Cover up or be fined Shirts must be worn on streets of Palma STROLLING near naked through the streets of Palma is to be banned.

Fines of up to €200 may be imposed on people who wear swimwear with nothing on their top-half in the streets and public areas of the city.

Wearing swimming trunks, bathing suits or bikinis without a shirt to cover up will only be allowed on the beach, at swimming pools, and other areas like seafront promenades, streets near the beach or along the coastline.

This is one rule included in the new civility laws which the city hall plans to approve in December

so that it is in force by the next tourist season.

It means that Local Police can fine people seen in the historical

centre of the city without a shirt, as well as people who are ‘naked’ or ‘almost naked’ in public areas, except where it is permitted.

€2.5m to restore ravaged terrain RESTORING the 2,400 hectares of the Tramuntana Mountains ravaged by fire this summer will cost at least €2.5 million.

This amount could increase to €4.5 million, according to the Balearic Government.

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Territory has presented

a draft of the Environmental Restoration Plan for the areas of Andratx, Estellencs and Calvia where plant and animal life were devastated by fire between July 19 and August 13.

Head of the department, Biel Company, has said that talks have been ongoing to guarantee that the area will

receive financial aid. Head of the Forest Management and Land Protection Service, Luis Berbiela, pointed out that the aim of the plan is also to make the area less vulnerable to fires in the future.

Palma, the low-cost option SIX-AND-A-HALF million passengers travelled to the Balearic Islands with a low-cost airline up to September this year.

This places the Balearic Islands in second position nationwide for the number of visitors travelling with budget airlines, according to the National Institute of Tourism

Studies (IET). Only Cataluña has received more passengers on lowcost airlines, with 6.8 million.

The Balearic Islands was the region with the most visitors travelling by budget carrier in August, with 27.3 per cent of the national total and a year-on-year increase of 7.4 per cent.

SPANISH bodega has a corking chance of being named the European Winery of the Year.

The Marqués de Riscal vineyard in La Rioja has been nominated for the prestigious award by the US Wine Enthusiast magazine. Each year, it honours individuals and companies who have had outstanding achievements in the wine world with the Wine Star Awards.

The Spanish winery may be mulling over its chance of winning, but it is facing tough competition from Axa Millesimes (France), Joao Portugal Ramos (Portugal), Produttori del Barbaresco (Italy) and Vins de Michel Gassier (France). The winners will no doubt be raising a glass when they are announced in the special Wine Star Award issue of December 3.

And they will be toasting their success when presented with their Wine Star Award trophies at a gala black-tie dinner in New York City on January 27, 2014.

Disabled families €3.1m benefits THE number of families living in sheltered accommodation has risen considerably in the last few years, according to the Mallorcan regional government.

For this reason it will be giving €400,000 to organisations to help children and families in sheltered accommodation, with a further €3.1 million going to help people with disabilities. The new budget adjustment for the Mallorcan Institute for

Social Issues (IMAS), concerned with supporting the community was approved earlier this week.

Family shelters including Canguro, Nido and Nido-propias will receive some of the €400,000. The €3.1 million will be used by IMAS along with 20 other groups working with the collective, to support disability centres, state homes, day care centres and occupational centres.

THE Guardia Civil are investigating a case of sexual assault on a 20-year-old British woman in Magaluf.

Following the young woman’s statement to the Guardia Civil and Judicial Police a 40-year-old DJ working in a local pub in Magaluf has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

The young girl said in her statement that she had visited the pub with a group of friends, and as soon as she separated from them was cornered by the 40-year-old DJ. The police report suggests the incident occurred at around 1am, and according to the witness statement the man approached her and forced her into the establishment toilets where he proceeded to sexually abuse her.

Father and son drugs arrest A MAN and his son were arrested for drugs trafficking after National Police searched their car and found 300 grammes of cocaine and €9,000 cash.

They were caught in a routine search on the border of Son Baya.

Father and son gave statements before a court in Palma and were remanded in custody for a criminal offence against public health.

The court heard the father take the blame. He claimed to have stolen the cocaine and money in Son Baya and was preparing to flee the village.

Police raid children’s party A WOMAN, 31, was sentenced to a year in prison for making a false report claiming that her exhusband had abducted their 20month-old baby.

The events took place in

January 2012 when the couple had separated and agreed that the baby would spend the afternoon at a family party in Palma with its father. The party was held on the ground floor of

the building where she lived. The man sent her a text message saying he would bring the baby home a little later, to which she agreed.

However, she went downstairs and banged on the door, demanding that he return the baby. He called the police, but she claimed he had abducted the child, so police raided the building only to find a quiet children’s party.

She told them it was “the quickest way” to get what she wanted.

She has been ordered to pay her ex-husband €1,800 in compensation.

Maddie programme filmed in Mallorca THE reconstruction of the days before the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, broadcast on BBC’s Crimewatch, was filmed at a hotel in Cala d’Or. Madeleine, aged three, disappeared from Praia da Luz in south Portugal in May 2007.

Explosion injures 3 POLICE believe that an explosion at the Son Moix stadium in Palma, which left three people injured, was due to human error.

According to police, a fuse box exploded when it was wrongly connected to a generator which was being installed to ensure electric at the stadium in case of power failures.

The connection was not protected in any way and some type of lubricant is believed to have fallen on it. Two men sustained severe burns. Another man was slightly injured.

Marihuana sales up in economic crisis SPAIN’S economic crisis is affecting the sales of marihuana.

The Guardia Civil claims to have seen an increase in the growth and consumption of the drug in Mallorca, and believe that one of the main reasons affecting this rise is the state of the economy.

The demand for the substance is also said to have increased as the price has decreased in relation to other similar substances.

Trafficking marihuana on a small scale has also attracted people living in shelters and youth consumers looking to make extra money. However they’re unlikely to make fortunes, “for the business to be profitable they would need at least 100 plants, and that requires a considerable investment and lots of space,” according to Miguel Jimena Chief Lieutenant of the Crime Equipment and Antidrugs (EDOA) department of the Guardia Civil. He warned that trafficking marihuana, even in small measures can still lead to a prison sentence.

So far this year the department has seized hundreds of plants and removed 30 kilos of the drug from circulation. By the end of the year they expect to have confiscated around 100 kilos, which conforms

Fines for balconing and prostitution THE notorious pastime of ‘balconing’ where people jump from

balconies into pools - is being outlawed in Palma.

practice will attract fines of between €300 and €400. Balconing has become poular amongst young tourists visiting the island’s capital.

There has been a spate of accidents involving falls from balconies and several deaths, although not all can be attributed to reckless behaviour.

them of any such incidents as the first step in attempting to reduce the toll of tragedy.

Also in the sights of the city hall are kerb crawlers. Clients of street prostitution will find themselves facing fines.

Prostitutes themselves will be sanctioned for working within 200 metres of zones used by children such as schools.

Marriage scam halted THIRTY-FOUR people have been arrested throughout Spain for obtaining residence permits for immigrants through arranged marriages.

They were arrested in Barcelona, Murcia and Mallorca and arranged marriages between illegal male immigrants and Spanish women or EU-citizens residing in Spain.

They charged them men up to €15,000 to provide them with forged documents with which they could obtain their residence permits. They also paid €400 to other legal residents in Spain to register the illegal immigrants as residents in their homes to provide proof of fixed abode in Spain. The investigation began after it was found illegal immigrants were being offered documents in exchange for money, locating them in cybercafés and other areas.

Most of the men were Indians and Pakistanis, and the women who agreed to marry them obtained up to €2,000.

Financial crisis hits National Police and Guardia Civil THE financial crisis has forced the Spanish Government to reduce the number of National Police and Guardia Civil officers.

There are 2,537 fewer National Police officers in Spain since January 2012, and the number of Guardia Civil officers has decreased by 2,000.

Altogether, both forces have shrunk by 3 per cent in two years.

This is according to both forces’ internal censuses.

And the fall in numbers will continue over the next few years as there will be more officers retiring than joining the forces, police unions have said.

In 2009, 4,307 posts were advertised for both the National Police and the Guardia Civil.

Only 324 posts were offered in 2013.

For 2014, the Spanish Government plans to freeze this figure and keep a replacement rate of 10 per cent.

This means that only 10 officers out of every 100 retiring next year will be replaced by new recruits.

“The future can be worse,” sources at SUP, the main police union, stated.

“In 10 years we will have 20,000 police officers fewer, something that will weaken street safety.”

Meanwhile, sources at the National Police Directorate claim they are working to optimise resources.

They claim there are an average of 688 police patrols on the streets today, while in 2012 this figure was 637.

Fertility rates hit by poor economy THE fertility rate of Spanish women has fallen since the crisis.

The highest figure during the last decade was 1.36 children for every Spanish woman of child-bearing age, recorded in 2008 by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

The higher rate amongst foreign women in Spain was at its greatest in 2002, with 1.86 children per woman.

By 2012 the overall fertility rates for both had fallen to 1.28 and 1.54 respectively.

The harder a country’s economy is hit, the greater the decrease in fertility, concluded ‘Focus on Spanish society,’ a report from the Funcas think-tank. In 2011, Spanish women who worked had 1.91 children while unemployed women had 0.80, Funcas found.

This was in direct contrast to Germany, Austria and Norway with their generous social benefits for families and children.

Germany has a fertility rate of 0.88 for women who work and 2.66 amongst those who do not.

Funcas also pointed out that Spain has a high proportion of couples in the 25-49 age group where both work full-time and have children under six.

Again, this pattern is not repeated in countries like Gemany or Austria.

It is suspected of possible manipulation of oil and biofuel prices.

Get back to financial basics WITH the internet, newspapers, magazines and advertising it’s easy to stumble across financial advice these days, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we take it on board.

It is all too easy to walk around in a daze, paying little attention to how we spend our earnings and this, of course, can lead to financial disaster.

Establishing a good healthy financial situation takes a lot of hard work and attention in the beginning. But once a good system is in place, it becomes much easier to save money and spend wisely.

Starting off on a solid financial footing is all about getting the basics right. There is a lot of overwhelming financial advice circulating out there, but there are some fundamental principles that you shouldn’t overlook.

For example, remember there is no such thing as quick and easy money. If someone says they can double your money with no risk, then turn the other way.

If a savings plan is going to take shape it means taking a step back and really debating a purchase before handing over the cash. Ask yourself if you really need it. Just because the rest of the world has a shiny new object does not mean you have to have it too.

Don’t pay attention to everyone else; just worry about yourself and your goals.

Even if you’re dealing with paying off loans or credit card bills, don’t let

that stop you from saving. It may seem like a good idea to get loans out of the way before saving, but that’s not always the case.

It takes time to form a habit, and training yourself to save is a great habit to form. So start now. Following these simple basic steps will help you towards a less stressful financial future.

Spanish held back as I in 5 fall below most basic reading level SPAIN is near the bottom of the list in a new survey of literacy and numeracy levels amongst adults in developed countries.

That means the country, along with Italy, could be being held back in the fight to emerge from economic hardship.

The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Survey of Adult Skills measured the skills of 16 to 65-year-olds across 24 countries and looked at how literacy, numeracy and problem-solving is used at work.

The results reveal the challenges some major economies face in boosting their skills levels. In reading, more than one in five adults in Italy (27.7 per cent), Spain (27.5 per cent) and France (21.6 per cent) perform at or below the most basic level, compared with one in 20 Japanese (4.9 per cent) and one in 10 Finns (10.6 per cent).

Almost one in three adults in Italy (31.7 per cent), Spain (30.6 per cent) and the USA (28.7 per cent) perform at or below the most basic level of numeracy, compared to around one in 10 in Japan (8.2 per cent), Finland (12.8 per cent) and the Czech Republic (12.8 per cent).

The Survey also reveals the extent of the ‘digital divide,’ with millions failing to master

even simple computer skills, such as using a computer mouse. This ranges from nearly one in four adults in Italy, Korea, Poland, the Slovak Republic and Spain to one in 14 adults in the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden.

It provides clear evidence of how developing and using skills improves employment prospects and quality of life as well as boosting economic growth. It helps countries set meaningful targets benchmarked against the achievements of the world’s CD ght OE Copyri

leading skills systems and to develop relevant policy responses.

“Too many people are being left behind today,” said OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría: “With effective education and life-long learning everyone can develop their full potential.

“The benefits are clear, not only for individuals, but also for societies and for the economy.”

Launching the report in Brussels with with Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, Mr. Gurría added. “Learning does not stop at school: governments, businesses and people can and must continue investing in skills throughout life.”

Investors say yes INVESTORS have given a vote of confidence to Spain by snapping up 31-year government bonds. It was Spain’s first new long term bond since 2009.

IT was more than three times oversubscribed, with the Spanish treasury receiving €10 and the Treasury received €10 billion in offers, more than three times what it had planned to sell, half from foreign investors.

Spain will pay around 5.2 per cent interest, a huge improvement on the 7 per cent for 10 year bonds it was forced to pay last year.

Spain’s financial problems are easing as the European Central Bank has backed the euro and markets are flooded with liquidity by the USA and Japan.

Look to the future to be a big success SOME people are never happy.

For years I have heard people moaning about how the local council does nothing to help the town’s businesses.

Now, Fuengirola Town Hall is digging up two streets to put in new pipes and re-lay/ pedestrianise the area near the port.

This will revitalise those streets and should bring back trade thought lost forever. But when I talk to local businesses they moan. They would rather, it seems, stay in a tatty, rundown street than put up with some inconvenience.

They are missing the bigger picture. Once the work is done they will have businesses on attractive streets, near the port and just off the paseo that could become a goldmine for gogetting businesses.

Take the blinkers off and look to the future! You will be thankful in a couple of months.

Scam or rip-off?

I AM still not sure if this is a scam or a rip-off as it starts out in the usual fashion.

The phone rang and when I answered it, I was told that Repsol were calling to check the gas installation. A short time later, two men turned up with what appeared to be the correct paperwork and badges, etc, so I let them in.

They inspected the installation and produced some kind of filter they said had to be fitted, one to each appliance. I was told it would be €300 to fit the two filters I needed. Being a retired engineer I looked at the filters and decided that a price of €50 might have been more in order considering the amount of work involved was no more than half an hour.

So I said no. At this they started throwing their tools back into their bag and muttering about coming to take the bottles

What a waste!

SENDING garden waste 50 kilometres for disposal, when the council gets around to it, (Costa Blanca South, Issue 1475) is a waste. Not only is it expensive, the waste makes good compost which could be sold.

Orihuela Council really needs to get its act together sometime soon. I am not holding my breath.

If you watch UK television you cannot fail to notice that at least one quarter of adverts are from charities asking for funds to assist with saving children from poorer countries; well-meaning but misguided intentions.

We have been providing funds for generations to save children from various disastrous situations, but those children we have saved will, in 15 years’ time, produce more children, perpetuating the problem.

It is a fact of life that any piece of land will only support a certain population and to exceed that number is inviting further disaster. The answer is sex education and contraceptive help. If these well-meaning charities were to guarantee that all funds they receive would be used totally to that end, I would willingly contribute and future generations would only be asked to assist with funds when an unexpected natural disaster occurs.

Mystery bird...

I WONDER if any of your readers could help me identify a bird I saw in la Cala de Mijas (Malaga).

It was huge and coloured light brown like a young seagull, but had webbed feet and was ringed.

It pecked at everyone - at their feet and bottoms - before I managed to walk it back to the beach, where it did a little run and spread its wings and was gone. It was too big to be a young seagull. I was wondering what the bird might be?

Sticking to his guns LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT

I

MAY appear to be thick-skinned and emotionally uncaring when accused of ranting and racism, but I can tell you I most certainly am not. Particularly as far as the latter is concerned.

Many of my past correspondents have really hit hard with their nasty accusations, including the occasional death threat. The reason I have stuck to my guns over the years, is not only because I believed I was right, but also because I have been strengthened by the amount of positive support I have received. Support which has far outweighed the dissent.

Over the years, literally hundreds of readers have expressed their agreement with my views and have congratulated both me and the Euro Weekly News for having the courage to speak out when they themselves, fearing recriminations, have not been able to do so.

I am also of the firm belief that the pen is far mightier than the sword. With the refreshing open discussions that have emerged this week, not only have all those dissenters been put firmly in their place, but also any violent alternatives have at least been put on the back burner for a while. The extremely ‘better late than never’ SKY News poll this week came up with the fact that

Personally, I like to hope this is only the beginning of a whole new approach to what is still a growing and extremely worrying problem.

In many ways the immigrants have only themselves to blame. There is a wonderful old probably British - saying that you should not bite

the hand that feeds you. In many ways this is exactly what thousands of immigrants have done. Far from integrating with their generous hosts, they have gone out of their way to recreate their own societies, even to forming segregated areas where they endeavour to reproduce the culture and customs of the countries they have actually run away from!

Many companies, particularly cab firms, are manned and run exclusively by immigrants. This can only have been achieved by practising racism, something which they are very quick to whine about when they consider it is being instigated by locals, but in fact, they themselves can often be the worst offenders of all.

The burka is a racist insult to the British people. It is a completely alien outfit, specifically designed to segregate and separate these people from the culture of Britain. Always in black (not pink or blue or some less intimidating colour, you notice!) it is nothing to do with religion and should be banned completely, except perhaps for specific occasional festivals.

The list goes on.

More Families Pay More UK M Inheritance Tax any British expatriates remain liable to UK inheritance tax, where the tax take has been rising over recent years. If you are a British national it is important to understand how this tax, and any changes, will affect your heirs.

If you live or own assets in Spain you also need to keep up to date with Spanish succession tax. It applies if the assets are located in Spain (regardless of residence of beneficiary), or if the beneficiary is resident in Spain (worldwide assets).

UK inheritance tax is charged on your worldwide estate if you are UK domiciled (UK assets only, if not).

The tax rate is 40%, above a tax free threshold. Your spouse is generally exempt (though not always).

Crucially, it is based on domicile rather than residence, a much more permanent concept which does not change simply because you left the UK. The basic rule is that you are domiciled in the country you regard as your homeland. Many British expatriates therefore remain liable for

You can however take steps to protect your family from this tax.

The tax rate is 40% and has remained unchanged since the late 1980s. A lower 36% rate applies if you leave at least 10% of your estate to charity.

The tax free threshold, or ‘nil rate band,’ does change, and affects how many families are caught in the inheritance tax net and how much tax is paid. It used to rise each year with inflation, but has

been frozen at £325,000 since 2009 as part of austerity measures.

The March Budget confirmed it would remain frozen until at least 2018.

We have warned that freezing the threshold is effectively a tax rise. Now, analysis released by Saffery Champness reveals that HM Revenue & Customs’ tax take increased by 9% in just two years since 2009. (Data is not yet available for the 2011-12 tax year.)

The number of estates paying this tax increased by almost 6%.

With the freeze scheduled to continue until 2018, more families will be pulled into the inheritance tax net, and tax bills will rise.

Rising property prices and asset values rise will also impact on inheritance tax bills.

The £325,000 threshold is per individual. Any used portion can

be carried forward and used by the second spouse/civil partner.

It is not all bad news. It is often possible to mitigate or avoid this tax with careful planning and professional advice.

As an expatriate you may be able to change your domicile. This is hard, but not impossible if you intend to live in Spain permanently and cut ties with the UK. It is complex and professional guidance is essential. HMRC can deem you to be domiciled in the UK even if you consider that you are not - this would have unexpected tax consequences for your heirs.

Even if you do change your domicile, you will still be deemed to be UK domiciled for the next three years.

Also if you or your spouse return to the UK in future, you are likely

to immediately regain your UK domicile status, plunging you right back into the inheritance tax net.

Changing your domicile is not the only way to escape UK inheritance tax. You should seek expert advice from a specialist who is au fait with domicile issues, and how UK inheritance tax and Spanish succession tax interact, so they can recommend the best solutions for your situation.

Duran Lleida: ‘Brussels will not bend the rules for Cataluña’ Cassandra Nash

URAN LLEIDA shot down in flames the separatists’ belief that Brussels would bend the rules to keep Cataluña within the fold.

“It’s impossible to say that Europe will save us a place.

Europe left us with bare backsides after the War of Succession in 1714,” he warned.

Old rancour lasts for centuries, especially when it’s the result of an unwise choice.

Voices of reason IS the PP milking the Cataluña question for all it’s worth?

Better a sovereignty issue that unites most nonCatalans regardless of ideology, than the corruption issue that temporarily united the entire nation.

Meanwhile, voices of reason are becoming more audible and one of them belongs to Josep Duran Lleida.

His party Unio Democratica de Catalunya is one half of Convergencia i Unio (CiU), a centre-right nationalist party that is actually an electoral alliance. The other half, Convergencia Democratica de Catalunya is headed by Artur Mas, the regional president.

Duran Lleida would settle for leaving conflict to one side, he said recently, and happily accept wider self-government powers.

Would Artur Mas settle for this? Possibly, but he has schlepped so far along the

Old loyalties SOMEBODY tried to blow up Senen Pousa who is a Franco-

supporter and proud of it.

More accurately somebody tried to blow up the town hall in Beade (Orense). The council is controlled by the PP and Pousa has been mayor for more than 40 years.

No-one was hurt and the building remained intact although badly damaged. “They’re not going to change the way I think with bombs,” he said afterwards.

Pousa, a Galician who has never hidden his respect and admiration for the dead dictator, another Galician, claims that noone in the party has ever tried to bring him into line.

Pousa went even further by claiming “there are many people in the PP who breathe the same air, but say nothing.”

It is not an old man like Pousa who endangers democracy. On the contrary, he demonstrates that democracy can absorb and digest eccentrics. The real danger comes from the people who use bombs to make a political point.

Euro holds its own against US dollar

Training vessel visits Palma T

HE three-masted barque Alexander von Humboldt II has made its first visit to Palma.

The barque was built as a replacement for the training ship Alexander von Humboldt which started sailing in 1906.

The original barque was owned by the German Sail Training Foundation and was known to Palma residents as it participated in several races.

The Alexander von Humboldt II was constructed in the BVT shipyard in Bremen and launched in 2011.

Its 65 metre length and 10 metre beam can host up to 79 people including the crew in 26 cabins for two, three or four people.

The vessel is propelled by 28 sails with a total size of 1,360 m2 distributed on three masts, the tallest one being almost 33 metres.

Its current captain is

Wolfgang Sulz, who has worked as a merchant seaman as well as in the port of Bremen.

The Alexander von Humboldt II offers sail training for people aged between 14 and 75, but it also operates as a cruising ship.

In fact, its trainees help in all the tasks to be carried out on the boat.

In exchange, they live a unique experience in which they learn about the nautical arts.

The vessel normally spends the summer season in the Baltic and the North seas, whereas it usually sails the Mediterranean in autumn.

The Alexander von Humboldt II will now head to the Canary Islands where it will spend the winter.

THE Joves Navegants, a foundation for underprivileged children in Mallorca won Category C in this year’s Mediterranean Tall Ship Race and Regatta with their 21 metre vessel Galaxie.

Racing against 39 grand vessels, Galaxie placed third in the first leg from Barcelona to Toulon and second in their category

Joves Navegants triumphs in Tall Ships Race for the second leg from Toulon to La Spezia in the lead up to their win in the third leg earlier this month.

The four adult crew, including Captain Terry Perkiss, plus five disadvantaged young people from local care centres, stated in a press release that they had continuously “worked hard” and “put everything they had into ultimately winning the race.”

Flying across the finish line in first place, and gaining the first place overall win in her class, Galaxie’s crew were said to be ecstatic with the result.

And organisers and supporters were said to be pleasantly surprised at the amazing achievement for an amateur crew in a renowned international regatta.

The crew later thanked the Superyacht Cup,

Rotary Palma and Rothschilds for their ongoing support and

sponsorship.

For more than 20 years Joves Navegants has been TALL SHIPS: 40 vessels took part.

teaching some of the island’s most disadvantaged young people how to sail, navigate and appreciate the island’s rich marine ecosystem.

In northern Europe the benefits of sail training for children with a wide range of social and physical problems is well known, and it was this philosophy that led English and Irish yachtsmen to set up the organisation in Mallorca in 1992.

Today Joves Navegants is a fully fledged Foundation, and helps dozens of young people every year. For the most enthusiastic teens, the charity not only helps them with social interaction but also enables them to take professional qualifications and join the island’s buoyant nautical industry once they complete their schooling.

OU know there is such a thing as a ‘Bucket List?’ It’s a list of things to do before you die.

Well, I should try to keep a record of my own personal Bucket List as I fulfilled a great ambition this week: I went to the Son Reus rubbish dump just north of Palma.

I know, call me a nerd, or a weirdo, but I’ve always wondered where my rubbish goes. We live in S’Arraco where all of the villagers are compelled to separate and sort their rubbish. We have door to door collections of organic waste, plastics, paper, glass and ‘mixed’ (that’s when we get rid of the cat litter, wine corks, and things that don’t fit in with the easier categories). I have obsessed about this topic before on my blog www.familymattersmallorca.com.

I’ve been diligently putting things in the right containers for more than two years:

tearing the cellophane windows out of envelopes, washing out yoghurt pots and, this is when I really feel like a hero, even washing out the cat food tins and (horrors) touching the strange jelly stuff that clings to the inside of the can.

The system works thus: you collect your varied rubbish and then on set days of the week you hang the appropriate bag of separated rubbish outside your house to be collected by the waste collection gang from the council. It’s certainly brought my local community together more: hanging out the weekly bag for glass recycling is an opportunity to rate each other on alcoholic intake.

But once the bag is collected, what happens to it next? Does my attention to detail matter, or was it all going into the same hole in the ground anyhow? It had played on my mind that’s for sure, and I often wondered if I could go to see.

Well, thanks to EPORE (Europeos Por Espana www.epore.org) I did. They organised a trip this week and I jumped at the chance to go, thinking I was going to some secret place where no one was allowed to visit.

VISITORS: The trip took us to the Visitors’ Centre and the Education Centre.

Far from it: we met at the beautiful Visitors’ Centre and watched a very well made video in English, and then took in the Education Centre and went on a monorail train around the site to see how rubbish was recycled. I found out about how the recycling centre is one of the best in the world, that surprised me, I also found out about how the incineration of rubbish (which is about 50 per cent of the waste created here on the island, the rest is processed and then recycled) creates energy for 60,000 homes. It was absolutely fascinating, and anyone can do it.

Better still, I had some pressing

questions answered by Montse, our guide, who put my mind at rest. No, I am not a nerd for separating the cellophane from the paper envelope; thank you for washing out your tins, but you don’t have to (you cannot believe how happy this made me, no more washing up cat food tins!); it doesn’t really matter if you use glass bottles or plastic bottles, they both have to be recycled; plastics includes all plastic, plus it also includes tins and metals, and the things which are called ‘briks’ i.e. cartons to you and I. There was always the doubt in my mind that although I was doing my bit for the environment that it didn’t really matter, well I learnt this week, that it does.

VER wondered what happened to that childhood/teenage friend of yours? The one who suddenly wanted nothing more to do with you?

I’m often asked about my novels. About how much of me and my personal experience goes into them.

To give a brief but balanced answer: ‘yes and no.’ Well, I did say brief! Yes, because, inevitably, those you meet do

influence you. No, because the characters eventually created are composites.

As for authors who sell in the millions, do they portray themselves as they are or

would like to be? Take the late Stieg Larsson (The Millennium Trilogy). His protagonist, Blomquist, is described as a goodlooking, campaign magazine journalist attractive to women.

Larsson was also a campaign magazine journalist. As for his looks, peep at his image on any back cover. Go figure!

The names for characters have to be handled with real care, too. Take names like Beckham, Blair or Ramsay. Give any one to a quiet, self-effacing character and all the connotations take over. And in your mind’s eye, all you’ll see is Beckham/ Blair/ Ramsay as, in psychologists’ jargon, feelings of transference take over.

Which brings me on to that old chestnut: writer’s block.

Here I’m reminded of (Raymond) Chandler’s Law: “When in doubt, have a man come through a door with a gun in his hand.” Good grief!

And, finally, what about the actual writing? Grammar and so on. Which reminds me.

Once one of my readers graciously offered to proofread my manuscript and pinpoint any errors in punctuation, spelling and style.

Of course i spel perffecttly and theres never no punktuation, erors! so her job was like, :- easy.

FTER more years than I care to remember, I still recall the elbow in the ribs. “Get up, son. Give the lady your seat.”

When I became less of a callow youth, I would volunteer my bus seat without a poke in the ribs. It was, and still is, my second nature to keep open a door for an approaching lady.

I help elderly people on or off public transport or I take their bags whilst they alight. I am not sure who gets the warmest glow, them or me. Civility towards others was drummed into me but I confess there have been lapses.

Etiquette might have been the

first French word I learnt. As I helped a new member of the staff with her coat, I sensed her body ‘blushing.’ The same happened when I held the car door open for her. She afterwards told me that no one had ever done that for her before. Jayne was in her late 20s.

A little before my time true gentlemen got to their feet when a woman arrived in the room. I do recall that when passing a woman a man might doff his cap or at least touch its brim.

Conversational good manners have disappeared. It seems that everyone agrees with the principle, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Do not expect it to be other than fine words.

Today there seems to be a streak of almost medieval intolerance shown towards those of conflicting view. Unwillingness

to simply accept an opinion often leads to a verbal brawl.

During the 1930s and earlier, mining villages and similar working class communities across England had their debating societies.

Each speaker was accorded civility and debaters’ opinions were respected. One suspects that fear of a punch-up or a visit from ‘Plod’ would discourage such freedom of expression these days.

According to one survey, many young people have never written a handwritten letter. It is inconceivable that they might pen a few expressions of gratitude to someone who had given them a gift, shown a kindness, attended a function or perhaps accommodated them for a few days.

Recently our group was disappointed to find a Sunday dinner restaurant fully booked.

Stuff happens but given the discourteous brush-off, we will

not be visiting a second time.

Many in public service are sadly lacking in people skills. Ironically, it is not the youngsters who tend to be bad mannered; the worst offenders are those old enough to know better.

There are of course many exceptions to the rule, but the incivilities of an intolerant or rude minority spoil everyone’s day.

Perhaps it is our fault for tolerating the intolerance of others. I no longer do so.

LREADY deep in recession, can Spain’s fragile economy take another hit if the shutdown snowballs into a financial crisis that affects the whole world?

“America thinks its role is to police the world’s actions, but they are not the world’s police,” says ‘El Diablo’, aged 82, from Moraira (Alicante).

Having travelled and worked all over the world, including on the Sarir Messla oil fields, he believes the US dollar is about to “go totally bust” and that Spain should focus on its own interests rather than follow or be led by America. “Spain’s biggest mistake was to become part of the EU,” he said.

Suzanna Brighten, visiting her holiday home in Benissa (Alicante) from Yorkshire, said:

“America has a massive global impact; rightly or wrongly, that’s how it is.” The 48year-old housewife added: “I don’t think Spain or the UK for that matter, could possibly survive another financial crisis.

Norman Clarkson, retired, who lives in Arboleas (Almeria), thought military adventures abroad were costing the US more. He said: “The wars in Afghanistan and before that Iraq cost the US billions.

They should pull all the troops out. Spain’s problems are caused more by the banks and the construction industry right here rather than outside influences.”

Dave Lavelle, who is semi-retired and lives in Partaloa (Almeria), sees more trouble on the way. “Spain will take another hit. The country will survive because it is in the EU. It means more pain for the Spanish people, although many people in my area already live a simple existence,” he said.

Chinese scientists at the Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou examined 57 drinks ranging from herbal teas to soft drinks.

Their results showed that the lemon and lime drink worked best in speeding

up the process to help the body break down the alcohol and recover quicker from the effects of a hangover.

The scientists also discovered that herbal drinks made with hemp seeds actually increased the length of recovery time so the effects of a hangover would last for longer.

Vitamin D ‘no effect’ on bones A NEW study has queried the effect of Vitamin D supplements and said that healthy adults do not need to take the substance as it has no beneficial effect on bone density.

The University of Auckland analysed 23 studies involving more than 4,000 healthy people.

As a result of the findings, the UK guidance for the consumption of Vitamin D is being reviewed. It currently stands at a daily allowance of 10 micrograms (0.01mg) for pregnant women and people over 65, whilst expert advice is to consume no more than 25 micrograms (0.025mg) a day.

A

CHANGE is as good as a rest, they say. But if you happen to be a teacher at a state school in parts of Catalunya, a change actually is a rest, more or less. Thousands stayed at home for some three weeks, occasionally taking to the streets to display their disdain in green slogan t-shirts. At the time of writing they had returned to the classrooms, albeit grudgingly and the situation is far from resolved. For readers who have missed this debacle, let me bring you up-to-speed in simple terms.

Some brain box in the government was rolling his thumbs one day and came up with the concept that schools in the Balearics

should teach kids in a combination of Catalan, Castellano and English. In itself, this was a rather savvy idea, with other Spanishspeaking countries like Argentina having reinforced English heavily many years ago, making their workforce highly marketable on an international basis.

Now, as with almost all new policy proposals in Spain, this one was roughly drafted - much like the recent Foreign Asset Declaration policy which left many of us all running around like headless chickens without enough information or guidance.

This time, they presumably expected the changes to happen with the help of a magic teacher’s wand and little more.

The main thrust of the rebuttal from teachers has been that they cannot teach in English at the turn of a dime, but locals assure me the matter runs deeper still, with the age-old issue of Catalan versus Castellano at play and the many political implications this

The Catalunya independence movement is alive and well and is not impressed with this latest interference.

A solid case can be made for both camps, and who ends up ‘winning’ remains to be seen. Still, the only real losers in this equation are, of course, the children, who are far behind their curriculum and who now have visible proof of how adults - their

so-called role models - resolve conflicts. It suggests that change should be feared and is a not a good thing and people should not continue to educate or improve themselves once they have gained a certificate and a job.

This is a far cry from the opinions of some of the world’s most respected historical figures: Winston Churchill once said: “To improve is to change, to be

perfect is to change often,” while George Bernard Shaw said: “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.”

If Spain happened to be enjoying a moment of economic and social Utopia, the case for maintaining the status quo could perhaps be made, though we all know this is not the case. But anything the government proposes will be received with a great deal of scepticism as the corruption scandal continues to headline in the media at regular intervals.

Trust is slow to be earned and easy to lose, yet perhaps they should try to put differences aside for the sake of the children who find themselves piggies-in-the middle, and in limbo.

Perhaps Phil Collins said it best in his 1985 anti-war song, Russians. ‘I hope the Russians love their children too.’

Why some diners pick unhealthy dish A STUDY carried out by a professor at the Fuqua School of Business in the

US has found out why people order the most fattening meals when dining out.

Marketing and Psychology professor Gavan Fitzsimons claims a diner’s decision is not based on his or her cravings, but rather they are influenced by external factors.

Fitzsimons points to two factors that determine why people go for the most fattening dishes.

The first one is the mere

presence of a healthy alternative on a menu leads many to choose a not-sohealthy option. In a way, the healthy option gave the diners licence to be tempted, an effect Fitzsimons described as ‘ironic’.

The second factor that can lead to making an indulgent choice is related to the appearance of the person serving the meal.

Being aware of these two factors may help people make a healthier decision.

needs correcting. This is especially important as the dish is one of the major international emblems of Spain and most of the ingredients can be grown ecologically in everyone’s gardens.

Earlier this year as the confusion exists I compiled the book ‘Your personal guide to making Authentic Valencian Paellas’ which is now being translated to Spanish at the request of local Spaniards.

As the weather was warm and dry and many vegetables were readily available on Valencia Day, October 9, I cooked a paella for an international group of friends using as many ingredients as possible from the garden and following the ingredient preparation guidelines and recipe to the letter.

The ingredients available were the last of the tomatoes, butter

This year the rice was from the local Valencian rice fields as there were major germination problems this year with our mini rice field in an old bath.

The end result was much appreciated and the photograph was taken on my basic camera, by my

good friend Jurgen Schadeberg, the famous photographer who took the renowned prison cell return photographs of Nelson Mandela, who lunched with me.

Desserts included a deliciously ripe final melon harvested at the beginning of September and the last of the figs cooked in sweet wine and anis liquor.

Planting vegetables this month During the next few weeks a wide variety of vegetable plantlets can be planted up in a veggie plot, raised beds, growing tables or builders’ buckets.

There are now an interesting range of inexpensive coloured builders’ / gardeners’ buckets available including attractive green ones if black ones offend your aesthetic tastes.

After useful autumn rains we are planting/ sowing beetroots, broad beans, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflowers, dandelions, parsnips, peas, red cabbages, celery, garlic, leeks, lettuces, onions, spinach, radishes and rocket.

Foreign buying power MORE foreigners are purchasing property in Spain.

According to the latest figures published by the official college of notaries in Spain, the CGN, sales to non-Spaniards in the second quarter of this year had risen 22.6 per cent compared to the same period in 2012.

CGN say that the increase in sales is due to non-resident buyers, with the number of Belgians buying in Spain rising by 78 per cent. There were also 70 per cent more non-resident French buyers than in 2012.

More Russians and Moroccans also bought in the second

quarter of this year, whilst UK buyers accounted for 15.5 per cent of the purchases made by non-residents, compared to 49 per cent in 2007.

The Murcia Region led the way in terms of the number of foreign buys, with 42.9 per cent more sales.

Balearic property prices edge closer to London THE average price per square metre of property sold by Mallorca and Ibiza Sotheby’s International Realty this year is €9,000.

This puts the Spanish islands into the same price bracket as certain parts of England’s capital.

According to September research from Savills, prime ‘second-hand’ property in South West London is valued between £5,490 and £10,656 per square metre and for the East of the City between £5,382 and £8,503 per square metre.

High prices in London are being blamed on strong overseas demand.

Daniel Chavarria Waschke, Managing Director of Balearics Sotheby’s International Realty, said: “Due to ease of access from most Northern European cities, more than 80 per cent of our buyers are not Spanish. Looking at the year to date, half of all our enquiries are from Britons and Germans, 34 per cent and 21 per cent respectively for Mallorca and 40 per cent and 10 per cent for Ibiza, and they are placing high value on location alongside quality of construction, a considered layout and a superior level of decor.

“Tastes are more refined and budgets seemingly limitless, but supply is relatively low, hence the

minority third. Brits certainly feature very strongly in 2013.

“Whether the balance will switch further afield to China, Hong Kong and Russia when Spain’s new Golden Visa legislation takes effect remains to be seen.”

Porsche celebrates 40 years of 911 Turbo TO coincide with the 40th anniversary of the 911 Turbo, Porsche has presented the open-top versions of the new generation 911 Turbo and 911 Turbo S. Making their worldwide debut at the Auto Show in Los Angeles in November, the two new models will double Porsche’s 911 series to four versions.

The 911 Turbo Cabriolet and 911 Turbo S Cabriolet deliver the same performance and efficiency offered by the 911 Coupe model unveiled a few months ago.

The turbocharged 3.8litre six-cylinder engine delivers 520 bhp (383 kW) in the open-top 911 Turbo and 560 bhp (412 kW) in the S model.

The cars accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 3.5 and 3.2 seconds respectively, reaching a top speed of up to 318 km/h.

Both of the new models comply with the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), offering figures of 9.9 l/100 km (equivalent to 231 g/km CO2).

Ford celebrates it’s assembly line centenary FORD MOTOR COMPANY has celebrated the 100th anniversary of the moving assembly line designed under the leadership of Henry Ford.

The moving assembly line, regarded as the world’s greatest contribution to modern manufacturing, was first used at the Ford Highland Park plant in Michigan.

The new process simplified the assembly of the Ford Model T’s 3,000 parts by breaking it into 84 distinct steps performed by groups of workers as a rope pulled the vehicle chassis down the line.

This dropped the assembly time for a single vehicle from 12 hours to about 90 minutes.

As a consequence, Ford was able to drop the price of the Model T from $850, the equivalent to $20,080 today, to $300 ($7,087).

By Lynda Demangeat THE first leg of the Michel Rodier Trophy for the U16 and U18 teams kicked off the Baleares rugby season last weekend in Principes de España sports ground.

This trophy was first awarded last year in memory of Michel Rodier who was instrumental in bringing the sport to the Baleares, especially as part

of the original Costa de Calvia Club and a past president and trainer of El Toro Rugby Club.

It aims to promote Rugby 7’s around the Islands as this will be a new sport in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in 2016.

It was not only a warm day with the sun shining but competition was hot on the pitch too with plenty of spectators in the stands treated to some exciting confrontations.

Only two teams are competing in the U16 tournament, Rugby Club Ponent and El Toro Rugby Club. They played three

Baleares rugby season kicks off

Saturday sees the second round of the Trophy organised by El Toro Rugby Club which will kick off in

Son Caliu Rugby ground at 1pm.

Today (Thursday) the football pitch outside the Baleares University will be hosting an afternoon of promotion for Girls Rugby.

Organised by the Baleares Rugby Federation, the event kicks off at 3pm, and anyone interested in taking part in the sport or finding out more is welcome to attend.

The first tournament of the season for the girls 7’s teams will take place on Saturday .
