50,000 expected for beach music festival UP to 50,000 visitors are expected to descend on a seaside resort for the Axarquia’s biggest beach party.

In July, Torre del Mar in Velez Malaga will host the Weekend Beach Festival.

Between 20,000 and 50,000 visitors from all over the country are expected to attend the

event, which will take place between July 3 and 5. The festival will open its doors at 7pm and close at 7am; tickets will go on sale at €25 for just the festival or €35 for camping included.

Eviction of Dolores on hold THE eviction of Dolores Ruiz has been put on hold due to a lack of police support and to protect the Motril court officials, Dolores, 73, has lived in the same house since she was born and, although some family members have known about the eviction for some time, she only found out about it a few days before she was due to be ousted.

She is being evicted by her own two sons from whom she has been estranged for three years.

They bought the house from her and, instead of giving her the purchase price, they allowed her to continue living there. But now they are claiming that she has not paid her rent and, as such, must go.

She blames the estrangement of her sons on her ex-husband with whom she has a difficult relationship.

Each entrant can present a maximum of two designs at the Casa de la Juventud in Arco del Cine Street before the May 19. All work must be original and accompanied by contact details. First prize is €1,000.

FINES: Traffic department controls in the Axarquia campaign.

161 drivers fined in only four days

ONE HUNDRED AND SIX drivers have been fined for speeding in only four days in the DGT’s (traffic department) Axarquia speeding campaign.

A total of 3,598 vehicles were stopped in the flash DGT control in which 4.47 per cent of the total were fined.

Malaga was quick to point out that this four-day traffic control campaign was being carried out in many of the Axarquia towns and it was not simply a plan to gather money to line the council’s coffers.

The controls were situated on two central avenues where the limits are 50 kilometres per hour

and the radars were set up to catch any vehicle going over 70 kph.

Bonilla underscored the fact that the DGT were only interested in catching speeders going well over the limit, not the ones who were just slightly over it.

The campaign has been declared a success by the council and the DGT.

NEWS Roundabout woes THE works on the roundabout just outside Salobreña have been stopped for over a year and, although questions about their continuance have been posed repeatedly, no explanations have been given by the council.

Revitalising Motril THE PSOE has asked Motril Council to revitalise the town centre. The socialist party said that with so many businesses closed it looks down at heel.

Nerja crime wave denied AFTER an article was published in a local newspaper about a crime wave in Nerja, in which it was stated that many local businesses had been robbed, the council of Nerja has denied the claim.

The Guardia Civil has confirmed that the robberies referred to in the article all happened in Frigiliana and the only incident in Nerja was the robbery of a perfume shop.

Although the Guardia Civil did not comment on this, sources close to the owners of the perfume

shop said the thieves got away with a haul worth €90,000.

Angela Diaz, president of the Business Association of Nerja (AEN) says that the AEN has no knowledge of any robberies in any of their associated businesses.

She goes on to state that they are in close contact with the Guardia Civil through their various campaigns against robberies and they have not heard from either side about the crime wave.

Half marathon NERJA man Ricardo Hidalgo, ex-leukaemia sufferer, has run the Malaga half marathon to raise money for the Josep Carreras foundation to fight leukaemia.

IFTY-EIGHT per cent of Spaniards plan to take a trip over Easter, 5 per cent more than last year.

A survey carried out by travel site TripAdvisor reveals that almost 70 per cent will stay in Spain and that the favourite destination over Easter is Andalucia, followed by Cataluña, Castilla y Leon and Valencia.

Forty-eight per cent say that they seek a cultural holiday, as opposed to 21 per cent who want to spend their free time on the beach. Fiftyfour per cent will be travelling more than 500 kilometres to their destination, and 60 per cent will go by car.

Hero of Tenerife deaths tragedy

By Colin Kirby in Tenerife LIFE is precious, no one knows that better than Adam Cramer. He took his three children on holiday to Playa Paraiso, Tenerife to recover, four months after having a five-kilo tumour removed from his abdomen.

So when he saw a young girl in a family group swept into the sea by a big wave, he dived in to save her. A young boy and two adults from related familes were saved as well, but two female British doctors died.

“I just thought what if that was one of my children,” the chartered accountant from London said. It happened just after 6pm on Sunday April 6, just around the rocky coast from raw shingle beach El Pinque. A sea swimmer on regular visits to the nearby Roca Nivaria Hotel, Adam timed his moment right.

The seminar, given by sub tropical fruit specialist Ignacio Escobar, head of La Nacla farm, was mainly concerned with the growing of mangoes and avocados, which are a big cash crop for the area and require special attention to detail in their cultivation.

She was very brave and kept talking to me and thanking me all the time.

The two women who died have been identified as Barathi Ravikumar, a GP at Bracebridge Heath health centre in Lincoln, and Uma Ramalingham a consultant obstetrician at the Royal Oldham Hospital in Greater Manchester.

The group were all staying at a local villa and had been on an outcrop of rocks a short distance from the Adeje 300 coastal promenade that links Playa Paraiso with Callao Salvaje.

When the alert was raised Adam’s children Jasmine, 12, Isabella, 11, and Benji, 8, were in the hotel pool.

He ran the few yards from the complex to the promenade.

“People were shocked but not sure what to do.

After I went in, the police arrived and then a while after the rescue services and a helicopter. One lady was winched up but the other was attended to on the sharp rocks.”

Part of the attraction of the west coast area is its rugged beauty and many people go out on the rocks to fish or to take photos. At 8pm the following evening, despite it being dusk, several people including families had taken the adventurous risk. El Pinque beach and the area near the rocks where the tragedy happened both have large warning signs, which state there are no lifeguards on duty.

CHORIZO: Hot as Hell.

Tourists burnt by hot chorizo go home TWO Dutch tourists who were burnt by a plate of ‘Hell’s chorizo’ (flambéed chorizo) have been transported back to Holland to continue their recovery in a Dutch hospital.

The two tourists, who suffered second degree burns, have gone home after staying for several days in the burns unit at the Malaga regional hospital of the Axarquia.

The pair, a man of 51 and a woman of 48, were on holiday in the Malaga region when

after ordering a plate of flambéed chorizo in a Nerja restaurant, they noticed it was not hot enough and asked for more alcohol for the burner; this then blew up.

An ambulance took them to the hospital where they were transferred to the burns unit due to the seriousness of their injuries.

They burnt a total of 20 per cent of their bodies including their shoulders, faces, hands and chests.

Parishioners can’t understand priest THE church in the Axarquia village of Cajiz was closed because the parishioners say they can’t understand the Romanian priest.

Sergiu Antal, the priest, doesn’t speak much Spanish and residents in the small district of VelezMalaga said the Malaga Bishopric should have paid for him to have lessons before sending him to an area with so many elderly parishioners.

Traditionally, the upkeep of the parish church has been carried out by the townspeople, who decided to close the church, but it was later agreed at a meeting to reopen it for Easter, as the town’s representation of the Passion of Christ is thought to be the oldest in Andalucia. The priest has also reportedly promised to learn Spanish.

Rambling to Sacramonte THE Almuñecar ramblers club has walked the route from the north face of the Sierra Nevada to Sacramonte.

More than 50 ramblers enjoyed a windless, cloudless day out to enjoy the magnificent views and walks over the north face of the Sierra Nevada through the Picon de Jerez ending up in the Cerro del Caballo.

Enrique Garin, from the municipal sports board, guided and coordinated the ramble,

along the right-hand bank of the Doro River, with the help of Francisco Novo.

Garin commented that the ‘cherry on the cake’ was the lunch they ate at the abbey in Sacramonte followed by a walk through the caves which ended in the Granada Albaicin.

The next ramble is planned for April 20 and the route will be from the reservoir in Los Bermejales to Jayena. All will be welcome.

Festival of the crosses in La Herradura

MAY CROSS: La Herrradura is preparing itself.

LA HERRADURA will celebrate its May Cross festival on May 1 and the whole town is getting ready.

It entails decorating crosses, usually with seasonal flowers, and preparing a space in which to exhibit them.

Anyone wishing to participate has until April 25 at 2pm to sign up and this year the first prize for the adult competition will be €1,000.

Juan Jose Ruiz Joya, deputy mayor of La Herradura, explained that the crosses can be displayed from midday on May 1 until midnight on May 4.

The jury will visit the crosses on May 2 from 7pm and will take into consideration the natural decoration of the cross, the floral variety used, lighting, setting, gastronomy and originality.

There will be special consideration for any display on the street which adds beauty to the neighbourhood.

Art exhibition in Roquetas de Mar THE Santa Ana castle in Roquetas de Mar will host an exhibition by local painter Agustin Sanchez Garren.

The artist, from Olula del Rio, is due to open the exhibition, entitled Colours, which will show 50 years of work with a total of 104 paintings by this excellent artist.

Garren, born in 1942, first became well known in the 1970s and had his

first solo show in 1971.

Since then his work has been shown in collections and he has participated in many shows, winning several awards in Spain, Paris and New York.

Garren commented that after 50 years with paintbrushes in his hand he is still eager to go out and find new subjects, places and lives to portray on canvas.

Art therapy LA HERRADURA has hosted the second conference of arttherapy and psychology in the Civic Centre. The aim of the conference was to raise public awareness of the benefits of these therapies.

New book MANUEL FERNANDEZ OLVERA, an author from Motril, has presented his first book at the Casa de la Cultura in Almuñecar.

The book is a collection of short stories and was illustrated by local artist Maria Fernandez Martin.

Electoral roll FOREIGNERS who wish to vote in the European Elections must ensure they are on the electoral roll. They can sign up at Nerja Council offices from April 7-14.

Roadworks NERJA Council has announced that it will begin building the pavements on the stretch of road between San Miguel Street and Nueva Street.

Illegal poker game busted AN illegal poker club has been raided in VelezMalaga while they were holding a ‘Texas Hold ‘em’ tournament in which each player had to deposit €30.

When the National Police arrived, there were

six people at the bar and another nine sitting around a poker table playing the game.

The games were usually held at night and frequently had large sums of money on the tables.

Grim figures on domestic abuse IN 2013 only 11 of the 54 people who died as a result of domestic abuse had made an official complaint to the police. OVDG, the National Register of Domestic Abuse, released data for last year, in which there were 124,894 reports, just 10 less than the year before.

The OVDG added that seven out of 10 reports were made by the victims themselves. Last year also saw a 1.2 per cent rise in the number of victims who later retracted their statements, and a rise of 5 per cent in the number of minors reporting abuse. Of the 11 victims who reported abuse, 10 were of Spanish nationality. Of the 54 dead, 40 were Spanish and 14 were foreign.

The provinces of Andalucia, Balearics, Canary Islands and Valencia had the most reports. On average Spain has 342 daily reports of abuse.

The raid happened in the early hours of the morning and police confiscated €1,665, a poker gaming suitcase, three decks of cards and 497 poker chips.

The club was also fined for allowing patrons to consume drugs, not having a claims and complaints form, allowing patrons to smoke inside and not having civil liability insurance.

Statue to a local hero MALAGA Provincial Government has presented the town of Macharaviaya with a sculpture of Bernardo de Galvez.

Galvez, originally from the town, was a hero of the American War of Independence for his decisive victories over the British troops.

The figure was given to the town for

the Malaga Day celebrations which will take place on April 25.

The statue, the work of Malaga sculptor Jaime Pimentel, stands at 1.92 metres and is made of bronze.

It will be displayed in the Matias de Galvez de Macharaviaya square outside the town hall from April 22, three days before the celebrations start.

The ultimate sacrifice T

WO stories that hit the UK national press sum up the differing images of the Brit abroad.

One summed up the boozy tourist after sun and sangria and a ‘good time’ at all costs that brings a shudder down many an expatriate’s spine.

The other was a family tragedy that showed two mums making the ultimate sacrifice to save their beloved children from the sea.

In one, a bride-to-be didn’t even make it as far as Spain for her hen party before getting into trouble. She ended up fighting with one of her bridesmaids on the flight over.

That showed a lack of respect not just for her, now presumably exfriend, but also a total disregard for fellow passengers.

A selfish unwillingness to recognise the upset,

distress and even fear they may have suffered as she pursued her own agenda.

On the other hand, two British mothers drowned as they tried to rescue their children from the sea off a Tenerife beach. The two women, believed to be from the same extended family, were pulled from the water but could not be revived.

The children survived the ordeal.

So on one hand we have a selfish troublemaker, on the other two women who were totally selfless to the extent of losing their lives.

Let us hope that the bride-to-be learns some humility and regard for other people. Should she have children maybe she will understand why some people are willing to give up their lives for the people they love.

Instead of the expected 641 civil service posts the offer has been raised to 950, announced Treasury Minister Cristobal Montoro.

The selection process has been reformed, he confirmed, with experience taken into greater account and equal opportunities for women.

Montoro’s announcement came during the presentation of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) report on Public Administration reform in Spain.

Approximately 238 of the new employees will go to the government’s tax collecting agency AEAT to boost the number of

employees assigned to tracking down fiscal fraud.

A further 210 will be assigned to local administrations as town hall auditors and a ‘significant’ number will fill vacancies within national administrative bodies.

While the creation of 950 new jobs is encouraging this does little to balance the 374,000 posts lost in public administration over the last two years, said the UGT trade union.

by Montoro’s announcement, sources claimed, as they were already in conversations with the government regarding the new jobs.

Stock market regulator profits SPAIN’s stock market regulator the CNMV needs more power to deal with market changes.

Its supervisor Elvira Rodriguez, who took over in October 2012, called recently for more autonomy regarding both operations and sanctions.

The CNMV, created 25 years ago, is not dependent on taxpayers’ money but

generates its own income and is a money-maker. In 2012, the last year with available figures, the regulator made a profit of €7.4 million, 70 per cent of which went into government coffers.

Cuts affect Spaniards abroad STEPS taken by Germany and Belgium to protect their benefits system are affecting Spanish immigrants.

The measures were introduced to stem the flood of Romanian and Bulgarian immigrants once restrictions were lifted last January, but there are currently 6,592 Spanish immigrant workers in Germany who are now jobless.

Finding work is less easy than it looks, said Silvia Nuñez , who has a degree in English and recently returned to Spain. “It depends on your profession and if your German is good.”

Belgium is already cutting benefits to immigrants it considers to be a drain on the system. Last year it stopped benefits to 2,712 EU citizens of whom 323 were Spanish. After Romanians and Bulgarians they are the most-affected by the country’s new regulations.

Tax agency digs for fraud SPAIN’S tax collection body, the AEAT agency is planning a two-pronged attack.

Now that tax declarations are due, the agency will home in on online commerce which now moves €10.6 billion a year, said AEAT’s director general Santiago Menendez.

The agency has also been authorised to check the computers of small and medium businesses for ‘Caja B’ black money camouflaged by double accounting.

E-commerce can look forward to ‘far-reaching control’ with the participation of AEAT’s crack group Onif, renowned for locating fiscal fraud, promised the authority’s director general Santiago Menendez.

“AEAT is facing new forms of fraud because the internet facilitates totally submerged activities,” claims the text of the agency’s control programme.

“Others appear to be foreign but are in fact Spanish

ONLINE COMMERCE: Computers to be checked. companies using the internet to avoid their tax obligations.”

The agency will use information circulating on the internet to piece together information on taxpayers to determine whether or not they are involved in undeclared commercial activities.

Tax inspectors will monitor how many visits to a web page result in sales, Menendez explained. They will also check

whether tax is paid on earnings from advertisers who pay to appear on websites.

Manufacturers who sell their products on the internet will come under scrutiny to ensure that they pay ‘adequate’ tax in Spain, the director general revealed.

Specialist AEAT staff will also examine computers to detect possible manipulation of accounts sheets, double accounting or partial concealment of a company’s activities.

Yet more inspectors will visit firms and shops to check that no payments of more than €2,500 have been received in cash.

And, as always, AEAT’s hitmen and women will continue to home in on taxpayers whose ‘external signs of wealth’ do not correspond to their tax declarations or declarations of personal assets.

ENERGY BILLS: Households are struggling to pay.

Energy poor Spain A GROWING number of energy-poor Spaniards cannot maintain their homes at an adequate temperature.

A household is classed as energy or fuel poor when a family cannot meet the cost of basic energy needs or when it must allocate an excessive proportion of the family income to pay its energy bills.

People with energy problems have increased by 50 per cent since 2008, found ‘Fuel poverty in Spain,’ a study by Spain’s Association of Environmental Sciences (ACA).

The preliminary results suggest that the most significant increase in energy poverty occurred

between 2010 and 2012.

The study revealed that 10 per cent of Spanish households - approximately 4 million people - are now energy poor, with one out of every three families affected by unemployment experiencing fuel poverty.

Those on pensions or living in rural and underpopulated areas are also at risk.

Energy poverty is a contributing factor to between 2,300 and 9,300 premature deaths in Spain each year.

Energy-efficient buildings, fighting climate change and reducing the European Union’s energy dependence are amongst solutions to the problem.

FOR those fortunate enough to be employed, a salary thankfully lands in the bank account each month, but despite concerns about bills, mortgage payments and future costs, most people or households are not very good at keeping track of this money.

A new report hailing from the US has revealed that when it comes to being smart about money and making sure to tie up loose financial ends, many adults are failing miserably.

And the same rings true for grown-ups all over the world.

Thirty four per cent of

those surveyed admitted that they constantly carry month-to-month credit card debt. It’s so easy to just stick a cost on your credit card and tell yourself that you’ll pay it off at the end of the month.

But in reality other costs always creep up and all that good intention to pay off credit card debt ultimately gets postponed.

Which tragically for your savings results in paying lots of hard earned money purely on interest.

But you’re not alone making these financial mistakes, almost half of those questioned would grade themselves a ‘C’ or lower when it comes to financial know-how, while 61 per cent of adults don’t even have a budget.

Public housing is not so available THE Department of Development and Housing of the Junta de Andalucia regional government (CFVJA) has opened files on eight different financial entities which possess VPO properties (council housing) and are not handing them over to the relevant councils.

According to sources within the Junta, the law that regulates social housing establishes the obligation of the financial entities to communicate to the CFVJA an inventory of all available public housing in the province; only about 20 of them have done this.

The CFVJA has confirmed that there are at least eight financial entities in Andalucia, among which are some of the country’s main banks, which have not made this information available.

Not putting housing which has been built with public money at the disposition of the public is a serious legal infraction and the financial entities could be fined between €30,000 and €120,000

I went to the town council, but A. Perhaps you should start with your Community of Owners. Has the Community authorised the installation of the solar panels? The panels clearly alter the exterior appearance of the building, just as enclosed terraces do, and so they should require the approval of the Community.

Bring the situation to the attention of your Community President. Even if the panels are not attractive and even if they cut off your light and view, these unfortunately are not legal grounds to remove them.

Simply figure out your monthly net pay and from there calculate all your major expenses - rent, bills, the gym, debt payments etc. Subtract them from your take-home pay to see how much money you have left to work with.

This will leave you with a better idea of how and where to spend the remainder of your money and see what your average daily spending should amount to, rather than just spending blindly until you’re left in the red again.

There are also loads of free apps to download to help you plan and track. So no excuse, get cracking!

Amnesty solution for Spain’s homes problem ONCE again there has been much in the press about property problems in Spain. Some has even been positive with perhaps a solution to the legalisation issue on the horizon. A simple solution is an amnesty, with all houses built before a certain date to be made legal and all future planning to go through a specialist department and not the town halls. Local council officials and mayors of all parties are now in agreement that there needs to be an amendment to the Decree.

Surely now, someone in the Junta de Andalucia will listen.

The Junta must realise that if the houses were made legal this would boost the economy. Homes would be improved, giving work to the hundreds of builders who are currently unemployed.

Houses would be put on the market for sale, which would not only bring in taxes but new furniture and cars would be purchased, giving a further boost to employment.

People would no longer have to find legal fees and be constantly worried about what will happen next. They would be able to relax and enjoy life and spend more in local shops and restaurants.

Town halls, instead of concentrating on legality issues, could instead concentrate their efforts on improving their towns and facilities, taking care of people and creating more employment.

We are currently running a paper petition requesting an amnesty for all property built before 2008 and have gathered over 1,000 signatures locally.

Weekly News that the Andalucian regional government plans to hire ‘cheap’ interpreters. Great news for the Junta’s coffers, but not so much for anyone involved in a legal process who requires an interpreter.

Those currently providing the service in Malaga have university degrees in translation and interpreting and extensive knowledge of legal matters. Why should they be put out of work by mediocre counterparts willing to accept a pittance?

Despite what many people may think, a knowledge of languages does not provide sufficient skill for translation or interpreting.

Acquiring those skills takes time and effort. Junta officials are obviously not among those aware of the importance of accuracy in translation, especially in medical and legal matters.

It is disgusting that Spain’s Criminal Procedure Act allows anyone with knowledge of languages to act as an interpreter, and also how many so-called translators/interpreters there are offering their services who are unqualified. People should stop and think of the consequences which a small misinterpretation could lead to, then maybe they wouldn’t underrate the skills of

Hard lines PERPLEXED is quite mistaken in attributing Knackebrod to Germany! This type of hard bread, made mostly of rye flour, is actually of Swedish origin. It has been baked in Sweden from around 500 AD. Roughly translated it means bread that is easy to crack.

Originally considered as poor men’s food it is now considered as a healthy alternative with more dietary fibre.

You will find Knackebrod in 85 per cent of Swedish homes, in Germany in 45 per cent and in France only 8 per cent. I do not know about the UK or Spain.

IF it’s paranoid to go on harping on about the same things week after week, without producing any evidence to support them then I’m afraid, dear Leapy, paranoid is what you are!

Week after week we get told how criminals are getting off scot free, how Islamic bigots are ruling the roost, and Britain’s towns are overrun with immigrants.

Yet all that Leapy is really saying is that a lot of people think this is so. He never makes any effort to find out whether they are right in thinking so or not. In fact, whenever any serious attempt is made to check on whether, for example, an unusual number of criminals are getting off, if immigrant numbers make any serious difference to other people’s work prospects, or most British Moslems are influenced by bigots, the result is always that the alleged problem has been enormously exaggerated.

In any democratic country things can happen which we may not like, but to twist the law to make sure they cannot happen would mean removing safeguards we would sadly miss. Freedom of movement is something we all think we should enjoy. A fair trial is what we expect to have if we are accused. Leapy’s articles only make it harder for British people to live in the real world.

He would do better to tell us how to adapt to a society with a lot of foreigners in it, and to learn a bit about how they live and why they have left their birthplaces and come to Britain.

Don’t look!

WHEN I drive into town I frequently see learner drivers waiting for their instructors. On most occasions they are having a nice cosy chat over a cup of coffee and brandy (methinks) in the bar next door. I say “methinks” as they come out, fags in hands and a bit doddery.

It amazes me just how many of these instructors actually know how to drive themselves. They don’t even tell the learners to use their indicators and just pull out without using a rear view mirror.

Oh, I forgot they don’t have to do that here. I was taught “mirror, signal, manoeuvre,” not just “manoeuvre.”

Cinderella law is a step too far

VER the years I’ve often come out against interference in our lives by the so-called Nanny State - but this most recent Cinderella law codswallop really does make my blood boil.

Who are these faceless people using taxpayers’ money to come up with such pure unmitigated nonsense?

Certainly not parents, that’s for sure. How dare they encourage youngsters to grass up their parents every time they think they’ve been hard done by, it’s bordering on Hitlerism. Under the proposed law parents could be jailed for ‘emotional cruelty.’

As a father of six I dread to think how many times I could have been reported by disgruntled little offspring not happy or having their noses put out by some disciplinary decision or another. The

they should be investigating the monotonous regularity with which babies and toddlers are somehow ‘slipping through the net’ and dying under horrendous conditions.

The social services are in a disgraceful state. Most of its workers are unmarried and without families, simply because there is no time to do both.

I always get the faint aroma of sour grapes when these lunatic directives emanate from their organisations. No, get your own houses in order before you start sending the SWAT teams into ours.

Well my little stint in the Tenerife sunshine will soon be over. Once again I’ve had a great winter with some truly terrific folk. Thanks a bunch, everyone. See you all next year. Can’t wait to get home, mind. Six months is too long away from the children. Sure hope they don’t hate me for it!

Fair success LA HERRADURA and Almuñecar attracted attention at the tourism fair held in Sierra Nevada with many enquiries about the hostelry of the area.

Ficus pruning ALMUÑECAR Council has been pruning the ficus trees in the centre of the town in order to avoid branches falling off and hurting residents, as happened last year.

Jose Manuel Fernandez, Councillor for Commerce, commented that the aim of the weekend was to boost the commercial and tourist sectors with a selection of events to showcase the hostelry, gastronomy, culture and sports in the area.

Gardener is denounced for reckless fire starting A GARDENER working for Velez-Malaga Council has been denounced for starting a fire on council property in Velez.

The man, in the course of his work, was burning a nispero (louquat) tree without taking the proper precautions when the fire spread and burnt five hectares of hills and fruit trees before it was put out.

The public prosecutor’s office pointed out that the man never took into account the weather conditions or the time of year.

The fire caused damage to the value of €106,109.

First brick laid at park FRANCISCO DELGADO BONILLA, Mayor of Velez-Malaga, has laid the first brick on what is to be the new techno park.

The EU and the European Fund for Regional Development have co-financed the €870,000 project with the Malaga provincial government.

The new park covers an area of 4,000 square metres and has already attracted 15 potential clients.

The target for the park is to encourage new and innovative businesses which will, hopefully, bring new development to the area.

CADE, an association which helps new businesses, and the Junta de Andalucia will offer assistance and consult with the fledgling businesses.

ICK JONES, aged 65, from La Marina (Alicante), believes that there is not enough research into e-cigarettes at the moment and what is in them. Despite this, he has used them to help stop smoking. He said: “It is about breaking the habit of smoking, but if you go on to e-cigarettes how do you break that habit? A lot of the time smoking is more the physical and social process of having something in your hand.” Whilst less harmful than normal cigarettes he does think they should be controlled: “They should be banned around children but I’m not sure if they could ever stop it really.”

Barbara, a care home worker, said: “I’m not a smoker, but I do notice a lot of these ecigarettes around and people are sat in bars and restaurants using them. Think beyond Homes, Gardens and Lifestyle

THE first edition of our book Your Garden in Spain had the subtitle ‘Practical ideas for gardens that suit your Spanish lifestyle’ and was a thick 335-page book that included large sections on the growing of fruit and vegetables as well as a comprehensive coverage of growing flowering plants and trees plus garden design and maintenance.

We were matching the needs of our publishers for a large book to replace a long-standing but outdated book titled ‘Gardening in Spain.’ The book sold well but the original publishers sold out and the new owners at reprinting time indicated that three smaller books ‘Your Garden in Spain - From Planning to planting and maintenance’ plus ‘Growing healthy fruit in Spain’ and ‘Growing healthy vegetables’ would better meet their needs.

So it was back to the drawing board/computer and a lost summer but no royalty advance, being Spain. But one thing we did was to include our favourite Spanish recipes for cooking fruit and vegetable dishes to hold the books above competitors. Normally we measure roughly, but for the book we needed to be more accurate so for months we weighed everything for the ingredient descriptions and took photographs of finished dishes.

But frustratingly to no avail as just before publication the recipes were cut out to save costs.

However, the cut info was not lost and by the autumn a new book should be published including the homely recipes.

IT was a full house at Albacete for the opening races in the Spanish National Championships Racing Calendar.

The CRT Racing Team led by David Slader on his BMW S1000RR lined up on the grid on Sunday. The weather was sunny but with cold winds, really quite good conditions.

David, known to many in Spain from his business Broadband Costa Blanca, was quick off the line and within two laps was up to fifth place having started
