One man on ‘peace’ march to Gibraltar A NERJA resident has decided to step in to calm things down at the Gibraltar border. Justo Marquez will set out to walk the 193 kilometres to Gibraltar today (Thursday) carrying a wooden cross all the way. Once there he intends to call for the end of the current conflict
between the Spanish and Gibraltarian governments. Marquez, aged 50 and currently unemployed, intends to pray for 24 hours in front of the fence separating Gibraltar from Spain once he reaches his destination. The wooden cross he will be carrying is three metres long and
two metres wide with a weight of approximately 10 kilos. Marquez, who walked from Granada to Madrid on a protest march in 2009, will set forth on his journey alone, although he is confident more people will join him on his way to Gibraltar.
Farmers on mango theft alert FARMERS are calling for action to stop thieves stealing their crops. With the harvest of sub-tropical fruits like mangos already badly hit by severe winter and spring storms, they fear losing what is left of their crops to thieves. That is why the Young Farmers Association (ASAJA) has made an official request to the central government subdelegation in Malaga to protect the local farms. ASAJA has urged the authorities to set up a surveillance system around farms and distribution points, as
IN DANGER: Thieves are targeting the Axarquia well as transportation networks. The summer marks the beginning of the key season for sub-tropical producers in the
Axarquia area. As every year, the harvest season of the mango starts in the last week of August to go on until November.
That means it is a prime time for thieves to strike. Already this summer farmers have lost unripe fruit stolen for illegal sale to tourists, and that raised the alarm among the producers. According to ASAJA president Miguel Gutierrez, thieves are more active during the harvest season as they can cover up their actions easier due to the coming and going of people in the farms. Gutierrez has encouraged farmers to report any theft, however minor it would be.
