Summer of recovery Hotels full as tourists return to the Axarquia

IT has been a summer of recovery for local hotels with occupancy rates of up to 95 per cent. According to the Costa Tropical Hoteliers Association, Almuñecar resorts saw an occupancy rate of 90 per cent in July and August. That is a 4 per cent increase in

relation to 2012, with more Scandinavian and French visitors than ever. And hoteliers across the Axarquia have been reporting better figures than in 2012. The increase is credited to a series of marketing campaigns promoting the town internationally, according to

the Almuñecar Tourist Board. Occupancy was especially high in four-star hotels, with peaks of 95 per cent. The tourist board is expecting equally bright figures in September with an estimated 80 per cent occupancy rate during the first 15 days of this month. Meanwhile, in August, holiday accommodation Torre del Mar Mayor establishments in VelezFrancisco Delgado Bonilla Malaga registered an gave little weight to the occupancy rate of 82.5 issue, saying the flooding per cent, a 6 per cent was just an accumulation of increase over last year. water in zones where it is Velez-Malaga Tourism usual. Jesus Perez Atencia, spokesperson for the ProTorre del Mar independent political party, blamed the town council for the flooding. He said it should have opened the overflow

Environment group appeal against beach bar plans AN environmental group has appealed against plans to build 15 new chiringuitos (beach bars) in Rincon de la Victoria. The Axarquia Nature Studies Cabinet (GENA), part of the Spanish environmental confederation Ecologistas en Accion (Ecologists in Action) has

presented 12 public statements opposing the construction of such bars. The environmental group is basing its appeal on the design adopted for the new chiringuitos, similar to those recently built at La Malagueta in Malaga city. These are fixed concrete structures that would occupy a total surface of 330m2 each and an extra 450m2 for their basement. Still waiting to start school FOR many the school year started last Tuesday, but not for some students from the Narixa school in Nerja. Refurbishment works for the school located in the town’s historic centre have finished late, leaving 150 pupils aged between three and five with no classroom. Education councillor Gema Garcia blamed the regional government, which is responsible for the maintenance of schools, and

accused it of unnecessarily delaying the start of the works. “The lack of care from the regional government is obvious,” Garcia said. Meanwhile, the regional government’s Education department admitted the works were late and would delay the beginning of the school year for some pupils. As a temporary solution, the Education department has

suggested the pupils could be assigned to different classrooms in the same school. But the parents are opposed to this proposal as, they claim, the rest of the classrooms in the school are not prepared for children of that age. The new refurbished classrooms will need to be painted once the works have finished, with no reopening date expected at the time of going to press.

Rice attraction! Iconic paellas will draw the festival crowds

S

PANIARDS are so proud of their nationally grown rice they hold a whole festival to honour it. The Sueca Fiesta de Arroz, or Rice Festival, is one of the biggest events in Valencia. There will be fireworks, live entertainment, dancing and parades, but star of the show will be the iconic paella. Like the visitors, of which there will be thousands, the ingredients for the many paellas that will be cooked at Sunday’s 53rd International Paella Competition, come from all over the world. With just one special exception. The rice must be grown in the Valencian region of La Albufera. It is a serious business with a first prize of €2,500 and strict controls on ingredients enshrined in competition rules. Since the 18th century the main rice-growing area has been a freshwater lagoon and estuary on the Gulf of Valencia coast covering 52,000 acres in the Albufera Natural Park. Sueca is known as the ‘rice city’ of Spain and September is

dedicated to the grain, which is the base of the local economy. The town, population 30,000, is in the north of the Costa Blanca and as part of its Rice Festival organises talks, workshops, tastings and art exhibitions dedicated to the product.

SERIOUS BUSINESS: First prize in the International Paella Competition is €2,500.

The massive figure is allegedly a consequence of a series of trials in which the previous government team was involved. Now members of the Antonio Tastet lawyer’s office have presented the bill to Almuñecar Town Council. Even though he was not the only lawyer to work for the council, recently retired lawyer Antonio Tastet was the most requested. These invoices are currently being analysed by Almuñecar Council’s legal services in order to find a way to pay them, which would cause the least possible impact to the town’s population.

Keira needs help By Dilip Kuner THE mother of a girl with cerebral palsy faces a race against time to raise funds for urgent therapy after a disappointing turnout at a fundraising event. Five-year-old Keira, who lives in Finestrat, has been making great progress in a bid to lead as normal a life as possible since starting therapy sessions, which are not available on the Spanish NHS. But she needs €2,500 to help pay for the next tranche of intensive therapy due to start on November 4. Her mother, British-born Debbie, said of Keira: “She has come a long way. People cannot believe how much better she is. That is the thing about the therapy, it really does work. It is not as if we just want to try something in case it might work, it really is making a difference.” Keira had an operation on her legs on May 14, and Debbie had planned the therapy sessions for November as it will be six months into her recovery and the optimum time for the ongoing treatment. She had been pinning her hopes on a fundraising event organised by Finestrat Council, with funds to be shared with Emaus. Contact the family on esplangish@hotmail.com

BUY BACK: Starbucks Europe.

SPAIN’s Vips fast-food chain has sold 49 per cent of its Starbucks Coffee España holding. Selling back part of the stake to Starbucks Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) “reinforces financial stability and accelerates transformation plans,” claimed Vips CEO Enrique Francia. The transaction will not influence Starbucks’ dayto-day operations in Spain, as Vips retains a 51 per cent holding in the firm. Neither will it affect Starbucks Portugal, which remains in the hands of the Spanish group. The Vips-Starbucks association commenced in 2001 and there are now 82 coffee shops in Spain.

FOREIGN EXCHANGE A FLURRY of positive economic data from the UK has augured well for the British Pound, making it the best performer in August amongst the major currencies. Confidence is on a high in Britain as the economic recovery gathers pace. Ever since Bank of England Governor Mark Carney unveiled his ‘forward guidance’ policy, tying up any movement in interest rates to stable figures emanating from the 7 per cent targeted employment rate which they expect to materialise by late 2016, markets have responded positively to better manufacturing and construction reports. With consumer confidence also on a high, it comes as no surprise that Sterling has rallied against the Euro breaching the 1.18 level early this month coupled with the best ever manufacturing figure release for 16 months at 57.2. The road ahead looks pretty steady for the Pound with business activity and factory orders also on the uptick. Although Sterling has had a

bullish run against the US Dollar and the Euro, movements were not as drastic as one would have expected. There is a key element to this; given the fact that developments in Syria have taken a turn for the worse, most investors tend to flock towards more stable ‘safe haven’ currencies, and that is exactly what has happened with the Dollar and the Euro. With capital inflows pouring in, it is likely that this is rendered purely a function of near-term economic upswing for the European continent. This would

BULLISH RUN: Sterling has rallied against the Euro. indicate that the Euro will continue to retain some of its recent-found strength in the short term. Psychologically, any talks for the implementation of ‘tapering’ of asset purchases (the quantitative easing programme) by the Federal Reserve should move the relatively calm markets now, indicating that the Euro may be running out of luck as it has failed to rally significantly even

when supported occasionally by better than expected economic data. The world will watch in anticipation as Germany goes to the polls to elect a new government on September 22. The events from this election will define how the ongoing three-year crisis in Europe would shape up, although currently stable with reports of the Eurozone emerging from

recession, it could flare up rapidly. Europe has already eased debt burdens on bailed-out countries in the Eurozone, namely Italy, Portugal and Greece, and any further requests for bailouts and reports of non-compliance, would see a harsh stance taken by Germany’s new government and the European Central Bank. Until then expect the Euro to continue to remain slightly weak against the Pound with major movements only showing up after the election. With growth forecasts hiked for the UK on the emergence of an economic recovery and Europe continuing in hushed silence till the German elections, we could see GBP/EUR breach the 1.19 level briefly but the pair will get most of its decisive exaggerated move post the elections depending on the measures that the Troika will take to try and sort out the Eurozone’s predicament.

Price-fix probe into major car builders CAR manufacturers in Spain are being targeted in a price-fixing investigation. Spain’s National Competition Commission (CNC) has launched a probe that will cover most major car makers in Spain. That includes Nissan, Renault, Toyota, Chrysler, General Motors, Fiat Group, Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Honda, Kia Motors, Peugeot and Citroën, as well as Volkswagen Audi España, Seat, Urban Science and Snap-On Solutions. At the same time another investigation will run into the distributors of Audi, Seat, Nissan, Toyota, Land Rover, Hyundai and Opel brands in Spain. The probes have been

The investigations will look into whether the various firms colluded and exchanged information on prices and marketing. “The investigation of cartels is one of the CNC’s priorities,” the anti-trust authority said. If found guilty of any malpractice, the

companies could face fines of up to 10 per cent of their annual revenue, Spanish daily El Pais reported. It quoted a Renault spokesman as saying the company did not infringe any laws. It is not known what evidence, if any, against the manufacturers and distributors has been found to justify an investigation.

Blazing lights are a costly extravagance IN crisis-ridden Spain, my wife and I have been nightly witnesses to an extravagant and easily avoidable waste of electricity. It is caused by the stubborn insistence of Benidorm City Hall allowing the, admittedly impressive, spectacle of the dusk-to-dawn illumination of Levante Beach’s famous Boardwalk streetlamps. We get a bird’s-eye-view of the needless excessive cost of maintaining the hundreds, or probably thousands, of lightbulbs which illuminate this ‘Great White Way’ from dusk until sometimes 7am. The cost of maintaining this illumination until early morning could be put to better use repairing the desperate state of Benidorm’s numerous dilapidated and hazardous sidewalks. My wife and I have often stumbled over and witnessed injuries to other hapless pedestrians manoeuvring through this neglected ‘obstacle course’. Having said that, Benidorm is a wonderful place for a happy retirement with its variety of good food at bargain-rate prices. The shows and entertainment are unsurpassed in the rest of Spain, as my Valencian wife and I will readily attest to. Our criticism is intended to improve Benidorm. Richard M McBride, Benidorm (Alicante)

No comparison I THOUGHT I had seen it all until I saw the news about some Gibraltarians (Costa del Sol Issue 1469) demanding the George Cross and comparing themselves to Malta. Have they read about the siege of Malta? Do they know how people suffered? My wife was born in Malta in 1940. Her father was wounded as an AA gunner. People starved. It was more than an inconvenient traffic jam. Enjoy your tax haven but never compare yourselves to a gallant country like Malta! Clive Graham (By email) Editor’s note: The George Cross is the UK’s highest award for gallantry awarded to civilians. It was awarded to the island of Malta by King George VI

Will someone who has won the lottery and doesn’t know what to do with the money start by rescuing these poor elephants from the circus in La Cala de Mijas (Malaga). They should be sent to a wildlife park where they can live out their lives happily.

on April 15, 1942, to ‘bear witness to the heroism and devotion of its people,’ during the Second World War.

Where’s the harm? CAN someone please explain to me why the police are so set on stopping ‘looky-looky’ sales of handbags, etc? I know, and you know, these bags are just look-a-likes, and to be honest I do not care! I either like them or I don’t, and for €20 I am happy. I would never buy the real designer handbags for hundreds of euros, so leave me to buy a bag to match every outfit, and keep the looky-lookyman with a small income. It is better than mugging for a living! Mary Hopkins, Torremolinos (Malaga)

Bad news THE paradise island of Mallorca is getting some very bad press regarding the sex trade on the island. It would seem from one letter (Issue 1469) that despite numerous complaints by the legitimate traders and owners of bars on the island, who have a genuine concern for the safety and welfare of their customers, there has been little or no action on the part of the authorities. In another letter, a British holidaymaker was attacked by a taxi driver over a matter of €5 and was hospitalised with no action being taken against the driver. As pointed out in both pieces, this could damage Mallorca’s holiday industry. Bad news always travels fast. John Lawrence, Hondon de las Nieves (Alicante)

Time for a rest! REST at last! My three children are back at school this week. Even they are relieved to return. Nearly three months of holidays is hard work for parents, and boring for the children. I know the excuse for such long holidays is it is too hot for school work, but have the authorities never heard of air-conditioning? Mrs Angela Tedds, Estepona (Malaga)

Help needed MANY expats have left Spain in the last few years. The reason for some is they reached a time when they knew they were going to have to leave their home and find a new place to live that would give them the care they might need in the future. A group of community spirited people in Almuñecar (Granada) are working hard to address this need by looking at the possibility of reopening the Residencia Costa Tropical home for the retired. As part of that work they are doing some research to see if there are others who feel the same way they do and want to create a space where people can be independent but never alone. They have put a questionnaire online at www.residenciacosta tropical.com and would be grateful if readers could take a few minutes to answer some simple questions. Helping them out with this does not commit anyone to joining them, but it will show if there is a feeling of support for this community based project. Mel O’Gorman (By email)

Swiss solution I HAVE read via your excellent paper many articles on the working street girls (I do not like the term prostitutes). Now Zurich has found the answer. The Swiss have set up ‘garages’ where clients can retire with the street girls. There will be medical advice and sanitary facilities on hand, and it takes them off the streets. A panic button will be provided in case of trouble. It would be a great idea if we can get this idea over to our town halls. BG (By email)

Double love I DID not move to Spain in search of love, Euro Weekly News (Expat love hunt, page 3, Issue 1470), but I found it! Thirty years ago I fell in love with the country first, and my beautiful wife Francesca soon after. In both cases the love affair has continued to the present day. Thank you Spain for giving me a happy life! Stan Hardmann, Palma (Mallorca).

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT GREAT EVENT: The Proms. faces, all baring their emotions without a damn Burka in sight. The Burka is a travesty. This awful facial shroud actually sums up the oppressive way of life our enemies would have us adopt, if we allowed it, which we never will. The French have already banned this unacceptable mask of misery and I was delighted to see Conservative MP Philip Hollobone

THE other week I wrote about some silly stories proliferating at this time of year. These have to be topped, though, by the one about the fictitious floating restaurant, Oscar’s, built in the hull of an old fishing boat amid reefs and shipwrecks in Brixham, Devon, where staff in diving gear would swim down to catch whatever fish the customer wanted. In the three months it was up, Oscar’s managed to climb to a top ranking on TripAdvisor. And it didn’t even exist! This TripAdvisor profile was in fact a ruse started by a disgruntled businessman. He was fed up with malicious and unmoderated reviews being posted on the website that claims to provide “unbiased hotel reviews, photos and advice for hotels and vacations.” This follows an earlier TripAdvisor profile about a Glasgow hostel for the homeless named as one of the city’s best hotels after fake reviews. Some users even posted photos of pool and spa facilities that the hotel supposedly offers, but which don’t actually exist. Now, even the best genuine restaurants and hotels in the world will always find some detractors, so you have to use a bit of common sense and look at a range of reviews. Used intelligently, TripAdvisor is a very useful tool, but useless if taken at

OTHERS THINK IT come out this week and state that if one of these women required a ‘face to face’ consultation, they would not be welcome unless their faces could actually be observed. Let us be absolutely clear here. The Burka has nothing whatsoever to do with religion. At no point does the Koran mention the female form has to be covered from top to toe,

merely that they should be attired modestly. (Call me old fashioned, but observing the way some of our ladies expose themselves these days the Koran may have a point!) No, having lived in a Muslim country for almost eight years, I can tell you, the only reason their women are covered in this way is that some of the men are so randy and emotionally insecure; they simply can’t trust other males to keep their hands off them. It really is as simple as that. As far as the women themselves are concerned, some comply because they are simply petrified of their chosen partners, others retain a masochistic or subservient attitude, and only a few truly enjoy the anonymity and intimidating effect this threatening emotion eraser has on those around them. This week’s message? Ban the Burka and God bless the Proms. Keep the Faith. Love Leapy. Leapylee2002@gmail.com.

Right again CONGRATULATIONS on yet another article in the EWN that I, and I am sure 99 per cent of the population, agree with. My friends and acquaintances all agree with Leapy about keeping out of the Syrian conflict. Thank you once again for expressing our thoughts so clearly. Keep it up! Cynthia Blantern, (Malaga)

A tragedy

LETTERS TO LEAPY

TO me one of the most wonderfully British events of the year is The Proms. The series of classical music concerts held at London’s Royal Albert Hall, sum up everything that is gloriously British. As I looked out at the thousands who took part in this year’s final, heart bursting night, my thoughts turned to the subsequent despair and envy that must be felt by the enemies in our midst. Misguided zealots, who actually think they can replace the British heritage and way of life with their own austere undemocratic slavery. As I looked out across this wonderful gathering, with the flags of the Commonwealth and our nation waving proudly in the breeze and the uplifting tones of ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ ringing stridently out from 10,000 throats, I was struck by two thoughts. One was why our Scottish partners would ever want to leave our age old alliance! And secondly the sight of thousands of joyful

REGARDING Syria. It is a tragedy what is happening there. I have to say I disagree with a lot of what Leapy says, but this time he has it right. Democracy has finally been heard with the UK parliament voting against military action. Clara Anderson, Torrevieja, (Alicante).

REVIEWS: Use TripAdvisor intelligently and be wary of first-time contributors giving excessively high or low ratings. face value. Why can’t it see, for instance, that a venue with numerous five-star reviews posted by first-time reviewers is quite likely cheating the system? Not funny really because people make spending decisions based on what they read on the site. As I’ve written before, you have to use your own ‘idiot filters’. If there are only five-star reviews, be suspicious; similarly, if only bad ones.

In fact, I’m astonished how people write damning reviews for the slightest reason. One reviewer gave a hotel a one-star rating because, even though he wasn’t staying there and only purchased a beer, he didn’t like the barman’s ‘surly attitude’. Another reviewer gave a restaurant a one-star slating despite not eating there because the decor ‘looked tired’. One common gripe I do take seriously, though, is being ‘accidentally’ overcharged in restaurants for fictitious drinks, etc, by a minority (thankfully) of restaurateurs. Hmm, back to the land of make-believe I wrote about above! If there’s only one thing you take away from today’s column, it’s this: CHECK those bills!

Back to work blues MORE than half of Spaniards suffer from depression after their holiday. According to estimates by Spain’s Department of Health Promotion, 65 per cent of the nation suffer and struggle with the back to work routine. In a report it says that workers enjoy “being out of their environment, go to bed later, eat at different times and alter virtually all their habits.” The report adds: “The greater the time they are away from home and work, the harder it is to return to a routine. “People need an average of four to five days to recover, adapt to the new scenario and to overcome a negative attitude.”

The alum stone is a natural alternative to daily deodorant MORE people are turning to alternative natural deodorants every day. One of the most famous options is the alum stone, also known as crystal deodorant. Discovered in Roman times, the alum stone does not contain any toxic chemical substances.

It is a natural mineral sulphate that can be used as deodorant and it is especially recommended for people who have sensitive skin. The alum stone does not cover up odours, but rather prevents them by leaving a thin mineral layer on the skin.

It can also be used after waxing or shaving due to its soothing properties. A definite advantage of the alum stone is its durability, which makes it a good value beauty product. This stone comes from a magmatic rock of volcanic

Summer indulgence causes weight gain of three kilos THE average Spaniard puts on around three kilos of weight during the summer. That’s according to estimates from Doctor Alber Lecube, Coordinator for the Spanish Society of Endocrinology and Nutrition. He said the main reason for this is “the abandonment of habits one acquires during the year.” He added: “On holiday you forget and eat and drink more.”

The solution, says Lecube, is that “when summer ends, excesses must be finished and as you return to your work routine better eating habits must also return.” He says there is no quick fix to losing weight which requires effort: “It’s okay to have an unbalanced diet for a couple of days to reduce weight fast, but you need healthy habits, eating less and limiting fat intake.”

ALUM STONE: Natural option. origin. However, due to the costs of extraction and the rarity of the mineral, it is becoming harder to find. Synthetic alum stones with the same properties are easy to find in supermarkets as well as in natural product shops.

Daydreaming insomniacs DAYDREAMERS are more likely to be insomniacs. A new study has revealed that regions of the brain associated with wandering thoughts do not shut down when the brain is given complex tasks, meaning those who can concentrate more are usually better sleepers than those who daydream.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) There is still a strong accent on family matters and getting things sorted out. The way ahead is clear. If you are able to persuade someone that an idea was theirs and not yours, so much the better. Being in a practical mood serves you well because it is possible to get a lot done in the next few days.

(January 21 - February 19) A meeting midweek could mean a change to your finances for the better. In the short term, it may be necessary for you to rearrange money and appointments but try not to be too put out. Change is something that we become less tolerant of after a situation has gone on for a time.

CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Your mind is still sharp this week and there are many questions that you would like answered. Doing a bit of research proves fruitful and also quite amusing. A recent contact may not come up with the proposition hoped for, but realise that it is still early days. AQUARIUS

PISCES (February 20 - March 20) There is so much that has come to light in the past few weeks, it is no wonder that your mind is reeling. All will become clear in the weeks ahead and this cannot be rushed. However, there is a need to look after your health and get out in the fresh air.

ARIES (March 21 - April 20) A pleasant surprise makes you a little more optimistic midweek. It is possible for you to take on negativity too quickly. The next time something does not go according to plan, hold fire TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) Although last week was not run at the pace anticipated, now the pace certainly picks up. Finances are still firmly on the agenda, but this time you will be able to deal on a more relaxed basis. GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) Make a point of putting on a happy face and your mood will stay high. There is still some more to be done to improve your social life and a recent offer of charity work may be just the thing. Avoid restricting who you are willing to mix with.

SU DOKU

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Being considerably more relaxed about those things which cannot be changed has taken a weight from your shoulders. It is also easier to understand why others have taken this approach in the past.

HOW TO PLAY Fill the grid so that every row, every column and every 3X3 box contains the digits 1-9. There’s no maths involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

LEO (July 24 - August 23) Are you still patting yourself on the back for that recent achievement? Socially, this is a lovely week when old friendships are strengthened and new acquaintances prove to be relaxing. It is another mellow week but one in which you seriously consider making a major change.

DISHWASHER: Can be used to poach food.

A revolutionary idea of cooking by dishwasher A DISHWASHER is an insulated box with an engine capable of producing heat. Following this basic idea, Italian food writer, Lisa Casali has come up with a revolutionary way of cooking: dishwasher cooking. Dishwasher cooking is not far different from cooking in the oven,

only that it requires the food to be covered. It is safe as long as the food is put in jars or food vacuum bags. The process is also environmentally friendly as dishes will clean while poaching food. Moreover, it saves money as the same electricity and water used to wash the dishes is used to cook.

Ramsay and Beckham open new restaurant IT hasn’t even opened yet and already thousands have made reservations for Gordon Ramsay and David Beckham’s new restaurant due to open later this month in London (UK). Within half an hour of their website going live, Union Street Café had tables booked by 1,200 diners, four hours later and that number had doubled. Already there are limited spaces for Friday and Saturday nights throughout October and November. The new eatery is in Borough, just south of the Thames, and has been designed by Russell Sage who also created the

interior of Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen. The style is described as an ‘urban warehouse destination’ which will offer Mediterranean-influenced food, cooked in an open kitchen so diners can watch the chefs in action.

DINERS in Britain are looking for better quality options when eating fast food. According to a study carried out by market analysts Mintel, four out of 10 restaurant goers in Britain crave more than just a burger and fries. The search for quality products and real flavours is a trend, with 13 per cent of consumers saying they have tried innovative gourmet products in fast food, and 61 per cent saying they are willing to try them in the future. Quality and innovation are essential in such a competitive marketplace. Restaurants offer new healthy alternatives to appeal to consumers and increase their profits. Courgette fries are a good example. This

note, the research carried out by Mintel points out that 47 per cent of restaurant goers in Britain look for dishes they cannot

Use your gardening books to help improve your Spanish MANY expatriates come to Spain to enjoy the climate, food, culture and generally relaxed way of life. Many also have a determination, at first at least, to learn some Spanish to be able to shop, find their way around Spanish menus, buy things in the local store, speak to the Spanish gardener and be friendly with Spanish neighbours. Some make speedy progress by concentrating from day one on being able to speak. They listen to a little Spanish TV, if only the news or a football match to start with, read the headlines and gradually read the contents of Spanish newspapers.

MAKE LISTS: Use your gardening books to compile your weekly shop.

Gardening Corner By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.

They also make shopping lists for the garden centre, agricultural cooperatives and agricultural/garden machine shops and write out a few basic questions as openers to find things if they are not obviously on display. Others soon give up because of the way Spanish is taught, with months of concentration on grammar, the reading for a few minutes of a novel by a Literary Nobel Prize winner such as

LEARN PLANT NAMES: This will help you to open up a discussion with your Spanish gardener or when in a garden centre. Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and the studying of the 13 cases of the subjunctive. You could write a text along the lines of Shakespeare before you really get around to

trying to talk in public. This can be a soul destroying process, as I initially experienced with a well known Spanish language school. It can be made worse in some popular expatriate areas

in that the first time you try out your embryo Spanish, the Spaniard you are addressing says, “Don’t make things difficult for yourself, speak to me in English. I know some and I need the practice to get better.” Since our readers garden, or have a gardener who they would like to design and maintain a garden their way, all our original four major gardening books have useful vocabularies at the back and plant lists/descriptions with botanical, English and Spanish names. The vocabularies are grouped under useful headings such as measurements, commonly useful words, materials, tools, parts of plants, types of plants, gardening verbs, and gardening adjectives. Take these gardening books out of the book case and: • Read through them regularly checking each week how many of the words you can remember. • Prepare garden

related shopping lists that you could speak about or show Spanish garden centre and shop assistants. • Offer to give your gardener some English coaching in return for him helping you with your Spanish - start this by wandering around the garden together describing each feature plant and problem in both languages. • If you have a Spanish teacher lend her your gardening book/s and ask her to concentrate on using gardening words, phrases and sentences during your lesson and to set you relevant homework. I remember writing out my gardening activities for the past week as the basis for a discussion and for my coach to correct my writings. • Use the vegetable and fruit names from the above vegetable and fruit books when preparing food shopping lists. Best of luck in making progress during the autumn and enjoying Spain even more than you do, or disliking it less. © Dick Handscombe www.gardenspain. com gardenspain2@yahoo. com September 2013.

€100m shock of football transfer SPAIN is currently experiencing severe government cutbacks along with thousands of evictions and high levels of unemployment, whilst Real Madrid spends THE opinions amongst people the EWN talked to on the street are quite unambiguous. Gareth Bale is not worth that amount of money and there are far better areas where the money could be spent. • “I think it is disgusting that they can afford to pay that kind of money, especially with the situation most expats are experiencing, with illegal homes and unemployment because of the bad state of the construction industry, said George Morris, a retired lorry driver from Cantoria (Almeria). He added: “There seems to be more poverty now in Spain with normal people helping each other out by collecting food for food banks.” • Keith Fowler, 69, retired from Baza (Granada) said: “The Spanish are passionate

€100 million to buy footballer Gareth Bale. That sort of money could buy 12.5 million menus del dia (at €8) or pay for 3,700 nurses for a year

THOMAS - It’s EU money. about football and after all Real Madrid is a business, but no player is worth that kind of money. Ordinary Spanish people are probably not too happy about it.” • Connor Cary, aged 22 from Monaghan, Ireland, agreed: “He’s overrated and I think it is stupid money, but it is hard to put a price on it.” He has a different theory as to why the sport could involve such high sums of money:

CONNOR - Bale is overrated and not worth that amount of money.

STREET TALK “It’s publicity, it gets people’s interest.” • Sandra Whiley, aged 65, also agrees. As a former nurse now retired on the

SIMONE - Spend on youth. Orihuela Costa, (Alicante) she was shocked at figures that his transfer was the equivalent of paying 3,700 nurses for a year: “Nothing can be right about that, I know movie stars and pop stars are paid a lot also, but at the end of the day I think the football world is crazy with the amount paid to players for a few games and training each week. A lot of them are not exactly good

role models.” • The money would be best spent anywhere other than football is another opinion. “It’s European Union Money they’ve spent, so I think spending it on anything else would be better than spending it on football,” says Thomas Tukya, 36, from Sweden on holiday on the Costa del Sol. • Simone Harding, 38 who lives in Riviera on the Costa del Sol has a clear idea where the money could be spent. She said: “I think the money would be better spent amongst the youth and the community and setting up more support for young people and families.”

People interviewed with regard to mobile phones will feature in next week’s edition.

Don’t fall foul of foreign customs WHEREVER you’re travelling, the chances are they do things differently there. That’s why it’s essential to research the dos and don’ts of your destination, along with taking out proper travel insurance and getting any necessary health jabs. Break the law when you’re abroad, and you could end up facing whopping fines or even arrest... things that no travel insurance policy is designed to cover you for. Yet that is exactly the situation that many travellers continue to face every year, says a recent report by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The report has highlighted a sharp rise in the number of Brits getting into trouble in Italy, the United Arab Emirates and the Netherlands. More than a quarter of all cases requiring consular help involved arrests or detentions. Many of these could have been avoided by reading the relevant country advice on the FCO website www.gov.uk/foreigntravel-advice. In Singapore, some anti-social offences may sound like the answers in a game of Trivial Pursuit - but there’s nothing trivial about the fines they attract. The list includes chewing gum in the subway, immoderate displays of affection in public and failing to flush a public convenience after use (and yes, we’re told there really are spot-checks!). Only this summer, some unwary British and Irish expatriates in Portugal showed how easy it is to be caught out by laws

BE PREPARED: Local knowledge a must. that differ from ‘back home.’ They were given heavy fines in court for playing bingo, so breaking the country’s tough anti-gambling laws. Meanwhile, in several Italian cities, mayors are clamping down on unsightly snacking around historic monuments, so don’t be tempted to unwrap your panini on the church steps or you could end up out of pocket. As for the Netherlands, the traveller

trouble is easily explained. Amsterdam is known for being tolerant on soft drugs, but some take that as meaning ‘anything goes.’ It doesn’t. If found in possession of drugs outside the designated places, you could end up in jail. The UAE deserves a mention too. Of the million or so Britons that go there annually, only a handful get into difficulty, but the consequences may be very distressing. For all Dubai’s glitz, its values are Muslim. Women are expected to cover up far more than they would at home, while kissing, swearing or gesticulating aggressively can lead to arrest... a sorry end to a five star holiday. WILLIAMS: Equalled Federer’s record.

Five in a row for Vettel, Rafa and Serena win in the USA Tony Matthews

International Sport A former football player and the world’s most prolific author of football books (more than 100 published), Tony is also the sports reporter for Spectrum Radio and lives in the Cabrera mountains. Costa de Almería

13 of the MotoGP season takes place in San Marino on Sunday when once again the Spanish trio of Marquez, Pedrosa and Lorenzo hope to finish 1-2-3. And in cricket, the fourth ODI between England and Australia takes place at Cardiff on Saturday. The first was abandoned without a ball being

bowled; the Aussies won the second by 88 runs (courtesy of a majestic century by captain Michael Clarke) and the third took place yesterday at Edgbaston. FORMULA 1 Sebastian Vettel won the Italian Grand Prix - his sixth victory of the year - to extend his lead in the driver’s championship to 53 points with 175 still available from the last seven races. Fernando Alonso and Vettel’s Red Bull teammate Mark Webber came second and third in Monza. TENNIS - Serena Williams equalled Roger Federer’s record of 17 Grand Slam titles by beating Victoria Azarenka in the women’s final of the US Open. Steffi Graf

DID YOU KNOW? FOR the record, the world’s most expensive footballer, Gareth Bale, will earn £21.6m over the next six years. That’s £3.6m per annum £300,000 a month - approximately £10,000 a day - £417.60 an hour - £6.90 a minute - 116p a second. More than £600m (€710.2m) was spent before the football transfer window closed last week. The 20 Premiership clubs alone were involved in 404 deals from the end of last season to September 1. holds the women’s Grand Slam record with 22 wins. In the men’s singles showdown at Flushing Meadows, Rafael Nadal beat Novak Djokovic for his 13th Grand Slam. FOOTBALL - Last weekend England moved to the top of Group H of the World Cup qualifiers with a 4-0 victory over Moldova. But there were defeats for Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland. Spain also won, 2-0 in Finland. Checking the other qualifying tables, Belgium and Croatia look strong in Group A, Italy in B, Germany and Sweden in C, Holland in D, Switzerland in E, Portugal and Russia in F, Bosnia and Herzovina in G and Spain and Greece in I. On Tuesday, England played a vital group game in Ukraine. RUGBY UNION - The 2013-14 AXA Championship started last weekend and there were opening wins for Sale (22-16 at Gloucester), Northampton (38-11 v Exeter), Harlequins (16-11 over Wasps), Saracens 42-20 v London Irish and reigning champions Leicester (3215 v Worcester). In the internationals, New Zealand beat Argentina 28-13 and South Africa flattened Australia (again) 38-12.

SPORT SHORTS It was disappointment all round for Spain as Madrid missed out on staging the 2020 Olympic Games. Tokyo has been chosen as the host city and spectators there will be able to watch wrestling, which has now been reinstated as an Olympic sport. Dane Thomas Bjorn won his first golf title in two years by beating Scotsman Craig Lee in a play-off to clinch the European Masters in Switzerland. And the USA beat GB and Ireland’s women 17-9 in Long Island to regain the Walker Cup. It was America’s 35th victory since the top amateur event started in 1922. GB/Ireland have recorded just eight wins with one tie. Surrey and Somerset are ‘favourites’ for relegation from the First Division of the County Championship which looks set to go to Durham. And Glamorgan will play either Notts or Somerset in the YB40 over final at Lords. It will be the Welsh county’s first final for 13 years. I have heard that the FA turned down the chance to interview current Bayern Munich boss, Pep Guardiola for the England manager’s job before going on to choose Roy Hodgson.

IN the Premiership on Saturday, Manchester United take on Crystal Palace, neighbours City visit Stoke, Arsenal travel to Sunderland, Aston Villa play Newcastle, Everton welcome Chelsea, Fulham entertain WBA, Hull meet Cardiff and Norwich visit Spurs. Twenty-four hours later it’s Southampton v West Ham. On Monday evening, Liverpool will be hoping to retain top spot when they go to Swansea. Also this weekend, there are full programmes in the Championship, Leagues One and Two and in Scotland, while the top La Liga games feature Atletico Madrid-Almeria, Barcelona-Sevilla, Malaga-Ray Vallecano and Villarreal-Real Madrid. Summer fun at an end for GINS JUST for fun here are the aggregate scores for the GINS summer season. The real competition begins in October and ends in March. 1st Man Brian Lynch 2nd Man John Vertanness 3rd Man Peter Garner 1st Lady Anne Jones

38pts 33pts 26pts 46pts

2nd Lady Lyn McAllister 41pts 3rd Ladies Lola Montero, Beverly Jackson, Eloisa Sanchez all on 16pts

ALL SMILES: GINS winners.

Out of the 36 members that played, 26 of them won prizes of one sort or another. Thirteen different members scooped the two pots, but King of the Twos was John Vertanness with three of them A special mention has to go to this summer’s nearly but not quite; the Most Losses on Countback King title goes to Frank Ferdinales. Joining GINS at Añoreta were Jim Paton and Alan Broad for their first September competition. Organisers say it is always a pleasure to welcome guests and visitors to Anoreta, and this summer they welcomed 14, four guests of members and 10 visitors from other courses, some on a regular basis. Fifteen entered the

Stableford and nine played in the Medal competition. The course continues to play fairly tough, with many players having a good front nine but failing to capitalise on that on the back nine. Organisers sent thanks to Peter and Beverly Jackson for doing the desk and Bernardo for doing the cards. In the medal competition, first was John Vertanness (nett 73) with Brian Lynch (nett 75) second. In the Stableford, Marilyn Adams (32) was top with Judy Howard (26) second and Lola Montero (24) third. At Baviera it was much cooler than in recent weeks. Players tried a new format where everyone started with a negative score, depending on their handicap, and had to try to achieve a positive result by scoring points. One for a bogey, two for a par, four for a birdie and eight for an eagle. Some people liked the format, a few hated it and the rest were not too sure so the jury is out as to whether to repeat the competition or not.
