Getting ready for all the fun of the sea

AFTER last year’s first ever Sea Festival on the Costa Tropical, the Asociacion Amigos del Mar Costa Tropical is organising a follow-up festival to take place on September 19 and 20 in La Herradura.

There will be an all sea-themed parade starting from Las Gaviotas school to the civic centre, where the exhibition hall is to be filled with sea-related pictures created by children.

Many more children’s activities are planned at the civic centre and on the beach.

There is also a treasure hunt for the adults.

Day Two will be full of more great things to take part in, including free try-dives in the sea, an underwater clean-up, a giant paella, and live interviews with marine experts during the lunchtime period.

All this will be followed by live music in the evening at the Plaza Nueva.

The square will also be home to a variety of stalls, all dedicated to the sea, with more activities in the pipeline.

Asociacion Amigos del Mar Costa Tropical is a non-profit, ocean conversationalist group, founded by Anne Zipse in 2014.

Its main goal is to promote marine awareness by various means, including educating the public with workshops, publicly promoting healthy marine interaction, conducting marine clean-ups (beach and sea) and hosting an annual sea festival, dedicated to showing love and appreciation for the marine environment.

NATIONAL POLICE have detained four men for selling drugs at the Weekend Beach Festival.

The detainees have been charged with crimes against public health. Police seized 10 grams of cocaine and 12.5 grams of ecstasy, a drug that acts as a stimulant and has been known to produce hallucinations, 10 grams of marijuana, 10 grams of hashish and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Letters 23 DECODING THE VINE: Scientists are looking to genetically change vines.

21st century vines SPANISH scientists are looking for ways to genetically change vines.

Jose Miguel Martinez Zapater, Head of the Vine and Wine Science Institute (ICVV) said that genetic changes in vines are crucial otherwise they will not be able to improve or withstand climate change or adapt to new consumption demands.

ICVV is working on international and national projects to find ways to adapt vines to new weather conditions and to consumer demand, said Zapater.

Regarding climate change, Zapater commented that vines are now being

affected by pests that were not a problem before or that did not use to affect them with such virulence. As far as demand goes, he said that consumers are now demanding more types of wine, especially white wines.

ICVV researchers are working on a project to decode the genome of the variety known as ‘tempranillo.’ “This will allow us to adapt it to new scenarios and develop new products,” said Zapater. The project will no doubt be economically beneficial for all Spanish regions growing ‘tempranillos,’ including the Axarquia.

Big investment for schools THE Education, Culture and Sports Department will invest more than €230,000 in two Nerja and Marbella schools.

The announcement was made through the Andalucian Public Institute for Infrastructure and Educational Services (ISE Andalucia).

The remodelling and improvement project will benefit 1,025 students and create 23 new

temporary jobs. The total budget adds up to €232,618.80 and will be invested in the Primary School ‘Nueva Nerja’ (CEIP) in Nerja and Vicente Aleixandre in Marbella.

The project is part of the Work Opportunities Plan of Andalucia (Plan OLA) authorised by the regional government to improve school infrastructures and create jobs in the construction sector.

In Malaga Province, the Plan OLA is expected to create close to 1,519 new jobs. The plan is being financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the European Social Fund (ESF).

As part of the project, €118,949.98 will be invested in the CEIP in a lift, another fire escape and in optimising the school’s electrical system.

International Festival of Benicassim returns ON July 24 it will be Festival Internacional de Benicassim (FIB) time again.

This is one of Spain’s biggest music festivals, almost comparable with Glastonbury, which started back in 1995 and has been celebrated every year since.

The concept is similar to other festival concepts: contemporary art, pop, rock, indie, electronic and many other styles of music as well as theatre, fashion and cinema, which all come together every third weekend of July in Valencia to celebrate art in all its forms.

The FIB is characterised by its eclecticism and its acceptance of all the latest innovative tendencies as opposed to most other music festivals which just stick to what is popular. The festival initially came under fire for not having enough national artistes in

The origins of the festival are in Madrid where two brothers, Miguel and Jose Moran, wanted their own music festival here in Spain instead of having to go abroad to enjoy them, so they set up in Valencia (traditional playground for Madrileños) and have been going very well ever since.

At the first ever FIB there were only 8,000 people but now has the capacity to take around 42,000 people every day.

This year, as is usual, there are a lot of famous names in the line up including Tinie Tempah, Kasabian, The Libertines, Manic Street Preachers, Lily Allen and many more will delight the 42,000 pairs of ears that will be present there.

Malaga province helps unemployed youth A TOTAL of 750 youngsters from the Malaga Province will benefit from training programmes organised by the regional government.

The initiative seeks to provide training in

traditional occupations to unemployed young people, aged 16 to 35, from Alhaurin el Grande, Antequera, Campillos, Coin, Estepona, Fuengirola, Gaucin, Ronda and Velez Malaga.

Each one of the 50 workshops will be 10 hours long, said Antonia Ledesma from the Education and Youth Department.

The training sessions are free and will be

taught from July until November by the Association of Professionals from Malaga’s Vocational Schools (APETMA).

Ledesma said that each participating municipality

chose up to five different workshops from a list provided by the regional government and that each municipality is in charge of selecting the participants out of those who register.

Drinking from 14 in Malaga ON average, teenagers in the Malaga Province begin drinking at age 14.

A study on alcohol, tobacco and drug consumption habits carried out by the Provincial Drug Addiction Service of Malaga’s Regional Government and the Faculty of Medicine of Malaga University determined that one out of five teenagers are at risk of becoming alcoholics.

These are some of the conclusions that arose from 820 surveys conducted among teenagers aged 11-19 from 10 schools in local municipalities, including Alameda, Algarrobo and Torrox.

Holiday rental regulations in Andalucia

By Maria Teresa Velasco – Velasco Lawyers LAST year’s update of the Law on Urban Rentals (LAU or Ley de Arrendamientos Urbanos in Spanish), stated that short term holiday rentals (less than a month) will be administered by autonomous regions within the framework of their local

tourism regulations.

The speed at which the new directives will be launched depends on the region. Specifically Andalucia will regulate holiday rentals before the end of the year (for the time being and until the law is in place, the LAU will still govern holiday rentals). This will transform the rental market in many ways and in particular will enforce

minimum quality standards and better protection of holiday tenants’ rights. It will also fight under-the-table rentals, where incomes are not declared to Spanish fiscal authorities. These changes will affect more than 15,000 people in Andalucia, mostly property owners and real estate agencies.

Landlords will be able to charge in advance a percentage of the rental at the time of the reservation, up to 30 per cent of the price of the total stay.

A database of homes for touristic use will be created along with the already existing rural holiday homes registry.

Each property will receive a registration number that will have to appear in all marketing materials or channels.

The rental activity will be considered illegal when the holiday rental is taking place in an unregistered property.

Sanctions will be regulated by the Tourism Law of Andalucia (Ley del Turismo de Andalucía Ley 13/2011), that distinguishes different levels of infractions. Depending of the gravity of the violation, fines starting from €2,000 will be charged.

RINCON DE LA VICTORIA Council has launched a recycling campaign on local beaches.

Using water efficiently THE regional government is sponsoring a study on the efficient use of water resources on avocado farms.

The study is being conducted through the Andalucian Institute of Agricultural and Fisheries Research and Training (IFAPA) in Churriana.

IFAPA President Victor Ortiz said the study’s aim is to describe the characteristics of irrigation techniques used in avocado crops in Velez-Malaga to advise farmers about the most efficient use of water resources.

Ortiz also said that another

important research project currently being carried out by IFAPA has to do with biological pest control. IFAPA researchers are looking at the economic losses brought about by mite pests affecting avocados, as well as at biological alternatives to combating pests affecting avocado crops.

IFAPA not only focuses on research but also on training. The institute organises workshops and courses for farmers where they are updated on the results of the IFAPA’s latest studies.

The initiative was organised by the Department of the Environment and Malaga Regional Government.

Head of the Department of the Environment Sergio Diaz said volunteers will give brochures to beachgoers with information highlighting the importance of recycling.

Rincon de la Victoria Mayor Francisco Salado underlined how important it is to “recycle and protect beaches.”

He also encouraged beachgoers to always use the bins located on the beach.

Furthermore, the campaign will analyse the sand to determine to what extent it has been damaged by solid waste.

It is estimated that every Spaniard generates on average 1.6 kilograms of waste every day, which means that Spain generates 25 million tons of waste every year.

NEWS Royal painting donated MALAGA painter Raul Berzosa has donated an oil painting of former Queen Sofia to Rincon de la Victoria Council.

The gift is symbolic of the generosity of one of Malaga’s most promising young painters, said Mayor Francisco Salado.

The portrait will be part of the municipal patrimony and taken to the Association of People with Learning Disabilities (AMIRAX).

The portrait depicts former Queen Sofia wearing an elegant red dress with the Rincon de la Victoria coast in the background. Its value has been estimated at €5,000.

Born in Malaga in 1979, Berzosa studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Granada in 1999.

He is a Bachelor of Arts in Art History.

Bogus gas company employees arrested GUARDIA CIVIL officers arrested two bogus gas men under alleged theft charges.

The detained would purportedly rob their victims while conducting gas ‘safety checks’ and repairs. They would also charge them a lot of money.

The police investigation started last May when a man, 84, lodged a complaint with the Guardia Civil in Canillas de Aceituno (Malaga Province) after €3,000 disappeared from his property after a visit from gas company employees. The man lived alone and was going to use the money to buy a hearing aid.

It appears the man got a call one day from a woman who identified herself as a gas

company representative. She told him that two gas company employees were soon going to pay him a visit and conduct some necessary repairs in his property.

The men charged the victim €356 and saw the man kept the money in envelopes in his closet.

When they were back a couple of days later to make sure everything was working the way it

should, one of the employees took the victim to the kitchen while the other one sneaked to his room and stole the money.

After they left, the victim realized the money was gone and called the police.

The neighbours claim they saw the two men driving away and throwing empty envelopes out of the car’s windows.

No drastic changes for school canteens THE Junta de Andalucia (regional government) said no drastic changes will be made to the services provided by school canteens.

Following criticism from Casares and Humilladero school authorities and a protest organised by parents and Almachar schools’ representatives at the Education Department, the Junta said the “services will continue to be provided under the same conditions as in previous years.”

The management of school canteens had so far been handled through agreements between local councils and the Public Department of Infrastructures and Educational Services, said the Education Department. However, “they must be adapted to current regulations once they are no longer valid,” which parents and municipal representatives thought meant that food quality would suffer and that fewer local products would be used.

In the case of Almachar, the meals served in the school canteen are prepared by two municipal cooks.

However, the Junta said that “the

NEWS Scottish writer in Axarquia SCOTTISH writer Ivar Alastair Watson has lived in La Viñuela for the past 30 years.

He recently published a novel called ‘Scotland the Brave: A tragedy’ which features the running down of the Clyde shipbuilding industry and the question of Scottish independence.

Watson taught English at the British Council Institutes in Sevilla and Barcelona and worked as an English lecturer at the Shah of Persia’s University at Shiraz.

He also taught English literature at the University of Deusto Bilbao and has given public lectures at the universities of Madrid and Valladolid. Watson also wrote ‘Glimpses of Deep Spain’.

AVOCADO SALES: Trops have sold 12 million kilos.

Subtropics still on top AXARQUIA-based cooperative Trops has a sales volume exceeding €40m.

Located in Velez Malaga, Trops encompasses more than 2,000 Malaga and Granada farmers and is the European leader in sales of avocado, mango and other subtropical products.

Even if mango sales have increased, avocado continues to rule among Spanish subtropical products. Trops has so far sold 12 million

The ugly truth of it

HE international Handball Federation has sparked a controversy by insisting that female players wear skimpy bikinis to play the sport. In this they are taking a lead from Beach Volleyball, which has long since had a similar dress, or rather undress, code.

Spanish clubs, backed by their federation, are right to oppose the move.

In a lowest common denominator move, the international authorities are seeking to popularise their sport by using the bodies of the women as the main attraction rather than the sport itself.

That is an insult to the women concerned. No one has the right to tell the players to dress immodestly if they want to compete. What next - a ban on players deemed too ugly?

Most motorists would fail test ONLY 2.8 per cent of Spanish drivers would pass the driving theory test if they were to take it now; 20.7 per cent of drivers would get fewer than 22 questions right.

The highest percentage of correct answers would be related to road safety and the lowest to road rules.

Murcia is the community with the worst scores.

A report released by the CNAE (National Confederation of Driving Schools) shows that only three out of every 100 drivers would pass the test, which requires only three, or less, mistakes to pass.

One thousand, one hundred people took part in the survey which asked seasoned drivers,

Faster ambulance response pledge THE regional government has admitted that delays have sometimes occurred with responding to calls to the 112 emergency services.

The admission was made during a recent visit to Elche by Luis Santamaria Ruiz, who heads the regional government’s Interior department. He promised to take action following talks with the town’s Social Action Councillor, Antonio Luis Martinez-Pujalte.

Born in Velez-Malaga on June 21, 1954, Amparo Muñoz was crowned Miss Costa del Sol and Miss Spain in 1973 and Miss Universe a year later, when the event was held in the Philippines. She passed away in 2011 at 56 years of age.

Despite its name, ‘Miss Latin America of the World’ is by no means restricted to women from Latin American countries.

It is open to women of Latino descent from all corners of the world.

Current crown-holder is Julia Guerra from Brazil.

Spain has never won ‘Miss Latin America of the World’ since it was first introduced in 1981.

UNTIL the end of June, the Spanish company Gowex was assumed to be worth €1.4 billion.

Days later its shares plummeted by 60 per cent and trading was halted. The company, which provides public Wi-Fi throughout the world, went into liquidation.

Approximately 5,000 small investors lost between €10,000 and €15,000 while the company’s 172 employees’ described themselves as “in a state of absolute shock.”

“Society needs more businessmen like you,” the president of the Spanish government Mariano Rajoy recently said to Gowex CEO, Jenaro Garcia Martin.

If you think a poorly repaired roof is a disaster how do you rate a child betrayed by inept teachers, a home-owner scammed by a bent lawyer or electorate cheated by corrupt politicians?

Today in Britain several hundred trade associations represent as many professions.

Many exist to protect the interests of members rather than their clients. The public appear to have little faith in those that represent the professions; medicine, law, financial, police, public life.

Ironically, the best associations may be those that represent tradesmen.

If you can’t guarantee your doctor or airline pilot isn’t an imposter how can you presume your builder or electrician is genuinely qualified?

You cannot? As far as I am aware there is nothing along the Englishspeaking communities of Mediterranean Spain that could be reasonably classed as a trade association.

There are scores of business associations fronting networking opportunities. However, as far as

protecting the public is concerned they’re as useless as a walking stick with a wheel on it.

Businesses and their clients would benefit from a trade association that thoroughly vetted applicants, monitored ongoing performance backed by a system of customer mediation in the event of disputes.

In the absence of such, no genuine service provider will be offended if you ask for customer references that can be checked if you are unsure.

Don’t be shy about politely questioning their background.

Professionals will be pleased that you show an interest. The difficulty could be in shutting them up. If they are evasive or unconvincing walk away.

A genuine business has no qualms about your approaching another for a comparable quotation.

Do so. Never pay upfront but by progress with a 20 per cent on satisfactory completion payment.

Internet websites are a favoured target and Barcelona has fired the latest shots in this ongoing war with a €30,000 fine for Airbnb Online Services Spain.

The San Francisco-based venture lists more than 500,000 private properties in 192 countries.

Cataluña, and particularly Barcelona, is a popular market, but some of the lets offered on the site are in private homes and infringe Catalan regulations. Some apartments are similarly unauthorised .

It is only one of eight letting sites to be fined by the Catalan government but Airbnb’s success

Cataluña was the first Spanish region to clamp down on private lets calculating that at least one million of the beds on offer were illegal.

Around 200,000 tourist beds there have since been registered with local authorities as guaranteeing minimum standards.

Airbnb hosts demonstrated recently in Barcelona, defending their right to rent out property.

Only a quarter of them earned more than the minimum salary, an Airbnb study found, and renting enabled many to hold on to their homes during the economic crisis.

The same report also estimated that the rentals’ site brought an extra €128 million to Barcelona.

A new study looking into the work hours of managers in the UK uncovered that about half of UK managers work an extra day or two of unpaid overtime per week.

Tot that up and that’s 52 or 104 extra days of unpaid work a year! The managers in the survey say they feel under pressure to work extra hours from their employers due to a general pressure to get things done and easy access to email through smartphone technology.

A proxy vote, however, with written authorisation and signed by the owner is perfectly acceptable. Furthermore, the law provides that decisions taken by the members actually present can be valid,.

MANAGERS: Under pressure due to modern technology.

technology some employees can’t help but obsessively check email outside office hours.

It can be stressful to receive an urgent late night email and many employees feel compelled to respond immediately.

The study concentrated on managers, many of whom are probably on decent wages being in a management position, but there are so many different types of employees working over and above their contracted hours these days, like teachers, scientists and hospitality staff to mention but a few.

And it’s not just

technology that is to blame for these employees working extra hours. Staff knuckle down and do extra work for fear of losing their job too. We all know people who work unpaid hours simply because they have a mortgage to pay and bills to settle and they don’t want to rock the boat and find themselves unemployed.

Others know that they need to get the job done but they are just too

scared to ask their boss for the extra money.

Every employee goes through a busy period when they feel motivated to work above and beyond their contractual hours, but excessive unpaid hours are not sustainable, nor fair on the employee.

In the long-term it’s important to focus on how to tackle a workload within your contracted hours, keep your boss happy and enjoy your life!

A long, short-selling story by Gotham City WITHOUT Gotham City Research’s investigation, the Spanish company Gowex would probably still be trading.

It would probably still be carrying on the false accounting that brought it to the attention of Gotham City.

So is the company, which carried out a similar operation with the British insurance group Quindell, a financial altruist?

On the contrary, Gotham City, named after Batman’s home town, is accused of being a “bear raider.”

This means shortselling: buying securities, agreeing to pay at a later date by which time the price falls sufficiently to make a killing.

Presumably Gotham

did exactly this before trading in Gowex shares was halted.

The shadowy company makes no bones about being a short-seller but only short-sellers can expose the misdeeds of fraudsters, “as the Gowex case clearly demonstrates,” it piously stated. “Auditors, regulators, lawyers, investment bankers and others rarely detect fraud.

Insiders and short-sellers do.”

Market participants, the media and regulators should instead focus on the validity of a shortseller’s message instead of shooting the messenger, Gotham City said.

“We are confident that for every 1,000 or 10,000 corporations, CEOs or stock promoters that

have profited from wrong-doing, maybe one short-seller has.”

The same statement commended Jenaro Garcia Martin’s subsequent confession as “very rare, courageous and honourable.”

Nor did Gotham City believe that Gowex was a reflection on Spain or the Spanish people, the statement continued. “If anything, the Spanish people have demonstrated that there exists a sound culture of honesty, morality and honour.”

Kind words but small comfort to Gowex shareholders and employees. And still less comfort to those responsible for Spain’s business reputation.

Taxman casts a long shadow over us all…

PAYING tax in the UK now he has retired to Spain seems unfair to Allan David Duhig, although he says: “I suppose someone has to pay for the immigrants and asylum seekers flooding in and sponging off the UK.” But he’s the immigrant in Spain if he spends more than 183 days in the tax year here. If he hasn’t filed a Spanish tax return and declared all his pensions, he’s the one who’s sponging off the country where he’s living.

It’s not possible to choose which country you pay tax in.

Once he’s filed his Spanish tax return he can apply for tax exemption in the UK. Should Mr Duhig own a property in Spain but spend less than 183 days in the tax year here, then he should file a tax return as a non-resident.

Also, since last year, all Spanish residents must declare assets abroad of more than €50,000 in total in any one asset-class.

Spaniards have the obligation to present the form too, not just foreigners.

Ask for information at the local Spanish tax office. I’ve found the staff generally very helpful, provided you speak Spanish.

I hope Mr Duhig does speak Spanish, because, based on his attitude to immigrants in the UK, no doubt he’d expect them to speak English. Why should he be treated any differently in Spain?

Don’t hesitate, Mr Duhig, because if Revenue caught you then Hacienda will too one day.

Maybe someone there reads letters like these, searching for tax dodgers.

No change I READ about the new daily train from Alicante to Zaragoza which says that it takes about 4.5 hours and there is no need to change at Madrid.

I have just been on the RENFE site and, yes, there is a train at 4.20pm that takes 4.5 hours but you still have to change trains in Madrid.

Snail’s pace TWO years ago I attempted to make my UK tax return via the internet and needed an identity code.

This was sent by mail and when it arrived there was a message to the effect that the code must be used within 28 days of issue. That was six weeks earlier!

A replacement also took six weeks to arrive and made me late in submitting my return although my appeal against the potential penalty was granted.

Safe fracking IN response to Keith Hallam’s somewhat vitriolic assessment of hydraulic fracturing, and as someone who has worked for an American company in the oil industry, I would like to offer the following facts.

Fracturing has been used to increase production on millions of oil and natural gas wells since

1949. According to the International Journal of Human and Ecological Risk Assessment, waste water and chemical fluid from fracturing operations can contain potentially toxic chemicals as well as natural contaminants from deep underground.

Several studies on this subject have concluded that fracturing did not pose a risk to drinking water, helping lead to its exemption from the Safe Drinking Water Act. As with all water management operations in Europe and America, underground water reserves are required to undergo stringent forms of treatment by centralised treatment facilities prior to being classified as of drinkable quality. To the best of my knowledge, since fracturing operations have been used, no person or company has been successfully prosecuted for any environmental violation involving this activity.

Today, approximately 30 per cent of recoverable oil and natural gas reserves in the US are accessible through hydraulic fracturing; this is about seven billion barrels of oil and 600 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

It would be a great shame to prohibit the potential economic growth in this area until such time as we have conclusive proof that hydraulic fracturing does in fact threaten our very fragile planet.

Short-changed MANY houses have been on the market for over 12 months and a house valued at €160,000 in June 2013 would have given the seller £138,000 with the pound sterling at €1.16.

However, in June 2014, the pound was worth €1.25 and the seller would only get £128,000 give or take a couple of pounds.

What a difference!

Should the estate agent not increase the value of their client’s property? Adding €10,000 to a €160,000 property would give an increase of £8,000.

I am sure many sellers are not aware of the price difference since the pound sterling has increased. It might be better to sell in pounds, showing the figure you want or the equivalent in euros on the day.

Are true gents a dying breed?

Does your man pass the perfect gent test? He'll take your car for an MOT, notice your new hairstyle and only watch football on his laptop... according to a recent study. Is your man a true gent? Do they exist or are they a dying breed?

AWYER Annemarie Bakker of Dianium & Lex in Denia, Costa Blanca, said as a woman aged over 50 she still experiences a lot of politeness and gentlemanly behaviour but thinks it is something more prevalent in the older generation as her daughter oftens complains about it in the men she meets.

But Annemarie also thinks it is not too important: “I think just being polite and respecting each other is the most important thing. I have taught my children to be respectful and to treat each other as you would want to be treated yourself.”

In Almeria, Elaine Brown of the MACS Cancer Support Group, said: “Good manners make a gentleman always! My father would always say please and thank you to my mother, even if they’d had an argument. LENTY of ‘stick’ coming the ol’ boy’s way this week. My appearance in Channel 5’s OAPs Behaving Badly has released a torrent of comments.

I’ve heard opinions as far apart as ‘sleazy rubbish’ to ‘hysterically funny’ in the last few days. However, I am delighted to report that at least 90 per cent of them have been positive. The ‘agins’ have been mostly from those a little nearer to home. Some of whom were, probably quite rightly, not too happy with a close relative being depicted as a sex-mad, 75-year-old, rampaging around Tenerife, pockets bulging with Viagra. I must confess that this was the picture that emerged, but in my somewhat weak defence I would like to make clear that the hour-long programme was recorded over some six weeks. With cutting and editing, producers can create almost any scenario they choose. My observations concerning Viagra were, however, although not meant to dominate the presentation, completely intentional.

There is no shame in enjoying a healthy sex life in the so-called twilight years.

Only four out of 10 Spaniards do sport regularly

ONLY four out of 10 Spaniards (38.6 per cent) regularly practise one or more sports, mainly as a source of health and to relieve tension.

According to a survey by the Centre for Sociological Research, cycling, running and swimming are the favoured activities

amongst the Spanish, often in a group practice (40 per cent), whereas 27.3 per cent preferred to do exercise alone.

Those who do not practise any form of regular sport argue that it’s because they simply do not like it (27.3 per cent) or blame a lack of time (15.9 per cent).

Half of the respondents claimed to have less than four hours a day of free time, outside of work and family and household obligations.

In this free time, sport is listed in seventh place after being with family, watching TV, hanging out with friends, reading, surfing the internet and doing crafts.

Calorie counting microwaves TIRED of counting calories in a bid to stay slim? Then a new microwave creation could be the solution.

A prototype ‘microwave’ has been developed by a US company that uses microwaves which travel through food to measure its fat and water content and therefore its calorie content. General Electric has made the unnamed calorie counter saying it can accurately reveal the number of calories within a meal at the push of a button.

The development team have not revealed when it may be launched to the public or how much it could cost.

Google beats the GP for younger women A STUDY of 18 to 24-yearold females has found that more than a third would rather Google their health symptoms than see a doctor about intimate issues.

The survey of 1,000 people found that young women are three times more likely to be embarrassed talking to their GP than the over-55s.

As a result, young women (92 per cent) are turning more to the internet to self-diagnose

online, according to the research by women’s healthcare experts Balance Activ.

More than half of young women (56 per cent) admit searching for their condition online within 12 hours of any symptoms arising, compared to just 7 per cent who said they would book an appointment with their doctor in that time, and just 28 per cent of young women said they would most trust a GP’s advice.

World’s largest tumour removed DOCTORS have removed what is believed to be the world’s largest tumour from a man in China.

The growth was on the 37-year-old man’s leg and grew to more than 17 stone. It began as a birth mark which was removed when he was 12 but it soon began growing back again.

The 1.2 metre tumour made up two-thirds of his total body weight and took nine doctors 16 hours to remove it.

Take extra care to ensure your garden survives the scorching heat

SPANISH summers are hot and gardens need extra care to ensure that they are colourful and survive the scorching southerly winds. This article indicates what needs to be done.

Keeping plants alive Keeping plants alive consists of four things. a. Keeping the roots of plants constantly damp both in the garden and containers. Whether you water with a drip irrigation system, hose or watering can this can be difficult to judge unless you dig a hole to check what layers are dry and at what level the soil is still moist. The latter is time consuming, difficult to do in closely planted beds and judgemental as what one person regards as damp another person may regard as wet and it’s a hard lesson to learn when your favourite plants keel over and die.

The solution is to purchase a soil moisture meter. Typically they have a probe to push into the earth in a garden bed or the compost in a pot down to 15 centimetres of depth and do not need a battery to operate them.

The best have a second probe that measures the acidity of the soil or compost. Ours also has a light meter which is useful in checking the amount of light reaching to the back

of a naya or the shade of a tree where you are considering placing pot plants. b. Placing tender plants that are easily shrivelled in full sun or by blazing hot winds in semi, dappled or full shade and watering twice a day if necessary. This includes annual herbs such as parsley or basil. c. Keeping roots cool by shading them with slabs of rock or mulches of compost or bark chippings. d. Ensuring that you plant up your garden with plants that are naturally drought resistant and capable of slowing down their growth and moisture requirements during the hottest weeks.

Keeping the garden colourful Stimulating prolonged or repeat flowerings consists of watering as above plus regular dead heading as soon as flowers start to dry up.

This prevents plants from using energy to produce seeds rather than new flower buds.

Most plants will grow and flower well without regular feeding, but should you consider it necessary use a feed high in potash rather than nitrogen. Regular feeding with the latter may result in excessive greenery at the expense of flowers.

Fruit trees also need care It is essential that fruit trees with fruit are watered thoroughly so that their deepest roots are kept constantly damp so that fruit develops continuously. Intermittent

WATERING: Difficult to judge just how much. watering can result in splitting fruit, major fruit falls or insect and fungal attacks. If you planted your fruit trees in previously enriched soil and gave the trees a spring feed a summer feed is not essential.

The vegetable plot can still be productive Provided they are frequently watered, fruit vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, courgettes and melons

swell and ripen well in sunny weather.

Root vegetables such as peanuts, carrots and beetroot will grow and keep well in the soil if kept damp but quick growing radishes will soon go to seed if not harvested when young.

As the summer warms up flowering artichokes will stop producing and July is a good time to sow seeds to produce broccoli plants for planting out in

the autumn.

However leaf vegetables are best shaded for at least part of the day to keep them growing without going to seed.

Weeds will be less of a problem than in the spring but will need keeping under control by hoeing and adding to the compost heap. It’s a good idea to dampen the compost heap each month to prevent it from drying out.

Tips to create a truly great burger THERE is hardly any food as international as the burger - it can be found from China to Canada and it has many different incarnations.

Here are a few tips to make a perfect burger patty.

The number one thing to bear in mind is that good meat is needed for a good burger.

The best burgers are made from the cheaper cuts of meat as these have more flavour and, because the meat will be

minced, there are no worries about the toughness of the cut; the shoulder or brisket make a perfect burger.

All the patties should be of a uniform shape and size - the best way to do this without scales is to take the lid of a jar and use that as a measure.

It is very important to remember to make an indentation in the centre of the patty before cooking it.

Making an indentation helps the burger to hold its shape while cooking.

Never wash raw chicken RAW chicken should never be rinsed; it is a dangerous practice.

By rinsing it, infectious droplets of water are being distributed around the kitchen and can fall as far as three feet before landing on a surface.

According to the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA), this is a very dangerous habit, and it is urging people to stop this practice which, essentially, spreads plague.

The FSA has released a public service announcement (which can be found on its website) and has warned the general public about the practice.

“The call comes as new figures show that 44 per cent of people always wash chicken before cooking it - a practice that can spread campylobacter bacteria onto hands, work surfaces, clothing and cooking equipment through the

ROYAL OWL: Took a ride on a paddle board.

Royal owl saved by a surfer A PADDLE surfer who was in the waters off the breakwater of the Puente Romano hotel in Marbella saved a royal owl.

The royal owl, a protected species in Spain, was felled from the sky when it was set upon by a gang of seagulls which were attacking it en masse.

Luckily for the owl the paddle boarder was nearby and was able to pick it up out of the water and take it to land to recover. Far from being scared of the paddle boarder, the owl willingly got onto the proffered paddle and took the

ride back to the shore as though it happened every day.

CREAS (Recuperation Centre for Threatened Species) was called and arrived promptly taking the bird away with them in a cardboard box to be looked after at their centre for wounded animals.

Royal owls are night hunters and rarely seen in daylight; the bird was probably from the Sierra de Ojen where there is known to be a small colony of them after the reintroduction of breeding pairs into the area in the late 1970’s.

IF you have a dog with badly knotted fur, the easiest way to get him to hate being groomed is to introduce the brush and comb at this point. Badly knotted fur should only be dealt with by experts.

Consult your vet or a grooming specialist.

Some breeds such as Cocker Spaniels, Yorkshire Terriers, Scotties, Schnauzers and Poodles need to have their fur trimmed regularly. Inquire if you are in any doubt. Bathing regularly is not a good idea as a rule. Even dog shampoo removes natural oils from the coat. This can cause skin irritations and a dull coat.

By nature dogs are hunters and instinct tells it that to get close to a herd to kill for food, it should smell like the herd.

Nail cutting. Never buy a nail cutter and never take advice from anyone except a vet. When nails are very long, cutting

should be carried out by a vet as it is easy to cut into a vein in the nail. A vet will be able to cauterise it at once should this happen. The best way to keep your dog’s nails in trim is to take lots of walks on hard surfaces.
