Hope for jobseekers GREEN shoots of recovery are showing and that is good news for jobseekers as unemployment fell by 7.53 per cent in June.
When compared to 2013, the number of unemployed Axarquia residents has decreased by 1,870 and now totals 22,948.
A report by the MADECA Foundation said this positive trend is expected to consolidate in the coming months.

Tourism on the rise INTERNATIONAL tourism is on the rise in Malaga Province with an 8 per cent increase in the number of Europeans choosing the area as their favourite summer destination. So far this year, 2.3 million Europeans have passed through the arrival gates of Malaga Airport, many of them heading for the Axarquia. There has been an even bigger increase in the number of international
tourists from further afield, with 267,580 of them arriving from places as varied as China, the Far East and the United States; this makes for a 10 per cent rise in this group. Elias Bendodo, Provincial Delegate for Tourism, has commented that the numbers so far augur well for the yearly target of 10 million tourists, with five million of them coming between June and September.
It shows that unemployment in the construction sector is down by 25.92 per cent, by 11.8 per cent in the industrial sector and by 2.97 per cent in services. On the other hand, it increased by 12.21 per cent in agriculture. Most age groups seem to have benefited from the trend, with unemployment among workers younger than 25 decreasing by 7.43 per cent and by 2.89 per cent among workers between 25 and 44 years of age. However, it slightly increased for workers over 45, by 0.27 per cent. Unemployment among men decreased by 10.63 per cent and by 3.89 per cent among women. When compared to 2013, the number of signed contracts in the agricultural sector rose by 1.62 per cent and a huge 38.93 per cent in the industry sector. MADECA is a non-profit organisation in charge of promoting strategic initiatives for economic and social development in Malaga Province.
Birthplace of a local hero MEMBERS of the USSpain Council visited Macharaviaya, the birthplace of Bernardo de Galvez. Born on July 23 1746, Galvez was Viceroy of New Spain and helped the American colonies during the War of Independence. He beat the British at the Siege of Pensacola in 1781. The mayor, Antonio Campos, welcomed General Secretary of the US-Spain Council Fidel Sendagorta and they visited the Galvez crypt and family museum.
