New hotels boost for Palma beach PALMA Council has five new hotel projects under consideration for local beaches.

It has already approved the granting of one licence for the construction of a four-star hotel, and is said to be considering another for a five-star hotel, both on the Platja de Palma.

Swimming to fight leukaemia

THREE courageous men are braving the treacherous waters of the sea between Mallorca and Menorca to raise funds to fight childhood leukaemia.

Jacobo Parages, Felix Campano and Peio Ormazabal will swim the 40 kilometres separating the two islands to fund research on this terrible disease.

Though the Three Men Against The Sea initiative has so far raised more than

€43,000, the objective is to reach €75,000 to finance new research equipment.

The adventurous journey started yesterday and is scheduled to finish next Wednesday (July 30).

The fearless swimmers are being constantly updated on how much money has been raised and they are also getting support messages through social media (#Mójate).

The 11 seeded tennis player has said that she aims to be number five before the end of the year and has now changed trainers to Dejan Petrovic, with

whom she has been training on the island, from Nemanja Kontic with whom she has won three titles.

When not training for her next grand slam the star has been enjoying relaxing walks around Palma and has been seen shopping in the Valldemossa area.

She has also met up with her

friend Rafael Nadal for lunch on the neighbouring island of Ibiza where he went in his own private yacht.

When not shopping, training or lunching, the tennis star has been signing autographs and taking selfies with the many children who have been going to the Palma Racket club to visit her.

ALL over northern Spain cities and towns are getting ready for Saint James’ Day which is celebrated on July 25. There will be special church services to honour his life and work, exhibitions, theatre productions and a plethora of other activities.

For many it is also the day to complete a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia - an undertaking done by thousands each year.

Saint James, son of Zebedee, is the patron saint of Spain and was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus and the first to be martyred. Fakes factory raided

THE GUARDIA CIVIL in Son Servera have broken up a false merchandising operation, which was making fake football Premier League items.

After inspecting 16 different shops where the items were on sale, the investigating officers have confiscated more than 3,000 articles, which were proven to be false.

Seventeen people have been charged.

The Premier League sent officials over to the island from the UK to cooperate in the large scale operation to stamp out fakes.

The workshop in Son Servera where all the merchandise was being made has been

Investigations began after a complaint was made by officials of the

Premier League, stating that false merchandising was being sold on the island.

Initial investigations led to the discovery of the shops selling the fakes

and further inquiries led officers to the factory in Son Servera where the items were being made.

Officers confiscated the presses and all the materials necessary for the fabrication of the merchandising as well as the finished products.

These included Aston Villa keyrings, Arsenal badges, Tottenham Hotspur bottle openers and a plethora of other items all with well-known clubs’ names on them.

The 17 detainees, who have already been charged, are out on bail until their cases can be heard.

Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Flying through the air A DRUNK driver “flew through the air” when he lost control of his car in Son Rapinya.

The driver was allegedly more than four times over the legal limit as he was driving along the Son Rapinya road, accompanied in the car by a woman. He lost control before going into the lane of oncoming traffic and finally overturning his car on the roundabout near Colegio Montesion.

According to eye witnesses, the car flew several metres through the air before coming to a stop on its roof.

Both passengers were able to get themselves out of the car without assistance. They were taken to hospital but their condition is said to be non-critical.

I should be so looky, looky, looky looky!

By Louise Elliot EVEN the linguisticallychallenged understand lookylooky. “Looky-looky!” we hear as we drink morning coffee, order lunch or relax over dinner.

“Looky-looky,” street vendors command as they trudge from bar to bar, from restaurant to restaurant on every promenade and paseo along the Mediterranean coast and on every island from Mallorca to Tenerife.

You’d have to be naive to believe you are being offered genuine Versace sunglasses or a Prada bag. The big labels complain about fakes, of course, but there is an upside for them because their names resound amongst those who cannot normally afford them.

There is no such thing as bad publicity even if it’s from fake goods sold by someone who is probably an illegal immigrant.

And - let’s say it - someone who is a black, illegal immigrant. This isn’t racism, it’s a fact and that this man risked so much to scrape a precarious

living in Spain is a tribute to our imperfect society.

However bad things are here, they are a hundred times worse in the place he left in subSaharan Africa and paid a fortune to leave.

That’s why he gives you a ready smile although the most persistent vendors are harder to shake off than a heavy cold.

Everyone knows that you are supposed to haggle with a street vendor, but the €20 that a tourist eventually spends on a rip-off designer bag is €20 less for a legitimate business-owner.

Shopkeepers who provide employment, pay Social Security, income tax, IVA valueadded tax and comply with everything that the law

STREET VENDORS: Are they really what they seem? demands of a business-owner resent this competition. They are eaten away with overheads as they grapple with the economic crisis while they see their opportunist rivals make profits without responsibilities.

But the looky-looky men remain. Given that most clients on a bar or restaurant terrace regard them as a nuisance, why are they allowed in?

Not everyone dismisses as a conspiracy theory the suggestion that they pay protection money and the looky-looky men are not what

they seem. Some vendors are in thrall to people-traffickers owed money for their illicit passage to Spain or those who supply their wares.

One of the biggest financialcorruption scandals of 2012 centred on a still-remanded Asian businessman, ostensibly an upright citizen, whose alleged crimes include tax fraud, money-laundering, prostitution and drugs. Is it entirely coincidental that the fake goods offered by lookylooky men are made in China?

What is undeniable is that

some looky-looky men sell drugs although they are seldom found with enough on them to be charged with dealing.

It’s generally agreed that the police are little help. An arrested looky-looky man will soon be out on the street again, ready to return to the nearest paseo, ready to accost you again. But who does he really work for?

How the many business people that advertise in the Euro Weekly News must wish they could get away with the Looky-Looky business model!

They are legal, pay their dues, create employment and, through their taxes, help provide the many services we all enjoy. But what do they get in return?

For them the struggle against the Spanish bureaucracy is a daily battle. A little of the leeway given to looky-looky men by the authorities would go a long way to helping their businesses thrive.

Angler found dead A FISHERMAN who went missing in the Porroig area on Sunday has been found dead.

The Guardia Civil, Maritime Services, and the fire brigade were all called out to help in the search for the man, 57, who went out, by himself, when the winds were just getting strong and never got back home.

His family, fearing the worst, called the emergency services and reported his disappearance.

Although the combined police forces are looking into the matter they have not discarded the notion the incident might be an accident and he may have just fallen into the water.

Ten days, five falls by young tourists IN the last 10 days there have been five ‘hotel falls’ by young, usually drunk, tourists of various nationalities.

Last week there was the young Danish tourist who fell from the fourth

floor of his hotel in central Palma; then there was the 22-year-old British tourist who fell from his aparthotel second floor balcony in Magaluf.

The incident took place on Calle Joan Miro when he was crossing the road, on a pedestrian crossing, and the bus just didn’t see him.

Irish tourist in critical condition after fall AN IRISH tourist is in critical condition after falling from the third floor of his hotel in Magaluf.

The branches of a large pine tree broke his fall and, possibly, saved the life of the 18-year-old man.

When emergency services arrived they found the young man in a serious medical condition having received a hard hit to the head and many hits to his body causing extensive bruising. After stabilising him they took him immediately to the Clinica de Palma where doctors are refusing to comment on his condition.

Just last week a Danish tourist lost his life falling from the fourth floor of the same hotel.

The Guardia Civil and the Local Police were both called to the hotel to try to clarify the circumstances leading up to the man’s fall which happened in the early hours of the morning. Given the young tourist had just come back after a night out in the local bars the police do not suspect any foul play but say they will investigate a little further.

Llucmajor mayor to investigate brawl THE mayor of Llucmajor has qualified a fight which took place between two police officers, in uniform, as “disgraceful.”

Joan Jaume, Mayor of Llucmajor, has commented on the fight, which took place in full view of onlookers, and said that he has ordered an immediate investigation into the facts.

Sex, lies, videotape and blackmail A WOMAN has been condemned to a year in prison for her part in blackmailing a local man who she had recorded having a sexual encounter with one of her friends.

After recording him she got in touch with him and asked for â‚Ź12,000; if he did not pay she threatened to distribute the video.

The man denounced her actions to the police and paid no money.

The sentence was only one year because the events happened in 2004 but the case has been held up by the courts since then.

Two days after the encounter, which the woman had set up - even providing the video equipment, the man received a phone call telling him to meet her in a local supermarket; once there she gave him a copy of the recording and told him that she would call him later.

When she called she said she wanted â‚Ź12,000 or she would distribute the images.

The next day he got another phone call with instructions of where to leave the cash but the victim had no intention of paying and went straight to the Guardia Civil who told him to make a fake drop so they could catch the culprit.

The woman, of Slavic origin, must have sensed something was wrong as she never went to pick up the money and instead called the man to complain that he had sold her out to the police.

Police investigations led them to the woman, and her arrest, just two days later.

The courts did not accept her appeals and upheld their sentence of one year in prison without a monetary fine.

Calanova cancer support needs help A GROUP of ladies got together in 2011 and decided to open a charity shop.

It was financed entirely independently and everybody that works in the shop is a volunteer, and therefore, unpaid.

People donate any unwanted items of clothing, bric-a-brac or furniture which in turn is sold in the shop.

After paying rent and expenses, all money raised is given to cancer charities here on the island.

They support the A.E.C.C (Spanish Association of Cancer Care), A.S.P.A.N.O.B (Association for children with cancer and their parents), Dime (which help with palliative care in Juan March, Son Espases and Hospital General), Cancer Support Group (which helps people dealing with the trauma of cancer treatments).

In addition to the shop, they also do fundraising events which are hugely successful and have helped them donate over €84,000.

They, of course, can only do this

CANCER CHARITIES: All support will play a role in helping their efforts. with the help of generous donations from their supporters.

Their biggest fundraiser is their annual fashion show, which will be held at the Santa Ponsa Country Club on August 28 at 7 pm, tickets cost €15 (€20 at the door). In order to include a glass of Champagne and some tapas, they are seeking contributions to help defray the costs associated with the event so that all funds raised can go directly to the

Cancer Charities. They also need raffle and auction prizes as every bit helps!

Any and all support will play a role in helping people fight this terrible disease.

It has been officially announced that this will be the final year of Mallorca Rocks.

After five seasons operating the summerlong series of open-air gigs at the Mallorca Rocks Hotel, the decision has been made to leave the resort of Magaluf at the end of the summer in order to focus on expansion plans both in Ibiza and globally.

Andy McKay, Founder & CEO, Ibiza Rocks Group says: “As the Ibiza Rocks Group expands with exciting new hotel and events projects in Ibiza and beyond, our

strategic agenda has changed and the time is right for us to move on at the end of the summer season. We will concentrate on building our Ibizan infrastructure and our global expansion plan and feel this is the right movement at the right moment for the Ibiza Rocks brand.�

Hit and run in Calvia results in death of local restaurant owner accident but was later caught by the Local Police and sent immediately to prison.

The victim was the owner of a popular local restaurant, the Ca na Cuco in Calvia, near which the accident happened.

Palmanova dealers busted by police IN a bust in the Palmanova area, the Local Police in Calvia have identified more than 40 people who were selling drugs, confiscated around 70 bags containing marihuana and 100 doses of cocaine.

The police operation took place in the early hours of the morning in an area frequented by holidaymakers and dealers alike.

A police spokesperson commented that the bags of marihuana are usually sold for €25 and the wraps of cocaine for around €50.

The majority of the dealers caught in the raid were of African extraction and, police suspect, use their ‘trade’ as itinerant wig and sunglasses vendors to cover up for their real business which is drugs.

According to eye witnesses several taxi drivers, who were going past at the time, all shouted words of encouragement to the officers; apparently they are fed up with the rise in crime in the area.

A WOMAN who was involved in a hit and run incident in Calvia has died at the Son Espases Hospital.

The driver, who was drunk at the time of the incident, has been sent to prison by the judge investigating the case.

Antonia Mascaro Pons, 61 and resident of Calvia, was run over by a drunk driver who tried to flee the scene of the

checking on his victim.

The Local Police rapidly set up road blocks to catch the BMW which they found in the industrial estate of Son Bugadelles, four kilometres away.

Initially the driver was charged with fleeing the scene of an accident and reckless driving. After the facts were clarified he was also charged with drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter.

The culprit was found to have a blood alcohol content of 0.71 which is nearly three times the legal limit. He was left in the police cells to sleep off his drunkenness and appeared before a judge the next day; the judge sent him straight to prison until his case can be heard.

Pool fall A YOUNG man had to be airlifted hospital in Son Espases with symptoms of paraplegia after drinking alcohol and launching himself into a pool.

Two new signings for Real Mallorca football club

RCD MALLORCA continues giving the finishing touches to its squad for the upcoming La Liga season.

The club presented its two latest signings last Tuesday and Coach Miquel Soler can consider himself

Cristian Bustos, 31, has had a long footballing career playing for other second division teams, including Salamanca and Sporting

De Gijon. Javi Ros, on the other hand, barely played five matches when he was still a part of Real Sociedad’s reserve team.

“I am a defensive midfielder, aggressive, passionate and highly

Royal couple to holiday on island THE Royal Couple will holiday in Mallorca without their extended family.

Tourism on the rise MORE than two million tourists visited the Balearic Islands in June.

As stated in a survey released by the Industry, Energy and Tourism Ministry, tourism on the islands increased by 3.7 per cent when compared to June 2013.

A total of 1,394,906 tourists visited Mallorca (+3.1 per cent), while 129,999 travelled to Menorca (+3.9 per cent) and 418,680 to Ibiza Formentera (+5.9 per cent).

According to the figures released, 2,002,814 tourists holidayed on the Balearic Islands in June, including 261,869 Spaniards, which represents a 16.2 per cent increase when compared to the 225,300 national tourists that travelled to the islands last year.

The Balearic Islands are still a sought-after summer retreat for foreign tourists given the 1,740,945 that visited them last month - 2.1 per cent more than in 2013 (1,704,703). Most came from Germany and UK.

Officers save baby left inside car VALLADOLID Municipal Police officers rescued a baby from certain heatstroke.

The four-month-old child was left in the car by the mother at 1pm with the doors locked and the windows rolled up while she ran some errands.

Local residents called the police after they saw the baby was restless and having a crying fit inside the locked vehicle.

During the heat wave that hit Spain last week, temperatures in Valladolid reached 35°C (95°F).

Given the danger to the baby’s life resulting from the scorching heat, the police decided to break one of the car’s windows and pull the baby out.

He was rushed to a nearby hostel where the officers washed his face and hydrated him.

HEAT RISK: Temperatures inside cars can reach 60°C. The mother, 35, arrived minutes later and said she was just running some errands down the street.

She promised to take the baby to a hospital to have him undergo a thorough examination.

Paediatricians and safety experts agree that hot cars can be extremely dangerous. At least 600 children have died since 1998 after being forgotten

in the car by absentminded parents.

On a typical hot summer day, temperatures inside a car - even if the windows are rolled down a little bit can quickly rise above 48°C (120°F) to 60°C (140°F).

At such temperatures, children are at greater risk for heatstroke, which can result in a high fever, seizures, dehydration and even death.

Underage thieves LOCAL POLICE in Calvia have caught a gang of underage thieves who were robbing lovers on the beaches of Magaluf.

Calvia police became aware of a gang of Romanian youths, which had already been expelled from the Playa de Palma for stealing from tourists who were “otherwise engaged� at the time, and decided to follow them.

After a short while of watching them they realised that the gang was stealing light items like phones from drunken tourists who were ending their night out on the beach.

Three of the gang were arrested then and there but were later let go due to being underage.

Another two youths managed to escape among the many tourists already on the beach outside the infamous Punta Ballena district.

Both Guardia Civil and

Local Police spokespeople have commented that, recently, a lot of the major criminal networks are employing underage operatives as they know they cannot be held by the authorities for very long.

AT THE PUMP: Petrol in Spain is cheaper than in other EU countries.

Petrol prices going down again and Spain below EU average THE price of petrol and diesel went down for the second week in a row last week.

Average prices have gone down since the beginning of July when they had reached an historic high just before the holiday season. Despite this, prices are still 3 per cent higher than they were at the beginning of the year.

Petrol and diesel have gone down by 0.55 per cent and 0.74 per cent respectively, giving drivers a bit of a

breather after the highs of the beginning of the month.

The average price of petrol, across all the providers, is now €1.444 per litre when it was €1.456, and diesel is at €1.327, before it was at €1.346.

The price of fuel in Spain is still under the European average: Spanish consumers are paying a yearly average of approximately €1.589 per litre while in most of Europe consumers are paying €1.616.

POOR children in Spain often depend on school canteens to get a hot meal but it is not clear whether the service will be provided during the summer.

Even though Spanish Ombudswoman Soledad Becerril asked Autonomous Communities to open their school canteens during the summer season, there is no general agreement yet.

Andalucia, The Canaries, Cataluña, Aragon and the Balearic Islands announced that their schools would keep feeding impoverished

children during the holidays, while schools in the Valencian Community, Murcia, Navarra, Galicia, Madrid, Cantabria, the Basque Country and Castile will not.

Some of them have opted for an alternative: their summer schools will be used to give out meals to the children. Others, however, have given their local councils the option of opening the schools to feed poor children should they deem it necessary.

Government guarantees meals to 4,500 children through its summer schools network, in addition to entertainment and sports activities. These schools are located in neighbourhoods with larger populations at risk of social exclusion and have a budget of €1.6 million.

They will therefore not make it mandatory for school canteens to open.

RAND SPAIN is well past the point of recovery and is now surging ahead. According to a survey, the country’s international image has risen thanks to law reforms and economic growth, with 90 per cent of reports about Spain being seen as positive.

There is much to be positive about, although unemployment and poverty are still at scandalously high levels.

But the country has returned to growth, tourism figures are hitting record levels, car sales – so often the barometer of growth – are up and many say the property market has turned the corner.

So are the green shoots of recovery showing? Yes, they are, and don’t let anyone try to talk the country down. In the Press there are many who take the easy option of sensationalist gloom. It’s easy to be pessimistic, but better to face the future with optimism. How other countries see Spain matters, so let’s

all put the best face on it we can.

After all, it is a wonderful place to live, why would we want to be pessimists?

Shares boost for Logista…

SHARES in Logista are once again quoted on Spain’s principal stock exchange, La Bolsa. Trading ceased in 2008 after Spanish-French Altadis, which owned the Fortuna and Gauloise brands, was acquired by Imperial Tobacco for €12.6 billion.

Logista delivers to 300,000 delivery points in Spain, Portugal, Italy and France at kiosks, petrol stations, hospitals, pharmacies, hotels and restaurants. It also works with other companies in the consumer goods sector, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals and publishing.

The Bristol-based international company cigarette manufacturer obtained a 59.6 per cent stake in

Logista at the time of the purchase, later buying the remainder. It recently decided to put 27.3 per cent of its Logista shares on the market.

After starting at €13, they immediately went up 1.9 per cent and half-anhour later had risen by 4 per cent. At one stage they rose by 6 per cent but by the end of trading and after some big sales, they closed on their first day at €13.40, an increase of 3.08 per cent.

Logista CEO Luis Egido admitted afterwards that he had anticipated a higher opening price although debuting with immediate rises confirmed that the shares would “follow a long, upwards path.”

Aligning the minimum salary with labour costs would increase the demand for young workers, the report maintained.

Spain’s minimum salary of €645.30 a month has been almost frozen since 2011 and the FMI’s suggestion echoes a proposal from CEOE, the Spanish Confederation of Industry.

‘Bad bank’ turns landlord SAREB, Spain’s ‘bad bank’ has agreed to free up properties for social housing.

Six hundred of the homes that Sareb acquired as toxic assets from bailed-out banks will be ceded to Cataluña’s regional government. These can then be rented out at affordable prices.

Groups of the properties located in 72 Catalan municipalities will be released at regular intervals and made available at rents of between

€150 and €400 a month.

All are in a good state of repair, Sareb said, although it will also carry out any necessary repairs.

In return the regional government will reimburse Sareb with the properties’ community charges, insurance premiums and administration costs.

The apartments will be initially ceded for four years, renewable by mutual agreement for yearly periods after that.

MARKETS and Competition regulator, the CNMC, criticised ‘random’ increases in Spain’s pre-tax fuel prices.

They are the highest in the EU and the CNMC cited the ‘rocket and feather effect’ of asymmetric pricing which occurs when the price of petrol goes up like a rocket as soon as oil costs more. When the price of oil goes down, petrol prices feather down very slowly, enabling retailers to take advantage of the perception that prices should be high.

In May, the CNMC noted, the price of 95 octane petrol rose to €1.431 per litre, a 0.3 per cent increase on April while diesel cost €1.332 a litre.

At the beginning of this month, coinciding with the summer exodus and the Iraq conflict, 95 octane petrol cost an average €1.45 and diesel €1.35.

Independent petrol stations offered the cheapest prices in May, while amongst the principal operators, BP’s prices were the lowest for the fourth consecutive month. Cepsa abandoned the usual practice of lining up its

market. This had prompted the exit of several international operators after the fuel market’s deregulation in 1998, the CNMC said.

Repsol, Cepsa, DISA, Meroil and GALP are currently under investigation for agreeing prices and ‘exchanging business information.’ Repsol, Cepsa and BP are also accused of coordinating prices between operators and distribution companies.

PWC washes its hands PRICEWATERHOUSECOOPERS (PWC) refused to carry out a forensic audit for Gowex.

The Spanish Wi-Fi network provider filed for bankruptcy a week after admitting it misrepresented its accounts for 10 years. Beforehand, and as rumours began to acquire substance, the Gowex CEO Jenaro Garcia announced that he had commissioned an audit by PWC. The courts are now weighing up whether to accuse Garcia of rigging company accounts and improper use of insider information.

Oil companies helped by ‘rocket and feather’ effect

EU fraud down 21 per cent says commission EU Member States must step up their work to prevent, detect and report fraud affecting EU funds, according to the European Commission’s annual report on the protection of financial interests (PIF).

The report sets out detailed recommendations on areas national authorities should focus on in this respect. The report finds that detected fraud in EU spending accounts for less than 0.2 per cent of all funds.

Nevertheless, the Commission believes that greater efforts at national level both on combating and detecting fraud should be deployed.

The annual PIF report therefore recommends, amongst other things, that Member States review their controls to ensure they are riskbased and well-targeted.

On the positive side, the report notes that good progress is being made at national level to implement new rules and policies which will strengthen the fight

They should help you to fill in the official Hoja de Reclamación, the complaint form.

Trick the thief - Carry a wallet just for robbers.

Put in a bit of low value currency and a few fake credit cards etc. Meanwhile put high value bills and real credit cards in

another place - your socks, inside pocket wherever is handy. If you get robbed then just hand the ‘robber’s wallet’ over!

Hit the gym - Obviously the more in shape a person looks could deter a robber from committing a crime. Reason might have us believe that a thief would attack a wimpy looking person rather than a ripped person!

If muscles aren’t your thing then maybe just try to appear super confident on the street - especially as a tourist in a foreign country. Confidence tells a thief that you’re liable to fight to get your money back.

And guys - Get that wallet out of your back pocket - it’s not safe there!!!

Mood swings over Spanish banking CHIEF ECONOMIST: Lucio Vinhas de Souza of Moody’s Investors Service.

MOODY’S INVESTORS SERVICE still has concerns about Spain’s banking system.

Despite recent improvements, soon-to-be introduced banking framework from Brussels could bring increased risk, the ratings’ agency said.

Spain’s macroeconomic conditions, liquidity and capitalisation have taken a turn for the better, Moody’s acknowledged in its Banking System Outlook: Spain report.

Prospects for economic recovery are good, with a 1.2 per cent increase in this year’s GDP and a 1.7 per cent forecast for 2015.

This will provide the foundations for gradual stabilisation of the banking sector, Moody’s said.

Nevertheless, none of these factors has persuaded Moody’s to modify its negative outlook for the country’s banks.

“Europe’s new bank resolution framework has increased credit risks for

senior unsecured creditors and drives the negative outlook for the system,” it explained.

Banks will continue to be affected by the real estate sector, whose excessive offer of residential property will result in persistently falling prices, the agency predicted. The volume of bad loans is still very high, it pointed out, and is likely to remain at ‘very high levels’ owing to the flagging economic cycle.

Preoccupation with manners of others is a real turn-off WHY are the English so preoccupied with manners? Not their own of course, but other people’s.

If I get into an argument with an English person aged between 35 and 50 because they have been trying to run me over at a zebra crossing or their dog bit me or their child s**t on my shoe (it may have been the other way around, I don’t remember), it invariably turns into a discussion of manners: my manners.

They will concede that I have a right to be upset, “But it’s the way you say it. You have to say it with a smile!” they say unsmilingly.

If I insist, mildly, that my manners are not the primary problem, or even (heaven forbid) dare to suggest that they have some sort of responsibility with regard to their child or dog, it will invariably end with them threatening me with physical violence: “If you ever talk to me/my wife/my child like that again I will smash your head in.”

The threat as such is not the problem, I don’t want to talk to them, I never did. I just want them not to push me, spit on me or run me over. I can walk away, but the attitude puzzles me. Are English bar brawls nowadays about who is more polite?

And I have yet to find someone less inclined to smile than a 42year-old Englishwoman. Or less polite.

What is it that I have missed?

By appointment I WAS so glad to read in the Euro Weekly News that bogus gas inspectors have been arrested by the Guardia Civil.

It must be a very lucrative business because it has been going on for years and they seem to do the rounds regularly where I live, yet people still fall for it.

Indeed, there was a tale of woe on these pages not so long ago.

It’s been many years since I fell into their trap. It cost me dear but we all learn from our mistakes and now when they knock on my door I turn them away.

Fortunately I speak some Spanish but these men are persistent and they can be rather intimidating and will try to imply that you are breaking the law if you don’t let them in.

I shudder to think how easily some of my fellow Brits are going to fall into their clutches.

Just remember gas inspectors come to your home only if you have called them yourself.

Otherwise, just get rid!

Based on my own experience, do not waste your money unless the rules are clearly available.

About a year ago I placed a bet on a winning horse only for it to be disqualified. Payment was refused under their rules which were not available at the time but were verified as being correct by the gaming concern.

Imagine my delight on having another bet on a horse which finished second and was promoted to first place by the stewards, giving me a winning bet. Once again, however, payment was refused due to their rules which were still not available. The decision was once again upheld by the gaming concern, but as a gesture of goodwill they kindly offered to settle the bet as void, therefore giving me my stake money back.

What a cheek! My advice to punters is to avoid these machines at all costs.

Belt and braces THEY say that Homo Sapiens is the only species that stubs its toe twice on the same stone.

The first time was the tragic high-speed train accident last July in Santiago de Compostela, when an ultramodern ‘Alvia’ bullet train derailed, killing 79 passengers and injuring 130.

It was not equipped with passenger seat belts, although no Spanish news media at the time deemed such a glaring and fatal flaw worthy of comment.

Last May my wife was a passenger on the AVE high-speed train from Valencia to Madrid. She and a friend can testify to the fact that the AVE fleet of bullet trains which reach speeds of over 300 kilometres an hour are not equipped with passenger seat belts either.

Why not? Does it cost so much to install them? How much is a life worth? We are obliged by law to fasten and ‘buckle up for safety’ with stiff fines guaranteed if we don’t in private cars and taxis.

They’re obligatory in Spain on all school buses, long-distance coaches, planes and even some ships. Wouldn’t seat belts have saved at least some, if not many, precious lives in the ill-fated derailment last August?

FIRST met Cilla Black in New York in 1964. Purely by coincidence I was ensconced in the hotel opposite the one occupied by the Beatles, who were in America for the first time to perform a number of venues, including an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Cilla and some of the entourage, including Brian Epstein, were also staying in the same hotel. When I was introduced and spent some quality time with Cilla I found her bright, unassuming and a veritable bundle of fun. Well, the years have certainly taken care of that.

The tirade of self-pitying drivel that has emerged this week simply defies the imagination. And the reason? Wait for it.

She’s going deaf.

Before you all start screaming how terrible this can be, I can assure you that, as a long-term sufferer of extremely high tinnitus, I am fully aware that hearing problems can be chronic and horribly debilitating. But give us a

NLY one person has sat on the banquillo - the Spanish equivalent of standing in the Dock - over the Gurtel financial corruption case.

That was super-judge Baltasar Garzon for accepting as evidence bugged telephone conversations between remanded Gurtel suspects and their lawyers. And now, surprise of all surprises, IU is the only political party facing disciplinary action from the Accounts Tribunal. The former Spanish communist party has accepted donations from anonymous benefactors and some sums were above the €100,000 maximum.

Come again? Possibly IU has a Caja B cash box overflowing with black money. But so does the PP if its ex-treasurer Luis Barcenas is to be believed.

Leaning to the left THE PSOE’s brand new secretary general Pedro Sanchez is planning

a left-turn that will help the party win next year’s municipal, regional and general elections.

No-one could argue that a leftturn won’t entice left-voters away from IU or the new, antieverything Podemos that poached so many votes in the European elections.

But the people who always decide elections for both the PSOE and the now-governing PP party are the floating voters.

SUPREME irony that PSOE cardcarriers chose Pedro Sanchez instead of Eduardo Madina as the party’s next secretary general.

Outgoing leader Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba had wanted Andalucia’s regional president Susana Diaz to succeed him.

Madina held out for an open vote that was grudgingly agreed to. Diaz, who wanted “unequivocal unanimity” behind her before she would take on the leadership, withdrew.

Sanchez, meanwhile, assured Diaz that he would not make a bid.

In some quarters, Madina’s losing out to Sanchez is seen as a punishment vote, a last hurrah from the old order and Andalucia.

Despite the new names, politics are still being played within politics.

Sworn statements MINISTERS and those appointed to highranking Administration posts are sworn in before the King.

The formality remains the same but the formula has changed since the abdication. Although they must still swear on the Constitution, the bible and a crucifix are brought out only if requested.

The change, the Royal Household explained recently, has been made because Spain is a secular state. In fact Spain, roughly one half of which has always been rabidly anti-clerical, was declared a secular state in 1978, thanks to the Constitution.

It required 36 years and Felipe VI to make that clear.

New Spain-UK Double Tax Treaty The new double tax treaty for Spain and UK was signed in London in March 2013 and replaces the existing treaty which dates back to 1975. It enters into force as follows: • 12th June 2014 for the purposes of withholding taxes • 1st January 2015 in Spain • 1st April 2015 for companies in the UK • 6th April 2015 for individuals in the UK. Pensions Under the current treaty, Government Service pension amounts are exempt from taxation in Spain. This does not change with the new treaty, but the amount of pension received must now be included in the calculation determining how much tax you owe.

While the treaty gives a credit for the Spanish tax due (so it is not directly taxed in Spain), this effectively means that your other income which is directly taxable in Spain may be pushed into higher rates of tax.

that where income or capital is exempted from Spanish tax by way of treaty provisions, the income will be included in the calculation to work out the rates of tax due. This affects your earned income allowance and marginal rate of tax, resulting in larger tax bills in most cases.

Capital gains tax on sale of shares Currently Spain has no taxing rights on gains realised by UK

residents on the sale of shares in any Spanish company.

The new treaty reinstates Spanish taxing rights on any company whose asset base comprises of at least 50% of Spanish property. Thus where Spanish property is owned via a company, Spain is granted taxing rights on any sale of shares connected with the ownership of the property (along with the UK if held by a UK company).

Application of the treaty to trusts and partnerships The new treaty brings the terms trusts and partnerships into the range of definitions. The term ‘person’ includes an individual, trust, company etc. Specific rules determine when the treaty applies in structures involving UK resident trusts established in the UK or third countries.

The new treaty allows both countries to look through the structure of trusts and partnerships, as though the trust does not exist and

the income flows directly to the beneficiaries. As such these sources of income and gains can benefit from the treaty provisions, but any tax benefits from utilising a trust structure are effectively lost as the trust is made transparent.

These provisions only apply to UK resident trusts. It does not apply to trusts established in European countries like Malta which do not have Spanish or UK assets within the trust.

Withholding tax In cases regarding royalties, interest or dividends received from subsidiaries with a minimum stake holding of 10%, withholding tax is reduced to zero. In other cases withholding tax is set at a maximum of 15%.

Anti-abuse Treaty benefits will not be applicable to transactions which are entered into for the sole purpose of benefiting from a treaty provision.

Double tax treaties take precedence over either country’s domestic rules. This article covers the changes to the treaty; there are obviously many other provisions that affect you. Attraction or a drain on resources?

ARE looky-looky men a tourist attraction or a drain on the Spanish system as they don’t pay IVA, tax or Social Security?

OST of the people we spoke to had a sympathetic view of looky-looky men. Business Development Executive at Currencies Direct, in Mallorca, Christian Severinsen, said: “I believe that the tendency reflects a deeper issue in society. Whether or not they are a drain on the Spanish society or a tourist attraction, I can’t say, but the fact remains that they are human beings and European society as a whole should think seriously about how we are going to tackle increased immigration in the future.”

STREET TALK Property Choice, Mojacar, Almeria, said: “As long as they are not overly persistent, I don’t have a problem with them. They are just trying to scratch a living like the rest of us and there are plenty of other people evading tax here, too, without the horrific background these people have come from.”

Sue Mercier from Suki Sailing Yacht Trips, Almuñecar, Granada, remarked: “I don’t think they are a drain on the system, as I don’t think they use the system. As they may be here illegally, they cannot claim unemployment or use Social Security. They could be a tourist attraction if there were not too many of them.”

Julie Law from Yorkshire Linen Warehouse, Mijas, Malaga, commented: “Everybody has to survive, so I don’t think they are a drain or a tourist attraction, especially now as they are not as intrusive as they used to be five or 10 years ago.They give you your space.”

Terri Hughes from La Finca de Eduardo’s Restaurant, Campoamor, had mixed views: “It is a difficult one. Tourists do seem to like the lookylooky men but some of them drive me mad. I think it is all part of the tourist experience. If they were not doing that, would they turn to crime?”

Another relatively dull week for euro Commentary by Moneycorp

EUR Despite the unfolding drama in Ukraine and Gaza it was another relatively dull week for the euro. Data showing a fall in industrial production and an inflation rate down at 0.5 per cent were shrugged off by investors, who were relieved not to see worse numbers. The euro lost only a little ground; half a cent to sterling, three quarters of a US cent and a third of an Australian cent.

USD Despite the unfolding geopolitical dramas it was another relatively dull week for the dollar. The only major US

ecostat showed retail sales increasing by a meagre 0.2 per cent in May. But the dollar received help when Federal Reserve chief Janet Yellen said interest rate increases were likely to “occur sooner and be more rapid than currently envisioned.” It strengthened by quarter of a cent against sterling and by three quarters of a cent against the euro.

CAD The Canadian dollar had a difficult week, losing a cent to the US dollar and one and a half cents to sterling.

AUD The Aussie did a good job of keeping its head below the parapet.

economic statistics; mortgage lending was steady, vehicle sales enjoyed a monthly increase and business confidence was almost unchanged.

But updates to the interest rate outlook meant that the US dollar and the British pound had successful weeks. So the Aussie ended up losing a third of a cent to both of them.

NZD There was one important statistic on the NZ dollar’s agenda; inflation.

Investors believed that it would have jumped from 1.5 per cent to 1.8 per cent in the second quarter. When the figure turned out to be just 1.6 per cent it dampened expectations for higher NZ interest rates and disappointed investors sold the Kiwi.

It was the week’s poorest majorcurrency performer, losing one and a quarter cents to the US dollar and two and a half cents to sterling.

2. Communicate Regularly - Before and after the sitter enters

your home communicate regularly, learn about them; ask their history.

3. Previous Pet Ownership/Experience Ask about their personal pet ownership experience.

4. Understanding Pet Routines - Anyone who cares for a pet will understand that there are different feeding and care routines, but pets are usually creatures of habit.

5. References/Police Checks - Ask for recent references.

IT’S all about body language.

When a cat enters a room all the cat lovers start staring at it, they often move towards it, extend their hands and make noises.

The non-cat person on the other hand may try to make herself (or himself) as invisible as possible so the cat does not jump on them.

This person is likely to sit extremely still, look down and away from the cat, keeping her hands on the lap and maintaining absolute silence.

The cat finds this latter display of body language far less threatening so may well move towards the ‘non-cat’ person to explore further!

Another interesting question is. Why do cats roll over and show their tummies yet scratch when it is tickled?

Eight hours a day in bed STILL LOVING IT: After 10 years on the island, I love living here and watching our daughter grow up in the sunshine.

Happy anniversary Mallorca TEN years ago last weekend I drove a mini metro through Vicki Mcleod France to Barcelona. I can look back on that day, and have yet to actually lie down on a still remember every single event in beach for long enough to get a tan.

Mallorca is still as beautiful as it it: including the egg sandwich my mum sent me off with at 6am from was when I first fell in love with the her house in France, and the place, and I am still friends with hyperventilating cats that didn'’t some of the people that I first met stop complaining for the whole 48- when I arrived. Some have fallen hour journey from London to by the wayside, moved on or away, Palma. but this leaves room for new

friends and new experiences: this is something I had to learn to cope with, the transience of island life.

It’s not always easy to live in Mallorca, but I still love it. I love living here and watching our daughter grow up in a beautiful, natural way, speaking three languages, playing in the sunshine and in the sea, getting a great education in a nice setting with her school in Port Andratx and the fabulous people at Kip McGrath.

Our daughter is developing into a young person with her own ideas and opinions, something which makes me very proud. My husband and I have been through business success, and failure, and success again, and we’ve become part of our community here on the island, trying to contribute in the best

ways that we can. Sometimes we’ve thought about going back to the UK ourselves. We left behind good jobs with great prospects to move to an island where we’ve had to fight for everything we have, nothing has been easy to get. What about the future, where will we be in another 10 years’ time?

I haven’t a clue, but wherever we are I hope we will be living our lives to their fullest capacity and enjoying ourselves, challenging and pushing ourselves to do more things. When you see what you can do in difficult circumstances it certainly gives you the courage to keep trying to do more.

WOMEN trying to get pregnant should try and spend at least eight hours in bed with the lights off.

New research revealed darkness plays a key role in a woman’s chance of conception as the melatonin hormone, believed to protect a woman’s eggs from stress, is produced in the dark. The research, published in the journal Fertility and Sterility stated that melatonin protects eggs from freeradicals which can reduce fertility.

The study, of 833 women aged between 19 and 46 attending a fertility clinic, also said pregnant women should follow the same advice as over exposure to light, including from TVs or tablets, can lead to the baby’s brain not getting enough melatonin to regulate its body clock which could lead to health problems later in life.

In hot weather roses often last longer if cut and put in a vase than if left on the bush.

If one cuts roses for the house this reduces the colour in the rose garden unless extensive.

In general there is less choice of varieties of roses in Spanish nurseries than in northern Europe, some of the varieties you will not recognise, and the best varieties sell out fast.

Unless you have a local nursery with a good selection, obtain a few mail order catalogues from UK specialists and order early to avoid disappointments.

ROSES: The flowers and perfume can make a feature of a garden, patio or courtyard.

PRUNING: Get rid of any diseased leaves or stems.

Our experience is that exporters choose very strong rooted plants to avoid any complaints.

Don’t buy Spanish roses until you can see them in bloom.

One good thing about Spain is that it is easy to propagate roses from cuttings at any time of the year. So beg a cutting of every rose that impresses

you in your neighbours’ and friends’ gardens, or keep the stems of cut roses when they empty a vase to throw them away.

We use the following approach learned from a Spanish neighbour.

Cut off the flowering or leafy top. Slit the base of

the cutting for a centimetre and a half and squeeze in a dried sweet corn seed.

Plant the cutting so that two thirds of the cutting is buried making sure that the sweet corn is not dislodged.

Keep damp. We prefer to plant cuttings in the open ground to planting in pots… largely because we might forget to water them!

When the cutting shows growth grow it on in the same place or dig up and transplant when a year old during the late autumn, winter or early spring.

The heat and humidity of Spain can cause as many disease problems as in northern Europe. However the following actions should avoid most disasters.

Only use healthy cuttings and purchase healthy plants.

Never allow rose plants to dry out.

Feed by working well rotted manure into planting holes and surround the base of planted stems with a ring of horse manure each spring.

Plant garlic corms alongside each plant or if growing alongside the vegetable plant grow a line of garlic through the rose bed to protect against fungal diseases.

Spray plants against rust with an infusion made from horsetail and tomato leaves.

Prune off any diseased leaves and stems as soon as they occur and dispose of well away from rose bed.

The real-estate sector is crucial for economic growth BETWEEN late 1993 and the third quarter of 2008, Spain went through the most important and long-lasting economic growth period in its democratic history.

It achieved a sustained economic growth that raised employment levels, attracted new immigrants and made housing more affordable for families.

Spain’s real-estate sector

played a major role in the country’s economic growth for its undeniable contribution to production and employment rates.

However, this spell of good luck was cut short by the 2007 international financial crisis which sent shockwaves throughout Spain a year later, while the debt incurred by councils, households, autonomous communities, banks

and companies increased.

The efforts made to put the country back on track started to bear fruit in the second half of 2013 and in 2014. Economic growth, while still somewhat weak, can already be felt after a long recession.

Changes in monetary policy make it cheaper to access financing, help to reduce debt

and increase activity.

This also includes the realestate sector.

According to a report by the Institute of Economic Studies (IEE), building construction accounted for 40.6 per cent of the activity in the real-estate sector in 2008, while specialised activities in building construction accounted for 23.6 per cent,

which represents 64.2 per cent of the gross value added (GVA).

Real-estate activities represented 35.7 per cent.

In 2013, the contribution to GVA from building construction amounted to 25.8 per cent, while the contributions from specialised activities and real-estate activities amounted to 10.6 per cent and 63.7 per cent respectively.

A golden opportunity for non-EU nationals SPAIN’S real-estate market seems to be finally getting back on its feet.

According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), property sales in May rose by 12.6 per cent with respect to the previous month.

The biggest annual increases in May were seen on the Balearic Islands (33.1 per cent), Cantabria (30.4 per cent), Andalucia (10.7 per cent) and

Cataluña (3.1 per cent). On the other hand, Castilla-La Mancha, Galicia and Madrid

saw the largest decreases, with 15.2 per cent, 6 per cent and 5.5 per cent respectively.

Judging by figures released by the General Council of Notaries, the interest of Chinese investors in Spain’s realestate

market has skyrocketed.

This could be due to the ‘Golden Visa’ rules that grant citizenship to nationals from non-EU countries who invest at least €500,000 in property.

In fact, Chinese demand for Spanish properties is estimated to have increased by as much as 666 per cent compared to last year.

Demand from American nationals has grown by 143 per cent and by 115 per cent from Argentinians.
