Princess Cristina faces court trial A SPANISH court decided on Wednesday to hear corruption charges against Princess Cristina, sister of King Felipe VI. The ruling by a Palma de Mallorca court comes almost a week after King Juan Carlos, who sat for nearly 40 years on Spain’s throne, abdicated in favour of his son, 46.

As reported by court sources, it formalised money laundering and tax fraud charges against Cristina de Borbon.

The Princess found herself caught up in a police investigation on her husband’s Iñaki Urdangarin’s business dealings. The 46-year-old is the Duke of Palma de Mallorca and a former handball player.

Daily TV AFTERMATH OF SANT JOAN: Beaches now restored to normal.

Beach clean up

PALMA Council laid on an extra 40 beach cleaners to clear up the aftermath of the ‘Nit de Sant Joan’ (summer solstice celebrations) when Mallorca’s residents and visitors alike go to the beach to observe the traditional bonfires and all night partying associated with June 22.

This year the partygoers have been more ecological and only left six tons of rubbish on the beaches - that is a 30 per cent reduction compared to last year.

The usual items left behind after this celebration are bottles and food containers

as well as the leftovers from the bonfires including logs and charcoal which has to be removed from the beach before it stains the sand.

The team which takes to the beaches is composed of seven mechanical sweepers, three tanker trucks and a ‘residue cleanup’ truck as well as 80 extra rubbish containers and all the extra staff.

The clean-up operation started at around 2am and went on until 8am at which point all the beaches had been restored to their usual appearance.

Tragic death investigated MALLORCA is thinking of banning party boats.

Just one day after the tragic death of a tourist on a party boat, Serra, the president of the Consell d’Eivissa (local government) suggested banning all such activities in Mallorca.

In a meeting with all the mayors of the islands Serra explained that originally they had

just wanted to regulate the party boat industry in order to make it safer, but in the light of recent events it may be better to ban the activity altogether.

Despite the strong words against the industry the president did say that first they would have to find out the exact circumstances which led to the death of the tourist and how the situation

came about. He added that they would have to wait for the autopsy, the Guardia Civil report and a study on the security of the boat in question.

Serra finished his speech reminding those present that Mallorca was a 100 per cent tourist island and, as such, they could not afford to have this sort of scandal hanging over them.

No crime THE public prosecutor’s office has found no irregularities in the financing of Camps’ trips, concluding that they were all legitimate business expenses.

Finance cuts THE financial reform suggested by Montoro, minister for Inland Revenue, may negatively affect the Balearic Islands according to the Mes party who are calling for the reforms to be reformed.

First immigrant craft to arrive since 2012 THE Guardia Civil have located a dinghy, made of fibreglass and only five metres long, in Cabrera with 11 people on board.

All 11 immigrants on board were in “good condition� according to Teresa Palmer, regional government delegate.

At a press meeting the delegate said that they were able to detect the dinghy thanks to a strategically placed camera, which is part of the Integrated System of Exterior Vigilance (SIVE), located on the northern part of the island that looks towards Africa.

Petty crime moved on elsewhere THE police presence in Palma and Calvia has displaced the petty crime in the area but the delinquents say that they will just move elsewhere.

“If they won’t let us work in Palma or Calvia then we will just have to go and rob somewhere else - we have to feed our children and the state does not help us,” commented one woman about the change in the situation.

The women in the area are mainly of gypsy origin and they earn a living by picking pockets, selling carnations or just plain shoplifting.

They say that the police presence makes it difficult for them in the centre of Palma and, as such, they will move to another area but will not give up their way of life.

This police push to clean up the centres where there are more tourists happens every year and every year the same thing happens: petty crime just moves to another area where it is easier for the women to ply their ‘trade.’

Mayor cutting public spending

MARRATXI COUNCIL: Met to pass a resolution cutting the mayor’s salary by 15 per cent.

MAYOR of Marratxi Tomeu Oliver has had his salary slashed by 15 per cent and it was his own idea.

He had made a formal request asking that his salary be reduced, and a meeting of the town hall agreed.

As stated by council sources, he will make €6,000 less during his last year in office.

He will earn €52,250 in 14 instalments.

In addition, the proposal

suggests modifying the mayor’s full time work schedule to ‘35 hours and 22 minutes a week, five per cent less than up until now.’

However, Oliver said talking to the media that his salary reduction will not affect his responsibilities before the council.

On the contrary, he made it clear that he will remain as committed as ever and that he will “continue working with

the same dedication as before. Numbers are just numbers. I will always give 100 per cent,” he added.

His term in office has been characterised by a

reduction in public spending. In fact, it is estimated that since he assumed office Oliver and his team have saved €1.2 million.

Bicycle parking now available in Palma THE Palma Municipal Parking and Projects Society (SMAP) has announced that there are 13 parking spaces available for bicycles in the municipal parking lots.

The spaces will cost between €4.85 and €10.23 per month depending on where the parking lot is. This service has been available since 2003 and is part of the council’s initiative to get more residents to use bicycles to get around the city by offering them more safety against theft which is rife in the centre.

The spaces available are in Marques de la Cenia, Santa Pagesa, and Parc de Sa Riera and anyone interested in acquiring one can apply to the council.

Squatter floods building A FUGITIVE from justice has flooded the building he squats in by trying to steal water from the mains pipe.

The building, in Son Gotleu, was overrun by water after the squatter had ‘tricked’ the tap which allows the mains water into the building.

All of the residents of the building had to leave until the situation was brought under control.

This is not the first time this sort of thing has happened in Son Gotleu - in fact it is a regular occurrence.

Gines Quiñonero, president of the neighbours’ association said: “There are around 200 immigrant flats being occupied in the area and all of them hook up to the water supply and they also remove any fuses so that they can hook up to the electrical supply.

“The neighbours live in terror of these occupants as they frequently threaten us.”

She went on to comment: “The National Police raided the building not long ago but it made no difference as the flats were just re-occupied the next day.”

The neighbours' association is now going to make a formal complaint to the police and, if necessary, start legal proceedings to have the squatters removed.

Thousands protest against oil prospecting THOUSANDS of people took to the streets of Palma on Saturday to protest against the government’s approval of oil prospecting around the Balearic Islands.

The demonstrations were

organised in both the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands by ecological organisations under the slogan ‘Canary Islands - one voice against the prospecting.’

Residents of both groups of islands united against Repsol, the company in charge of the prospecting, and their actions to try to find oil or gas on the islands.

The ecological organisa-

tions are asking for the report on the impact to the islands to be withdrawn and for another to be done with an eye to the environmental impact that any prospecting might have on the areas in

question.

They are claiming that certain parts of the report have been falsified to make the impact look less when, in fact, a small spill could destroy the ecosystem.

Strike wreaks havoc THE French air traffic controllers’ decision to go on strike caused cancellations and delays in Balearic airports.

Air carriers were forced to cancel five out of the 21 scheduled flights departing to or arriving at Son Sant Joan from French airports, as well as another 31 flying to Germany and the UK. In addition, most of the 682 flights scheduled for June 23 were delayed as a direct result of the strike.

French traffic controllers are against an initiative presented by the European

Decent quality water now!

THE town of Portocolom is fed up with its drinking water situation.

“We are tired and we can’t wait any longer, all the neighbours have had a lot of patience.”

With this declaration the neighbours of Portocolom proposed a demonstration in the port of Felanitx on July 26 to end the “eternal wait” for decent quality drinking water.

With the population of

the area about to increase three fold for the summer the residents have decided to take to the streets and ask for “good water now.”

One person commented that they have been waiting for years and the promises keep coming but not the water quality.

The neighbours now face another summer with tap water that is of a lower quality than the rest of the island.

During the demonstration the neighbours will all carry an empty water bottle so that they can fill it up with decent quality water to make their point.

The council of Potrocolom has decided to raise the water taxes in order to be able to pay for the project of cleaning up the supply.

There is a budget of €2.1 million for the project.

THE Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports has limited the amount that a family can receive for sending their child to a private school, which teaches in Spanish, to the same cost as sending the child to public school.

Islands teach in Catalan.

This figure has been fixed at a cost of €6,057 per year.

Families can only ask for this grant if there is no Spanish speaking school near enough for them to send their children.

Road crash in Palma TWO youths were injured when their car crashed into the central reservation at the entrance to the motorway on the road between Es Pillari and Palma.

The two men, 33 and 29, suffered severe bruising and abrasions but were able to get out of the car without assistance .

The two were taken to the Son Llatzer hospital and are expected to recover.

The accident happened around 4:15am, the cause is unknown but the driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Gardener who killed with sword gets long sentence A GARDENER who killed his work colleague with a sword has accepted a prison sentence of 17.5 years.

The gardener was accused of killing his

work partner with a sword and several knives after being fired from a finca in the Bunyola area of Mallorca in 2013. He later admitted his guilt and

accepted the jail sentence.

The prosecution defended the heavy sentence on the basis that they believed it was proven that the man

killed with malice and forethought - that he wanted revenge for having been fired.

The accused, 47, has never denied the facts and even apologised to the police who arrested him and sent a letter to the family of the victim to explain his actions and to ask their forgiveness.

The gardener had worked at the finca Ca Na Paloni since 2011 and considered the victim, 54, to be responsible for his losing his job.

Four police jailed for torture FOUR Guardia Civil officers have been jailed for torturing two British tourists in Palma.

The officers, who were found guilty by a Palma court, have been sentenced

to terms of between two and four years imprisonment.

The events took place in 2009, in Santa Ponsa, when two British men were having a fight and one of

them hit a Guardia Civil sergeant. Both men were detained and taken to the police station where they were beaten by the accused all night and most of the next day. The Guardia Civil even used objects like truncheons to beat them.

Neither of the victims appeared in the court to take part in the prosecution and, as such, the exact circumstances of the beatings are unknown. The prosecution considered that the medical reports on the victims were enough to prove the case.

Security up THE Ministry of the Interior announced 460 National Police and Guardia Civil officers will reinforce security on the Balearic Islands during the summer.

The sergeant has been sentenced to four years in prison and a life-long ban from public service employment. He will also have to pay a fine of

â‚Ź2,455. The other three officers were given two years in prison each and banned from public service employment for eight years.

Woman raped in broad daylight A WOMAN has been raped in Campos in broad daylight.

Guardia Civil officers placed a 50-yearold Moroccan national under arrest on sexual assault charges.

The suspect allegedly attacked his victim, 20, after she had left work. Police investigators are currently trying to determine whether the man knew the

young Moroccan woman.

He allegedly followed her to an empty street, where he threw her to the ground, beat her up and raped her.

The victim started screaming and alerted the neighbours.

The police later arrested the man who was immediately identified by the victim.

The woman was taken to a local hospital.

Woman injured after colliding with horse A WOMAN, 66, was run over by a horse and seriously injured during a beach race.

She was injured at the summer solstice party in Ciutadella and is in a very serious medical condition.

She was evacuated by helicopter to the hospital in Son Espases, Palma.

She is said to be suffering from multiple bruises and head injuries after being run over by a horse during the Jocs de Pla festivities in which there is a horse race along the beach to celebrate the night of Sant Joan.

The woman took the brunt of the collision The accident happened at the end of the beach near the port at around 10pm when the jockey was galloping along the beach and ran into a youth who was standing too near to the race course.

This upset the horse which then fell onto the couple from Catalu単a.

The woman took the brunt of the collision and was left unconscious and could not be taken to hospital until she was stabilised at the scene of the accident.

Her friend, a man of 67, has a broken leg as a result of the horse falling on them. He was in a stable condition and was taken immediately to the hospital in Mahon.

The jockey is also in the Mahon hospital and is said to be doing well and recovering from light head injuries.

Due to the severity of this accident, this year, the racing was halted.

Video rapist caught on film POLICE in Palma have arrested a man on suspicion of drugging and raping a prostitute and videoing himself while in the process.

The man had contacted the prostitute on several occasions but had never been aggressive with her.

A police spokesperson

has confirmed that the man had behaved normally the first time he availed himself of the woman’s services, but the second time he saw her, his behaviour ‘changed radically’ and when they got to an abandoned piece of land in Llucmajor he started to shout at her and hit her.

At that moment he took out a video camera and started filming her saying they were going to make a porno film together - he then forced her to have very aggressive sex.

After the aggression the woman only remembers feeling very ill and going to the hospital in Son Llatzer -

she told hospital staff what had happened and they called the police.

After a few days of investigation the police were able to locate the man thanks to the description given by the victim. She identified him as soon as she saw him, leaving no doubt that it

Lily struts her stuff in Mallorca

By Vicki McLeod LILY ALLEN, was welcomed onstage by a rapturous crowd of fans who didn’t stop dancing for the full hour plus that she was performing. She’s one of Britain’s most provocative pop stars but she certainly didn’t ruffle my feathers this Tuesday night at Mallorca Rocks.

One of Lily’s most charming attributes is her ability to sing with the voice of a little girl but deliver song lines which pack a punch and make a point and her most recent hits from her new album Sheezus are some of her hardest hitting ones. I particularly enjoyed her rendition of one of her singles from ‘It’s not me, it’s you’ dedicated to bosses everywhere, if you were there then you’ll know why I can’t write the title of the song in these hallowed pages.

Although Lily was joined onstage by a full band and dancers it was the more intimate moments with the crowd that I enjoyed the most. Missed it? You missed

SEA ANEMONES: Have to be over a certain size.

Strange catch seized from illegal fishers THE Guardia Civil have confiscated more than 130 kilos of anemones which were illegally caught off the beaches of Benalmadena, Malaga; the majority of which were too small according to law.

A total of 131 kilos of anemones were found in seven panniers in the back of two cars being used to transport the sea creatures.

The four illegal fishermen who caught the creatures have been detained for offences against the law of maritime fishing and aquaculture.

Investigations began in May when the nature protection branch of the Guardia Civil determined the MO of the gang which would come to Benalmadena from Cadiz to capture the immature anemones.

Inquiries revealed that three of the fishermen would go diving for the creatures while one of them would remain on the beach to keep a lookout for police.

Having caught seven panniers full of the anemones, the illegal fishermen would then take them back to Cadiz in the back of their cars.

The Guardia Civil stopped the cars and discovered that around 50 per cent of the catch was too small for commercial purposes and, as such, in violation of the law.

Police confiscated all the equipment used in the illegal capture of the

creatures including the diving tanks and both cars.

The investigation has

now been closed as the police consider that all those responsible have been caught.

T has been a disastrous time for lovers of football in England and Spain.

Both teams from those soccer crazy nations have had to beat a gloomy retreat after being knocked out early.

So all the hopes and dreams of some of the best and most loyal fans in the world have been broken all too soon. It is a tremendous disappointment for many with all the excitement that comes with the knockout stages destined for other teams.

For the Spanish it is the end of an era after eight years of dazzling success.

Two European Championships and a World Cup is not a bad haul for largely the same group of players. But father time has caught

up with them and root and branch rebuilding is now needed.

For England the long wait for glory goes on. But they are already further along the rebuilding road than Spain with some exciting young talent blooded in this tournament.

Whatever the future holds one thing is for sure - football is one thing that England and Spain have in common. It is a shame that the opportunity for fans from both those countries to watch each other’s teams and share some banter over a beer and tapa has gone.

But on the up side for football lovers, the teams left have been playing some beautiful stuff. It bodes well for one of the best tournaments in recent years.

THE price of petrol and diesel went up by 0.37 per cent in just a week and is approaching a yearly high.

By the end of last week petrol cost an average €1.427 and diesel €1.320, almost equalling the previous high in September of last year.

It has now been nine weeks that petrol has cost over the €1.4 mark

according to an EU petrol report.

This means that filling the average petrol tank, 55 litres, now costs €78.48 and the average diesel tank, also 55 litres, now costs €72.6, which is €0.32 more than last week.

As a reference, a barrel of crude Brent oil costs $114.3 while the Texas sweet light costs $106.22.

Spain exports wine tech to Napa Valley THE vineyards of Cataluña are exporting their expertise in irrigation systems to the valleys of the Napa region in California.

Cataluña’s councillor for Agriculture, Josep Maria Pelegri, has been visiting the American wine region and in particular the area where Codorniu’s techniques are being used.

Pelegri is visiting the area to reinforce the internationalisation of Cataluña’s industry and technologies and he was accompanied on his visit

by Xavier Farre, a representative of Codorniu.

Codorniu and the Institute for Agricultural Technology (IRTA) have been working together since 2001 on a project to

Botin sticks up for Bank of Spain EMILIO BOTIN, president of Santander Bank, defended Bank of Spain’s role during the crisis.

Earlier, the outgoing president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, had heaped responsibility for Spain’s problems on the Bank of Spain.

“Whenever the European Commission asked the Spanish authorities how were the banks and how were the savings banks they always said that everything was perfect,” Durao Barroso complained.

“I don’t agree with the president’s declarations,” Botin replied.

The supervisor had tried to anticipate the crisis with innovative measures, he insisted.

These included the anticyclic provisions required of Spanish banks during the bonanza years, that were designed to help them survive in leaner times.

No gas crisis for Spain SPAIN is sitting pretty regarding its gas supply.

Russia might have reduced Ukraine’s supply, alleging nonpayment, and depleting the supplies of other clients whose gas has to pass through the region. But unlike Estonia, Finland, Letonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovakia whose entire supply comes through Ukraine, Spain’s gas comes from various sources, explained the Asociacion Española del Gas (Sedigas).

Last year it imported gas from 11 countries and also has six international pipeline connections.

Two connect directly with Algeria, two with Portugal and another two with France. Fiftyfour per cent of Spain’s natural gas arrives via pipeline, principally from Algeria.

The remaining 46 per cent is liquefied natural gas (LNG) imported in methane tankers that unload at one of Spain’s six functioning regasification plants.

Here the LNG is then heated to turn it back into gas before it is piped to users. Spain currently accounts for 36.5 per cent of

Europe’s regasification capacity, with plants in Sagunto (Valencia) Huelva, Cartagena (Murcia), Barcelona, Bilbao and Mugardos (La Coruña). There is another plant, at present unused, in El Musel (Asturias).

“Spain even could send gas

onward to other countries,” Sedigas has revealed.

The present infrastructure is sufficient to circulate 5.4 billion cubic metres of gas, but the Irun pipeline in the north of Spain will increase this to 7.1 billion cubic metres.

Less money and more margarine SPANISH families spent an average €27,098 last year, 3.7 per cent less than in 2012.

There were more eggs and margarine on the daily menu and sales of loose tobacco increased as many smokers started rolling their own.

Children received 21 per cent less pocket money from their parents.

Holidays, eating out, cinema visits and tickets for cultural events were all reined in last year although outlay on gas, electricity and water bills increased because of higher tariffs.

There was also more to pay at the chemists owing to co-payment for medication and families spent more on education.

Amongst other things this was due to the steep rise in university students’ annual registration fees.

Grants for textbooks,

school transport and lunches were also harder to come by.

An official Family Budget Survey by Spain’s Institute of National Statistics (INE) demonstrates that despite the recent improvement to the national economy the results of this progress have yet to filter through to families.

Spending fell by 14.5 per cent between 2008 and 2013 and last year’s €27,098 family average is lowest of the crisis years.

Families spent 30 per cent less on shoes, clothes and items for the home during these five years while spending on sewing materials and shoe repairs rose as people literally make do and mend.

The survey also asked participating families for details of their spending on drugs and prostitution.

be a bonus based on turnover or profits.

Everyone likes familiarity so why not delegate key members of the staff to waiting upon regulars.

Never take employees for granted, involve them as you would if they were partners

or shareholders. In fact, good staff are more important than investors.

By the same token it should be pointed out to employees that you encourage clients to report their experience as a customer. By doing so, everyone who uses your business becomes a shareholder.

Encourage employees to suggest ways by which their business, which you think of as your business, can be improved. Doing so involves them.

They feel your business is as important to them as it is to you.

A key element is to find ways to recognise not just individual but team performance. Again, this can be in the form of a bonus, financial reward, time off in lieu or restaurant vouchers.

By doing things this way your staff will be as keen as you are to stamp down on the dumb insolent.

Shedding light on last year’s electricity scandal SPAIN’S Markets and Monopolies regulatory body (CNMC) is investigating Iberdrola for possible price manipulation.

The CNMC could not reveal the period in question, sources said, as this was an ongoing case.

Neither should opening the investigation be allowed to pre-judge the energy company, they added. If Iberdrola is found to have been involved in ‘fraudulent price manipulation’ the multinational could be fined between €6 million and €60 million under Spain’s Electricity Sector laws.

The Spanish Parliament cannot help as we are under the autonomous rule of Andalucia, and have no fear they have been contacted too.

My main reason for writing letters is so that everyone knows about the situation, the stress and heartache that this causes, as well as the financial burden of fighting your case.

You buy a house with all the correct paperwork, receive your deeds, heave a huge sigh of relief and then find out that you are not legal at all.

Plain language I FULLY agree that a European prime minister should speak at least one other language.

Given the cosmopolitan ambitions of any UK government I assume David Cameron has a working knowledge of both German and Russian?

For Bill to say that the effects of the EU are negligible is absurd.

The UK is full up, yet we have net migration of 212,000 a year. We cannot deport foreign murderers, rapists, paedophiles and hate preachers because it would deny them their “Yuman Rights”!

Where to go?

I AM allergic to a lot of medication and therefore have much I need to dispose of.

I know this can be left at a chemist or any health centre but I would like to know what happens to this unused medication.

Is it passed on to the poor or sent to third world countries? The

same applies to spectacles. Do opticians collect them to be sent to needy people?

If there is anyone who knows whether these things are passed on to be used for the good of others I should be most grateful.

Much of my unused medication is quite costly and I hate to think of it being dumped whilst many people are dying because it is unobtainable in their country.

Closed season MY wife and I drove all the way from Alhaurin to La Cañada, Marbella, specifically to do a spot of shopping.

We were disappointed to find the whole complex closed! Another of those annoying local holidays it seems.

We weren’t the only ones to be caught out: there were dozens of other folk with shopping funds burning a hole in their pockets.

Scam alert GAS men arrived at my villa and I understood I had to have my gas checked out by law. As they seemed to have all the correct paperwork I allowed them in.

They immediately removed all four of my gas regulators (two of them were only two years old).

They then removed all the hoses and pipe fittings which they soldered back on, and also used copper piping from an old boiler in my garage to run another valve that I was told I needed.

I then spoke to my next door neighbour and after being told this was a scam I confronted the six people who got very agitated.

Unfortunately I had already paid them €485.13 and they would not refund any of the cash.

I called the Guardia but when they arrived they said these people were legal and left.

I took photos of their two vehicles and have circulated the registration numbers on Facebook to hopefully warn any other unwary people. I have since had a gas leak that I found in my garage fixed independently.

Fighting back I READ with interest Mary Goosey’s problems with cancelling her telephone contract.

I sympathise as I have had a similar problem with my car insurance since moving from France to Spain. Despite sending several letters by registered mail to the company and the agent, cancelling my health, house and car insurances, it wasn’t until December they got the message.

However they have continued to demand payment for insurance on one of my cars with the threat of bailiffs for non-payment.

Unfortunately it is like hitting your head against a brick wall and no one seems to respond personally to the countless letters and emails I have sent.

If it’s any consolation to Mary, I am now put off buying a phone package.

Good luck Mary and don’t be intimidated by these companies!

DIAMOND encrusted baby dummies and feeding bottles are now on sale costing tens of thousands of euros. Is that a waste and symbolic that today’s children are being spoilt? Do youngsters get given too much too soon or would it be better if they were made to work for their pocket money?

A “Completely Different World” As Europe Introduces Negative Interest Rates In the UK, speculation is growing about how soon interest rates will rise.

Here in Europe, the European Central Bank (ECB) has made a historic move in the opposite direction and introduced negative interest rates.

At its June meeting, the ECB unanimously voted to cut its deposit interest rate from 0% to -0.1% - the first time a main central bank moved interest rates into negative territory.

This was part of a package to boost economic growth and add more liquidity to the markets. The main interest rate was also cut from 0.25% to 0.15% (effectively zero) and €400 billion of cheap loans announced for Eurozone banks to boost lending.

ECB President, Mario Draghi, told reporters “Now we are in a completely different world” and said they will act swiftly with further monetary policy easing if required.

Negative interest rate Commercial banks keep funds with their central bank for safe keeping.

Normally deposits above the reserves they are required to keep earn interest at the deposit interest rate set by the central bank.

However, from 11th June, European banks are being charged 0.1% to park money with the ECB. The idea is that since it is now costly to leave money there, commercial banks will opt to lend the money instead. This would give

consumers and businesses more spending power, helping spur economic growth and boost confidence. The ECB hopes it will lift inflation, therefore avoiding deflation, while encouraging lending in the weaker peripheral states.

Another benefit is that the measure could weaken the Euro.

Negative interest rates could make it less attractive for foreign investors to park money in the Eurozone, causing the single currency to fall.

This would help Eurozone exporters compete internationally and make imports more expensive, increasing demand for local producers.

Denmark tried this tactic in 2012.

The negative interest rate did lower the value of the Krone, though the Danish Banking Association said it hit profits.

This negative interest rate is separate from the main financing rate used to set the interest rates banks offer their customers - though

that is now a paltry 0.15%.

Nonetheless, your interest rate may still be affected. Banks could pass on the costs to their customers to reduce the effect it has on their profitability. While they may not explicitly charge you a negative rate, they could pay no interest at all and/or charge a fee for maintaining your account.

Mr Draghi showed willingness to take further action if necessary and opened the door for quantitative easing, where the bank buys assets.

Markets broadly welcomed the news. Shares in the FTSE Eurofirst 300 rose 4%, almost reaching a sixyear closing high. Germany’s Xetra Dax 30 breached 10,000 points for the first time.

These initiatives and comments show that Mr Draghi and the ECB are prepared to take aggressive action to achieve their objectives.

This will also boost confidence and markets responded well.

Negative interest rates have not

been tried and tested on this scale.

It is an attractive theory, but it will be some time before we see how it worked in practice.

If you have large deposits in a European bank, consider whether your bank is offering you unrewarded risk. The risk of institutional failure is one we should not ignore, and if your interest rates are low you are exposed to the risk while receiving none of the reward. You should consider the risk/return characteristics of cash the same as you would with other assets. You need a clear and objective assessment of your attitude to risk to establish the savings and investment strategy that suits you best, and should take professional guidance on this.

A descent to hell…

T HE only thing going to stop young Muslim extremists from joining groups of murdering Jihadists is for their ‘religious’ leaders to cease convincing them they will enter the realms of paradise as a reward for their efforts.

If they could only be taught that their crimes against humanity would put them on an inescapable spiral in the opposite direction you can bet their enlistments to these extremists’ organisations would fall to just about zero.

But they won’t will they? Irrespective of whether these leaders fall into the ‘hate preacher’ category or not, I have never heard of one so called ‘moderate’ come out and put forward an alternate theory. The reason for this of course is that whatever their religious ideals, they all believe this Shangri-La hereafter ‘reward’ actually does exist.

This of course, is the whole fundamental difference between decent caring Christians and the extremism of Islam. Christians believe that the more peaceful and blame free life you lead, the more chance you have of entering paradise, unfortunately these zealots believe exactly the opposite.

Devout Christians truly do believe someone did actually return from the dead and teach them this was indeed the case. (Personally I retain an open mind!) All the Muslim world has is their flesh and blood leaders, who have no

proof whatsoever their theories are correct. I find that all a bit sad. Such a waste of young lives to be told they must maim, kill and die horrible deaths to achieve happiness.

No, it is the religious leaders who have all this misery, maiming and destruction on their consciences. Odd that you don’t see many of them in the front line or strapped up to suicide bombs; does this mean they don’t actually want to finish up in Shangri La? Mmm. Do I detect the whiff of hypocrisy?

Well the little darlings are now on their THREE MONTH vacation. I’m watching two of mine lying on the couch. They have now been there over a half an hour and have so far not spoken a word to each other! I’ll tell you one thing mobiles have brought us, lots of blessed peace and quiet. Be thankful for small mercies.

I see police are now preparing a claim that Leonard Rossiter was in a gang of sex attackers working on the set of a BBC drama in 1968. Rossiter of course died in 1984. As much as I sympathise with these young ladies

who had their bums touched 45 years ago, don’t we think it’s time to call down the statute of limitations and save the taxpayer and authorities considerable time and money by moving on and getting a life?

AM not a huge fan of football, but with the World Cup well-under way there is no avoiding the drama, joy and disappointment that come with each game (very loudly through neighbouring walls, but live and let live, I guess the motto goes).

I have often wondered what is so powerful about the ‘beautiful game’ that in many households seems to have replaced religion as a sole point of unity.

Emile Durkheim, the French philosopher and sociologist, believed that belonging to a group, with shared values and beliefs, was critical to a wellfunctioning society, without a solid group system in place, a country would erode

and fail. He also said that not belonging to such a group, on a personal level, would lead to isolation (unsurprisingly) and possibly suicidal tendencies.

In the past, the church has been the fabric holding society together, but with religion losing its stronghold, people need to look elsewhere for their groups, and in our increasingly multicultural world, even nationality is disintegrating as a group. Arguably, it is also too wide and divergent a group to bring the full benefits.

Other philosophers have long since recognised the fundamental need to belong to a group - it appears prominently in Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and even Freud highlighted the need for personal contact.

An extended family fulfils this purpose for many, but in modern times, we are often living far away from relatives and friends - especially as expats, where we typically have to board

a plane to ‘belong.’

Cue football. A perfect focal-point for our need to belong. Emotions run high, there is paraphernalia to buy and clothing to wear which demonstrates your commitment to your group. It is generally affordable and all-inclusive. Welcome to pray at the altar of the Football Stadium.

If you are unlikely to launch yourself into a scrum hug upon each goal scored by your team, then perhaps it might be worth making sure that you find another engaging group to belong to. According to social psychologists Roy Baumeister and Mark Leary, “a lack of belongingness should constitute severe deprivation and cause a variety of ill effects,” which to me suggests that right now is as good a time to get your group of friends around for some wine and and old-fashioned, face-toface chit chat. An area in which the illustrious Facebook falls short regardless of how many cyber ‘friends’ you have.

Or throw caution to the wind and launch yourself in to the beautiful game.

COPROPHAGIA, to give the proper name to the condition where dogs eat faeces, is a natural form of behaviour which most dogs learn from puppyhood when their mother will clean up after them.

It happens more in puppies which come from rescue kennels and pet shops. It can also be started by poor house-training where owners do not clean up after the pup.

Boredom is another cause.

Dogs that spend long periods alone in the garden or in kennels can develop this habit. In kennels, dogs will copy other dogs doing it.

Don’t rub a dog’s nose in its excrement. This only teaches dogs to eat the evidence to avoid

punishment. Don’t shout or chase the dog away. It will only learn to eat faster. Do remove the faeces, especially if you live in a warm climate, for they encourage mosquitoes.

You can also treat faeces with Tabasco or peppers. The dog will not find that taste very rewarding.

It could be the dog is just hungry.

Split the daily food ration into several portions and feed the dog three or four times a day with a higher fibre content. Alternatively, the dog could have a health problem.

There is a condition called Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency, where a lack of

enzymes in the pancreas will result in dogs being ravenously hungry.

Dogs suffering from this will eat anything. Although the eating of faeces is absolutely repellent to humans, the smell and texture is attractive to dogs.

Dogs have a different palate to our own. If all else fails, only allow the dog off lead with a muzzle.

Taste is not such an important sense to dogs, despite claims to the contrary.

Euro holds steady against sterling Commentary by Moneycorp

EUR The euro escaped the wrath of investors for almost the first time in more than a month, holding steady against sterling and actually strengthening by a third of a cent against the US and Australian dollars.

Investors were distracted by falling UK inflation and by predictions of near-zero US interest rates for a protracted period so they left the euro alone and it was able to continue its defence of the psychological floor at £0.80.

USD It was not a good week for the dollar, which lost a cent to sterling and fell by nearly that much against the euro. The US

economic data were there or thereabouts, with inflation ticking up to 2.1 per cent, but the Federal Reserve spoiled the dollar’s game. The Fed made it clear that interest rates will be staying close to zero “for a considerable time”, possibly even until 2016. Investors were disappointed and they sold the dollar.

CAD A typically thin week for Canadian economic data provided investors with almost no guidance. Manufacturing shipments were slightly down in April, wholesale sales achieved a worthwhile 1.2 per cent increase and there was a net inflow of international investment.

It cost the Aussie a cent against the US dollar and the pound.

NZD Investors could find no controversy among the few NZ economic statistics and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand said nothing to provoke them.

Consumer confidence in June was roughly unchanged from three months earlier and the REINZ house price index was down by -1.2 per cent in May. The most important numbers were for gross domestic product, which expanded by 1.0 per cent in the first quarter. The Kiwi strengthened by half a US cent and was almost unchanged against sterling.

IF you wanted any kind of proof that I needed my head examining I think that last Saturday should do it.

In the morning (under a ferocious sun) I and my fellow Whole Life Challengers at the Country Club in Santa Ponsa got together for a bit of a laugh.

Now this would normally mean a couple of beers and a pizza, but not if you are in Challenge land where both of these things are completely forbidden for eight weeks whilst you try to make some dramatic ‘Whole Life’ changes to yourself

No, instead of a lovely snack, we all competed against each other to see who was the fittest. (It’s okay, I didn’t win, there’s

no shock ending to this column!). Congratulations must go to the overall winner for the girls Viviana, our fantastic coach Lidia and everyone else for their amazing efforts: running, sit ups, press ups, rowing, burpees, push ups and the rest, it was a tough competition and very impressive to watch (and in my case, photograph as well).

Our challenge comes to an end on Saturday, the next one will start in September, and I can’t wait. Given that I have got a long way to go from the desk jockey I was two months ago, I am determined to keep training and working until I can give some of these people a good run for their money.

Then in the afternoon I rushed home and made four fancy dress costumes for ‘El Brutatlo’ in Andratx.

The what? The Brutatlo is a fancy dress obstacle course over six kilometres which has been held in Andratx for the past three years.

You have to haul yourself in and out of skips filled with water (collecting some incredible bruises along the way), crawl along the

ground under wires, leap into muddy puddles, slide down the sides of banks, fumble blindly (I assume it wasn’t just me that had a contact lens fail at this point), through baths of foam and still smile for the camera.

(Thanks to Pau Verd for the photos, if you want to see more then check out www.familymattersmallorc a.com). After the race there was a BBQ for everyone and a big cheque was given to a local Multiple Sclerosis group.

Of course, we came a respectable almost last, beaten apparently by our fellow expats who ran as a Scottish team, but boy we had a great time. My fellow Brutatloers Anthea, Julian and my husband Oliver were very noble and patient with the slowest member of their team, i.e. me. But as Lidia had said to me in the morning, the person who is last is the one on the sofa.

Bearing that in mind, the next day I got off my bruised behind and went to the beach for a swim.

I obviously haven’t quite toughened up enough yet as I got up to my ankles and wimped out. Ah well.

Five innovative ways to eat a watermelon THERE is no fruit more appropriate for summer than the humble watermelon - it’s juicy and light and just shouts summer!

Straight from the rind is not the only way to enjoy this summer staple - here are a few suggestions on how to jazz it up a little.

Watermelon pizza.

Just slice the melon like a pizza and then top it with a strong cheese like feta or cured manchego, add a little fresh basil and you’re ready to go.

Watermelon slushy. A lot of the slushies available out there are loaded with frightening amounts of sugar so why not just take the rind off the watermelon and throw it into the liquidiser for a minute with some ice, and possibly a little squirt of lemon juice, and you have the perfect summer refresher.

Honey grilled watermelon salad. Next time you have a barbecue cut some watermelon into large cubes, smother in honey

WATERMELON SLUSHY: The healthy alternative. and throw onto the grill.

Now mix some tomato, cucumber and lettuce in with the roasted watermelon and dress to taste; it makes the perfect side dish for meats.

Summer watermelon salad. Cut the watermelon into cubes as before and add to a mix of avocado, feta, radish, red onion, mint and

chives - this makes an unusual, flavour-packed summer salad.

Watermelon ice cubes.

A great way to cool down your drink whatever it may be, this goes well with soft drinks and even wine, just make watermelon balls and put them into the freezer for a few hours and plop them into your drink.

Round Spain on a plate: Zaragoza ZARAGOZA is the capital city of Aragon, in the north east of Spain, and has a wide variety of traditional gastronomy revolving around saffron and meat, rather than fish, due to its being inland.

Nobody can visit the area without trying their most typical dish: the Chilindron which consists of a sauce made with a variety of vegetables, tomatoes, peppers and a lot of garlic, traditionally served over braised lamb but chicken is also a popular alternative.

Cordero a la pastora (shepherd’s lamb) is a popular dish in the area, which is braised lamb served in its own juices with boiled or roast potatoes.

The only traditional fish dish is bacalao (cod) which is usually served with a saffron sauce and boiled vegetables with a thick tomato sauce on the side.

For dessert the musteat is the adoquin de Catalayud (Catalayud cobble stone), a very large boiled sweet, which always comes wrapped in a paper depicting the Virgin of the Pilar (local patron saint).

Another traditional dessert is migas con chocolate.

Studying abroad can be stressful THERE is no denying that studying abroad is the optimal way to learn a language and get to know another culture first-hand.

It also offers the opportunity to enhance employment opportunities.

However, planning to live and study in another country can also be very stressful, from figuring out what side of the road people are supposed to drive on to more serious matters like finding a place to live.

It is estimated that close to 100,000 foreign students have rented a home in Spain for the duration of their academic endeavours

so far this year.

Some students choose to hunt for a room in a shared flat before arriving in Spain, while others rely on specialised intermediaries.

However, many only begin to look for a place to live once they are in Spain and find that prices are higher than they expected.

The average monthly rental rate for a bedroom in Madrid is close to €350.

In comparison, a student could rent a three-bedroom and 85-square metre flat in Albacete or a two-bedroom and 90-square metre flat in Almeria. Sources indicate that between April and May 2013 the average rental

rate for a bedroom in a shared flat was around €275 a month.

It went down to €250 between August and September due to the supply being greater than demand.

Many real estate

agencies act as intermediaries between the proprietor and the potential tenant and guarantee students a three-month lease. Other websites specialising in home rentals require students to sign a one-year rental agreement.

Rental rates usually cover cleaning, maintenance and Internet fees.

For instance, average rental rates on Uniplaces, an international website for booking student accommodations online, are close to €410 for a bedroom in a

shared flat, including service charges.

Whole flats average €830 a month.

Other intermediaries, like Aluni, charge an extra fee for service expenses, like water and electricity, which averages €40 a month.

Yacht for a genius makes a return THE spectacular yacht designed by the late Steve Jobs and Philippe Starck is back in Mallorca one year after its first visit.

American entrepreneur and inventor, Steve Jobs,

co-founder and chairman of Apple, began designing the ‘Venus’ in 2009.

Jobs had already been diagnosed with cancer, but the prospect of dying did not deter him from

fully dedicating himself to the project. Unfortunately he passed away before the yacht was completed.

Measuring 78 metres in length and 12 metres in width, the ‘Venus’ was docked in Mallorca from June 24 to July 7.

Jobs used to rent yachts to go on holiday with his family. Those who knew him say he usually cut his holidays short, because he thought the yachts were not functional enough. That was his priority when designing the ‘Venus.’

The ‘Venus’ is considered to be a symbol of modern times. Its structure is made of aluminium and the yacht is equipped with the latest technology. Seven 27-inch iMacs are in charge of controlling all systems and navigating the yacht.

The yacht was launched in a Dutch shipyard (Koninklijke) almost one

year after Jobs died on October 5, 2011.

This time around it will remain in Mallorca until July 13.

Superyacht Cup Palma 2014 UNFURLED won the Superyacht Cup (SYC) Palma 2014 after a marvellous finale on the Bay of Palma.

The 112-foot Frers managed to snatch the title with a strong set of results in the three different races.

This year there was ample competition in all classes. With solid and constant results in each Class 2 regatta, the Superyacht Unfurled beat Ganesha, which came first in Class 1 and Gaia, which came in second in Class 2.

Heartbeat was the winner in Class 3.

Out of the five Class J boats that participated in the 18th edition of the SYC, Lionheart was the best in overall terms.

Held every year since 1997, the regatta is considered to be the oldest in Europe in its category.
