Home beaches are top for Spaniards SPANIARDS prefer to holiday on Spanish beaches.

Not only do Spanish holidaymakers prefer local beaches, according to a survey recently conducted by atrapalo.com, but there has also been a 20 per cent increase in hotel reservations when compared to last year with an average price of €681.

Some of the reasons explaining

Spaniards’ preferences include easy access by car and good weather conditions.

Data shows that reservations made in advance have also increased by 10 and 22 per cent when compared to five years ago when the economic crisis first broke out, which seems to be indicative of the market’s recovery.

Mallorca still ranks high among the preferred destinations for tourists. In fact, an estimated 14 per cent of Spanish holidaymakers will travel to Mallorca during the summer, according to a study carried out by lowcostholidays.com, compared to the 10 per cent that prefer holidaying on the island of Menorca.

Manacor pays tribute to Nadal

MANACOR paid tribute to its most famous tennis player, Rafael Nadal, at the Club de Tenis de Manacor where they recognised his spectacular trajectory in the world of tennis in 2013.

Nadal received a pleasant surprise in his own ‘home’ when he went in for training for the American Tour and saw a huge canvas with all his achievements detailed on it. The impromptu ceremony was presided over by Satu Cantero, sports promoter, and many

fans were there to give him encouragement for his upcoming commitments.

Nadal is taking advantage of a few days of rest during his training schedule and was seen spending the afternoon with some of his friends from the Inter de Manacor de futbol.

Just last week a French magazine brought out an article entitled ‘the secrets of a giant’ which was all about Nadal’s rise in the world of tennis over the last few years.

Asses, donkeys and mules ASSES, donkeys and mules are to be employed by the island authorities to clean up the streams and small rivers in Mallorca.

Biel Company, councillor for the Environment and Agriculture, has announced the experimental project of using “old fashioned” methods in order to clean up some of the islands waterways.

The project will be managed by the Natura Parc foundation in conjunction with the Water Resources Company and will consist of simply letting the animals graze freely on the banks of the waterways. In this way the areas in question will be cleaned up in a more natural way (previously armies of council workers were sent in with

strimmers and leaf blowers) while at the same time giving the animals food, a job and purpose in life.

Biel commented that this year, due to the heavy rains, the banks of the island’s waterways were very overgrown and needed a reduction in the amount of biomass (plants) that had sprung up.

N the first Sunday of August, the small town of Catoira in Galicia celebrates the unusual festival of the Romeria Vikinga, in which the locals all dress up as either Viking warriors or townspeople of the era, and do battle.

The spectacular re-enactment of the Viking invasions of a thousand years ago has been going on in the town since 1960.

Thousands of tourists, both national and international, will descend on the town to watch this entertaining local fiesta, which has been declared of international interest.

Royal holidays fuel controversy SPAIN’S Royal Couple should not pay for their holidays with taxpayers’ money.

This is the controversial opinion recently voiced by representatives of Mes per Mallorca (More for Mallorca), a left-wing political coalition created in the summer of 2010.

The coalition also called for public access to the Marivent Palace, which is the official summer residence of former King Juan Carlos and former Queen Sofia. The palace includes a home for King Felipe VI and two small villas for his daughters, according to unofficialroyalty.com.

According to the Mes per Mallorca, the royal couple should pay for their own holidays “because the 15-day holiday of the royal family and their guests costs island residents more than €1.3 million a year in maintenance costs.”

museum and the green areas all year round.”

After it was confirmed that Felipe VI and Queen Letizia would holiday in Mallorca to “rest for a few days” at Marivent Palace, Santiago said “it is necessary to get rid of this anachronistic and economically unsustainable privilege.”

She emphasised that “every year the citizens of the Balearic Islands pay more than €1.3 million to maintain Marivent Palace, which can only be enjoyed by the royal family for a few days.” Santiago also said she has repeatedly requested the local government to open the doors of Marivent Palace to all citizens and to give them access to the museum.

Built in 1923, Marivent Palace originally belonged to Egyptian artist and art collector Juan de Saridakis and was later a museum until 1973.

NEWS Retail businesses not affected by economic stagnation RETAIL sales on the Balearic Islands increased by 0.3 per cent in June.

As reported last Tuesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE), retail businesses on the islands were not affected by the economic stagnation witnessed elsewhere in Spain.

In June, nine Spanish Autonomous Communities saw an increase in their retail sales compared to 2013, while sales decreased in the rest of the country. The most significant increases were witnessed in Cantabria (+5.2 per cent), Canary Islands (+4.4 per cent) and Navarra (+2.1 per cent), while the sharpest drops were registered in Madrid (-2.7 per cent) and Aragon (-2.1 per cent).

According to INE, employment in retail businesses on the Balearic Islands grew by 2.7 per cent in June, closely followed by the Canary Islands with 2.2 per cent and it decreased in six Autonomous Communities during June, especially in Madrid (-1.1 per cent), Murcia (-1 per cent) and Asturias (-0.9 per cent).

Marinas almost full MALLORCA’S marinas are 90 per cent full despite the raising of some of the fees.

Foreigners are the ones asking for the most places in the Balearic marinas.

Although the marinas are 90 per cent full, the same as last year, this year there is no waiting list to get a mooring slip, which prices have not risen since last year.

The fees which have risen are the ones concerning recreational craft, ANADE (Association of Recreational Nautical Installations in Balearics) has recognised the problems that this has brought to the sector.

Port Adriano has hardly noticed the recession this year as the majority of boats moored there are owned by foreigners, mainly Germans and Isabel Teruel, president of ANADE, commented that it was normal to have a high occupational rate in summer, but that the aim of ANADE was to extend the season and have boats there all year round.

Burglar is terribly injured A BURGLAR broke both legs and a vertebra after jumping from the balcony of a residence he had broken into.

The burglar and his accomplice broke into a Palma residence with the intention of robbing it but were caught red handed by the homeowner.

Not knowing what to do, one of the burglars jumped off the balcony and unfortunately fractured both his legs and a vertebra when he hit the floor.

National Police officers arrived on the scene and launched a search to find the burglars but their efforts were vain. They had both managed to flee.

However, the police later found the injured burglar at Son Espases Hospital due to do his extensive injuries.

The other burglar was also placed under arrest.

Absolute disgust at violence in Manacor THE Govern (Balearic regional government) and the Manacor Council were among the many Balearic public entities which maintained a minute of silence in protest at the latest domestic violence killing.

Isabel Barcelo, 47, lost her life in Felanitx, allegedly at the hands of her ex-partner Nicasio Garcia Cortes, 53, who stabbed her to death in her home.

The two were a couple for around four years but had split up recently,

by Isabel’s decision, and Nicasio, apparently, could not accept this decision. He went to her house and stabbed her to death.

She was found by Nicasio’s son who was in such a state of shock that he had to be taken to hospital.

A neighbour who heard his screams at the sight of so much blood called the emergency services who were only able to certify her death when they arrived.

The police arrived promptly and arrested the killer, who was still in the house, and took him to the cells

THE holidays of a million tourists could be severely affected by a planned baggage handlers strike on the island of Mallorca.

The handlers are upset by unfulfilled promises made to them affecting wages and hours. They are threatening to strike on nine separate days during the busy tourism month of August on the sunny island.

The affected dates proposed are 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16 and 17th of the month. If it goes ahead it is expected to cause long delays at Son Sant Joan airport. Talks are set to be held in order to resolve the situation.

PRISON WATCHTOWER: A regular sight for the ex-president.

Ex-president has started sentence JAUME MATAS, expresident of the Govern (regional government) will share his life with 590 other prisoners for the foreseeable future.

Matas has been sent to the Torredondo prison in

Segovia to serve his sentence for his part in the corruption scandal which rocked the island in 2008 and 2009. In March of 2012 he was found guilty of 12 of the accusations and sentenced to six years and two months in prison.

The case concerned a variety of crimes; among others were bribery, several counts of misappropriation of public funds, several counts of blackmailing and falsifying public, official documents.

The prison where he will be serving his time is

close to Madrid, which is where he now lives, and considered to be one of the quietest of the prisons in the area due to its reduced number of inmates - all the other prisons in, or near, Madrid have well over 1,000 inmates.

Although quiet the prison does house some other ‘illustrious’ prisoners like Rafael Vera, exsecretary of state, who started his own private war against ETA or Angel Carromero, ex-secretary general of the PP Nuevas Generaciones, serving time for manslaughter.

THE Balearic Islands Government is to pay more than €6,000 in compensation.

A Provincial Court sentenced the Health, Family and Welfare Department of the local government to pay €6,324.75 in compensation to the family of a blind woman suffering from Alzheimer who died two years ago without the support she required.

The Social Affairs, Promotion and Immigration Department concluded in December 2010 that the late Ana Perez Viudes could not fend for herself and needed support to perform the most basic everyday activities, according to Spain’s Dependency Law. Passed in December 2006, the law seeks to protect citizens unable to fend for themselves and clearly defines three degrees of dependency based on the condition or disease affecting each individual person.

Ana Perez Viudes was determined to be a third degree case.

The Social Affairs Department drafted an individual attention programme (PIA) in May 2011 which included a monthly €393.13 payment to the woman’s daughter.

However, the PIA was never approved.

According to the ruling, the PIA has to be approved within three months after a citizen’s degree of dependency has been determined, which the local government failed to do.

The failure to greenlight her PIA resulted in the late Ana Perez Viudes ‘being unable to benefit from the support she had every right to.’

Balearia buy Juan Carlos’ yacht for €2.2 million BALEARIA has confirmed that the reason they bought the royal family’s old yacht, the Foners, previously named the Fortuna, was because of its extremely powerful motors.

In a press release issued by the ferry company they state that the interest they have in the boat is centred on its five powerful Rolls Royce engines which produce 5,000 Kw each, which allow for a top speed of more than 70 knots, and use a gas-oil fuel mix.

Balearia underscored the point that it has been working on a joint project with Rolls Royce since the end of 2012 and are involved in engineering studies concerning the conversion to gas of the Balearia fleet; it goes on to say that they are looking into whether the turbines on the Foners could be converted to use liquid gas only and then transfer the technology onto their ‘fast ferries.’

They have bought the yacht for €2.2 million.

KING’S OLD BOAT: To be used for tourism.

Adolfo Utor, president of the company, went on to comment that the use of liquid gas (LNG) would reduce the company’s fleet’s emissions of CO2 by around 25 per cent.

Once the Foners officially becomes the property of the Balearia company they will “re-motorise” it

with more conventional engines which produce 4,000 Kw and which allow for a maximum speed of around 20 knots, but use much less fuel and will need much less maintenance.

The yacht will be used for tourism purposes.

Chinese national arrested A CHINESE national was arrested in Magaluf for buying and selling stolen property.

The Guardia Civil launched an investigation following a complaint by a British man who said a €5,000 watch was stolen from his property.

The police discovered that the Chinese national, owner of a restaurant on Punta Ballena Street in Magaluf, would buy and sell stolen property he allegedly obtained from Nigerian women. The women would rob tourists in Magaluf and then sell the detained the stolen items.

Following a thorough search at his property, police officers seized the stolen watch belonging to the Briton, 15 cell phones, iPads, cameras, purses, other watches and €5,000 in cash.

Punta Ballena in the sights of justice after a tourist is stabbed PUNTA BALLENA is still in the spotlight after a tourist was stabbed and 11 prostitutes were jailed - all in one week.

The stabbed tourist was Italian and the 11 prostitutes were all Nigerian.

The Italian was on the beach with a friend of his near Punta Ballena when one of his

countrymen simply approached him and stabbed him in his left leg before running away, according to his friend who was an eye witness to the bizarre event. The injured man was attended to by the emergency medical services which had to stop the bleeding before taking him to the hospital to have

stitches. The police searched, but did not find, the aggressor and are still looking into the motive for the stabbing.

The 11 prostitutes which were jailed over the course of the week were all involved in the same sort of violent scam on tourists.

Housing stock in Balearics reduced THE housing stock of the Balearic Islands decreased by 2.4 per cent in 2013.

According to the latest figures regarding empty properties released by the Spanish Ministry of Development, the decrease witnessed on the Balearic Islands was not as sharp as in the rest of the country.

The sharpest decreases were registered in Extremadura (-92.4 per

cent), Cantabria (-35.8 per cent) and Navarra (-22.5 per cent), followed by Murcia (-5.9 per cent), Galicia (-5.7 per cent), Andalucia (-5.6 per cent) and Aragon (-5.3 per cent).

As stated by the Ministry, three autonomous communities accounted for 49.2 per cent of the total national stock of empty properties in 2013, namely Valencia, Andalucia and Catalonia.

By the end of 2013 there were 563,908 new unsold properties, 3.3 per cent less than in 2012.

Couple die in sailing boat fire Hot sports AN elderly Dutch couple died in a fire that broke out in a sailing boat anchored off Portocolom Port.

The fire is believed to have started at midnight last Friday, though its causes are yet to be determined.

The remains of the 63year-old woman and the

67-year-old man were discovered by Manacor and Felanitx firefighters who were trying to put out the flames.

Once the fire was extinguished, the sailing boat was brought to the port where it later capsized and sank as a result of the damages it had suffered.

A FIRE broke out at the Germans Escales Sport Centre in Palma on Tuesday afternoon.

The fire, which is believed to have been caused by sparks flying from a welding job being done in the centre’s plant room, caused a great deal of smoke.

A dream Balearic crime goes come true down by 6 per cent

REAL MALLORCA presented its new signing for the upcoming football season to the press and delighted fans.

Adolfo Enriquez, nicknamed Fofo, signed a two-year contract and the 24-year-old striker is expected to help the team return to the First Division of La Liga with his goal-scoring potential.

Palma-born Fofo lived in Alicante and had played until now for SD Ponferradina, another team playing in Spain’s Second Division. He made 33 appearances last season and scored 10 goals.

“We had to wait a long time, but I knew I would end up coming

here sooner or later,” he said.

“I had a lot of offers to be honest but I decided to play for Mallorca because I had always wanted to come here, ever since I was a little kid. I am proud to wear this shirt and I hope we can do important things this year,” he added at his first press conference.

Fofo refused to make any predictions as to how many goals he would score next season.

“At the beginning of the season I do not think about how many goals I am going to score. The more the better, but the important thing is helping the team,” he remarked.

BALEARIC government delegate, Teresa Palmer, has commented that criminality in general has gone down by six and a half per cent on the islands since the beginning of the year with 29,323 felonies and misdemeanours.

Palmer did, however, underscore her concern about the situation with gender violence with three killings so far this year.

The government delegate also pointed out that this is the second year in a row that crime has gone down; it went down by two and a half per cent in 2013.

Denouncing this sort of behaviour is the only way to combat this social scourge.”

She went on to underline that even if the victim does not make a formal complaint, then it is up to the people around the victim to bring the case to the attention of the authorities. She reminded those present of the existence of the free phone line (016) which anyone in that situation can call, “they should know that they have the support of society,” she said.

Referring to other crimes Palmer commented that violent robberies were down by 18.2 per

cent up to June of this year and that within this group, of violent robberies, house breaking was down by 14.6 per cent. Muggings were down by 7 per cent and street crime down by five and a half per cent.

Palmer ended her run down of crimes by congratulating the Guardia Civil and the National Police for their efforts in making the islands a safer place and for their special plans and operations which had gone a long way to the reduction in key areas.

Hepatitis kills 1.4m people every year RADIO STATION: Contracts being investigated.

SON LLATZER Hospital in Palma treats between 120 and 150 patients suffering from viral hepatitis every year.

Health councillor Marti Sansaloni visited Son Llatzer on Monday June 28 (World Hepatitis Day) to visit an informational table set up by representatives of the Mallorca Association of Hepatitis C Patients

(AMAHC). World Hepatitis Day is observed in countries around the world since 2010 and represents an “opportunity for education and greater understanding of viral hepatitis as a global public health problem,” according to the official website of the World Health Organisation.

AMAHC offered information about

the disease, its causes, prevention, control and related diseases.

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver usually caused by a viral infection that kills approximately 1.4 million people around the world every year.

It is estimated that between 130 and 150 million people suffer from the disease and that “350,000 patients die every year from hepatic conditions associated with Hepatitis C,” said local government sources talking to noticiasmallorca.es.

There is now an antiviral treatment that has achieved “good results in 50 to 90 per cent of cases.” It has shown to be effective in “limiting cirrhosis and liver cancer and that is why an early detection is important,” they commented.

THE Guardia Civil in Mallorca have placed Carlos Delgado Truyol, Maria Jose Merino Ruiz and Antonia Pastrana Balboa at the head of the Radio Calvia fraud.

The investigating officers have now finished their analysis of the radio station’s contracts up to 2011 and have concluded that Delgado, then the mayor of Calvia, to be responsible for the fraud.

As well as Delgado, the analysis of the contracts also points to Merino, who was his chief of staff, and to Pastrana, who was the director of the station which benefited to the tune of €120,000 per year through the illegal and fraudulent contracts.

The illegal contracts which the case makes reference to are for services rendered to the radio station and which, in some cases, were paid for before they even happened.

The instructing magistrate has now asked for the tax office to look into the contracts to see if there are any irregularities from their point of view.

As soon as prosecution has decided on the final list of who they want to call on the witness list and which contracts they want to include in the process, the trial can begin.

The Guardia Civil are still investigating other aspects of the scandal.

THE Mallorca Rocks press release said Rudimental were one of the best live acts on the planet.

It sounded a bit too good to be true, but it turned out to be exactly on the money. A 10 strong live band stormed the stage on Tuesday night, if you weren’t there then you really missed out on a great show.

Next Tuesday is Bastille, who were the biggest selling new British act in 2013. The press release says they smashed it in the States, and have been crowned the ‘British Breakthrough Act’ of the year.

Drug dealer arrested GUARDIA CIVIL officers in Can Picafort detained a man for crimes against public health.

The Moroccan national, 29, had been the target of a police investigation launched weeks ago to crack down on drug trafficking.

The detained would reportedly prowl the local tourist areas looking for potential clients. Once a deal was struck he would take them to a deserted location to sell them the illegal drugs without running the risk of being caught by the police.

Following a house search conducted at his residence, the police seized 30 grams of cocaine, an electronic scale, drug paraphernalia and €3,500 in cash.

Anti-corruption inspectors clean up the Balearic Islands BETWEEN them Balearic politicians have accumulated prison sentences of more than 163 years.

The first case broken open by this crack team was the Andratx case, then came the Palma Arena (for which Matas was convicted), the Can Domenge land scandal, the Son Oms and many, many other corruption cases - most involving quite high ranking government officials.

Adoption blocked at the last minute TWO Spanish couples are trapped in Ethiopia in the middle of an adoption process and asking for help from the Ministry of the Exterior.

The two couples, Sonia and Ruben, and Silvia and Jeronimo, arrived in Ethiopia in March to finalise the adoption process of two children (one per couple); they have been working towards this for four years.

The Ethiopian authorities have blocked the process at the last minute due, they say, to discrepancies between the province, where the orphanage is located, and the central ministry.

The two families are requesting that the Spanish Ministry of the Exterior take action to help them with this situation. “We are fighting to keep them out of the orphanage,” claim

The two families landed on Ethiopian soil on March 31 and more than 120 days later they are still fighting for something that they thought was a ‘done deal’, which is why they now need the intervention of the government to resolve the situation. One mother commented, via email “we know the problem is with

the Ethiopian Government but everyone is saying until our government gets involved they’ll do nothing.”

The conflict, which is barring the two children from leaving the country, is a supposed falsification of the paperwork on behalf of the orphanage.

So far the Spanish Government has made no public comment .

Grandparents at risk of depression SPANISH grandparents play an important role in the lives of their grandchildren.

According to the Spanish Geriatrics and Gerontology Society (SEGG), Spanish grandparents spend on average six hours a day with their grandchildren. SEGG attributes the phenomenon to the economic crisis and the problems most couples have reconciling their work and private life.

While acknowledging the

positive effects grandparents have on their grandchildren’s lives, SEGG also warns against the potential risks child-care chores could have on the elderly.

There is no denying grandparents play a fundamental role in a child’s upbringing, teaching meaningful values and essential traditions.

Furthermore, spending time with their grandchildren helps many grandparents fight loneliness and feelings of uselessness, while keeping

them physically active.

All these benefits notwithstanding, SEGG says some grandparents may feel they are actually “working” instead of “spending time with their grandchildren”, which, in turn, can result in “stress, anxiety or depression” and turn what should be an enjoyable experience into a burdensome task.

To nip any potential crisis in the bud, SEGG advises mothers and fathers to never argue with

Procession of black gowns in favour of free justice for all MORE than 1,000 lawyers took to the streets of Madrid to protest against the government’s new justice law.

Dressed in their traditional black gowns the procession of lawyers was led by the senior members of the official college of law and representatives from all 83 colleges of law. The march went from the Madrid Law College and stopped traffic on Cibeles Square for half an hour.

When the protest was over Carlos Carnicer, head of the general assembly of lawyers, commented that they had taken this action in order to bring attention to the matter of a lawyer’s right to defend a client even if they cannot pay.

The lawyers associations claim that the new law endangers the 42,500 public defenders that currently defend those who cannot afford a private lawyer. The government has cut the budget for these ‘free’ defences by

Celebrities join in saving Arctic SPANISH celebrities from the worlds of music, film, sports and fashion have all got together to join a Greenpeace campaign to save the Arctic.

Alejandro Sanz, Malu, Alex Gonzalez, Ariel Rot and many other famous faces have heeded the warning from Greenpeace about the melting polar ice caps and posed for a publicity session wearing the campaign tshirt after which they all signed the petition to create a sanctuary which would protect the threatened area.

A Greenpeace spokesperson has commented that many countries are seeing the polar ice melt as an opportunity to enter the area and search for oil and other natural resources which would destroy the fragile environment.

petition makes special mention of the activities which they see as destructive and among these are industrial fishing and oil exploration.

The majority of the celebrities have asked people to “be responsible for their children’s sake” as any measures taken now will have far reaching effects on future generations.

Javier Bardem, actor, commented that he thought it was important to get the message out to society that we live on a planet on which actions have far reaching consequences and what is done in one area can be felt many thousands of miles away.

Proposed university reform measures SOME of Spain’s autonomous communities are set against reforms to bring in three-year university degrees.

Asturias and the Basque Country strongly disagree with a royal decree allowing Spanish students to complete a degree in three years (180 credits), said Education Minister Jose Ignacio Wert after a meeting with representatives of Spain’s autonomous communities to analyse the university reform.

“There were some disagreements and Asturias and the Basque Country are opposed to the idea,” said Wert.

He does not rule out including financing and governance to the proposed university reform.

Asturias and the Basque Country argue that three-year university degrees would increase costs for students.

In addition, they are opposed to Spanish universities having two different systems, namely four-year bachelor’s degrees with a one-year master’s and three-year bachelor’s degrees with two-year master’s.

Asturias authorities say the proposed change is “precipitate” and argue that more time is required to analyse the results of the system currently used before making such a profound change.

“There should not be two models coexisting in the system. We must choose one,” said General Director for Universities and

Research in Asturias, Miriam Cueto.

“We must first analyse the degrees and then decide if ‘corrections’ are necessary,” she remarked.

On the other hand, Education councillor in Castilla and Leon, Juan Jose Mateos, said the decree was a positive idea, a stance shared by Cataluña.

“This decision was made 10 years too late.

We have always advocated three-year bachelor’s degrees and two-year master’s. The decree is a step forward towards university autonomy,” said University and Research Secretary in Cataluña, Antoni Castella. He says Catalan universities will offer three-year degrees by 2015.

Mr. Linares gained his inspiration from British ice cream genius Charlie Francis who is the creator of a fluorescent ice.

Mr. Linares is currently working on two other new ice creams, one to hopefully react to ultraviolet lighting whilst the other is expected to turn from white to pink whilst being eaten.

The ice cream is currently available only in the chef’s ice cream shop in the town of Calella de Mar, in the eastern province of Barcelona.

With his new colour changing ice cream ready to be sold, Mr. Linares is now hoping to find buyers to sell the ice cream abroad.

Some studies warning against excessive showering daily SHOWERING every day may not be such a good idea after all.

Some experts warn that the excess of water and soap may be detrimental to the skin.

In fact, there are recent studies that advise against the daily shower.

A study published by Dr Richard L. Gallo, Professor of Medicine and Paediatrics and Chief of the Division of

Dermatology at the University of California claims that the outermost layer of the epidermis - known as stratum corneum - can be damaged by an excess of water and soap. This layer forms a barrier that protects the skin’s underlying tissue from chemicals, dehydration and infection.

On the other hand,

Vicente Alonso Useo, Dermatologist of the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology says that the frequency with which people should shower depends on every individual case.

€1.9 million for mobile phones THE Spanish Government, which is making huge cutbacks to all other areas, is to spend €1.4 million on renovating the mobile phone and ADSL contracts for its delegates.

Congress has put the service out to public tender and, initially, the contract will last until 2016, which could mean a total expenditure of €1.9 million.

The government will also be putting out to tender the contract for the supply of diesel and petrol to the delegates’ official cars.

According to a spokesperson, the objective is to fix the costs for the

foreseeable future in the areas of communications and transport.

The company with the winning bid for the contract will have to provide a guaranteed service, and maintenance, to 650 lines, which will be broken down into 425 top-of-the-range smartphones and 225 basic smartphones as well as providing all the backup materials like chargers and extra SIM cards.

At the end of the contract the mobiles will have to be ‘freed’ and will pass to being owned by Congress.

As far as the ADSL lines go, they will have to provide more than 350 lines dotted around the whole of Spain as well as any necessary maintenance.

The budget for the petrol and diesel contract will not go above €66,550 including IVA, according to government sources.

A FALSE belief about salesmen is that you need the gift of the gab to succeed.

If this is your view then selling as a career isn’t for you. All you will do is talk yourself out of sales.

One of my favourite expressions is, ‘you will get what you want only when you convince the customer that he is going to get what he wants.’

The Lord in His wisdom gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason. Most of us can ignore such advice, salesmen dismiss it at their peril. The professional salesman listens intently to his client’s needs.

He will learn as much about him as he can, including his likely budget; he then sells him the solution. The deal is closed, everyone is happy.

LISTEN: The best salespeople listen to what the client wants.

Salesmen fail because they are too focused on what they want to sell rather than what the customer wants to buy. The salesman won’t listen, the client walks.

Another misconception is that salesmen are deceitful. Many are but that works two ways. Every salesperson knows the maxim; ‘buyers are liars.’ Deception rarely works. If it does both you and the client loses and you are in the wrong business.

People buy people: the first thing to sell is yourself. If the client takes a dislike to you it is pointless to try and sell your product. You have already lost the sale.

A buying decision is rarely based on logic, emotion drives the sale.

Very often the purchase is bought because it makes a statement about the buyer, it appeals to vanity. If cars and much else were bought on price and logic the choice available would be much narrowed down.

Finally, it is pointless to present your service to anyone but the decision maker. If the decision maker is not present then you shouldn’t be either. Avoid a situation in which the decision to buy is deferred. Better to take the order with the guarantee that it will be cancelled in the event of buyer’s wobble.

First, each apartment does not have 52 owners. All 10 timeshare flats have one owner: the timeshare company. The individuals hold contracts with the company to use the flat for a week or two, but the company is the owner. So your Community must proceed against the real owner, who is a member of the Community, to recover the debt.

We are told to eat our five-a-day of fruit and vegetables, but this can be quite an expense for many families. But then on the other hand, 300 million tonnes of fruit and vegetables are thrown away each year simply because their shape is not pleasing to the eye.

Wonky carrots, not-perfect

Food is life. And to give customers a better chance of a healthy one, the French supermarket chain has decided to buy all the ‘undesirable’ food from their growers (the food that usually ends up in the bin) and is selling it off at prices 30 per cent cheaper than normal. Where have all the people got to then?

YOU read about the influx of tourists at the airports and the hotels, crowing about the increase in numbers and how well everything is going.

The majority of people that work and live on the Costa del Sol would disagree with the number-crunchers and tell you that so far this is the worst year for tourism that they can remember.

Hotels that go down the ‘all inclusive’ route must carry much of the blame, due to the fact that the tourists do not seem to leave these places to explore the cafes and bars that the local towns have to offer.

Many complain bitterly about the quality of the food in these ‘all inclusive’ places but because they have paid for it they soldier on regardless.

Having said that, what do tourists do at night for any form of entertainment? Mayors seem to have totally lost the plot when considering what exactly a tourist needs.

You cannot find a pub with a live band, karaoke night or just general background music as the knowledgeable mayors close these places down or threaten the premises with high fines or closure.

The only crowds I ever see are at supermarket checkouts because only one till is open.

Chicken feed YET another health scare, played up for all it is worth in the media, this time warning us that factory-farmed chickens in the UK are contaminated with ‘potentially lethal’ campylobacter. I suppose the same goes for Spain, too.

Rules bent THOUSANDS of people who have committed sexual offences against children are no longer being barred from working with young people in the UK, figures suggest.

A Home Office spokesman said: “It remains the case that anyone committing the most

serious offences is still automatically barred from working closely and unsupervised with children.

“The changes strike an appropriate balance between avoiding unnecessary intrusion into people’s lives and ensuring that children and vulnerable groups are protected.”

So if some lowlife has only abused a little bit, they can carry on working with children and vulnerable members of society!

You couldn’t make it up! This only leads me to think that the people changing these rules can only be paedophiles looking to make their pastimes troublefree.

I only shop in either once a fortnight but if this goes on every day then the checkout girls are doubling their salaries.

Bus stations, be it in Malaga, Fuengirola, Marbella or Estepona, have been on a short-changing scam since I first arrived here on the coast in 1990.

When confronted a correction is quickly made with another euro coin or so.

However, at the Estepona bus station last year I handed over a €50 note for my fare to Marbella.

It was only a few euros but my change was €20 short although when confronted the mistake was quickly set right without any apology or smile.

The supermarket assistants don’t have so much cheek, they simply stick to 20 or 50 cents when short-changing you.

Double standard SHOOTING down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was an appalling crime and all the evidence points to pro-Russian rebels in East Ukraine.

Nobody in their right mind would gainsay this but it is altogether too convenient for the West to lay the blame squarely at Vladimir Putin’s door.

The US unwillingly stopped short of directly linking the Russian president with this atrocity but still maintained that he created the conditions that allowed it to occur.

Would it be too trite to mention ‘pots’ and ‘kettles’ at this juncture?

Did not Washington (and London) create the conditions that spawned the ISIS terrorists who put Al Qaeda in the shade?

They armed and encouraged rebels fighting the Syrian government who, if YouTube footage is genuine, tore out and ate their adversaries’ hearts.

ISIS has now descended on Iraq, killing thousands. No-one can directly link Obama or Cameron to these deaths, but can anyone say that they did not create the conditions that allowed them to occur?

DON’T know about you but frankly I’m just about up to here with the damn Middle East.

If it wasn’t for this mob of 14th century barbarians, those of us who live in the relative peace and democracy of the 21st century could be happily and thankfully enjoying the diversity and beauty of our wondrous planet.

Instead of that our lives are being assaulted and the time on our Earth constantly vexed by a bunch of people, who, if they weren’t floating on an ocean of oil, would merit no attention whatsoever. Is it not ironic that races which are not far from using camels as a means of transport should control the substance that literally allows the wheels of the West to function at all?

None of them seems to know what they truly want (unless it’s to die killing someone else.) Hamas, Isis, Al-Qaeda and Lord know how many more, all set on causing as much mayhem as

CONFLICT AND CHAOS: We should stay out of Middle East extremism. possible, and for what? Your guess is certainly as good as mine. All I know is I’m sick to death of the daily dose of misery and murder these people keep delivering into our front rooms.

Dismembered bodies, heads sawn off, limbs severed, piles of rubble, along with messages of hatred, from maniacs afraid to show their faces; spreaders of terror who, aside from having an abhorrence of anything peaceful and loving are

completely incapable of telling anyone what they truly want.

None of them have ever contributed anything constructive to society. Name me one truly great invention that has emanated from members of an Arabic community. Well, I’m waiting...

What we should really do is withdraw totally from all these dysfunctional countries, except perhaps Saudi Arabia, whose no-nonsense, dictatorial royal

family has at least got their citizen control right. Don’t worry about Israel, they can look after themselves. Put a blanket ban on all Middle East travellers to the West and let ’em all get on with it.

When the dust finally settles, start doing deals with those left standing. But we won’t, will we? Our do-gooders will continue to meddle in situations that are completely beyond their control and understanding, subsequently laying even more hatred at our doorsteps. Every time we interfere in the affairs of a Middle Eastern country we unite our enemies in a common goal. Take out the infidels!

Well, I’m sick of it. The sooner we tell ’em all to get on with it the better. Watch my lips. We’re not interested in your customs, your religions, your laws or your tribal tumults. All we want is to be left alone to enjoy the wonderful democracy and peace we have created over the centuries, often at heavy cost.

Good luck in all your future endeavours, but just leave us out, OK?

The Justice minister said recently that the Bill would go through before the end of the summer. He then added a throwaway “but the summer ends in September.”

It’s likely that Mariano Rajoy now regrets the hugely unpopular demolition of the existing Abortion law that offended only a minority of hardliners. That unpopularity, palpable on the street and amongst the Opposition parties, also lurks within Rajoy’s own Partido Popular.

Ruiz-Gallardon and vice-president Soraya Saenz de Santamaria are at daggers drawn over the reforms, insiders say.

The September clue could hint at still further delays, but unless the Bill is done and dusted by the end of this year, it will surely be parked in 2015, an election year.

The political cost could come high, but it would be paid by the Justice minister alone. And that, possibly, would not upset

everybody within the government.

Gauche start NO sooner did Pedro Sanchez get the backing of rank-and-file PSOE party members to become secretary general than he started to flex his muscles.

He ordered the party’s European MPs to vote against Jean-Claude Juncker’s nomination as president of the European Commission.

The MPs did so unenthusiastically while Sanchez justified his order as “coherent.”

The party could not support a proausterity conservative, the new secretary general claimed, even though other European socialdemocrat parties voted for Juncker.

It’s one thing to be on the Left, but displaying political gaucheness on

the world stage was a less than auspicious start. And Sanchez should have pondered that anyone so viscerally-opposed by David Cameron deserved PSOE votes.

A METROSCOPIA opinion poll revealed that 38 per cent of Catalans prefer what is becoming known as the Third Way: more power for Cataluña that stops short of outright independence.

Thirty-one per cent opted for independence and 19 per cent said they were happy with the present situation.

Catalan businessmen reiterated their rejection of independence and Antoni Duran Lleida, the other half of the governing CiU coalition, has resigned as the party’s Number Two. The party’s Number One is Cataluña’s regional president Artur Mas and Duran Lleida is unhappy with the former’s moves towards an independence referendum on November 9.

Mas has promised to deliver but has painted himself into a corner and he knows it.

The scourge of modern slavery Mike Walsh Mike, based in Mediterranean Spain, is an international journalist, author and professional writer.

I

T is said that people don’t want to hear the truth because they don’t want their illusions destroyed.

This is understandable but it gives pause for thought as to how much our opinions are shaped by propaganda and self-deception.

Human bondage conjures up images of enslavement of Africans by Europeans. However, since its ‘abolition’ in 1807 the scourge of slavery has increased.

Slavery is now widespread and by association we are all sweatshop slave owners.

Of 53 movies, mostly Hollywood productions, no less than 45 are based on African slavery. Needless to say ethnic African involvement in the capture and trade of their own countrymen is brushed aside.

Long after the supposed abolition of slavery Britain’s empire became rich courtesy of indentured slavery, deportation, exploitation, transportation, enslavement of prisoners-of-war,

and ethnic cleansing dressed up as emigration. Asians were victims of European slavery in far greater numbers than were the Africans. You will search long and hard to find their suffering

recorded. The trans-Atlantic slave trade was relatively insignificant when set against slavery in the broader sense of its meaning both then and now.

Surprisingly, the ethnic group that suffered most in enslavement, its cruelties and magnitude were White Europeans. Over time more Europeans were enslaved

by Africans than the other way around. Forts and towers dotted along Mediterranean coasts were not put there to deter Martians.

Then there were the numbers of Europeans enslaved by fellow Europeans. We are not talking Biblical nor of the Roman Empire period but within living memory of most of us.

The death toll and suffering endured by Europeans throughout the Soviet Gulag was chronicled by great writer and former slave Alexander Solzhenitsyn. He was described as ‘The Conscience of the 20th Century.’ The Gulag was the Soviet Union’s forced labour camp system. It consisted of more than

500 widely scattered labour colonies. A euphemism for frozen tundra plantations situated in the harshest of climates.

The numbers of men, women and children who perished in these forced labour camps and colonies has been set as high as 10 times the number of those said to have been murdered by the German Reich. The West turned a blind eye and even assisted in it.

This monstrous Soviet system, that existed from 1920 to the collapse of the USSR, accounted for more than the combined total of those enslaved throughout human history.

For over 70 years tens of millions of unfortunate Europeans were ‘reaped and harvested’ by Soviet cattle cars. The rail road convoys ran from all over Soviet occupied Europe.

That this is the past is another self delusion. According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), 20.9 million people around the world work in conditions defined as slavery.

Family Matters IT’S not accurate to say that one country or another is more enamoured of animals. It comes down to the individual; sometimes you are either a ‘cat person’ or a ‘dog person.’

What are you? Personally I am an ‘animal person.’ I remember being about eight years old and being very upset with god when my great aunty gave me a book which said that animals did not have souls and therefore wouldn’t be going to heaven when they died. It was at that point I quit Sunday school and began my agnostic life.

There are lots of animal people living in Mallorca,

which is just as well, as there are also a lot of ‘antianimal people’ living on this island. It’s a shame, but every year there are thousands of animals abandoned in refuges, on the streets, subjected to cruel practices and neglect.

Nicky Morgan and Elaine Gill who jointly run Cat and Kitten Rescue, Mallorca are two animal people (they both also have dogs) with very big hearts.

These two ladies rescue felines who have been abandoned at birth, hand rear kittens, tend to street cats, seek out foster homes for kittens and adult cats and strive to get them permanent loving homes.

I’ve known about these two women for a while now.

Cat and Kitten Rescue has developed over the past couple of years as the demand for foster homes for abandoned cats has grown.

Their rescues are from all over the island: most of the cats are

brought to Casa Nicky where there are some facilities for them to stay.

But the custom built cattery is always overflowing. Every cat which they rescue is tested for illnesses and then is given up for adoption with a contract for castration when the animal is old enough. Due to their good relationships with the local vets in Mallorca, Cat and Kitten has very favourable rates. But it still costs a lot of money. Can you help to spread the word?

The danger of fleas and how to prevent them

Cold temperatures below 0ºC - might kill the eggs and pupae in the environment, but in

the Mediterranean and your house the temperature will never be that low.

A flea can produce hundreds of eggs that do not attach to the hair but fall off and lay in the environment.

They change to the pupae stage that can lie around for more than a year!

At the right tempera-

ture and triggered by vibration they will hatch and jump on the closest victim. The flea will suck blood and that is where the problems start: - The site where the flea sucks blood will react and cause itchiness.

- Repeated fleabites cause flea allergy - all the old bite sites will start itching again.

- Flea pooh (the little black things) can cause allergy.

- Fleabites and flea allergy will lead to fleabite dermatitis.

- Fleas can transmit diseases like Bartonellosis, mainly in cats. This blood parasite causes repeated fever stages with anaemia, lethargy, jaundice and

eventually death.

To avoid all these problems your pets should be preventively treated.

There are various products on the market.

Those that treat fleas only - as a tablet or spot-on pipet, those that treat fleas and ticks, those that treat fleas and worms, those that

treat fleas, ticks and mites and those that repel fleas, ticks, mosquitoes and sandflies - as a spot-on pipet, a collar or a spray.

These products need to be applied every three weeks, every month, every three months or every six to eight months depending on the product.

Some tips for surviving those sweaty summer nights in Spain MANY people find it nearly impossible to sleep when it is too hot at night.

Unfortunately, the glorious summer days in Spain do come with a bit of a downside, namely sticky, humid and sweltering nights.

However, there are a number of things sleep-deprived people can do to get a good night’s sleep, instead of tossing and turning in a sweat-covered bed.

Contrary to popular belief, opening windows and shades during the day will not help circulate air. In fact, it will more than likely have the opposite effect. While counterintuitive, it is a better idea to keep them closed.

This will reduce the temperature in the room. Only open them at night

HOT NIGHTS: Many people find it impossible to sleep. once the air temperature outside has gone down.

People who turn in feeling hot are less likely to fall asleep and to wake up several times during the night. Having a cool shower before

bed is a good way to find sleep.

Choose the lightest sheets possible, something that is nonabsorbent. Cotton and silk are the best choices available. This one may be a no brainer but

uncovering the feet will also help the body cool down, and also think about wearing light pyjamas.

Caffeine addicts should think twice before loading up on coffee during the summer, as it is no secret that drinking coffee or tea too late will make it harder to fall asleep.

It is also a good idea to wear earplugs to limit the noise coming from outside or to put on low volume relaxing music as long as it does not have lyrics.

Try to avoid hot dishes and big meals for dinners. Soups, stews and roast chicken are a big no-no.

Do not forget that big meals actually force the body to produce more heat for digestion. Have a light dinner instead - a salad or some fruit and yoghurt.

Are you allergic to your iPad? NICKEL finishes on some of the most used electronic devices such as iPads, can cause skin allergies, according to a report released today by the American Paediatrics journal.

The publication studied the case of an 11-year-old child from San Diego (USA) who had an allergic reaction which was directly related to the use of the Apple iPad which gave him rashes and itching.

Allergic reactions to nickel can require treatment with steroids and antibiotics if they become infected.

The journal reported that allergies to this metal, used in many products including smart phones and computers, are becoming more common.

Mosquito bites are the most common and whilst most are relatively easy to ease, there is a risk of allergic reaction. Dr. Maria Pilar Garcia Muret, chief of dermatology at Chiron Hospital, Barcelona explains: “The symptoms of a mosquito bite are immediate and easy to recognise: redness, swelling and itching.

“But if it produces headaches, fever, fainting, confusion, difficulty breathing and tightness in the throat or chest, you should go to the doctor immediately as it is likely to be an allergic reaction.”

Home remedies can also help itching. Try these natural tips to ease a range of bites: Mosquitoes: Rubbing salt or lemon on the area may relieve itching mosquito bites or apply a cold compress.

People can become food bores on diets ARE you a food bore? One in two women admit they talk too much about food whilst on a diet, boring people about calorie counting, sugar content and health risks.

Almost one in four even admitted to ‘preaching’ to their friends about the consequences or benefits of different food and drink and, perhaps even more worrying, over 40 per cent of women admitted they did stop eating something as their friend scared them into changing their diet. Thirty-five per cent of women also said they avoid certain friends when dieting because they know they will end up making them feel guilty about what they eat.

The findings came from a study of 2,000 women in the UK.

researchers in Philadelphia (USA) say they can delete HIV from cells by ‘snipping’ them out, calling the development “an important step on the path towards a permanent cure for AIDS.”

However, the scientists say it is not yet ready to go in to clinical trials.

Worldwide, more than 33 million people have HIV, including more than 1 million in the United States.

The best summer tequilas WHETHER you just want to put it in a cocktail or sip it splashed over ice, tequila is one of the summer favourites for its clarity and sharpness. Here are a few of the best available in most supermarkets.

Casa Dragones. This first came onto the market as a ‘sipping’ tequila and has gained widespread recognition for its clean taste; made with 100 per cent pure blue Agave in small batches of no more than 400 cases.

Calle 23 - this company was founded by a French woman with roots in the cognac industry. Sophie Decobecq loved tequila so much she moved to Mexico to start her own brand and Calle 23 was born. Has a hint of citrus and a lingering taste of apples.

Casa Noble Reposado. This company is both a distiller and an agave grower so quality is guaranteed from beginning to end.

LIME AND SALT: To sip or not to sip?

Their spirit is aged for one year in white oak barrels and produces a complex taste and finish.

Tres agaves. This agave concoction is aged in old whisky barrels to give it

a distinctive taste full of sweet and smooth notes.

Artenom. This has a lime scent and a sweet and smooth aftertaste - good for sipping.

Casamigos blanco. Favoured by George Clooney, this brand roasts its agave (most brands steam them) which gives a mild and nutty flavour.

Have a snack to fall asleep - there’s no excuse not to MANY people have trouble dropping off to sleep and some don’t get all the sleep they need which puts the biological clock out of whack, but there are ways to improve the amount of sleep the body gets and one of them is by eating a suitable snack.

Here are a few of the

Banana nut clusters with low fat milk. Granola is made of 100 per cent whole grains which are high in carbohydrates which will help towards a more regular circadian rhythm (sleep cycle).

Greek yoghurt. As well as carbs this also contains around 10 per cent of the recommended daily intake of calcium which, in turn, helps regulate melatonin to get the body’s sleep

Whole grain crackers.

These are a good source of vitamin B which may help prevent insomnia according to some studies.

Almonds, or almond butter on whole grain bread. Almonds provide a

high dose of magnesium which promotes relaxation and sleep.

These foods, eaten late at night, should have anyone’s eyelids drooping so now there really is no excuse to skip that essential sleep.

Some mistakes to avoid with extra virgin olive oil EXTRA virgin olive oil (EVOO) is considered to be one of the seven wonders of the food world; it contains antioxidants and many heart-healthy fats as well as tasting fantastic.

Here are a few mistakes to avoid when dealing with it.

Don’t store it in clear glass or plastic. Sunlight and oxygen are the two biggest enemies of EVOO; if overexposed to these two elements it can become rancid - the best is to opt for darkened or even opaque glass.

Don’t store it near a heat source. When exposed to heat it can cause the polyphenols to degrade and lower the flavour profile.

Don’t judge it by its colour.

Colour is only an indicator of when the olives were harvested and when the oil

Overheating can destroy valuable antioxidants and alter the flavour. Olive oil shouldn’t be used to cook anything that requires temperatures of over 360 degrees Celsius.

Don’t keep the oil for too long. The shelf life of an EVOO is around 24 months so try to avoid buying more than is needed.

When it goes rancid it gains a rather unpleasant bitter taste and loses all its health benefits.

Why are bulbs popular?

There are bulbs for all seasons, some are exotic.

Since they grow well in pots as well as the open garden they are useful for the terraces, courtyards, patios, apartment/penthouse terraces, rockeries, flowerbeds or as natural plantings under trees and deciduous shrubs.

Many will come up year after year and multiply.

They can have a dramatic effect as individual bulbs or as massed plantings.

Once planted many need little care. They are therefore of special interest to absentee gardeners.

For late winter and spring The most reliable in the garden are anemones, grape hyacinths, freesias, flag irises, Dutch and Spanish irises and miniature irises. Flag irises are useful for semi-shaded corners, the others full sun.

For pots try clivias, anemones, tulips, ranunculus, and exotic species of daffodils

and amaryllis and for window boxes grape hyacinths and late planted full sized hyacinths.

For late spring and summer Summer bulb displays can be colourful and exotic.

For us nothing can beat blue agapanthus, specimen lilies, Peruvian lilies, alstroemerias, alliums, crocosmia (montbretia) or patches of fritillaries.

For the autumn Autumn flowering crocuses, the saffron/azafran varieties and the lily related colchicums are the most typical.

Most weed seeds remain dormant in the soil all the

time, anxiously waiting for the sun to enable them to germinate. However, if they are left underground, many of them will ‘sleep’ even for years. That means the less

people disturb the soil, the less likely weed seeds are to wake up and germinate.

Landscapers and gardeners recommend avoiding highpowered tillers and sowing vegetable and flower seeds above the ground in mounds of compost and shredded leaves.

Using pre-emergent herbicides is another surefire way to keep weed seeds from germinating. It is very important to spread the herbicide before the seeds germinate and, since this happens underground at different times, it can be

difficult to pinpoint the exact timing.

Nevertheless, there is nothing better than to plan ahead. Write down the date when the first weeds come up, then subtract three weeks to determine the exact date when the herbicides must be applied.

Also, gardening wisdom indicates the closer people plant their vegetables and flowers, the less space weeds will have to grow. An infallible way to keep weeds out of lawns is to keep the grass healthy and lush.

Catalonia to tax 15,000 properties which are still lying unoccupied CATALONIA is to impose a levy on properties lying empty.

The Catalan Government recently passed a bill that will put a tax between €850

and €1,650 on unoccupied homes. It is believed the decision will affect as many as 15,000 houses owned by financial institutions in 72 Catalan municipalities.

Territorial councillor Santi Vila said the bill is part of a commitment to invigorate Catalonia’s housing stock but warns that the situation is still “extremely difficult.”

Everything seems to indicate that popular areas in Spain, including Marbella and Costa del Sol, are enjoying a wave of renewed interest from investors who are eager to make a move on the market before prices increase.

The project has already started bearing fruit by facilitating an agreement between the Generalitat and Sareb for the transfer of 600 homes for four or five years. The Catalan Government arrived at similar agreements with Catalunya Caixa and Banki for 400 and 200 properties respectively.

The bill sets forth bonuses for institutions that reach agreements with the Generalitat.

Authorities also launched a plan to rent out empty private properties to impoverished families after encouraging owners to transfer the properties to the Generalitat for six years in exchange for renovations (up to €12,000) paid by the Catalan Government.

The Generalitat will invest €2.5 million that “can benefit 200 properties,” said Vila.

Solar-powered sailing vessel docks in the port of Pollensa THE students from the Pollensa Sailing School of the RCNPP visited the solar-powered WWF boat

to learn more about this fascinating vessel.

The WWF Solar is completely powered by

the sun. It does not use any fossil fuels or sails.

This special vessel does not emit any CO2 causing no pollution, which goes to show it is possible to substitute fossil fuels with renewable energy.

The boat has several photovoltaic panels which cover its 65-square metre roof. They allow the vessel to reach an average speed of five knots. Furthermore, when its batteries are fully charged, the WWF Solar can basically run for up to

90 nautical miles straight.

The World Wildlife Federation is not new to the seas. Back in 2007, a crew of five travelled on this environmentally friendly vessel from Basle in Switzerland to New York City, thus setting a world record for having completed the first crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in history using only renewable energy.

WENTY FIVE years after the invention of the TDI engine, Audi is now taking the next big step and making the diesel engine ‘even more emotional and sporty.’ In addition to the classic exhaust gas turbocharger, the electric biturbo is being introduced with a second charger arranged in series. Instead of a turbine wheel, it contains a small electric motor that applies a maximum drive power of seven kW to accelerate the compressor wheel to maximum speed within 250 milliseconds. That means the turbo power will come in smoothly and quickly even at low speeds.

The electric compressor is downstream of the intercooler. At very low engine speeds and thus correspondingly low exhaust gas energy at the turbocharger, the bypass

The modified V6 biturbo in the Audi RS 5 TDI concept is even more impressive. It produces 283 kW (385 hp), and peak torque of 750 Nm (553.2 lb-ft) is available between 1,250 and 2,000 rpm.

The electric compressor provides for tremendous power when starting off. If the driver stays on the accelerator, 100 km/h (62.1 mph) is reached in roughly four seconds.

Boost pressure is available immediately after each change of gear thanks to the intelligent interplay between the two turbochargers.
