â€˜Stole car then attacked policeâ€™ A DRIVER has been arrested in Manacor for driving in the wrong direction in a stolen vehicle and trying to run over and attack police officers. National and Local Police officers arrested the suspect, a young-man known for criminal activity in this area of Mallorca, for threatening road safety, attempting to cause harm to officials, criminal damage and car theft.

The first report of the incident was made by National Police who signalled the vehicle to pull over for driving the wrong way down a road. Not only did the driver ignore the signals but he proceeded to try to run the officers over, said police. The driver continued to travel at high speeds and crashed into another vehicle when he ran a stop sign. The suspect then fled on foot, but the officers caught him.

Festival to celebrate ‘firewater’

HE 22nd edition of the Fiesta del Orujo will be held in Potes, Cantabria, from tomorrow (Friday) until Sunday. This year, the ‘Orujero Mayor’, the patron of the festival, will be Cantabria-born actor Eduardo Noriega. Orujo is a strong liquor made in Northern Spain, obtained from the distillation of marc, the solid remains left after pressing the grapes. It is a transparent spirit with an alcohol content over 50 per cent (100 proof) and is also known as aguadente, or ‘firewater’. In Cantabria it is mainly made in the Liebana Valley where it has become an artisanal craft for some families who after making wine for themselves distil the pomace in a still. Young orujo is a colourless liquor, while aged orujo is amber. The aged variety is fermented and distilled the same way, but then poured into oak barrels to age for at least two years. Cantabria has been distilling orujo since the 14th century at least.

The Fiesta del Orujo in Potes includes tastings and a contest wherein participants distil orujo in public with their own stills and judges award a prize for the besttasting batch. Many of the locals dress up in traditional costumes and there is also music as well as stalls selling regional products, conferences and other activities. Fire ‘an accident’ THE Guardia Civil have ruled a fire which broke out on a 20-metre yacht in the dry dock in Moll Vell was an accident. It reportedly started when some spotlights overheated near highly flammable paint which had been applied to the yacht just minutes earlier. Organised crime gang arrested for robberies THIRTEEN people have been arrested over robberies in which victims had a plastic bag placed over their heads and were threatened with a knife. National Police officers say those arrested were between the ages of 20 and 30 and had previous police records in Palma. Of the 13, eight were Moroccans, two Chinese, one Paraguayan and two Spanish, all part of what is believed to be an organised gang that committed robberies and distributed stolen goods. Representatives of National Police in the Balearic Islands said in April and May a series of robberies took place in

the area of La Lonja. Police connected the robberies as women and drunken civilians were being targeted. A series of reports suggest the robberies themselves were carried out by three people, one to grab the victim from behind, one to cover the victimâ€™s head with a plastic bag, before being pushed to the ground at which point the third stole anything of value. The reports also said if the victim tried to fight back the robbers would threaten them with a knife to the throat. Following the reports the National Police set up a number of

investigations which resulted in identifying the members of the gang. Surveillance led them to the homes of the accused and their accomplices and allowed them to investigate where the stolen goods were being sold. They found stolen goods were being taken to three cyber cafes and one shop where a Chinese man sold them as a third party. Having gathered this information, the police set up an undercover operation, resulting in the arrest of 13 people. Police have announced the investigation is still ongoing.

The suspect is a married man, in his 30s and father of two sons who lived in Binissalem and targeted girls between the ages of 12 and 15. THE Tourism Board created in Calvia has asked the town hall to change the policies of its programme to lengthen the tourist season. The board is made up of the Calvia Bars, Restaurants and Services Association, the Santa Ponsa Traders Association, and the Fetur and Acotur Tourism Commerce Associations. They have asked to have some say in the projects carried out which aim to attract tourists to the area throughout the winter months. The programme receives some â‚Ź180,000 per year to promote destinations throughout October, November and December. But, the associations complain, to date, this has not allowed more hotels to remain open, despite the programme being in place since the 90s.

Cash wanted to restructure debt

KITCHEN appliance manufacturer Fagor Electrodomesticos needs €170 million to put it on its feet. The San Sebastian company is a cooperative and most of its workers are also partners in the firm. It is currently in voluntary talks with its creditors and has debts that some sources place at €800 million.

The company is “viable,” managing director Sergio Treviño told a Diario Vasco interviewer. But Fagor needs €170 million, he said, and needs it soon to restructure its debt and prevent a domino effect that could cause its collapse. Fagor Electrodomesticos has 5,600 employees worldwide, of whom 2,000 work in the company’s five Spanish factories.

Recovery in the UK gains momentum THE UK economy has been on a strengthening trend for the past few months thanks to improved economic data. The feel-good factor is contagious and is gathering pace across the entire spectrum of the economy. In yet another good report out in early October, optimism in the UK financial industry advanced to its strongest level in 17 years! This is extremely good news that will likely weigh on the Bank of England’s monetary policy direction in the form of forward guidance which focuses on keeping interest rates low for at least three years. The UK recovery has encouraged investors to speculate that the Bank of England will have to lift interest rates earlier than previously indicated. unemployment rate will have to drop below 7 per cent before a rate increase is considered. Any change which involves modification of the original Statutes requires a unanimous vote, as set out in the Horizontal Law. It will be a long and complex process, requiring the legal dissolution of one Community and the creation of two new ones. Yes, you can remain as one Community, with some different regulations for each side of the road. If these rules do not involve changes in the original charter of the Community, a simple majority vote should suffice. If the Community has voted to accept smoking in the pool area, that is the rule. If someone wishes to change it, they can put forward a motion.

Urgent talks needed for late night music bars WHY do I get the impression that the Spanish authorities want to close pubs and restaurants down? In Calahonda’s El Zoco commercial centre (Mijas Costa, Malaga), to comply with regulations, the landlords are being told ‘no music must be heard.’ A lot of tourists use this complex as their holiday destination, mainly because of its music and late bars. There is no soundproofing in these old buildings and to make them legal would cost too much money. These pubs and restaurants rely on the terrace space as they can’t squeeze everyone into a small area with music playing. As a small business, if they want to thrive and make a living, they must give what the customers want. The authorities should have a meeting with all late night business owners and come to a compromise to keep these bars and restaurants open. These bars need to open to accommodate the people that go down to the beach for the sun all day. Night-time is when they spend money and enjoy the night-life. Let us keep the Costa del Sol a holiday destination and not an old persons’ retirement resort GKS (By email)

I really do not understand why people think it appropriate to insist on others wearing clothes when it is warm enough for clothing not to be required. Ticking off IN regard to the letter from Anthony Jones that prostitution should be made legal in Spain (Letters Issue 1478). It has not been illegal since 1995, when it was decriminalised. There are, however, restrictions imposed by some municipalities on where they can operate. Pimping is illegal, but operating a brothel is legal, although the owner cannot directly benefit from the prostitutes’ earnings. I wish readers would do a little research before putting pen to paper. Heart-warming DOES Mr Hunter really want to see Spain’s family life and the peace we have, sent into oblivion? Face facts WHILE the debate over global warming heats up, it’s surprising that many experts ignore one of the main causes of environmental degradation: runaway world population. In 1900, the world population was 1.6 billion; in 1950, there were 2.5 billion; in the year 2000, 6.7 billion; and the projection for the year 2050 is that there will be almost 12 billion human beings. The life expectancy in most developed countries is already well into the 80s, and the rest of the world will achieve this in due course. A human being lives an average of three generations (75 years or more). With only two births per couple, when my wife and I die we’ll have left behind 12 more beings on the planet. It’s not arithmetic, but geometric. The Earth cannot sustain such growth, especially if we all aspire to a ‘First World’ lifestyle. Confronting this inconvenient truth entails difficult moral, ethical and sociological problems, but if we continue to ignore them the consequences for humanity will be unimaginable. A weekly look and not entirely impartial reaction - to the Spanish political scene

PAIN’S President Mariano Rajoy would doubtless have preferred to pretend that the US does not monitor Spain’s communications. The Spanish right now are concerned about surviving on a day-to-day domestic basis. Few are going to waste precious energy over working themselves into an outraged lather about 90 million eavesdropped communications. They left that to the media, which embraced the NSA scandal as a change of flavour after the usual StrasbourgBarcenas-Crisis fodder. The government reluctantly responded by summoning the US ambassador for an explanation while quavering about “erosion of trust.” The NSA subsequently claimed that Spain and France carried out the original eavesdropping before passing the information to the US.

No one is born a racist LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT

BLACK OR WHITE: How racism can be passed on.

O child is born a racist. It is the world of adults that instils the idea that some of us may be different, or in some way unacceptable to others. To a child born in this 21st century, particularly in the West, it is perfectly normal for them to be surrounded by children of all creeds and ethnic backgrounds. Watch any group of children in creches or playgrounds and you will observe them all playing happily together, with no hint of favouritism or antagonism towards each other. So when does the ugly face of racial intolerance begin to manifest itself? Of course, a great deal of it is passed directly from the parents. Racist parents, constantly demonstrating intolerance of others, will sooner or later instil it into their own offspring. But I think in many cases it starts earlier than that and in my opinion, it is the media that must accept a lot of the blame. I think many of the children’s charities should sit down and have a rethink as to how they use the media to circulate their appeal campaigns. Day after day we are inundated with emaciated children, covered in flies with

Deadly bananas A BRITISH family had to evacuate their home after discovering dozens of venomous Brazilian wandering spiders in a bunch of bananas they had bought from a Sainsbury’s supermarket.

Jet-setting gator bulging eyes and inflated bellies. There are no watersheds to these appeals, so from a tender age little ones are constantly exposed to sights of the appalling living conditions and deprived suffering of children and babies. And 99 times out of 100 they are all black! Is it any wonder then that youngsters begin to observe each other differently? What makes it worse is that these children are, by the very state of their circumstances, also observed by these young minds to be inferior to those with full bellies, white parents and taps full of water. And how do the black tots react to this situation? Well to me it’s obvious. Firstly they must, after observing these images of deprived children, most of whom are the

same colour as themselves, begin to themselves feel in some way inferior. This must soon be taken over by any number of emotions. Jealousy, confusion, mistrust, anger and, above all, among both black and white, the previously unrealised fact that they are indeed not all the same. And there you have it. All the ingredients of future unrest and possible conflict. The birth of racism. What these charity groups can do about the situation, I have no idea. Perhaps the best plan of action would be a watershed to showing these images. At least it would prevent impressionable minds from becoming racists before they can speak. Recreational vessel directive THE European Parliament has passed a new directive that redefines the concept of recreational vessels. This new directive also sets new criteria to be followed when designing and manufacturing the boats. Thus, the EU from now on considers recreational vessels those that are between 2.5 and 24 metres long. This new definition leaves aside yachts and big yachts used for recreational purposes, as well as jet skis, no matter their method of propulsion. The new directive establishes four design categories for

recreational vessels: A, B, C and D. An A-type vessel can handle force eight winds in the Beaufort scale, and waves of four metres or higher. A vessel will be classified as B-type if it meets the same criteria as the A-type ones and resists waves of maximum four metres high. Meanwhile, a vessel will be classified as Ctype if it’s designed to resist force six winds in the Beaufort scale and waves up to two metres. Finally, a recreational D-type vessel will be so if it resists force four winds in the Beaufort scale and waves of up to 0.5 metres high.

Mallorca wins at the 420 Copa de España MALLORCAN sailors Maria Bover and Marie Gehrig of the Real Club Nautico Palma won the 420 Class Copa de España in the Sub 16 Category. The first time the two had competed in this class Bover and Gehrig finished 27th overall at the 420 Class Copa de España organised by the Club Nautic S’Arenal. The overall championship was won by the representatives for CN El Candado, Jose Manuel Ruiz and Fernando Davila Ponce de Leon. Other members of the Real Club Nautico Palma team, Iñigo Basterretxea and Marius Madrenas also achieved good results, placing third in the Sub 16 category. Meanwhile another part of the club’s Optimist team competed in Vigo at the International Meeting, where Albert Torres finished in

Palma sailors win at Trofeo Farragut THE Club Nautic of Ciutadella held the 57th edition of the Trofeo Almirante Farragut, one of the oldest competitions in the Balearic Islands. Nearly 100 sailors took part in the Snipe, Laser and Optimist classes of the competition. Conditions were said to be light during the first day’s sailing but picked up in the last day with winds reaching 18 knots. Damian Borras and Julia Rita of the Club Maritimo de Mahon won the Snipe class, followed by Jordi Triay of Mahon and Luis Mas of the Real Club Nautico de Palma in second, with Teo Matheu and Pedro Cabrer of Palma also in third. Juan Manuel Calafell from the Club Vela Port d’Andratx won the Optimist A class and Manel Barbers of Mahon won the B category. Luca Franceschi of the Club Nautico de Villacarlos took the winners title for Category C and Jack Vine of the Ciutadela Nautical Club was the winner of Category D.

HIS Saturday Palma College opens its doors to prospective students who wish to enrol for Autumn 2014. The college began its first year only nine weeks ago but already demand for places is growing with enquiries coming from both the island community and outside Mallorca. The feedback from students and parents has been extremely positive, said a school spokesperson. “Students appreciate being treated in a more mature manner by the teachers and have been impressed at collaborative learning styles. “For some, it has been a steep learning curve in terms of time management and working to deadlines. FIND OUT: Do you know what stimulates your child to want to learn?

How children learn and how teachers teach them Don’t be afraid to ask about lesson planning and teachers’ aims

YOUNG friend of mine recently complained that he was ‘doing’ Australia in literacy, geography, art, history and drama classes in his primary school and he was fed up! The idea of cross curricular projects under a common theme can often seem a great idea at a staff meeting, but the teachers involved don’t have to walk in the shoes of the average 10-year-old. Similarly the advent of the interactive white board in classrooms leads teachers to think their pre-planned lessons are whizzy and fun, but after seven lessons in a row of looking at a board at the front of the classroom, the secondary school pupil often needs a change in the method of learning. Do you know what kind of lesson delivery your child prefers and what stimulates them to want to learn? Parents’ Evenings or Open Days at your child’s school give you the opportunity to ask the staff both about the ways in which they teach and the ways in which children learn. Don’t be afraid to ask about lesson planning and the aims of

Make sure your child’s school is providing up to date Continuing Professional Development courses for the teaching staff and that they are up to date with the courses they deliver. Inevitably all children learn at a different pace and with busy classrooms the teacher often teaches to the ‘middle group’ without enough time to attend to the needs of the slower learners or indeed those who are ahead. Some schools provide ‘Support for Learning’ or have classroom assistants to help, but if you feel your child is particularly adept in a subject, make sure they are receiving work to stretch and challenge them. Some schools still have sets where pupils are grouped by ability but here in Spain sometimes the

schools are not big enough to do this. Many parents are using tutors out of school to help their children with a subject they are challenged by, but this should not be necessary: the school should aim to be meeting the needs of every child. If you have concerns make an appointment to see the Head. They should be familiar with all aspects of the curriculum and be able to explain it to you if they haven’t already provided this information when you enrolled your child. They should also be able to advise on the proportion of time allocated to each part of an examinable subject in secondary school; for example, does the coursework carry the same marks as the exam? Is it reasonable to expect your child to be undertaking three or four coursework assignments at the same time or could they be spread out? We all have different preferences in our ways of learning and whilst schools face the unenviable task of providing a uniform education make sure your child’s needs are being met.

OT far from Costa shorelines lies the wreck of a once proud ocean liner. Was the MV Monte Rosa cursed by fate? The ship’s damnation was to dog every nautical league of its last voyage. Setting out from Japan in February 1954, its 1,276 passengers and crew had every reason to look forward to a pleasant voyage. Their ocean odyssey would be crowned by a homecoming to an England many had not seen for years. Passengers included military families of servicemen based in the Far East. Various were survivors of the Korean War. Among the wounded were veterans of the Battle of the Hook. Many were stretcher-carried up the gangways, The ‘Dukes’ from the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, outnumbered in battle by five to one, had taken honours but casualties, too. Sailing from Yokohama and Kure, the

Defects in the super liner’s propulsion system needed constant running repairs. The luckless liner spent more time wallowing helplessly in the Indian Ocean than sailing. The three-week anticipated passage to Port Said in Egypt took an excruciating eight weeks to accomplish. It must have brought great relief to all on board when Monte Rosa finally limped into Port Said. Now, only the Mediterranean lay between them and England.

Those aboard endured eight weeks of hell

The liner had known far happier days. It had once cruised the sun-drenched Aegean, Ionian, Adriatic and other seas that make up the Mediterranean. However, that was before the 1939-1945 World War.

From 1930 to 1945, the 13,882-tonne liner had been one of Germany’s fleet of super liners. Built by Hamburg shipbuilders Bohm and Voss the Monte Rosa was one of five sister-ships. Under the Kraft Durche Freude (Strength through Joy) leisure scheme Monte Rosa was to later provide German workers and their families the opportunity to take cruises that were previously the preserve of the elite. During the war the liner was used as a troopship. Departing the Egyptian port, the ill-fated liner embarked on the last leg of its voyage. But, sailing off Algiers an engine room fire resulted in a cataclysmic explosion. Four crew members were killed. The rescue of the remaining 1,276 passengers and crew was successful, but the hulk, whilst being towed to Gibraltar, sank beneath the waves. UST when you thought the world of political correctness could not get any sillier, along comes that strange body, the European Court of Human Rights, and demands that convicted terrorists of ETA, the militant Basque separatist group, be released from prison. Now, I have little to do with either side of the Basque conundrum, but I would feel rather concerned if a convicted terrorist - many having killed were to set up home next door. It seems the hand of a reluctant Spanish government has been forced in the matter, which, as with many rulings by the European Court, appears based on technicalities rather than common sense. These busy-

They could bond over dinners, the busybody perhaps sharing

riveting details of red tape and bureaucracy, while the terrorist could hold court about how to make a home-made bomb to cause maximum damage. I wonder how quickly, at that point, the motion to release the prisoners would be rescinded..? But at least that way, the families of the victims would be spared the assassins’ gloating presence in their communities. And while ETA declared an end to its campaign in 2011, few would

surely sleep soundly with the knowledge of who was now skulking around the neighbourhood freely. One of those released, Ines del Rio, was shown in the media smiling as she left prison, where she spent 26 years for her role in 23 murders and terrorist attacks during the 1980s. Unsurprisingly, the decision was vehemently protested against by the public and government alike - two sides of a coin that rarely agree.

Just over a year for each kill doesn’t sound like any justice I would subscribe to, yet the European Court insisted that the releases be made and, in some cases, compensation paid. Now, I believe it is more probable for pigs to fly or hell to freeze over than for any President of the United States to release confirmed terrorists early or at all. Certainly not from a nation that is so paranoid about national security that it spies on the rest of the world - another source of outrage here in Spain, where it was recently revealed that the US National Security Agency had tapped some 60 million phone calls in just one month. I can’t tell you which is worse political correctness or ardent disregard and disrespect of other nations - but if I were a terrorist or criminal of any kind, there is no doubt that I would base myself in Europe, where I could wave the Human Rights flag at the first sign of trouble. Thus keeping those busy Eurocrats in jobs paid for by the European taxpayer.

Babies remember music played whilst in womb

SCIENTISTS believe that babies who were played music whilst still in the womb remembered the tune months after being born. Researchers at the University of Helskini (Finland) gave a CD to 12 pregnant women and asked them to play it five times a week during the last three months of pregnancy before destroying the CD after giving birth to ensure any memory of the songs came from pregnancy. The researchers said that the babies could remember the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star up to four months after birth. The researchers believed: “These results show that babies are capable of learning at a very young age and that the effects of learning remain apparent in the brain for a long time.” However, the study did point out that playing classical music in the womb may not be a way of boosting a baby’s intelligence later on in life. Unborn babies recall music up to four months after birth.

Dress-size matters SIZE 16 women are among the happiest and most comfortable in their own skin, according to a new study. The research found 74 per cent are happy with their appearance, nearly twice as many as the 42 per cent who are size six. And 49 per cent of women whose weight has fluctuated in the past three years, reveal they were at their happiest with a fuller, size 16 figure.

By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.

S indicated in our book Growing Healthy Vegetables In Spain, November and December are popular months for planting overwintering garlic. The garlic plants that grow can be harvested at two stages of growth: As young stems when like large spring onions. Grown to maturity for harvesting bulbs for storing in the late spring. Since garlic needs little space, crops can be grown in large flowerpots on apartment terraces as well as in raised beds and the open garden. How to grow Garlic is best grown by

sowing individual cloves or segments broken off from sizeable bulbs. Plant in a friable, well-draining soil which has been manured for preceding crops but not in recently manured soils. However, if you have a wood-burning stove or an autumn bonfire the ashes can be worked into the soil before planting or sprinkled around growing corms to top up the soil’s natural potash levels. If you have a heavy soil, mix in some sand to improve drainage and place a little sand under each clove when planted. It is wise to water garlic less than onions and if your vegetable plot is watered by a traditional flooding from irrigation channels or is liable to flood after heavy autumn rains, it’s wise to sow garlic on the ridges between the flooded growing strips or specially

prepared ridges in the normal growing areas. Raised beds are excellent for growing garlic as the soil conditions are right and cloves can be planted only eight to 10 centimetres apart, although double that will often yield larger bulbs. When planting, if the soil is well prepared, it is sufficient to push each corm down into the soil until the tip is covered with two or three centimetres of soil. If planted more shallowly they can rise out of the ground after rain or when the roots start to grow. Alternatively, dig narrow trenches or individual holes with a narrow trowel or stick. The only care during the growing season will be to ensure they don’t dry out, and weeding. By the way, garlic planted under or between rose

bushes can help deter fungal attacks and aphids. Obtaining garlic bulbs Garlic bulbs are normally available at Agricultural Cooperatives in vegetable growing areas. However, it is more convenient in many areas to buy large bulbs at a local market. When you break up the bulbs it is worth separating out the large and small cloves and planting them separately. The larger cloves being left in the ground until maturity for harvesting bulbs and the smaller segments grown for the young stems that are excellent in salads, casseroles and omelettes. Although garlic is a major crop in Spain you are unlikely to find more than

two or three varieties. One with a white outer skin, one pinkish and the other with a purple tint. How much to plant As a minimum we suggest you plant 50 cloves and if you have space 300 or more. The more you plant the more you will have for harvesting. When to harvest Young stems are normally harvested when they are about half to three-quarters of a centimetre thick. Mature bulbs are normally harvested when the leaves start to die back. If bulbs produce flower stalks cut these to half their length. Don’t worry if your harvested bulbs are smaller than the ones in the market. Indeed they may be packed with more taste. Storing Ensure you thoroughly dry the harvested bulbs in the sun before storing. They can be stored in net sacks, shallow trays or if you have the patience plait them for hanging up. Typical uses ajos Young stems, tiernos, for flavouring cooked dishes, chopped up in winter salads or steamed

or fried and then mixed into omelettes. These have a mild taste more like spring onions and chives than mature garlic bulbs. Cloves from mature bulbs can be used as follows: a. Chopped up by hand or in an electric herb chopper with tomato for spreading on bread for breakfast or to accompany tapas or soups. Add salt and pepper to taste. b. In a wide variety of soups, casseroles or baked dishes. c. Stir fried or baked as a vegetable. d. A full large bulb in the centre of a traditional oven cooked arroz al horno is an essential ingredient and decoration. e. To give flavour to pickled olives. f. Pickled cloves in a salt/vinegar brine. These are eaten as a tapa in the same way as olives. g. As an infusion for a winter detox and a flu and cold relief as described in our book Living Well From Our Garden - Mediterranean style. h. A decoction in water provides a useful insecticide and snail deterrent - see Section 5.7 Growing Healthy Vegetables In Spain, Section 6.7 Your Garden In Spain and Section 5.7 Growing Healthy Fruit In Spain. Planners criticise roundabouts

THE property boom may be long over with the construction of new buildings grinding to a halt in recent years, but the construction of roundabouts does not seem to have been affected. Francisco Toscano, Socialist Mayor of Dos Hermanas, Sevilla,

blamed TV broadcasts of the Tour de France and former Mayor of Las Rozas Santiago Bonifacio, who used to comment about being ‘amazed’ to see the ‘elegance and fluidity’ of traffic flows absorbed by large French roundabouts without needing traffic lights.

Today, Dos Hermanas has more than 100 roundabouts along with Las Rozas (Madrid) which claims to be the only Spanish town of over 50,000 inhabitants without traffic lights. Town Planner Jose Maria Ezquiaga said that roundabouts are useful tools to regulate traffic

at intersections, but they are not the only solution: “There are major roads such as in Castellana, regulated by traffic lights that work just as well or better. “Roundabouts work when the size and design is suited to the intensity of the traffic, but many create more

problems than they solve.” Some also criticise the design and addition of monuments and sculptures on roundabout, saying they distract drivers. Last year, 7 per cent of injury accidents on roads, occurred at roundabouts.

North Sea at Lynemouth on the North East coast. The Pirelli commission meant taking images in the dark interior of the plant with the main subjects in grubby overalls manipulating black rubber tyres. The first attempt failed and Chris Killip had to return with a large format camera and use flash. It was a challenging assignment but the result was a series of dramatic photos reminiscent of the work of photographers in America during the 1930s and they were displayed in the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1989. Chris Killip’s work brought back memories. I had been raised in London and during the mid-60s worked in the North East of England. It had been a culture shock to see for myself the north-south divide, which still exists today. At a time when the world is facing so many challenges resulting from globalisation, migration, conflicts, poverty, environmental issues and the effects of the economic crisis, the exhibition is a stark reminder of how the past can reflect the present. ©Peter Fieldman 2013 HRIS KILLIP

Few photographers have portrayed life in the North of England during the Thatcher era better than Chris Killip, who currently has a major exhibition of his photographs at the Reina Sofia museum in Madrid. Although born in Douglas on the Isle of Man, he started work in London during the 60s as an assistant to advertising photographers. He branched out on his own as an independent freelance photo journalist, first taking pictures in his native Isle of Man before moving to Newcastle, where he co-founded the Tyne Side Gallery and organised many photographic exhibitions. Chris Killip spent more than 10 years among the local people gaining their friendship in towns like Gateshead, Jarrow, Lynemouth, Skinningrove, Wallsend and Whitley Bay as they tried to come to terms with the economic and

Bahia RC travelled to Menorca to play the first match of the season in Mahon in a game which kept the spectators’ interest until the final minutes. The Menorquin team began strongly with some rapid play and scored a try within the first few minutes. Bahia RC made the most of a couple of handling errors by the Menorquins to score. During the second half the score was even until the final moments when a last push by Bahia RC resulted in a try and the win by 14 points to 18. Truc recognise that even though their game has improved they still have to win a game. Sunday saw the first match for the newcomers to the league, Pollensa RC, against Dimonis RC. During the first 15 minutes mistakes by Pollensa gave Dimonis the chance to score three tries. The home team reacted to this by scoring a try of their own which was converted. By half time the score was 7 to 22 and Pollensa were still fighting hard. With twenty minutes to go Pollensa gave away more

penalty kicks which gave the team from Manacor the chance to put a total of 53 points on the board. Given their inexperience Pollensa appreciate the result was fair but they still intend to keep working hard on their game. In the Girls’ Rugby 7’s series RC Ponent avenged their defeat last week against El Toro RC even though they were missing players due to injury or suspension. The local team pushed hard but weren’t quite good enough to beat the visitors. The third in the series for the U16 Michel Rodier Trophy saw A and B teams from El Toro RC and RC Ponent playing short matches in teams of seven. RC Ponent A came out winners followed by El Toro RC A team, Ponent B and El Toro B. Now that November has arrived many players from teams around the Islands have joined in the worldwide campaign to raise awareness of prostate and testicular cancer by growing a moustache. Lots of Rugby coming up next weekend. The first Mallorca Flag Rugby tournament takes place in the San Fernando Stadium in Palma between 11am and 1.30pm.
