Fruit growers call for better infrastructure AXARQUIA and Granada subtropical fruit growers are calling for improved water infrastructure in the area.

Festival attracts 37,000

THE Weekend Beach Festival in Torre del Mar has been hailed a success.

The event far exceeded expectations, attracting 37,000 people, more than 7,000 on July 3 and more than 15,000 on July 4 and 5.

The economic impact of the festival is estimated to be between €1 and €2 million and each visitor is believed to have spent on average €50. However, no official figures have been released yet.

The first edition of the Weekend Beach Festival closely resembled other pioneering summer events held in Spain – like Esparrago Rock in Granada – with a myriad

of musical acts which would please some of the most demanding audiences and draw thousands from Spain’s autonomous communities.

This year’s line-up included bands like Les Castizos, Los Zigarros, Muchachito y sus compadres and Mago de Oz.

Legions of music fans flocked to Torre del Mar from as far away as Madrid, Extremadura and Salamanca, looking to quench their thirst for music, sun, drinks and fun.

“Starting from today, Velez Malaga Council will work towards organising the second edition of the

Weekend Beach Festival to consolidate it next year and turn it into one of the best in Spain,” said VelezMalaga Mayor Francisco Delgado Bonilla. “We have worked for a full year on the event. We are pleased with how it turned out. It was a great weekend of harmony, leisure and entertainment,” he added.

As stated by Lorca, there are swamps in Granada that have lacked the necessary water channels for years.

On the other hand, and despite lower production levels in the avocado harvest, Trops has achieved ‘extraordinary’ prices in the last three months, averaging more than €2 per kilogram, according to Lorca.

In addition, he expects the mango harvest this year to reach 12 million kilograms, compared to only four million in 2013, as a result of the poor weather conditions.

Exports bloom

IT would certainly not be a bold statement to say that Malaga exports are in high demand in Europe and elsewhere.

Export rates to many European countries have considerably increased in 2014, with Italy, Poland, Portugal and France ranking high on the list of foreign markets that welcome Malaga products with open arms.

It is estimated that agricultural exports to Italy increased by 848.6 per cent between January and April 2014, reaching 24,004 tons valued at €36.2 million, compared to 1,792 tons in the same period of 2013, valued at €3.8 million. This represents an

increase of more than 1,200 per cent in volume.

Data from Andalucia’s Trade Promotion Agency indicate that exports to Poland in the same four-month period have exceeded €1.7 million and reached 873 tons, compared to €233,000 and 123 tons in 2013, a 642 per cent increase in value and 610 per cent increase in volume.

Furthermore, exports to France are estimated at €45.4 million and to Portugal at €37 million, which represents 18.3 per cent and 14.9 per cent respectively of production in Malaga Province.

Star turn for Rincon fair SINGER-SONGWRITER David DeMaria will be the highlight of the Rincon de la Victoria Fair.

Jerez de la Frontera-born DeMaria, 38, has sold more than one million records throughout his eight-year career and will be performing his greatest hits, including ‘Precisamente Ahora’, ‘Enamorada’ and ‘Cada Vez Que Estoy Sin Ti’ and presenting his

latest album ‘Otras Vidas’.

The free concert is scheduled to start on Sunday July 20 at 11.30pm.

“It is a pleasure for us to welcome such a great Andalucian artist,” said Culture, Fairs and Festivities Councillor Antonio Jose Martin.

The fair will be held from July 15 until July 20 in honour of Our Lady of Mount

Carmel, he added.

Rincon de la Victoria Mayor Francisco Salado underlined the fact that the council had focused on local artists when organising the event.

He also commented on the economic impact the fair will have on tourism and local businesses. “It is a family fair visited by thousands of people every year,” he said.

Beach bars THE Junta de Andalucia is currently taking steps to speed up the licence granting process for beach bars in Malaga Province.

European hot air balloon festival THE EUROPEAN balloon festival, which runs from July 9 to July 13, is taking place in Igualada, Barcelona.

It is one of the most important in Southern Europe, certainly the most important in Spain.

The festival started in 1997 and since then it has been held every year with ever-increasing interest from the public. One of the most popular aspects of the festival is the photography competition, which is being held again this year; anyone wishing to take part should send their pictures of the festival to Igualada Council before September 5.

The event is usually well attended by both amateur enthusiasts and professionals and also brings with it thousands of tourists who go just to see the spectacular array of multi-coloured balloons.

Visitors can take advantage of the opportunity to ride in a balloon if they book in advance with the relevant authorities.

The festival will end with a spectacular music and fireworks’ display.

Cyberbullying on the rise

RENEWABLES: They are part of the goals of Europe 2020.

Europe 2020 aim THE local council’s Development and Housing Department will

invest €922,348 in public houses in Velez-Malaga and Almachar.

The project aims at complying with the goals of Europe 2020 - European Commission strategy which include reducing greenhouse emissions, increasing the share of renewable energy and greater energy efficiency.

The project includes improving the insulation of facades, repairing sanitary networks and installing double-glazed thermally-insulated windows.

CYBER-BULLYING is getting more widespread, according to police.

During a meeting convened by Torrox authorities to discuss the issue of domestic violence, Guardia Civil officers said that “cyber-bullying is now more common.”

Torrox’s councillor for Equality, Mari Nieves Ramirez, said: “Several measures were discussed to prevent sexting, grooming and cyber-bullying among young people.” She went on to say institutions combating domestic violence are worried about these practices since access to private information and photographs through social media, phone apps and computers is now more frequent.

Local government will continue to make resources available to achieve that objective.

Former mayor sentenced to prison for illegal building A FORMER Competa mayor has been sentenced to two years behind bars for building on

protected land.

The Fourth Criminal Court in Malaga sentenced Leovigildo Lopez

for violating territorial planning legislation. Lopez was also sentenced to pay a €7,200 fine.

Torrox summer bus line for its partying youth TORROX has created a summer bus line for its youth.

Partying, alcohol and driving often result in tragedy for a lot of people, especially for young people during the summer. That is why Torrox Council launched a bus line to drive passengers from the municipality to the coast.

“We launched this initiative 14 years ago and it has worked very well so far,” said Mari Nieves Ramirez, Head of the Youth Department of the Torrox Council.

“We provide our citizens with an alternative night transport service that can reduce the number of

The ‘Priva-te’ will operate in July and August between 11pm and

4am, including Saturday August 9 during the Loona Festival and between August 14 and 17 during the El Morche Fair.

Lopez was accused of building a warehouse on land protected from development in Canillas de Albaida in the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park. He was also accused of not having the mandatory construction licence.

According to the sentence Lopez built a two storey warehouse in a spot called Cortijo Ranuelas inside the natural park. The warehouse was located inside the ruins of a previous building.

As stated in the sentence, Lopez knew a licence was mandatory since he had been mayor in Competa. It appears he originally planned to go to the council with the intention of requesting permission. However, he never did and instead started construction.

Environmental agents discovered the warehouse in August 2009.

The former Competa mayor had been convicted of the same crime in February 2009, while he was still in office, which the Criminal Court considered to be an aggravating circumstance.

Fire destroys restaurant A FIRE has ravaged a restaurant in El Morche.

La Farola restaurant on Avenida España was scorched by the flames and two adjacent houses had to be evacuated.

“We can kiss our summer season goodbye now,” said heartbroken restaurant owner Pablo Calvo. “This spells ruin for us. But at least we were insured,” he added.

The fire broke out at around 3am and Nerja firefighters managed to put out the flames in less

than two hours.

Eight people from two adjoining houses were evacuated due to the smoke but did not require medical attention.

Calvo, who managed the restaurant with his father and brother, said: “Thank God no one was injured. It could have been a real catastrophe because we had butane canisters in the restaurant.”

The cause of the fire seems to have been an electrical fault.

TORRE DEL MAR hotels were almost fully booked during the Weekend Beach Festival held last weekend.

Deputy Mayor Emilio Martin and Tourism Councillor Rocio Ruiz said the event had had a positive impact on the municipality’s economy.

“The festival is the result of the work done throughout the year to bring to Torre del Mar a musical event like this. I would like to thank the organisers, the police officers, Civil Protection, the Red Cross and the Fire Department for their work,” said Martin.

School caretaker on abuse charges A SCHOOL caretaker has been charged for allegedly molesting two girls aged five and six.

The man, 60, was released on charges and suspended from work, police sources told Europa Press.

Local Police officers in Rincon de la Victoria were alerted to an alleged child molestation case involving a female student, five, at the Gregorio Marañon de La Cala public school. The girl had allegedly been molested in a bathroom.

The law enforcement officials decided to contact and inform the school’s principal who got in touch with the girl’s parents. It appears they had chosen not to lodge a complaint to protect their daughter.

However, the police

contacted the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Juveniles, which asked the local council what measures had been taken regarding the caretaker.

Rincon de la Victoria Council said the man was on sick leave at the time the enquiries started.

Nevertheless, municipal sources told Europa Press that the man has been suspended from work

without pay until the case has been solved.

A month later, the girl’s parents decided to lodge a formal complaint, which prompted another family to come forward with a similar case. It is alleged a six-year-old girl had also been molested by the same man.

He was arrested and the Guardia Civil is in charge of the current investigation.

Discover the secrets of the Treasure Cave

Peruvian ballet comes to Nerja THE National Peruvian Ballet Ensemble will perform at the 55th International Music and Dance Festival in La Cueva de Nerja on July 24.

Created in May 1967, the dancers will put on a performance ‘based on the lyricism of movement’ which requires no sceno-

graphy, only special lighting to emphasise the beauty of the cave’s natural features.

The ensemble combines classic ballet with modern techniques reflecting the feelings of Peruvian people and the joy of ballet while showcasing the myriad of cultural roots found in the Andean nation.

TOURISTS will get to explore the secrets of the Cueva del Tesoro (Treasure Cave) in Rincon de la Victoria.

Following the example of the Nerja caves, where adventurous caving enthusiasts have been able to marvel at ancient cave paintings for almost a decade, Rincon de la Victoria Council is offering local residents and tourists the opportunity to visit what it claims to be the only cave of marine origin in Europe.

Visitors will be able to take a trip of up to four hours into the 1.5kilometre cave and quench their thirst for scientific knowledge. The cave used to be off limits to the public.

“There will be two different routes, a green one and a red one, depending on how challenging they are,” said Tourism Councillor Marta Marin.

The green route will not require any special physical training, while adventure enthusiasts will need

The 18-year-old, said to be from Iceland, was on the Inferno attraction when tragedy struck.

An investigation will be launched, and let us hope the cause is found and steps taken to make sure it never happens again.

But for the family of this young man it is too late. Amusement parks are supposed to give the illusion of danger so that people can get their thrills in complete safety. It is no use saying, as the Terra Mitica park operators have done, that there have been no fatal accidents until this one since the park was opened. The simple fact is that one death is one death too many.

People have the right to take their families to such parks in total

confidence that their safety is assured.

Let us hope the park’s owners are held to account.

Mallorca, or rather Magaluf, is getting quite a reputation for itself with the sleazy antics of some British tourists. In the latest scandal to hit the UK tabloid press headlines, an 18year-old girl was filmed performing sex acts in a bar for a free drink.

This says more about British society than it does about Mallorca. Let us hope no one is put off visiting the beautiful island by the lurid headlines surrounding the drunken antics of tourists visiting one small district.

The rest of the law-abiding and moral businesses should not be tarred with the same brush. They deserve better.

Chicken pricing ‘unfair’ THE chicken production sector has accused Spain’s supermarket chains of pricefixing.

Consumers should pay between €2.45 and €2.76 a kilo, according to Ministry of Agriculture calculations, but supermarkets sell at an average €2.18 a kilo while traditional butcher’s shops charge around €2.75.

WHAT was once the tallest building in Spain now belongs to the richest man in China.

Edificio España, a white elephant bought by Banco Santander in 2007 for €379 million just as the property crisis hit, was bought by Wang Jianlin.

This was common knowledge as long ago as last March, but the purchase has only recently been confirmed.

Wang heads Dalian Wanda and is China’s largest property developer although the group also has interests in enterprises ranging from tourism and cinema to retailing.

Wang paid €265 million for the emblematic building with the blessing of Madrid’s regional government.

The bank had commissioned architects Norman Foster and Carlos Lamela to draw up plans for 300 luxury apartments, a hotel and a shopping centre.

Although the new owner has been in touch with Foster and Lamela it is not confirmed whether Wang will go ahead with earlier plans or introduce others.

Whatever he decides, there is likely to be little delay. Rapidity is what sets him apart from rivals, Wang maintains, and his projects rarely take longer than 18 or 24 months.

First he decides on an opening date, Wang told a masterclass at the China Europe International Business School

(CEIBS). “We have never postponed a project, not even by one day,” he remarked.

This rapidity saves money, he added: “In the 100 or so projects that Wanda has invested in over the past 10 years, costs are always lower than the estimate and net profits always above it.”

Wang, needless to say, was referring to projects inside China.

Whether the formula will travel well remains to be seen, insiders said.

SPANISH construction giant OHL transferred 49 per cent of OHL Rus to Marina Sechina last December.

Sechina is the ex-wife of Igor Sechin, a former KGB agent and right-hand man of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.

Two years before the transaction, OHL obtained contracts worth €2.48 billion from the Russian government.

The impact of the Spanish multinational, a world leader in railway construction, was first felt in Russia in 2011. Its Czech subsidiary won a €1.95billion contract, OHL’s biggest until then, to construct a 390-kilometre single track railway for transporting coal between Obskaya and Nadym.

This was followed by the Olympic Flame touristsports complex for the Winter Olympics in Sochi

and an 11-storey hotel in Novosibirsk.

Meanwhile, OHL created its Russian subsidiary in May 2012, of which 49 per cent is now in the hands of Sechina. She spent the rouble equivalent of €105, as the OHL Rus’s capital amounts to just €220, revealed the Spanish daily ABC. She will now be entitled to half of the company’s future profits.

Sechina entered the business scene only after separating from her husband in 2011, although the break-up was amicable, sources reveal.

OHL acknowledged its links to Igor Sechin’s exwife but the company is inactive and has not made bids for infrastructure contracts, a spokesman said. Sechina will in any case soon leave OHL Rus, according to official sources quoted by ABC.

Effort, cost effectiveness and results are much higher in the private sector than in the public sector. Official figures show that public sector workers are 63 per cent more likely to take a ‘sickie’ than are private sector workers. The self-employed just shrug illness off.

Self-employed staff tend to be optimistic, customer-friendly achievers. The dispirited ‘hard done by’ are those whose income is guaranteed regardless of their performance. A safe, salaried job is a curse on society. Robbery by indolence, it fails to bring contentment or a sense of achievement to those ensnared.

As an employer you might find that gradually reducing wages and switching to a system of performance-related earnings pays dividends.

Bonuses and incentives fuel employee motivation and efficiency, reduce staff absence and increase profitability.

Thumbs down all round for redundancy tax WHEN Hacienda gives with one hand, it takes away with the other.

So to offset next year’s lower taxes, the government intends to tax redundancy payouts.

Until now exemption was considered part of the compensation for dismissal, sweetening the bitter pill of losing a job.

“The government has put its foot in it,” the unions complained while employers, no less critical but for other reasons, are preparing a report expressing their own thoughts.

Law firms specialising in labour issues voiced concerns and like the unions and bosses want the government to reconsider. They foresee

more conflict and more expense for employers when agreeing redundancy payments.

Finance Minister Cristobal Montoro sees it differently.

Although compensation must now be included in tax returns, there should be a minimum exemption of €2,000 for each year worked.

According to government estimates, this means that anyone entitled to a maximum payout of 33 days for every year worked and who earns less than €20,000 a year would not pay tax.

In contrast, employees entitled to 45 days per year under old agreements must pay even if they earned

less than €20,000.

Nor does the government stand to bring in much extra cash. In 2009, one of the worst years for employment, a total of 1.1 million jobs disappeared and the government lost €340 million by not taxing redundancy pay.

During the remaining crisis years, Hacienda missed out annually on less than €150 million.

If, as Montoro claims, 80 per cent of sacked employees will not be taxed on compensation, the extra €100 million is a drop in the ocean compared with the €9 billion that tax reform is going to cost Mariano Rajoy’s government overall.

Off the scale taxi fares are bad news for businesses…

I HAVE lived in Benalmadena for 10 years. I work six days a week and have one day off a week.

On my day off we often use public transport and later in the day we normally get a taxi home.

This used to cost €8 or €9 and I was shocked when I got into a taxi last week and was immediately charged €3.43 just for sitting down.

It cost €1 for the taxi to turn round and by the time the meter was up to €10, we chose to get out and walk.

By the time the taxi reached our house, it would have cost €15. Ridiculous! We have a restaurant and rely on trade by taxi. This is extortion and the government should look into it.

Taxing topic ALLAN DUHIG complained as a pensioner about tax being claimed in the UK on his private pension.

As a tax resident in Spain in the circumstances which he describes, he must make tax returns in Spain and pay tax here.

He has no choice in that. So instead of complaining that HMRC have got it wrong, he needs to put his house in order by informing HMRC that he is tax resident in Spain and on receiving the paperwork, taking it to Hacienda and registering here.

He will then be exempt from tax in the UK. Tax must be paid in the UK on government pensions (police, military, prison officers, etc) and on rental income from property in UK. All other income is taxable only in Spain Julian Ward (by email)

Brussels remedy WELL, well, what a surprise!

Now that their lucrative livelihoods are under threat all the major political parties in Europe are saying there must be change.

They wouldn’t listen until forced to by the electorate voting for fringe or singleissue protest parties.

The priorities now must be to slim down the Brussels bureaucracy and for them to get their own budget under control with transparency.

Next, certain powers should be returned to nation states, allowing self-determination.

The UK 1975 referendum for continued membership of the ‘Common Market’ was just that. It was not a vote for a federal Europe and consequent loss of sovereignty and border controls.

That was driven by the Eurocrats, irrespective of the views of the electorate. It is time to turn the clock back

Okay, the EU affects us all but that’s because Europe affects us all as we’re part of it whether we like it or not.

is bad for us, it’s hard to find anyone who can say that they have themselves suffered in person.

It’s always vague statements like Roger’s claim that “the UK is full up.” There is no real measurement or statistic to tell us if this is true, it’s only what ‘everyone says’.

If we have a lot of immigrants it’s a sign that our country is well off and secure, otherwise they would not come. It is very clear that we need more immigrants, not less, to fill the jobs that we don’t have people qualified to take.

Getting rid of the immigrants would certainly make us poor, so perhaps that would be a way of dissuading them from arriving. However, no government could do that even if it wanted to.

Hate preachers and other criminals should be put on trial and punished if they are found guilty, not deported to places where they will be tortured.

We have always to remember that both the British and European legal systems are there to ensure that trials are fair and torturefree. That is what we would expect if we were accused in a foreign country and we must allow it to foreigners in Britain.

“World Cups are uncompromising, brutal, emotional affairs that invariably end in heartbreak for all but a few. But that’s why we love them.”

So said former England striker and BBC football pundit Gary Lineker.

And he is right. As we look forward to the final we can look back at the tournament so far: Uncompromising? The tackle that ended Brazil and Barcelona star Neymar’s World Cup was certainly that. A cracked vertebrae suffered in a

heavy challenge from behind ended the tournament for one of its brightest stars.

Brutal? You need look no further than Louis Suarez. A moment of madness and a bite on an opponent and his country’s best hope was on a plane home in shame.

Heartbreak? The hopes of millions of fans have already been broken. Just two sets of fans still have the World Cup dream alive. For most the wait goes on for another four years now.

Emotional? Tears and cheers are the currency

of the World Cup. There have been plenty of both this time round at what has been one of the most entertaining tournaments ever seen.

But whatever happens for football fans everywhere, it is the most compelling tournament in the world. They will be glued to their screens for the last match to see who will be crowned the Champions of the World…

Never too soon for Christmas IT seems it is never too soon to start planning for Christmas. World-famous toy store Hamleys in London has just unveiled the top rated children’s Christmas presents for 2014. How soon do you start planning your Christmas?

Give us a break! These people forfeited all their rights as human beings when they fired the first bullet into the body of a complete stranger, purely because they were a member of a different tribe.

If I were in charge, I would lock these misled young men and women away for life. I would also seriously consider their family members. Irrespective of some of their protests to the contrary, I maintain

DURING the hottest months of the year, especially, most of the water used in gardens to maintain plants - from annuals to perennial shrubs and trees - is not in fact used by the plants.

Most is lost for a number of reasons including the following four, highlighted in the new book ‘How to use less water in your garden – A practical guide to waterwise Mediterranean style gardening worldwide’, ISBN 9781499228601.

• Water runs off to the sides across hard, sunbaked surface soil.

• Water evaporates from the surface of the soil having risen to the surface by capillary action from lower levels.

• Water drains away through open, stony soil.

• Water is sucked sideways away from the roots of plants by a spongelike action from bone dry areas of surrounding soil being watered.

One of the most effective actions to reduce the occurrence and impact of these problems is to mulch planted areas.

One of our favourite dogs is Henry the Basset hound. Sadly he has health issues and gets separation anxiety whenever his owners are getting ready to go away. Suitcases are like a red rag to poor Henry’s frail constitution. They used kennels in the past and he suffered severe separation anxiety

resulting in colitis.

Now Henry is kept at home, and unfortunately until recently his Mum has had to stay with him, effectively trapped because she couldn’t find an experienced care giver. Then she called and asked if I knew anyone.

Fortunately, we have a number of vet nurses trained and registered in the UK who are also registered in our network, many of whom are keen to travel. Job done! Now Wendy can have a holiday and Henry is cossetted by a vet nurse who cares.

FRIENDS Brian and Lynn from Mallorca sent me this wonderful picture of Hokoyo, a rare Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy, having his dinner alongside the two cats in their kitchen.

Brian said: “He couldn’t have done this a few days ago so he is learning to be tolerant of sharing the kitchen with cats and they are tolerant of being near him.”

When you have a resident pet and bring in another one, this is the time to allow them to mix without human interference. For the first week or two your resident pet will stare and maybe growl but if you walk away and leave them alone you end up with pets mixing

Often the advice is to keep a new cat in another room and not allow it to roam around the home and to change over the sleeping mats so that the cats are able to scent each other.

This works but one must be patient and it takes much time.

My daughter Sarah decided to take the hair which she had groomed from one of her resident cats and put it on the new cat and vice versa.

This way they got used to each other’s scent and within a few days the cats were all getting on well with each other.

This will also work with dogs so why not

give it a try especially if you’re introducing cats to dogs or dogs to cats.

New McLaren GT3 racer unveiled MCLAREN GT has confirmed first details of the McLaren 650S GT3 – the latest generation track-focused racer which will contest GT3 championships across the globe from the 2015 season.

Building on the highly successful 12C GT3, which has firmly re-established McLaren at the front of the GT grid over the past three seasons, the 650S GT3 was unveiled in front of fans and the global motorsport media at the recent 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

As the 12C GT3 continues claiming trophies around the world, the 650S GT3 has big shoes to fill, but it has been designed to do just that.

The menacing and purposeful-looking racer is the second-generation GT3 car from McLaren GT, the GT race car building arm of McLaren, and follows in the slipstream of the 12C GT3, now competing in its third competitive season.

To date, the 12C GT3

MENACING: The McLaren 650S GT3 will contest GT3 championships next year. has secured three championship titles, 51 race victories and 71 further podiums, a number that continues to rise on a weekly basis, and currently leads the highly competitive Blancpain Endurance Series and the GT Asia championship.

Based on the recently unveiled McLaren 650S, and built around the same lightweight carbon fibre MonoCell chassis, the GT3 iteration has been honed using CFD technology and the latest in automotive and motorsport simulation to offer enhanced aerodynamics and improved levels of cooling.

At the front, an aggressive splitter and

larger air intakes dominate the purposeful new look, incorporating the familiar McLaren ‘face’ – albeit a more aggressive and menacing version, while on the flanks, the all-new lightweight carbon fibre bodywork wraps around reprofiled air intakes, which offer further optimised cooling.

The fixed carbon-fibre rear wing works in tandem with the large carbon-fibre splitter to complete the management of air as it is worked across, through and beneath the sleek lines of the 650S GT3.

The road-going version has been designed and developed to provide ‘the ultimate in driver engagement on the road’, and the

650S GT3 uses this same approach. Revised suspension geometry, wider track and updates to the overall set-up provide enhanced levels of drivability, optimising engagement for the wide range of drivers competing in GT racing.

In addition, the updates have been made with added emphasis on

endurance racing, pulling from the lessons of the past few years, and responding to feedback from the customer teams.

Reduced cost of ownership has been a priority during the design and development of the 650S GT3, and this has been achieved through extended component life, including increased engine and gearbox rebuild intervals, together with redesigned components and systems to reduce parts costs. Body panel design and fit have also been optimised which will not only minimise pit lane repair times but also aids weight distribution through the use of lighter components.

Toyota’s green car of the future?

TOYOTA has revealed the exterior design and Japan pricing of its hydrogen Fuel Cell Sedan, first unveiled as a concept at the Tokyo Motor Show last year.

The car will launch in Japan before April 2015, and preparations are under way for launches in the US and European markets in the summer of 2015.

In Japan, the Fuel Cell Sedan will go on sale at Toyota and Toyopet dealerships, priced at approximately seven million yen (€50,460). Initially, sales will be limited to regions where hydrogen refuelling infrastructure is being developed. European and US prices have not yet been decided.

Fuel cell vehicles contribute to the diversification of automobile fuels, emit no CO2 or environmentally harmful substances during operation, and offer the convenience of gasoline-powered cars.

Last year’s winner Chris Froome is hoping to retain his title and was going well the last time I saw him on his bike (he was lying second) but unfortunately Mark Cavendish wasn’t... he crashed out!

Interesting scoring for GINS

GINS played a Scratch Better Ball Match Play competition at Los Moriscos.

When players got their heads round the scoring system they enjoyed the challenge. Everyone played off scratch and with each four ball having similar handicaps it became nip and tuck and in many cases down to the last putt on the 18th. Rita’s team took the honours.

At Añoreta the best field for a while played in the individual Stableford competition. Winner of the men’s division was Malcolm Jones (36 points), second was Peter Garner (34) and third was Dietmar Stec (30).

Top lady was Judy Howard (32) with Ingrid Stec (27) second.

Frank Ferdinales (16) had the best front nine and Sean Daly (15) the best back nine.

Malcolm Jones and Dietmar Stec scored two’s.

At Baviera the Stableford scoring was pretty good, with four 32 pointers vying for third place, with Russell Dick prevailing on count back from George Reid and Robert Durston Baviera resident Jon Rose took a clear second with 33 points with Ray Tomlinson storming to victory with 35 points.
