Taxi-driver protest A VAN which was illegally taking tourists to Palma Airport was stopped by Calvia Local Police. A taxi driver had alerted them and the vehicle was located on the exit from Costa d’en Blanes urbanisation to the MA-1. It was being driven by a German woman whose passengers said she offered her services online. Taxi drivers recently prevented buses and taxis from leaving Son Sant Joan Airport for around two hours while they staged a protest against such activity. Local and National Police had to attend to allow traffic to leave the airport. The town hall has said it is aware of the concern amongst licensed taxi drivers regarding the problem of ‘pirate’ taxis.

Sales up for Mallorca wines

THE ‘Vins de Mallorca’ Protected Geographic Indication (IGP) has the highest levels of production and sales in the Balearic Islands. More than 16,153 hectolitres were sold in 2013. Seeing that wines under the IGP experienced benefits, several producers have preferred to join the group, led by the Balearic Islands’ oldest winery, Hereus de Ribas, which founded the Binissalem Designation of Origin (DO). More recently, the heir of the Mesquida winery from

Porreres, which was under the Pla i Llevant Designation of Origin, has also launched a new project under the IGP. Sales of wines under the Pla i Llevant Designation of Origin regulation have fallen by 5.3 per cent since 2013, while Binissalem wines saw sales rise by more than 17 per cent in the same year. The Binissalem region is totally dedicated to the wine sector and has made a big deal of harvesting celebrations to attract visitors.

Missing Briton found safe AN Englishman, 78, suffering from Alzheimer’s, was found in good health after spending a night lost in La Trapa area of Andratx. He had several cuts and bruises, as he had apparently fallen several times, and was taken to a medical centre for a check-up. However, he was released shortly afterwards

with no serious problems or injuries. His wife reported he had gone missing after going out on his own. The couple has lived in the area for many years and is fond of taking photos of the local scenery. A search was immediately launched, but night fell and he wasn’t found. However, at dawn the

following morning, 40 members of the Local Police, Guardia Civil, Mallorca firemen and Civil Protection began searching on land while a Guardia Civil helicopter flew over the mountains. Around midday, the man was found in the Coll de sa Gramola area where a taxi driver had left him the previous night.

Drugs sentence A MAN and a woman have been sentenced to three years and six months respectively in prison for selling cocaine and other drugs from their home in Palma in 2011. Cyclist injured A CYCLIST, 50, was injured in a fall down a two-metre embankment on the road between Soller and Deia when he lost control of his bicycle.

A WOMAN, 30, was found floating in a private pool in Son Ferriol and was rescued by paramedics and taken to Son Llatzer Hospital by ambulance.

PALMA City Hall’s Urban Development Department has approved the demolition of the Lluis Sitjar Stadium with a budget of almost €1.12 million.

Rescue drill A RESCUE drill was carried out in the Serra de Tramuntana involving the emergency services and the Air Force and simulating a crash between two planes.

Dead man A SWEDISH man, 68, was found dead in his home in Palma. His body was in an advanced state of decomposition and showed no signs of violence.

National Organ and Tissue Donors’ Day IN Spain, National Organ and Tissue Donors’ Day is held on the first Wednesday in June. For more than 20 years, Spain has been a world leader for organ donation and transplants. In 2013, Spain carried out 4,279 transplants thanks to 1,655 donors. Earlier this year, a record was broken when 45 transplants were carried out in just 24 hours. Most of the transplants in 2013 were kidneys (2,552), followed by 1,093 liver transplants, 285 lung, 249 heart, 92 pancreas and eight intestinal. Tissue such as bone, corneas and heart valves can also be donated. Spain has 35.12 donors per million inhabitants, well above the European average of 19 per million. More than 50 per cent of donors are over the age of 60.

Becoming an organ donor in Spain is quite easy, all that is required is a donor card, which is not legally binding, but does show the holder’s wish to donate their organs when they die. According to Spanish law, anyone deceased is a potential donor, unless they have expressed in life their wish for their organs not to be donated. Despite this, the usual procedure is to ask for written authorisation from the person’s relatives. It is not enough to present a donor card, which is why those wishing to donate are told to inform their relatives of their will so that they do not oppose. Balearic homes in financial difficulties EIGHTEEN per cent of homes in the Balearic Islands have great financial difficulty making it to the end of the month. According to a survey on life conditions carried out by the National Institute of Statistics for 2013, 42.5 per cent of homes in the Balearic Islands are unable to pay for unforeseen expenses, and 17.2 per cent are behind on payments for their habitual residence. More than 44 per cent can’t afford to go on holiday away from home for at least one week a year. The survey shows that the average income per person per year in the Balearic Islands is €10,386, while the average for Spain is €10,531. Meanwhile, on average in Spain, 16.9 per cent of households have serious financial difficulties to reach the end of the month, which is the highest figure since the financial crisis began. Forty-one per cent of households reportedly cannot afford unexpected expenses, which is a little

Bogus gas inspectors stole up to €500k TWENTY-SIX people were arrested in Malaga, Alicante, Madrid and Mallorca, for their alleged involvement with a gang carrying out bogus gas inspections. They are thought to have tricked as many as 5,000 people and made up to €500,000. Another two have been charged in Malaga, where the organisation’s leaders were based. In Mallorca, 15 people were arrested. They offered periodic gas inspections initially telling the victims it would cost them €50. However, once the ‘repairs’ began, they told them that they had found other problems which would put the price up, and on occasions charged up to €1,200.

In some cases they also stole valuable items, such as cash and jewellery, from the homes they entered. The victims were normally elderly foreign residents in Spain. One woman was visited every month by a group of bogus gas inspectors and paid more than €1,000 in total. The organisation had been operating for several years and periodically changed its name. The Guardia Civil recommends not letting anyone unknown into the home and checking the identity of alleged gas inspectors by calling the official number of the company they claim to work for.

Free Wi-Fi on Playa de Palma FREE Wi-Fi is available on Palma Beach and can allow for more than 100,000 daily connections. In the 50 days the connection has been available, the provider, Mallorcawifi.com, has detected almost one million devices in the area, mainly smartphones, of which more than 44,000 have connected, and 64 per cent have done daily. The local councillor and president of the tourism board, Alvaro Gijon, said the free WiFi connection is a pioneering system for its extension, the population it reaches, the way it is managed, and how easy it is to connect. The connection covers six kilometres of the beach from the sailing club in Can Pastilla to the one in s’Arenal, which is the largest beach connection in Europe. The city hall has paid nothing for the connection as the provider is financed by advertising.

Kidnapped children A 49-YEAR-OLD man decided to take justice into his own hands and ignore the court orders against him when he kidnapped his children. He went to their kindergarten, in Palma, and was waiting for them to come out, as were his ex-wife’s family. After a heated argument with the children’s grandparents he put them in his car, and proceeded to take them away. One of the women from his ex’s family got in the way and he crashed into her, grazing her knee and running over her foot. The police arrested him for attempted manslaughter.

Court requests further investigation A COURT in Palma de Mallorca has requested more information regarding the illegal recording of the Infanta Cristina’s appearance in court in February in the Noos case. A Malaga lawyer is suspected of leaking the video of the Infanta’s statement in court. The request has been made to the police forensics team in Madrid and aims to discover how the recording was taken. The lawyer denies having filmed the images and says he called the National

Police to collaborate with them. The aim now is to contrast existent data with his arguments statements. He also says there are numerous errors and contradictions in a previous report from the police. Experts from Malaga University have said that the images have been tampered with. The Duke of Palma could face between 10 and 19 years in prison for embezzlement, corruption, document falsification, fraud against the

Rape suspect arrested POLICE in Palma have arrested a 25-year-old man suspected of raping a woman he met in a kebab shop. The events took place in April when the man met the victim, 38, in a kebab shop in Palma. The victim has testified that although she had taken substances and alcohol that night, she never lost consciousness. She claims the suspected attacker took advantage of the fact she was drunk and proceeded to rape her. The 25-year-old initially denied this version of events but eventually admitted he had consensual sex with the woman. The police took some time to find the suspected rapist as the description given was rather vague and the victim could not remember very clearly due to her state of inebriation.

Police continue to investigate attack on man outside brothel NATIONAL POLICE arrested a man, 41, for grievous bodily harm, after he hit another over the head with an iron bar in Palma. The victim, who needed several

stitches to close the wound, was hit when he tried to help his brotherin-law, who was being beaten by the detainee. The events took place on the

seafront and when police arrived they found several people waiting around and one on the floor with a gaping head wound. Witnesses gave the police the metre-long iron bar and explained what had happened. The victim, a Romanian man, was taken to hospital where he explained that he had been in a local brothel when one of the girls told him that his brother-inlaw was involved in a fight outside. He said when he went to help, he received several blows to the head. The version of the detainee, who owns a local brothel, is that he was in his car when a group of Romanians made him stop and demanded that he pay off a debt, and when he got out of his car they started hitting him. David, a brown belt, trains at the Shinkai club in Santa Ponsa, and took a bronze and silver in the team events and a gold medal in the individual, of which he is very proud. Guardia Civil dismantle marihuana growing operation in sa Rapita THE GUARDIA CIVIL and the Local Police in sa Rapita have dismantled a high tech, hydroponic, marihuana growing operation. Investigators found 121 plants in two homes which were being grown by the hydroponic, using no soil - only nutrients in the water, method. The named resident of the two properties, a man of 43, has been arrested for crimes against public health. Hydroponics have become more and more popular with illegal marihuana growers in Spain in the last eight months as the system occupies less space, and requires no soil, just water, lights and chemicals which are

21 month sentence for abusing wife A 45-YEAR-OLD man has been sentenced to 21 months in prison and community service for abusing his wife for four years. Between 2006 and 2010 the man humiliated and hit his wife in the family home in Son Serra de Marina. The majority of the episodes of physical and mental violence took

place in front of their young son. The attacker, who was facing four years in prison, confessed in Palma Provincial Court and accepted his sentence. In 2006, he dislocated her shoulder. In 2009, after a heated argument, he hit his wife and threw her onto the marital bed, pulled her hair, punched her all over her body

and hit her with a slipper. That night the victim, battered and bruised, tried to commit suicide by swallowing sleeping pills. The victim was taken to Muro hospital and while there received a phone call from her husband accusing her of being a bad mother and abandoning their child, he also threatened her with more violence

if she went to the authorities. After another period in hospital she was diagnosed with severe depression, due to being mistreated by her partner for the past three years. They had been married since 1995. In 2010, a court in Inca issued a restraining order against the man.

Alpha Pam case could be reopened THE Balearic Courts will allow the case surrounding the death of Senegalese immigrant Alpha Pam to be reopened. A judge ruled that each of the four associations which presented the case, Mallorca Human Rights, the Senegalese Association and unions CGT and UGT, should pay €3,000 bail. This was appealed before the higher court, and now a judge has said that the situation of each organisation should be taken into account so that they can carry out legal action. Their case was against the senior officials of the

Beaten in a bar fight A MOROCCAN man, 38, was left unconscious after being hit over the head with a bottle in a bar in Andratx. He was badly injured after being hit several times with a bottle and lost consciousness. The Guardia Civil and the Local Police searched for the two attackers all night but were unable to locate them. The incident took place in Plaza de España and when the emergency services arrived they found the man bleeding profusely from a head wound and tried to resuscitate and stabilise him. He didn’t react to medical attention and was taken by ambulance, to hospital. Witnesses all claimed to have seen nothing or said that it happened so quickly that they had no chance to notice the identity of the attackers, believed to also be Moroccans.

ALPHA PAM: Wrongly diagnosed with bronchitis. Balearic Government, who they accused of negligence in the death of Alpha Pam in April 2013 from undiagnosed tuberculosis. His case became famous after claims that he was denied medical care. However, according to his relatives, Alpha Pam was

not turned away and was in fact treated, but for the wrong thing. His family says that he was initially seen at Inca Hospital and later referred to the health centre in Can Picafort, where he was wrongly diagnosed with bronchitis.

Tyre fire at Palmanyola FOUR fire trucks were called out to control a fire at the tyre depot in Palmanyol, Bunyola. The fire affected the great number of tyres accumulated at the location which is right next to the water treatment plant in Son Reus. Due to the nature of the burning material it took four trucks to get the blaze under control; the trucks came from Calvia, Soller, Inca and Palma. The cause of the fire is, as yet, unknown but police are continuing their investigations.

Unsolved crime of death in Andratx THERE is an unsolved crime in Andratx. The death of Maria Coll, a 75-year-old woman who was run over near her house on the evening of April 9, 2013, has not been resolved. Courts in Palma have acquitted the driver of a van, a middle-aged Italian man, who was accused of running her over in the old part of the town. There is not enough evidence against him and neither are

Building damage A FAMILY in Calle Verge de Lluc in Lloseta has complained that work being carried out in a neighbouring house is causing cracks in their property.

Fake imports ANDRATX: The woman was run over near her house in April 2013. there any witnesses or tyre skid marks on the street. Guardia Civil reports are

not conclusive and even the exact location of the accident is unknown.

The judge’s conclusion raises the possibility that another vehicle may have hit the woman in Calle Antoni Mulet. One of the tyres ran over her ankle. It was the suspect who called the police and informed them that he had found a lady in the street who looked like she had been run over. The victim was taken to Son Espases Hospital with serious injuries but died hours later.

SEVENTEEN people were arrested at Palma, Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia airports for illegally importing fake medicines.

Violent attack THE confessed murderer of an 84year-old man in Pollensa in January confirmed in court that he hit him four times on the head with an axe during a robbery.

Fire in the Plaza Major of Palma A LARGE fire provoked widespread concern in the Plaza Major of Palma last week. The fire originated in the store room of a supermarket in which there were a lot of trolleys full of cardboard and this made a lot of smoke. The Local Police and the fire brigade were able to get the blaze under control and extinguish it quickly. There were no casualties and it was not necessary to evacuate the area. The Local Police arrived promptly and separated the trolleys full of cardboard from anything else that was in danger of catching fire. They used several fire extinguishers and when the fire brigade arrived the fire was brought under control. Police are investigating the cause.

Spain’s PP beats Socialists in EU elections OVER recent days some 400 million citizens across the European Union’s 28 member states had the chance to elect a new European Parliament. Sunday saw Spain’s ruling Popular Party government defeat the main opposition Socialist Party in a close competition for EU Parliament seats. Both main parties lost ground to smaller parties who took the opportunity to capitalize in the elections after years of civil discontent due to high unemployment, corruption and harsh austerity policies championed by EU leaders. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s PP, which swept to power in late 2011 with an absolute majority, took 26 per cent of the votes, down from 44 per cent in the general election. The conservative PP took 16 of Spain’s 54 seats, with 14 seats going to the PSOE. In 2009 the Socialist Party took 29 per cent of the votes, but this year this had dropped to 23 per cent. Both mainstream parties suffered in these recent elections. In 2009, the parties took a combined figure of 47 seats. This year their shared total fell from 80 per cent to 49 per cent. The parties lost a combined 17 European Parliament seats, leaving them with 30 out of Spain’s 54. They had been expected to lose about 10. Voter disenchantment following a deep economic crisis resulted in fragmentation, with eight smaller parties sharing the remaining 24 seats. This was a far bigger total than preelection polling had predicted.

EUROPEAN ELECTIONS: 28 member states elect a new European Parliament. Unlike voters in many EU countries, Spaniards rejected parties that favour cutting ties with the European Union. However, they gave strong support to antiausterity, leftist parties as well as separatists in Catalonia who are calling for a referendum on splitting the region from the rest of Spain. The Plural Left, a coalition that includes Communists, added four

seats for a total of six. New party ‘Podemos’ (We can), which adopted the rhetoric of the ‘indignant’ movement that took over Spanish plazas three years ago to protest economic inequality, secured five seats. The centrist Union, Progress and Democracy party won four seats, up from one. Catalan voters turned out in strong numbers. They made the oldest

pro-independence party, Republican Left of Catalonia, the region’s top vote-getter for the first time since the 1930s. The Republican Left got 23.7 per cent of the vote, up from 9.2 per cent in 2009. Voter turnout in Catalonia was 47.6 per cent. This was 10 per cent higher than in 2009 and slightly higher than Sunday’s nationwide turnout of 45.8 per cent.

ITH Spanish political parties having come through a little the worse for wear after the EU elections it was no great surprise that Rubalcaba should have resigned after the extremely poor performance of the PSOE at the urns. It was the smaller, more recently emerged, parties which took the lead and capitalised on years of civil discontent, corruption, shockingly high unemployment figures and harsh austerity measures to take seats away from the ‘Big Two’. Sunday’s biggest success story came from Spain’s new left-wing, antiausterity party ‘Podemos’, which celebrated its wins only three months after its formation. Podemos (We Can) stunned national and international analysts and pollsters by winning 8 per cent of the vote and capturing a total of five seats. They accrued such an unexpected

amount of votes in large part thanks to the younger voters who turned out in stunningly large numbers to support them. But this is really no great surprise as Podemos has risen on a wave of anti-establishment feeling in the country which has been expressed mainly by the young, who are getting the roughest deal out of the recession. In some regions, including the capital, Podemos has emerged as the third largest political force after the ruling PP and the PSOE. All the polls taken before the vote suggested that the new party would struggle to earn more than one seat. This new shooting star of the political scene, headed up by the charismatic 35-year-old Pablo Iglesias, could even harness the disenfranchised ‘Indignados’ (Outraged), who are clearly looking for a leader and some political weight behind them. We can only hope.

Hard time for soft fruit SPAIN has always been the EU’s main producer and exporter of strawberries, producing an annual 300,000 tons. Ninety-six per cent of the 7,000 hectares given to strawberry growing are located in Huelva, but the last two years have been negative for producers. Not only did the fruit fetch low prices but the UK, France, Germany and Italy are beginning to grow their own in more modern installations.

Germany now grows 150,000 tons of strawberries a year, while Poland is currently producing an annual 170,000 tons. Holland and France are also growing more, over 50,000 tons each. Spanish strawberry growers are now exploring other avenues and are beginning to grow soft fruit like raspberries, blackberries and blueberries. These produce smaller crops but sell at a better price.

Desert AVE must keep within budget IN 2011 a Spanish consortium won a €6.736 billion contract for the Medina-Mecca AVE high speed train. The contract, which requires the line to be finished in December 2016 and functioning by January 2017, includes penalties for late delivery. There is also a 10 per cent margin on the stipulated price but no more. “The Saudis want the best at the cheapest price,” consortium sources told Spanish daily El Pais. One of the 10 people arrested for the Spanish AVE scandal in Spain was in Saudi Arabia working on the desert AVE when the story broke, the same sources revealed. He has since been suspended from duty. There have been no Saudi comments on the scandal, the sources said. “Neither were they worried when Sacyr had problems in Panama. But they were worried when Spain was on the brink of a bailout and the bond yield had soared.” So far the Spanish have completed 185 of the planned 450 kms. “We are not alone,” the consortium’s president told an El Pais interviewer. This was an oblique reference to China which has the task of building the infrastructure and delivers “late and badly” according to the consortium. The first AVE will be making test journeys by early 2015, it promised confidently, aware prompt delivery will ensure more contracts from Saudi Arabia’s €100 billion infrastructure budget.

GOOD salesmen are worth their weight in gold. My first lesson was when our new sales manager paused at the factory’s workshop where we could see employees hard at work. He smiled: “When you stop selling they’re out of a job.” Many businesses function through their sales team. I recall a services supplier that, by mailed inducements, converted only 1 / 100 leads. Changing strategy they gave the leads to a newly recruited sales team. The cost of the sales force did not add to its overheads. It simply upped the prices and converted the difference into commission and administration costs. The conversion rate shot up to 1 / 3.

SALESPEOPLE: The backbone of any company. Chatting with a loft conversion specialist he told me he personally followed up customer enquiries. He would visit clients after work or during weekends. This approach comes with the territory for homebased tradesmen.

My client was a craftsman but his people skills were not strong. He disliked selling when all he wanted was to be with his wife and kids. My suggestion he engage a salesman was dismissed out of hand. He wasn’t making enough profit to

feed another’s man’s family. I explained that employing a representative would not cost him a penny. He should increase his prices by 20 per cent and offer a salesperson 15 per cent commission. His prices would still be competitive. He could then have his weekends and evenings free. His face lit up and by the time I was leaving he was making plans to advertise for a salesman. Many companies employ commission-based salesmen yet despite higher prices they are more successful than the self-employed sector. Good salesmen first sell themselves; instilling confidence they are their company’s ambassadors. They listen and understand the client’s needs. Explaining their service without jargon, they sell benefits, professionally close and scratch the pad. If you are personable and have genuine concern for client’s needs you will spend your working life making people happy, looking after your family and keep others employed. Mission accomplished.

More evictions than ever

VODAFONE ESPAÑA: Profits were reduced by 58.9 per cent.

Vodafone España profit down but they are still confident VODAFONE’S Spanish turnover dropped by 11 per cent during the 20132014 tax year. This made it the British group’s worst-performing subsidiary, with a 25.7 per cent fall in earnings before tax, depreciation and amortisation. Once all these factors were taken into account, Vodafone España’s profits

were reduced by 58.9 per cent. Spain’s economic situation, the slow recovery in consumer spending, competition from rivals and lower connection charges have all eaten into the group’s profits. Despite this discouraging result, Vodafone’s confidence in Spain remains intact.

Last year it invested €608 million, 32.3 per cent more than in 2012, destined for its new fibre optic network which by last March had been installed in 276,000 homes. The 4G mobile network was rolled out in all Spanish provinces and the company also spent €7.2 billion on acquiring the Ono cable operator.

BANKS granted 28,583 mortgages in the first three months of this year. The 48.3 per cent quarter-on-quarter increase is the ‘up’ side of the see-saw. Down at the other end are the 49,600 families who lost their homes last year, an 11 per cent increase on 2012. Despite a new law alleviating the situation of householders unable to meet mortgage payments, 38,961 families lost their principal residence to the banks in 2013. Nor did the law increase the number of negotiated surrenders although this was one of the new law’s specific aims. Agreements between the banks and defaulters fell by 9.1 per cent to 17,907 according to the Bank of Spain. These represented 46 per cent of repossessions compared with 50 per cent in 2012. The remaining 21,054 properties reclaimed through the courts were empty when repossessed except in 1,688 cases of principal homes and 392 relating to other properties. The police intervened during 147 evictions, more than 50 per cent fewer than in 2012. The AEB bank association emphasised its willingness to negotiate despite the 5.67 per cent increase in mortgage default. As evictions represented only 0.77 per cent of all mortgages, the AEB said, this indicates that a solution was found for defaulters in approximately 5 per cent of cases. There is no motive for optimism, the PAH antieviction platform argued. “These are alarming figures without comparison anywhere in the EU,” said spokeswoman Lucia Martin.

The study plans to follow 2,500 11 and 12year-olds and take a look at their cognitive ability thinking skills, memory and attention - and then repeat the tests in 2017. The researchers say “very little” is known about what impact these

technologies have on children. Health experts in general advise that children under the age of 16 should not be given mobile phones. So any parents out there might be better off holding back on buying young children fancy mobile phones, and putting that money away towards their collage fund!

Tourism up in April by 13.2% ALMOST 5.3 million foreign tourists visited Spain in April, 13.2 per cent more than the same month last year, according to the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. This was mainly thanks to the boost at Easter, as well as the fact that tourists are avoiding going to certain traditional destinations such as Greece, Egypt, Israel, Jordan and others. Over the first four months of the year, the number of tourists from Germany has increased by 11.3 per cent (2.51 million), there have been 10.9 per cent more French tourists (2.52 million), 6.5 per

cent more from the UK (3.1 million) and 13 per cent more from Italy (0.87 million). However, the number of tourists from Portugal fell by 3 per cent and US tourists by 9.5 per cent. The region with the highest number of visitors, with more than four million, was the Canary Islands, 13.1 per cent more; followed by Cataluña, with 3.9 million in total (10.4 per cent more). In Andalucia, there were 10 per cent more visitors (2.02 million), while numbers fell in the Balearic Islands by 6.8 per cent to 1.1 million.

When the chips are down I RECENTLY lost my cat. I went to the vet and asked if he would amend the information on the cat’s chip to say he had been lost. I then asked if a vet would check to see if a chip and the person’s particulars were one and the same when an animal was taken in for treatment. He said: “No, probably not.” So why should I go to the trouble and expense of having a chip put into my animal in the first place? Is it only on the off-chance and the very unlikely event of a dog or cat being picked up and taken to an animal rescue centre? Veterinary care isn’t cheap so why can’t they do this little thing? It would take minutes to run a machine over the animal and could reunite a person with their much-loved pet. For the life of me I cannot understand why they don’t do this. I suppose it’s because they are not trained to do so. People don’t seem able to think for themselves. The nanny state the world over. Fine situation ALMOST a year ago, Marbella set up the ‘foto-grua’ service, an initiative consisting of private towtruck operators taking photos of vehicles that in their opinion break parking laws. He said that in Vietnam, this guy was on fire and in their panic, they threw a bag of flour all over him to put the fire out. Well, it not only put the fire out but he never even had a blister! So, I put my hand in the bag of flour for 10 minutes and then pulled it out. There was no red mark or a blister and absolutely no pain. Now I keep a bag of flour in the fridge, as cold flour feels even better than room-temperature flour. Snail mail I HAD a letter delivered by Correos on April 3 dated March 13 in England. The corresponding letter for my wife was delivered on April 17. Callous crooks AS the victim of a recent £800 scam, I write in the hope that I can prevent other disabled people from financial loss. A website advertises portable oxygen solutions and, with my judgement clouded by my wife’s condition requiring 24/7 oxygen, I paid £800 for a unit that has

never arrived despite over 25 emails. I was informed by Barclays Bank Fraud department that the account to which I transferred the money has been frozen on suspicion of fraudulent usage. Their website illegally uses the address of a firm of lawyers without their permission and the use of the UKAS and SGS logos is also totally illegal. Take it easy WITH reference to the article on speeding, in the UK it has always been the case that anyone exceeding the speed limit even by 1mph was liable to be prosecuted. I believe it has always been the same in Spain too. I suspect that the practice of not reporting drivers for small infringements will probably continue as before. But note: breaking the law even by a little is still breaking the law. However, as speedometers which are not accurate - will in almost all cases read higher than the actual speed you are doing, responsible drivers have nothing to fear. HEY! It’s holiday time again and hotels and restaurants everywhere will naturally be looking to tourists to help fill their premises - and their bank accounts. They’ll also be looking to TripAdvisor to gauge how well - or badly - they’re

perceived by Joe Public. All the more so with the recent phenomenon of blackmailers or ‘food blaggers.’ Those who pitch up, drink the wine and eat the food in your restaurant or stay the night in your hotel and then, at the end of the meal/check-out, say: “We’d like our food/hotel bill comped or we’ll put a **** review on TripAdvisor.” Now, the odd reader may recall I’ve written about TripAdvisor before. And that just mentioning it

gets my blood pressure up. Now, I’ve warned you: don't get me started again! Oh, OK then ... The problem with all these customer review guides or ‘selfies’ like TripAdvisor is that the grading isn’t consistent. Three star hotels may be great in their own category, but in TripAdvisor etc they appear as good as the outstanding five star ones. With restaurants, it’s the same story. At the time of writing, a ‘tiny fish and chip shop’ in

London, for instance, finds itself placed in the top 10 of the capital’s 16,000 restaurants alongside ‘three star’ Michelin ones! Reviewers generally give high marks if they’re happy even if the place is less than excellent. Often they rave about simple stuff that should be a given. Or the reverse. You can easily work this out for yourself by checking out lots of reviews and looking for repeated complaints. Do they have a consistent

theme (‘Surly, unhelpful staff,’ ‘restaurant terrible,’ ‘Room dirty’) or are they just plain daft? (‘Didn’t like the carpet colour,’ ‘The restaurant decor looked tired,’ ‘The waiter didn’t speak a word of English” this in a restaurant here in Spain.) Then note if any of this is reflected in the middleof-the-road comments. As for malicious reviews, they just stick out like a sore thumb. But why read so many? A holiday or business trip

costs time and money so it pays to make the effort for a successful outcome. And if they’ve enjoyed their restaurant meals or hotel stay, the last thing on most people’s minds is blagging, let alone blackmail. No Hurry To Raise UK Interest Rates As the UK economy improves and house prices rise, there has been much discussion about how soon the Bank of England will raise its base interest rate. The Bank has however now pretty much quashed speculation that we could see an increase this year. Bank of England Governor, Mark Carney, previously said that the Bank would “absolutely” be prepared to raise rates before next May’s general election. Analysts have since observed that the recent strength in the UK economy could lead to an earlier rise. In the lead up to the Bank’s quarterly Inflation Report on 14th May, there were reports that the Bank would endorse market expectations of a hike in the first quarter of next year. However the Bank of England instead reiterated that it is in no rush to raise rates. At the press conference Mr Carney said that the Bank Rate will remain low for a while. He cautioned: “Amidst the

Mr Carney did acknowledge that the economy has “edged closer” to the point where the Bank Rate will need to rise, but when this does happen, increases will be gradual and limited, so rates “may stay at historically low levels for some time”. There had been discussion among analysts that the Bank of England could use interest rate hikes to cool the housing market. Mr Carney however said this would be the last line of defence, and that the Bank’s Financial Policy Committee has a wide range of tools it can use to reduce risks emanating from the housing market. The Governor concluded his press conference speech with a sporting analogy: “Securing the recovery is like making it through the qualifying rounds of the World Cup. That is an achievement, but not the ultimate goal. The real tournament is just beginning and its prize is a

strong, sustained and balanced expansion.” High street and offshore banks set their own interest rates on their savings and deposit accounts. A report in The Telegraph on 12th May disclosed that UK banks and building societies have reduced interest paid to savers by almost £1 billion over the last year. In March 2013 easy-access savings accounts were paying an average interest of 1.04%. By March 2014 this had fallen to 0.75%. Simon Rose of the campaign group Save Our Savers commented: “These calculations are truly shocking, and show there is nowhere for savers to turn. The Government might have had a 'Budget for savers' but the elephant in the room is interest rates, which have been left so low that many people who rely on the returns from savings are struggling to maintain living standards.”

As to when the Bank Rate will finally start to rise, we can expect much more discussion over the coming months. Mr Carney himself commented that the exact timing will be the subject of considerable speculation, but that the ultimate answer will depend on the evolution of the economy. UKIP puts main parties on the run I SN’T it interesting to note that a couple of years ago, the only column where you saw the initials UKIP mentioned was this ole boy’s scribble and these days it’s difficult to find a column that excludes them!? Don’t forget you read it here first, folks! Remember all the sneers and derogatory flack I took for it as well? Ha! I also recall the lady some years ago who, after my warnings about conflict with Islam extremists, wrote: “Oh come on, Leapy, what war!?” Haven’t heard much from that particular source for some time, either. Lovely to see the hierarchy of the major parties wriggling liked hooked minnows in the light of UKIP’s recent successes. Most of those interviewed have been asked the same question: “How are you going to deal with this threat from Farage’s party?” With slight variations they have all given exactly the same answer:

“Well, we’re going to have to listen to the public and take the appropriate action to comply with their wishes.” Er, but I thought that’s what politicians were always supposed to do! Well of course they are, but they don’t, do they? It’s not until something really rattles these arrogant out-of-touch con artists’ cocoons that they start taking any notice of Joe Public at all. Well, the Farage team has certainly done that. The frightening thing is it’s all so simple. With UKIP’s almost nonexistent policies on most other issues (despite the irate gentleman who reeled off a whole rather unconvincing list to me!) the party has gained all its ground on two fronts only: Immigration and the EU.

RATTLING CAGES: Nigel Farage’s UKIP. The British public is simply fed up. Fed up with the amount of foreigners flooding the country, fed up with Brussels and its nonsensical ’uman rights’, PC and ludicrous rules and regulations, fed up with

being taken for mugs and fed up with losing their proud British identity. UKIP will never gain enough power to bring about the kind of changes needed (not for the moment, anyway) but are a

wonderful sounding-board for the British voters to bounce off and reverberate along the musty, self-satisfied, arrogant and complacent corridors of those who can. Meanwhile, I’ve got the answer to all the problems involving the biased BBC – sack ‘em all and start over. This latest gem really takes the whole tin. They edited the word ‘girl’ from a remark made by a sports commentator because they considered it ‘sexist’. You simply couldn’t make it up. What description of Homo sapiens would they consider acceptable? All of us wearing grey ‘onesies’ and being referred to as ‘its’? British Broadcasting Corporation? More like Bumbling Biased Cretins. Planning for ‘Escuelas de Verano’ AS the calendar shifts into June so my mind turns to the most difficult quarter of the year: the school summer holidays. I’ve been known to complain in these pages about the length of the holidays, mainly because of the detrimental effect it has on getting anything done over what is for many of us the busiest part of the year. I hadn’t really considered how it affected my daughter La Gidg as I have always assumed she was having a fabulous time and that a three month long holiday was okay for her. Apparently not. Julie from the Kip McGrath centre in Son Quint in Palma told me last week that if your child is out of school for more than a month then they start to forget what they have learnt and going back to school for them is like starting back at the bottom of a very steep hill.

Family Matters This is more or less okay if your kids are just (“Just”!) having a six week summer break, but when it is double that then they are really going back in September at a disadvantage.

Well, I suppose that is okay if all of the kids are going back with a disadvantage but La Gidg doesn’t speak Spanish or Catalan outside of her school and after school activities, we don’t attempt to speak to her in Spanish, although I do make her talk on behalf of me sometimes when I get stuck in a tricky meeting.

So if your kids are speaking other languages from their mother tongue and then stop completely for a three month period they will start to lose the ability to speak in that language. “Use it or lose it” doesn’t just apply to me and my burgeoning fitness, turns out it also applies to my little girl’s hard earned

language skills. So it’s important to find summer schools which will keep reminding Gidg about her non-native languages and even her maths which she seems to have found an aptitude for, but in the guise of having fun. Even though she speaks Spanish and Catalan really well I don’t think she feels comfortable in it. I want her

to be able to feel comfortable in groups of Spanish speaking kids where she won’t feel like she is the “guiri” and stick out. So this year I’m putting her into a language specific summer school (Kip does English only and Spanish only summer schools depending on what you are trying to achieve) where she will do fun activities and speak Spanish without any pressure. In addition to Kip we’re also packing her off back to the UK to spend three weeks with Grandma, and then another three weeks in France with the other Grandma, so the time spent in Mallorca over the summer is going to be crucial to her retaining her spoken language skills, and even improving them, that will shock her form teacher in September! www.familymatters mallorca.com

SOS-AnimalMallorca for protection THE SOS-ANIMALMALLORCA organisation was founded by a mixed group of Spanish and European nationals in 1995 on the island of Mallorca. The founders had been affected by the cruelty, neglect and the lack of understanding with regards to domestic animals that existed and felt there was a need for such a charity. Today, SOS-Animal-Mallorca has come a long way since it began 16 years ago, and has established itself as a recognised ambassador for the rights and protection of animals. In 2004 the foundation SOS-Animal was established in order to support the SOS-Animal-Mallorca organisation. Through this foundation, in the year

Are school summer holidays too long? As the school summer holidays approach in both Spain and the UK, the Euro Weekly News asks if the number of weeks children are on holiday over the summer is too long or is it not long enough?

AM MYLER is from London, currently on holiday in Fuengirola (Malaga). Back home, she is a secondary schoolteacher who says that regardless of what students and parents prefer, she appreciates and needs the long break. “I don’t think most people understand that teaching is not a job where you just clock in and clock out at the end of the day,” Sam said. “Not only do you arrive very early in the morning, but you also take your homework home with you. There are also difficult parents and misbehaving children to manage, on top of the

I don’t think holidays are too long; I think good teachers earn every break they can get.” There was another vote given for the length of holidays not being too long, but for another reason. Anne Pringle, currently on holiday outside Malaga capital, disagreed that holidays were too long. She has two children aged seven and nine, and loves having them at home all summer. “Having long summers allows us to have plenty of time to reconnect ANDY COX: Long holidays are fine.

as a family. The school year is so hectic. Summers allow us to not only go somewhere for a holiday away, but also to normalise our lives once we’re back. We need a long enough chance to disconnect from the norm and also to enjoy being home together before going back into the frantic pace of the school year with all the kids’ activities.” There were mixed views on the Costa Blanca regarding the length of the summer holidays. Rosalie Robinson, who is retired and has ived in La Marina for 12 years, said: “It is a long time. When my grandchildren went to school here I would look after them and my granddaughter actually missed school and her friends, but my grandson never particularly liked school so he enjoyed the long break.” Another of Rosalie’s grandchildren, Lauren, a health club manager on holiday from the UK, said: “It’s nearly 12 weeks and that is too long, but I think the UK’s six weeks is too short, eight weeks would be about right.” Her friend Danny, a window cleaner,

added: “I wish I had that much of a long summer holiday when I was a kid. I hated school and did everything I could to get out of it.” Bar supervisor from La Marina, Andy Cox, who is a father of two, with a third due any day, is happy with the summer break: “I quite like it, it’s too hot for them to be at school. Euro zone economic data mostly mediocre

Commentary by Moneycorp EUR Although the euro zone economic data were mostly mediocre at best, they were not important enough numbers to have much effect on the euro. Jens Weidmann, a member of the ECB governing council, did: He implied that if the euro remained too strong the ECB would take action which, as a by-product, would send it lower. On the week the euro lost two thirds of a US cent and more than a cent to sterling.

USD The dollar did not have much to say for itself. It added two thirds of a cent against the euro and lost three quarters of a cent to sterling. The figures from the US housing sector were better than some other recent data and jobseeker numbers continued to fall. The main damage was done by the Federal Reserve, which reminded investors that they would have to wait quite a while for higher US interest rates.

The Canadian economic data did it no favours though, with a net outflow of foreign investment in March and falling wholesale and retail sales. The Loonie could not compete with the stronger UK figures for inflation and retail sales.

AUD Once again it was the Reserve Bank of Australia that did for the Aussie. This time it was an assistant governor, who commented that an outflow of capital would be likely to weaken the currency. The Australian ecostats were of no help whatsoever, especially the one which showed a weakening of consumer confidence. It all cost the Aussie a cent against the euro and three cents against sterling. NZD A continuing fall in the price of powdered milk, one of New Zealand’s major exports, and a generally risk-averse attitude among investors contributed to the weakness of the Kiwi last week. It fell by three quarters of a cent against the US dollar and by nearly three cents against sterling. The NZ dollar could not compete with the stronger UK figures for inflation and retail sales.

Rental prices in Spain THE average price for property rental in Spain is €6.91 per square metre per month, according to property website fotocasa.es. Prices have risen a little in the first months of this year after as many as 19 months of falling prices. The highest rent is in Ibiza (€11.79 per square metre), followed by San Sebastian (€10.73). Meanwhile, the cheapest is Baeza, in Jaen, where a property can be rented for €3.21 per square metre per month. New housing complex planned for Bilbao B

ANKING group Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA), recently presented its new housing complex, Alhondiga Residencial, in the centre of Bilbao. Through its real estate branch, Anida, it announced the start of commercialisation of the complex, which is still being built and has already had 1,000 requests for infor-mation from potential buyers. Canadian investors buy Castellana 200 THE Castellana 200 complex in Madrid has been sold for €140 million. The buyers are PSP Investments, one of Canada’s largest pension investment managers, and Drago Capital a property investment and management company which currently manages €2.8 billion in assets on the Iberian Peninsula. PSP invest funds for the pension plans of the Public Service, the Canadian Forces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Reserve Force, and manages $79.8 billion in assets. Together they have already purchased three buildings in 2011, two in Madrid and another in Barcelona. The agreement they signed that year will see a total investment of €400 million in Spain in total. The Castellana 200 complex, built in 2011, has two office buildings, one with total surfaces of 5,155 square metres and the other 15,137 square metres.

Spanish real estate fair in Paris

THE Spanish Real Estate and Tourism Fair in Paris will be held from September 19 to 21. It has been organised by the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in France (Cocef), CIC Iberbanco (a branch of the Credit Mutuel group) and Expo 21, an expert in such events. Real estate promoters, tourist offices, advisors, travel agencies and airlines, amongst others, have shown interest in taking part in the fair which is hoped to boost both property sales and tourism in Spain. Seventy companies are expected to take part. Spanish businesses will be able to present their products to the French market, which is currently one of the most important in Spain, and there will be a variety of quality offers and guarantees which buyers wouldn’t normally find. According to Cocef, Spain is a popular destination for second homes amongst the French, who are the second market in Spain for properties purchased. Businesses at the fair can be seen by more than 12 million people and visitors will receive expert advice to help them select the best destination for their needs. Buyers can also organise loans at the fair, which is aimed at people who already know Spain, as well as investors looking to put their money in a country with excellent safety levels and legal guarantees.

A brief history of the OSTAR race created by pioneering sailors T

HE OSTAR (Observer Singlehanded Trans-Atlantic Race) was created in 1960 by a handful of pioneering sailors. The race was organised every four years by the Royal Western Yacht Club (RWYC) from 1960 through to the 2000 event, albeit with a lot of involvement from the French event organiser Pen Duick in the 90’s, in order to cater for the demands of the professional campaigns that dominated the event. After the 2000 edition, OC Sport stepped in to develop the event and acquired the rights to the professional part for boats of 50 feet and upwards. The RWYC continues to organise a solo transatlantic race for Corinthian and nonprofessional sailors that is still known as the (O)STAR, and that is restricted to boats of up to 50 feet only. This race usually falls a year after the professional

big boat race i.e. 2005, 2009, and started on May 27 this year with 21 entries. Both the amateur Yacht Club event and the Transat have the right to link to the history of the original race created in 1960, and to the rich history it has produced. The first race was competed by just a handful of pioneering sailors including Francis Chichester and Blondie Hasler who coined the phrase: “One man, one boat, the ocean.” There has been tragedy, dramatic rescues and exceptional drama since the race began in 1960. Over time the Transat, as it is known today, has evolved and now serves the professional end of offshore sailing. But there are few modern day races that can reflect on such a long and outstanding history.

Victory for the Palma Royal Nautical Club in trophy race THE AIRLAN AERMEC, belonging to boat owner Juan Cabrer of the Palma Royal Nautical Club (RCNP), won third place in the ORC 2 category of the Conde de Godo Merchbanc Trophy organised by the Barcelona Royal Nautical Club (RCNB). Cabrer was very pleased with his placement bearing in mind the high standards of the fleet that took part in the event. The low wind intensity was an impediment to the finals of the 41 edition of the trophy. Despite the efforts of the regatta committee, directed by Vincenc Cespedes, and the willingness of the more than 60 participating craft the regatta had an ill-omened closing day. Despite this the classification closed with few differences between the leading groups of the four categories which

The event, which includes an exhibition race and two Superyacht classes, will close with a prize-giving ceremony at Palma’s Es Baluard Museum of Contemporary Art. The Superyacht Cup, which has been running since 1996, is the longest running superyacht regatta in Europe. Racing for the luxury event will be managed by internationally renowned

yacht club Palma Royal Nautical Club (RCNP). All yachts taking part will be fitted with Trac Trac GPS units, meaning that racing can be viewed live on the internet. The prestigious event always attracts superb yachts from all over the world - and this year is no exception. Spectacular schooner Borkumriff IV will take part, along with Rainbow, Heartbeat and Nautor Swan 100 Munzuni, to name a few. Biel Llado wins Mama Optimist BIEL LLADO, a sailor with the Royal Palma Nautical Club (RCNP), has won the Mama Optimist Trophy celebrated last weekend and organised by the Es Portitxol Nautical Club. More than a hundred boats took part in the regatta. The podium was completed by Marcos Plomer, of the Port d’Andratx Sailing Club, in second place and Manel Barber, of the Mahon Maritime Club. Giulietta Lang and Jordi Llado, both from the RCNP, completed the podium in fourth and fifth places, respectively.
