the team. “I would like to sincerely thank Miquel Soler and his team, but Karpin is the new manager because of this project and his ideas,” said Aouate.

HE August fair - perhaps better known as Malaga Fair - is here again, and it is one of the biggest in Spain. This fantastic street party has its origins in 1487, when the city was incorporated into the Corona de Castilla (Castilla kingdom) by the Catholic Kings. The kings gave the city the Virgen de la Victoria (Victory Virgin) and the council agreed to always commemorate the event by celebrating a ‘fiesta’ every year on the day of Asuncion. Originally the celebration was only one day long and the whole town would join in a procession in honour of the Virgen de la Victoria. In just a few years it had grown to incorporate a small bullfight (only four bulls) and a few ‘casetas’ (pop-up bars). In the 17th century fireworks were incorporated into the celebrations and then came more casetas and by 1887 it resembled what it is today, a

Romeo and Juliet style feud in the streets of Mallorca A RELATIONSHIP between a pair of lovers from rival gypsy clans has set off a mini crime wave in Palma, even including an attempted murder. Police have detained two brothers but both families are living in fear over possible comebacks. The relationship between a man and a woman from two rival families has given rise to threats, aggressive incidents, fights and, on one occasion, attempted murder. In a joint operation between the Local and National Police two brothers were arrested and a large stash of weapons confiscated, but this has done nothing to calm the troubled waters. Just last Friday (August 8) the police had to break up a large street fight between the two clans which was spread over more than one neighbourhood.

The four detainees are all siblings, two brothers and two sisters, and all stand accused of drug trafficking. They have been let out on bail of €5,000 for one of them and €3,000 each for the others. Their other family members had gathered outside the courts in Via Alemania and as soon as the bail was set they had a whip round and collected the money to set them all free again. Palma police investigate alleged child sexual abuse abuse case. The National Police have launched an investigation to determine whether there is some truth to a rumour according to which several adults have had sex with minors in exchange for illegal drugs at an abandoned building on Calle Jacint Verdaguer. The teenage victims are
believed to be from broken homes or temporary shelters who have taken refuge in the abandoned building that has stood empty for approximately seven months. It is said to have since become a meeting point for young people. Local Police officers in Palma have been to the building several times

Renting in Palma not cheap RENTING a room in a Palma shared flat is far from cheap. Anyone wanting to rent a single bedroom in a shared flat in Palma would need to be willing to pay as much as €267 a month, according to a study by idealista.com. However, renting in Palma is not as expensive as in San Sebastian at €341 a month, Barcelona €399, Madrid €329 and Bilbao €319. Data also showed that the average tenant in Mallorca is around 31 years old, while they tend to be 29 elsewhere in Spain. The largest rent variations in the last 12 months were in Santiago de Compostela (+8.7 per cent), followed by Oviedo (+3.2 per cent) and Albacete (+1.5 per cent).

Pioneering service arrives TRANSMEDITERRANEA (ferry company serving Mallorca) is to integrate its services with the Movalia bus company and, in this way, bring the islands and the

Man dies in accident
CURVY ROADS: Could have been the cause.
A MAN has died in a traffic accident in Pollensa. The car he was driving was involved in a head on collision with a van and he died instantly. The 30-year-old Uruguayan man was driving along the MA-2200, in the area of Pollensa, when, due to unknown causes, the two vehicles crashed into each other. The driver of the van was hurt but not critically so and he has been taken to the Inca Hospital where he is said to be doing well.

Double rescue in Escorca MOUNTAIN RESCUE and the Mallorca fire brigade have rescued a young man of 25 in Sa Fosca. He was walking the streams of the area and hurt himself while in the Sa Fosca area of Escorca. A fire brigade spokesperson has reported that the young man broke his collar bone and arm and was taken to the hospital at Son Espases where he is recovering well. The same group of mountain rescue and fire brigade members also rescued a group of missing ramblers who were in the area and had been lost for about a day. They were all alive and well.

From paella in Palma to porridge in UK A CONVICTED robber who walked out of an open prison in Boston, UK, six years ago is back inside this week after the authorities caught up with him in Mallorca.
Johnstone, who was approaching the halfway stage of a six-and-a-half year sentence for a series of robberies and attempted robberies, was eventually tracked down to
Palma, where he was detained last month under a European Arrest Warrant. Jonathan Dunne, prosecuting, said that Johnstone was flown back
to the UK and is now in prison serving the three years and 11 months remaining from his original sentence. Londoner Johnstone, 30, admitted escaping from custody on September 5, 2008. He was sentenced to serve an additional twomonth jail term consecutive to the original sentence he is now back serving. Johnstone’s defence lawyer, Christopher Geeson, said Johnstone had changed his life for the better whilst he was on the run.

EXPATS could be forced to return home under new government tax proposals affecting rental property in the UK, the Euro Weekly News has learned. The plans, forwarded by the Chancellor George Osborne, would see the removal of personal tax allowance privileges for overseas residents who also claim income in the UK. If the Chancellor goes ahead with the plans, couples drawing a government pension could also face a £4,000 (€5,000) cut in their yearly income, forcing many to return home. UK government pension plans are only taxable in Britain, meaning that former civil servants living abroad could see a rise in their tax obligations.

TAX HIKE: UK Chancellor plans to hit tax allowances. Under the current legislation, expatriates and EU nationals have UKearned income offset with a personal tax allowance of £10,000 (€12,570), but the planned reforms could jeopardise those expats who live under a carefully considered budget. Up to 400,000 expats
could be affected by the proposals which would inject the treasury with an extra £400 million (€503 million) a year. Jackie Hall, a tax partner at Baker Tilly, advises UK expats with rental property at home to consider selling up and reinvesting abroad. Speaking to The Telegraph,
Ms Hall said: “Our pensioners who’ve gone abroad are going to suffer the biggest impact. “If you have already jumped ship and are reasonably comfortable, this could turn the tide against you. Those people may begin to struggle because they haven’t got the income in retirement that they thought they had.” Although no decision has yet been made, a treasury spokesman, also speaking to The Telegraph, said: “The increases the government has made to the personal allowance support hardworking people by helping them to keep more of the money they earn and, as a result, is one of the most generous in the world.”

Four car crash A FOUR car pile-up has left one young man, of 19, critically injured and another three children, all between the ages of nine and 12, with light injuries. The accident took place on the Santa Margalida road between Son Serra Marina and Can Picafort. The young man in critical condition had to be cut out of his car by the Mallorca fire brigade after he became trapped there by the car crumpling during the accident - he was taken to the hospital in Inca suffering from serious leg injuries. The three children were taken to the local hospital in Muro with their parents. The cause of the accident is unknown.
A tightening of the licencing regulations in the Andratx area and the accompanying threat of fines up to ₏300,000 have put them in an untenable position. In the past, it was not possible to obtain such a licence in Andratx (they have often requested one during the past decade) and it is unfortunate that the town council did not think to let them know of the new licencing rules months ago. It is particularly disastrous for them in August, when many old friends of the Association and the restaurant are on the island and wish to enjoy the special ambiance they offer. The situation is being discussed with the council and they hope to have more news next week. In the meantime, expressions of support and desire to see their music programme continue, should be posted on the council’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/AAndratx?fr ef=ts). They trust that their good relations with the council will help them find a rapid solution. Please note, that Limon y Chelo will remain closed until further notice.

The announcement was made earlier this week by the prime minister of Spain, Mariano Rajoy, after a conversation with King Felipe. When questioned about the controversy of some polls which oppose prospecting in Balearic waters, Rajoy said: “While I am prime minister there will be no oil exploration if there is the slightest hint that it can generate the slightest problems to the environment.”
In his speech Rajoy said that exploration surveys were approved in 2010 by the government of Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. However, he said the application of those probes ‘will be long’. He also reiterated that permissions would be rescinded if there were any risks posed. In June, the supreme court upheld the 2001 authorisation granted by Jose Maria Aznar to Repsol for oil exploration in nine areas off the coast of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands.

Consumidores en Accion, the Spanish consumer protection organisation, has advised all affected ticket-holders to claim compensation for the David Guetta concert dates that were cancelled in Madrid and Mallorca and to ask the promoter XLR Music to give them a refund on their tickets. FACUA issued a press release in which they said they had been in touch with consumer protection authorities in Madrid and the Balearic Islands. They had asked them to start an investigation to see if any ticket-holders had received a refund from XLR Music. In addition, to verify whether they would also be compensated for expenses incurred in getting to the concerts,
including hotel and transport costs. According to FACUA, XLR Music has since closed its Facebook account and cannot be reached by phone. Their Twitter account has not been updated since late July. The Madrid shows were cancelled for security reasons and because there seems to have been a problem with the licence, said FACUA. The Mallorca show was reportedly called off because of unpaid commitments to suppliers. Following the cancellations, XLR Music representatives said they were solely responsible for the refund. However, no tickets have been refunded yet.

Guardia Civil may be liable to prosecution A SPANISH court is to determine if Guardia Civil officers in Melilla are liable to prosecution. The Court of First Instance and Investigation No. 2 in Melilla is to look into the behaviour of Guardia Civil officers and the Moroccan police while trying to keep 400 illegal immigrants from entering Spain on June 18. The lawsuit was filed by three nongovernmental organisations, including SOS Racismo and Prodein. The plaintiffs submitted a video to the court, which is now to decide if the law enforcement officials are guilty of assault, coercion, degrading treatment, perversion of justice and crimes against individual rights. The video shows Moroccan auxiliary forces beating an immigrant on Spanish soil, while Spanish security forces were standing less than 15 metres away and did nothing to stop them. It is also said to show a group of immigrants, some injured, being taken to Morocco by Moroccan law enforcement officials and Guardia Civil officers. The Court has asked that the Guardia Civil officers that were on duty be

Ex Hell’s Angels leader arrested GERMAN police conducted searches at the residences of a former Hell’s Angels leader. German law enforcement officials arrived in Mallorca to investigate the alleged accomplices of Christopher R, former leader of the Hell’s Angels on the island, who is currently behind bars following an operation launched in Germany to crackdown on drug trafficking. Police inquiries hint at a possible drug trafficking ring controlled by the 37-year-old from Spain that would allegedly smuggle large amounts of illegal drugs from the Netherlands to Germany. Spanish police are also looking into the possible involvement of the Hell’s Angels in the illegal businesses. Three German police officers, Spanish National Police and Spanish Court officials in Palma conducted on Tuesday morning searches at three Llucmajor residences in Vallgornera and Sa Torre. The house searches
were requested by the German court investigating the drug charges the former Hell’s Angels leader has been accused of. Christopher R reportedly spent a long time in Mallorca from March 2010, when the Hell’s Angels Mallorca chapter was founded. He was detained by the Guardia Civil in December 2010 on a highway between Llucmajor and Campos. At the time of his arrest he was in possession of a gun, a machete and brass knuckles. The man has been the target of an investigation from German police for a few months now. He is suspected of being the leader of a drug trafficking ring smuggling drugs from the Netherlands. German Special Forces placed him and another three under arrest in June and seized four kilograms of amphetamine and 180 grams of cocaine. The group had allegedly been smuggling drugs into Berlin and Brandenburg since 2012.

THE Spanish Government has frozen the exportation of arms to Israel. Arms sales and their conditions, which have stopped since the beginning of August, are to be examined again in September. The current ban does not affect any deals made up to the time the ban came into effect. The decision to prohibit sales came as the result of a government ministerial meeting, in which the Israel/Gaza situation was discussed, and was reached by the
consensus of the majority of ministers. The meeting took into consideration the death of almost 1,800 Palestinian citizens, many of them children, and the evidently superior firepower of the Israelis. In 2013, Spain sold almost â‚Ź4.9-million worth of arms to Israel, which is around 87 per cent more than in 2012, and the biggest sale in the last five years. The sales consisted mainly of bombs, bullets, rockets, torpedoes, missiles, grenades and demolition charges, but also included military vehicles and software.

SUN protection creams could be damaging to marine life near the coasts. On contact with the water the sunscreens release toxic components and this then contaminates the marine life in the area, principally marine micro-algae. A Spanish survey by the
CISC (Centre for Scientific Investigations) has revealed that beach-goers could be ruining the beaches they love just by applying sunscreen; what is protecting them is contaminating the waters with chemicals which are difficult to get rid of. The Marine Institute of Andalucia (a regional
branch of the CISC) has explained that although individuals do not release very much of the toxic substance from sunscreen into the water, the vast amount of people on the beaches using it makes all the difference and, together, it is like pouring a litre per kilometre into the sea every day.

Government cuts back its fleet THE ministries of the Inland Revenue and Presidency are the two ministries with the greatest number of official cars. The total number of official cars registered for use by government ministries is 303 cars and 411 chauffeurs and the Inland Revenue and Public Administration Ministry has 58 of them with 78 chauffeurs. They are seconded only by the Ministry of the Presidency which presently has 38 vehicles and 50 chauffeurs. In equal third place came the ministries of Economy and Foreign Affairs which
have 31 cars and 42 chauffeurs each. When the present government took over from the Zapatero government they reduced the fleet, as promised, from its previous high of 921 cars which were for general use and assigned cars to each ministry therefore cutting down on the number of vehicles needed. The reduction of the number of cars was achieved by selling them off at auction and reducing the number of chauffeurs was achieved by simply not hiring any new staff when one of them retired.
€3m cocaine shower stuns hotel guests A SUSPECTED Irish drugs trafficker has been arrested after he threw €3 million worth of cocaine out of his hotel window in Valencia City. Apparently, Philip G, 39, had an attack of paranoia and decided to get rid of the drugs in a hurry. Fortunately nobody was injured as the suitcases fell eight floors to the ground beside the pool. Unfortunately for Philip G, they burst open and 59 kilos of cocaine showered the poolside area.
Police were called by the hotel receptionist. Philip G had set about disposing of the drugs after he heard noises from fellow hotel guests and jumped to the conclusion that they were in fact a rival gang intent on stealing his drugs. He tried to hide packages of cocaine in the false ceiling of his room and the toilet cistern, before opting to throw them out of the window. As chaos erupted by the poolside, Philip
managed to lock himself out of his room and had to go to reception to ask for a replacement key. But at that precise moment two policemen arrived on the scene. The hotel receptionist confirmed that Philip was the man from the room in question and he was promptly arrested and the drugs, estimated at €3 million, were confiscated. At the time of going to print, he was still being held in custody.

Woman admits to killing her newborn baby son NATIONAL POLICE officers in Alicante arrested a woman for killing her newborn baby. The 18-year-old confessed to killing her son and abandoning his lifeless body in a waste container. The woman went to a hospital on Wednesday last week at around 10pm and asked to be seen by a physician. Hospital nurses realised she had recently given birth and repeatedly asked her where the baby was. She then gave in to the pressure and
confessed to the gruesome killing. The woman was born in Colombia but has a Spanish passport. The police later arrived at the hospital and took her to El Ensanche urbanisation in Alcoy (Alicante). There they found the waste container and the dead baby. The woman is said to have killed her son shortly after giving birth and it remains to be determined if the stabbing wounds to the baby’s body were made after or before he died.

Internet car parts scam two arrested
THE National Police in Tarragona have arrested a man and his wife on suspicion of being responsible for an online scam. Police officers suspect that the profits gained from the scam earned the couple more than €100,000 in just the last year. The scam reportedly involved selling spare car parts over the web and then never supplying them. In order to avoid police action, as soon as the money was transferred into the company accounts, it would be moved to a different account and then to
another and so on for another 10 bank accounts. Some of the accounts were in the name of the wife, who has also been arrested. There have been a total of 73 complaints made at different police stations around the country (Sevilla, Lugo, Madrid, Malaga, Barcelona and Palma, among others) which, between them, total a loss of around €100,000 for all those conned into sending money and not receiving the parts they ordered. The modus operandi was always the same: the suspect would place an advert on a well-known website, offering spare
parts for a range of cars. He would include a photograph of the parts as well as a contact phone number. When a customer bought anything they would have to pay up front and then wait for the parts to arrive in the post. But the goods were never sent. As soon as the cash was in the account, it was taken out and shifted around so much that it was difficult to follow the paper trail. The couple stand accused of fraud, swindling and falsifying documentation. They are out on bail until their case can be heard.

THE old rhyming slang phrase ‘I should coco!’ is not exactly what Brussels says at present. Far from implying ‘We should say so!’ the Joint Committee of the European Supervisory Authorities (EBA, EIOPA and ESMA) recently reminded EU banks and insurance companies of the consumer protection requirements for certain financial instruments. Specific attention was drawn to the risks associated with CoCos - contingent convertible bonds - which convert into equity if a key trigger, usually a bank’s core capital ratio, breaches a predefined floor. Some financial institutions engage in ‘self-placement’ by selling financial instruments that they or their group companies have issued and which require ‘specific prudential requirements,’ the Joint Committee said. More than sun, sea and sun in Spain ALTHOUGH most tourists head for Spain’s beaches, many are drawn by its sporting reputation. The Spanish themselves made 2.27 million journeys linked to sport last year, according to a report from the Institute of Tourism Studies (IET). These accounted for 2.6 per cent of all journeys inside the country, producing €523 million in turnover for the transport sector. International tourists increased the figure still further, with 9,039,000 journeys, IET revealed. Spain’s climate and sports infrastructure play a principal part in its ability to attract fans at home and abroad, the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism said. Additional factors attract tourists keen to view or participate in sport,
tourism experts said, and Spain’s sporting prestige is a principal lure. Adventure sport is in growing demand and the €62 billion it generated in 2009 rose to €197 billion by last year, according to Hosteltur. The sector has registered annual growth of 65 per cent, the online tourism group said. Air-based sports predominate, with hot-air ballooning, parachuting and piloting light aircraft the most popular, said adventure sports specialists Yumping. But football still draws more sports tourists than any other activity, not only to watch but also to learn how to play it the Spanish way. Youngsters converge on the country each summer from Italy, France, the US, Mexico and China for coaching throughout Spain.

These emissions, the banks have stressed, were aimed exclusively at “qualified investors” making minimum outlays of €100,000 and adhered meticulously to government guidelines.

After all, educated people tend to have enough financial clout to buy property and selling property was his line of business. My suggestion was turned down flat. Unemployment falls but precariously THE timid improvement in Spain’s unemployment figures continued last month. Another 62,108 people joined the Social Security system which now has 16.74 million contributors. Inem, the state labour exchange, crossed a further 29,841 names off their books and the 4.41 million people without jobs are 5.9 per cent fewer than a year ago. This is the lowest since Mariano Rajoy took over as president of the Spanish government in November 2011. According to Social Security statistics, recuperation began at the beginning of this year although the regular survey of the working population (EPA) places this in the second quarter of 2014. Although more people are in work, the government’s critics point out that 38.2 per cent of new contracts are for part-time jobs, the highest proportion yet. The latest Social Security figures confirm that the trend has now
become a norm with open-ended contracts falling by 49.1 per cent in July. Few jobs were permanent and 93.1 per cent of new jobs were temporary although this is inevitable when seasonal summer jobs are involved. The type of work available was also dictated by the time of the year, as practically all were in the hotel and catering trade, the retail sector and health industry - three areas with increased seasonal demand and the need to cover health professionals’ holidays. The CEOE, Spain’s Federation of Industry, greeted the figures with caution and called for more labour reforms in order to create more jobs. The two principal trade unions CCOO and UGT described the improvement in unemployment as insufficient. Too many new jobs are precarious, they said, and the better figures camouflaged the 2.6 million long-term unemployed who no longer receive state benefits.

Live in Spain, but don’t forget to vote at home LIKE many readers I was somewhat confused regarding my rights to vote in UK elections. I was also put off by the government’s website indicating that although I could vote, there was only a four-day turnaround for postal votes. The latter is untrue. If you have been on the voting register in the last 15 years then you are eligible to re-register with your last council, using your current Spanish address. I achieved this partly online and partly by post, requesting an application form online. I felt that letting them post it to me proved they did in fact have my correct address. They explained that they were obliged to post voting forms no earlier than 12 days before an election and no later than four although it is their practice to send them out nine days before. I would suggest you do as I did and go straight to your last council’s website if you want a sensible reply. Bargain labels I AM writing in response to the very badly written and observed ‘Looky Looky’ article Louise Elliot totally misses the point about why people buy goods from these people. It’s because they want to own a Versace bag, Prada sunglasses or a Rolex watch and walk around wearing a Gant or Fred Perry polo shirt. They are fully aware they are fake but want the label. Instead of spending €40 or €50 on a fake Rolex there is no way someone like this would go to a local jeweller and spend four times that on a cheap High Street brand. South Africa suffers from this malady big time, and the police all have extensive training regarding the criminal activities of the ringleaders. I READ your article about the Silent Epidemic which is supposedly ‘sweeping across the coast.’ I appreciate the fundraising events organised by Jackie Lawson but I believe she is launching the wrong campaign for the wrong reasons. Spain’s economy is not based on the tourist euro and is certainly not dependent on the euros earned by foreign bar and restaurant owners. Clampdowns take place because bar and restaurant owners do not follow the rules and entertainers losing work are mainly from the United Kingdom. I am a Dutch citizen but have been a resident in Orihuela Costa for more than 10 years. Many restaurants do a nice job, however the bars are a different story. The majority are owned and managed by non-Spanish people and some are hell for permanent residents. Some nights, we can’t hear the television. On other nights we can’t have a proper conversation on our own terrace. Why do I have to accept that abuse? Jackie Lawson should know better: there are more residents than holidaymakers in the area, who have money to spend the whole year round. Politicians on their own planet LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT
T
HERE’S nothing more unsettling, or indeed frightening, than realising our esteemed political and supposedly educated world leaders are in a fact a bunch of out-oftouch, utterly naïve, cretins. You can only judge others by your own yardsticks and such is the illusion created by these dangerous, dithering public schoolboys, most of us are led to truly believe that we are somehow inferior to them and their allegedly superior intellects. Well, we’re not! Thirty years ago this ole boy, an ex-pop singer from a post-war background and secondary school education, wrote about the threat of Islamist extremism and suggested that if action was not taken earlier rather than later it would be too late because they would have become entrenched in societies everywhere. Why couldn’t they see that? I also suggested that because most of the inhabitants of the Middle East were so

To me, a layman, the whole scenario was glaringly obvious. Now, at the ripe old age of 75, I find this incompetent bunch of ‘world leaders’ are only just beginning to realise they have not only failed to ‘save’ the Mid-East, but have managed to create a monster, that now truly does appear to be spiralling completely out of control.
And who are emerging as the new Mid-East leaders? Who else but the strongest and most cruel, fearspreading, dictatorial bunch the world has seen since the inglorious days of Attila the Hun. Told you so! How can the politicians be so completely out of touch with what’s really happening in the real world? I’ll tell you why, because none of them truly live in it.
In their ivory tower environments, they observe the world and its inhabitants as mere chess pieces, to be moved and manipulated on a playing field of smoky mirrors and lies, created by themselves merely to enhance their own careers and swell their comfortable nest eggs. I’ll be perfectly honest and tell you I have never voted for any of them in my whole life, I just couldn’t do it. I believe the whole system is wrong and you can’t trust or rely on any of them. Their inflated egos, arrogance and downright lily-livered ignorance, is slowly bringing this planet of ours to its knees. Not their planet, of course. Heaven forbid! Well, they don’t live on it, do they? Planet Politics is their domain. It’s an Earth moon. Wonder what will happen to them when there is no longer anything left to orbit!? Don’t even get me going on Madam Sayeeda Warsi. What happens when 75 per cent of the Cabinet is of the same biased ilk as this particular MP? Goodnight all. PAIN’S two most international film stars, Oscar-winning Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem, put their names to an uncompromising statement about the Gaza bombings. The open letter blaming Israel for the latest hostilities was issued by the Spanish film industry and also signed by another Oscar-winner, Pedro Almodovar. While the letter generally reflected non-official Spanish thinking, it was badly received by the social media and the Hollywood film industry. No doubt that is why Cruz and Bardem promptly back-tracked. “I’m not an expert on the situation,” said the actress in a damage-limitation letter to the newspaper America Today. She and her husband are experts in advancing their careers and have now learnt that in Hollywood anti-Zionism is unfailingly equated with antiSemitism. Whatever their personal feelings, they are unlikely to mention Gaza,
Israelis and Palestinians in the same breath or the near future.
Follow the money THE Catalans have a reputation for maintaining a mighty respect for money and knowing how to make it.

Now former president Jordi Pujol has confessed to hiding a fortune in offshore accounts while two of his sons, Jordi and Oriol - another politician - face multiple corruption accusations. Some of the very people backing a split from Spain have allegedly been robbing their fellow Catalans for decades. For the Madrid govern-ment at least, the saga arrives like rain after a drought and Mariano Rajoy can sit back and watch as the Pujol family helps to shortcircuit the independ-ence bid.

China - new kid on the block new global superstar? THE number of British expats dropping off the official statistics and saying adiós to Spain forever is increasing. There are currently 297,299 Brits listed on local population registers: a 22.8 per cent drop from last year. Years of recession with unemployment at 24.5 per cent is given as one reason for the British exodus. Thousands of Britons who headed to Spain during its decade-long building boom are heading back to the UK, currently experiencing the fastest growth in the developed world. Tortuous legal disputes with the Spanish authorities over property rights are another reason - plus changes to tax laws affecting non-Spanish residents. The new obligatory ‘law’ to complete a form to declare assets abroad has sparked huge mistrust. While the Spanish government’s objective is to

France, like Italy, is still in deep recession while Greece is crippled by its 27.3 per cent unemployment rate. Europe’s problems serve, in fact, to underline the switch in the global balance of power: how China is slowly turning into the
world superpower, expected to buy up some of its biggest companies. The Chinese tycoon, Wang Jianlin, China’s richest man, recently snapped up the Edificio España, an abandoned Madrid landmark, for €265 million. Indeed, the collapse of the market in Spain has created huge opportunities for cash-rich
companies. Last year, Asian investors spent €50 million: in the first quarter of this year, they pumped €368 million into the economy. According to Gerard Lyons, chief economist at Standard Chartered: “There’s no doubt about it now: China is the kingmaker. The past decade was characterised by three words:
Made in China. The next decade it’ll be: Bought by China.” Maybe, like the Russians before them buying up homes here, attracted by cheaper property prices, it’ll now be the turn of the Chinese - and they’ll soon be arriving in Spain through the same swing doors that the Brits are exiting. On the subject of Spain, we mustn’t forget its charities. A thriving community spirit WITHIN the daily demands of our modern, hectic lifestyles and busy agendas, time seems to fly like the wind, with many people convinced that it feels as though it passes progressively faster as the years go by. Although modern society can enjoy the benefits and advantages of many technological advances and commonly used conveniences like emailing, communicating

ARE you spending enough time doing the things that you want to do? It’s the middle of the crazy season here on the island and plenty of us are run off of our feet. working to keep up with demand, if you work in the tourist and travel industries, or hospitality or yachts. This is the month of the year when everyone loses their temper. It’s hot, we’re tired, stressed out, and trying to do twice as many things in the same amount of time. But ask yourself, why are you doing this? I’m guessing that the answer on the whole is going to be ‘to earn money’. Money buys us loads of stuff, and the most important thing it can buy us is time. So don’t forget when you’re stressing out, that the reason you’re working hard is to get

I’m lucky that I do work which I love; that means that it’s not really exactly slavery. I know plenty of people who are doing work which they don’t love; what are they trading their time for?
Are they making a good swap between spending a third of their day doing something which they don’t enjoy for money. I’ve been surprised to meet people who truly love doing a job that I would absolutely hate, so it’s a fair question, I think. We can’t speak for each other, but we can ask ourselves: am I happy doing
what I am doing? What’s brought this on, McLeod? I know you’re asking. Life’s getting more and more uncertain, isn’t it? Or maybe I’m just getting older and softer. I know that after I had my daughter my ability to cry at the drop of a hat suddenly appeared. There’s a huge amount of tragic
things going on locally, nationally and internationally, things which affect us indirectly and directly. Only this week we have had the sudden death of a wellknown and local British resident in a horrible accident on the motorway in Palma, the shock suicide of an internationally admired actor and comedian, the spread of Ebola, the increase of the conflict in Iraq and the continued tension in Palestine, and that’s just a handful of examples. On the other hand, Giant Panda triplets were born in captivity. What if everything in your life changed in an instant? Would you have regrets about how you had lived up to that point? I’ve read that people on their deathbeds tend to regret the things they didn’t do, rather than the things they did. So I’m going to keep saying ‘yes’ to opportunities, keep my heart and mind open to others and try to do my best for myself and my loved ones. I’m off for an explore. Cat owners should beware of lilies ALL parts of the lily including the stem, leaves, petals, stamens and pollen - are poisonous to cats. Even minor exposures (cat chewing on a leaf or getting pollen on fur or whiskers) can be fatal. While the exact toxin is still unidentified, cats who are not treated can quickly develop acute renal failure and die, generally within three to six days. Cats with acute renal failure typically have vomiting, depression, partial or complete loss of appetite and dehydration.

Cats who have been seen near lilies, as well as those who have definitely ingested any part of a lily, should be seen by a veterinarian immediately. Cats who are treated within 18 hours of exposure to a toxic lily generally recover. However, in cases where

When to seek medical advice if your dog or cat has a cough WHEN should you be worried if your pet is coughing? Firstly you have to distinguish coughing from other sounds. Sneezing and snoring are easy to recognise. Reverse sneezing is a sound a dog makes when the soft plate is in the wrong position, it is an inspirational sound. Coughing can be one big cough; e.g., if the dog drinks water too quickly. Or
a couple of harsh coughs if something gets stuck in the throat. This is functional and will cease as soon as the throat is cleared. Coughing can be dry, persistent and not productive. These are irritations of the throat and trachea and in dogs are commonly caused by kennel cough. Kennel cough is a syndrome caused by para-influenza viruses and the bordetella
bacteria. It is very contagious; it just needs one dog coughing in the direction of another to transmit the disease. Hence the name kennel cough. It is an infection of the larynx and trachea and will need treatment. Cats could be coughing due to hair in the throat, although they rather tend to vomit. They may suffer from feline asthma, which could be due to allergy,
which gives them a dry, harsh cough. Coughing can be productive, which means mucus needs to come up. This is due to bronchitis. Be aware that dogs and cats will cough up the mucus but then swallow it, so you do not see it. Bronchitis needs treatment for the infection and products that make it easier to cough mucus up. Cat flu can progress to
bronchitis. Coughing can be present only after exercise or only at night. This is suggestive of heart disease. This cough is not productive and often the dog pants a lot. Work environment could affect sleeping WORKING in an office with no windows could result in less sleep. New research shows that those in windowless rooms could lose an average of 46 minutes of sleep a night compared to those who sit near windows. The findings were published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine which suggested that the working environment is a factor in setting the body’s own internal clock. The study was carried out by researchers from the University of Illinois, Northwestern University in Chicago and the Hwa-Hsia Institute of Technology in Taiwan. They recruited office employees, with half of them spending most of the day in a

Cutting down sodium intake THE new EU dietary guidelines have lowered the recommendation for daily sodium intake to six grams per day so we all have to work on ways to cut more sodium (salt) out of our diets. Here are a few tips: Rinse and drain all tinned veg - the brine contains a lot of sodium as a preservative. Taste food before adding salt. Use herbs and spices instead of salt to liven up a dish. Limit eating in restaurants, they tend to use a lot of salt to make dishes tastier. Choose the low or reduced sodium option on ready-made meals. Check the label for nutrition facts - some foods, even cereals, contain more salt than you might imagine. Make your own salad dressings - the readymade dressings often contain huge amounts of salt to counteract the vinegar used. Check the ingredient list and look for synonyms of salt like MSG, disodium phosphate, sodium alginate and sodium nitrate; they all mean salt. Be careful with seasoning blends even if they don’t mention salt in their titles; lemon pepper can still be very high in sodium content.

Five ways to make a nocook seafood ceviche
CEVICHE is a Latin American dish consisting mainly of meat or seafood which has been cooked using only the acidity of vinegar or citrus juice much like ‘boquerones en vinagre’ which can be found all over Spain. First of all sushi-grade fish is necessary but it’s also acceptable to use frozen if it is high quality. Cut into thin strips and then put in a citrus or vinegar marinade for around 45 minutes (depending on the thickness of the strips). Add a few herbs and spices to taste and it’s ready. Scallop ceviche is made with finely shredded and unsweetened coconut flakes which add an unexpected texture and flavour to the spicy dish.
CEVICHE: A simple summer food. White fish ceviche verde is made with a variety of fish for a mix of flavours and textures; combine this with avocado, olives, chopped spring onions and cherry tomatoes.
Octopus ceviche is for the more adventurous but it is a taste that goes well with a citrus marinade - for extra crunch and colour just add peppers. Ceviche tacos are an
excellent barbecue item to liven up the meat based meal. Just make any sort of ceviche and serve it in a taco shell. Scandinavian ceviche is made with smoked fish instead of fresh.

T’S sweltering outside but with a breeze through an open door from a shaded terrace it’s bearable, with a cool infusion to sip while writing next week’s article. As explained below there are several things prepared from garden plants that are very enjoyable during the hot summer days. Lemon verbena infusions A few leaves of this attractively smelling and tasting herb in hot water, best not quite boiling, yields a very refreshing hot or cold summer beverage. It’s a good idea to keep a large jugful in the fridge for mid-
REFRESHING: Chilled tomato gazpacho soup. afternoon drinking before and after a siesta. Rosemary, mint, rose petal and olive leaf infusions This a great mix for a healthy, re-energising and life extending breakfast cuppa. See the book ‘Living Well From Our

Mint soup and infusions Entertaining a group of friends last night we started with a soup that is very easy to make and immediately soothing on a hot sultry day or night. Just harvest, or buy, a moderately sized ridge cucumber for each person then put into a chopper/blender machine with unsweetened yoghurt, fresh lemon juice, chopped mint leaves and salt and pepper to taste. Once a smooth creamy liquid is
produced place in a jug or bowl in the fridge for a few hours before serving. Tomatoes Summer favourites include chilled tomato gazpacho soup, fresh baked bread with an olive oil, tomato and crushed garlic spread and an Andalucian Remojon salad made with thin slices of oranges and tomatoes, chopped salt cod, home cured olives and a dressing of olive oil and dry sherry or Moriles wine. Coastal valley dews When I leave at day break for a cool comfortable walk there is
heavy dew on the leaves of shiny plants, paths and cars parked in the road. Overnight it had cooled off and rehydrated plants. However it is not sufficient to meet the daily needs of plants, so regular watering is a must for many plants with continuing drought conditions. By 8.30am the dew has gone as an already hot sun rises over our local mountain. By the way although central Spain has had a good few storms this summer the landscape around Madrid and Segovia were parched brown when I assisted two weeks ago week as a volunteer at a Vaughan Town Week where Spaniards pay big money to practice talking English for 84 hours in six days. Volunteers are sought with a wide range of British and international English accents. By the way, this is a good way to give something back to
Spain for the good weather and gardens, and make new friends. Interestingly with only half the level of humidity and good breezes, Madrid and Segovia were much more comfortable places to be than the holiday Costas, and everywhere roses were blooming heavily. FAMILIES in the Basque Country are to benefit from an agreement recently negotiated between a bank and the Basque Government. Kutxabank has agreed to transfer to Eusko Jaurlaritza (Basque Government) 100 homes which are to be rented out to low-income families. As stated in the agreement, the properties can only be rented out to people or families whose annual income a year before applying for one of the transferred properties did not exceed â‚Ź21,100. The lessees that fulfil all the necessary requirements are to pay rents that under no circumstances can exceed 30 per cent of their annual income, which means they will not pay more than â‚Ź400,

including community fees and the land value tax. In addition, the annual rent is to be subject to subsequent adjustments based on the consumer price index published by the Spanish National Statistics Institute. The lease agreement will only be valid for a term of three years and Eusko Jaurlaritza has committed itself to maintaining the transferred properties in good condition and to hire all the necessary services. The agreement reached between the government and the bank includes a clause stating the homes are to be returned in the same condition as before transfer. Some properties are brand-new and have two or three bedrooms.

Home sales up in June for fourth consecutive month PROPERTY sales in June increased by 8.8 per cent compared to June 2013, reaching as many as 26,076 transactions, according to the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE). This is the fourth yearover-year increase in a row after similar
increments in March (22 per cent), April (5 per cent) and May (5.4 per cent), putting an end to 10 consecutive months of year-over-year contractions. The surge can be attributed to the 17.4 per cent increase in the sale of second-hand properties, which amounted to 16,257 transactions. However, sales of new properties dropped by 3 per cent on a year-overyear basis, reaching 9,819 transactions. As much as 90.5 per cent of all properties sold in June 2014 were private residences.
Sales of private housing increased by 9.9 per cent compared to 2013 (23,596 transactions), while the sales of subsidised properties dropped by 1.4 per cent compared to last year, only reaching 2,480 transactions. Most of the sales were registered in Valencia (96), Canary Islands (87) and the Balearic Islands (81). And Andalucia continued to rank first in terms of property sales during June 2014 with 5,220 transactions, followed by Catalonia (3,961) and Madrid (3,789).

Kings Cup anot THE 33rd Edition of Copa Del Rey MAPFRE ended last Saturday with a race for each of the participating classes. Participants enjoyed excellent wind and weather conditions throughout the week-long event, though there was a bit of an irregular wind on the last day of the competition which forced organisers to reduce the sailing schedule to a single race. The lucky winners were Shockwave (Gaastra IRC 0) and Quantum Racing (Barclays 52 Super Series) from the United States of America, Hurakan (Gaastra IRC 1) and Lelagain (Nespresso X 35) from Italy, Bronenosec (Gazprom Swan 60) from Russia and Rats on Fire (BMW ORC 1), Movistar (BMW ORC 2) and Noticia (Herbalife J80) from Spain. Gaastra IRC 0 Winning the title in the Gaastra IRC 0 was no small feat and all participants faced fierce competition. Four out of the five Mini Maxi boats walked away with at least one of the 11 races held. The top three teams made it all the way to the final competition day with a mere

Defending champion Quantum Racing (USA) was able to stay at the top of the scoring board for most of the competition thanks to the impressive skills of its crew. Even though
Quantum Racing did not achieve the largest amount of individual victories, the team still managed to be crowned champions in their category. Runner-up was Ran (Sweden) of Niklas Zennström. BMW ORC 1 Rafa Carbonell’s Swan 45 Rats of Fire (Spain) walked
away with the title in the BMW ORC 1 class. The boat skippered by Manuel Doreste won five of the 10 races it participated in and snatched its fourth Copa Del Rey title in four years (2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014). BMW ORC 2 The best results of the entire fleet were achieved by Enrique Terol’s Sinergia 40 Movistar. It won eight out of the 10 races it participated in. The Galician team has so far won six Copa Del Rey MAPFRE (2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2013 and 2014). Skipper Pedro Campos added a seventh title to his impressive winning streak and set a new record in the regatta (1993, 1995, 2002, 2006, 2009, 2013 and 2014). Nespresso X-35 Alessandro Solerio’s Lelagain was crowned champion of his category for second time in four years (2010 and 2014). Though the team came in seventh in the last race, it was
more than enough for the Italians to walk away with the title. Herbalife J80 Jose Maria Torcida’s Noticia pulled off a stunning and overwhelming victory in the Herbalife J80 class. Torcida, who was crowned world champion in 2007 and 2010, won the title with a 20-point difference from the runner-up. The winners were presented with their awards by King Felipe VI himself in an event held at Ses Volets. The 33rd Edition of Copa Del Rey Mapfre saw a myriad of celebrities from the world of sports, politics, music and television arriving in Palma, including President of the Balearic Government Jose Ramon Bauza, Mayor of Palma Mateo Isern, former models and entrepreneurs Fiona Ferrer and Antonia Dell’Atte and international model and actor Andres Velencoso. The next edition of the event is August 1 to 8, 2105.

King Felipe VI skippered TP52 Aifos in Copa del Rey MAPFRE KING Felipe VI attended the award ceremony of the 33rd Edition of the Copa Del Rey MAPFRE without Queen Letizia. The Queen has not attended the official award ceremony since 2009, when it was presided over by former King Juan Carlos I and King Felipe was still Prince of Asturias. Following the event, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia went out to dinner at La Cantina CN, in Palma. The King himself participated in the sporting event and skippered a TP52 of the Spanish Navy called Aifos. After arriving in Palma, the King was welcomed by President of the Royal Nautical Club of Palma Javier Sanz and Territorial Delegate of MAPFRE Baleares Jose Antonio Continente.
