Businesses face closure for violating Coastal Law BEACH-BARS which have been open for more than 20 years on El Playazo Beach in Nerja (pictured) may be forced to close. The environment department of the regional government (Junta de Andalucia) has launched disciplinary proceedings against them for allegedly violating the Coastal Law, local newspaper SUR has reported. They have been told to ‘immediately cease’ any commercial activity in the area as they are occupying land under

the public domain. The Junta de Andalucia also wants them to pay a €300,000 fine each,

amounting to more than €2 million. The owners of the four beach bars, two boatyards and the ice-

cream kiosk affected received a notification from the Junta de Andalucia only days before Christmas.

Expat found dead in a ditch A BRITSH expatriate has died after being buried alive in a tragic accident. The 66-year-old man was working in a ditch on his property when disaster struck. According to 112 emergency service sources, he was found buried in a ditch on his rural plot of land between Torrox and Competa near the Pavo Real restaurant. A neighbour from Jurcos near the scene rang 112 at

about midday on Tuesday, advising them that a man ‘had been buried in a ditch’. An integrated force of Guardia Civil, firefighters, Local Police and medical personnel were dispatched but were powerless to prevent the man’s death. Sources said the accident seems to have been caused by the displacement of excavated soil which gave way due to recent rainfall, soil from a project the victim had initiated on his property.

They were given a month to lodge any objections they may have had. Some of them have already expessed their distress at the situation as they have been making their living in the area for more than 20 years. Now they have put the matter in the hands of their lawyers, hoping they will be able to find a solution to save their livelihoods.
