Soller in mourning GRIEVING neighbours have observed a minute’s silence to commemorate the latest victim of domestic violence in Spain. A large crowd took to the streets in Soller in remembrance of murder victim Maria Rosa Martinez Deya, 45. She was strangled by her husband with a rope. The man later died from a self-inflicted shotgun wound. “I feel very sorry for her daughters. What will happen to them? Maria Rosa was well-liked by everyone. A few days ago she told me she was having problems with her

husband. But I never imagined something like this could happen,” said the mayor of Fornalutx in an interview with the media. The municipalities of Soller, Deia and Fornalutx

declared a three-day official mourning period to condemn the brutal tragedy and raise awareness against the scourge of domestic violence. Some of the neighbours,

visibly affected, lit candles and cried in silence. The flags were flown at half-mast at the council and a feeling of sorrow and frustration permeated the air. “When my husband passed away a few years ago, she was working in the local government and helped me a great deal. She was a lovely woman,” said Dolores Carrillo, a friend of the victim. Maria Rosa Martinez is the second woman in the Balearic Islands this year to fall victim to domestic violence.
