Frenchman quizzed over €1.4m jewellery heist A MAN, 40, has been questioned by police in Manacor about his alleged involvement in three major jewellery heists in Cannes, France. In one of them, €1.4 million worth of jewels were taken. The French citizen, of Algerian origin, was arrested by Guardia Civil officers in Cala Rajada in late June, charged with committing several robberies at hotels in the

area. He is accused of stealing €600,000 worth of jewellery and cash. He allegedly broke into 25 safes and was caught by a member of staff at one of the hotels. He resisted capture with violence and threatened witnesses with a knife, and was caught when attempting to flush €6,000 worth of banknotes down a toilet. He was also carrying €50,000 worth of

jewellery at the time. He has been remanded in custody. A judicial committee from France travelled to Manacor to question him about three heists which took place during the Cannes Film Festival in May. He refused to talk to them and was taken back to prison on the Soller road. The French police believe he is part of an international gang.

During one of the robberies, the culprit entered the hotel room of the representative of jewellery company Chopard and stole items worth €1.4 million, which were due to be worn by actresses on the red carpet. Security images show the thief exiting the hotel with a suitcase. Another robbery was committed at the same hotel and at a mansion in Cannes.
