Six arrested in drugs swoop

SIX people have been charged with a crime against public health in two police operations against marihuana growing in Malaga. A man, aged 22, was arrested in Almayate, in the Axarquia area, after National Police discovered 525 marihuana plants at his farm.

Police set up a surveillance operation on his house after suspecting him of storing large quantities of drugs. A search by the Canine Unit revealed that the man was hiding the plants in a stable at his farm. Meanwhile, in Malaga, three women of Dutch origin and two Spanish

men were arrested for alleged drug trafficking. National Police seized 1,800 marihuana plants being grown in two houses in Benalmadena and Mijas. They also seized 500 grammes of marihuana ready to be sold, 70 lamps used to grow marihuana and a gun with a silencer.

November 1 is a national holiday and queues form at cemeteries as families remember the dead. Families buy flowers, visit the tombs of deceased relatives and spend the night praying for them. Sweetmeats known as ‘Saints’ Bones’ are made with marzipan filled with egg yolk. They are shaped in the form of a bone and can be found in most cake shops, along with ‘buñuelos’ which are fried dough balls with sweet toppings. Celebrating Halloween has become popular in Spain in recent years, with many stores selling foodstuffs and decorations, and schools holding costume parties. Sea Festival of La Herradura By JH Longman LA HERRADURA held its first Sea Festival, an event about loving and honouring the sea and the brainchild of Anne Zipse and her committee. Based around the Civic Centre and a cordoned off part of the beach, it featured a series of informative talks about the sea by professionals. A range of activities including shell moulding and arts and crafts were organised for children. Also part of the festival was the Wave of Ideas competition which had six prizes on offer. A Sea Honouring Ceremony was held in the afternoon of the second day of the festival, and finished with a pot luck dinner and video session at La Cochera pub. The festival closed with an official closing ceremony which featured the prize giving announcements and a speech from both Anne Zipse and the Mayor of Almuñecar, Trinidad Herrera. The festival may be over but its message is not, ‘to love and to respect the sea.’

More tourists visit NERJA is the town of the Axarquia where the number of visitors increased the most in the first nine months of the year. According to data provided by the National Statistics Institute, the number of people visiting Nerja increased by 11.31 per cent from January to September this year. This makes Nerja not just top of the list in the Axarquia for an increase in visitors, but the second on the coast of Malaga. The National Statistics Institute has also provided information about visitors to the Costa del Sol. Fuengirola leads this list with a 14.53 per cent increase, followed by Benalmadena, Torremolinos and Estepona. Overall, the number of visitors to the Costa del Sol increased by 136,496, or 4.21 per cent more than last year.

Plan rejection THE Community of Municipalities from the Tropical Coast has made a plea to the regional government (Junta de Andalucia) asking for the withdrawal of the recently passed Coastal Plan. They claim it will seriously affect local tourism businesses.

Promotion, Development and Consolidation of the Tourism Sector in Velez-Malaga will cease operations in the first quarter of 2014. It was set up one-and-a-half years ago to allow local businesses to participate in the development of tourism policies in the town. Velez-Malaga Mayor, Francisco Delgado Bonilla, and the Councillor for Tourism, Rocio Ruiz, made the announcement claiming that members of the consortium consider the body is no longer necessary. At the same time, they claimed local businesses will still participate in the design and development of tourism policies in Velez-Malaga in the form of a sector board. According to Bonilla and Ruiz, the elimination of the consortium will save the town hall €75,000. This is not the first organisation dependent on Velez-Malaga council that has been axed. The Municipal Town Planning Office was eliminated to save €375,000 per year.

Two drug smugglers arrested TWO men have been arrested in Motril for allegedly trying to smuggle 3.5 kilos of hashish into Spain. The arrest took place at a vehicle checkpoint at Motril port after the Volcan de Tamasite ferry arrived from Nador (Morocco). According to sources, a sniffer dog located the drugs on the bus the arrested, of Moroccan origin, were travelling on. Guardia Civil officers found two kilos of hashish hidden between sugar cubes, and 1.5 kilos more hidden in the soles of shoes. The arrested have been remanded in custody, and the Guardia Civil seized their vehicle.

No one was injured in the blaze, although the parents of the boy had to be taken to Axarquia Regional Hospital after suffering anxiety attacks. Police believe the toddler, aged three, accidentally set fire to a sofa while playing with a lighter. The fire spread quickly, forcing the firefighters to evacuate the fourfloor apartment block located in calle Azalea. Local Police, National Police and a 112 Emergency Services ambulance were called to assist while putting out the fire.

Teenage robberies rise because of the financial crisis ROBBERY cases among teenagers have increased in Madrid. Street robberies in Madrid increased by 19.8 per cent in the last year, principally because of teenagers robbing their peers, the Interior Ministry announced. These offences mainly take place in high schools, shopping centres and leisure areas of southern Madrid and neighbouring towns like Parla, Leganes or Fuenlabrada.

Teenagers mainly steal mobile phones, designer trainers and small amounts of money. They do so to reinforce their status within their group of friends, although many are starting to rob because of financial problems. According to police, these youngsters rob in order to help their families or to pay for their studies. National Police are currently setting up an operation to stop these robberies.

New ambassador takes up his post BRITAIN has appointed a new ambassador to Spain. Simon Manley, CMG, a member of the UK’s Diplomatic Service since 1990, has taken over from Giles Paxman as Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Spain and non-resident Ambassador to Andorra He said: “I am delighted to be here in Spain and look forward to strengthening our broad and deep bilateral relationship. Spain is a key ally within the European Union and NATO and is one of our most important trading partners.” Mr Manley, who is married with three young daughters, said he was eagerly awaiting meeting and working with companies in both Spain and the UK, whether established investors or new entrants keen to secure a foothold in their respective markets. He has served as the FCO’s Director Defence and Strategic Threats (20082011), leading the government’s international counter-terrorist, counterproliferation and counternarcotics efforts, as head of Counter-Terrorism Policy (2006-2008) and as head of the EU Economic,

Central Europe and Ireland Department (2002-2006). He has been posted to the UK’s Mission to the UN in New York (1993-1998), where he worked on Yugoslavia

and UN reform, and has twice been seconded to the EU. Mr Manley was made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in 2009 and a Commander of the Polish Order of Merit in 2004. THE Torrevieja Costa Lions Club passed another milestone this week when its President Janette Bennett delivered more than 1,000 pairs of used spectacles to the Centro de Reciclaje de Gafas ‘Melvin Jones’ in San Vicente del Raspeig, Alicante. Emilio Moreno, the centre’s director, was delighted to receive the donation which brings the total provided by Torrevieja Lions to over 9,000 pairs in six years. This achievement is outstanding for the club and has been achieved with great support from the customers and staff of Specsavers in Torrevieja. The Lions have also agreed a collaboration with Francisco Jurado, Director of Specsavers in Guardamar del Segura. Nationally, Specsavers have launched an initiative in all their Spanish stores to collect used spectacles to donate to their local Lions Clubs for onward delivery to the recycling centre. The used spectacles are cleaned, graded and reframed at the recycling centre where they are then held awaiting orders from all round the world where eye care is not readily available.

Fruit policy was a big blunder... MERCADONA makes few blunders although owner Juan Roig recently admitted to one. WE’RE all different, us humans, that’s what makes us unique. So obviously, when it comes to applying for a job, we have our own way of going about writing a CV or prepping for an interview. And according to the confessions of a recruitment consultant, who wishes to remain anonymous, some jobseekers are that little bit quirkier than others. For example, if you didn’t get a call back for a job it could have been the questionable photo attached to your CV that let you down. According to our recruitment source, some jobseekers just don’t seem to realise that an application for a job isn’t the same posting on a

Facebook page. Rather than the professional head and shoulders shot normally required, apparently recruitment agencies spend half their day bent over in laughter looking at the ridiculous pictures jobseekers send in. Like what? Well, how about a CV, where the first page is an A4 size photo of a woman wearing little hot pants and reclining on a tree. Or another classic mistake

that is - a photo on a CV of a girl wearing a Santa hat, who is clearly inebriated at a party. Recruitment agencies even get sent family photos where the jobseeker writes something like: “I’m the one in the blue shirt.” Some people have been known to send entire cover letters in capital letters too, while others write CVs in Romanesque-style fonts that look like calligraphy, or use

fluorescent colours. “No, no, no!” say recruitment experts. When it comes to CV writing the more normal and classic the style the better. And it doesn’t massively matter if your CV is longer than two pages as long as it contains interesting content, spelt correctly. Although the trend at the moment among many young graduate CVs is to send one page with really small font, which some recruitment experts like. And finally, nowadays with the internet everything moves at a fast pace, so as a jobseeker there is no time to be sitting around twiddling fingers. New jobs arriving to recruitment agencies are apparently posted online almost instantly, and recruiters begin to receive CVs within seconds. These CVs are sent on to the client within one or two hours, so it’s vital to be fast if you want to be interviewed.

for the first time in 27 months. It raises hopes that Spain may have finally turned the corner in its fight for economic recovery. The unemployment rate stood at 25.98 per cent, down from 26.26 per cent and

beating a predicted rate of 26.1 per cent. According to the Ministry of Employment and Social Security, the number of jobless is now at its lowest level since June 2007. Unemployment fell by 72,800 to 5.904 million in the third quarter of the year, still

well above the 5.778 million, or 25.02 per cent a year ago. Private businesses were the driving factor in the increase in jobs. While 12,600 jobs were lost in the public sector, 52,000 were created in the private sector, according to the INE National Institute of Statistics. On top of that there has been a migration back to their homelands of the weakest. These did not include thousands of immigrants Santander, Sabadell and Bankinter, unable to find work. THE eurozone’s biggest bank, Santander, has posted a big rise in profits as it put aside less money to cover bad debt in Spain. Time for a rethink on sex trade HARDLY a week goes by without another report of women being ‘freed’ having been forced to work as prostitutes. Whilst I am sure this is a problem in many countries, surely the ‘turn a blind eye’ attitude many people in Spain seem to have to prostitution is one of the main causes of the abuse of these women. The way forward is to tightly control the ‘trade’. At the moment it seems to exist in a legal grey area, with rules differing from place to place. Prostitution should be expressly permitted in law, but only by licensed operators in licensed premises, subject to inspection and control by the police and health authorities. Coupled with a total ban on street prostitution, it would go a long way to solving the problems of criminal gangs intimidating women into becoming ‘sex slaves’. Anthony Jones, Mazarron (Alicante)

Take notice IT’S amazing how the accumulation of rubbish in the streets has woken the coastal residents up to the fact that they are always short-changed by the administration in Orihuela. The minority government is struggling to make the money go round, and we on the coast are the losers. They are spending the money on projects in Orihuela and the surrounding villages in the hope that they will get reelected. There is no need for the government to take the coast into consideration, as we have no representation. That is in part the fault of residents not bothering to vote in the local elections, and the Press not even bothering to have someone present when the plenary meetings are being held. People on the coast are not aware what gets decided in

Bloomin’ disaster RE ‘Red tide disaster’ (Axarquia, Issue 1477) where fishing boats have had to remain tied up for months as the shellfish beds have been closed due to an algal ‘bloom’. This is the inevitable consequence of pollution. Nitrates from fertilisers plus sewage swept to sea feed the algae. Combined with warmer temperatures, these toxic

blooms will become more and more common, causing huge economic loss to the fishing industry and untold damage to the environment. It is in the best interests of everyone to have stricter controls of what we put into the environment. Mankind cannot continue to poison the land and sea with impunity forever more. Trade issues PERHAPS someone could explain why the world’s major manufacturing industries are concentrated in China, leaving the European workforce depleted of work opportunities. Britons first IN 1993, I went to Egypt, stayed at a hotel near Aswan. We chatted with Betani, a lovely Egyptian lad. He had not heard of Elvis or The Beatles, but he did say that he wanted to marry a nice English girl because “I can live in England and the Government will give me money!” It is no wonder the hardworking people of the UK are angry. Another occasion a guy in Calais, France, had been caught trying to enter the UK. The customs officer said: “Why don’t you stay in France?” He replied: “No, I want to go to England because I will be given money.” The UK has been a global joke for many years with respect to its benefits system. Their problem I READ the letter by D Blanchette (Issue 1476) about overpopulation in Third World countries and wondered how the women even get pregnant and carry through to birth if they are so emaciated. Anorexia usually stops a woman from having periods and therefore pregnancy. It takes two non-starved people to create a pregnancy. So are we being conned? Not comparing like with like... LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT

DON’T often follow up on mail I receive, mainly because I think you can get too bogged down with a single subject. Frankly, with a short blurb such as mine, there simply isn’t enough space for such columnist luxury. I will, however, make an exception with regard to last week’s published missive, which likened the British expat community in Spain to the immigrants now threatening to swamp the UK. I agree many of the British are inclined to stick to their own, both socially and abodewise. It is, I suppose a tribal and comfort zone situation, and in many cases (not mine, I hasten to add) perfectly understandable. But there are one or two glaring differences. We don’t strut around with posters insulting and indeed openly threatening our Spanish hosts. We don’t try to change their customs and laws and we don’t insist that Spanish women should be classed as second-class citizens and clad in shrouds. In fact, as another correspondent observed, apart from the concerns now being raised by their ever increasing illegal numbers, the British had no

BRITS IN SPAIN: Not like immigrants in UK. particular trouble encompassing the West Indian and Asian immigrants, many of whom have integrated and brought a very welcome diversity to us notoriously staid Brits. It is only since the influx of the Muslim extremists that all the real troubles have reared up. It is a large section of the Islamic followers who have caused most of the unrest and bitterness. A situation that is now finally

being openly discussed by disgruntled British inhabitants and indeed many politicians. If a whole section of people from another religion and culture make every effort to disrupt and change the society that has taken them in, who can blame its locals for getting annoyed? You can’t really get more ungrateful than that! To compare British expats to these people is not only ridiculous, but to my mind also quite insulting. I think most of us are extremely grateful that we can live freely in the sunshine with our colourful and generally laid-back hosts. OK, so perhaps many could make more effort with the language, and I agree there are those who moan too much. Mind you, these are mainly people that moan about just about anything anyway! But heaven forbid we should try and change their culture, religion or laws. If I personally didn’t agree with the way our hosts lived, I would simply ‘up the roots’ and move to a country I did find ‘acceptable’. It’s a pity the same decision is not being made by many of those who are not satisfied with the British culture and way of life! As a final note I couldn’t make head nor tail of last week’s missive likening me to Sean Connery. Was it complimentary or insulting? Don’t ask me, I only scribble here!

Joking apart, his remark that “Parents don’t want ideology to get in the way of their children’s education” will raise a hollow laugh in Spain. Education minister Jose Ignacio Wert’s ideology is now stamped all over the Spanish system, but in one respect he cannot be faulted. Students must obtain at least 5.5 in access exams to obtain a university grant although the cut-off mark is 5. This is patently unfair, say Wert’s critics, but the unloved minister pointed out that grants are not loans but funded by the

Strasbourg steps in TO the Spanish government’s

READER emailed the other day asking whether it was possible to grow and harvest tomatoes all the year round. My answer was that it is possible provided you protect them from chilly nights and days during the late autumn and winter. They should be potted up in a rich compound, always kept damp, fed with a nitrogen strong liquid feed until the flowers appear and that you then switch to a potassium high feed. Protection can be placing the potted tomato plants in a cool or heated greenhouse depending on whether you are in a frost-free zone or not. A shelf of a utility room or garage

Naturally one can grow potted up tomatoes on apartment terraces as easily as in a garden. These instructions may seem detailed, but they need to be for success. In respect of protecting plants from insects and fungi, we suggest you spray lightly once a month with a 3 per cent neem oil solution and dust lightly monthly with natural sulphur powder if problems start to occur. THIS year’s autumn exhibition at Madrid’s Prado Museum provides an insight into Spanish history, culture and art covering the period between 1650 and 1680.

The King and Velazquez Velazquez had been influenced by Rubens and was acknowledged as one of the finest portrait painters of the baroque era, although never quite reaching the status of his contemporary, Rembrandt. During his visits to Italy, considered the mecca for artists, his talent as a portrait artist was recognised by Pope Innocent X. When he returned to Madrid as official artist to the Royal Family, his relationship with the King gave him access to the palace, which was a rare privilege. The first part of the exhibition displays portraits of the Pope and cardinals in Rome and includes two of King Felipe IV. A large section is devoted to the numerous portraits of the Queen, Mariana of Austria, Maria Teresa, both her stepdaughter and cousin, and especially her

t was a defining moment in Felipe IV’s reign with political, military and financial crisis, and the culmination of Velazquez’s illustrious career as official artist to the royal family during the golden age of Spanish art. It also provides a comparison between his works and those of his assistants and successors, Juan Bautista Martinez del Mazo, his son in law, and Juan Carreno. Felipe IV had been going through a difficult period when he married Mariana of Austria in 1649. His first wife, Elizabeth of France, had died in 1644 and two years later he lost his 17-year-old son and heir, Baltasar Carlos, to smallpox. Two years after the marriage, La Infanta Margarita was born and in the same year Velazquez returned to Madrid from Rome. It was the start of an extraordinary close relationship between the King and the artist.

His paintings of Felipe Prospero and La Infanta Margarita, were considered to be among the finest portraits of children up to that time. Although his earlier portraits were classical with the subject against a dark background, he took advantage of using real locations in the palace and adding personal objects such as flower vases, pets, and ornaments to give greater sense of family life, space and depth to his works. This is evident in his masterpiece, Las Meninas, which is included as part of the exhibition even though it remains in its permanent place in the Prado.

Controversy has arisen over a ‘copy’ of Las Meninas, attributed to his son-in-law, which belongs to the William Bankes collection at Kingston Lacy in Dorset, UK, now part of the National Trust, believed to have been painted in 1660, the year of Velazquez’s death. It came to England during the early part of the 19th century. Art historian, Dr Matias Diaz, from the Spanish Royal Academy of Art, who has spent years researching the origin of the painting, said “I consider this work to be a first, smaller draft of Las Meninas, painted by the master himself.” This is contested by the exhibition’s curator, Javier

There is a mystery over the Cross of the Order of Santiago, an honour bestowed on Velazquez by the King in 1659 and who ordered it to be added to his tunic in the main painting after his death. In addition the king and queen are clearly reflected in the mirror and he delicately holds the brush. In the Kingston Lacy painting the cross is not apparent, neither is the brush and the reflection in the mirror is unclear. There is also a likeness between this work and the family portrait of Martinez del Mazo painted in 1665. This controversy is likely to remain unresolved.

The continuity of Velazquez’s style The final section covers the period following the deaths of Velazquez in 1660 and the King

in 1665. These are works by Mazo and Carreno illustrating the continuity of Velazquez’s style. Margarita married her uncle Leopold of Austria to forge an alliance, which led to the transfer of several of these paintings to the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The portraits of Queen Mariana, who became regent, while her son Carlos was a child, depicts her in mourning, while the young king, Carlos II, appears in his full royal regalia. The exhibition, organised in conjunction with the AXA Foundation, displays 29 major works of which 15 belong to Velazquez. Many of the works on loan from overseas museums and private collections, have never previously been on display in Spain.

The electric car manufacturer will open its first official sales point in Spain during the first half of 2014. Madrid has been the location chosen by Tesla to embark on its entry into the Spanish market, opening a sales point which will be directly managed by them. The California-based

company has not discounted the possibility of opening another sales point in the country. According to the company’s Communications Director for Southern Europe, Roberto Toro, Tesla entering the Spanish market is proof of how important this market is for the manufacturer. Apart from selling electric cars, Tesla will focus on the installation

of so-called ‘superchargers’. These charging stations, reportedly the fastest in the world, can provide half a car battery charge in 20 minutes and a full charge in 75 minutes. The company aims at installing these superchargers near amenities like roadside restaurants, cafés and shopping centres. The idea is to allow Tesla car users to drive

from charging station to charging station with only 80 per cent of the car battery. The American manufacturer also has big plans for the rest of the European market.
