Jet-setting jewel thief behind bars A MAN, 42, who was allegedly involved in three major jewellery heists in Cannes, France (pictured), has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for robbing a Cala Rajada hotel.

The French citizen of Algerian origin was arrested by Guardia Civil in June last year charged with committing several robberies from hotel rooms in the area, which he broke into using a screwdriver.

He reportedly stole €600,000 worth of jewellery, valuables and cash by breaking into 25 safes

before being caught by a member of staff at one of the hotels.

He violently resisted capture, threatened witnesses with a knife and was caught when attempting to flush €5,520 worth of banknotes down a toilet. He was also carrying €50,000 worth of jewellery at the time as well as other items, all of which he had attempted to hide in a false ceiling in the toilets.

French agents travelled to Manacor following his arrest to question him about three heists during the Cannes Film Festival in

May 2013, but he refused to cooperate. France has requested his extradition, considering him part of a dangerous international gang.

In one of the robberies, the culprit entered the hotel room of the luxury jeweller’s Chopard representative and stole jewellery worth €1.4 million destined to be worn by actresses on the red carpet. Security images show the thief exiting the hotel with a suitcase.

Another robbery was committed at the same hotel and at a mansion in Cannes.

€3.6m investment to attract more tourists THE Tourist Accomodation Consortium plans to invest €3.6 million to improve tourism infrastructures and beat seasonality in Mallorca.

Towns interested in carrying out projects have a month to present them, and they will have to pay 20 per cent of the budget.

Tourists stayed an average of 4.91 days in Mallorca in February this year, according to the National Institute of Statistics.

One of the areas where tourists stay the longest in Spain is the Palma-Calvia area, with an average of 4.75, beating destinations such as Barcelona, the Costa

Blanca, Costa Brava and Costa del Sol. The main market for the Balearic Islands continues to be the Germans, accounting for almost 32 per cent of the total, with an average stay of 8.5 days. Last year, 4.1 million German tourists visited the Balearic Islands, 7.6 per cent more than in 2012.

They spent more than €3.73 billion last year in the Balearic Islands which could increase by at least 10 per cent this summer. Reservations are up by between 5 and 10 per cent compared to last year, meaning some 4.4 million German tourists can be expected.

Human contact for tourists PALMA City Hall is considering doing away with computers installed in tourist offices last year in order to improve direct assistance.

The computers were installed so tourists could obtain information on the city’s main monuments.

However, the manager of the Palma de Mallorca 365 Tourism Foundation, Pedro Homar, has said that it would be better for staff at the offices to give them the information in order to maintain human contact with visitors.

He said he will meet with Tourism councillor Alvaro Gijon to decide what to do with the computers, which did not cost the city hall any money as they were provided by a private company linked to Palma Aquarium.

They were paid for by providing a space for local businesses to advertise and offered visitors discounts at those businesses.

If they are eventually kept, Catalan will be included amongst the languages in which the information is provided.

Attempted rape A MAN, 40, is facing six years in prison for attempting to rape a prostitute in Palma in 2010, threatening her with a knife and a screwdriver.

Victim stabbed A MAN is facing 16 years in prison for stabbing his former partner to death in Palma in March 2013. He attempted to kill himself before going to the National Police.

IFTY-EIGHT per cent of Spaniards plan to take a trip over Easter, 5 per cent more than last year.

A survey carried out by travel site TripAdvisor reveals that almost 70 per cent will stay in Spain and that the favourite destination over Easter is Andalucia, followed by Cataluña, Castilla y Leon and Valencia.

Forty-eight per cent say that they seek a cultural holiday, as opposed to 21 per cent who want to spend their free time on the beach. Fiftyfour per cent will be travelling more than 500 kilometres to their destination, and 60 per cent will go by car.

Cathedral bomb threat PALMA Cathedral received a bomb threat by phone.

A man called at around midday saying he had planted a bomb and that the building should be evacuated.

However, the tone of his voice made the recipient suspect it was a joke. The police were called and the building was searched, revealing a lost backpack but no explosives.

Although visitors were surprised to see police in the cathedral there was no panic.

The cathedrals of Leon and Santiago received simultaneous threats, allegedly from the same person, both were evacuated, but police found no explosives there either.

50 years for violent robbers A PALMA court has issued prison sentences amounting to 50 years for five men accused of four armed robberies in

Mallorca in 2012.

They mainly targeted fuel stations and threatened staff when they went in to pay. They then stole the takings, attacking two of staff and seriously injuring one. In one hold-up, they stole €4,000.

Food company changed dates THREE members of a family running a food business in Palma were arrested by National Police for distributing products which has passed their expiry date.

The investigation began when police were informed the business may be violating workers’ rights.

This revealed that management and staff were falsifying expiry dates on products which were distributed to schools and hospitals amongst other places, as well as

the fact foods were being stored in warehouses with no proper hygiene conditions and delivery vehicles were not refrigerated.

They distributed preserved vegetables, fish, pasta, jams and other products.

The premises, located on Son Castello Industrial Estate, were raided and police found blank labels, dissolvent to erase expiry dates, products which had been tampered with, computer equipment and various documents. They have since been closed.

Five Spanish workers have also been charged and claim they agreed to tamper with the dates for fear of losing their jobs. Negligence led to derail A JUDGE in Inca considers that severe negligence led to a train derailing in Sineu in 2010.

The accident occurred when a wall fell on the tracks between Palma, Inca and Manacor.

Thirty people, including the driver, were injured, some seriously.

The judge has requested that the public and private prosecutors present their accusatory statements

before the trial begins.

Eight former heads of the Mallorca Railway Service, engineers and people responsible for building the wall face a possible 33 charges of bodily harm.

Experts investigating the case claim there were no emergency or maintenance works carried out on the wall prior to the accident occurring.

This may have contributed towards the accident.

Man arrested for art extortion A MAN, 58, was arrested in Palma for allegedly stealing a painting by Manuel Hernandez Mompo worth â‚Ź20,000.

He was allegedly demanding money from the owner of the painting, who had given it to him to sell. The victim alerted the Guardia Civil and agreed to meet with the extortionist.

An operation was set up which resulted in the man’s arrest and the recovery of another painting, which Guardia Civil believe could be a fake.

The detainee, who is suspected of other crimes, was demanding that the victim who had sold it to him buy it back for â‚Ź20,000, in order to recover the painting he had taken without permission.

Better paediatric care approved for Inca Regional Hospital HEALTH councillor Andreu Gili announced at a council meeting that there will be an extra paediatrician on call at Inca Regional Hospital on weekends and holidays.

Overhaul for roads on island THE regional government will resurface several roads in Serra de Tramuntana area thanks to an investment of €16 million.

They include roads in Manacor-Sant Llorenç; Son Servera-Arta, CamposSantanyi, Inca-Lloseta and Cami Conies in Manacor, which will be provided with dry stone walls and have wooden safety barriers installed. There will also be work on the Albercutx o sa Creueta viewpoint in Formentor, and the creation of a 310-metre road to make the Cami Vell de Lluc at Coll de sa Batalla safer.

Resurfacing will also be carried out on these roads: Selva-Moscari-Campanet; Pollença-Biniali; Palmanyola-Soller; Sineu-Muro; Cap de Formentor, the Tolleric urbanisation road and Ma-10 road in Escorça.

Work to prevent landslides between Andratx and Estellencs will also be done.

He also said that the ordinary service throughout the week will be increased to two paediatricians until 10pm.

The proposals were approved by the council.

The ultimate sacrifice T

WO stories that hit the UK national press sum up the differing images of the Brit abroad.

One summed up the boozy tourist after sun and sangria and a ‘good time’ at all costs that brings a shudder down many an expatriate’s spine.

The other was a family tragedy that showed two mums making the ultimate sacrifice to save their beloved children from the sea.

In one, a bride-to-be didn’t even make it as far as Spain for her hen party before getting into trouble. She ended up fighting with one of her bridesmaids on the flight over.

That showed a lack of respect not just for her, now presumably exfriend, but also a total disregard for fellow passengers.

A selfish unwillingness to recognise the upset,

distress and even fear they may have suffered as she pursued her own agenda.

On the other hand, two British mothers drowned as they tried to rescue their children from the sea off a Tenerife beach. The two women, believed to be from the same extended family, were pulled from the water but could not be revived.

The children survived the ordeal.

So on one hand we have a selfish troublemaker, on the other two women who were totally selfless to the extent of losing their lives.

Let us hope that the bride-to-be learns some humility, and regard for other people. Should she have children maybe she will understand why some people are willing to give up their lives for the people they love.

Man jailed after fight A MAN has accepted three years in prison for leaving another blind in one eye by hitting him with a bar stool during a fight in Palma.

The events took place in a disco in Cala Major in February last year, when the accused threw the stool in the other man’s face.

The man was arrested last April, and faced eight years in prison, but claimed that when they both grabbed the stool it hit the victim accidentally.

However, his lawyer reached an agreement with the prosecutor, who reduced the sentence to

Health care professionals rewarded INCA and Manacor Hospitals and the Rafa Nadal Foundation were given the Sanitaria 2000 award.

They were handed out by the Balearic Government and are in recognition of the work of health care professionals on the islands over the past year.

The President, Jose Ramon Bauza, said that they “value the involvement and effort of these professionals to improve and promote health every day.�

He pointed out that there are seven hospitals, 57 health centres and 104 health care units on the islands, all belonging to the state health system, as well as many private centres, all of which provide quality care for patients thanks to the people who work in them.

Balearics abuse statistics MORE than 4,370 women in the Balearic Islands reported they had been the victims of gender violence in 2013, the highest rate in Spain.

Two women were killed by their partners in Palma and Arta. In the whole of Spain, there were 124,894 reports of gender violence, 15,300 of which

were later retracted.

54 women lost their lives at the hands of their partners. Of these cases, 11 had never reported violence before.

employees assigned to tracking down fiscal fraud.

A further 210 will be assigned to local administrations as town hall auditors and a ‘significant’ number will fill vacancies within national administrative bodies.

While the creation of 950 new jobs is encouraging this does little to balance the 374,000 posts lost in public administration over the last two years, said the UGT trade union.

by Montoro’s announcement, sources claimed, as they were already in conversations with the government regarding the new jobs.

Its supervisor Elvira Rodriguez, who took over in October 2012, called recently for more autonomy regarding both operations and sanctions.

The CNMV, created 25 years ago, is not dependent on taxpayers’ money but

generates its own income and is a money-maker. In 2012, the last year with available figures, the regulator made a profit of €7.4 million, 70 per cent of which went into government coffers.

This year new regulations controlling levies come into force and the CNMV is expected to earn €46.7 million, Rodriguez revealed at a recent forum.

Cuts affect Spaniards abroad STEPS taken by Germany and Belgium to protect their benefits system are affecting Spanish immigrants.

The measures were introduced to stem the flood of Romanian and Bulgarian immigrants once restrictions were lifted last January, but there are currently 6,592 Spanish immigrant workers in Germany who are now jobless.

Finding work is less easy than it looks, said Silvia Nuñez , who has a degree in English and recently returned to Spain. “It depends on your profession and if your German is good.”

Belgium is already cutting benefits to immigrants it considers to be a drain on the system. Last year it stopped benefits to 2,712 EU citizens of whom 323 were Spanish. After Romanians and Bulgarians they are the most-affected by the country’s new regulations.

Tax agency digs for fraud SPAIN’S tax collection body, the AEAT agency is planning a two-pronged attack.

Now that tax declarations are due, the agency will home in on online commerce which now moves €10.6 billion a year, said AEAT’s director general Santiago Menendez.

The agency has also been authorised to check the computers of small and medium businesses for ‘Caja B’ black money camouflaged by double accounting.

E-commerce can look forward to ‘far-reaching control’ with the participation of AEAT’s crack group Onif, renowned for locating fiscal fraud, promised the authority’s director general Santiago Menendez.

“AEAT is facing new forms of fraud because the internet facilitates totally submerged activities,” claims the text of the agency’s control programme.

“Others appear to be foreign but are in fact Spanish

ONLINE COMMERCE: Computers to be checked. companies using the internet to avoid their tax obligations.”

The agency will use information circulating on the internet to piece together information on taxpayers to determine whether or not they are involved in undeclared commercial activities.

Tax inspectors will monitor how many visits to a web page result in sales, Menendez explained. They will also check

whether tax is paid on earnings from advertisers who pay to appear on websites.

Manufacturers who sell their products on the internet will come under scrutiny to ensure that they pay ‘adequate’ tax in Spain, the director general revealed.

Specialist AEAT staff will also examine computers to detect possible manipulation of accounts sheets, double accounting or partial concealment of a company’s activities.

Yet more inspectors will visit firms and shops to check that no payments of more than €2,500 have been received in cash.

And, as always, AEAT’s hitmen and women will continue to home in on taxpayers whose ‘external signs of wealth’ do not correspond to their tax declarations or declarations of personal assets.

ENERGY BILLS: Households are struggling to pay.

Energy poor Spain A GROWING number of energy-poor Spaniards cannot maintain their homes at an adequate temperature.

A household is classed as energy or fuel poor when a family cannot meet the cost of basic energy needs or when it must allocate an excessive proportion of the family income to pay its energy bills.

People with energy problems have increased by 50 per cent since 2008, found ‘Fuel poverty in Spain,’ a study by Spain’s Association of Environmental Sciences (ACA).

The preliminary results suggest that the most significant increase in energy poverty occurred

between 2010 and 2012.

The study revealed that 10 per cent of Spanish households - approximately 4 million people - are now energy poor, with one out of every three families affected by unemployment experiencing fuel poverty.

Those on pensions or living in rural and underpopulated areas are also at risk.

Energy poverty is a contributing factor to between 2,300 and 9,300 premature deaths in Spain each year.

Energy-efficient buildings, fighting climate change and reducing the European Union’s energy dependence are amongst solutions to the problem.

FOR those fortunate enough to be employed, a salary thankfully lands in the bank account each month, but despite concerns about bills, mortgage payments and future costs, most people or households are not very good at keeping track of this money.

A new report hailing from the US has revealed that when it comes to being smart about money and making sure to tie up loose financial ends, many adults are failing miserably.

And the same rings true for grown-ups all over the world.

Thirty four per cent of

those surveyed admitted that they constantly carry month-to-month credit card debt. It’s so easy to just stick a cost on your credit card and tell yourself that you’ll pay it off at the end of the month.

But in reality other costs always creep up and all that good intention to pay off credit card debt ultimately gets postponed.

Which tragically for your savings results in paying lots of hard earned money purely on interest.

But you’re not alone making these financial mistakes, almost half of those questioned would grade themselves a ‘C’ or lower when it comes to financial know-how, while 61 per cent of adults don’t even have a budget.

Public housing is not so available THE Department of Development and Housing of the Junta de Andalucia regional government (CFVJA) has opened files on eight different financial entities which possess VPO properties (council housing) and are not handing them over to the relevant councils.

According to sources within the Junta, the law that regulates social housing establishes the obligation of the financial entities to communicate to the CFVJA an inventory of all available public housing in the province; only about 20 of them have done this.

The CFVJA has confirmed that there are at least eight financial entities in Andalucia, among which are some of the country’s main banks, which have not made this information available.

Not putting housing which has been built with public money at the disposition of the public is a serious legal infraction and the financial entities could be fined between €30,000 and €120,000

I went to the town council, but A. Perhaps you should start with your Community of Owners. Has the Community authorised the installation of the solar panels? The panels clearly alter the exterior appearance of the building, just as enclosed terraces do, and so they should require the approval of the Community.

Bring the situation to the attention of your Community President. Even if the panels are not attractive and even if they cut off your light and view, these unfortunately are not legal grounds to remove them.

Simply figure out your monthly net pay and from there calculate all your major expenses - rent, bills, the gym, debt payments etc. Subtract them from your take-home pay to see how much money you have left to work with.

This will leave you with a better idea of how and where to spend the remainder of your money and see what your average daily spending should amount to, rather than just spending blindly until you’re left in the red again.

There are also loads of free apps to download to help you plan and track. So no excuse, get cracking!

Amnesty solution for Spain’s homes problem ONCE again there has been much in the press about property problems in Spain. Some has even been positive with perhaps a solution to the legalisation issue on the horizon. A simple solution is an amnesty, with all houses built before a certain date to be made legal and all future planning to go through a specialist department and not the town halls. Local council officials and mayors of all parties are now in agreement that there needs to be an amendment to the Decree.

Surely now, someone in the Junta de Andalucia will listen.

The Junta must realise that if the houses were made legal this would boost the economy. Homes would be improved, giving work to the hundreds of builders who are currently unemployed.

Houses would be put on the market for sale, which would not only bring in taxes but new furniture and cars would be purchased, giving a further boost to employment.

People would no longer have to find legal fees and be constantly worried about what will happen next. They would be able to relax and enjoy life and spend more in local shops and restaurants.

Town halls, instead of concentrating on legality issues, could instead concentrate their efforts on improving their towns and facilities, taking care of people and creating more employment.

We are currently running a paper petition requesting an amnesty for all property built before 2008 and have gathered over 1,000 signatures locally.

Weekly News that the Andalucian regional government plans to hire ‘cheap’ interpreters. Great news for the Junta’s coffers, but not so much for anyone involved in a legal process who requires an interpreter.

Those currently providing the service in Malaga have university degrees in translation and interpreting and extensive knowledge of legal matters. Why should they be put out of work by mediocre counterparts willing to accept a pittance?

Despite what many people may think, a knowledge of languages does not provide sufficient skill for translation or interpreting.

Acquiring those skills takes time and effort. Junta officials are obviously not among those aware of the importance of accuracy in translation, especially in medical and legal matters.

It is disgusting that Spain’s Criminal Procedure Act allows anyone with knowledge of languages to act as an interpreter, and also how many so-called translators/interpreters there are offering their services who are unqualified. People should stop and think of the consequences which a small misinterpretation could lead to, then maybe they wouldn’t underrate the skills of

Hard lines PERPLEXED is quite mistaken in attributing Knackebrod to Germany! This type of hard bread, made mostly of rye flour, is actually of Swedish origin. It has been baked in Sweden from around 500 AD. Roughly translated it means bread that is easy to crack.

Originally considered as poor men’s food it is now considered as a healthy alternative with more dietary fibre.

You will find Knackebrod in 85 per cent of Swedish homes, in Germany in 45 per cent and in France only 8 per cent. I do not know about the UK or Spain.

IF it’s paranoid to go on harping on about the same things week after week, without producing any evidence to support them then I’m afraid, dear Leapy, paranoid is what you are!

Week after week we get told how criminals are getting off scot free, how Islamic bigots are ruling the roost, and Britain’s towns are overrun with immigrants.

Yet all that Leapy is really saying is that a lot of people think this is so. He never makes any effort to find out whether they are right in thinking so or not. In fact, whenever any serious attempt is made to check on whether, for example, an unusual number of criminals are getting off, if immigrant numbers make any serious difference to other people’s work prospects, or most British Moslems are influenced by bigots, the result is always that the alleged problem has been enormously exaggerated.

In any democratic country things can happen which we may not like, but to twist the law to make sure they cannot happen would mean removing safeguards we would sadly miss. Freedom of movement is something we all think we should enjoy. A fair trial is what we expect to have if we are accused. Leapy’s articles only make it harder for British people to live in the real world.

He would do better to tell us how to adapt to a society with a lot of foreigners in it, and to learn a bit about how they live and why they have left their birthplaces and come to Britain.

Don’t look!

WHEN I drive into town I frequently see learner drivers waiting for their instructors. On most occasions they are having a nice cosy chat over a cup of coffee and brandy (methinks) in the bar next door. I say “methinks” as they come out, fags in hands and a bit doddery.

It amazes me just how many of these instructors actually know how to drive themselves. They don’t even tell the learners to use their indicators and just pull out without using a rear view mirror.

Oh, I forgot they don’t have to do that here. I was taught “mirror, signal, manoeuvre,” not just “manoeuvre.”

Cinderella law is a step too far

O

VER the years I’ve often come out against interference in our lives by the so-called Nanny State - but this most recent Cinderella law codswallop really does make my blood boil.

Who are these faceless people using taxpayers’ money to come up with such pure unmitigated nonsense?

Certainly not parents, that’s for sure. How dare they encourage youngsters to grass up their parents every time they think they’ve been hard done by, it’s bordering on Hitlerism. Under the proposed law parents could be jailed for ‘emotional cruelty.’

As a father of six I dread to think how many times I could have been reported by disgruntled little offspring not happy or having their noses put out by some disciplinary decision or another. The

If they were encouraged by these out of touch lunatics to report you to the authorities, at this point they would happily report you to the hangman.

Don’t they realise that nine times out of 10 within a few hours they have their arms around your neck and are telling you they are sorry and how much they love you?

How are they going to enforce this law? Send a raiding squad of plod down to the family home to arrest some harassed parent making the family’s Sunday dinner after they’ve had an altercation because they

couldn’t get the children out of bed?

Give us a break! Can you imagine the domestic chaos that would ensue with mum down the nick and the vegetables boiling over? No, what these people should be doing is sorting out their own departments. Instead of trying to sidetrack us all with these ridiculous red herrings

they should be investigating the monotonous regularity with which babies and toddlers are somehow ‘slipping through the net’ and dying under horrendous conditions.

Yet another tot killed this week by a monster that local welfare workers somehow managed to let ‘slip under the radar’. Throwing rocks in

glasshouses comes to mind!

The social services are in a disgraceful state. Most of its workers are unmarried and without families, simply because there is no time to do both.

I always get the faint aroma of sour grapes when these lunatic directives emanate from their organisations. No, get your own houses in order before you start sending the SWAT teams into ours.

Well my little stint in the Tenerife sunshine will soon be over. Once again I’ve had a great winter with some truly terrific folk. Thanks a bunch, everyone. See you all next year. Can’t wait to get home, mind. Six months is too long away from the children. Sure hope they don’t hate me for it!

UCKY you’ are words that generally follow when telling people I live in Spain.

This may indeed be the case - I do love the sun and the great outdoors are as described on the tin. Still, there are times I seriously consider packing my bags and heading for pastures new. My main niggles with Spain are the widespread corruption and the absence of welcome from authorities, who penalise those that play by the rules, because they are easier targets than those who flaunt them.

They say the world is your oyster - but is it really? I've had a quick look at what other expat havens have to offer: First of all, Europe is out - the mid-to-northern part due to

Secondly, you can forget about notions of the Cayman Islands or Bermuda - they demand a sizeable upfront cost of entering, backed by hefty bank accounts, private medical insurance. Even then you will probably suffer with island fever as well as culture

withdrawal symptoms before long. Meanwhile, Singapore ticks all boxes but one: It is the most expensive country in the world.

Unless you are a Russian Oligarch or Spanish Politician, strike the above off your list.

So, how about the land of the free? The great US of A. Well, it is true they have lessened entry requirements and I believe a medium-sized property purchase

will suffice to gain access, again if you do not have to rely on any state benefits. But, be certain in your decision because they have a right to tax you for 12 years after you leave the country. And they do love their guns…

Jump to Japan for wonderful cuisine, a lovely climate as well as extremely kind and considerate people. But you will have to pack a Geiger counter as well as an

earthquake emergency kit, so life in the land of the rising sun could have a serious impact on your health.

Australia has also lowered their immigration criteria, but it is a world away and there is a good reason why they film ‘I’m a Celebrity, Get me out of here,’ over there: Creepy crawlies abound and are probably the only creatures to survive the many bush fires.

Then there is Dubai - holiday home to footballers everywhere.

It certainly trumps Spain in the sun stakes, perhaps ‘demasiado’ so for those with delicate skin.

There is a vibrant expat community, with Starbucks at every corner, but at the end of the day, you may be thrown in jail for kissing your spouse in public.

Culturally, maybe one step too far.

Which leads us right back to Spain. The best option would be that corruption was somehow stamped out and expats, bringing investment to the country, would be welcomed with open arms rather than painful hoops at every opportunity. Here’s hoping.

By Dick Handscombe Spain’s best known expat gardening author about to start his 26th winter cut back.

THE first edition of our book Your Garden in Spain had the subtitle ‘Practical ideas for gardens that suit your Spanish lifestyle’.

It was a 335-page book that included large sections on the growing of fruit and vegetables, flowering plants and trees, plus garden design and maintenance.

We were matching the needs of our publishers for a large book to replace a long-standing but outdated book titled Gardening in Spain.

The book sold well but the original publishers sold out and the new owners indicated that three smaller books - Your

Garden in Spain, Growing Healthy Fruit in Spain and Growing Healthy Vegetables - would better meet their needs.

So it was back to the drawing board or computer and, being Spain, a lost summer with no royalty advance. But we did include our favourite Spanish recipes for cooking fruit and vegetable dishes to hold the books above competitors. For the book, we needed to be more accurate, so for months we weighed every ingredient for the descriptions and took photographs of finished dishes.

But frustratingly, just before publication, the recipes were cut out to save costs.

However, the cut material was not lost and by autumn a new book

They talk about the concept of lifestyle-driven gardens that can create ‘attractive and productive outdoor homes surrounding or supplementing a house or apartment’. This is not playing with words for the big opportunity of living in Spain. Perhaps in reality the only one compared

with living in northern Europe, is being able to live outside for much of the day and night throughout most of the year, in private, peaceful, colourful and scented spaces.

The benefits of grooming

GROOMING is a pleasurable social activity among wild dogs carried out by mutual licking. Primates engage in intense bouts of hair care and flea picking and horses love to nibble each others’ manes and backs.

Grooming is, therefore, an important behavioural interaction between man and dog. In return, dogs will groom us by licking our hands and exposed skin.

Check and handle the ears, eyes, teeth, and nails. All dogs need grooming, some more than others. Generally, the longer the hair, the more frequently the grooming will be required. Introduce the brush and comb as a pleasant experience while the dog is still a puppy for short but frequent periods.

It’s great to feel challenged. It wakes us up and makes us feel alive. But there is a fine line between a challenge and not listening to your body.

I believe it’s worth taking some time to see a professional to gauge what condition you are in.

Then you can think about what you would like to do.

It may even be that you would just like to feel a little more confident in your body on the beach.

And why not?

Over the years I have taught yoga classes where people are literally attacking the postures. It’s as if they are punishing themselves because it’s ingrained in us to ‘do more to be more’.

Unfortunately it is exactly this attitude, coupled with not approaching our physical regime in steps and stages, that will often reap the ill rewards of us having to stop exercising because of injury, before we barely get off the starting line.

For example, you sit at a desk for eight hours a day, are fairly fit and really keen to take up cycling. Your hips are closed at the front most of the day, your back rounded, your hamstrings are tight, your neck hooked and your shoulders rounded with your chest closed, but after sitting around all day you can’t wait to get on your bike, blow the cobwebs off and release that energy.

Perfect, except that you ywill be encouraging your body to tighten up and become stronger and shorter in all the places you are already feeling tension,.

Then before you know it -

BAM! - injury strikes.

Avoid the injuries by choosing activities which encourage movement in the opposite direction to your regular habits. If you haven’t been exercising for a while, build up your fitness plan slowly and take your time. You will be rewarded with consistent progress and steady injury-free movement, without the frustrating time out.

If you are taking part in group classes, be sure to let the instructor or teacher know of any injuries, and if you get a blank look get out of there fast. Don’t copy other people in the class and listen to your own body, as it will never lie to you.

And lastly, if you are already injured or suffering pain, seek help. Try and balance the body through some form of corrective movement programme before you start asking it to do things which could cause serious strain.

I would never say don't exercise, even if we have an injury, just be sure to exercise your mind as well.

Medicinal Tequila plant THE plant from which Tequila is extracted, Agave tequilana, could be used in the treatment of diabetics and the obese.

Mercedes Lopez, of the Biotechnology and Advanced Studies Centre, in Guanajuato, Mexico, has commented that the agave tequilana reduces the levels of glucose and raises the levels of GLP-1 which, in turn, raises the amount of insulin in the blood.

GLP-1 is a hormone that slows the stomach’s digestion and stimulates the production of insulin.

Experts from the American Society of Chemistry have commented that using agave tequilana, they could make an artificial sweetener which would reduce the glucose levels of sufferers of type 2 diabetes and contribute to weight loss in obese people.

WHAT is SEPA? The Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) is making euro payments faster, safer and more efficient within the 34 EU countries. It enables customers to make cashless euro payments to anyone within the EU. What are the ways to pay using SEPA? 1. Campbell’s seminal act of British daring and endeavour, this latest creation by the marque’s Bespoke department takes inspiration from the Bluebird craft in which the records were set.

A specially created exterior finish named Maggiore Blue takes its name from the lake on the Swiss-Italian border where Campbell broke the United States’ five year stranglehold on the waterspeed records in 1937. This very special collection also pays homage to a period when the Rolls-Royce R engine held speed records on land, water and in the air.

Donald and Joe enjoyed a walk through the manufacturing plant with Bespoke designer Alex Innes before reviewing the specially commissioned car.

On seeing the collection car, Donald, himself a record breaker, said: “I have no doubt that my grandfather Sir Malcolm Campbell would feel extremely proud to see his achievements honoured in this way.

“The Waterspeed car is a work of art; the blue and brushed steel evoke connotations of my grandfather’s World Record boats, Bluebird K3 and K4.

“This car is a lovely addition to the Rolls-Royce collection and a fabulous homage to a very important part of our racing heritage.”

Expansion for Palma International Boat Show 2014 which starts April 30

OLLOWING a recordbreaking 2013, organisers of the 31st edition of the Palma International Boat Show have expanded exhibition space both on land and in water to create ‘probably the most successful boat show in the last five years.’ The Show runs from April 30 to May 4.

Guy Norrish from longterm exhibitor Marina Estrella, comments, “Following a 2012 hiatus,

the comeback 2013 Palma International Boat Show was a real hit.

The new format of fewer days, better opening times, more boats on the water and reasonable ticket prices suited both exhibitors and visitors. Marina Estrella closed the Show with confirmed sales of over two million euros, including the first of the innovative Azimut 55S to reach the Balearics, and more followed, so we are looking forward to a good show in 2014.”

Indeed, due to the Boat Show’s expansion, Marina Estrella will be relocated for the first time since the very first edition it attended in 1984, some 30 years ago. The Palma Superyacht Show, which now runs alongside the

By Lynda Demangeat EL TORO RC stood up to the pressure and aggression shown by their opponents Ibiza RC at the weekend to win the playoff for the final of the Baleares Senior League.

The final match between top of the League, El Toro RC and second placed Ibiza RC began in front of packed stands on a sunny afternoon. Both teams started

strongly and were determined to make their mark early on in the match.

A good passing sequence, kick through the opposition and quick thinking gave Sergio Doitzua the first try for El Toro RC after only five minutes. The conversion hit the post but the points gave the home team a psychological advantage.

Ibiza RC kept applying the pressure and after two try attempts were held up

by El Toro RC, finally got the ball over the line. The conversion kick was successful which put them ahead by 5 points to 7.

There was plenty of movement up and down the pitch with both teams working hard to maintain control of the ball. A second try for El Toro RC came from a scrum with the ball passed across the field and Sergio Doitzua put down over the line for his second

try of the match. A clean conversion took the score to 12 points to 7. A penalty kick gave El Toro RC another three points and they efficiently held up another try to deny Ibiza RC five points.

The second half began with a penalty kick for El Toro RC, Fernando Etchegaray made it look easy. Consistently accurate line-outs gave El Toro RC the edge and made possible a great run down the field for Alex Pages who put the ball down under the posts for another conversion and seven more points on the score board.

A penalty kick added three further points. Ibiza RC realised they had no
